realize but the people you meet along the way make it

easier. Every team wants to be the best and at VYPE, our team really is the best for high school sports coverage.

You’ll never find people who care more and work harder to fit more kids in every magazine. We know it’s not

possible for us to cover everything all the time, but that doesn’t keep us from trying.

Next month is our VYPE-U issue, and I can tell you we’re already hard at work on it. You’ll see our office lights on

from the wee hours of the morning until the latest hours of the night. Oklahoma high school athletes work hard, and our goal is to work just as hard.•

Swimmers are the Best Athletes I don’t want to seem like I’m dogging another kid here, but I have to tell you there’s no athlete like a swimmer. The amount of time they spend in the water practicing and the amount of time they spend in the gym or running is incredible. I doubt other athletes from other sports could keep up in the pool, however swimmers could probably keep up with just about anyone.

Josh Warren Blanchard High School - Powerlifting Josh Warren recently placed 1st at state during the Powerlifting competition. Warren won the 145-pound category beating competitors from Southmoore, Edmond North, Hilldale and Cache. The senior also played running back for the football team.

James Wolfe Purcell High School - Powerlifting James Wolfe seen here at the state Powerlifting competition in the clean. Wolfe is another athlete that crosses over into powerlifting after football. For the Dragons, Wolfe plays linebacker and receiver. The senior is looking forward to finishing the year and heading off to college.

Joel Blumenthal Deer Creek High School - Football With spring football right around the corner, we caught up with Jr. QB for the Deer Creek Antlers, Joel Blumenthal. Joel was kind enough to meet us for a quick photo and give us some insight on his preparation for the upcoming spring workouts and ultimately the 2011 football season. He participated in the UNDER ARMOR combine in Dallas in March and plans to compete in the April Nike Sparq combine as well. He is excited to earn the QB job for the Antlers this year and he bragged about the Antler defense led by Nolan Boyd. We think the Deer Creek Antlers are going to be a team to watch in 5A. 14

Josh Morgan Westmoore High School - Powerlifting Only a sophomore, Josh Morgan has a bright future ahead of him in powerlifting and in football. Morgan not only competed at the state powerlifting championships, but he performed very well. Morgan plays linebacker and running back for the Jaguars and could see plenty of action in 2011.

Mount Saint Mary’s senior Tony Tasetano has played six shut out games for Mount Saint Mary’s Rockets soccer team. Last year, with the help of his team, which includes his dad as assistant coach, Tony was named to the All City Soccer team and earned the Best Defense of the Year for his school. During the Spring Sports Media Day, we got Coach Francois Boda and Assistant Coach Matt Tasetano together to guess Tony’s answers. Coach Boda has coached at Mount Saint Mary’s for three years and has gotten to know Tony. Coach Tasetano is Tony’s dad and has also coached several years in addition to working at Digital Graphics. Henry Wittenberg won the Amateur Athletic Union’s National Wrestling Championship in the 191-pound division for a record eighth time. Wittenberg defeated Enzo Marinelli from Syracuse University. Four years earlier Wittenberg won a gold medal in wrestling at the Olympics. In his 13-year amateur career he won 350 bouts.

What a great way to start the season. In their first home game of the year the San Diego Padres set a National League record when their first three batters hit home runs. Marvell Wynne, Tony Gwynn and John Kruk all went yard on San Francisco pitcher Roger Mason.

April 14th, 1900

The first 50-mile automobile road race was held on Long Island. Andrew Riker, the only racer to drive an electric car, beat eight other drivers using gasoline. His time was 2 hours, 3 minutes and 30 seconds.

April 20th, 1986 Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls set an NBA record today for most points scored in a playoff game. In the Bulls’ double overtime loss to the Boston Celtics, Jordan had 63 points to break Elgin Baylor’s mark of 61 points.

Brad Davis of the Dallas Mavericks hit every one of his five three-point shots in a playoff game against the Utah Jazz. That earned him a place in the NBA record books. At that time no player had ever hit five three-pointers without a miss. Eight players had hit four in a row.

Talk about a bad day at the plate, Detroit Tiger slugger Leon Allen “Goose” Goslin hit into four double plays in a row. Despite the dismal performance by Goose the Tigers beat the Cleveland Indians, 4-1. How bad was Cleveland?

Advocate Reveals Connection Between Obesity, Hunger and How to Stop the Trend If the war against childhood obesity was a race, America would still be at the starting line. Childhood obesity has tripled in the past 30 years. About one out of every three children or teens is overweight or at risk of being overweight. Because children’s bodies are still developing, the damage to organs triggers medical problems extending throughout their lifetimes, according to a report issued by First Lady Michelle Obama’s Task Force on Childhood Obesity. Nearly 75 percent of Americans will be overweight or obese by 2019, and that condition will drag down the economy and impoverish the nation. What’s worse is that our nation is growing fatter at the same time it is growing hungrier. Another study by New York’s Food Research and Action Center describes another dilemma -- a new definition of hunger that actually describes how families can become obese at the same time they are going hungry. “The term the scientists used is ‘food-insecure,’” said Erin Baker, founder of Erin Baker’s Wholesome Baked Goods a (www.ErinBakers.com) bakery that combines the appeal of baked goodies with nutritional benefits to help fight obesity. “It describes the condition that hits a huge sector of the population. Low-income people tend to seek out cheaper food which in most cases is fast food, the result is a high calorie diet with poor nutritional value -- just a lot of empty calories void of fruits, vegetables and grains. Baker’s own journey started with being 20 pounds overweight and not feeling well most of the time as a result. She regarded food as an afterthought, but soon embarked on her own personal campaign to change her food and feel better. That campaign, combined with her 17 years in the natural food market, has inspired her advocacy of the fight against childhood obesity. She recommends the following steps for people who want to help reverse the trend toward obesity in their families’ lives: • Fruits, Vegetables, Grains -- Providing a diet that includes six to nine servings of fruits, vegetables and grains per day will change your family’s life. It will give them more energy, enable them to exercise more effectively and truly give everyone the fuel they need. • Preparation -- It’s easy to let the fast-paced nature of American life become the tail that wags the dog with regard to you and your family’s nutrition. Each meal should be thought of as sustenance, and you should ask yourself every day, “What is this meal doing for my body and my family’s bodies?” • Food as Fuel -- The cooking show revolution on cable has America’s mouths watering for tasty new dishes, but if you want to actually be healthier, you should also regard your food as the stuff that fuels your body. You wouldn’t try to fuel your car with garbage. It wouldn’t work. Why do you think your body is any different? “I hear all the time about how people just don’t have time to prepare decent meals anymore, and how they’d never have time for lunch if it wasn’t for the drive-though,” Baker said. “What we feed ourselves and our families is killing us, killing our kids and one day soon, it might actually serve to cripple our nation. Our families need to eat the right foods to truly satisfy the appetite…this will curb the tendency to eat the junk foods that cause obesity. There is a fine line between being unhealthy and being sick, and we have a whole country just about to cross that line. But in the face of these new studies, we really need to focus and change our habits now and start eating healthier.” •

Deer Creek Power

The Antlers of Deer Creek are eyeing the 5A state championship.

Moore’s Deer Creek squad has gotten off to a great start in 2011. The 5A #2 power will be in contention come May and with a healthy dose of talent. This could be the year of the Antlers. “We have put together a pretty good season thus far,” said Moore. “We are learning how to win games in different ways, and how the team is responding.”

After a 10-2 drumming of Carl Albert that saw starting pitcher and University of Arkansas commit Michael Fulmer strike out 16, the Antlers are on track in continuing their development into a state contender. Fulmer is 6-1 on the year so far and will be the ace come May. In early April, the Antlers’ only four losses came in Alabama tournament during spring break. Leaving them undefeated against Oklahoma teams.

Senior Brian Anderson is hitting over .450 this year and is also an Arkansas commitment. Jon Wilson and junior Isaac Hellbusch has been mashing all season long as well. Ross Stracke had 15 doubles last season and is on pace to surpass that in 2011. Also senior Jonathon Wilson who provides exceptional sped.

Hellbusch and Chase Stephens also help out in the rotation. The Antlers have tough tests coming in April against McGuinness and Shawnee, but should cruise through to the regionals and state with ease. “We like our chances,” said Moore. “But we have to keep working hard and developing.” •

Edmond Memorial Boys Class 6A State Champions

Class 6A Obi Emegano, Woodard brothers lead Memorial while Courtney Walker empowers Santa Fe in Class 6A Mike De La Garza has been a part of Edmond Memorial High School for decades. The last time Memorial won a state title was when De La Garza was coaching in 1993. The old coach has been the athletic director at Memorial since switching from coaching and he announced his retirement two weeks prior to the state tournament. The swan song commenced as he watched coach Shane Cowherd lead the Bulldogs through the 6A tournament and to the apex of Oklahoma high school basketball.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better way to go out,” said De La Garza.

The Bulldogs, ranked #1 all season, finished 27-1 after defeating the Midwest City Bombers 53-43. Jordan Woodard, a sophomore, was stellar throughout the tournament as his junior brother James also averaged in double figures. Emegano was the catalyst in the comeback win over the Bombers. “We were focused and we knew what we had to do to win,” said Emegano. “We kept battling and we believed in one another.” 28

Edmond Santa Fe Girls Class 6A State Champions James Woodard was outstanding with 15 points and 14 rebounds when it mattered most.

Emegano averaged over 14 ppg in the tournament while the Woodard brothers helped the senior go out on top. Senior Jared Jobe and junior Jordan Thomas provided outstanding shooting and leadership in helping the Bulldogs as well.

Quarterfinal action pitted Memorial against a talented Bixby team, but the Bulldogs quickly dispatched the Spartans. In the semis the Bulldogs faced a tough Santa Fe team led by Josh Richardson and Michael Onuoha. Jordan Woodard had a gamehigh 17 points in the 42-34 win. Woodard came down hard and turned an ankle and many thought he wouldn’t be able to play in the finals. The sophomore proved everyone wrong by coming back and playing a big role against the Bombers. On the girls side of things, the Midwest City Lady Bombers were the hands down favorite after completing and undefeated season and rolling through the quarters and semis. However, leading scorer Marisha Wallace went down in the semis against Edmond North with a knee injury and the Lady Bombers were a little short-handed in the finals. Courtney Walker and the Lady Wolves of Santa Fe took advantage and dominated a game that saw the Lady Wolves play

F E AT U R E the best game of the season. Walker had 17 points and six steals while Daisha Gonzaque had 10 points to win 56-36 and snap the 50-game winning streak by MWC.

“These girls really played incredibly well,” said coach Paul Bass. “I couldn’t be happier of their effort and the way they went about it.” Santa Fe brings home the first-ever title in girls basketball by any Edmond school. With three outstanding teams, Edmond found themselves in an all against MWC battle. The Lady Bombers faced the Lady Huskies and won in the semis, while Santa Fe faced Alli Decker and company for the Memorial Lady Bulldogs on the other side of the bracket. In the end it was Courtney Walker’s Lady Wolves that proved persistent. The junior is a Texas A&M commit and she showed that her game is extremely versatile throughout the tournament.

OKC McGuinness Girls Class 5A State Champions On the boys side of things, the Tulsa Public Schools were in control much of the tournament, but a wonderful Cinderella story from the El Reno Indians almost saw them through to the championship. Booker T. Washington was game enough to weather an El Reno finals charge and the Hornets won their second straight title.

Devante Moore’s 24 ppg in the tournament pushed the Indians all the way to the finals. Rodney Haydon’s boys were also led by senior Blaine Owens and son Conner Haydon. Junior point guard Raymond Little was fantastic throughout and a semifinal win over Tulsa Edison was the highlight of the season for the Indians.

Bishop McGuinness was also proving people wrong as the Lady Irish fought their way through TPS foe Tulsa Rogers in the quarterfinals and Shawnee in the semis. Jennifer Burch’s Lady Irish were primed in coming back to tie Shawnee late in the contest to force overtime. Then winning 43-40 after Elyse Hight, Caroline Cameron, Claire Pedulla, and Alexa Lienhard played one of the best games of their lives. Stephanie Milligan also contributed with key free throws down the stretch.

In the finals it was Lienhard and Hight were stellar, combining for 24 points, 14 rebounds, and seven blocked shots. Cameron was another senior, along with Lienhard, who willed the team to victory. Burch’s 12th season sees the first title on the girls side of things for McGuinness. APRIL 2011

Douglass Completes Title Defense After Heroic Efforts From Heckart and Spangler OKC Douglass was the heavy favorites and they proved to have great mettle as the tests came in waves. The Trojans knew that it would be a tough task as they were expected to matchup against the Seth Heckart-led Woodward Boomers, or Ryan 30

Spangler’s Bridge Creek Bobcats. However, the Trojans found themselves having to face both. In perhaps the most exciting quarterfinal game in the history of Oklahoma basketball, the heavily favored Trojans, led by Stephen Clark, DeVonte Smith, Dorrian Williams and Marquis BuxtonHill, matched up against an extremely game Woodward squad. A back and fourth battle ensued and it was Heckart’s 32 points that kept Woodward in the game. Clark ended up being too much for the Boomers, but not before Heckart’s last second three-pointer bounced off the rim in the 58-56 win.

The Trojans rolled Vinita 87-57 in the semis as Spangler and Bridge Creek awaited in the finals. A capacity crowd at the Big House watched Spangler, the Gatorade Player of the Year in Oklahoma, mount a legendary effort but Douglass outlasted a tired Bobcat squad to take the title 64-52.

Clark, Smith, and Williams all averaged double digits in the tournament and Terry Long’s goal of back-to-back titles came true for Douglass. The Trojans finish the season 27-4 and the only losses came in national tournaments against the best in the country. Brett Sanders’ Cache Lady Bulldogs were the defending 4A state champions as well. And with an impressive 22-2 record coming into the tournament, there was little question as to whether or not they were the favorites. After blowing through Star Spencer and taking care of Vinita in the semis 57-50, it was Nana Wallace and the Fort Gibson Tigers that stood in the way.

An epic matchup found the Lady Bulldogs and Lady Tigers going to overtime before the capacity Big House crowd. Honor Duvall, Bretlin Sanders, Lindsey Carter and Jennifer Rosado were the senior leaders for Cache and 58 ppg came from the quartet. It was Fort Gibson’s night as the Lady Tigers, and coach Jerry Walker completed a perfect season 28-0.

On the girls side, Bethel took care of Kansas with a 49-45 win. Jerry Johnson and his girls claimed the fourth state title in 13 years, but this one comes extra special. The season was dedicated to deceased former Bethel All-State golfer Kyle Lewis, who passed away last July. Sami Martin, Shay Flanagan, Taylor Cooper and Kylie Tatum all saw their wish come true. Junior Cooper returned from an ACL injury last year for sweet redemption.

“It has been an amazing season,” said Johnson. “It is very emotional and these girls had the will to see their goals reached.”

OKC Centennial Boys Class 3A State Champions OKC Centennial and OKC Northeast battled through the tournament to face each other in the state finals on the boys side. Led by Marcus Johnson and Craig Hackney, who combined for 38 points, Centennial upended All-City Conference rival Northeast 64-59. Korihan Jackson scored 18 points for Northeast and Caleb Crayton added 14, but it was Johnson’s night, who finished with 25 total. Scott Raper started the basketball program at the four-year-old school and the Bison retuned the favor to the students and community with their first state title.

A Boys Snyder Girls Class 2A State Champions Millwood fell short in their bid for a second straight title and fourth in six years. Varryl Franklinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s squad was defeated by runner-up Preston in the semis. Preston went on to lose to a destined Talihina squad 42-27. Taggert Lockhart and Jordan EagleRoad were the heroes for Talihina.

Snyder pulled off the huge upset as the Lady Cyclones beat Millwood 53-49 behind Marley Anderson and junior center Jordynn Vanpelt. Snyder came back from a large 13-point deficit to force the issue in the fourth quarter. The two Lady Cyclones combined for 39 points. Dayla Threatt finished with 13 points and Millwood gave credit to a solid performance from Snyder. Jeremy Tharpâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s girls completed the Cinderella tournament as the Lady Cyclones came in as heavy underdogs against the #1 ranked Lady Falcons.

F E AT U R E aylor Moore left the 2010 season in the same fashion he hopes to leave the 2011 season, as a state champion. The junior shot a 3-under-par 141 to claim the 6A individual title as a sophomore at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club.

“Taylor really carried us last year and he has been a great leader for us this year,” said Edmond Memorial golf coach Scott McDonald. “Taylor works extremely hard and he demands the same from his teammates.”

The great striker is already committed to play at the University of Arkansas and has high hopes for 2011. “We want to compete and do as well as possible,” Moore said. “Competitive golf is so much fun and the guys on the team are great to compete with and be around.”

Bobby Todd, Mason Wright, Rex Greene and Connor Kurtz are all seniors enjoying the ride in 2011.

On the women’s side of things, Southmoore senior Taylor Cusak is leading the Lady Sabercats to a wonderful season in 2011. After advancing to the state tournament as a junior last year, Cusak eyes the 6A title. “We have a great team and we are working so hard on our game to try and compete,” said Cusak. “Alexandra (Allie) Counts, Emily Hayes, and Jessica Se are all great golfers and we love working with each other and competing together. Don’t forget about Cassidy Herbster. She is a good player as well”

Cusak, an OCU commitment will be staying close to home next year, and she doesn’t mind at all. “OCU has a fantastic golf program and it will be great to stay close to home,” said the starlet. “I am pretty close to my parents and I enjoy spending time with family. Some might think it is a little corny, but going to the movies with family is something I love to do. I am excited to stay close to home.” Brad Black’s Southmoore squad has done well in preparation so far this year. “We are excited about the season,” said Black. “With Taylor and rest of the team, we can make some noise.”

Cusak grew up in Moore and cites the Belmar Golf Course as her absolute favorite. “We practice a lot at the Moore Golf Club, but Belmar is what I consider my home course. It is beautiful.” Competition for both competitors is heating up. Moore will be competing with Edmond North’s Sam Humphreys and Caleb Meyers. “Those guys are pretty good,” said Moore. “But I like our chances.”

For Cusak, the long hitter loves to compete against anyone. She cites that golf and the competition is a stress-reliever. “It is great to practice and compete. It is a get-a-way for me and a great reliever of stress. However, the stress of competition is something completely different. But it is a good kind of stress, the kind I thrive on.” Moore and Cusak are primed in 2011. Moore already claimed the Norman North Invitational in March and Cusak has had great showings as well. •

Edmond and Moore schools hook ver the last couple of years, the Mayor’s Cup has brought some fantastic baseball to Bricktown Ballpark. The forces of the Edmond Public Schools and the Moore Public Schools have collided to present a day of fun and excitement for fans and players alike. In 2011, the two school districts collided once again. With more than 2,000 fans attending the event, the schools were given a boost in fundraising. In 2009, Moore took the Mayor’s Cup, and last year the Edmond schools took home the trophy.

On a beautiful Saturday on April 2nd, Play began at 11 a.m. when Edmond North took on Moore. At 2:30 p.m., Santa Fe and Westmoore hooked up. And the nightcap featured Edmond Memorial and Southmoore.

Karl King’s squad is off to an up and down start with big wins early over defending 6A champs Union and top 10 ranked Westmoore and Southmoore. The Huskies returned four starters from a senior-laden team a year ago. Kelby Reneau returns as the most experienced with fellow senior Hunter Daylor and juniors Jared Benway and Chase Gibson.

David Hinckley likes the way his team is starting to come together. After a trip to Arizona that saw three losses, the Lions took an undefeated record against Oklahoma high schools into April. Kyle Vail and Sawyer Barnard have been stellar on the mound. In the field the Lions return just about everyone. The “team” concept is something that seniors Dylan Wilson and Robbie Washington have been following and Hinckley continues that motto.

Ty Hensley and Zac Cobble have been a mainstay for the Wolves in 2011. Lonnie Cobble’s squad is a do-it-all team that can hit, run, field and pitch. Early season matchups against top opponents Broken Arrow, Jenks and Bishop Kelley gave Cobble a good barometer of where his team is and what it needs to work on. Clayton Blackburn can throw and mash at the plate. Blackburn is heading to OU and had a stellar performance on the mound and in the batter’s box in a big 11-2 victory over a good Mustang team.

Jared Freeman’s Jaguars are off to a great start with the play of a good contingent of seniors. With big early season wins over Southmoore, Yukon and Edmond Memorial, the Jaguars have a shot to be a factor in the 6A state tournament race.

Kyle Roberts team got off to a rocky start, but has come on a bit better with some good hitting from his squad. John Lassiter, Grant Bohuslavicky, and Owen Vetter continue to develop and improve. Also Dylan Keester, Kyle Ashpile and Brad Honeycutt are carrying some of the weight as well.

The Sabercats started off the season with a bang, but faced a tough test in the Enid Tournament. A young squad headed up by senior Caleb Teel, and juniors Jacob Borrego and Cory Linn are continuing to improve. Borrego has two years of experience already and Teel has led the team in homeruns over the last couple of years. APRIL 2011

Connor is a 2-year varsity starter who maintains a 4.0 GPA in his classes all while giving back to his community. He serves in the National Honor Society, the Spanish National Honor Society, FCA, Teen Volunteers, Student Council and Key Club. Soccer heats up in OKC

soccer season is under way and it seems like everyone is chasing Norman North on the boys side. Edmond Santa Fe is also ranked in the top 10. On the girls side, Mustang is off to an amazing start while Robert Brockâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Putnam City West girls have proved to be a stiff test.

The Timberwolves are looking to defend their title as state champions this year. Expect to see some great plays from seniors Will Smith, JT Harrison, Josh Phillips, Kyle Allen and Trevor Laffoon. Smith was the 6A leading scorer for 2010 and Harrisonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s led the Timberwolves in assists las year. Laffoon and Phillips put up an unmovable defense. Watch for Allen to score off headers, last season he scored two goals that way. APRIL 2011

Coach Joe Peeler and his Bulldogs have their eyes set on dethroning Norman North. The boys took the state championship in 2009 and seniors Michael Shanahan and Dillon Hammond are itching to get that title one more time before they graduate. Shanahan was best defensive player in 2009, best offensive player in 2010 and was named to the All-City and All District teams last season along with Hammond. Hammond was defensive player on the year last season, and his defense has only improved in the offseason.

The Broncos are champing at the bit to get to state this year. Senior Abby Hodgen was named to the All City team in 2008 and 2010. Along with fellow senior Alissa Jones, look to see some big plays. In addition to their soccer playing, the girls also volunteer. Jones volunteers with Students Assisting Students where she mentors special needs students. Expect to see coach Mike Mason and the Broncos playing and volunteering around town.

Coach Robert Brock and the Patriots arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just taking over the soccer field, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re also striving for academic excellence. Expect to see a lot of action at their games, especially from seniors Monce Gil, Marlene Williams, Nancy Gonzalez and Kelsey Coleman. Coleman has been playing soccer since the second grade and is a leader not just on the team, but also in her other extra curricular activities. Watch for the Patriots on Honor Rolls and on the soccer field.

The Millers are pumped up for this season. Coach Matt Cook has six seniors and four juniors this season, giving his team some experience and depth. Watch for Megan Wilkerson, Hayley Arthur, Cama Dooley and George Christie. The four unstoppable seniors have earned top marks academically and on the field. Wilkerson has been named All District and All Conference two years and won the Player with Passion award. Arthur was named tournament MVP last season and Christie was All Conference in 2010, as well as the leading scorer in 2008 and 2009. Dooley, the team captain, was Defensive Player of the Year last season and went All District and All Conference.

April 21-22 will be the Edmond track classic at Edmond North. All Edmond schools will be participating as well as many other schools from the area.

Area track teams look to take on the competition this spring.

klahoma has a rich tradition in track and field. A few area high school teams are dialed in for a great season. Sunny Baldridge and the Edmond Memorial track team has had great success and looks to continue in 2011. Edmond Santa Fe is led by one of the best athletes in the state (Gunnar Nixon) and backs it up with a tremendous team. Putnam City North can fly and will be a strong competitor.

Coach Sunny Baldridge and the Bulldogs are gearing up for another record setting year — and not just on the track. Several of his runners have 3.5 or higher GPAs. Leading his team is senior Gloria Moseley, who has a 4.0 GPA, placed third in the state for discus last year. Rachel Brown, another team leader, has been a varsity runner on the track team since she was a freshman and came in fourth place in the two mile at the state track meet in 2010. Senior Chelsea Abinah is another academic rock star and four year varsity runner. Also look for juniors Taylor Scott and Tara Lewis and sophomores Emerald Scott and Cherrish Abinah to make a big impact.

Edmond Santa Fe

The Wolves were nipping at Edmond Memorial’s heels at the March 29 track meet. Coach Carl Hawkins and his seniors are ready to take state. Expect to see seniors Zac Cobble, Gunnar Nixon, and Travis Hinton setting some new records and motivating their teammates, too. Although juniors Travis Hinton and Korey Eakers couldn’t live without their XBoxes, they’ll be hitting the track hard this season with fellow junior Arya Bahreini. Not to be forgotten is sophomore Matthew Giudice II, who’s looking sharp this season.

Putnam City North

The Panthers aren’t messing around this season. It might be Coach Steffi Patton’s first year, but she’s hard them working hard since the first day of practice. Seniors Maresha Bryant and Quarté Robinson don’t need the push. Bryant broke the school record for hurdles twice, finally setting the new record at 15.3 seconds. Robinson earned the high jump state medal and this year his highest jump is 6’8. Junior Stefan Johnson is no slouch either, having taken several local and state medals for long jump and the high jump. Expect a great show from sophomore junior Tyler Wisby who’s looking to break some state records. 42

orking for almost 20 years as a physical therapist and athletic trainer, I have treated numerous athletes with muscular and joint sprains. In every case, it would have been much easier to prevent those injuries rather than to rehabilitate them after the fact. As an athlete, even a small injury can spell disaster for a competitive season. What can you as an athlete do to lessen the chance for injury? This month we will discuss warming up, cooling down, and stretching and how these activities will help you stay competitive and lessen your chance of injury. Stretching as a means of reducing injury has been studied extensively throughout the years. While there are often conflicting findings, many studies have shown that stretching does in fact increase range of motion of the muscle and the joint or joints that it crosses. This can improve the lengthtension relationship of the muscle and thus the muscles ability to generate force. A shortened muscle is not able to produce as much force as one with normal length. A

Based on this information, I feel stretching is necessary. While stretching is an important component of injury prevention the most recent findings indicate that warming up prior to athletic competition may be the most important part of an injury prevention program. Just like you need to warm up a car on a cold winter morning your body needs the same attention. The goals of warming up are to increase your respiration (breathing), heart rate, core temperature, and pliability of muscles and tendons. A warm up should ideally consist of 15 to 20 minutes of aerobic exercise, plyometrics, sport specific agility drills, and finally light stretching.

Following your athletic endeavor, cooling down is also important. Cooling down includes a light recovery jog followed by stretching of the musculature. When stretching you want to focus on the large muscle groups including the hamstrings, quadriceps, hip flexors, and calf muscles. The stretches should be held for 30 seconds and repeated 3 to 4 times for each muscle group. An important point to remember when stretching is to never stretch a “cold” muscle. Stretching a cold or injured muscle may actually led to further injury or damage to the tissue. Stretching should be

done slow with no bouncing which can stress the tissue. The stretch should be one that is pain free. The “no pain no gain” rule does not apply in this circumstance. Finally the athlete should breathe normally and deeply when stretching, think of this as a time to relax and cool down the muscle gradually. Vigorous static stretching prior to an athletic event can injure cold muscles as stated earlier. It can also decrease the short term contractility or function of a muscle. In other words, reaction time, agility, and strength can be lost if you over stretch a muscle statically before an event. Remember warm-up well, always cool down and stretch after your event. If you have questions regarding warming up and stretching consult a Valir Physical therapist or certified athletic trainer to construct a program to meet your needs.
