High School Sports “ROCK THE CASBAH” Here is the thing about high school sports. Just when you think you have it figured out, the impossible becomes possible. Let me be more specific. Douglass hands unbeaten and #1 ranked Wagoner their only loss of the season in the 4A state title game. Hennessey played in a lower class (A) the previous year and moves up a class (2A), then dashes the state title hopes of the D-1 talent-laden and previously unbeaten Millwood Falcons. Then on top of all that, there is the Jenks vs. Union head scratcher. This has been a football season where you really feel like you have things mapped out, but then they play the game. If you can’t get excited about the way things wrapped up in high school football, you need to find your nearest emergency room, because you may have no pulse. Here is what it all means in a more of a long-term scenario. This basketball season will be one for the ages. With Douglass being ranked nationally and just coming off a state football title, you can bet the basketball pep rallies at NW 10th and MLK will be full of

spirit. The Millwood team that just lost the heartbreaker to Hennessey, well a good portion of those athletes are headed for the hardcourt, and by the way, they return most of their talent from last year’s state championship team. And finally, the 6A basketball on this side of the state will be off the charts. As always, Putnam City will have their say, but there is an immense amount of talent brewing in Edmond, Mid-Del, and Norman. VYPE.COM

Dec. 1st, 1951 University of Mississippi fullback Arnold Boykin had the game of his life today against Mississippi State University. Boykin rushed for all seven of the Rebels touchdowns and led Mississippi to a 49-7 win over their in-state rivals.
Dec. 4th, 1971 Oklahoma running back Greg Pruitt rushed for 189-yards as the Sooners rolled past rival Oklahoma State University, 58-14. The rushing total for the day gave Pruitt 1,665-yards on 178 attempts, which gave him an average per carry of 9.35-yards. That mark set a new NCAA record.
Dec. 4th, 1987 Boston Celtic legend Larry Bird finally missed a free throw after hitting 59 in a row. Bird, in a game against the Detroit Pistons, missed number 60, and the Celtics lost the game, 128-105. The mark of 59 straight free throws was only the fourth longest streak in NBA history.
Dec. 10th, 1971 New York Mets pitcher Nolan Ryan was traded to the California Angels for infielder Jim Fregosi. Ryan would go on to a Hall of Fame career and recently became the owner of the Texas Rangers who went to the World Series for the first time in franchise history. Ryan also pitched for the Rangers where he recorded his 5,000th strikeout against Oakland A’s outfielder Ricky Henderson.

CHOCOLATE MILK
he world of recovery drinks and sports drinks is an extremely competitive market. Some sports drinks promise a quick recovery while others seem to suggest that by drinking their formula you’ll become a better athlete. What if the best recovery drink was always right in front of you, you just didn’t realize it? Well there’s a new player stepping up to the front of the line. Chocolate milk. Yep, the favorite drink of elementary school kids everywhere.
Chocolate milk is gradually becoming the choice of many trainers at the college and high school level. Take the University of Tulsa for example. Head Athletic Trainer David Polanski implemented chocolate milk a couple of years ago and has seen the results. “Based on recent research chocolate milk has been shown to help athletes refuel exhausted muscles after exercise. Therefore we decided to make chocolate milk available for our athletes as a recovery drink. Chocolate milk possesses a great mix of carbohydrates, protein, and vitamins. After athletes work out, everything they need in recovery can be obtained with chocolate milk. Plus, economically it is much more efficient and for our athletes who are working out away from campus, chocolate milk is very easy to find at any convenient or grocery store.” Why chocolate milk? Compared to water and sports drinks, it has double the carbohydrate and protein content, which is perfect for replenishing tired muscles. Chocolate milk is high in water content, which replaces fluids lost as sweat helping prevent dehydration. It packs a nutritional bonus of calcium and includes just a little sodium and sugar, which are additives that help recovering athletes retain water and regain energy. So should you stop drinking water? Of course not. Chocolate milk is not a replacement for good old-fashioned water. And it’s not for every athlete. This is really for the full-time athlete. Weekend warriors will not see much of a benefit from replacing sports drinks with chocolate milk, however those athletes in high school and college are seeing the benefits. These types of athletes need to replace carbohydrates, proteins and calories to maintain a certain level of performance.
Some would say milk after a workout sounds terrible, but we’re talking about chocolate milk. Think of it as a supplemental shake. Granted you can’t get it in orange or blueberry flavor…yet.

Oklahoma Football Takes A Back Seat to No One Studies show that Oklahoma D-1 football prospects rank high across the country. We make our case.
aking pride in our great state is something that comes naturally to Oklahomans, especially during football season. We’ve all been there, and we are all pulling the same rope. You know what I am talking about. All those conversations with friends and relatives who live in Texas and other area. We always seem to find ourselves defending the quality of football we play here in the Sooner State. Here are the two arguments that you need to make. An Oklahoman’s guide to making a claim about high school football in the Sooner State.
1. Football Players coming out of Oklahoma high school ranks.
When it comes to the elite football teams in Oklahoma (And this is an actual case where we can all be proud of the Union-Jenks programs), Oklahoma takes a backseat to no one. You take a year-in and year-out Jenks and Union squad and you add the additional teams making it to the 6A semifinals and some 5A teams, and Oklahoma can go toe-to-toe with Texas, Ohio, Florida, and California’s best. Now, it is impossible to align games on particular years when two teams might be at their best, but with the sample we have, we can be proud.
Union’s record against elite high school programs outside the state of Oklahoma? 9-1 over the last 15 years. With wins over Evangel Christian (LA), McKinley Canton High School (OH), Fort Smith Northside (AR), and Clovis Prep (CA).
HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS
So when the holiday bowl season is upon us and you find yourself in one of those arguments with a brotherin-law or uncle about Oklahoma high school football, just cite some of the facts and your case will be made. Remember, we are all in this together. •
::
Jenks also shows that same type of football dominance of teams outside of Oklahoma over the last 15 years.
DECEMBER 2010
Tulsa ranks 14th and Oklahoma City ranks 25th in the amount of D-1 players per capita. Those are some strong numbers for a state that thrives on football. Perhaps one of the obvious facets in our arguments is to cite all the players who are competing and succeeding on a national level for predominant D-1 schools. With the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University, we see players like Ryan Broyles, Josh Cooper, Brandon Weeden, Ronnell Lewis and Austin Box lining up and starring for the Cowboys and Sooners.
2. Going toe-to-toe with others across the country.
::
In a study done by Matt Baker of the Tulsa World (www.Tulsaworld.com/starsearch), Oklahoma ranks 11th nationally in athletes signing a division one scholarship to play football in college. For every 1,000 students in Oklahoma, 1.41 will receive a D-1 scholarship to play football. With the amount of athletes that come out of Oklahoma every year to play D-1 football, it helps answer the question about the level of football that is played in Oklahoma.
NFL players Dominique Franks, Curtis Lofton, Kelly Gregg, Jermaine Gresham, Felix Jones, Wes Welker, Robert Meachem, Jeremy Shockey, Josh Brown, Chris Chamberlain, Gerald McCoy, Jammal Brown, and Sam Bradford are constantly making an impact on rosters across the country.

Should Stillwater Be Title Town?
24
The OSSAA has made a lot of schools happy in negotiating a terrific deal with Oklahoma State University and Stillwater. However, there are some uninformed, disgruntled fans who need to be educated on why. By Austin Chadwick
S
ince his appointment to the OSSAA executive secretary position in 2009, Ed Sheakly and the association has found itself in a much more stable position with decisionmaking. Though not everyone will agree with decisions that are made, the
facilitation of those decisions comes from Sheakley and his staff. Then those recommendations are always presented to the OSSAA board (Comprised of Oklahoma high school athletic directors) and put to a vote.
One of the more crucial decisions that was made and approved by a very competent OSSAA board was the decision to utilize the facilities at Oklahoma State University and Stillwater High School for all state championship football games until 2013.
When the OSSAA has to decide on venues for any event, tournament, championship, or event, there generally comes a facilities rental fee. With the countless times that these have to be negotiated, the OSSAA finds themselves trying to make the best decisions for their member schools.
“We worked very hard to present a situation to Oklahoma State University and the city of Stillwater to be the destination for all football state championship games,” said Sheakley. “The logistics of the deal were definitely in the best interest of the member schools.”
Those logistics included an extremely favorable agreement on facilities rental and allows the OSSAA to raise more funds for the schools involved. For each championship game, once the expenses are paid, the two visiting teams competing will receive 35% of the rev-share. The OSSAA receives the remaining 30% for operations. By far, the largest expense for the championships is the facility rental. This generally falls in the category of $10,000$14,000 per game.
The OSSAA is building a brand for Oklahoma high school football. And currently that brand is Stillwater. Kids and coaches for the next few years will have it as a season-long goal to reach Stillwater. “We can’t thank the people at Oklahoma State enough for listening to our reasoning and allowing us to present a fantastic agreement that will help benefit all.”
Considering that if you take 6A out of the equation (Union and Jenks regularly reach the state finals), the remaining Classes do a good job in parity and turn over title contenders about every year. With this, the mystique of going to Stillwater will continue to build. In the case of Union and Jenks, one can make the argument that traveling to Stillwater may be unnecessary when the two happen to play against each other, but in the grand scheme of things, Stillwater is the smartest move for the association and the member schools. Much like small school basketball players and teams strive to reach The Big House (Oklahoma State Fairgrounds Arena in OKC), perhaps the same can be said for all football players and teams about getting to Stillwater. Or should we call it “Title Town?”
TV Agreements:
:: HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS
The OSSAA also has a TV agreement with Fox Sports that allows the regional network to broadcast semifinals and all state championship games. If Fox Sports does not pick up a game for whatever reason, then they will either contract a local company to pick it up for them, or they will allow the OSSAA to put that particular game out for a very reasonable bid. •
DECEMBER 2010
Union and Jenks played in the 2010 state championship at Oklahoma State’s Boone Pickens Stadium and though they could have drawn better
“Many can argue either way in a case for Jenks and Union, but this will be best for all schools financially,” said Sheakly. “Even the small schools will have an opportunity to play in Stillwater. Class B and C will be at Stillwater High School.”
::
“We understand that once in a while we are going to get two teams that are very close in proximity,” said Sheakly. “And there could be a case that those two teams could draw better in another location. That was all taken into consideration and the unusual nature of this situation was considered, but couldn’t be justified in altering agreement to utilize OSU and Stillwater.”
at the University of Tulsa, the smart move for the OSSAA (and Jenks and Union) was to play it in Stillwater.

Another facet that needs to be brought to attention is that the OSSAA also takes care of the travel for the visiting teams. If they have to travel far enough, then meal per diem is dispersed and, in extreme cases, hotel per diem is dispersed. This is all in addition to the 35% rev-share that the school will receive after the conclusion of the game.

The senior quarterback tallied nearly 500 yards in 2010 as the Patriots played very hard all year and managed one win. Young helped develop a little bit of a foundation as the Patriots look to build a football program and will be much more competitive in 2011.
The senior helped provide leadership and a great roll to Norman’s outstanding 2010 campaign. Edington coupled with George Kittle and Jaime Myers as the three combined for over 600 yards and 5 TDs for the Tigers in 2010.

:: The Bombers junior running back had a year that can be looked upon as one of the best. Flanders hammered out 1,672 yards on the ground while compiling 22 TDs in 11 games. That is over 150 yards/game and two TDs. The Flanders name has been a mainstay in Midwest City over the past five years. John Flanders is a junior at Tulsa and has been a starter for the Golden Hurricane defensive backfield in 2010. Most notably intercepted the pas to secure the TU win at Notre Dame. Tim Flanders rushed for nearly 1,000 yards and 13 TDs for Sam Houston State in 2010. John will have another year to enhance his legacy at Midwest City and will be on the radar for many D-1 schools.

ith practice under way, scrimmages starting, and games right around the corner; every gym in the state will be packed with the sounds of basketball. This time every year some 600 or so boys and girls basketball teams have high hopes of winning that gold ball come March. What is going to separate the precious few champs from everyone else? That’s a good question to ponder. Having coached and trained players and teams the past 19 years and seeing many state champions and all-state players; I started watching what made them different. One thing I noticed about these players and teams was their ability to stay consistent all year. There were no great drops in performance from beginning to end. Sure they had down games here and there but not very often and not very many. How was this done, well I witnessed two key factors. One was the coach was organized and maintained an even keel, and two the team or players always worked on the little things every day. What do I mean by that?
Players work in the preseason on their skills and weight training to prepare for their upcoming season. Then when season starts all the focus goes to team concepts and their skills tend to deteriorate during the season! Yes you heard me right their skills get worse not better. This goes against conventional thinking as people just assume that during the season the players get a ton of reps in their skill work. That usually doesn’t happen very often. Coaches struggle with practice time due to sharing one gym with every school in the program. Thus coaches feel they need to focus on their team concepts, offenses, defenses, presses, etc. What gets left out most of the time is the ability for players to work on their skills. Just like everything else, if you don’t use them you lose them. There are many weeks that players get less than 50 shots per week. Do that over the three and a half months and you see the outcome the most
F E AT U R E
important time of the year; tournament time players have gone backward instead of forward.
The best coaches and players that I see make sure that they spend time on skill work every day. These are the little things that I have been talking about. Coaches want players to be able to play and not just run plays. There will come time during the season that the offense or defense breaks down, this is when players need to step up and make plays. The top teams have players that are prepared to do that based on their consistent training and attention to details. So coaches and players make sure that you use your time wisely and work on the little things. There will come a time during the season this type of training will pay off. It’s not always noticed instantly, but over the course of time you will see big results and maybe come March you and your team will be walking off the court holding that “gold ball”.

For a decade the Westmoore Pom Squad has dominated the state of Oklahoma and won five National Titles while doing so. - By Brad Heath

hen Westmoore opened in 1989 one of the first athletic programs to show real promise was the Pom Squad. Since that first year the Westmoore girls have consistently performed at the highest levels of competition and faired better than most. In more recent history the Pom Squad at Westmoore has ruled the state of Oklahoma with 10 titles. Winning state is a huge accomplishment, but for these girls winning state is just one of the stepping-stones to bigger goals like winning Nationals. The Westmoore Pom Squad has five National Titles to their credit and hopes to add another in 2011. “We are currently preparing to compete in Large Varsity Jazz and Large Varsity Hip Hop. We hope to bring home another title for 2011,” said coach Natalie Zielny. “Our National Titles are the 2007 UDA Large Varsity Jazz Champions, 2008 UDA
the amount of work and effort that they put into their sport. The main reason I think they work so hard is that they have two minutes to showcase their talent. In comparison to football or basketball, if a mistake is made early in a game, there is a possibility of rectifying the situation before the end of play. In a dance competition, if a mistake is made within the two minute dance, it will cost you the title.”
The squad today is lead by three seniors who keep the squad focused and ready to perform. “The team currently has a senior captain, Destiny Schmidt, and two senior co-captains, Kelsea Lakin and Jordan Jackson. These three girls are positive role models. They also make sure the team is on time, have the right equipment, etc… They hold all of the other girls accountable,” said Zielny.
I don’t think anyone ever understands the amount of work and effort that they put into their sport.

Large Hip Hop Champions, 2009 UDA Large Hip Hop Champions, and 2010 UDA Small Hip Hop Champions. They were the first team ever to switch from a large category to small and still win. A key factor in all of the success is the coach/choreographer Emily Shock. Coach Zielny explains the work that goes in to making a National Champion caliber squad. “I don’t think anyone ever understands
“These girls are all outstanding individuals, not just great dancers. They are leaders in the community, as well as the school. Our team includes the school’s Junior Class President, Valedictorian candidates, Student Council members, members of the Principals Leadership Council, and many more. The fact that they are able to achieve all of these things while practicing as much as they do is incredible!”

Health The Most Common Types of
Basketball Injuries Basketball is a great sport, but unfortunately injuries can and do occur. High school athletes cover the court at a high rate of speed jumping, stopping, turning, twisting and colliding sometimes without caution. The knees seem to take most of the abuse. Tendonitis is inflammation of a tendon likely occurring from overuse. Tendonitis of the patellar tendon is sometimes called “jumpers knee” because in sports such as basketball, the muscle contraction and force of hitting the ground after a jump strain the tendon. After repeated stress, the tendon may become inflamed or tear. Tears may require surgery, but athletes with tendonitis can usually return to activity after some rest, elevating the knee, applying ice and taking medication to decrease inflammation and swelling. A series of rehabilitation exercises is also useful.

Injuries to the meniscus occur when the athlete rotates the knee while bearing weight. A partial or total tear may occur when a person quickly twists or rotates the upper leg while the foot stays still.
Prompt treatment of injuries is important in avoiding further injury. Chronic injuries left untreated or not allowed to fully heal can lead to repeat injuries, or develop into more serious long-term problems such as osteoarthritis. The traditional credo of rest, ice, compression and elevation is effective for home care. However, if you’ve tried these steps immediately after injury and regularly for 48 hours, and pain and swelling do not improve, contact your doctor. VYPE.COM
Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injuries are usually caused by a sudden twisting motion like when the feet are planted one way and the knees are turned another. Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL) injury is most often the result of a direct impact. Medial and Lateral collateral ligament injuries are more common in football and hockey when the athletes receives a blow to the outside of the knee that stretches and tears the ligament on the inner side of the knee. The doctor may recommend an exercise program to strengthen surrounding muscles for incomplete tears. For a completely torn ligament, surgery is likely going to be the recommendation. The athlete can return to playing but success depends on a 4 to 6 month exercise and rehabilitation program. Some doctors even recommend one-year recovery time before returning to playing sports.
If the tear is tiny, the meniscus stays connected to the front and back of the knee; if the tear is large, the meniscus may be left hanging by a thread of cartilage. Generally, athletes feel some pain, particularly when the knee is straightened. Swelling may occur soon after injury if there is damage to blood vessels and may occur even later if there is inflammation of the joint lining. If the tear is small, the doctor may recommend an exercise program designed to build up the muscles and increase flexibility and strength. Arthroscopic or open surgery may be required for more extensive tears. Recovery takes several weeks, and depends on the condition of the cartilage and ligaments.

Anadarko Wrestlers Making Statement
David Glidden of Mustang was recently announced as the Gatorade Oklahoma Football Player of the Year. Glidden, a standout wide receiver, was selected from a talented pool of players. Glidden caught for more than 1,100 yards and 15 touchdowns this season. The Oklahoma State University commit added six interceptions while playing defense for Mustang. Other players to have won the award include Jerome Bettis, Anquan Boldin, Mark Sanchez and Wes Welker formerly of Heritage Hall. Recent winners from Oklahoma have included Mark Ginther from Jenks, Demarco Cobbs from Tulsa Central and Tim Flanders from Midwest City.
In late November Anadarko High School hosted the Anadarko Warrior Open, which featured several teams from Oklahoma. Anadarko’s Max Franklin won the 130-pound bracket while teammates Kolby Knipp (119-pound) and Dominique Polk (215-pound) took top honors in their divisions. Of the 41 Anadarko wrestlers that participated, 36 placed. Look for big things from the Warriors this season.
