Kerr’s boys bounced back to reach the mountain top again.

Forgan State Champions In front of their fans, the Forgan Bulldogs walked out of the State Fair Arena as Class B state champions by defeating Lookeba-Sickles 77-69. The Bulldogs have now won three titles in the last four years. “This year’s team is a completely different group of kids,” Bulldogs coach Todd Kerr said. “These championships are all really special and different and they don’t stand out by themselves.” Before they claimed the state title, however, Kerr said the team was almost dealt a big blow. “On Thursday, Jace Kerr

Jace Kerr

sprained his ankle pretty bad,” Kerr said. “We weren’t sure if he was going to play Friday and Saturday. At one point, the trainer thought his ankle was broken, but an X-ray showed it wasn’t broken, so we were fortunate there.” Jace ended up putting up 23 points against the Panthers. For the Panthers, nothing was going to get in their way of winning the state title. Kerr said one of the best attributes his team has is how tough they are, so when Chandler Bryer got kneed in the nose and it wouldn’t stop bleeding, he wasn’t shocked. “My guys are tough top to bottom one,” Kerr said. “When Bryer’s nose was bleeding like crazy, I wasn’t shocked because I have a couple of bleeders,” Kerr said. Bryer didn’t let a nose bleed stop him from knocking down 15 points. “We had some guys that were battling through some stuff and they just had a mindset that they weren’t going to be denied,” Kerr said. Making their first-ever

Trevin Lopez state championship game appearance, the Panthers kept the game close. On the backs of Bryson Lierle and Connor Karpe, each scoring 22 points, the Panthers never trailed by more than 13. On their path to the state championship game, Forgan trounced Cave Springs 78-40 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Forgan was taken into overtime by Arnett, but were able to escape with a 66-61 win.

Alva, Okarche and PC-Hunter Strike Gold in OKC

Alva State Champions Lady Bugs Shock Class 3A Alva sophomore Jaden Hobbs put up a game-high 32 points to help the No.2 Lady Bugs beat No.1 Adair 49-40 in the Class 3A state championship. Adair entered halftime up 2018, but Hobbs was just getting started. Hobbs had a strong second half by helping her team out by scoring 23 of the team’s 31 points. Whitney Randall finished the night with 17 points for Alva. In a record-setting season, Hobbs amassed 107 points in three tournament wins, most in 5-on-5 girls basketball. The

record was originally set in 2004 by Howe’s Stephanie McGhee, whom scored 98 points that year. Hobbs put on show during this year’s tournament. In the quarterfinals matchup against Verdigris, Hobbs scored 30 points and finished with 45 points against Washington in the semifinals. “The records are nice to have, but my focus is never on a record. I only want my team to win! I’m lucky to have great teammates that play defense and hit big shots in big games. I would not have those records if it weren’t for them. They mean the world to me,” Hobbs said. “We play together and win together!” Okarche Defeats Red Oak for Sixth State Title In a new class and with six championships under their belt, the top-ranked Okarche Lady Warriors proved they were a force to be reckoned with. Okarche’s Morgan Vogt led all scorers with 23 points in the 66-41 victory over the Red Oak Lady Eagles in the Class B championship game.

Morgan Vogt The Eagles were up 9-4 early in the first quarter, but their lead didn’t last long. The Warriors exploded in the second quarter, outscoring the Eagles 22-3 and headed into halftime with a 35-16 lead. By the end of the third, the Warriors had extended to a 51-31 lead. The Warriors never looked back. Okarche’s Madi Grellner finished the night with 19 points.

Kenadey Grellner

PC-Hunter State Champions Madi Grellner Eagles sophomore Rainey Mauzey led her team with 14 points and seven rebounds. On the road to their second straight title, the top-ranked Okarche Warriors were nothing short of spectacular. In their quarterfinals matchup, the Warriors faced the Burlington Elks, whom were in their first state tournament since 1997. The No.7 Elks committed 22 turnovers in the 74-46 loss. On the back of Vogt’s 30 points, the Warriors extended their lead to as many as 34 points in the fourth quarter. Burlington’s sophomore Sarah Gravie finished the night with 20 points.

Rylie Halcomb

In the semifinals, the Warriors defeated Class B defending champion Erick 52-41. The Warrior’s defense dominated, holding Erick to just two points in the first quarter. Vogt finished with 24 points, and Grellner ended with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Besides winning the Class A title last season and adding the Class B title to their resume, the Warriors became the first team in 32 years to switch classes and win titles in back-to-back years. Lady Panthers With Unforgettable Finish The No.3 Pond Creek-Hunter Lady Panthers claimed their first Class A state championship by defeating No.7 Seiling Wildcats, 32-30 at the State Fair Arena. Panthers senior Rylie Halcomb finished the night with 13 points and three rebounds, but she helped solidify the win with a crucial rebound. “When I grabbed the rebound, in my head I was just thinking this is it and I knew I had to go shoot free throws,” Halcomb said. With 0.9 seconds left in the game, Seiling’s Kylie Templin put up a shot, but it was denied by the rim. Halcomb came up with the ball and was fouled. After missing her free throw and with 0.2 seconds left, Seiling was unable to turn anything.

“My first thought was to grab Jade. I couldn’t process that everything we worked for that year finally paid off and I knew we were going to win. I was so excited I couldn’t even handle it. There are no words for how it feels to be on that court when the buzzer goes off knowing you’re the winning team. I’m so lucky I got to experience that,” Halcomb said. Senior Jade Jones, who was averaging nearly 26 points per game, was 4 of 13 and nabbed only eight points. Jones scored 30 points in the game against then-No.1 Cheyenne/Reydon in the previous week. On their way to the state championship, the Panthers defeated Caddo 59-30 in the quarterfinals and forced 10 turnovers to knockout No.1 Cheyenne/Reydon 48-35 in the semifinals.

Enid Soccer: Plainsmen, Pacers Both Look Strong on the Pitch

Mason Camp shootout. After the dramatic win Owasso went on to reach the state semifinals and was just one goal away from competing for a state championship. That type of a loss can either demolish a team or build it up higher than ever, and for the Plainsmen it has been the latter. Led by senior goalkeeper Victor Hernandez, senior forward Armando Gutierrez and senior defender Justin Miles the Plainsmen reeled off three wins to open the year, all in shutout fashion. Those three wins have propelled the Plainsmen to a No. 12 ranking in the state. “As a group the boys’ attitudes and efforts so far have been up to the highest standard. Many of our returners this year are well versed in doing things right and they will continue to keep playing the quality brand of soccer that we buy into fully,” Enid head coach Craig Liddell said. “This solid group of returners

Sarah Blakley have been good leaders for those stepping into the squad. They are hungry to succeed both on and off the pitch.” Outside of the three seniors, the Plainsmen will rely heavily on

junior midfielder and forward Felix Mora and sophomore midfielder Pedro Braga. On the girls side of things the Pacers are coming off a season in which they missed out on the state playoffs. Determined to put last season behind them the Pacers have won each of their first three games outscoring their opponents 10-2 and are ranked No. 8 in 6A. The Pacers are led by a group of four seniors who play key roles for either the Pacers’ offense or defense. Sarah Blakley and Audrey Merz both bring senior leadership to their spots as the team’s defenders while Shelley Mueller and Sophie Holle are both crucial in the Enid offense at the central midfielder and forward spots. Junior Abigail Resendiz will also be a key figure for the Pacers at her midfield position. Liddell also praised the girls team for their talent and attitudes. “The girls have a wonderful group returning to the squad this year. Another good freshman class coupled with so many talented returners who have shown good attitudes and strong leadership has made it a very fun group to be a part of,” Liddell said. OBA Track on Pace Head coach Alan Ford returns several state placers in multiple events, but the team returns the attitude and passion for more. In his second year at Oklahoma Bible Academy head coach Alan Ford won regional’s and placed third at the Class 2A state meet. Entering year three, coach Ford is focused on technique and building confidence for a change in the landscape at OBA. “This year we move up to Class 3A. We are looking to compete for the state title again this year,” Ford said. Despite the bump in classifications, coach Ford is confident he has the talent to compete in Class 3A. Senior leadership is important on every high school team and the Trojans have plenty starting with Blaine Whitson. Whitson won the

gold in the 1600 and 3200 meters and won silver in the 4X800. And all of the 4X800 runners return this season. Merritt Suenram is a member of that returning relay team, but was also an important part of the 4X400, which won silver last year. Suenram is expected to qualify for the 400 and possibly the 1600.

Chris Walker is the third member of the 4X800 relay team and joined Suenram in the 4X400 relay team last year. Walker won the gold in the 400 meters and qualified to run the 200.

Between them the trio give the Trojans the potential to bring home a lot of hardware. Junior Jonny Volpe was the final member of the 4X800 and part of the 4X400 team. Volpe placed sixth in the 800 last year and qualified for the 4X200 giving coach Ford

another option when considering the makeup of each relay team.

Manny Walker is another relay specialist with 4X400 credentials.

In the field events look for pole vaulter Bryce Mendenhall and Dean White in the high jump. Both are sophomores with tremendous potential. They return to the team as state qualifiers and could find a spot on the podium for coach Ford.

Enid Q&A

Q&A with Plainsmen Baseball Player Kros Bay

Kros Bay is a freshman catcher at Enid High School and has already come on strong making an impact both behind the plate defensively and at the plate with a bat in his hands. Bay’s efforts on the diamond have helped the Plainsmen win six of their first 13 games this year including a 2-3 record in district play as of March 31. VYPE Editor Kyle Kendrick sat down with the freshman phenom to chat all things baseball.

VYPE: What are your goals for yourself and your team this season? Bay: Our team goals for this year is to improve every game and make it to the state tournament, my individual goal is to work hard, improve as a player, and help my team reach their goals. VYPE: Who is your favorite team to 18

play against and why?

Bay: My favorite team to play against is Ponca city because they are our rivals. VYPE: Who is the guy on the team who keeps everyone loose in the dugout?

Bay: The guy that keeps everyone loose in the dugout is Elliott Holden. VYPE: Would you rather hit a walk-off home run or make a great defensive play to win the game?

Bay: Being a catcher it would have to be making the defensive play. VYPE: What’s the funniest thing you have ever seen or heard on the field? (Keep it PG though) Bay: The funniest thing that I have seen is when our left fielder caught

a pretty well hit ball and the kid that hit it didn’t think he caught it and he kept running and slid into third and when he came up he was really embarrassed. VYPE: What artist is playing on your iPod the most right now? Bay: Hank Williams Jr.

Integris Online Wait Times Make Access Easier The busy life of a high school athlete leaves little time for getting sick, let alone waiting inside a busy urgent care clinic. That’s why INTEGRIS has taken a step to hopefully make the process a little easier. INTEGRIS Bass Baptist Health Center has just launched an online program enabling patients to check the waiting time to be seen at all three of its Enid urgent care clinics. Patients simply go to the website and they will immediately see how long it will take to be seen by a care provider. Times are updated by staff at the three facilities each hour and are estimated based on the number of patients registered. “It’s another way to enhance access to health care for our patients by offering them more convenience,” said Anita Luetkemeyer, Director of Public Relations at INTEGRIS Bass Baptist. To check current wait times, visit the website at integrisok.com/ enidurgentcare.

Enid Tennis Teams Bring Back a Stable of State Qualifiers

Plainsmen and Pacers Both Have Quality Returners Hoping to Lead Enid to Gold The Enid Plainsmen and Pacers both have a bevy of returning players with state tournament experience. What makes that experience even better is that all of that experience has been in high state tournament finishes. Leading the pack of boys is senior Daniel Martinez. As a freshman Martinez was fifth at No. 1 singles. In his sophomore campaign Martinez improved that to a third place finish. Unfortunately a leg injury kept Martinez out his junior season but this year Martinez is ready to compete for a state title according to Enid head coach Darrell Herdon. “He should be in the top three boys in Class 6A this year and he has beaten the other two at times. If he has a good season he has a great chance of being a state champion,” Herdon said. Other key contributors for the boys team will be senior Zachery Gwin and junior Connor Angleton. As 28

a sophomore Gwin played No. 1 doubles then as a junior he moved to No. 1 singles after the injury to Martinez. This season Gwin is likely to play either No. 2 singles or No. 1 doubles according to Herdon. Angleton meanwhile played No. 2 singles as a freshman then No. 1 doubles as a sophomore and will play No. 1 or No. 2 doubles this year. On the girls side of things the Pacers have three players back from last year’s team which finished third in 6A. Headlining that group will be Senior Alexis Blasi and junior Gabrielle Dick. Last year Blasi placed sixth at No. 1 singles while Dick was second at No. 2 singles. Dick and Blasi will most likely pair together this year at No. 1 doubles but could also play some singles throughout the year as well. “My goal for this year is for myself and Lexi to win a state title,” Dick

said. Sophomore Savanna Blasi will be another player the Pacers rely heavily on this year. Last season Blasi finished third at No. 2 doubles and this year will most likely be back at no. 2 doubles this year but could play some No. 2 singles as well.

Teacher of the Month Jennifer Patterson – Enid High School Teacher

Enid High School teacher Jennifer Patterson is the Enid Teacher of the Month. Patterson works and teaches students with learning disabilities and ELL students. Patterson will also work with students in other classrooms as well if those students need some extra help with their schoolwork.

Along with all of her teaching duties Patterson also coaches the middle school pom and cheer teams. Patterson has been teaching and coaching at Enid for 18 years after coming to the school district right after she graduated from Oklahoma Baptist University. When asked about what the best part of teaching and coaching in Enid, Patterson said it all comes back to the people she is surrounded by. “The students and parents have been amazing. I’ve been greatly blessed with being able to develop

some life-long relationships because of my job,” Patterson said. It is also because of the people that Patterson has been around that she chose to work with learning disabled students in the first place. “I had a friend in high school who had a learning disability and I was intrigued watching him learn,” Patterson said. When she isn’t teaching or coaching Patterson enjoys spending time with her husband and two daughters. “I have two girls ages five and eight and I enjoy watching them dance, tumble and play sports. We also love attending OU athletic events,” Patterson said.

Spotlight Athlete: Lee Olmstead and Autry Tech is a great place to start. The hands-on experience is the best part of being at Autry Tech. VYPE: Would you recommend other students attend classes at Autry Tech? Olmstead: Yes, I would recommend people check it out. They have helped me so much.

Lee Olmstead is a varsity baseball player at Kremlin-Hillsdale for head coach Terry Fettke. Off to a great start this season, VYPE caught up with the slugger to talk baseball, life outside of school and Autry Tech. VYPE: Lee, you play three sports at Kremlin-Hill sdale. What is the toughest thing about being a three-sport athlete? Olmstead: The toughest thing about playing three sports is not having any free time to do other things. VYPE: The team is off to a great start this year. What positions do you play? Olmstead: I play several positions and I pitch. I can play catcher or third base when I’m not on the mound. VYPE: Let’s talk about school. 30

Kinzie, Mulhall-Orlando Baseball Growing Together

Could a fall baseball season of all away games pay dividends this spring for Mulhall-Orlando?

That’s the hope for first-year head coach Kirk Kinzie.

“Playing away helps build character,” Kinzie said. “We were having a new stadium built. We’re playing home games now. The fall went really good and we’re off to a good start in the spring season.

“I brought in some new concepts from what the guys have had in the past and they have responded really well. We’ve been together since July. The chemistry has been really good through the process.” Senior first baseman Tracy Eisensmith is one of the captains and leaders on the team, said the coach. “He’s an excellent glove at first base,” Kinzie said. “He hits in the heart of the lineup.”

Sam Schwartz, a junior shortstop, will also spend some time at third base and bats three in the lineup. “He’s our main shortstop,” Kinzie said. “He is a tone setter as well. He has a smooth glove.” 32

pitcher. The southpaw pitcher and hitter possesses excellent speed, Kinzie said.

“Thomas has outstanding speed,” Kinzie said. “He’s already at like 20 stolen bases. No one has been able to throw him out yet. He sets the tone for us all. Thomas probably has a little more velocity on the mound. Thomas and Sam also are captains. Sophomore Joseph Pfeiffer has been tabbed as the team’s No. 1 starter.

“He’s a right-hander, a workhorse,” Kinzie said. “He has a rubber arm. He’s basically an innings eater for us. He’s really good at spotting up and limiting walks and his pitch count. He averages a strikeout per inning.”

Kinzie said the team brings a blue collar work ethic.

Nutrition Tips for Athletes

Deirdre Postier

One of the ingredients in healthy athletes that can sometimes be overlooked is proper diet. Educating athletes – as well as the general population – is but one part of the job for registered dietitian Deirdre Postier at St. Mary’s in Enid. In addition, she works with cardiac rehab patients on nutrition counseling.

A graduate of Oklahoma State, Postier is a member of the national and state Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. “I really do like the variety in my job,” said Postier.

VYPE sat down with Postier to discuss nutrition tips for athletes – both healthy or injured. VYPE: What are some of the best foods for athletes and why?

Postier: Basically, a good variety of food from all food groups. They provide all the nutrients that a person needs, whether you are an athlete or not. Athletes need a little more protein than a normal person because they have a lot of wear and tear on their muscles, breaking them down and building them back up. So they need a little extra protein compared to a person sitting on the sofa.

pumpkin, papaya, cantaloupe, winter squash.

Zinc – Important in wound healing and immunity. Food sources include: whole grains, seeds, almonds, beef, seafood.

Calcium/Vitamin D – For calcium to be absorbed vitamin D must also be present, Postier said. Food sources include: lowfat dairy products, fortified foods such as cereal, tofu, leafy greens, cold water fish and eggs. Omega 3 Fatty Acids – These have been shown to help decrease inflammation, Postier said. Food sources include: walnuts, soy foods, soy nuts, tofu, cold water fish (Salmon, sardines, tuna).

VYPE: Are there certain foods you would steer Mothers towards, particularly those with younger to middle school age children?

Postier: I would steer them toward dairy products for a snack or even drinking milk for a meal, maybe have yogurt on hand for snacks because it is so necessary to have calcium and vitamin D in the preteen and even younger years for proper bone development. VYPE: How important is it to maintain calorie counts?

Postier: Many people think a kid needs a lot of calories and because they are so active they can eat anything they want. So they decide to give them candy bars, cookies and things like that. It is better to start teaching good eating habits early and encourage kids to learn to make good food choices so that it carries on throughout their lives.

I see a lot of people in the hospital who have bad eating habits and a lot of times they become too set in their ways to change. I would encourage having fruits and vegetables on hand for snacks. VYPE: Do some foods help athletes recover from injury?

Postier: The goal is to eat well to promote the healing. Protein, vitamin C, vitamin A, zinc, calcium, vitamin D and omega three fatty acids. You want to find these in foods not in supplement forms you take orally. The number one thing any dietitian encourages is to get nutrition through foods.

Postier offers a look at foods and the healthy ingredients that help promote healthy athletes: Protein – Greek yogurt, eggs, cooked dry beans, peanut butter, fish, lean meats.

“Protein is necessary for healing,” Postier said. “We need protein at every meal or perhaps cheese with an apple for a snack. Protein helps to heal open wounds.” Vitamin C – Aids in the tissue repair and wound healing. Food sources include: citrus fruits, strawberries, tomatoes, peppers (jalapeno, bell), kiwi, melons. 36

Vitamin A – Helps develop cell growth. Food sources include: Dark orange or yellow vegetables such as sweet potatoes, carrots, VYPEOK.COM

Gomez could be the team’s 5-bag this season, depending on how some of the sophomores play. “This could be the 14th year in a row for the Mooreland Bearcats to make it to the state tournament. Four state champion teams and a runner-up in our team’s history. No state team for Mooreland has ever placed below 7th at state,” Kellner said. Also look for Jessika Hensley, Taylor Ham and Tierra Kahoe to contribute this season.

Three members of the Lady Bearcats golf team are students at High Plains Tech. Rylie Eller and Jesika Snider are students in Health Careers program, while Gaime Gomez is part of the Marketing program. “I’m very interested in the medical field. The idea of helping others is such a great feeling. The best thing about High Plains Tech is the hands on learning experience,” Snider said.
