And let’s not forget school starts during August. But as August comes to an end and the start of the football season is knocking at the door, that yearning for football is about to be satisfied.

Football on mind of NWOSU’s Hall

Following an offseason in which Northwestern Oklahoma State University football coach Alan Hall was diagnosed and subsequently cleared of lymphoma cancer, its back to work for the 2013 season. His cancer has been in remission since early summer. “Sometimes its hard for me to remember I even had to go through it,” Hall said of his treatments. I’m so busy now. I felt like when I was going through chemo that I had banker’s hours, coming in at 9 a.m. and leaving at 5 p.m. I’m still getting my strength back.” The Rangers are coming off a 4-7 season and take a four-game win streak into the 2013 season. “It was a rough opening stretch,” Hall said. “The early schedule didn’t help us much. The second game of the season we played one of the top five teams in the country in CSU-Pueblo that at one point in the season was ranked No. 1. Two weeks later we go down to San Antonio to play in the Alamodome against a Western Athletic Conference school in UTSA, which was far more superior than we were given the nature of our makeup right now.” NWOSU is coming off its first year in Division II and first season in the Great American Conference. The team has another two years before they qualify for the playoffs. Thus the commitment to the youth movement, which includes 38 freshmen and 21 sophomores. The good news for the Rangers is they can compete for a conference championship in 2013. “We’ve taken the youthful approach along with a senior class we had coming back,” Hall said. “We’ve tried to develop young talent as we’re building a Division II program here.”

OFFENSE

With only four starters returning, Hall will rely heavily on quarterback Reid Miller, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound red-shirt freshman who has some big shoes to fill in replacing Kyle Jech, who threw for 2,646 yards with a touchdown-interception ratio of 17-4. “We will utilize a number of personnel groups,” Hall said. “We’ll go four wide receivers, three wide receivers and tight end. But we will base out of the shotgun. That allows us to utilize our skill personnel. “Losing Kyle, we lose a large part of our offense,” Hall said. “Reid right now is the projected starter. Reid traveled with us last year, learning from Kyle all the way. He learned things you have to do day-to-day, not just in season. We really like Reid’s maturity and growth from the day he arrived here. He’s a great athlete. All his family played here, most played basketball. His dad is actually in the Hall of Fame here. Reid’s the first to play football.” Hall understands what comes with a young quarterback.

“I’m sure there will be youthful indiscretions on the field,” Hall said. “That’s part of the growth process.” At running back, Javari Liggins (5-10, 210, Sr.), a back-up a year ago, strutted his stuff in the final game, rushing for 200 yards. In the same game, freshman Zach Doyle rushed for over 100 yards. “Javari is a very physical, powerful runner,” Hall said. “He’s tough to bring down. The first guy usually doesn’t bring him down. He’s a member of the leadership council. We expect big things out of him.” Malcolm Robinson, a track star in high school in Arkansas, is in the backfield stable. The Rangers averaged just 3.3 yards per carry behind a youth-ridden offensive line that included four true freshmen. James Pitts (6-2, 270, So.), who started at tackle in 2012, will likely move to either guard or center. Stefan Simpson (6-3, 280, So.) played guard last year. Others to watch include Zack Pritchard (6-6, 285, Jr.) out of Collinsville, Jose Garcia (6-5, 320, Jr.) and Kenny Stewart (6-5, 300). And finally, Hall mentioned Calen Gable (6-5, 245). “James very athletic, quick,” Hall said. “Stefan started to come into his own in spring. Calen is tall and athletic.

He qualified to run the 200 meters in high school.” The receiving corps has undergone a makeover. The Rangers redshirted three players, whom Hall joked were probably more talented than what Derrick Thompson was on the field. Jerami Anderson (5-8, 175, Sr.) played the slot receiver last year. Mervyn Stewart, Davonte Bryant and Montrel Logan are all transfers. Jarion Tudman, a redshirt from Edmond North, also shows promise. Those players plus true freshmen Jesse Webb (Frederick), Reggie Harris (Little Rock Central) plus Travion Willis, who redshirted in 2013. “We’re talented,” Hall said. “We’re unproven but we are excited to see what these kids bring to the table. Our success last year really started to happen when our tight ends started to play well. Cameron Allen (6-4, 240, Sr.) made some big catches for us down the stretch. We kind of forced him into the role and he just swallowed it up.”

Defense

The Rangers will operate in the 4-2-5. First on the minds of Hall and his staff is shoring up a defense that allowed 6.4 yards per rush. “We have the most holes to fill on defense,” Hall said. Jeremy Guitierrez (6-3, 240, Sr.) wowed the staff at defensive end. Donovan Guidry (6-3, 260) will move from defensive end to tackle. Charles Snider (6-1, 260) is a returning starter but missed the spring due to shoulder surgery. At inside linebacker will be returning player Derrick Thompson (6-2, 215, RS-Fr.), who was second on the

team in tackles with 82. “He played quite a bit,” Hall said. Garden City Community College transfer Alex Hemburger (5-10, 205) is pushing for playing time as well. “Alex’ football IQ is off the charts,” Hall said. Others battling include Coach: Alan Hall LaRon Mitchell (6-0, 220), Nicholas Coffey 2nd SEASON (4-7) (6-0, 200), Lavonte Doxey (6-2, 225) and Offensive Coordinator: Kevin Turco Steven Majik (6-4, 235). Taylor Jones, a former 8-man star Defensive Coordinator: out of Forgan, was John Falvey the team’s scout team defensive player 2012 Record: last year. He is also 4-7 battling for one of the linebacker spots.

Outside linebacker candidates include Keenan Santa Cruz and Chris Ladd among others. Secondary is one of the more settled positions with David Crumitie (6-0, 185), who led the team in interceptions last year. Travion Kelly will move from corner to free safety. Jordan Norris is a candidate for cornerback, as is freshman Eric Davis.

What NWOK area teams have the best shot to make the state championship game in Stillwater? Woodward Boomers Led by VYPE Top 100 star Kyler Ferguson, the Boomers are ranked No.7 in the preseason poll and have a legitimate shot at going deep in the playoffs. With players like Micah Kee and Cale Hixon at skill positions and Cody Coats and Marc Gomez protecting the quarterback, the Boomer offense could put up some spectacular numbers this season. Defensively Ferguson, Gomez and Jason Alexander will look to shut down their opponents and win the field position battle. Head coach Darris Sevris and the staff are excited to get the season going and hopefully find that path that leads to Stillwater in December.

Kingfisher Yellowjackets No stranger to Stillwater, the Kingfisher Yellowjackets are hungry to get back to Boone Pickens Stadium and play for a state title. Learning to Cope with

Sports Anxiety

Have you ever thought of anxiety as being a good thing? Some athletes experience a phenomenon known as “sports anxiety” which they can use as a tool to drive their success in sports-related activities. Sports anxiety is Brian Wright a form of anxiety in which a -MCP, LPC, LADC Candidate person has emotions that can be overwhelming, pertaining to an upcoming sports event. Many athletes have trouble describing a reason for their anxiety but find that it is important for them to have multiple techniques to deal with the anxiety. Some of the ways to cope with sports anxiety include calm scene imagery, the use of breathing techniques and brain training games.

Calm scene imagery requires a person to have a predetermined “happy place” that they use to calm emotions including anxiety. Using the “happy” place helps to reduce the feelings of anxiety thus increasing performance.

Breathing techniques are a means to control the body and its reaction to stress and can be done at anytime. A simple form of breathing is to take five deep breaths; in through the mouth and out through the nose.

A big target with good hands, Riley Hess has long been on the recruiting list of several schools in Oklahoma. Hess is a smart player who leads on and off the field. Enid Area Team of the Month Enid is on the right track under Steve Chard. Good luck to the Plainsmen seniors. In head coach Steve Chard’s first year in Enid the Plainsmen finished 3-7. Now in his second year Chard is hoping to continue to improve in 2013.

“We have improved our strength substantially in the past offseason and feel like our second year together allows us more familiarity with our schemes which will lend to better execution,” Chard said. “We’ve got a chance to be better. We’re in a hard league. We have a lot of potential but that is what is now – potential.” Aaron Beagle and Alex Lofton both return at receiver this year and will be helping a new quarterback get settled in. Top candidates for the

Prognosticator: Someone who makes predictions on the future. It sounds difficult to me and I wonder why I am sticking my neck out and attempting to Jay Hoberecht predict football Williams Broadcasting in northwest Sports Director Oklahoma for KGWA and KOFM the 2013 season. Certainly my 20+ years of following sports in northwest Oklahoma makes me familiar with many of the teams. But we all know that things happen, kids mature, teams come together, injuries, breaks, big plays, and busts on defense during a key series and schedules all have an impact on the outcome of the 2013 high school football season. But, here goesâ&#x20AC;Ś my thoughts about some of the better teams in northwest Oklahoma.

Class 4A It all begins and ends with Class 4A defending state champion, the Clinton Red Tornadoes. They are picked to win District 4A-1 behind two VYPE Top 100 players, running back Marquis Simpkins and lineman Grant Lee. The Red Tornadoes have won 16 state championships and six since 2000. Look for Clinton to go deep in the playoffs looking for back-to back state championships.

The Woodward Boomers are picked third in District 4A-1 behind Clinton and Anadarko. The Boomers have VYPE Top 100 player in Kyler Ferguson who goes both ways. Add-in senior Micah Kee and other skill position players to make Woodward an interesting team to watch this season. Definitely a playoff team in tough 4A!

Mike Lee Clinton won the Class 3A State Championship in 2003 and have been a big factor in Class 3A every year since. They were runnerup three of the last four years including 2012. This year will be no different with VYPE Top 100 Landon Nault back for his senior season to lead the Yellowjackets to another deep run in the playoffs.

Class 2A District 2A-1 will be Class 3A The Kingfisher Yellowjackets interesting to follow throughout the season with the Alva Goldbugs, Hennessey Eagles, Perry Maroons and Chisholm Longhorns all teams to watch. The Alva Goldbugs under second year head coach Bruce Dollar look to put up some big offensive numbers with Class 6A The Enid Plainsmen are quarterback Ty Hooper (2,920 and 35 coming off a 3-7 year that could have touchdowns) and receiver Riley Hess been better except for a couple of tough back. Look for the defense to be better close losses. Second year head coach with Cade Pfleider (200 tackles) and Steve Chard likes what the Plainsmen Joby Allen. The Hennessey Eagles won have done in the off season improving back-to-back gold balls in 2010 and strength and conditioning. The progress continues behind fullback Bryce Stewart and a solid offensive line. Look for all four of these teams to make the playoffs in District 2A-1. Class A Okeene won back-to-back state championships in 2006 and 2007. Since then, five different teams took home the gold ball including the Ringling Blue Devils last year. It may be Ringling again this year.

District A-1 in northwest Oklahoma will be competitive with Fairview, Texhoma, Okeene, Mooreland and OBA in the hunt for a playoff berth. Fairview will have some solid players returning and may go deep in the playoffs. Texhoma’s Nathan Knitig will play both ways as quarterback and defensive back and can make things happen. Okeene has nine starters back from last year and Coach Wardlaw does a great job getting his players prepared each week. Mooreland had their first winning season since 2008 and look to battle for a playoff spot. OBA will be in the mix with Preston Atwood and Baylor Boyd on the field making plays. In District A-2 Thomas will go deep in the playoffs. In A-3, Cashion, Crescent and Watonga will make the playoffs. In A-7 Kiefer and Morrison will battle for the district title. Class B The Laverne Tigers were Class B champions last year. But, Wetumka, Alex, Fox and several other teams want the gold ball this season. District B-1 always produces playoff teams that go deep in the playoffs. Maybe B-1 is the toughest district year-

to –year in eight-man football. Laverne is picked to win B-1 and compete for another gold ball. Laverne averaged over 50 points per game and allowed just less than 10 points per game last season. Look for Tucker Rolf, Trevor Harris, Dalton Birch and David Jimenez to lead the Tigers this year. Pond CreekHunter under head coach David Kerr has to replace some outstanding talent but six starters return including their quarterback Josh Irvin and running back Trenton Grimes. Garber went 28-0 in 2008 and 2009 and has worked their way back to a 9-3 season last year. The Wolverines may be a year away from the final four in Class B. Merritt, Covington-Douglas and Ringwood will all compete for the final playoff spot in the district. There is always at least one good team from B-1 that doesn’t make the playoffs. Class C The Cherokee Chiefs look poised to win a Class C championship. The Chiefs won the Class B State Championship in 2010 and know how to win. But Tipton, 14-0 last year and state champions, will be looking to repeat with an experienced team returning.

District C-1 will have Sharon-Mutual, 11-2 last year, as the favorite behind quarterback Cooper Free. District C-2 will have the Tipton Tigers looking to repeat as state champions under Coach Jim Kerbo looking for win No. 200 this season. He has plenty of firepower to get back to the state championship Landon Nault game with Kingfisher quarterback Gerald White and running backs Antonio Leyja and Bryant Flores. The Tigers are experienced, deep and know how to win. District C-3 champion will be Cherokee and they lost to Forgan 24-20

Kyler Ferguson Woodward in the state semifinal game. The Chiefs, under head coach Bryce Schanbacher, have a core group that returns to go for that gold ball. Quarterback Tanner Bowman, fullback Alex Castro, running back Tanner Ducotey plus linemen Zach James and Trey Salinas will play both ways. Keep an eye on Class C; it may be a great race to the finish.

OFFENSE Coming off a bleak 1-9 year in 2012 the Cardinals bring back four offensive starters in 2013. Those returners do come at some key positions however giving the Medford faithful reason to be optimistic. Alex Koehn (6-4, 160, So.) returns at quarterback and after getting valuable experience as a freshman Koehn’s numbers have a chance to be much better in 2013. Alex will be taking the snaps from another Koehn, Eli (6-0, 280, Sr.), in 2013. In the backfield Medford will feature running backs Robbie Webb (5-7, 150, Jr.) and Ryan Banks (6-1, 200, So.). Both Webb and Banks have good speed so the Cardinals offense will try to let that work to their advantage by getting the two out on the edge as much as possible according to head coach Jonathan Hampton. Meanwhile on the outside wide receiver Cayde Neumann (6-0, 200, So.) will be Koehn’s biggest target. DEFENSE Neumann and Banks will also be key players for the Medford defense starting at both outside linebacker spots in the Cardinals 3-3 defense. Middle linebacker Austin Holder (6-0, 200, Sr.) will be the rock of the linebacking trio playing between the two speedsters. Webb will be the go-to-guy in the defensive backfield starting at corner for the Cardinals. On the defensive line nose guard Clay Caleb (5-11, 240, Jr.) will be the key factor in stopping the run up front. “We are moving to a 3-3 this year to help use our speed more and fly to the football,” Hampton said. “We aren’t going to be the biggest team but hopefully we can get to the football better and gang tackle.” Sept. 6 – vs. Forgan Sept. 13 – at Merritt Sept. 20 – vs. Seiling Sept. 27 – at Pond Creek-Hunter Oct. 4 – vs. Laverne Oct. 11 – at Covington-Douglas Oct. 17 – vs. Ringwood 18

OFFENSE Six starters return to the offensive side of the ball for the Panthers and leading rusher Trenton Grimes (5-11, 175, Sr.) will look to duplicate or improve on the 1,040 yards and 14 touchdowns from a year ago. Quarterback Josh Irvin (5-10, 165, Sr.) passed for 1,704 yards and 20 touchdowns. The two combine for a large chunk of the Panther offensive production and that should continue. Tight end Devan McKee (5-11, 170, So.) averaged 20.9 yards per catch as a freshman amassing more than 300 yards of offense. Zach Rayner (6-3, 175, Sr.) is a stud in the defensive secondary, but doubles as a TE/WR providing a spark for the offense. The line is anchored by T.J. Krittenbrink (6-3, 230, Jr.). “We have high expectations coming into the year after our runner-up finish. We have a lot of experience coming back, which should help. Laverne is the clear cut favorite in Class B, but then there are quite a few quality teams left in our class, which should make for an exciting year,” said coach David Kerr.

DEFENSE Austin Matlock (6-0, 175, Sr.) recorded 126 tackles last year from his linebacker spot. Grime also added 94 tackles giving the Panthers a tough tandem to field each Friday night. Nose guard Rick Sanchez (510, 185, Sr.) is an athletic down lineman that’s quick off the ball. Rayner will start at safety where he snagged nine interceptions for the Panthers. His ability to find the ball in traffic and become the receiver is uncanny. Krittenbrink gets the nod at defensive end. “We are still unsure about some of our defensive positions. The defensive backfield is all returning so that should be a plus. We’re looking to shore up our linebacking position as well,” said Kerr.

Eagles #DCLEagles COACH: MICHAEL THOMPSON ENROLLMENT: 53 Last 5 Years: 2008 - 9-3 2009 - 10-3 2010 - 13-0 2011 - 11-1 2012 - 8-4 OFFENSE The Eagles will have some key gaps to fill in 2013; as Harrison Muegge (5-9, 140, So.) takes over for District C-3 MVP Lawson Thompson at quarterback and Jessen Hodges (5-9, 145, Jr.) steps into the backfield to fill the big shoes of Jace Whitehead. Both Hodges and Muegge saw limited time in 2012 but will be expected to do much more this fall. Another aspect of the DCLA running game in 2013 will be fullback Lane Williams (5-10, 175, Sr.). The Eagles also bring back some big bodies up front who should help Muegge and Hodges adjust to their new starting roles fairly easily. Offensive linemen Dalton Cunningham (6-4, 275, Sr.) and Clint Tolle (6-0, 180, Sr.) along with tight end Bryson Holeman (6-0, 160, Jr.) all have significant experience in head coach Michael Thompson’s offense. The coaching staff will be another place DCLA is dealing with a new face with Thompson moving over to the head job after a long tenure as the team’s offensive coordinator. DEFENSE In the Eagles base 4-2 defense, linebackers and defensive linemen will be very crucial. Hodges, who had 67 tackles in 2012, and Williams who added 32 additional stops will be the team’s two starting linebackers. On the line Dylan Dobson (5-11, 155, Jr.) comes back after recording 47 tackles in 2012. Cunningham made 38 tackles last season and will also help clog up holes on the defensive line. Coach Thompson said that Cunningham has the size and footwork

to show his true abilities this season. Muegge meanwhile will be the go-to-guy in the secondary playing a variety of different positions. OFFENSE The Wolverines are looking to balance out the attack with Trenton Harmon (5-8, 170, Jr.) playing running back and quarterback, Trenton Harmon while Dallas Hunt (5-10, 160, Jr.) will see time at wide receiver and quarterback as well. Harmon rushed for 648 yards and five touchdowns, while Hunt caught 34 balls for 720 yards. Kellan Hostetler (6-0, 180) commands the offensive line for the Wolverines. With only three returning starters Garber is looking for younger players to step up and fill in some holes. Coach Mark Harmon enters his 14th season as head coach of the Wolverines. DEFENSE Trenton Harmon is one of the top linebackers in the class. Last season he recorded an amazing 211 tackles and 11 sacks. Hunt wasn’t too shabby either with 117 tackles and six interceptions. Colby Canaday (6-2, 180, Sr.) and Alec Monsees (5-9, 170, Jr.) keep the defensive secondary on lock down. The two make an enormous amount of tackles and ball hawk all game long. While the defense may be in better shape than the offense, look for both sides of the ball to get rolling early in the season.

OFFENSE With nine starters coming back on offense, coach Wardlaw looks for an offense that was pretty good last year to be better this year. The deciding factor in that may very well be the offensive line, which will be anchored by Tanner McCollum (5-10, 190, Sr.). Look for the Whippets to be running out of a Multiple 1 back set, with Scott Dobrinski (6-0, 175, Sr.) at quarterback. He rushed for nearly 900 yards and 14 touchdowns last season, while passing for over 1,100 yards and 12 touchdowns. His main target will be Mikey Dobrinski (6-2, 170, Sr.) who had over 250 yards in receptions last season. Also look for Will Bedwell (6-2, 180, Sr.) to make some noise at tight end and to up his productivity this season. Toting the ball will be Chance Bedwell (6-0, 175, Jr.) DEFENSE Defensively, Okeene didn’t play up to their expectations last season according to coach Wardlaw, but feel as if this year they will be back to playing good, hardnosed Whippet defense. Mitchell Howe (6-180, Jr.) returns at inside linebacker with 102 tackles on the season last year. Blake Boekman (6-0, 170, Sr.) will be at strong safety (47 tackles last season) joined by Scott Dobrinski at free safety (64 tackles last season). On the line will be Jamie Dobrinski (6-0, 220, Sr.) at tackle and Hunter Miles (6-8, 200, Sr.) at end. Coach Wardlaw is looking forward to the season and is excited about the number of players coming back but knows that they have to improve in some areas to get where they want to be. Eagles #WatongaEagles COACH: DAVID LORENZ ENROLLMENT: 175 Last 5 Years: 2008 - 7-4 2009 - 10-3 2010 - 9-2 2011 - 4-6 2012 - 6-5 OFFENSE In Watonga’s second year under head coach David Lorenz the Eagles will be trying to improve on 2012’s 6-5 overall record. Running back D’Qwan Loneman (5-11, 190, Sr.) headlines a group of seven offensive returning starters. In 2012 Loneman ran for 654 yards and 12 touchdowns on 122 carries. Wide receivers Mario Reyes (5-11, 175, Jr.) and Kaleil Pendelton (5-7, 150, Sr.) will also be vital weapons in the Watonga Spread offense. Reyes caught 40 passes for 578 yards in 2012 and Pendelton kicked in 24 more receptions for 351 yards. Offensive lineman Caleb Smith (6-4, 285, Jr.) is the Eagles foremost star up front. Lorenz said that the offense will depend greatly on a large group of talented receivers and backs. “We have a number of skill position players returning that need to be big time performers,” Lorenz said. DEFENSE On defense the Eagles will run a 3-3 Odd Stack defense according to Lorenz. Linebacker Favian Castanon (5-10, 190, Sr.) is the heart of that defense and made 78 tackles in 2012. OFFENSE In 2012 the Goldbugs put up some big offensive numbers and made it to the second round of the Class 2A playoffs in head coach Bruce Dollar’s first year with the program. Look for that trend to continue in 2013 as Alva brings back seven offensive starters. Leading what Dollar expects to be a very strong passing attack will be quarterback Ty Hooper (5-9, 180, Sr.). In 2012 Hooper threw for 2,920 yards and 35 touchdowns. Hooper’s favorite target in 2013 was wide receiver Riley Hess (6-4, 205, Sr.) who also returns in 2013. Hess caught 58 passes in 2012, 23 of which were for touchdowns racking up 1,500 yards receiving in the process. Another one of Hooper’s favorite targets, VYPEOK.COM

Leading that rushing attack will be running back Trevor Harris (5-9, 155, Sr.) and fullback Dalton Birch (6-0, 195, Jr.). At quarterback Laverne will have another returning starter in Tucker Rolf (5-11, 180, Sr.). Doing the dirty work in the trenches at the guard positions for the Tigers will be returning starters Jarren

DEFENSE Last year in the playoffs Laverne gave up an average of just 9.75 points per game and coach Allen said that Laverne fans can expect his team to play the same fundamental football that the Tigers have become known for. That fundamental play will start up front where Nine and Davis return as the starting defensive tackles. Also returning is defensive end Dalton Birch (6-0, 195, Jr.). In 2013 though the Eagles and head coach Rick Luetjen are setting their sights on another state championship. “We were disappointed last year; not getting back to the state championship game. After it was all said and done we felt like we were good enough to win it all again but ran into a very focused Vian team,” Luetjen said. “We feel like we are again going to be talented enough to get there this year and have a chance of getting the gold ball back in Hennessey where it belongs.” The Eagles have always been a run first team and according to Luetjen will still run it down opponents throats if teams can’t stop it but also said the passing game should be much improved with Dylan Hatchel (5-9, 200, Sr.) returning for another year under center. Hennessey is also very talented at receiver where Edgar Fierro (5-10, 175, Sr.) and Sonny Albarado (5-10, 175, Sr.) will be the top two options. Helping to open things up for the smashmouth run game and the passing attack as well will be a group of lineman centered around Joel Martinez (5-10, 205, Sr.) and Javy Renteria (5-11, 225, Jr.). DEFENSE The Eagles lost some big-time players from 2012 up front due to graduation but should be very strong at linebacker and in the secondary as well in 2013. At linebacker Hatchel leads a unit that also includes Abe Ortega (5-10, 215, Jr.) and Carlos Torres (5-10, 220, Sr.). In a defensive backfield that was young in 2012, but should be much improved this season according to Luetjen, will be star cornerback Steven Lott (5-8, 165, Sr.). Renteria will be the anchor on the defensive line of Hennessey’s 4-3 base defense. Renteria’s job won’t be easy as he leads a group who lost three defensive lineman in Trevor Dowell, Car Agguire and Cole Shimanek who all had over 40 tackles in 2012. Brashears has a wealth of talent on which to build upon with seven returning starters on both sides of the line. Junior quarterback Andre Lizar (5-10, 170) will direct the multiple scheme offense. He is joined in the backfield by sophomore tailback Kass Bittle (5-10, 170). Chantz Tucker (6-0, 180, Sr.) and Jadrien Stubblefield (6-1, 170, Jr.) are capable receivers at tight end. Senior Lee Olmstead (5-11, 190) is the lone returning starter on the offense line. “Lee could easily be a tailback but he has played center for us the last couple of years,” Brashears said. “Andre is a capable runner and he can throw a little. He’s one of those kids you could put anywhere on the field.” Brashears, a former offensive lineman at Fairview, is high on Olmstead’s role with the team. “The one position on the field that touches the ball every play is the center,” he said. DEFENSE Look for Olmstead, Stubblefield, Lizar and Bittle to see action on defense as well. Olmstead will anchor the d-line at one end position. Stubblefield and Lizar bring experience to the backfield while Bittle will join Elijah Voth (5-10, 165, So.) and Tucker as the catalysts at linebacker in the 3-3-2 scheme. “The Broncs are excited about the upcoming season,” Brashears said. “We have had a good turnout for summer pride and our players continue to get better. The younger Bullard takes over a program that dropped out of the Class C Top 10 in 2012 for the first time in several years. Among the eight returning starters back on offense is seniors Beau Srader, Trevor Carpenter, Chase Holley and Robbie Burris. Srader (5-8, 175) will see action at quarterback/wide receiver. Carpenter (5-7, 170) also will play some quarterback and running back. Holley (6-3, 200) brings size to the tight end position. Burris (6-2, 170) makes a nice target for either quarterback out of the running back and wide receiver positions. Chris Baxter (5-9, 160, Jr.) brings experience to the offensive line. “We need to be very good on the o-line and with the experience there, we should be able to be,” coach Tyson Bullard said. “We have a veteran team with a good group of seniors supported by a good mix of younger players.” DEFENSE All five above mentioned players will double on the defensive side of the ball. Srader, Carpenter and Burris will see time in the secondary while Holley is tabbed to play defensive end. Both guys can knock the defense around and create running lanes for the Trojans. “We have high expectations for this coming season. Making it to the semifinals two years in a row has definitely left our kids wanting more. They want to get over that hump and play one more week,” said Syms. The trio is tough for any team to handle and keep off their quarterback. “We are very solid on the defensive line,” said Syms. Opening up holes for Schoonmaker this year will be guards Lance Sessions (5-8, 215, Sr.) and Gage Heath (5-8, 210, Sr.). Chapman said that he will be looking to bring a balanced attack to the Tigers’ offense and taking snaps for Canton this year will be MJ Whiteeagle (5-11, 185, So.). The Tigers will also get a big lift from tight end Wade Webb (6-0, 185, Sr.) in both the passing attack and helping to clear the way for Schoonmaker in the run game. These offensive playmakers and the rest of the team have Chapman very excited about the 2013 season. “I’m very excited to be taking over a team with this much talent,” Chapman said. DEFENSE The Tigers will run a base 3-2 defense this season that according to Chapman will be very aggressive. That aggressive defensive mentality will begin with Sessions who will start at linebacker. Webb and Heath meanwhile will be the main cogs on the defensive line this year at defensive end and nose guard respectively. Daugherty who racked up 340 yards receiving last year and 95 more rushing is the Wildcats’ lone offensive returning starter from last year but other key players should be fullback Kyle Brown (5-10, 185, Sr.) and tailback Hunter Carl (5-9, 155, So.). Phillip Nunley (6-2, 195, So.) will play the other tight end spot for the Wildcats while Connor Nunley (5-10, 160, Fr.) is expected to take the snaps under center in an offense that will feature many formations. DEFENSE Like the Wildcats’ offense Daugherty is the lone returning starter for the defense but his presence at linebacker is a formidable one. As a sophomore in 2012 Dougherty racked up 118 tackles, eight tackles for loss and two interceptions. Brown will also play linebacker for the Wildcats this season giving Covington-Douglas some key leaders at a crucial spot. Giving the Wildcats a senior presence up front will be nose guard Lawrence Kirk (5-11, 245, Sr.). Phillip Nunley will give the Wildcats a pass rusher off the edge from his defensive end position while defensive back Hunter Carl (5-9, 155, So.) will help to anchor the secondary. With seven offensive starters returning the Red Devils are hoping to turn things around a bit in 2013. Running back Eudaldo Gomez (5-8,

170, Jr.) will be the biggest headliner returning for the Red Devils offense. In 2012 Gomez rushed for 1,530 yards and 21 touchdowns as the biggest playmaker in the team’s Shotgun Wing-T offensive scheme. Quarterback Braden Moehle (6-0, 165, Sr.) will be taking the snaps for the Red Devils this fall after throwing for 742 yards and 13 touchdowns as a junior. Wide receiver Rolando Resendiz (5-10, 170, Sr.) also returns after accounting for 478 of Moehle’s yards last season and seven of his touchdowns. Tight end Grant Glover (6-1, 180, Sr.) will be one of the key blockers for Gomez but is also a threat in the passing game after posting three touchdown catches in 2012. Ringwood’s own mini “Fridge” Tony Navarro (5-11, 200, Sr.) will play guard but in certain situations will slide into the backfield as a fullback much like the former Chicago Bears star.

DEFENSE Running a 3-2 defense Ringwood will rely on solid tackling up front and an strong secondary aided by linebackers who can cover in space to slow down opposing offenses. Gomez and Navarro will both be versatile members of the defensive front able to play both on the line and at linebacker. In 2012 Gomez made 55 tackles at nose guard and Navarro chipped in 33 more stops. In the defensive backfield Resendiz and Moehle will both star at cornerback after each player picked off three passes in 2012. Harris may be called upon to handle most of the duties at running back this season. Also look for Chris Buchmiller (Jr.), Caleb Gilchrist (Sr.), Logan Meeks (Jr.) and Alex Spurlock (Jr.).

DEFENSE Several changes to the defensive side of the ball could mean the Wildcats are making improvements up front and in the secondary. That isn’t to say that the Wildcats have no Neece offensive weapons though.

Wide receiver Joe Neece (6-0, 175, Sr.) was the Wildcats top receiver in 2012 with 1,200 yards receiving and 21 touchdowns and is back for his senior campaign this fall. Peyton Maroney (5-10, 155, Jr.) is a versatile player who will line up at receiver and running back this year along with possibly taking some snaps at quarterback. Taking the majority of the snaps at quarterback this season though will be freshman Matt Harmon. The Wildcats also return Devren Piller (6-4, 275, Jr.) who is sure to command plenty of attention up front. DEFENSE The Cashion offense won’t have much returning from 2012 but the defense is another story entirely with eight returning starters. Junior Caleb Cogburn returns at outside linebacker for the Wildcats this fall. Fellow junior Kyle Robinson will also play linebacker this year and be another returning starter. Rounding out a very experienced group of linebackers is senior John Pope. Pope will be moving to linebacker from defensive line where he started last season. In the secondary Maroney will start at safety for the thirdstraight season. Senior Hunter Suntken will also start in the defensive backfield as a corner. Another big asset for the Wildcats defense this fall will be junior defensive end Quinton Thorpe. Cashion head coach Lynn Shackleford said his defense will need to be strong this year and allow the young, inexperienced Cashion offense to lean on them at times. “Defense has always been kind of our Achilles heel. Last year I felt like we were as good as we probably ever have been, but with as many guys as we have coming back we hope to be able to lean on them early, while the offense gains experience and learns to play together,” Shackleford said. Cronister is a powerful and sturdy downhill runner who rushed for 993 yards and 12 touchdowns last year on 117 carries. Other playmakers on the offensive side of the ball will be receivers Devon Bledsoe (5-9, 165, Sr.) and Tristan Lacey (5-10, 150, Sr.). In 2012 Bledsoe caught 39 passes for 669 yards and nine touchdowns while Lacey hauled in 72 catches for 792 yards and 14 touchdowns. Distributing the ball to Crescent’s explosive playmakers will be quarterback Damion Bledsoe (5-10, 140, Jr.) who moves over from receiver to replace last year’s starter Preston Walker who threw for just under 3,000 yards and

rushed for over 400 more. On the offensive line the Tigers bring back Montana Musil (5-9, 210, Sr.). Musil will play a key role in both pass protection and run blocking in 2013. DEFENSE On the defensive side of the ball Crescent will run a 4-3 base defense and will showcase many of the same playmakers that the offense will. Musil will start on the defensive line after making 37 tackles and two sacks in 2012. Devon Bledsoe will start at linebacker this season after leading the team in tackles last season with 106 stops. Also starting at linebacker for the Tigers will be Matthew Gore. Gore recorded just under 50 tackles last season and will be a key cog of Crescent’s defense in 2013. The Chiefs outscored opponents 644-131 last season, including a pair of playoff shutouts against Maud and Balko before falling to Tipton 30-12 in the eight-man Class C state tournament championship game. “Our expectations are pretty high,” Schanbacher said. “We got pretty close last year. We have a lot of kids back, they are pretty determined.” Cherokee rolled through the regular season 10-0, while allowing

just 107 points. A nucleus of five starters return, each of whom will play both sides of the ball. The Chiefs return their entire offensive backfield. They will operate in multiple formations with an option attack on the ground and a balanced passing game, head coach Bryce Schanbacher said. Junior quarterback Tanner Bowman (5-10, 150) and seniors Alex Castro (6-2, 210) at fullback and Tanner Ducotey (5-10, 190) provide a strong running game out of the I formation. “Tanner (Bowman) is one of those kids who is tremendous athlete and great football player,” Schanbacher said. “He’s very smart, a 4.0 student. He really understands the game. Last year as a sophomore he grew so much as a player. This year already I’ve seen a lot more of that leadership. He’s a guy we will lean on in tough situations. Alex has gotten better and better every year. Opposing coaches tell me he is the kid they make sure they are aware of where he is on the field. Tanner (Ducotey) is our speed guy. He was the anchor on the sprint relay team.” The Chiefs have two returning starters on the offensive line in seniors Zach James (6-0, 240) and Trey Salinas (6-3, 245) at guard. “Trey and Zach both got experience last year. They worked hard over the summer,” Schanbacher said. DEFENSE All five aforementioned players will double dip for the Chiefs on defense. James and Salinas will anchor the defensive line while Castro will use his bulk to his advantage at linebacker. A downhill defender, Castro is a heavy-hitting machine. Ducotey and Bowman will anchor the secondary. “These five guys are the nucleus of our offense and defense,” Schanbacher said. “All have their own unique way of doing things and being leaders. Overall they have the same goal, that’s one thing that’s been nice to see. There’s no struggle for power. They all want the same thing. They are easy to coach and I know if we can come together we will earn a playoff spot,” said coach Howard. Leading the way is sophomore quarterback Kyler Hensley (5-10, 150,). Hensley has the confidence of the coaching staff and a veteran target in Landon Peach (5-11, 170, Sr.). Peach can take some pressure off Hensley with sharp route running and good hands. Hunter Miller (5-11, 155, So.) will handle the rock for the Bearcats and offensive lineman Conley Adams (6-0, 220, Jr.) will make the holes. Also look for Jacob Schnoebelen (6-0, 130, So.) at wide out. The biggest question on the offense is who will fill in on the offensive line.

DEFENSE The Bearcat defense has six returning starters back for 2013. Peach and Miller will handle the secondary duties, while Adams will start at defensive tackle. Dylan Morris (5-11, 150, So.) is a young linebacker with loads of talent, but junior Dasan Gillenwaters (6-0, 205) plays with intensity and runs through running backs on a regular basis. “We are young but play very aggressive. We will be very attack oriented and have to have our young kids make big plays,” said Howard. That aggressive style of play will create opportunities for turnovers and give the offense a chance to make something happen. OFFENSE Woodward has put together back-to-back 4-7 seasons and head coach Darris Servis believes this year’s team is capable of making a deep run in the playoffs.

“We made the playoffs both years,” he said. “We beat Douglass two years ago before falling to (eventual champion) Wagoner in the second round,” Servis said. Last season, the Boomers bowed out in the first round to Ada. Woodward is loaded at the skill positions, led by the team’s do-it-all senior Micah Kee, who is drawing interest from Tulsa as well as state schools. Kee (6-0, 195, Sr.) will once again alternate between running back and quarterback. Quarterback Cale Hixon (5-10, 165, Sr.) returns to Woodward after playing at Perry last season. His father, a former Woodward assistant, has returned to Servis’ staff. Sophomore Cade Marlatt (5-11, 155) also is battling for the QB spot. All three will play somewhere, Servis vowed. Kaleb Roach (6-5, 180, Sr.) brings size, great hands and ability to the wide receiver spot. Xavier Vo (5-8, 165, Sr.) and Kota Taylor (6-1, 220, Sr.) will share running back chores. “Kota is our strongest, fastest kid,” Servis said. “He squats over 500 and he’s super fast. He runs track. Xavier is the kind of kid you can’t hit in a phone booth. We have the ability to do so many things offensively.” VYPE Top 100 tight end Kyler Ferguson (60, 205, Sr.) is drawing attention more for his defense than offense. “Kyler has started since his sophomore year. He was our mike linebacker on that really good defensive team,” Servis said. As a coach I just put it on him and he can make those calls on the field. He’s being recruited as a linebacker. He’s a force offensively at fullback/tight end.” The biggest question offensively is the line, Servis said. Marc Gomez, a starter at nose guard, will start at center as well. “He’s very smart, he has already picked up our schemes,” Servis added. Cody Coats (6-2, 290, Jr.) is a true offensive lineman, Servis said. “He may be closer to 320 pounds,” the coach said. “He’s a strong, big kid. If we can get him wound up, he will overpower people.” Devin Comstock (6-2, 225, Jr.), Garrett Hines (5-11, 200, Jr.), Seth Mead (63, 180, Sr.) and Luis Corona (5-10, 220, Sr.) will also figure prominently on the offensive line. “We could be explosive on offense,” Servis said. “If we can come out quickly and establish ourselves and get after people from Day 1, we can be a very good offensive team. If the kids believe in themselves, the sky’s the limit.” DEFENSE Ferguson and Kee will be the featured players in the 4-3 multiple set defensive scheme. Taylor will also play defensive end in addition to his running back chores. “Kyler understands the game more than just the average kid,” Servis said. “If I need a scheme called, he’s all over it. He’s pretty special in that way. He’s an unbelievable leader. We moved Micah from defensive back to linebacker. He can squat the house. He’s revamped in a new position and has

really picked it up well.” Marc Gomez (5-9, 210, Sr.) is back at defensive line while the secondary will look to Jason Alexander (6-0, 160, Sr.) for leadership. “Marc lives in the weight room,” Servis said. The coach said Jason Alexander has been a pleasant surprise in the secondary “He’s probably our best corner,” Servis said. “Caleb also plays back there but he’s had a back issue. Coach Mark Boyd believes they can. Two players are at the center of the quarterback position. Baylor Boyd (6-0, 170, So.) and Preston Atwood (6-0, 173, Jr.) are two great athletes the coaching staff will use in several ways. Running back Chris Walker (6-0, 180, Sr.) is the defending state champion in the 400 meters and runs hard with the football. Adrian Moore (5-8, 140, Sr.) and Kristian Stitt (5-8, 145, Sr.) are two capable receivers who stretch the field, but the Trojans also have Jonny Volpe and Adam Eaton who have good hands and speed. DEFENSE Defensive end Nathan Meier (5-11, 190, Jr.) leads the way on defense as his play containing the edge becomes more dependable. Blake Gabriel (6-4, 170, Sr.) will start at wide receiver where he accounted for 460 yards of offense last season. Tight end Charles Clardy (6-6, 280, Sr.) figures heavy into the offense as a blocking end and a receiver who beats linebackers with his athleticism. The offensive line features two-year starter Dalton Snow (6-0, 205, Sr.) and tackle Hunter Lamle (6-0, 280, So.) who started last year as well. “Several new faces will provide an exciting season,” said coach Myers. A few underclassmen will need to mature and play for the Mustangs this season. DEFENSE “Improved speed should allow for better performance by Clardy and Snow,” said Myers. Clardy recorded 12 sacks last year from his defensive end spot, while Snow had 35 solo tackles. Gabriel and Courter have the task of blanketing offensive receivers. Both players are capable of big plays. Dominic Benites (6-1, 245, Jr.) is the animal in the middle of the defensive line. With 30 tackles to his credit during his sophomore 28

Longhorns #ChisholmLonghorns COACH: JOEY REINART ENROLLMENT: 244 Last 5 Years: 2012 - 5-5 2011- 4-7 2010 – 1-9 2009 – 8-5 2008 – 6-5 OFFENSE A heavy dose of the ground game is what’s in store for Chisholm opponents this season as fullback Bryce Stewart (5-10, 195, Sr.) leads the charge. Stewart rushed for 1,100 yards last season bringing his career total to just over 2,300 yards. With any run first offense the key to success lies with the offensive line. James Lee (6-4, 260, Jr.) and Matt Wilson (6-0, 190, Sr.) anchor the line at the two tackle positions, while Jake Curless (5-9, 200, So.) will fill one of the guard spots. “We will rely heavily on Bryce Stewart from the fullback position in our run based offense. Talented quarterbacks and receivers will allow for the development of a good passing game through play action,” said head coach Joey Reinart. Brock Chance (5-7, 160, Jr.) is another running back who figures into the run game as well

as the passing game. With eight returning starters on offense the coaching staff is excited to stick with their bread and butter running game while developing a solid passing attack. DEFENSE Leading tackler Britton Yunker (5-9, 185, Jr.) is back after an 82 tackle performance in his sophomore season. Taking care of business up front are tackles Justin Pfrehm (5-7, 200, Jr.) and Turner Reed (5-10, 220, Sr.). Reed accounted for 33 tackles and two sacks last year. Linebackers Chance and Brock Voss (5-9, 165, Sr.) will patrol the middle of the field looking to stuff the run and break up their opponents passing game. Voss notched two interceptions last season to go with his 43 solo tackles. “Our returning starters on defense gained valuable experience playing in the same system throughout their careers,” said Reinart. “We’re very excited about the enthusiasm and experience coming back from a 5-5 season. Guns N’ Roses once had a hit song called “Patience.” The song unfortunately could describe what it has been like to be a Yellowjackets fan over the last several years. Kingfisher head coach Jeff Myers and the Yellowjackets have nearly run out of patience however after finishing as the Class 3A runner-up three of the last four seasons including another silver ball in 2012. This fall the Kingfisher offense will rely heavily on running back Landon Nault (5-10, 185, Sr.). In 2012 Nault ran for over 2,000 yards and will be expected to carry even more of the load this fall. Taking some of the pressure off of Nault will be wide receiver Keiton Ely (6-0, 170, Sr.). Ely caught 14 passes for 280 yards and six touchdowns last season. Tight end Jace Sturnberger (6-4, 220, Jr.) will be another valuable weapon in Kingfisher’s

offensive arsenal.

You can’t mention the Yellowjackets offensive success however without talking about their always dominant offensive line. This year the three largest figures on that line will be Gatlin Squires (6-2, 200, Sr.), Kaden Jackson (6-3, 235, Sr.) and Trey Buckner (6-1, 230, Sr.). DEFENSE

Bringing back six defensive starters from last year’s team the Kingfisher defense will have plenty of weapons of its own.

“You are going to see us do pretty much the same thing we have always done. We are pretty experienced in the secondary and at linebacker, we just won’t have as much depth up front but I expect a lot of good things,” Myers said. Jackson and Squires will both be two-way players starting on

the defensive line. Kingfisher also returns linebacker Triston Ransom who racked up 93 tackles in 2012. Joining Ransom at linebacker will be Dylan Blundell (5-9, 205, Sr.). Blundell totaled 84 tackles in 2012. Starting at defensive back will be Nick Smith (5-7, 160, So.). Smith had a fantastic freshman campaign with 55 total tackles and three interceptions. Nault also played in the secondary late in the year for the Yellowjackets last season but Myers said he hopes not to have to use him as much on defense this fall. Overall Myers said his goals for this season are the same as they are every season.

“We want to first and foremost win our district. Our kids go into every year with the mentality of its just the next guys turn to step up. We still expect big things and our goal is still to try and play for a state title,” Myers said.

Brooklyn Wiens: Andrew real estate athlete of the month Brooklyn Wiens looks to lead OBA back to the state tournament. Oklahoma Bible Academy senior volleyball player Brooklyn Wiens is the Enid Area Athlete of the Month. Wiens is an outside hitter for the Lady Trojans and according to head coach James Ward has stepped up as a leader both on the court and in the locker room this year. Wiens said the decision to become a more vocal leader this year was a simple one. “Stepping into this season as a senior, I could either be upset that it is my last year to play high school

ball or I could take advantage of it and see it as a great opportunity to be a positive leader to the rest of my teammates. That’s what I have decided to do,” Wiens said. “Being vocal is definitely a key part to that role because it involves encouraging others. This is so important in order for us to have a successful and bonded team. Overall I think that this role comes naturally to me. The seniors in year’s past were great examples that I look up to and now this is my year to be that leader, along with the rest of the senior girls.”

Next year Wiens plans to attend John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Arkansas. Wiens said that she hasn’t decided on a major yet but is going to “continually be seeking what Christ has in store for my life.” Wiens added that she is currently interested in becoming a physical therapy assistant.

Kim Brady - Chisholm Mom Mother of Chisholm High School tight end and linebacker Karsten Brady. Kim Brady is a “do it all” mom according to Chisholm high school athletic director and head football coach Joey Reinhart, Reinhart witnesses Kim’s contribution first hand. “She really does a little bit of everything making sure to take care of jobs so that coaches don’t have to worry about it. That includes being part of the booster club, making meals for the kids on road trips and just helping to spur interest among other parents to help,” Reinhart said. Kim’s husband Scott echoed Reinhart’s statements. “She is as active as any parent could be. She does things like running the concession stand, cleaning up the concession area after games, selling t-shirts, making sure kids have water and Gatorade after road games or even making homemade cookies for the kids,” Scott said. Although Karsten stays extremely busy playing football, powerlifting and golf. Kim doesn’t only limit herself to helping with those sports. According to Scott, Kim helps with nearly every sport whether that be helping to organize a few things for a track meet or helping make sure the concession stand runs smoothly at a basketball game. Kim has served on the booster club for many years and continous to go above and beyond for Chisholm athletics. We are happy to salute her for the Mom of the Month.

Awareness of concussions and other head injuries have grown over the past several years but doctor Jarrod Mueggenborg, an emergency physician at St. Mary’s says that players, parents, coaches and trainers still need to stay vigilant when any symptoms of a head

“Concussion awareness has definitely gone up but the most important thing to still remember is that any time you start to experience any symptoms like dizziness, fatigue, headaches, irritability, nausea or confusion players need to get in to a doctor and get checked out,” Mueggenborg said. “If in doubt I urge all players who think they suffered a head injury to see their athletic trainer, go to a local ER or see their primary physician.” Athletes who suffer a head injury also need to be watched for 24 to 48 hours afterward according to Mueggenborg.

Mueggenborg added that the primary head injury he sees in the emergency department at St. Mary’s is concussions but that the most common injuries he sees in general are ankle sprains, fractures and knee injuries.

Mueggenborg said that injuries like the ones he mentioned have increased in today’s world of athletes.

“According to recent studies, the better fit an

athlete is the better they can prevent injuries but you just can’t prevent all of them,” Mueggenborg said. “Ultimately athletes are aggressive competitors and not all types of injuries are preventable.”

Mueggenborg advised that anytime athletes experience any symptoms like limited range of motion, numbness, tingling, or weakness then they need to have that looked at by a doctor.

Enid Pacers senior volleyball player Sarah Blakely is the Enid Area Character Counts Athlete of the Month. Blakely is a middle blocker for the Pacers volleyball team and in the spring plays center back on the Enid soccer team.

Blakely will also be part of the Enid Freshman Connection Crew this year, a group of seniors who will speak to freshmen classes and answer any questions they may have about the school. Blakely will also be heavily involved with community service projects this year through the school’s AT group. After high school Blakely wants to play either soccer or volleyball in college and major in pre-med. Blakely said she hasn’t decided on a school yet but said it has always been a dream to go to OU but that she is also

Chisholm Softball Preview The Chisholm Lady Longhorns fast-pitch softball team made it to the regional tournament in 2012 before being eliminated by the Newkirk Lady Tigers. In 2013 Chisholm is hoping to take that next step according to head coach Kevin Burns. “Our goals are to win a minimum of 20 games and to be a state tournament caliber team by playoff time,” Burns said. Leading the charge for Chisholm this season will be a trio of seniors comprised of Megan Pettus, Caisha Boedeker and Alexa Pickens. Burns said that all three will be relied on heavily for several different reasons. “We are expecting Megan (Pettus) to step up as a team leader and handle the bulk of the pitching duties. Caisha (Boedeker) and Alexa (Pickens) will be counted on to be offensive threats and provide senior leadership,” Burns said. Pettus will have some big shoes to fill this year as she replaces standout pitcher Erin Norrie who graduated in May. Helping Pettus in the circle this season will be junior McKinle Hodges. When she isn’t toeing the rubber Hodges will start in the infield for the Lady Longhorns. Burns also listed several other players that he will be counting on to contribute this year. “Sophomores Harlie Black, Kammi Gruber, Mackenzie Jones, Megan Langton, and Hannah White are all expected to contribute as infielders and outfielders,” Burns said. “Gruber’s experience and knowledge, aggressiveness and willingness to play hard will provide much needed VYPEOK.COM

leadership by example.” Yet another key player this year will be junior catcher Kenzee Butler. According to Burns Butler has continued to improve behind the plate and will provide some power in the middle of the lineup. With so many players ready to step up it is easy to see exactly why Burns has set his goals so high for this team. OBA Volleyball Preview In 2012 the Oklahoma Bible Academy Lady Trojans volleyball team made it to the Class 5A state tournament before being ousted by Christian Heritage. This fall the main goals for the Lady Trojans and head coach James Ward are looking for more of the same. “As always our goal is to get to the state tournament and try to win the thing,” Ward said. OBA has several players back this season that will help get the team back to that level this year. That group starts with sophomore setter Ashley Atwood who started last season as a freshman and has more maturity, experience and physical tools coming into this year according to Ward. Seniors Hannah Jackson, Brooklyn Wiens and Sydney Downing will all also be key leaders on this year’s squad according to Ward. The Lady Trojans also have two defensive specialists in Madison and Savannah Price who are the daughters of former NBA player Brent Price. Ward had high praise for both sisters but said that Madison has a chance to have a real

Kammi Gruber Chisholm breakout season this year. “Madison has really proven herself through team camp. I don’t know if she is trying to outdo her sister or what but she is really showing a lot of desire and the better she gets the better our team will be,” Ward said. As far as the schedule goes Ward said he is looking forward to several matches this year. “Ever since I have been at OBA we have always scheduled really tough. We will open with Stillwater and Heritage Hall the first week and those will tell us a lot about where we are at early this year,” Ward said. “I also always look forward to our pack the house night that we will do later in the year against someone in our conference.” Enid Volleyball Preview Coming off a 25-10 season last year Enid Pacers volleyball coach Steve Bloom said that he has several big goals this year. “We want to improve on our record from last season since we have most of our players back from last year,” Bloom said. “Also we want to repeat as academic state champions. I think the classroom stuff is just as important as the volleyball if not more important and last season we had a combined

Enid Softball Team 3.973 grade point average as a team.” The Pacers lost just two players off of last year’s squad and will be looking to several seniors to step up and lead the team. That group is mainly comprised of Chloe Cordell, Grace Enmeier, Sahelyn Vaughn and Sarah Blakely according to Bloom. Along with those seniors Bloom added he is looking to several younger players to make a big splash this season. Chief among those young players are junior McKenna James and sophomore Katrina Blomm. Playing at the Class 6A level the Pacers see their fair share of tough competition but Bloom said one match in particular stands out. “This year we open the season against Union and I think that will be a good measuring stick of where we are at early on in the year,” Blomm said. The Union match was scheduled for August 14 but several key opponents still loom on the schedule in September, including matches against geographical rivals like Stillwater, Bartlesville and Ponca City.

Enid Softball Preview The Pacers softball team has its goals set high according to head coach Marsha Cusack despite losing a big bat in Courtney Chelf and playing in possibly one of the toughest districts in 6A. “As always we want to go to the state tournament and we also want to win 75 percent of our games,” Cusack said. “I also want the girls to have a good time and get what they should out of athletics and learn valuable life lessons. My goal is always for the players to come out of the season as better people than when it began.”

With Chelf gone Cusack said she will be looking to several other players to step up and lead this year. First among that group will be 6-2 left-handed pitcher Ally Lewis. “Ally is great at the plate and her pitches have been coming along like they should, she just had a great summer and has continued to improve,” Cusack said. Senior second baseman Abby Lee, senior outfielder Shelly Mueller and senior shortstop Haven Bay will all also be key players for Cusack’s squad this year. Enid will also be a very young team this year and Cusack singled out three members of what she called an extremely talented freshman class who will all probably crack the starting lineup by midseason. The young trio is comprised of Keara Jenkins, Marybel Garcia and Alicia Chain. Cusack also added that sophomore Brooke Sears did not play a lot of varsity last year but should make a big splash this season.

We asked Northwest Oklahoma fast-pitch softball players some serious hard-hitting questions just before the season got underway. Ever wonder what goes through the head of a top high school softball player as they prepare for the season? We do too. Here’s what we found… VYPE: What goes through your head when you are about to play or when you’re on the field?

Kimbra Thomas-Hammon: Before the game I always tell myself that no matter what happens I want to be able to say I tried my very best and gave it my all! While I’m playing I always have to make myself remember that I am going to make mistakes and those mistakes I have to just learn from and not put my head down! That’s something my coaches have always told me! So I try hard to really remember that!

Kala Morris-Hammon: Before the game starts I always wonder if I’m going to do good or not. Or if people think I’m a good player. And during the game I always ask myself if the ball is hit to me what am I going to do. Saydi Dowd told me that when I was a freshman, “Kala, you always think the ball is going to he hit to you and what you’re gonna do next.” And sometimes when a big girl gets up to bat I wonder if I’m gonna get hit in the face. (laughs) Madi Grellner-Okarche: I just try to stay focus before the game and just give 100% on the field and just do whatever I can to help the team!

Paden Blevins-Crescent: It’s my senior year and I want to leave everything out on the field and not have any regrets. I don’t want any ‘what if’s” and “could’ve been’s.” VYPE: What’s been your most memorable moment in your softball career?

Kala Morris-Hammon: My most memorable softball moment would be when my sophomore year and I had a hurt ankle and I still played and we were playing leedey in the finals. We were on point that game. Winning state that year was the best feeling and a memory ill always remember.

Kimbra Thomas-Hammon: My most memorable softball moment would have to be when we won state in fastpitch of 2011 I will never be able to describe that feeling! Madi Grellner-Okarche: Most memorable moment would be when our team made it far in the playoffs for the first time in Okarche softball history. Morgan Vogt-Okarche: Making it to state in spring ball last year.

Hannah Prosser-Crescent: My most memorable softball moment was against Bishop McGuinness. Our coach was thrown out, wrongly. All the girls just came together and made greats plays left and right. We came back with the win.

Kennedy Winn-Leedey: My most memorable moment was when we got the last out to win the state slowpitch against Red Oak! It’s a feeling a player can never forget. Paden Blevins-Crescent: Our team is always making memorable moments, but my most memorable moment is when we will win state! VYPE: How excited are you and the team to get on the field this year?

Kimbra Thomas-Hammon: I am pretty excited! I love softball. My team and I have been working really hard to get ready for this season, so we’re pretty excited to get out there on the field. Kala Morris-Hammon: I’m pretty excited to see how we will do. We will have to work harder then we ever have, but I think we will be better then what people say and think. I’m excited to show people we can be good. Madi Grellner-Okarche: The team is really

excited and ready for the softball season. We have been practicing for several weeks now. Right now I’m just encouraging my teammates and hopefully I can make it back soon.

Morgan Vogt-Okarche: We’re all very excited to start playing again! Hannah Prosser-Crescent: My team and I are stoked to get on the field this year. We’ve been practicing hard. All we are focused on is State!

Chania Walker-Hammon: I’m very excited because this will be my senior year and I’d do and give anything to end up at state this year. We will have to work a lot since we’re so young, but we can do it. Paden Blevins-Crescent: We are all super excited to get on the field and show everyone what we got this year! VYPE: What’s the funniest thing you’ve ever seen or had happen to you on the field?

Kimbra Thomas-Hammon: The funniest thing I’ve seen i don’t even know if I can pick one my team is always doing crazy stuff!

Madi Grellner-Okarche: Some really funny moments playing softball is probably the songs our younger classmates come up with to chant while people bat. We all have our own individual chant and it makes it really fun. Kala Morris-Hammon: Funniest thing would be when I was playing in the state games and I could barely walk. Everyone was laughing because I was hobbling along, went for a bunt and fell. Not funny then, but funny now.

Chania Walker-Hammon: When coach Trent fell down because a foul ball down third base line was coming at him. Kennedy Winn-Leedey: Funniest moment would be the time our team decided to play freeze tag in the outfield.
