Never Too Early For Football

Jasetin Nelson Fans all over this state know that it’s never too soon to talk football. Here are a few points to remember 1. Mark Cox takes over as the head coach at Okeene – Mark Cox has been an assistant at Hennessey for a long time and has been the offensive coordinator for the Eagles in each of the last four years. Now he moves just 26 minutes down Highway 51 to lead the Whippets. He will be Okeene’s third coach in the last three years. 2. Matt Harman has a great chance to break Oklahoma’s all-time passing record this year – Last year Mason Fine and Keats Calhoon broke L.T. Pfaff’s long standing record and Fine is now the current record holder. He may not be for long though. If he stays healthy and puts up the same type of numbers he has in his first three years of high school Cashion quarterback Matt Harman could easily be the new state record holder at the end of the year. He is currently 3,790 yards away but with the right luck and success Harman could get there. He’s thrown for over 3,200 4

|

APRIL 2016

yards in each of the last two years so it’s not that big of a stretch. 3. Three names to get to know – Fans in Northwest Oklahoma need to know the following names: Ross Shawnee, Jaestin Nelson and Darian Goins. Nelson plays at Seiling and nearly cracked 3,000 yards rushing last year so you can understand why his name is a big one to know. Shawnee meanwhile plays at Geary and ran for around 1,500 yards last year and Goins cemented himself as the starting quarterback at Enid with solid numbers while splitting snaps. No doubt these three are players to get to know. NWOK WEBSITE AND POLL RESULTS For those that don’t know VYPE has launched brand new regional websites. ON THE TOPIC OF TASHA DIESSELHORST BEING HIRED AS THE NWOSU WOMEN’S BASKETBALL COACH @dgoodno - this hire reminds a lot of the Stephanie Shaw hire in 2011. Successful college player in the league NW was in, who turned coach. Look how that worked out. Diesselhorst can be very successful at Northwestern Oklahoma State being that she knows the area and probably has some understanding how this program works. Northwestern also needs this hire to work out because the last two coaches brought in have been flops. If she can keep the better players in the area to stick around, she and that program will be successful. It’s just a very tough place to recruit too and I know that one first hand.

SPRING has Sprung Jay Hoberecht - Sports Director Williams Broadcasting KGWA and KOFM With the outstanding late winter and spring weather we have enjoyed in northwest Oklahoma, spring sports have been able to get outside and begin practicing sooner than later. Here is a quick look at some things to keep your eyes on this spring. Better yet, get out and enjoy some high school sports and support your favorite team. ENID HIGH SCHOOL The Enid High tennis program, the most decorated sport at Enid High School, is under second year head coach Carl Gaebler. The Pacers, the Class 6A State Runner-ups last year, will have senior Savannah Blasi playing with sophomore Grace Dillingham at No. 1 doubles. Junior Abby Gwinn will play No. 1 singles and Mia Gulart No. 2 singles. Elizabeth Dillingham and Avery Player will play No. 2 doubles. A young Plainsmen team will be led by junior Ryan Leap at No. 1 singles. Look for the Pacers to compete for a state championship. The Enid High baseball team under new head coach Brad Gore will need to bring some younger players along and find some offense to go along with a pitching staff that will have senior Johnny Chavez as their ace but without senior lefthander Tanner Lingenfelter who hurt his shoulder. Lingenfelter is still in the lineup however and starting in the Enid outfield. The Enid High soccer programs could be really good under new head coach Matthew 8

Loafman. Coach Craig Liddell left for Northwestern Oklahoma State University but left the program in great shape and both teams could make the playoffs. Plainsmen football coach Steve Hayes is looking forward to spring practices in May. Younger players who are getting bigger and stronger make the outlook good for the Plainsmen. CHISHOLM HIGH SCHOOL The Longhorns are excited about returning the Class 3A State Tennis Doubles Champions in doubles partners, seniors Tyler Harmon and Jack Snodgrass. They finished runner up as sophomores and champions last year. Can they repeat? The Longhorns finished second in the state in Class 3A Track. The boys have good returners and the girls have three good hurdlers and the two-mile champion in senior Falon Robinett. The Chisholm Longhorn baseball team, under Cody Tutwiller, looks to go deep in the playoffs this year with good experience and speed returning. The Longhorn golf program looks for Kaylee Petersen and Brock Elmore to qualify and play well in the Class 3A State Golf Tournament. Petersen tied for sixth last year at State. PIONEER HIGH SCHOOL The Mustang baseball team, under head coach David Riesen, has been to the last two Class A State Baseball Championships and five of the last six championships. Pioneer, 40-2 last year, graduated seven

players. Don’t count the Mustangs out with players like Kade Kronkhite, Stephen Rich, J.D. Valtr and Chris FawFaw returning. Good pitching, solid defense and timely hitting is the formula that gets Pioneer deep in the playoffs every year. The Pioneer girl’s golf team placed fourth last year at the Class 2A State Golf Tournament. Coach Norton has solid returning players like Andi Simunek and Bailey Koontz returning. Both of those girls have signed at Southwest Christian to play basketball and golf. Add in players like Kyla Stone, Zoey Lagan, Emily Anderson and Katelyn Stone and you have team looking to compete for a state championship. OKLAHOMA BIBLE ACADEMY The OBA Trojans track program has Defending Class 3A high jumper Dean White returning. Senior Baylor Boyd, a three time AllConference player, will anchor the baseball team at shortstop and be the closer. The OBA tennis program will have solid doubles teams in Elizabeth Price and Savannah Price plus Molly Cannon and Bethany Schafer. Senior Logan Orr will look to return to the state tennis tournament. It will be a great spring watching all the athletes competing. It is the busiest time of the year. The real fun is seeing who comes out of nowhere and wins a team or individual state championship!

r o f d e s Primcces Su Kerker Kickstarting Her Career at Autry

Enid Pacers soccer player Tristan Kerker excelling in the Medical Assisting program Enid fans may know Tristan Kerker as a soccer player for the Pacers. A senior leader for Enid, Kerker plays outside defense and currently has her team on pace to make the playoffs. Kerker doesn’t play any other sports at Enid saying that “soccer has her heart.” Soccer is a sport that requires a lot of dedication, especially in the offseason and Kerker said for her that means a lot of workouts. “During the offseason we put in about 1-2 hours a day,” Kerker said when asked how much time she spends working out to stay in shape during the offseason. That dedication also spills over to how long most players have played the sport and for Kerker it’s no different. The Enid senior has been playing the game she loves for roughly 12 years, a major portion of her life. At Autry, Tristan shows that same dedication to her work in the Medical Assisting program. Autry defines the Medical Assisting program as preparing individuals to enter the health care industry as competent health care providers. Students learn all the basics to be a successful medical assistant. Training includes patient care techniques, specialty exam preparation, medication administration, venipuncture, medical billing and more. The course prepares students to assist with laboratory testing and 10

office surgeries. Kerker has been enrolled in the program at Autry for two years and says she plans on using the skills she has learned in her career. “Oh most definitely! I will be using the skills I’ve learned in the classroom every day in the actual field,” Kerker said. Asked why she chose Autry, Kerker had a simple answer. “I knew I wanted to go into the medical field, so I said to myself why not get a head start? And I haven’t looked back since.” DID YOU KNOW • Kerker said her favorite opponent to play is Ponca City because of the rivalry. • If she could go anywhere in the world for vacation Kerker said she would like to go to Germany so she could see where her ancestors came from. • Kerker said she has a lot of people she would like to thank. That list starts with her parents for everything they do and continues with all her teachers that have dealt with her soccer schedule and all the coaches that have dedicated themselves to her and her teammates.

Rachael Shewey – Chisholm High School Finally, on April 1 Shewey and the Lady Longhorns traveled to Cherokee for the Cherokee meet and Shewey took home first place honors in both hurdling events. Her efforts at the meet were good enough to help the Lady Longhorns to a first place team finish, beating second place finisher Watonga by over 100 points. For her efforts on the track this spring Rachael Shewey is the Enid Area Female Athlete of the Month.

An excellent hurdler, Rachael Shewey has fans of Chisholm track excited about this season and what it could hold for the Lady Longhorns. Last year Chisholm took home fourth place as a team and have even bigger goals for this year. With Shewey and plenty of other talented athletes those goals are very attainable. Shewey sat out last season after transferring to the school but this year is making a major name for herself. At the Marlow meet in early March, Shewey won the 300-meter hurdles and took second in the 100-meter hurdles event. Later on in March at the Stroud meet Shewey pulled off the same feat and took home gold in the 300 hurdles and silver in the 100 hurdles.

VYPE's Northern Oklahoma College Spotlight: Tristan Black (TJ)

He’s a switch hitter who’s got an unshakeable presence at the plate and quickness to read every play. Tristan (TJ) Black, Northern Oklahoma College Enid’s key second baseman, gains the respect of his team while his quiet demeanor intimidates his opponents. “You can tell just by the way he carries himself off the field that he will do great things on the field. He doesn’t say much but commands the respect of his teammates,” Raydon Leaton, head baseball coach, said. A short prayer and a nod from his father gives him the concentration he needs to prepare his mind and quiet his nerves. “I get totally locked in before the game, and I try not to talk to other people to help me focus on the upcoming game,” Black said. Before signing for Northern, the Stillwater High School graduate was known by recruiters for an interesting attribute. “The baseball team decided to grow our hair out my sophomore year. Everyone knew me by my hair, which honestly helped coaches to remember me,” Black said. His ability to predict where the batter is going to hit the ball from what pitch is being throw is what makes him a desirable second baseman. “TJ is an above average fielder 14

with great hands and range. I’ve always seen him at second base and I think he will leave here as one of the best second baseman we have had since the start of our program,” Leaton said. As the season is underway, the team looks ahead to the collegiate

World Series. “We always prepare to make a run at the World Series and have the expectation to get there,” Leaton said. After college, Black would like to become a chiropractor.

Teacher of the Month

Anna Arterberry – Pioneer High School job and has a wonderful rapport with all of her students,” Betchan said.

Arterberry began her teaching career at Pioneer this year after graduating from Oklahoma State University in May of 2015. A native of Perry Oklahoma, Arterberry still lives in Perry and makes the drive to Pioneer everyday to teach. Currently Arterberry teaches English at the seventh grade, ninth grade and 11th grade levels. Arterberry said she became interested in teaching because of a family member she admired.

“I had always looked up to my aunt, who was a teacher and administrator, and saw the impact that she had on so many kids. So as I grew older, and saw how many kids didn’t have anybody in their corner, I knew I wanted to spend my life showing kids their potential,” Arterberry said. When asked what she hopes her students walk away with after having her as a teacher Arterberry echoed that sentiment. Anytime you are in your first year of doing a job things can be difficult. Challenges arise, it’s just natural. That’s why it is that much more impressive that Pioneer-Pleasant Vale principal Tom Betchan nominated first-year teacher Anna Arterberry to be the Enid Area Teacher of the Month.

“Mrs. Arterberry is a first year teacher, but does an amazing

“I hope that each of my kids leave class knowing that with hard work and perseverance they can succeed in anything, however, success is nothing without humility and kindness,” Arterberry said.

For her amazing effort to lead her students and be a person anyone can look up to Anna Arterberry is the Enid Area Teacher of the Month.

A Tradition Rooted in Success

Cherokee Track has a history everyone should be familiar with The Cherokee Chiefs boys track program is one of the most decorated in the state. Overall the team has 10 state championships. That number is bested only by Idabel, who has 17 overall titles. Cherokee has also finished as the state runner-up six different times.

The first five state titles the program won cam under the leadership of longtime coach Buddy Murrell. After finishing as state runner-ups in 1967, Murrell won his first state championship in 1968 leading Cherokee to the Class C state title. The Chiefs won with 45 team points, beating out Marietta who finished with 40 and Weleetka who finished with 31. Murrell then went on to lead Cherokee to state titles in 1971, 1972, 1973 and 1982. The three-peat of titles from 71-73 came in Class A with Wetumka coming in second in ‘71 and Thomas finishing in second in both ‘72 and ‘73. Murrell’s last title came in 1982

when he led Cherokee to the Class B title, just edging out Medford. Murrell also led the Chiefs to a Class B runner-up finish in 1984 coming in just behind Pernell and just ahead of Deer Creek-Lamont.

After the Murrell era ended the Steve Hickman era began. Hickman, the current head coach of the Chiefs, led Cherokee to a runner-up finish in 1997 when the Chiefs tied with Covington-Douglas with 54 total team points. Hydro won the Class B title that year with 73 total points. Just three years later though Hickman earned his first title when he led the Chiefs to the Class B crown and 109 team points, crushing second place Boise City by over 30 points. Hickman won another Class B title in 2002 when Obie Herron led the Chiefs with a dominant performance in the discus. It was Herron’s third state title in the event and at the state tournament Herron set the state meet record with a throw of 167 feet. The Chiefs next championship came in 2006 when Hickman pushed all the right

buttons on the way to the Class A crown. The Chiefs battled a tough Maysville squad that year, scoring 68 team points to the Warriors’ 63. The difference that year came in the 4x400 meter relay which Cherokee won, earning 20 points and Maysville didn’t place. Finally, Hickman has led Cherokee to each of the last two Class A titles with the 2014 team winning by a wide margin and last season’s team edging Turpin by eight points. All of the tradition and winning was made even more special when coach Murrell and coach Hickman were both honored when Cherokee opened their new track facility this year for the Buddy Murrell Invitational. Cherokee earned 121 points at the meet and finished in second place with only 3A Chisholm able to best the Chiefs. With finishes like that it’s easy to envision Cherokee winning yet another state title this year and add to their already rich history.

FFA doesn’t become official until a student’s freshman year of high school but there is a clear path to follow for kids interested in everything that FFA has to offer. Williams is on that path in Cherokee. For Williams that path involves the 4-H club where he already is serving as the Normally VYPE recognizes Vice President. Williams also plays football and runs track at Cherokee proving that he is a wellrounded student-athlete. 2016 Shelter Insurance Mr. and Miss Basketball Awards An incredibly talented group started out the season as the VYPE Top 50 girls in the state. Seiling, Lomega, Fairview All Claim Gold Wildcats, Raiders and Yellowjackets assert Northwest Oklahoma’s hardwood dominance

title in their respective class. The other loss came to a very strong Chisholm team by a score of 44-42.

It’s not really hard to make the statement that the best girls basketball in the state is played in Northwest Oklahoma. In Class B, Lomega dominated the competition and won a title. Equally dominant this year was the Seiling and the Lady Cats claimed Class A gold this year. Finally, in 2A, and a little more surprising than the others, was Fairview.

In the first round at state Fairview squared off against Preston and won easily by a score of 47-29. Then in the semifinals Fairview took on Dale, the odds on favorite to win the title prior to the tournament. The Lady Yellowjackets had other plans though and Barton came out with an excellent gameplan that his team executed perfectly. By slowing the game down and not allowing Dale to get out in transition, Fairview was able to play to its strengths and eventually won the game 31-29.

FAIRVIEW Under the expert leadership of head coach Mike Barton the Fairview Lady Yellowjackets battled a tough schedule this year and entered the state tournament with a very solid 23-4 record. As it turns out three of those defeats had come at the hands of Alva (twice) and Lomega, who also both won a state

wire-to-wire as the No. 1 ranked team in Class B and finished with a 31-1 overall record after winning the gold ball for the second straight year. The one team to beat the Lady Raiders was Class A power Okarche. That loss came in Lomega’s third game of the year; and after that Lomega won 29-straight games all the way to the title. Once they got to the state tournament Lomega took on a fellow NWOK school in Leedey in the first round. Lomega would prove too much for the Lady Bison, winning the game by a score of 70-59. In

In the championship game the Lady Yellowjackets won the title by again slowing things down and playing to their strengths. This time it was Cashion who was grinded to a halt with Fairview’s unrelenting defense and Flex Offense. In the end Fairview took the gold ball with a 2420 victory. the semifinal game the Lady Raiders battled the team they beat in the finals in 2015, Coyle. The game was a close one and came down to the wire but Lomega managed to hold on and win 44-42. In the finals Lomega took on another tradition-rich school in Red Oak. The Lady Eagles came in seeming like a team of destiny after winning close games over both Burlington and Erick. In the game against Lomega that destiny would be altered though, the Lady Raiders blitzed Red Oak early and won going away 66-43.

record with its only losses coming to Class 6A power Choctaw in the Tournament of Champions and Class 2A champion Fairview. Overall, 19 of Seiling’s wins came against teams who were ranked at the time the Lady cats played them if you include postseason play.

In the state tournament Seiling blasted Turner in the first round and won in blowout fashion 74-40. Moving into the semifinals Seiling again won big by knocking out Cinderella story Calumet 68-39. In the finals Seiling kept the blowout train going with a Weeks Farms 53-29 win over Pond1/2CPN Creek-Hunter. Boomers' Wagon Rolls to Class 5A Title Woodward’s girls basketball team capped off its fantastic season, amazing three days at the state tournament with a gold ball Coming into the state tournament all the talk surrounding the

Class 5A girls division was about all the usual suspects. Teams like East Central and Shawnee were the favorites. Not many of the so called experts were even talking about the Woodward Boomers let alone picking them to win the title. What those experts didn’t know however was that Woodward came to the Mabee Center on a mission. The Boomers rolled into Tulsa not thinking about how happy they were to be at state but feeling as if it would be a disappointment not to win. Woodward senior and eventual state tournament MVP Hillary Hurst said that coming in the team knew that the only people that needed to believe in the Boomers shot to win was the team itself. “We knew from the beginning the

only people we needed to think we would win was ourselves, and that’s exactly what we did,” Hurst said. That confidence stemmed from a 12-game win streak that Woodward rode into the state tournament. The streak began after a 55-53 loss to eventual Class 4A state champ Newcastle in the first round of the Newcastle Tournament. After that Woodward beat eight ranked

opponents in the span of a little over a month including Class 3A state champ Alva, Class 4A semifinalist Broken Bow and Class 4A state qualifier Elgin. In the first round at state Woodward squared off with Skiatook and their star player Mikayla Shulanberger. Woodward dispatched Shulanberger and Skiatook fairly easily knocking out the Bulldogs with a 56-41 victory. In the semifinals Woodward ran into many experts pick to click, the East Central Lady Cardinals. Woodward was again just too much to handle with the Boomers walking away with a 57-51 victory to advance to the semifinals. Finally, in the championship game Woodward took on the Claremore Lady Zebras. Through three quarters Claremore built themselves a 34-30 lead, but with the game hanging in the balance, Hurst, who is committed to play at ORU next year, took over. In the fourth quarter 30

and overtime Hurst went 13-of-16 from the free throw line. It was her basket with 34 seconds to go in the fourth that eventually forced the extra period and in the end finished with 31 points carrying Woodward to a 50-41 win. When asked what it was like to cap off her high school career with a gold ball Hurst said it literally was what dreams are made of. “It was a dream come true. There is not any better feeling because we literally started from the bottom my freshman year and because of our hard work and heart we ended up on top at the end,” Hurst said. I cannot think of a better way to end my career.” Overall Hurst scored 93 total points in her three games at state, good for fourth all-time in 5-on-5 state tournament history. Fittingly the player that previously held the fourth place spot and now occupies fifth was Woodward head coach Kinzie Didier. Didier, then known as Kinzie Glover, was a star at Fairview and

then later Newkirk where she once scored 44 in a state tournament game back in 2005. Along with Hurst being named tournament MVP the Daily Oklahoman also named Woodward point guard Devre Newby to their alltournament team. Newby said ending her senior season with a championship was surreal. “Being able to win my last basketball game in a Woodward

uniform and getting the gold ball was a dream come true. It’s a feeling unlike anything else…I can’t even find the words to describe it,” Newby said. “I wouldn’t have wanted my basketball career to end with any other team or in any other way. I’m just so thankful that the seven seniors on this team got to finish the way we all wanted to.” This is Woodward’s ninth girls basketball state championship but first since 2004.

Woodward Academic Athlete of the Month

This past fall Kade Marlatt starred as the Woodward Boomers quarterback and strong safety. Now this spring Marlatt is again making noise, this time as a star utility player on the Woodward baseball team. In four years Marlatt has played just about every position on the field and said he is willing to play anywhere his coach needs him but that centerfield, shortstop and second base are his main positions. Through 16 games this spring Marlatt helped Woodward go 6-10, including a five game win streak between March 24 and March 28.

Marlatt is also a standout in the classroom, carrying a 4.0 grade point average. When asked what his favorite class was Marlatt said it would be tough to choose but if he had to pick he would choose History/Government. He was quick to point out however that English is his least favorite. After high school Kade plans to continue his education and his baseball career at Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa. For his efforts as an athlete but also his efforts as a student, Kade Marlatt is the Woodward Academic Athlete of the Month.

Money.

A LITTLE BIT MORE 1. Kade says that being from Woodward there is always a little extra competitiveness playing against Elk City, no matter what sport. So the Elks are his favorite team to play against. 2. When asked what his favorite memory was of playing sports at Woodward Kade couldn’t choose just one. “There has been too many great memories on and off the field in my four years to pick just one. I wouldn’t trade them for the world,” Marlatt said.

Jorge Crespo: A Name to Know Woodward athlete excels on the soccer field and in the classroom Soccer doesn’t always get the most attention so if you aren’t a Woodward Boomers soccer fan you may have never heard the name Jorge Crespo. It’s one you should get to know however. On the pitch Crespo is a striker, and counted on to put the ball in the net anytime he can. That’s something Crespo and his team do very well, in March Woodward went 5-1 and averaged five goals per match. Crespo should be good at what he does on the soccer field; he puts in plenty of work to make sure of it. “I spend most of my time on the soccer field, when I’m not at school or work. Even after practices I’ll go on my own time and get a couple more sprints in just to make sure when the season rolls around I won’t get too tired during games,” Crespo said. Away from soccer Crespo is a standout student and currently enrolled in the Marketing program at High Plains Technology Center. Crespo says he has

always been interested in Marketing and when he found out High Plains had a Marketing program he made sure to enroll in it. Crespo has been in the program for about a year now and says he definitely plans to use the skills he is learning at High Plains in his career. Crespo says that after high school he plans on focusing in on his education and future career.

MORE ABOUT JORGE • Jorge said if he could go anywhere in the world on vacation he would choose Australia just to see all the cool animals that are there.

“I’ve never really thought about playing sports in college. I will probably just concentrate on my schoolwork,” Crespo said.

• Jorge has been playing soccer since he was about seven years old.

No matter what Crespo chooses to do in the future the work ethic he shows on the soccer field and at High Plains Tech will almost certainly make him a success in everything he does.

• Jorge said he would like to give a shoutout to his girlfriend Emilly Giacomo. Who goes to all his soccer games and definitely has to be his number one fan.

A live arm on the mound Hopkins racked up 32.2 innings pitched in the team’s first 14 games of the season and had 37 strikeouts in that time. Anytime Hopkins is on the hill he gives Kingfisher a chance to win. Mason Overstreet – Overstreet is a great all-around athlete and was just named to the All-VYPE Northwest Oklahoma basketball team for his efforts on the hardwood this winter. It’s on the golf course though where Overstreet really excels. Last season he was the

overall champion at the Class 3A state tournament and shot a 135. That was six strokes better than second place finisher Cooper Little of Plainview. With another year of experience under his belt you can bet that Overstreet will be back near the top of the leaderboard at state this year. Rayna Patton – Only a sophomore Patton is already making headlines as a talented track and field athlete. Throwing the shot put and discus Patton placed in both events at the Kingfisher meet, taking first place in the discus and second in the shot put. At the Woodward meet Patton also placed in both events by taking second in the discus and third in the shot. With the way things are headed so far expect Patton to be a mainstay among the

top throwers in the state for multiple years to come. Madeline Loosen – Another “Diaper Dandy” for the Lady Yellowjackets; Loosen is only a freshman but is already making big headlines. At the Woodward meet Loosen placed second in the 1600-meter run with a time of 6:17 and then won the 3200-meter run with a time of 13:24. At the Kingfisher meet Loosen again showed well by taking second in both the 1600 and 3200. Nothing is guaranteed but Loosen is already showing the potential to be an athlete that takes home multiple pieces of hardware at the next several state meets.
