THE SCOOP: Lafferty is almost a running back disguised as a quarterback. Last season he ran for over 1800 yards and threw for basically half of that. Any way you slice it though, he’s dangerous. With a new head coach at Watonga this year it will be interesting to see what Lafferty can do in his senior campaign.
THE SCOOP: Harman may arguably be the best quarterback in the entire state. He’s been Cashion’s starting QB ever since he got to high school and has led his team to back-to-back state title games, winning a total of 10 playoff games. With over 9,000 career passing yards, Harman could also easily break the state’s all-time passing record in 2016.
THE SCOOP: One of the state’s top rushers last season as one of only two backs to get over the 2,500 yard mark. He averaged over nine yards per carry and over 200 yards per game. One of only two eight-man football players on he VYPE Top 100 Nelson is a standout on defense as well and had over 80 tackles last season.
THE SCOOP: Gomez is an amazing athlete. He’s the shooting guard on the Garber basketball team and then stars as a quarterback and defensive back. A true dual-threat quarterback Gomez ran for over 1,000 yards last season and threw for over 2,000. He also recorded over 100 tackles on defense. This guy just gets it done.

With the announcement of the VYPE Top 100 the question that is constantly asked of me is “How did so-and-so not make the list?” Other forms of this question are asked too, like “Were there any kids from team X considered?” I love answering these questions because I think it helps our readers understand the process of selecting the VYPE Top 100 which is always a good thing. I’m always honest if you ask me these questions and I always will try to throw some names out there who were close to making the cut but just missed. That brings me to the purpose of this article. The Top 100 is a great guide to see 100 fantastic players but there are also a lot of talented players who didn’t make the list. Those guys are players you need to try to catch in action as well so I came up with this list of five guys who you need to keep an eye on if you are a football fan in this area.
hits you, you feel it. If you get a chance make sure to get out to Alva and watch this kid terrorize opposing offenses. Nick Roof – Thomas: Roof can flat out play. That’s really the only way to describe it. Fans will find him lining up at linebacker or defensive end and from either spot he always
seems to make his way to the ball. Roof has speed and good size so he truly is a matchup nightmare for everyone else in Class A. Definitely worth the price of admission.
Ethan Harzman – Alva: Harzman is a guy who brings his lunch pail to work everyday. His workman-like, blue-collar attitude are everything you want Connor Pasby – Chisholm: in a linebacker. When this kid This guy’s name is going to
pop up all year long. Pasby is a great athlete and a player who constantly brings fans to their feet. He will be a leader for Chisholm this year and he’s a major reason why you could make a good case for why the Longhorns will play for a gold ball in December. Ross Shawnee – Geary: You want a big play? Call Ross Shawnee. Whether it’s carrying the ball, catching passes out of the backfield or returning kicks, every time Shawnee touches the pigskin people hold their breath in anticipation of what he will do. He can take it to the house from anywhere on the field. Eight-man football gets really fun when you get to see players like this on the field. Dayton Wymore – Hennessey: Wymore can play all over the field. On offense he will be a dynamic playmaker at tight end. On defense he’s a dominant force at linebacker who led the Eagles in tackles last year. Hennessey is once again a team to watch in Class 2A this season and Wymore is a big reason why.

AUGUST 2016
With the release of the 2016 Oklahoma Pigskin Preview, VYPE FANS CHOICE football team from a series of polls on the websit a look and decide for yourself, which team you’d like to coach Kendrick. Let us know your opinions, tweet him
Matt Harmon – Cashion: I’ve said it before and I will say it again. In my opinion Matt Harmon could be the best quarterback in the state regardless of class size. This kid can spin it. You want to see him play.
Connor Pasby – Chisholm: I’ve been singing this guy’s praises ever since last season. He’s an electric playmaker who just makes things happen when he touches the ball. He should be the main ball carrier in Chisholm’s offense this year and that only means one thing; an increase in production. Well that and a lot of missed tackles as opponents try to bring him down.
Colton Troxell – Enid: Troxell has speed to burn and when he gets into the open field there aren’t many guys that can catch him. Every quarterback wants to throw to a receiver like this. Garret Padilla – Cherokee: Padilla made the fans’ choice team as well and I have to say you guys got this right. He’s 6-foot-5 and 305 pounds.
Nick Roof
That’s big in any class. If had to stand in the pocket I’d want this guy protecting me. Logan Long – Woodward: He’s big, strong and athletic. You can’t ask for a lot more out of a defensive lineman. Long will be a nightmare for any lineman who draws the assignment of trying to block him. Buzz Emery – Crescent: Sometimes when you look at Class A football players they don’t always look the part. That isn’t the case with Emery. He’s 5-foot-11 and 205 pounds. Trust me when I say if this kid hits you, your going to feel it. Cristian Gomez – Garber: A lot of fans will know Gomez for his skills as a quarterback. Crazy thing is he may be a better defensive back than a quarterback. Last year he had 124 tackles, proving he is truly an impact player on both sides of the ball.
Gatlin Goodson
FAN’S CHOICE
Northwest Oklahoma offered readers the chance to select the te VYPENWOK.com that totaled more than 109,000 votes. Take h…the Fans’ Choice or the lineup chosen by NWOK editor Kyle m your thoughts @KyleKendrick1 or @VYPEOK QB – Todd Sander – Seiling: If you are a casual fan you have probably heard of Seiling’s stand out running back Jaestin Nelson. If you are really in the know however, Sander should also be a familiar name. He’s a dual threat quarterback who will be counted on to be a major contributor on a great team this year. RB - Hayden Colwell – Alva: Colwell may be the best back in the area you’ve never heard of. He ran for over 1,000 yards last year and helped the Goldbugs make the playoffs. This year you can bank on more of the same.
WR - Dayton Wymore – Hennessey: A versatile athlete Wymore will do big things for the Eagles this year. He can play tight end or wide receiver plus he’s a great linebacker for the Hennessey defense. OL - Jake Davis – Pond Creek-Hunter: Davis has the size to be imposing at 5-foot-11 and 225 pounds but he’s also athletic for how big he is. He
Todd Sander
will be the Panthers’ leader up front this year and could help his team to a deep playoff run. DL - Caleb Roberts – Cherokee: Roberts is part of Cherokee’s twin towers and with his imposing 6-foot-6, 230-pound frame lining up at defensive end look for opposing linemen to have a lot of long nights. LB - Braylin Hill – Shattuck: You can’t ever discount big game experience and Hill has that. On a team with some of the strongest tradition in Oklahoma, Hill will once again be counted on to help the Indians compete for yet another gold ball.
DB - Mason McKee – Chisholm: Great choice by the fans to get McKee on the team. He’s a playmaker on the back end of Chisholm’s defense who opposing quarterbacks always need to be aware of. My prediction? McKee will have multiple interceptions he takes back for scores this year.

OFFENSE Last year the Longhorns had the best year in school history and went 13-1, advancing all the way to the state semifinals. Building to that point over the past several years was tough enough, now the Longhorns face a brand new challenge…becoming the hunted and not the hunter. In the Longhorns’ Frankenstein-like Hybrid Wing-T any number of players are likely to carry the ball and have an impact. Chief among those players are Mason McKee (5-11, 170, Sr.) and Connor Pasby (5-9, 170, Sr.). Last season McKee rushed for 412 yards, had 199 yards receiving and also returned several kicks. Pasby meanwhile led the team in rushing with 891 yards and also had 197 receiving yards. Other players likely to get some carries this year are Brock Elmore (5-7, 165, Sr.) and Brice Chance (5-11, 175, Jr.). Colton Wichert (6-3, 175, Sr.) is another key playmaker in the Chisholm offense and will be a major target in the passing attack. DEFENSE On defense Chisholm will run a 4-4 scheme with athletes at every level. Doing the dirty work up front you will find Joe Reed (6-0, 285, Sr.) at defensive tackle and Lawson Broadbent (6-0, 170, Sr.)
CHISHOLM LONGHORNS
Connor Pasby at defensive end. Elmore and Beaux Biggers (5-10, 205, Sr.) will head up Chisholm’s linebacker corp. Lastly, in the secondary McKee and Pasby will both be leaders counted on to produce big numbers. “We are excited to build off a semifinal appearance. With numbers in the 60’s we should be able to build depth and continue to be solid,” Chisholm head coach Joey Reinart said.

Ashley Handing - Enid High School “My goal this season is to play my best, get better, but also know that when I stumble I can get right back up and try again. I want to do that for this team, Handing said. Outside of sports Handing also excels in the classroom, carrying a 4.0 grade point average. For her dedication to all three sports, and her work in the classroom Ashley Handing is the Enid Female Athlete of the Month.
Sometimes an athlete comes along that is just so special there is no denying it. The first time you see them compete you just know you are watching something great. At the professional level guys like LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Ken Griffey Jr. and Peyton Manning fit that bill. But that kind of thing can happen at the high school level as well. In Enid it has, it did with the case of star athlete Ashley Handing. As a freshman last year Handing played at the varsity level in three different sports, softball, basketball and tennis. On the softball field Handing is a first baseman and outfielder. At the plate Handing is a slaphitter, using her outstanding speed to leg out balls on the ground and cause opponents fits on the basepaths. After helping the Pacers softball team to a 14-21 record a year ago Handing said this year her goals for her sophomore season are to constantly improve and be a great teammate. AUGUST 2016

Northwest OK Football Preview PIONEER-PLEASANT VALE MUSTANGS COACH: AUGUST OVERSTREET ENROLLMENT: 152 LAST 5 YEARS: 2011 - 4-6 2012 - 2-8 2013 - 1-9 2014 - 3-7 2015 - 8-4
OFFENSE A year ago Pioneer had one of its best seasons in recent history when they went 8-4 and advanced to the Class B quarterfinals before suffering a defeat at the hands of eventual state runner-up Keota. This season the Mustangs bring back three starters from the 2015 season and chief among them is Chris Faw Faw (6-1, 175, Sr.) at quarterback. Last season Faw Faw rushed for 1,315 yards and threw for 509 more and racked up 34 total touchdowns. JD Valtr (5-10, 178, Sr.) is also back this year at running back after picking up 687 yards and four touchdowns on the ground last year. Braden Hoy (5-10, 155, Jr.) is also likely to see time at running back this year. Kody McVey (6-1, 190, Jr.) will also line up in the backfield this year at fullback but will also play some tight end as well this year. On the offensive line Michael Gehay (6-1, 220, Sr.) and Kaleb Smith (6-0, 190, Jr.) will be the support structure the Mustangs’ offense is built on. DEFENSE On the defensive side of the ball the Mustangs will attack out of a 3-2 front with a defensive line that rivals any in the eight-man ranks. Gehay and smith will both start on that line with McVey also playing some defensive end. McVey’s athleticism though will also allow him to play some linebacker depending on where his coaches need him most. Valtr and Hoy will play the linebacker spots this season as well this year bringing major speed to the middle of the Mustangs defense. Faw Faw though will be the player who is counted on to make a great amount of plays this year in the secondary, either at cornerback or safety. Last season Faw Faw had six interceptions and 47 tackles and could see improvements in both those categories this year. Sept. 2 – vs. Coyle 16

OFFENSE Coming off a 6-4 season in 2015 the Chiefs have high hopes for this season. Hunter Lovell (6-0, 180, Sr.) will get the start at quarterback and lead Waukomis’ Spread attack. A great athlete, Lovell is also a fantastic basketball player, and that athleticism will make him tough for opposing defenses to contain this year. Lovell’s top target in the passing game this year will be Riley Williams (5-9, 181, Sr.). Running backs Phillip Busbee (5-8, 123, Sr.) and Lane Braggs (5-9, 135, Jr.) will also catch their fair share of passes this year along with splitting carries in the rushing attack. On the offensive line DK Williams (6-1, 98, Sr.) will be a pillar of strength and protection. DEFENSE DK Williams will continue his leadership role on the defensive line, starting at defensive end. Kade Wheeler (5-9, 180, Jr.) will play opposite of Williams and could see some favorable matchups due to Williams getting so much attention. At linebacker David Demoret (5-10, 168, So.) and Braggs will be the go-to-guys in the middle of the field. On the back end of the defense Riley Williams and Matthew Buck (6-0, 125, So.) will both start at cornerback Sept. 1 – vs. Covington-Douglas Sept. 9 – at Kremlin-Hillsdale Sept. 16 – at Sharon-Mutual Sept. 23 – vs. OKC Patriots Sept. 30 – at Canton Oct. 7 – vs. Seiling Oct. 14 – vs. Cherokee Oct. 20 – at Ringwood Oct. 28 – vs. Pioneer

OFFENSE An astonishing nine starters are back to the Broncs offense in 2016. Kremlin-Hillsdale is a run-oriented offense focused on traps and dives. Austin da Silva (Sr.) and Briley Craig (Sr.) are the big boys up front who clear the way for the running attack. Seth Schrader (Sr.) is a dynamic player who can catch passes, run the ball and make people miss in space. Elijah Norwood (Jr.) and Nathanal Snodgrass (Jr.) add depth to the running back group. DEFENSE Defensively, the Broncs want to let the linebackers focus on stopping the run so the secondary can put their efforts into thwarting opposing passing attacks. Da Silva is a linebackerdefensive lineman hybrid in coach Jeremy Brashears 3-2-3 base defense. Craig is an impact defensive lineman along side da Silva. Schrader and Norwood both lineup at corner back and are both vital to stopping the pass. Snodgrass joins da Silva in the linebacker corps, adding depth to that group. LAST 5 YEARS: 2011 - 9-3 2012 - 5-5 2013 - 2-8 2014 - 6-5 2015 - 3-7
OFFENSE The Wildcats return solid balance to their offense, starting with quarterback Gavin Smith (5-11, 180, Jr.). The playmaking quarterback ran for 773 yards and 12 touchdowns, along with 524 passing yards and seven passing touchdowns. Up front, journeyman Dalton Daugherty (5-11, 240, Jr.) who started all 10 games last year. Slot receiver Brandon Row (6-0, 160, Sr.) returns to his spot after catching two touchdowns and 257 receiving yards. Split end Lane Williams (5-10, 170, Jr.) finished with 282 receiving yards and three touchdowns last season. Running back Connor Nunley (511, 175, Sr.) missed time to injury in 2015, but still ran for 342 yards and four touchdowns.
DEFENSE The Wildcat defense will need to stay healthy in 2016 in order for them to succeed. Linebacker Dalton James (6-1, 170, Jr.) is the big name returning to this defense. James finished last season with 112 tackles and an interception. Row plays outside linebacker, and his 91 tackles last season were one of the highest totals on the team. Kavan Crosby (5-10, 235, Jr.) and Luis Rojas (5-11, 250, Sr.) both play defensive line. Croby and Rojas finished with 11 and 59 tackles, respectively. Kurt Ender (5-8, 160, Sr.) plays the other outside linebacker, and he finished with 66 tackles and two picks last year. Teacher of the Month Gina Roberts – Enid High School
doing. I want them to make sure they see me at those events and know that they are supported and cared about,” Roberts said
Before coming to Enid, Roberts taught at places like Florence, South Carolina and Dallas, Texas. After spending some time teaching at Dallas ISD, Roberts left the teaching field and was working in retail but she soon found that she missed the classroom. With the knowledge that she wanted to get back to teaching Roberts began applying at places like South Carolina, Texas and Georgia; places she had lived or worked in before. Then she decided to try and apply places where she hadn’t been before though, and immediately thought of Oklahoma.
From there things took off. Roberts sent in her resume to Enid on a Sunday, then sent an introductory email on the following Monday, then on Tuesday she got a phone call, on Thursday she interviewed and was hired shortly thereafter.
Gina Roberts cares about her students. You can tell that just from one conversation. Roberts is a science teacher at Enid High School and along with that is the co-sponsor of the Black Heritage Union. But caring about her students doesn’t stop there. She also helped with prom this year and tries to go to as many events as she can to support her students. “I try to support them in whatever activity or sport they are

Roberts tries to teach Science in a practical way and help her students see that the theories they learn in her class apply to their everyday lives. Overall though, Roberts said she hopes students walk out of her classroom with a knowledge of themselves.
“I want them to leave my room knowing who they are, and who they aren’t. Knowing themselves helps them to understand and appreciate other people around them, but you can’t appreciate others until you appreciate yourself and that’s what I hope they do when they leave my class,” Roberts said. For her dedication to her students Gina Roberts is the Enid Area Teacher of the Month.
GUTHRIE BLUEJAYS
OFFENSE Stepping up to play a tough schedule is something the Bluejays are familiar with and head coach Kelly Beeby recognizes the results early on in the season could set the tone for district play. “A tough non-district slate versus Class 6AII opponents Enid and Ponca City in addition to 5A traditional rival Shawnee should prepare us for key early district showdowns with Carl Albert and Bishop McGuinness,” said coach Beeby. One of the strengths for the Bluejays this season is the offensive line. College prospect Justin Dutton (6-5, 300, Sr.) was named to the VYPE Top 100 and has several offers to play at the next level. Dutton will start at tackle while Bradley Hocker (5-11, 260, Jr.) and Seth Dean (6-0, 230, Sr.) have earned the starting jobs at guard. Calling the assignments is center Austin Gellenbeck (6-0, 220, Jr.). This group will wreak havoc on opposing defensive lines as fullback Cal Davis (5-11, 195, Sr.) and tailback Ty Doolin (5-8, 190, Sr.) look to reap the benefits of their labor. Last season Davis rushed for 243 yards on 40 carries with three touchdowns. Doolin, more known for his play at linebacker, could be the difference maker on offense this season.

CASHION Wildcats COACH: LYNN SHACKLEFORD ENROLLMENT: 153 Last 5 Years: 2011 - 6-6 2012 - 13-1 2013 - 10-3 2014 - 14-1 2015 - 12-3
OFFENSE Cashion has been the state runnerup each of the past two seasons. This season though the Wildcats are eager to win a title and claim that elusive gold ball. The man in charge of leading the Wildcats to the top of the mountain will be Matt Harman (6-2, 202, Sr.), the team’s starting quarterback. Calling Harman the starting quarterback is kind of like calling the Pope a priest though. In reality Harman is arguably the best quarterback in the state at any level and after throwing for 3,710 yards a year ago Harman has a legit shot to break the state’s all-time passing yardage record this year. Harman’s top targets this year in the passing game will be Seth Brown (60, 165, Jr.) at wide receiver and Case Cochran (5-11, 200, Jr.) at tight end. Running back Matt Farrow (5-9, 190, Sr.) will also be a target out of the backfield but will also give Cashion great balance in the rushing attack. Cashion will also have a very strong offensive line this year with center Jack Suntken (5-11, 200, Sr.) and guard Drew Baker (Jr.) paving the way. DEFENSE On defense the Wildcats will base out of a four or five-man front and be an aggressive pass rushing team.
Case Cochran Harman, Suntken and Farrow will likely all see time at linebacker this year. All three are versatile players however so don’t be shocked to see them lining up in multiple spots this year. Cochran meanwhile will be a starter at defensive end and Brown will start at cornerback. One of Cashion’s best defensive players this year will be Parker Payahsape (5-7, 175, Sr.) a linebacker who will punish you if you dare to run towards him. Payahsape is also a returning all-district player as are Suntken and Harman. and hurried the QB 10 times. Davis is another two-way player coach Beeby and will start at linebacker. The strong side backer notched 69 solo tackles, seven sacks and two fumble recoveries last season. Both Doolin and Davis will play major roles in the team’s success this season. Defensive end Brayden Stone (6-3, 219, Sr.) was extremely effective on the edge last year. His 43 tackles, 10 sacks and three batted balls are huge for this Bluejays defense. Christian Blassingame (6-0, 255, Sr.) will pull nose guard duty and look to repeat his performance from a season ago. As a junior Blassingame had 29 tackles, two sacks and five tackles for loss. Another player to watch is defensive back Zac Payne (5-9, 165, Sr.). Payne has a nose for the ball and the ability to recover to make plays on passes most DB’s would regret. In the 5-2 Okie scheme the Bluejays will run this season Payne’s play will be key to preventing the homerun plays many in the district like to throw. “Seven starters return on a defense that will be fast and aggressive,” said coach Beeby.
Nash Walker 2012 - 10-2 2013 - 7-4 2014 - 0-10 2015 - 7-5
OFFENSE Last season Crescent took some lumps early with a young team but then closed the regular season by winning four of its last five and then won a first round playoff game over Drumright before losing in the second round to Rejoice Christian. This year the Tigers will bring back seven starters from the 2015 offense and have a chance to put up points in bunches. At quarterback look for Nash Walker (5-9, 160, Sr.) to take the majority of the snaps after racking up 500 all-purpose yards and nine touchdowns a year ago. Receiver Danny Portwood (5-10, 160, Sr.) along with running back Dylan “Buzz” Emery (5-11, 205, Jr.) and fullback Jacob Musil (6-2, 205, Jr.) will all also be counted on to contribute in big ways this season. Last season the trio of Portwood, Emery and Musil combined for over 1,000 all-purpose yards and most fans in Crescent expect those numbers to go up this season. On the offensive line Matt Portwood (5-11, 210, Jr.) will be the straw
Justin Dutton
that stirs the drink for Crescent’s road graders that could average 230 pounds across the board.
DEFENSE On defense Crescent’s strength will be their play on the defensive line. In the middle of that group will be Jareth Black (5-9, 180, Sr.) while Matt Portwood and Hunter Bowers (6-1, 200, So.) will bookend the line at the defensive end spots. Last season Portwood recorded 85 tackles and 18 tackles for loss and Bowers chipped in 67 stops with 13 tackles for loss. At linebacker Emery is the guy to watch. In 2015 he led Crescent in tackles with 101 and also had four sacks and 11 tackles for loss to his credit. In the defensive backfield Walker will be a player to keep and eye on as will Chad Lile (5-8, 145, Sr.). In a district that contains a wide variety of offensive styles from Cashion’s spread attack to Morrison’s Wing-T the Crescent defense will need to be strong all over the field if the Tigers hope to be successful in 2016. OFFENSE The Wolverine offense will run through VYPE Top 100 player Cristian Gomez (5-9, 155, Sr.) in 2016. The dynamic quarterback ran for 1,171 yards and 27 touchdowns last season, all while throwing for 2,270 yards and 29 touchdowns. Gomez is aiming to have an even better season as a senior. Gomez will hand off to Dayne Fuxa (6-3, 180, Jr.), a talented running back who ran for 350 yards and four touchdowns last year. Tight end Dustin Nagel (6-0, 180, Sr.) will be a big target for Gomez. Mike Wade (6-3, 270, Sr.), Mason Monsees (6-0, 215, Sr.) and Trenton Blaser (6-1, 250, Jr.) make up a talented offensive line that will clear the way for Gomez and Co.
DEFENSE Five starters return to the Wolverine defense, including Gomez, Wade and Nagel. Gomez is an impact defensive back who secured 124 tackles last season. Wade is the nose guard who recorded 83 tackles and four sacks in 2015. Nagel recorded 81 tackles, three sacks and three fumble recoveries last season. Beau Gaines (6-0, 200, Jr.) had a monster season in 2015 and is looking to repeat that this season. Gaines recorded 142 tackles and 16 sacks from his defensive end spot. Jake Brown (6-1, 185, Sr.), the other Wolverine defensive end, had a great year himself, racking up 157 tackles. Expect this group to be more technically sound in 2016. year after spending the last several years in the Class B ranks. On offense look for either Cole Jones (6-0, 170, Jr.) or Derek Halcomb (6-0, 200, Sr.) to get the start at quarterback. Last season both took a good amount of snaps with Jones throwing for 1,292 yards and 13 touchdowns while Halcomb threw for 700 yards and eight touchdowns. Whichever player doesn’t line up under center will still find a spot in the offense, likely at running back. In 2015 Jones carried the ball 69 times for 533 yards and six scores. Halcomb added 233 yards and six touchdowns of his own on 51 carries. Zac Davis (5-10, 175, Jr.) will also see some time at tailback this year for the Panthers. In the passing game expect Jevan Overton (6-3, 190, Sr.) and Blake Rayner (6-3, 175, Sr.) to be the biggest targets. Overton will line up at tight end this year and Rayner is likely to also play some tight end as well but may also split wide at receiver. On the offensive line Jake Davis (511, 225, Jr.) will anchor things in the trenches for the Panthers.
DEFENSE On defense the Panthers will either run a 2-3 or 4-1 look depending on their opponent. Ethan Brown (5-11, 160, Jr.) will get the start at nose guard this year while Overton and Halcomb work behind him at linebacker. In the secondary Zac Davis should get the start at corner along with Brandon Gibson (6-0, 145, Jr.). Rayner meanwhile will start at safety giving the Panthers a very athletic defensive backfield. COACH: BRIAN SEVERIN ENROLLMENT: 75 LAST 5 YEARS: 2011 - 8-3 2012 - 3-7 2013 - 6-5 2014 - 3-7 2015 - 7-5
OFFENSE Only three starters return to Timberlake’s offense this season which means that the Tigers will have somewhat of a new identity this year. According to Timberlake head coach Brian Severin that means putting the ball in the air more than Timberlake teams have done in the past. Leading that passing attack will be
quarterback Joey Najera (5-11, 150, Jr.) a player who threw for 382 yards as a sophomore. Dylan Siler (5-10, 160, Sr.) will start at running back but will also be a primary target in the passing game. Last year Siler ran for 500 yards and had 236 yards receiving. On the offensive line expect Wyatt McCollum (5-11, 170, Sr.) to make his presence known at the guard spot.
DEFENSE Only two starters return to the Timberlake defense this season so they too will be hunting for their own identity just like the offense. Severin said that identity may have a lot to do with the Tigers overall team speed since they are faster than groups before them but not quite as big. McCollum will be starting at defensive end this season after recording 62 tackles in 2015. Siler will also start on defense playing cornerback. Last season Siler recorded 78 tackles. Running back Connor Nunley (5-11, 175, Sr.) missed time to injury in 2015, but still ran for 342 yards and four touchdowns. DEFENSE The Wildcat defense will need to stay healthy in 2016 in order for them to succeed. Linebacker Dalton
James (6-1, 170, Jr.) is the big name returning to this defense. On the offensive line DK Williams (61, 98, Sr.) will be a pillar of strength and protection. DEFENSE DK Williams will continue his leadership role on the defensive line, starting at defensive end. Kade Wheeler (5-9, 180, Jr.) will play opposite of Williams and could see some favorable matchups due to Williams getting so much attention. At linebacker David Demoret (510, 168, So.) and Braggs will be the go-to-guys in the middle of the field. On the back end of the defense Riley Williams and Matthew Buck (6-0, 125, So.) will both start at cornerback Sept. 1 – vs. Covington-Douglas Sept. 9 – at Kremlin-Hillsdale

COACH: BRYCE SCHANBACHER ENROLLMENT: 102 LAST 5 YEARS: 2011 - 8-3 2012 - 12-1 2013 - 12-0 2014 - 12-1 2015 - 11-1
OFFENSE Cherokee has had one of the most successful eight-man programs over the past 10 years, winning state titles in 2010 and 2013 along with a silver ball finish in 2015. Overall since 2009 the Chiefs are a whopping 76-12. That’s an average of 10.8 wins per year over that seven-year window. This year though Cherokee may be facing the toughest challenge of
continuing its dominance. Only one starter returns to the Chiefs’ offense this year after a huge crop of seniors graduated last year. Look for Jarrett James (5-8, 150, Sr.) to lead the team at quarterback this year. Matt Lancaster (6-0, 175, Sr.) and Davion Walls (5-8, 145, Sr.) will also be key players at running back this year. When James throws the ball Caleb Roberts (6-6, 230, Sr.) gives him the type of target every quarterback dreams of at tight end. Kelby Franks (6-0, 140, Jr.) will also be a threat on the outside at wide receiver. On the offensive line Garret Padilla (6-5, 305, Sr.) is a player capable of completing changing a game in the trenches. DEFENSE On defense it will be the Roberts and Padilla show at defensive end. Emris Leatherman (5-10, 260, Sr.) will play between the two athletic ends at nose guard. At linebacker the Chiefs will feature Lancaster and Kolten Gilley (6-1, 210, Jr.) this year while James will be the team’s leader in the secondary.

downhill style of running to the field but will also get plenty of carries this year. Matt Yunker (5-8, 150, Sr.) also saw time in the backfield last year and will once again factor heavily into the offensive scheme. The Cardinals also have two very talented tight ends that will make a major difference this year in Joe Jantzen (6-3, 185, Sr.) and Carter Bowen (6-0, 180, So.). DEFENSE On defense Yunker and Keller will both start at linebacker this season in Medford’s 4-2 front. Jantzen and Bowen meanwhile will bring good speed off of the edge at defensive end. Ogle will also play on defense this year as a defensive back.

OFFENSE With five offensive starters retuning this season the Medford Cardinals should be one of the more experienced team in the state. At running back Chandler Ogle (5-8, 160, Sr.) should give the Cardinals a good amount of speed out of the backfield. Fullback Braden Keller (5-10, 180, So.) brings a bit more

HENNESSEY EAGLES OFFENSE “Reports of my death are greatly exaggerated.” Mark Twain said that about himself but it also applies to Hennessey football. For the first time in a long time the Eagles didn’t claim a district title last year. That has some people around the state talking about the end of a Hennessey dynasty. Don’t believe those people. The Eagles bring back seven starters on offense this year and should once again compete for the district crown. In the trenches look for Brooks Leu (6-0, 225, Sr.) and Dalton Joyce (6-0, 230, So.) to lead the way at center and tackle. Leu has started since his sophomore year and consistently grades out very high. Joyce meanwhile started last year as a freshman and has gotten much bigger this offseason. Taking the snaps from Leu this year will be Zane Hugaboom (5-10, 160, So.) who threw for 1300 yards last year. Hugaboom’s chief targets on the outside this year will be Cale Blehm (5-9, 155, Sr.) and Ashton Rapp (5-10, 185, Sr.). Tight end Dayton Wymore (5-11, 185, Sr.) will also play
a major role in the pass game along with blocking for the run game.
DEFENSE Hennessey has always leaned on a strong defense and it will be the same this year even though the Eagles only return five starters to that side of the ball. Up front look for Leu to bring an unrivaled intensity to his spot at defensive end. With Leu drawing attention on the line Wymore will be the Eagles’ leader at linebacker where he totaled 93 tackles and three sacks last year. Aidan Craun (5-7, 175, So.) will also get the nod at a linebacker spot this year. In the defensive backfield Blehm will start at corner as will Jaylen Goff (5-8, 170, Sr.). Levi Childs (5-11, 170, So.) will also start in the secondary at the strong safety position.

HOLDER DRUG TEAM OF THE MONTH: ALVA GOLDBUGS OFFENSE Alva made big strides last year and made it to the playoffs by finishing fourth in their district. This season expect more big things from the Bugs as a bevy of players are back and ready for another season in head coach Taylor Schwerdtfeger’s system. Mitchell Meyer (6-0, 180, So.) is likely to take the majority of the snaps at quarterback after throwing for 850 yards and rushing for 240 more in 2015. Austin Shklar (5-11, 185, Sr.) could also get time at quarterback but will also play some running back as well. As a junior Shklar

ran for 400 yards and recorded 650 passing yards with eight total touchdowns. Other skill position players to watch this season are Haydon Colwell (6-0, 185, Sr.) and Davion Murrow (5-11, 175, Jr.). Both players can line up at either running back or receiver giving the Goldbugs great versatility. Last year Colwell ran for 1,100 yards and 13 touchdowns and added 400 yards receiving with two touchdowns. Murrow meanwhile added 510 yards rushing and 250 yards receiving. On the offensive line Trevor Allison (6-3, 265, Jr.) will be the team’s leader up front.
Chase Jones
DEFENSE On defense Shklar, Colwell and Murrow will all start in the Alva secondary. Colwell and Murrow will line up at cornerback with Shklar at strong safety. In 2015 Colwell had 24 tackles and here interceptions while Shklar recorded 44 tackles of his own. At linebacker Chase Jones (6-0, 200, Sr.) and Ethan Harzman (62, 220, Sr.) are two guys who will lay the wood to opposing ballcarriers. In 2015 Jones had 85 tackles, four tackles for loss and two sacks. Harzman was even more productive last year with 88 tackles, seven tackles for loss and three sacks. Harzman may occasionally line up as a rush end as well but for the most part that job will belong to Grant Ritter (6-6, 205, Sr.). Ritter had 38 tackles and two sacks as a junior and is a player you have to account for in your blocking scheme.

Choice Insurance Athlete of the Month Ally Riley
Ally Riley may be the best softball player you’ve never heard of. Riley is a power-hitting catcher for the Alva Ladybugs and one of the best players in not only Northwest Oklahoma, but Oklahoma in general. Her talent already drew the attention of multiple colleges, but for Riley one always stood out. Nebraska. “I’ve been a huge fan of Nebraska softball for the longest time and every time I step on campus, whether it was a camp or a football game, it always feels like home. There’s really no place

Great athleticism also runs in Riley’s family. Ally’s older sister Lora is currently a member of the NOCEnid Jets basketball team and will begin her sophomore season in 2016. Ally however said she may have the bragging rights to being the best athlete in the family now.
“My goals for my senior year are to be the best teammate and leader I possibly can, and to leave it all on the field with no regrets.”
“Of course it does! Actually, all jokes aside, my sister is one of my biggest
But before she can head to Lincoln, or watch her sister in action on the hardwood, Ally will be trying to make one more playoff push with her teammates in Alva. Riley’s goals for this season don’t include wins though.
For her talent on the diamond and her amazing leadership qualities, Ally Riley is the Alva Athlete of the Month.
How was your summer vacation? For Northwestern’s Willow Gahr, it was saving sea turtles in Costa Rica Summers in northwest Oklahoma are usually spent surrounded by an ocean of wheat. But for one Northwestern Oklahoma State University student, part of the summer was spent surrounded by a different kind of ocean...the Pacific Ocean. Willow Gahr, a senior and biology major from Carmen, spent 10 days at the end of her summer volunteering for a conservation project in Costa Rica to aid Green Sea turtles. Within a 10-mile radius on the beaches of Costa Rica, Gahr worked day and night to help check for nesting sites, document new nesting sites, ensure the turtles reach the ocean, collect data on sea turtles and more. “This is a rare opportunity that will help me with my degree as far as doing research in the classroom, doing independent stud-
ies and working with my professors,” Gahr said. Gahr is open to the whole experience and believes it will be more than just saving sea turtles. “Yes, I am going out to help sea turtles, and it’s a wonderful conservation project,” Gahr said. “But, I feel like the benefits I am taking home from this are worth more to me in the long run. “I will be able to work outside my comfort zone along with being able to grow on my leadership and communication skills. I will need those later in life for graduate school interviews and things like that that it will definitely come in handy. It will be an experience with new-found skills that will last a lifetime.” She said her experiences at Northwestern prepared her for this opportunity. “I feel like my education at Northwestern has helped prepare me greatly,” Gahr said. “We have done a lot of hands-on experience with animals in some of my classes. I have an idea already of how the
animals behave and how they live life in general…I am as prepared as I can be.” For more information on Northwestern’s Natural Science Department. contact Dr. Steven Maier, department chair and associate professor of physics, at (580) 327-8562 or sjmaier@nwosu.edu.

OFFENSE After finishing last year 10-2 the Geary Bison are ready to run through the rest of Class B this season and compete for a gold ball. The Bison return six starters to their offense this year and should be a very balanced group. Haden Glasgow (5-10, 180, Sr.) will start at quarterback again this season after passing for 1,200 yards, rushing for 500 and scoring 30 total touchdowns a year ago. Glasgow’s biggest target this year will be Kendell Johnson (5-11, 170, Jr.) who had 700 yards receiving a year ago. In the running game look for Ross Shawnee (5-10, 180, Sr.) to be the main man for the Bison. A swiss army knife of talent Shawnee can hurt you in the rushing attack, catch passes out of the backfield and burn you in the return game. Last season Shawnee had 1,700 total yards to his credit and scored 31 total touchdowns. DEFENSE Defensively Geary also has six starters back this year and should be an experienced group, especially up front in 28

their 3-2 scheme. On the line, Dallas Williams (5-11, 275, Sr.) is back after making 60 tackles and eight sacks a year ago. Dion Brown (5-10, 240, Sr.) will also start on the defensive line and is another key cog in the machine after making 50 tackles a year ago. At linebacker Andrew Peck (5-8, 160, Sr.) had 84 tackles a year ago and could possibly reach triple digits in that category this year. Ethan Allen (5-8, 160, Sr.) is another tackling machine at linebacker and had 79 stops to his credit as a junior

COACH: MARK COX ENROLLMENT: 92 Last 5 Years: 2011 - 6-5 2012 - 6-5 2013 - 10-2 2014 - 6-5 2015 - 2-8
OFFENSE Mark Cox takes over as the head coach at Okeene this year after spending the past several years on Rick Luetjen’s staff at Hennessey. Cox also brought Mike Jenkins and Mark Fuller onto his staff at Okeene. Both Jenkins and Fuller have previously coached at Okeene but didn’t last season. Under Cox, Okeene will run a Pro style offense that focuses on the run game and then builds the passing attack off of that. Overall Cox said he is looking forward to the 2016 season. “Okeene is a football town with a great tradition of success. After a rough season last year, we are excited about the opportunity we have this year to right the ship and get this program back to competing at a high level.”
DEFENSE Defensively Okeene will line up in a 4-4 front and bring a major physicality and toughness to a sound scheme. The Whippets have seven defensive starters returning this year so they should be a very experienced unit. Looking at their district opponents Okeene will need to be able to both step up and stop the run with teams like Thomas and Hooker on the schedule but will also need to be able to defend the pass against district foes like Fairview and Mooreland. OFFENSE Fairview may have taken some people by surprise last year by making the Class A playoffs but that won’t be the case this year. Eight starters return to the Fairview offense including the tip of the spear, quarterback, Kade Dillard (510, 165, So.). Last year Dillard threw for 1,818 yards and 14 touchdowns. In Fairview’s Spread attack, wide receivers Tommy French (5-8, 85, Sr.), Logan Quiring (5-11, 200, Sr.) and Chad McGolden (5-10, 155, So.) to all catch plenty of passes but also carry the ball in Fairview’s rushing attack.
Last season the trio combined for 25 catches but more importantly they also had 109 carries for 529 yards and six touchdowns. Nick Berlingeri (5-10, 195, Sr.) will be the teams starting running back and a very versatile threat coming out of the backfield. On the offensive line Matt Heinrichs (6-5, 220, Sr.) will be the unquestioned leader of a group of unsung heroes.
DEFENSE The Fairview defense will be almost just as experienced as the offense with seven returning starters. At inside linebacker French and Quiring made 91 and 61 tackles respectively last year and will be expected to do even more this year with Fairview hoping to take the next step. Berlingeri and Jake Smith (510, 175, Sr.) will be the team’s outside linebackers where they can use their speed to make a major impact. Meanwhile, Dillard will start at free safety and try to improve on his 69 tackles and four passes broken up from a year ago. On the defensive line Heinrichs will slide over and continue his leadership role taking on opposing blockers. OFFENSE After finishing 1-9 last season the Red Devils bring back an experienced roster hungry to right the ship and put Ringwood back on the path to being a title contender. Leading the parade of returners on offense is quarterback Jase Adkisson (6-0, 175, Jr.) and offensive lineman Jose Lucas (5-10, 305, Sr.) who will likely start at center this year. A powerrun, downhill style team look for guards Chris sanders (5-9, 235, Sr.) and Lane Mason (6-3, 230, Jr.) to also make a massive impact on the offensive line. Running behind Ringwood’s triple threat up front will be running back Zach Bromlow (5-8, 160, Sr.) and fullback Garrett Ools (5-11, 185, Sr.). DEFENSE On defense Ringwood will be utilizing a 3-3 stack look
this year with Bromlow and Ools leading the way at linebacker. Sanders and Mason meanwhile give Ringwood an athletic pass rush on the edge with Joshua Frable (5-9, 160, Jr.) also playing on the defensive line at times but also transitioning to linebacker depending on the formation. In the secondary Jon Mark Frable (5-8, 150, So.) is a player who will be counted on heavily this year as the Red Devils’ top cornerback.

OFFENSE In 2016, the Canton Tiger offense will aim to throw the football more. “Last year, we had to rely too heavily on the run and were unable to move the ball effectively,” coach David Smith said. The Tigers will run the two back system. Curado Bates (So.) made a lot of progress during his freshman season. Bates plays quarterback, but also takes snaps at running back as well. Jesse Grayson (So.) is dynamic with the ball in his hands. Grayson splits time at running back and
wide receiver. DEFENSE The Canton defense needs vast improvement in the tackling department, according to coach Smith. If they improve there, they have a chance to be a great defense. Tony Campos (Jr.) will play nose guard and defensive end in Smith’s 3-2 defense. Glen Walker (Sr.) will be an impact linebacker, and he looks to make his senior season one to remember. OFFENSE Seiling is a favorite to claim the Class B gold ball this season after a 10-2 record a year ago. That comes after a year where the Wildcats finished 10-2 and reached the Class B quarterfinals. Seiling will try to stay balanced this year but expect VYPE Top 100 selection Jaestin Nelson (5-10, 160, Sr.) to get a large number of carries at tailback. Last season Nelson ran for 2,600 yards and 33 touchdowns and could potentially crack 3,000 yards if things break right for the Wildcats. Quarterback Todd Sander (6-0, 150, Sr.) will also be a major weapon this year after passing for 1,400 yards a year ago. Sander’s top target this season will be Jonah White (5-11, 170, Sr.) who was credited with 665 yards receiving and 17 receiving touchdowns last year. Tight ends Kobey House (6-0, 170, Sr.) and Colby Thurber (6-3, 225, Sr.) should also pull in some passes this season. Finally, look for Caleb Haynie (5-9, 145, So.) to figure into the mix somewhere. A versatile athlete Haynie may line up under center at times playing quarterback or in the backfield as a tailback.
DEFENSE With seven starters coming back on defense Seiling may be stronger on this side of the ball than they are on offense and that’s saying something. White and Thurber will start on the defensive line this year at defensive end and defensive tackle respectively. 30 V Y P E O K . C O M | A U G U S T 2 0 1 6

OFFENSE Woodward makes the leap into Class 5A this season and will also usher in a new head coach in Craig Hixon. That may sound like the beginning of the recipe for a rough year but Hixon is a Woodward native and spent time on Darris Servis’ staff prior to taking the head job this offseason. Heading up the Woodward ground game will be quarterback Luke Vanderwork (5-11, 165, Sr.) and running back Jesus “Chewy” Fraire (5-10, 165, Sr.). Fraire led the Boomers in rushing last season and could be in for an explosive season this year in a runheavy offensive scheme. Logan Long (6-5, 240, Sr.) is a big athletic target in the passing game but will also be a crucial run blocker for the Boomers as well. Another guy who will do plenty up front is Cameron Vaverka (6-1, 225, Jr.) the team’s leader on the offensive line. DEFENSE Woodward also has a new face at defensive coordinator this year as Marcus Mead takes over in that spot. Mead is an Alva native who was a

standout for the Goldbugs then went on to play linebacker at Baylor University. Previously Mead was the special teams coach for the Boomers. In Mead’s 4-3 defense expect Long and Vaverka to wreak havoc from the defensive end positions. At linebacker Slayden Covalt (5-11, 220, Jr.) should be able to take advantage of the attention given to Woodward’s edge rushers and roam freely making tackles from sideline to sideline. In the back end Colton Cox (5-8, 150, Jr.) will start at strong safety and be the team’s leader in the secondary. “Defensively we will be more aggressive with a strong line and excellent linebackers,” coach Hixon said. “We have a very dedicated group of young men. Our strength will be in the trenches, but we also have multiple skill players that will be hard to stop. Senior leadership has been invaluable this spring.”

Quick Hits: Woodward features one of Class 5A’s top big play threats in Jesus Fraire. Kingfisher felt his presence after Fraire returned a pair of kickoffs and added two more rushing touchdowns in a 49-28 Boomers win to open Logan Long the 2015 season. The Boomers will keep Weatherford on the schedule after moving up to Class 5A. The series has been unbroken the past 12 years with the Eagles holding the 8-4 advantage. Weatherford won last year’s meeting 38-7.
Woodward’s offense hit the skids in the middle of the season. The Boomers averaged 36.8 points per game getting off to a 4-1 start and just 15.4 down the stretch in a five game losing streak.

OFFENSE Laverne brings back seven starters to its double-tight base offensive formation and will once again be a team who looks to impose their will starting with a dominant run game. Quarterback Trey Allen (Sr.) will be the trigger man in the Tigers’ offense this year and everything Laverne does will start with Allen’s play under center. Running backs Hunter Person (Sr.) and Dalton Sparks (Sr.) will also both get plenty of carries this season as they look to help Laverne back to the top of Class B. When the Tigers do put the ball in the air wide receiver Ihzan Castillo (Jr.) will be the top target on the outside.
DEFENSE Laverne will also bring back seven starters on defense this year giving them a veteran group on that side of the ball as well. On the defensive line Tracer Raven (Sr.) will anchor things in the trenches for the Tigers. Meanwhile Lane Fanning (Sr.) will be the team’s leader at linebacker. In a very tough district that contains teams like Shattuck, Seiling and Turpin Laverne will need to rely on its experience in order to contend for a playoff spot and set themselves up in good position to make a run at a gold ball. BUFFALO BISON COACH: DUSTY YAUK ENROLLMENT: 55 LAST 5 YEARS: 2011 - 4-5 2012 - 5-5 2013 - 4-6 2014 - 0-10 2015 - 0-9
OFFENSE The Bison bring back six offensive starters this year and will feature multiple formations to showcase their playmakers and exploit matchups with opposing defenses. The rudder of the Buffalo offense this year will be Brady Bowles (6-1, 220, Jr.), a returning all-district quarterback who accounted for 2700 yards of offense in 2015. Luis Villa (5-8, 150, Jr.) will be another pillar of the run game as the starting fullback. In the passing attack look for wide receiver Jakoby Carter (6-0, 140, Jr.) and tight end Hunter Barton (6-1, 230, Jr.) to be Bowles’ favorite targets. Controlling things at the line of scrimmage will be the job that falls to Austin Stewart (6-0, 250,
Sr.) and Max Shuman (6-1, 220, Jr.).
DEFENSE Working out of a 3-2 front the Bison will count on Villa and Thad Wilkinson (5-7, 145, So.) to play with passion and a high football IQ at linebacker. On the defensive line Stewart will be the team’s leader but fans can expect big things from Will Cleveland (510, 170, So.) and Parker Morgan (5-9, 215, Jr.) as well. In the secondary, safety Rollin Richard (5-9, 150, So.), is a name to get familiar with before. SHARON-MUTAL TROJANS COACH: RUSTIN DONALDSON ENROLLMENT: 71
LAST 5 YEARS: 2011 - 10-3 2012 - 11-2 2013 - 11-2 2014 - 4-6 2015 - 4-6
OFFENSE Although the Trojans will operate out of multiple formations this year the end result of most of them will be the same, a heavy dose of the run game with some play-action pass sprinkled in. The chief ball carrier this season will be running back John Custer (5-10, 195, Sr.). In his junior campaign Custer ran for 900 yards and eight touchdowns. John Roberts (5-10, 170, Jr.) will also likely get some carries and spell Custer at times this season. Opening up holes for the two backs will be an offensive line led by Nick Green (6-1, 285, Sr.) and Tucker Huffman (5-11, 240, Jr.). Tight ends Chase White (6-2, 185, Jr.) and Chris Thompson (5-10, 165, Jr.) will also be key in the run blocking scheme but also big targets in the passing attack. DEFENSE Custer will continue his
leadership role on the defensive side of the ball as a starting linebacker in the Trojans’ 3-2 scheme. In 2015 Custer recorded 95 tackles and could easily crack 100 stops this year. White will also start at linebacker this year and be another athletic presence in the middle of the field. On the defensive line fans will see Green lining up as the team’s nose guard this year with Huffman getting the start at defensive end. At cornerback the Trojans will feature Thompson and Roberts. *No Schedule Provided. Please send schedule to Oklahoma@ VYPE.com and check back at VYPEOK.com
MOORELAND BEARCATS
COACH: FRANK HOWARD ENROLLMENT: 131 Last 5 Years: 2011 - 1-9 2012 - 6-4 2013 - 6-4 2014 - 7-4 2015 - 12-1 OFFENSE
Coming off a 12-1 season in 2015 the Mooreland Bearcats bring back four offensive starters this season. At quarterback the Bearcats will either feature Brogan Sears (6-4, 185, Sr.) or Kaden Hensley (5-10, 140, So.). Last season Sears played receiver and caught 12 passes for 223 yards and two touchdowns while Hensley played running back and rushed for 240 yards and three touchdowns on 34 carries. Whichever player doesn’t win the quarterback job will get a starting job at their old position. Rowdy Mars (5-11, 190, Sr.) and Hunter Vaughan (5-11, 150, Jr.) are two other players likely to get a good amount of work out of the backfield this year as well. On the offensive line Mooreland will have a good amount of size and that all starts with Jakob Snider (6-0, 280, Sr.) and Taylor Handrahan (6-2, 300, Sr.). DEFENSE On defense the strength of the Bearcats’ 3-3-5 defense will be a nasty group of linebackers who can all bring the lumber. Denton Mars (6-0, 195, Sr.) had 48 tackles last season and will be
asked to up that production this year. Dakota Copenhaver (5-11, 180, Sr.) and Jared Schnoebelen (6-1, 185, So.) will round out Mooreland’s talented group of linebackers. In 2015 Copenhaver recorded 65 tackles and three sacks and Schnoebelen added 30 stops of his own. On the defensive line Garrett Harris (6-0, 190, So.) will be a player that is asked to step into a leadership role this season after being more of a role player as a freshman. In the defensive backfield Sears will be an athletic presence for the Bearcats. Last year he didn’t play a lot of defense but did record two interceptions. Woodward defensive back Colton Cox talks about life on the gridiron
VYPE: Let’s get this one out of the

Cox: I think this year our team has
a solid chance. We just moved up to Class 5A so it will be a challenge but our guys can handle it.

Cox: Jesus “Chewy” Fraire is the fastest guy on the tem. I’d have to say Donivan Rodgers easts the most, he’s the biggest guy on the team. And I’d have to have Kole Marlatt on a desert island with me. VYPE: What’s the team on your schedule you are looking forward to playing the most? Cox: I’m looking forward to playing Clinton. They are our first game of the
season and that game will really set the tone for our season.
VYPE: Would you rather pick off a pass and take it back for a touchdown or bust a long touchdown run on offense where you make multiple guys miss? Cox: Personally, I would rather get a pick and return it for a touchdown. VYPE: Tell me something about Woodward people may not know? Cox: Woodward loves football. Not many teams have the privileges we have. Playing football here at Woodward is a lot different than any other school. It’s really something special that you never forget. Boom Go The Girls Woodward outfielder Maison Moseley gives you an insider’s look at the Boomers’ program
yourself?
Moseley:
I’m extremely humbled and blessed to receive that compliment. I expect a lot out of myself and will continue to work hard to reach my goals.
VYPE: You guys were a great softball team last year but didn’t quite make the state tournament. How hungry is this team to take that next step? Moseley: With our success last year, the bar is set higher than ever before when it comes to our expectations for ourselves. The way last season ended was far from satisfying and we will do anything to avoid that disappointment again. We’ve been in the weight room and on the track all summer getting in shape to prepare for this season. The intensity of our practices is already higher than it ever was last year. We realize the work we have to do and we’re ready to rise to the occasion.
VYPE:
Last one. Not a question but If there is there anyone you would like to thank for helping you get to where you are today, feel free to do that here.
VYPE: What is the team on your schedule you are most looking forward to playing against this year? Moseley: Elk City, hands down. We’ve always had such a huge rivalry. VYPE:Three-part question. Last movie you paid money to see? Last song you downloaded? Last concert you attended?
VYPE: You have gotten a lot of praise
Moseley: The Secret Life of Pets; Tennessee Whiskey; Luke Bryan.
as one of the best outfielders in the entire state. What’s it like to hear that about
Moseley: If it wasn’t for my family, teammates and coaches I wouldn’t be where I am today. I’ve been so blessed with the support system God has placed in my life. For the full length Q&A with Maison please go to www.vypenwok.com

Fab Five: Five Must-See Football Games in Northwest Oklahoma This Year Sept. 2 – Ponca City at Enid – If you like rivalry games this is the one you need to see. These team’s HATE each other. Both teams will also matchup well against each other. Will Phillips and Colton Troxell give Enid some explosive playmakers while Austin Whitehead and John Carroll give the Plainsmen muscle in the trenches. Ponca will counter with playmakers like Darrel Arita and Trent Fry with Brant Scott giving the team plenty of beef on the line.
Sept. 30 – Hennessey at Chisholm – Last season this game decided the fate of the District 2A-1. This year it is likely to do the same thing. Chisholm won the 2015 version of this contest and you can bet players like Mason McKee and Connor Pasby hope to repeat that. Hennessey though is a tough, nasty, physical squad and seniors Brooks Leu and Dayton Wymore will be hungry to go out with a district title.
Case Cochran and Parker Payahsape to be aware of. Crescent has a dual-threat quarterback in Nash Walker and other impact players like Buzz Emery, Danny Portwood and Matt Portwood. Any way you slice it this game should be fun.
Oct. 28 – Shattuck at Seiling: If you like eight-man football then this is the one game you have to be at this season. Shattuck is coming off a Class C state title and moves into Class B this season. Seiling meanwhile is Sept. 16 – Alva at Fairview – Oct. 7 – Cashion at Crescent – a favorite to contend for a gold ball behind running back Jaestin Fairview is a team receiving a lot Another rivalry game, but this of hype in Class A. Meanwhile, one will likely have a district title Nelson. Shattuck has their own Alva is a team most believe will on the line. Cashion is the heavy playmaker in wide receiver Gatlin Goodson. OFFENSE The Eagles will be bringing back eight offensive starters this year in head coach Jonathan Keathly’s first season as the head man in Watonga. Chief among those returners is VYPE Top 100 selection Jack Lafferty (5-9, 180, Sr.) who will start at quarterback. Last season Lafferty threw for 978 yards but did the bulk of his damage with his legs, running for 2,022 yards. Overall Lafferty racked up 34 touchdowns in 2015 and could see an increase in those numbers this year. Kyler Mathis (6-1, 180, Sr.) and Nate Coffey (6-2, 190, Sr.) will be Lafferty’s top targets at receiver this season. Last season Mathis caught 22 passes for 420 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Jayden Flynn (5-9, 180, So.) will also be back this year after rushing for 655 yards and six touchdowns in 2015. On the offensive line Rolando Renteria (5-11, 215, Jr.) will start at center and be the leader that every great team needs in the trenches. DEFENSE Defensively the Eagles will operate out of a 4-2-5 under Keathly. Flynn will start at middle linebacker this season with Jacob Smith (5-10, 210, Sr.) also getting some time at a linebacker spot this year. Jalen Pierce (5-10, 210, Sr.) and Branson Gorman (6-5, 190, Sr.) will also play in the middle of the field at the outside linebacker positions. In the secondary Mathis will be the
OFFENSE When you play at certain schools across the state certain expectations come with putting on the uniform. One of those schools is Kingfisher. Last year however the Yellowjackets had one of their very rare down years, finishing 4-7 overall after a first round playoff loss to John Marshall. In 2016 though Kingfisher and head coach Jeff Myers have plans to get back to doing what they do best. “The kids are ready. They want to turn the page and get back to living up to those expectations. They know last year wasn’t acceptable,” Myers said. Cole Crosswhite (5-6, 165, So.) and Dakota Hart (5-9, 170, Sr.) are both back at running back but expect Jameson Hale (6-1, 180, Jr.) to also get plenty of looks in the backfield this year. Hale started at Elk City a year ago and be an added boost to the Kingfisher rushing attack in 2016. On the offensive line Braden French (5-11, 220, Sr.) and Tracy Smalley (6-2, 235, Sr.) to be the leaders. Rowdy Meeker and Thomas Eaton should also get a lot of work up front as well. In the passing game senior tight end Brand Franks and wide receiver Dason Townsend (6-2, 175, Sr.) will both be big targets. Throwing the ball to those receivers will be one of two players. Jett Sternberger is a dynamic sophomore athlete

THOMAS-FAY-CUSTER Terriers COACH: BOB WARD ENROLLMENT: 126 Last 5 Years: 2011 - 13-1 2012 - 11-1 2013 - 10-2 2014 - 15-0 2015 - 9-3
OFFENSE A year ago Thomas entered the year with hopes of defending their Class A title. A devastating injury to playmaker Hayden Herrera though severely hampered those dreams. Thomas still managed to finish the year 9-3 however and advance to the second round of the playoffs before losing to semifinalist Ringling. This season Thomas will return five starters to their offense and much like Thomas teams of the past the Terriers will center everything around a very talented offensive line. Braden Kester (6-3, 260, Jr.) will lead that group from his spot at left tackle. Chisholm Kliewer (6-0, 240, Jr.) gives the Terriers another people mover with great size and strength. As far as skill players go Trabor
and is competing with senior Trevor Buckner for the quarterback job. Both quarterbacks have looked good this offseason according to Myers and both have proven capable of leading the team.
Trevor Buckner
DEFENSE On the defensive side of the ball Townsend, Crosswhite and Hart will all get playing time in the secondary this season. Hale meanwhile will also play both sides of the ball lining up at linebacker. Also at linebacker look for junior Chase Foley to make plays from sideline to sideline. Last season Foley had 108 tackles to his credit to lead Kingfisher in that category. Up front Jacob Pace (5-11, 280, Sr.) will line up at nose guard for the Yellowjackets. “I think we will be better this year just because we return so many guys. I think our leadership and our overall attitude is better too,” Myers said. “I’m not saying it wasn’t good last year but I do think it’s even better this year.”
Mannering (6-1, 180, Jr.) is a jackof-all trades that could see time at quarterback or receiver. Last year Mannering had 14 catches for 201 yards and three touchdowns. Justin Howe (5-9, 150, Jr.) and Blake Moore (5-9, 130, Sr.) will also share the limelight at receiver this year. DEFENSE The Terriers defense will be built around a group of linebackers who fly to the football and make receivers think twice about coming over the middle. Chief among those linebackers is Nick Roof (6-0, 210, Jr.) who recorded 70 tackles last season. Howe and Jason Tharp (5-7, 140, Jr.) are two other linebackers that opposing offenses will need to be very acquainted with. Together Howe and Tharp combined for 70 tackles last season and will both be expected to improve their production in 2016. At defensive end Kester is a true menace to opposing lineman and ballcarriers alike. As a sophomore Kester piled up 37 stops and should see a significant spike in those numbers this year. Rounding out Thomas’ key defensive players is Mannering who will get the nod at cornerback. In 2015 Mannering had 27 tackles and three interceptions to his credit. Sept. 2 – at Alva Sept. 9 – at Hinton Sept. 16 – vs. Chisholm Sept. 23 – vs. Mooreland Sept. 30 – vs. Fairview Oct. 7 – at Hooker Oct. 14 – at Texhoma Oct. 20 – vs. Okeene Oct. 27 – OPEN Nov. 4 – at Beaver
SHATTUCK INDIANS
COACH: BLAKE LAMLE ENROLLMENT: 95
LAST 5 YEARS: 2011 - 12-1 2012 - 3-6 2013 - 10-2 2014 - 6-3 2015 - 12-1
OFFENSE Shattuck has dominated the Class C ranks for nearly a decade, winning six of the last 10 state titles in the class. This year though the Indians move up to Class B and will test their mettle in one of the toughest 8-man districts in the state. At running back look for Trenton Swenn (Sr.) and Jake Bay (Sr.) to both get a steady dose of carries. Wide receiver Gatlin Goodson (So.) may be one of the best young playmakers in the state and should be a difference maker this season. Tight end Riley Girton (Jr.) will also factor heavily into both the passing and rushing attack. As always great teams are made up front and that is where Preston Thomazin (So.) and Braylin Hill (So.) will come into the picture. DEFENSE On defense the Indians will count on the same players to make them successful as they will on offense. Thomazin, Girton and Bay will be the team’s starting defensive line this year. Hill meanwhile will start at linebacker while Swenn starts at corner. In a district containing powerhouses like Seiling and Laverne along with a strong Turpin team Shattuck will need to be strong on both sides of the ball if they hope to began another decade of dominance.
