Chisholm Girls Golf: A Top Five Finish at State for the Lady Longhorns Head coach Rhonda Robinett knew she had players that could step up and play well at the state tournament, including a freshman in Kaylee Peterson. Coach Robinett made the decision to go with one freshman and four seniors this year, who were all in the state tournament for the first time.
The field was loaded with talented golfers like Shelbie Black from Nowata and Addison Losornio from Claremore Christian, but it was the Lady Longhorn freshman that recorded a score of 159 for the twoday tournament, 13 strokes from the lead. Her score was good enough for an eighth place finish, giving the Lady Longhorns a real shot at a top 10 finish. “Being in the top five at the state tournament meant so much to our team. We started out not even placing in the first few tournaments. We worked with our coach, Rhonda Robinett, and with all of the hard work we ended up placing 4th. Finishing in the top ten was a goal of mine, but I couldn’t have done it without the help of my family and teammates. They encouraged me everyday to go practice, and helped me achieve my goal. Next season, Bailey Brown and I plan to finish in the top 10, and will be working hard over the summer to reach that goal,” said Peterson. Teammate Paige Holliday shot her way into an important finish in 29th place, which helped the team to their fourth place finish. Team members include Ashley Middleton, Kaylee Peterson, Bailey Brown, Carrisa Stalker, Hayley Morgan, Emma Chase, Megan Levendosky and Paige Holliday.

Enid Spring Sports Recap Enid seniors Alexis Blasi and Daniel Martinez earned All-State honors after outstanding state tournaments. Blasi teamed up with Gabrielle Dick to win No. 1 doubles while Martinez finished third at No. 1 boys singles. “The girls were very good,” head coach Darrell Herndon said. “We had three outstanding players and three that were in their first year of playing varsity tennis for the girls. “Daniel was the only member of the boys team to score any points. We saw very good progress from our No. 2 singles and both doubles teams in the boys. They were eliminated early Saturday but they made great steps from the previous year.” Herndon is retiring after 40 years as the program’s head coach. “I’ve been here 40 years and in that time the girls won five titles and boys won one,” said Herndon, who also was an assistant on the 1983 Enid state championship football team. “We have been runners-up numerous times. I’ve been lucky to be here with some very, very talented kids.” Asked if he would spend his free
Enid Tennis time playing tennis, Herndon said, “I’m going to go fishing. I just thought it was time to go.” Blasi and Gabrielle Dick teamed up at No. 1 doubles to win their 6A division and lead Enid to a fourth place finish in the state tournament at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center. The pair opened the tournament with straight set victories over Yukon, Bishop Kelley and Jenks. It wasn’t until the finals that Blasi-Dick suffered their first setback 3-6 against Bixby’s Lexi Lucas-Easton Parker. They battled back to take the next two sets 6-3, 6-3. Savannah Blasi finished sixth at No. 1 singles.

After winning regionals, Martinez was seeded fifth for the state tournament. He opened with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Edmond Memorial’s Craig Mays. Next came a 6-5, 6-3 win over fourth-seed Brad Gleason of Union. In Round 3, he dropped a straight set loss to top seed David Hager of Edmond North. He bounced back for a 6-0, 6-2 win over Ponca City’s Blake Langston for third place. “Coach Herndon has been a great mentor to me,” Martinez said. GIRLS SOCCER The Lady Pacers finished third in District 6A-4 with a 5-2 record and punching its ticket to the playoffs. The team set a new school record for victories with 10 and earned the school’s second post-season berth in program history. Seniors Alyssa McCarley, Brianna Burrow, Shelley Mueller, Audrey Merz, Sophie Holle, Sarah Blakley, Jessica Ramirez, Shelby Davenport, Brieanna Glaze and Grace Enmeier closed out their prep careers with the school’s first ever double-digit win season. Enid’s baseball team saw its season come to a close in the 6A regional tournament with a 7-1 loss to Jenks. The boys soccer team ended the season 7-6 and out of the playoff picture. Enid boys track team finished 23rd overall.

Daniel Martinez - Enid Tennis
Volunteering has always been a big part of Daniel Martinez’ life. Giving back to his community and school are tops on the Enid senior’s list. A 3.9 student, Martinez takes AP Calculus, AP Psychology in addition to concurrent classes in Composition I and II , and Government and Early American History. He plans to attend Southern Illinois in the fall on a tennis scholarship and major in physiology. At school, he is involved in the Freshman Connection, an organization of older kids who mentor freshmen. “it’s a lot of fun,” Martinez said. “It makes you feel like you are giving back to your school.” In addition, he is active in the local Soup Kitchen in Enid. “I volunteer there when it’s not tennis season. When I was 12, our church did it for community service hours. I really liked it and just kept going. I like to give back for all the things that God has given me. I know serving food isn’t going to make people’s day but at least it can put a smile on their face for a little bit and hopefully make them forget about their troubles.”

Hanna Dillingham – Enid High School
Hanna Dillingham is a junior at Enid High School where she’s a member of the varsity cheer squad and has cheered for Spirit Express since the third grade. “I’m going into my third year as a cheerleader at Enid High School, but I’ve been with Spirit
Express since the third grade, so about eight years,” Hanna said. Hanna is also involved with the Platinum E club at Enid. They are involved in community activities such as the Horn of Plenty and Toys for Tots. The Platinum E club also raises money each year for charity or for missions. As a member of Spirit Express Hanna has experienced what it’s like to be pushed and to become a better cheerleader and person. “One of the things that I love about Spirit Express is its such a fun and uplifting environment. Everyone is so encouraging and pushes you to be the best you can be. It’s like one big family.” Cheerleading has been a huge part of everyday life for Hanna and said cheerleading is one of the most rewarding things you can do. “It’s not
easy and it does take a lot of time, hard work, and trust in your coaches and teammates. But it is well worth it and you will make lifelong friends and memories.” After high school Hanna plans to attend college and possibly continue to cheering at the next level.

Longhorns and Lady Longhorns Both Finish Among Top Ten Teams at Class 3A State Meet
Austin Swann The Chisholm boys and girls track teams both placed sixth at the Class 3A state track meet in Moore last month. The boys team earned that honor by racking up 34 total team points while the girls finished with 37 total team points. The strong finishes at state followed up a regional tournament where both the Chisholm boys and girls won regional titles. On the girls side of things sophomore Falon Robinett led the way for the Lady Longhorns accounting for or helping to account for 28 of her team’s 37 total points. Robinett accomplished that feat by placing second in both the 1600 and 3200-meter run with times of 5:33.74 and 12:06.35. Robinett also ran on the Lady Longhorns 4x800-meter relay team, which
finished third at state with a time of 10:11.63. Other members of the 4x800 relay team were Kaci McCary, Megan Galusha and Logan Amsler. McCary also brought home two medals of her own placing fifth in the 1600 and sixth in the 800-meter runs. McCary ran the 1600 in 5:35.52 and finished the 800 with a time of 2:26.53. The rest of the Lady Longhorns points were earned in the pole vault where sophomore Brenli Brown placed fourth and senior Delaney Bartley placed fifth. Both Brown and Bartley cleared 9-00 but Brown earned the fourth place points on a tiebreaker. Also competing at the state meet for the Lady Longhorns but failing to place were freshman Lauren Richter and sophomore Kamille Gruber. Richter placed 13th in the shot put while Gruber
finished 16th in the long jump. For the boys team, junior Austin Swann was the biggest individual point earner after winning the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.44. Integris
Integris Stresses the Importance of Sports Physicals
Every high school athlete is required to receive a sports physical before competing in any sports for that year but most athletes don’t ever grasp why they are so important. Nancy Cooper, a physician’s assistant at Integris, has a story that every athlete should hear however illustrating just how important those physicals can be. Around three years ago Cooper was performing a sports physical on a junior high football player when she realized the player’s heart was racing. After finding out
some background on the athlete Cooper failed him on his physical and referred him to his regular doctor for a further examination. A few days later while watching practice from the sideline the player collapsed after his heart stopped. Luckily there was another Integris nurse at the practice who was able to perform CPR on the athlete and call 911. After the athlete made it to the hospital doctors were able to find out he had a mass on his heart and were able to operate and save his life. “Sometimes parents get mad because they think that we fail kids on physicals because we don’t want them to play. That’s not it at all though, if we fail a kid on their physical it’s because we feel like they need to get a further examination by their doctor before being cleared to play,” Cooper said. Despite her story about the athlete’s life that was saved Cooper said that most issues discovered
during sports physicals are minor issues like a player needing glasses or having asthma because they are having trouble breathing when they run. “Most kids are real healthy. If we find anything wrong it is normally pretty minor. But there is always a chance that we will find something more serious,” Cooper said. For athletes in Enid or the Enid area Integris offers sports physicals at any of their clinics or urgent care facilities according to Cooper, and athletes can also schedule an appointment with their regular doctor.

Mom of the
Month Kim Dennett – Pioneer Mom Kim Dennett, the mother of Pioneer Lady Mustangs softball player Paige Dennett, is the Enid Area Mom of the Month. Kim also has three other children, Ty, Cal and Lizzy who have attended or are currently attending Pioneer schools. When asked why her mom should be the Mom of the Month Paige elaborated on the selflessness that Kim shows when supporting her children. “My mom has five kids and no matter how busy or tired she is, she will find a way to make it to our games. She always will cheer us on to do our best whether it be sports, school or work,” Paige said. “She makes sure to help us if it’s at 5 p.m. or 1 a.m. in the morning. She shows us love and compassion, she is a nurse because of her love for kids. She takes care of kids all day then comes home to us still ready to help us out anyway we need.” Kim also is always willing to help out when any of her children’s sports teams ask according to Paige. “She isn’t in the booster club but if she is asked to help with any of the teams she will. She helps in the concession stand, keeping score, working the gate or helping with fundraisers,” Paige said.

Teacher of the Month Jessica Ransom – Enid High School
Jessica Ransom is a teacher who wears many hats at Enid High School. Ransom teaches Alegebra I, English II and Pre-AP English III at Enid along with being the Student
Council sponsor. Ransom, who just finished her fourth year teaching at Enid said that she truly enjoys the diversity at Enid and the thrill of watching her students grow as people. “I love what I do. I live for those ‘light bulb’ moments in my classroom. When a student truly understands a concept and really gets the concept makes me very happy,” Ransom said. “I feel sometimes that I am in the mission field with my students. Some of them come from so many different backgrounds and cultures, but I get to be the one who gets the opportunity to make a difference in their lives.” One activity that Ransom enjoys
doing with her students is a writing assignment that involves a jar and golf balls. The golf balls represent the most important things in the students’ lives, and the jar represents the students’ life. At the end of this assignment every year, Ransom said she leaves the kids with the statement; “No matter where you go, no matter what you do, you will always be a golf ball in my jar.” Ransom went on to say she loves her job and especially loves seeing her students progress through life. “I love my job! I love that I get to watch my ‘golf balls’ walk across the stage at graduation; some took the easy way and some took the hard way. Still, they made it, and I hope that I made a difference in their present and future,” Ransom said.

Spotlight Athlete: Sophie Hollie
Enid High School senior and AllVYPE selectee Sophie Holle is an outstanding soccer player and is currently in the Drafting Program at Autry Tech. VYPE caught up with Sophie before graduation to talk about her final year at Enid, her time at Autry Tech and what the future holds for the Lady Pacer. VYPE: Thanks for doing the interview Sophie. The Lady Pacers had quite the run this year. Holle: Yes. We made the playoffs for the first time in school history. Our center back Sarah Blakely is a senior and an outstanding player. We’ve played together since we were 10. She’s going to Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa and she made the All-State team this year. VYPE: I know you stayed busy this year, what are some other activities you were involved in at Enid High School? Holle: I only played soccer, but I’ve played Enid Pride for the last five years, I’ve been a part of the Oklahoma Football Club for four

and a half years, the Olympic Development Program for three years, and I’ve played recreational soccer for five years. All on top of playing high school soccer for four years. VYPE: Can you believe high school is finally over? Holle: It’s bittersweet. I can’t wait to leave Enid and start a new chapter, but Enid’s my home. Enid’s family. VYPE: You’ve spent time taking classes at Autry Tech. What has that experience been like for you? Holle: I started off wanting to do interior design, but then I learned the mechanical side and fell in love with the details to make something work as well as make it better. VYPE: Did Autry Tech help you figure out what it was you wanted to do after high school? Holle: Most definitely. Autry helped me figure out what I wanted to do with my life. Its given me every flavor of engineering and I would recommend it to other students if they were considering a place to go. VYPE: What do you enjoy doing in your free time? Holle: I enjoy playing soccer, drawing, hanging
out with friends and going to Bob’s Burgers. VYPE: Thanks Sophie and best of luck in the future. Holle: No problem. Thank you so much!

Britton Stacy, Dylan Tefft and Barry Bachman entered the field event with high expectations of placing and possibly putting someone in the top five. Britton Stacy did just that with a vault of 11-06.00, which was good enough for a fourth place finish. Tefft placed 9th with a height of 10-06.00, while Bachman finished 12th at the same height.

Goldbugs celebrate a successful season that left a bit to the imagination.
Riley Hess Scott Baugh took over as the Alva head baseball coach last year and promptly guided the Goldbugs to the Class 2A state tournament. This year the Goldbugs faced the challenge of moving up to the Class 3A ranks and were able to claim a district championship but couldn’t make it out of the regional tournament held at Heritage Hall ending their season with an overall record of 19-20. The season started off slow for Alva winning only two of their first 10 games, including going 1-3 in the Hector Tovar Tournament in Perry. The team bounced back however winning seven-straight games to improve their record to 9-8 overall. Mixed into their win streak were two wins over Seiling, two over Oklahoma Bible and one over Class 4A Woodward.
From there the Goldbugs stayed on a rollercoaster ride for the rest of the year and entered the district tournament against Newkirk with a 17-17 record. Alva lost the first game of the district tournament to the Tigers by a score of 10-2 and needed back-to-back wins to keep their season alive, claim a district title and advance to the regional tournament. The Goldbugs got those wins beating Newkirk 11-4 in game two of the tournament and 8-2 in the 30

Ty Hooper rubber match.
In the first game at the regional tournament the Goldbugs squared off with Jones and lost by a score of 8-4 bouncing them to the losers’ bracket where they would square off with Perry, a team who had just edged Alva by a score of 7-6 at the Hector Tovar Tournament. The two teams played another nip and tuck game at regionals but the outcome was the same with Perry coming out victorious, this time by a final score of 6-5. Just as they have for the better part of their high school careers seniors Riley Hess and Ty Hooper led the Goldbugs this year.
Hooper was the team’s top pitcher this year, starting at shortstop when he wasn’t on the mound. For his efforts this year Hooper was also named to the Northwest Region AllVYPE baseball team. Hess meanwhile was the team’s top outfielder covering a large swath of ground from his spot in centerfield.
Other key seniors who will be departing the Alva program are Lane Madsen, Cody Jones, Colin Fouts and Cade Pfleider, who was unable to play this year due to a knee injury he suffered during football.

Chesney Fouts – Alva Track Alva junior Chesney Fouts is the Alva Athlete of the Month. A member of the Ladybug track team Fouts finished in fourth place in the discus at the Class 3A state meet at Moore with a top throw of 112-10. The fourth place medal at state came one week after the junior finished third at the regional meet held at Chisholm High School with a throw of 101-07. A true gamer, Fouts saved her best finishes for the postseason. Fouts added a third place finish in the discus at the ‘89er Conference Meet in Watonga to her finishes at regionals and state. Prior to that Fouts had placed 5th at the Watonga meet and sixth at the Okeene meet earlier in the year. With her continued improvement throughout the spring, Fouts will clearly be an athlete to watch next year during her senior campaign.
Joby Allen - Alva Track
Alva senior Joby Allen is the Alva Athlete of the Month. A member of the Goldbugs track team Allen finished in seventh place in the discus at the Class 3A state meet at Moore with a top throw of 137-08. The seventh place finish at state came one week after Allen finished first at the regional meet held at Chisholm High School with a throw of 133-06.
Although Allen just missed out on a medal at the state competition the senior did put together an amazing season. Allen won the conference championship in the discus at the ‘89er Conference Meet in Watonga and earned second place finishes in the event at both the Okeene and Watonga meets early in the spring.

Buffalo High School baseball and softball teams featured players that not only contributed to their teams, but made the classroom a priority as well. Fellow Bison athlete Janeth Arredondo played basketball, softball and participated in track this year. The senior started playing softball when she was a freshman. “My favorite memory throughout high school was winning district in softball back in 2012,” said Arredondo. Like Madison Haack, Arredondo also attends classes at High Plains Tech with a focus on Health Career courses. “The reason I decided to be a part of High Plains Tech and their Health Careers program was to be able to learn more about the health field career I plan to work in as a career,” said Arredondo.
Madison Haack entered his first year of baseball after playing a season of football and basketball for the Bison. Haack is a member of First Christian Church Youth Council and was heavily involved in other activities at school. “I wanted to work hard this year and start figuring out what college I want to go to. My time at Buffalo High School has been great. My favorite memories are the practices and the games with all of my great teammates,” said Haack. Outside of school and sports Haack takes classes at High Plains Tech. “I wanted to
learn more about computers and get a better understanding of what IT involves. I decided it was a career path I wanted to take and High Plains Tech helped me with that,” said Haack.
When asked about his time at High Plains Tech Haack said, “I absolutely loved my experience at High Plains Tech and would recommend it to anyone. The students and instructors are both loving and caring and make you feel welcomed at all times. You never see any faculty member without a smile on their face.”
After high school Arredondo will enroll at Southwestern Oklahoma State University to pursue a degree in nursing and she credits High Plains Tech for preparing her for the next step. “I have had a blast at High Plains Tech. Not only did I have fun, but I also learned a lot. For any student that doesn’t know what field they are wanting to go into, High Plains tech would be a good place to figure it out. It was such an amazing experience,” said Arredondo.
Also pictured from Buffalo High School is junior softball player Anahi Ceniceros who, like Arredondo, in enrolled at High Plains tech where she takes courses in the Health Career Program. Ceniceros is a member of the softball team and is looking forward to playing her senior year, while taking courses at High Plains tech.

Paden Blevins Crescent High School How long have you been involved with FCA? Four years.
Who influenced you to join? My best friend Abby Stanton.
How has FCA made an impact in your life on and off the field? Meeting every Wednesday with all the other Christian athletes reminds me who I’m playing for, and being able to play with other Christian athletes we can keep each other on fire for God and to thank him everyday for being able to step out on the field.
How have your beliefs helped you as an athlete? Without Christ I could do nothing. Learning to put my faith and trust into God helped me to remember to put my faith and trust into my teammates. What is your favorite Bible verse and why? My favorite bible verse is James 1 verses 2-3. “My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.” Because no matter what trials I face on and off the field I know he’s getting me ready for a bigger and better opportunity. 34

Cherokee Boys Track Team Wins Title
Chiefs Win Class 1A; Lady Chiefs Bring Home Several Medals The Cherokee boys track team last won an overall team title in 2006. That title was the Chiefs third in a seven-year stretch. In the next seven years however the Chiefs wouldn’t claim a single title; the third longest title drought in program history since 1968. That drought ended on May 11 however when the Chiefs won the Class A championship with 87 total team points, crushing second place finisher Texhoma by 27 points. A big part of the team championship was the performance of the relay teams. Cherokee claimed gold in the 4x400 and 4x800 meter relays with times of 3:36.34 and 8:20.23 respectively. In the 4x100meter relay the Chiefs finished in third place with a time of 44.91 while in the 4x200-meter relay Cherokee finished fourth with a time of 1:34.66. The Chiefs added more points in the 800 with a sixth place finish by sophomore Avery Bagenstos. Senior Tanner Ducotey earned the team another eight points with a time of 11.17
