ANKLE, KNEE OR ELBOW PAIN? Pain Free Lounge is getting results. Pain Free Loung uses Medsonix which is a versatile therapy system that was founded in Las Vegas and used extensively by those with complicated medical conditions due to its ability to relieve chronic pain. Over time, athletes began to seek treatment to aid in healing after acute injuries, surgeries, and painful overuse. The story of Caden Nerdin . . .
A Medsonix treatment center in Utah is receiving tremendous feedback from the local sports community, and the tale of Caden Nerdin is definitely a success story.
Several years ago Caden rolled his ankle playing Soccer. He received immediate care from both the high school athletic trainer and his doctor. The ankle completely healed over the course of the next three months. About one year later Caden rolled the same ankle with the same severity but was experiencing a tremendous amount of pain. Caden's mother was looking for a way to relieve the pain and contacted Pain Free Lounge.
Two days following Caden’s first use of Medsonix he texted his mom, “Ok so I think the Medsonix thing gave me a lot of energy and I wasn’t tired this morning!”
Caden continued to receive the same medical care but he also made regular visits to Pain Free Lounge. His parents and coaches were astonished at the rate of recovery Caden experienced. Within three weeks he was able to play at his normal level, without pain. Caden uses Medsonix on a regular basis to up his game, feel more energized, maintain academic focus and to help heal injuries faster.

CHA's Joseph Lemieux
VYPE Top 100 selectee Joseph Lemieux became one of the top running backs in the state last year after rushing for more than 3,200 yards and 40-plus touchdowns. Lemieux paused for a few minutes to discuss the upcoming season and what he loves about the game of football.
VYPE: You're about to start another season. What are you looking forward to the most and what do you want to accomplish? Lemieux: Well this season I am looking forward to making a run at the state championship with my team. This time of year is my favorite and I love getting out on the field on Friday nights with my buddies and playing our hearts out. I hope to be one of the top rushers in the state this year, but more importantly I hope my team can make it deep into the playoffs! VYPE: What's the funniest thing someone has said in the huddle? Lemieux: This is kind of tough to answer, because our offense never really huddles (laughs)! But if I had to choose the funni-
est thing that has happened in a game to me, it would be from my sophomore year against Northeast. I was back on punt return with my buddy Braden Mikes, and he fields the punt and runs down the sidelines and he gets hit and spins, and the ball pops out and flies into my arms and I run another 25 yards or so. On film it looked like I just stole the ball from him!
VYPE: Is there something about the pregame warm-up that you like the most?
Lemieux: I love doing "Quick Calls.” It's a routine we do before every game near the end of warm ups. Everyone spreads out across the field and we do these random activities like thigh slaps, jumping jacks and boxing punches (laughs)! Then we all get in a circle and get hype! VYPE: Do you have a ritual or routine that you go through before every game? Lemieux: I guess the pregame stuff is my routine. And listening to music in the locker room on a speaker.
VYPE: What is Friday morning like? Are you feeling the nerves yet? Lemieux: I usually am a little excited when I
wake up on Friday. Not really nerves. I usually don't focus at school at all, mostly just stare at the clock all day waiting to get out of there. VYPE: Who on the team is the biggest hitter? Lemieux: Our middle linebacker Preston Whitmill. He's made some guys feel pain! VYPE: Once you graduate, what do you think you'll miss the most?
Lemieux: I'll miss the friendships with the players and the coaches the most. I'll miss playing out there on Friday nights in front of the crowds.
VYPE: If the 50-year old Joseph Lemieux came back to a game and pulled you aside, what advice do you think the 50 year old you would say? Lemieux: He would say don't get caught at the one yard line, and try not to suck at defense. Also Xbox One is better than PlayStation 4, and The Office is the greatest show ever. Quick Hits: Santa Fe has claimed half of the Edlam titles over the past decade, the last coming in 2011. The Wolves defeated Norman 49-28 in the season finale, earning their sixth win in nine tries against the Tigers. Santa Fe won all three games away from Wantland Stadium a year ago. Last 5 Years: 2014 - 5-5 2013 - 6-5 2012 - 10-2 2011 – 10-2 2010 – 1-9
OFFENSE Taking over as a new coach in Class 6A-I is never going to be an easy task. What Edmond Santa Fe head coach Kyle White has working in his favor though, is the return of six offensive starters. Leading the charge offensively for the Wolves will be VYPE Top 100 selection Darran Williams (6-0, 185, Sr.) at running back. Last season Williams proved he is a do-it-all back with 1,913 yards rushing and 22 touchdowns on 277 carries all while catching 14 passes for 259 yards and two touchdowns. JR Bryson (5-10, 200, Sr.) will provide a good change of pace out of the backfield for the Wolves. Last season Bryson carried the ball 59 times for 388 yards and five touchdowns. Dustin Anthony running backs will be a massive offensive line anchored by Jacob Goss (6-3, 320, Sr.). Dustin Anthony (6-2, 275, Sr.) and Justin Richardson (6-2, 290, Sr.) will also provide a good deal of beef up front. On the outside, look for wide receivers Davion Bowler (6-0, 180, Jr.) and Dylan Williams (6-0, 180, Sr.) to be the go-to targets. Last year, Williams caught 25 passes for 367 yards while Bowler added 12 catches for 251 yards and one touchdown. DEFENSE The offense will get some headlines this year but the big story will be the Wolves’ defense. That hype is largely due to VYPE Top 100 player Calvin Bundage (6-3, 190, Sr.) but also due to the other seven returning defensive starters. Last season Bundage, who will start at safety, racked up 81 tackles last year and has quickly become one of the most highly recruited players in Oklahoma. Another defensive back to look out for this year is cornerback Juan Johnson (5-10, 175, Sr.).
*Oklahoman All-State Selections
As a junior, Johnson picked off five passes and forced a fumble. The Wolves also figure to be very strong at linebacker this year. Leading the way in the middle of the defense will be Zeke Jenkins (5-11, 205, Sr.) and Dillon Hall (6-0, 200, Sr.). Mike Coats (6-2, 200, Sr.) and Cameron Gonzaque (5-11, 210, Sr.) will also see a good deal of time at linebacker spots throughout the season. Rounding out the list of key defensive players for the Wolves is defensive lineman Diamon House (6-1, 270, Sr.). House will anchor the Wolves in the trenches this year after he piled up 30 tackles, one sack and one tackle for loss last year as a junior.

OFFENSE As head coach Justin Merideth begins his seventh season at the helm, the Bulldogs will be reloading their offense that last year averaged almost 400 yards per game while scoring 29 points per contest. Even though Warren Wand has graduated, the mindset remains “next man up” for the Bulldogs as Tate Troxell (5-11, 180, Sr.) will be called upon to tote the rock, along with Brandon Hill (5-9, 170, Jr.) and M’bari Snoddy (5-10, 160, So.). Passing the eye test at quarterback will be Grant Decker (6-2, 200, Jr.), who brings size, strong arm and leadership skills to the signal calling duties. Memorial has multiple threats to stretch the field through the air including Parker Smith (5-9, 140, Jr.), Chris Cohen (6-0, 170, Sr.)

Ethan Walker and Brendon Mitchell (6-5, 190, So.) at wide receiver. Three-year starter Ethan Walker (6-2, 230, Sr.) returns to anchor efforts in the trench along with a pair of impressive junior linemen, Grant Hill (6-1, 240, Jr.) and Alex Eichler (6-2, 240, Jr.). The Bulldogs’ opportunities to score will no doubt rely upon depth development as only five starters return. Yet, Merideth remains confident in his team’s offensive outlook. “We’re going to stay in the no-huddle hurry-up style offense,” said Merideth. “And Tate and Grant will be keys to our success. We graduated stats but the ‘Dogs still have playmakers with the ability to make big plays on every snap.” DEFENSE Last year, Memorial opened the season winning three of its first four games including a sweep of Edlam for a second consecutive year. With proven talent in key positions, the Bulldogs appear ready to stymie their opponents with an aggressive, pressure style defensive unit and return to the Class 6A playoffs for the sixth time in the last seven seasons. A switch to a 3-4 alignment allows the Bulldogs to feature ballseeking linebackers including Zeke Mammen (6-1, 215, Sr.), who totaled 105 tackles last season patrolling inside while Del Perkins (5-10, 195, Sr.) roams the perimeter after making 84 tackles in 2014. Beginning the season, the experience and skill in the secondary is evident as this year’s quartet of starters have plenty on-field playing time as both safeties, Jase George (6-1, 185, Sr.) and Even Greene (5-11, 185, Sr.) return to the gridiron plus tried and proven

cornerbacks Aaron Ward (5-10, 175, Sr.) and Griffin Amen (5-9, 170, Sr.). Merideth will look to Dairion Gooden (6-3, 215, Sr.) to bolster the muscle up front. “We’re looking forward to the challenges playing in 6A-1,” said Merideth. “It’s a tough schedule that includes the three-time state champion, Jenks. When all the pieces come together, we’re looking forward to the challenge.”

Alli Evans - Edmond Memorial Volleyball
The Edmond Memorial Lady Bulldogs volleyball team is off to a solid start. After their first two
matches, the Lady Bulldogs stand at 2-0, with two dominating wins against Moore and Owasso. One of the leaders for the squad is junior Alli Evans. Evans spots up at the outside hitter position, but she also plays on the back row. Evans has been instrumental in the Lady Bulldogs’ hot start. If she continues to play well, Edmond Memorial will be in good shape. Volleyball is the only sport Evans is participating in this year. Evans is expecting big things from her team this season.
“I expect the team to continue to work hard and stay focused on our goal to win state,” Evans said. “We are going to do our best and see where that takes us. If our best
is winning a state championship, that would be great, but if not, at least we know we did all we could.”
Those are strong words from a leader, who expects big things from her team. Evans said her favorite part of playing volleyball is all the friendships she has made. “I also love getting big kills,” Evans said. After high school, Evans plans to attend the University of Tulsa to play volleyball. For her hard work and dedication to Lady Bulldog volleyball, Alli Evans is the Edmond Memorial Athlete of the Month.

Quick Hits: The 2012 Huskies are responsible for the only Edlam title in the past decade.
Edmond North enters 2015 on a fourgame losing streak. It’s the first time the Huskies have lost four in a row since dropping the first five of the 2006 season.
The Huskies have lost the last two regular season meetings against Edmond Memorial, but have won the only two postseason meetings between the schools in 2012 and 2013. Last 5 Years: 2014 - 3-7 2013 - 7-5 2012 - 10-2 2011 – 9-3 2010 – 6-6
OFFENSE The Huskies struggled in 2014 amongst one of the toughest districts in Class 6A-I. Coach Scott Burger is hoping to turn that around this season. With most of his backfield returning, Burger wants to run a more up-tempo offense in order to get his athletes out in space. Running back Jerry Minnifield (5-8, 165, Sr.) led the Huskies in carries last season with 76. The speedster carried the ball for 317 yards and scored six touchdowns, he will be expected to carry most of the load this season. Toby Sanderson (6-2, 270, Sr.) will be the anchor on the offensive line. The Huskies will need him to set the example for the younger lineman. Quarterback Noah Tews (6-1, 195, Sr.) can run it and pass it. Tews will split time with Anthony Belton (5-10, 160, Jr.) who is more of a running threat. Last season, Belton ran for 229 yards and three touchdowns. Mitchell Perkinson (5-11, 170, Sr.), the top receiving threat for Tews and Belton, returns after

Mitchell Perkinson hauling in 18 catches for 183 yards and a touchdown during the 2014 campaign. He will be heavily relied on in the passing game, and will be expected to make the big catches. With only four offensive starters returning, combined with their tough district, the margin for error will be slim for the Huskies. They are prepared to rise to the challenge.
Toby Sanderson and coach Burger believes his guys have what it takes to get it done. Last season, they held opponents to single digit scoring totals twice in 10 games. This year, they will need to slow offenses down to get good field position for the offense. “Our kids have been working hard in the offseason,” Burger said. “We are just looking to improve each day and continue to get better.”
DEFENSE With limited experience on the offensive side of the ball, the Huskies will be forced to rely on their defense. Five defensive starters return, and three of them are in the secondary, which will be their strength. Antonio Williams (5-10, 160, Sr.) will spearhead the trio of ® defensive backs. Carter AUTO • HOME • LIFE Randolph (6-0, 180, Jr.) and Jordan Prince (5-8, 165, Sr.) join Williams in the secondary. OFFENSE Oklahoma Christian was 13-0 before facing state runner-up Nowata in the state semifinals, where Nowata beat the Saints 20-0. Heading into 2015, the Saints have a new offensive coordinator, but a core of impact players returning. “It’s not a rebuilding year but a reloading year,” head coach Derek Turner said. “This is the largest group of players we’ve ever had.” Offensive coordinator Todd Barnes comes from Norman North, and he will continue to run the spread offense the Saints are familiar with. Quarterback Thomas Qualls (5-11, 190, Sr.) returns after a productive season. He will lead the team alongside running backs Dawson Schick (5-11, 185, Sr.) and London Crytzer (5-9, 195, Sr.). Jacob Smith (5-11, 220, Sr.) will be the anchor on an offensive line with some fresh faces. Barnes will introduce a tight end to the offense for the first time in 10 years. The Saints are expecting their production to continue to be stellar. DEFENSE “We are still running the 30 stack,” Turner said. “We are replacing several very talented players from last year.” The defense will have its share of challenges, but the Saints have the talent to weather any storm they face. JP Morris (6-4, 250, Jr.) will lead the defense alongside Smith. Morris is a gritty defensive lineman who will set the tone for the rest of the defense. Smith and Crytzer are a dynamic duo at the linebacker position. Nathan Moore (6-1, 215, Sr.) adds depth to both lines. Austin Puckett (6-6, 200, Sr.) is a huge defensive back who can disrupt offenses with his size. OFFENSE The Eagles were an extremely young football team in 2014, which resulted in some struggles. This season, they are still young, but not extremely young. Coach Grey Powell said if his young guys can mature and play sound football, the Eagles have a great chance to be a better team in 2015. Nine starters return on offense, including all of their skill players. Headlining that group is quarterback Caleb Powell (6-0, 185, Jr.). He made huge strides as a sophomore, gaining 2,555 total yards and 25 total touchdowns. Dre Hill (5-9, 160, So.) and Tommy Imbu (5-7, 210, So.) both had productive freshman seasons. Hill gained 910 total yards and scored seven touchdowns, while Imbu finished with 721 total yards and six touchdowns. Both will be expected to step up into greater roles this season. Riley Roper (6-2, 210, So.) and Christian Balaban (6-0, 190, Jr.) will anchor a young offensive line.
DEFENSE Nine starters return to a defense that struggled to stop people in 2014. This season, that should change. With an aggressive defense that likes to blitz, the Eagles should force plenty of turnovers. Powell is the leader on this side of the ball as well. He did it all in 2014, finishing with 62 total tackles, three interceptions, four forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. Linebacker Kody Wilson (5-7, 155, So.) was impactful as a freshman, recording 74 total tackles and three forced fumbles. Thomas Harris (6-1, 230, So.) is an anchor up front on the defensive line. Case Martin (5-8, 180, Sr.) adds depth to the linebacker core. Jalen Anderson (6-0, 165, Sr.) will fill in at corner back.
OFFENSE A year ago the Wildcats went undefeated in the regular season. Then they won four-straight playoff games to reach the Class A finals. Unfortunately for the Cashion faithful that was where the winning stopped as Thomas knocked off the Wildcats by a final score of 28-0, leaving the Wildcats taking home the silver ball instead of the gold they had hoped for. This year the Wildcats will turn to a talented group of skill players led by VYPE Top 100 selection Matt Harman (Jr.) at quarterback. Last season Harman threw for 3,237 yards and 39 touchdowns and will be counted on to play at a high level again this year. Running back Blakely Liebmann (Sr.) and wide receiver Josh Hampton (Sr.) will also be key players in the Cashion offense this year. In 2014 Liebmann ran for 843 yards and 18 touchdowns while Hampton caught 64 passes for 927 yards and 11 scores.
DEFENSE On the defensive side of the ball Harman and Blakely will both man the safety spots in the Cashion secondary. Ryan Harrel (Sr.) will also start in the secondary for the Wildcats this year and give Cashion a three-year starter at cornerback. Matt Farrow (Jr.) is a player that
Matt Farrow Cashion will lean on heavily at linebacker after he recorded 71 tackles in his sophomore season. Overall look for the Wildcats to be an aggressive unit this year that doesn’t rely as heavily on their base defense since they will be replacing their entire defensive line from last season. “Our goals are really what they are every season. We want to win our district and then just take things one game at a time when we get to the playoffs,” Cashion head coach Lynn Shackelford said. Blake Landon
DEFENSE Leading the way defensively is VYPE Top 100 player Blake Landon (6-2, 220, Sr.). Landon recorded an amazing 216 tackles and three sacks last year at linebacker. As the leader of the defense, Landon elevates his play to meet the challenges of a tough schedule. Fellow linebacker Jacob Schimmels (6-0, 185, Sr.) recorded 134 tackles of his own last season. The tandem of Landon and Schimmels seem to have a hand in every play on defense. Add senior Jake Miles (6-1, 185, Sr.) to the mix and you have three linebackers capable of dominating a game. The defensive line benefits from having those aggressive linebackers. Joe Winfield (6-1, 235, Sr.) and Jake Strickland (6-3, 285, Jr.) will force opposing offenses to adjust their game due to their push up front. Combine they accounted for nearly 200 tackles and Winfield has an interception to his credit. The secondary is solid with Kyle Sander (5-10, 175, Sr.) and Tony Rayburn (61, 185, Jr.). Sander notched over 100 tackles and four interceptions, while Rayburn had 65 tackles and three picks of his own. “We are going to play an attacking, physical defense that runs well to the ball,” said coach Gower. Several players were honored last year with AllDistrict and All-Conference awards. Those players include Landon, Sims, McGraw, Kerstetter and kicker Parker Noble.
OFFENSE Head coach Grant Gower and the Deer Creek Antlers have plenty to be excited about this upcoming season. Returning seven starters on offense, coach Gower plans to run an up-tempo, fast paced, high energy spread offense. The player charged with keeping it all together is quarterback Clayton Sims (6-2, 180, Sr.) Last season Sims threw for 2,514 yards and 25 touchdowns. With another year under his belt, Sims has proven he has the talent and the skill set to lead this team into the playoffs. He will have two targets in the passing game as Noah McGraw (6-3, 180, Sr.) and Zach Kerstetter (5-7, 160, Jr.) have the starting jobs at wide receiver looked up. McGraw contributed 819 yards and 13 touchdowns, while Kerstetter recorded 1,034 yards and 11 touchdowns. Running back Tahj Davidson (6-0, 215, Sr.) adds another element to the Deer Creek attack. Davidson had 473 yards on the ground and notched five touchdowns. “We are very excited about the 2015 season. Coming off the district championship last year in one of the toughest districts in the state, we bring back a great group of student-athletes that ® were instrumental in the past success AUTO • HOME • LIFE of the program. 2014 was “The Year of the Charger” in Class 3A. Heritage Hall finished the season with a 14-1 record, a district championship, and to top it all off, a state championship. With a new quarterback yet to be named (at press time) for 2015, coach Brett
Bogert hopes his team can recapture the magic from last season. “It is a new year and a new team,” Bogert said, “but we will have the same goals of winning the district and the state championship.” Although they have yet to name a new starting quarterback, the Chargers return a solid nucleus of talented players. VYPE Top 100 selectees Terrell “Tank” Love (5-9, 225, Sr.) and Luther Harris (6-6, 350, Sr.) are the main focus of that nucleus, but the talent doesn’t end there. In 2014, Love finished with 229 carries, 1,386 yards and 29 touchdowns. That’s just the beginning for him. He caught two touchdowns and passed for one, as well. Tevin McDaniel (6-0, 220, Sr.) will join Love in the backfield to help take some of the load off the new QB. McDaniel had 250 yards rushing and five touchdowns on the ground, adding to an impressive 828 receiving yards and nine touchdowns. Jack Ross (6-1, 240, Jr.) is an experienced lineman who gives the Chargers depth at that position. DEFENSE The Chargers return eight starters on defense, some of which are two-way players. Love recorded 144 tackles, eight sacks and three interceptions in addition to his gaudy offensive numbers. McDaniel recorded 11 sacks in 2014. Dawson Evans (5-11, 195, Jr.) returns after a solid sophomore campaign. He recorded 159 tackles and a sack from his free safety position. Linebacker Andrew McDonald (5-11, 190, Sr.) had an impressive junior season next to Love. He finished with 132 tackles, seven sacks, three interceptions and a defensive touchdown. Blake Brigham (5-10, 185, Sr.) is another experienced two-way lineman with
113 tackles and eight sacks in 2014. Blake Adams (6-0, 170, So.), who will compete for the starting quarterback spot, was impressive on defense as a freshman. He finished with 80 tackles, one sack and four interceptions. “We are a pressure-based defense,” Bogert explained. “Expect an experienced aggressive defense that will include 11 players who all started or saw significant playing time last season.” Photos BY: Cindy Ritchie of Cindy Ritchie Photography

OFFENSE There is no doubt that there is some topnotch talent on the west side of the state and in Moore in general. Southmoore is already emerging as a sexy pick to challenge the traditional east side powers but Westmoore won’t be a team anybody can sleep on. With two VYPE Top 100 players expect the Jaguars to pile up the wins this year. Deshawn Lookout (6-2, 190, Sr.) is the first of those Top 100 players and will start at wide receiver this season. Lookout came on strong last season and already has a scholarship offer from Arkansas State and is drawing interest from several other schools. Quarterback Braxton Bohrofen (6-1, 190, So.) and running back Mike Hotchkins (5-8, 165, Jr.) will be two other key skill players in the Westmoore offense this season. VYPEOK.COM

DEFENSE Tre Towery (6-2, 300, Sr.) is the Jaguars second Top 100 player and will be the team’s leader on defense. Towery will start at defensive line and be the player everything revolves around in the Jaguars 3-4 scheme. Last season Towery had 86 tackles, three tackles for loss and one sack. Along with those numbers Towery is already drawing interest from Missouri, Texas Tech and several other DI programs. Desmond Vick (6-1, 240, Sr.) will also start on the defensive line and provide a good amount of pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Last season Vick led the Jaguars in sacks with five and also had 12 quarterback hurries. Working in the middle of the defense, behind the two big linemen, will be middle linebacker Tyler Addison (5-10, 210, Sr.) and outside linebacker Austin Malicott (6-0, 225, Sr.). Finally, Derek Loccident (6-1, 190, Sr.) will lead the Jaguars’ secondary this year after leading the team in interceptions last season with four. Loccident will also help return kickoffs and punts this year and is definitely a threat to make a big play any time he is on the field.
Mike Hotchkins
Last year Hotchkins ran for 397 yards and two touchdowns on 76 carries and will be expected to do more than that this year as his workload increases. Offensive linemen Jordan Finn (6-1, 255, Jr.) and Anthony Adams (6-0, 365, Sr.) will do the dirty work in the trenches for the Jaguars. Overall the Jaguars will need to replace several key players from last year’s offense but that isn’t keeping head coach Adam Gaylor from having a positive outlook. “We have to replace several key players including Dahu Green and Bryson Lee. Braxton was the backup quarterback last year and started for the state runner-up baseball team. Continuing to improve at offensive line will aid in the transition of our new skill players,” Gaylor said. “Look for running back Mike Hotchkins to have a breakout year. We have to find ways to get him in the open field and be more consistent running the football.”

Last 5 Years: 2014 - 4-7 2013 - 6-4 2012 - 7-4 2011 – 5-6 2010 – 6-4
OFFENSE Back in 2009 Southmoore made it all the way to the Class 6A semifinals before losing to Jenks. This year, much like 2009, many people across the state are dubbing the Sabercats as the team to finally end the east side’s dominance. In order to be the team that stops the east side dynasty the Sabercats will need a potent offense and leading that offense this year is VYPE Top 100 selection Dunya Rice (5-9, 170, Sr.). Rice is already drawing interest from Tulsa, Houston and Missouri and is a versatile athlete who will play both running back and receiver this year. Quarterback Casey Thompson (6-1,

Casey Thompson 180, So.) is a talented athlete who is still getting better every day. Last season as a freshman Thompson threw for 1,180 yards and ran for 553 more as he racked up 15 total touchdowns. Running back Darrian Moss (5-9, 175, Sr.) ran for 765 yards last year and is another player that will turn heads across the state. Last but not least, expect wide receiver Quindon Lewis (6-2, 180, Jr.) to make plays every time the lights come on. Although the headlines will go to the skill players, Southmoore also has a very talented offensive line. Brey Walker (6-5, 280, So.) is the leader of that group and will provide a good
amount of strength in the trenches.
DEFENSE Defensive end and Top 100 selection Noah Jones (6-4, 260, Sr.) will be the Sabercats’ leader on that side of the ball. Last season Jones, who already has the look of a Division I defensive end, made 72 tackles and seven sacks. Jones has already garned offers from Army, Navy, Kansas State and Tulsa among many others and will be looking to pick up even more with a better year this season. At outside linebacker look for Garrett Bennett (6-0, 195, Sr.) to make a big difference in the middle of the field. Last season Bennett had 43 tackles and three interceptions and will once again be key in both stopping the run and defending the pass. Finally on the back end look for Gervarrius Owens (6-2, 180, Jr.), Darrien Mack (5-9, 170, Jr.) and Quindon Lewis to be the team’s leaders in the secondary. Last season Owens made 88 tackles and had three sacks while Mack chipped in 42 tackles of his own. Lewis meanwhile made 27 tackles and had one interception. Overall head coach Jeremy Stark said he hopes to use last season’s accomplishments as a springboard for this season. “I am looking forward to building off our success towards the end of last season. With a large group of players with experience returning it is important that those guys learn and build from the ups and downs of last season,” Stark said.

Quick Hits: The Lions have not laid claim to Moore supremacy since 2001 when they last defeated Westmoore 35-13. Moore last finished with a winning record in 2004.
Moore owns one win against city rival Southmoore, besting the Sabercats 29-26 in the schools’ first ever meeting in 2008. Last 5 Years: 2014 - 0-10 2013 - 1-9 2012 - 2-8 2011 – 2-8 2010 – 0-10
OFFENSE The Moore Lions entered the 2014 campaign with one of the youngest rosters in Class 6A-I. They struggled all year, and failed to win a game. This season, however, the Lions return eight starters on the offensive side of the ball. “We have had a great offseason,” coach Paul Hix said. “We return a very talented junior class who should benefit from last season.” The Lions return all of their skill position players, plus quarterback Josh Detweiler (6-0, 175, Jr.). Detweiler
All-State History: Frank Thompson 1940 Tom Moore 1952 Dean Bass 1958 Gary Darnell 1965 Paul Sturdivant 1972 Jeff Ward 1973 Steve Trimble 1976 Terry Prichard 1984

Josh Detweiler made some mistakes as a sophomore, but he is poised to have a big season for the Lions with the talent he has around him. He threw for more than 2,000 yards, 13 touchdowns and 16 interceptions in 2014. If he can reduce the number of turnovers, the Lions will benefit greatly. His top threat KJ Carrethers (5-7, 145, Sr.) will play both wide receiver and running back. Last season as a junior, Carrethers ran for 407 yards and three touchdowns. He also hauled in 232 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Carrethers will be expected to play a larger role, and those numbers should increase significantly this season. Jordan Jones (6-3, 195, Sr.) will be another big target. The tight end caught 52 passes for 713 yards and seven touchdowns last season. Jones could easily get to 1,000 yards this season if he continues to improve. Darian Davis (5-10, 175, Jr.) missed most of his sophomore campaign due to injury, but this season he should see a lot of snaps. Abel Wills (6-1, 190, Jr.) will line up out wide, and will serve as Detweiler’s next receiver. Last season, as a sophomore, Wills caught 38 passes for 502 yards and a touchdown. He is a viable deep threat and should see more targets this season. DEFENSE Much of the Lions’ struggles in 2014 came on the defensive side of the

Paul Hix ball. With such a young roster, they struggled to stop opponents. After a rigorous offseason, the only place for the Lions to go is up. Six starters return to the defense. The headliner of that group is Keante Hawthorne (5-11, 170, Sr.), who will be the leader of the defense. Last season, Hawthorne intercepted four passes, recovered three fumbles and came up with 40 tackles. He is a hybrid player who can line up at strong safety, or move down to the outside linebacker position. Quentin Blue (6-0, 190, Sr.) will join Hawthorne in the secondary. Blue can play either safety position. He intercepted two passes and recorded 27 tackles last season. The Lions will have a deep linebacker corps in 2015. Colton Winters (6-0, 180, Jr.) and Dimeon Dunlap (6-0, 195, Jr.) are members of the talented junior class Hix mentioned. They will be expected to make major contributions this season. With so much attention on Westmoore and Southmoore, the Lions will have the opportunity to come out and surprise people.

Quick Hits: The Timberwolves are one of only two schools in the past decade to make a Class 6A final. Jenks handled Norman North 5220 in 2012 while Mustang was taken out by Union 33-7 in 2005. Watch out for a couple of promising sophomore defensive backs named Drake and Isaac Stoops. Yeah, that Stoops. Norman North has scored in double figures in 35 straight games, dating back to a 35-7 loss to Lawton in the first round of the 2011 playoffs. Last 5 Years: 2014 - 5-5, 2013 - 7-4 , 2012 - 12-2 2011 – 6-5, 2010 – 3-7
All-State History: Beau Blankenship 2007 Nathan Badger 2007 Bryce Easley 2008
DEFENSE The 3-4 scheme is the defense of the day for the Timberwolves. The big reason the team is working out of the 3-4 is Corey Tipsword (6-4, 320, Sr.). His massive presence inside will force teams to double him leaving holes in the offensive line for the linebackers. Tipsword was named to the VYPE Top 100 after his 2014 performance. Joining Tipsword up front is junior Gage Johnson (5-10, 290). The pair will make it difficult for the opposition to run the football. Last season Johnson recorded 18 tackles and made one sack as he shared time on the line. Junior linebacker Cade Mashburn (6-2, 195) recorded 62 tackles last season and should see an increase in his production this year. Mashburn has started turning heads in the recruiting world and should begin to see schools seeking his talents in the future. Jay Bobb (5-11, 200, Jr.) will play linebacker and safety depending on the opponent. Last year Bobb had 37 tackles in only five games. The defensive secondary features Jake Brewer (5-10, 175, Sr.) who recorded 25 tackles in 2014. Brewer will lead a young group of secondary players with a ton of talent.
Jude Richardson
OFFENSE The Timberwolves’ offense returns seven starters to the field this season. Two of those seven are VYPE Top 100 selectees. Running back Quan Hogan (6-1, 210, Sr.) rushed for 1,449 yards on 170 carries last season and scored 17 touchdowns in 10 games. Hogan’s production could increase this season thanks to a more veteran offensive line. Hogan is currently being pursued by several D1 football programs. Another VYPE Top 100 player and the anchor of that offensive line is Walker Reed (6-6, 300, Sr.). Reed has the size and skill to play at the next level. In the Timberwolves multiple spread offense Reed and the offensive line must give a new, inexperienced quarterback time to find the open man. Jude Richardson (6-2, 285, Sr.) and Jackson Denny (6-0, 280, Sr.) will team with Reed to not only make the Norman North line one of the biggest in Class 6A, but one of the more fundamentally sound groups in the class. Wide receiver Nathan Womack (6-0, 185, Sr.) caught 46 balls for 894 yards and 11 touchdowns last season in only nine games. Womack will benefit from that big offensive line giving the new

Quick Hits: 2014 marked the first losing season for the Tigers since finishing 4-6 in 2009.
The Tigers defeated Deer Creek 14-7 in the first ever meeting between the schools in week two of 2014, the Antlers will seek revenge this season on their home turf. Norman’s only playoff win in the past decade came against Yukon in 2012. Last 5 Years: 2 014 - 2-8 2013 - 5-5 2012 - 9-3 2011 – 7-4 2010 – 9-2

OFFENSE The Norman Tigers were unable to break out of their cage last season. On offense, they had trouble finding a consistent rhythm. This season, with only four starters returning, it will be a challenge to get the offense going, but coach Greg Nation has a plan to make up for some of their inexperience. He plans to use multiple formations and lots of motion to keep opposing defenses on their toes. This will be key for the Tigers’ young quarterback, Ryan Peoples (5-11, 170, So.), who is into his second year in the program and is the projected starter for the Tigers. Luckily for Peoples, the skill players he has around him will be able to take some of the pressure off of his shoulders. Dionte Defreeze (5-10, 210, Jr.) will serve as a power back, and he possesses the ability to break tackles. Easton Rider (6-1, 190, Jr.) will split time with Defreeze at the running back position. Rider is a speed back, who has the ability to easily make people miss with a spin move. On the offensive line, Jack Fronheiser (60, 235, Sr.) moves to the center position, and will anchor the crew up front. Fronheiser is one of the more experienced players on Nation’s roster. Hunt Sparks (6-4, 250, Jr.) will help protect the edge from the tackle position. Sparks made huge

strides as a sophomore, and will be expected to make some big blocks.
DEFENSE The Tigers will run a 4-2-5 scheme on defense this year. Nation has two goals on defense: create turnovers and tackle. These two areas will be the strengths of the Tiger defense. The front seven will be stout, with some big, talented guys on the defensive line. Elijah Smith (6-2, 290, Sr.), David Ray (6-0, 280, Jr.) and Romero Gatewood (6-0, 220, Sr.) will be plugging the running lanes and rushing the passer. These three guys will be the centerpieces for the Tiger defense. If they can consistently attack, it will give the secondary more chances to create turnovers. Justice Rendahl (6-0, 210, Jr.) is the anchor of the defensive unit. He roams the field as the middle linebacker, and will be expected to be the sharpest tackler on the roster. One of the more versatile players for the Tigers is Dillon Dougherty (5-9, 170, Jr.). He plays what coach Nation calls the Bandit position, which is a hybrid linebacker-safety position. His speed will help against both the run and the pass. These two made serious contributions as underclassmen, and now will be expected to step up as leaders. Nation said he wanted stronger defensive pursuit from his guys, and his linebackers will be expected to lead by example.

Mustang Nation Q&A The Pulse of StangNation We are excited and well prepared for having a target on our back like we do and we are ready to do what it takes to win. Anything short of bringing a championship to Mustang will be a disappointing season for me. VYPE: What player is the funniest guy in your locker room? What player is the guy who goes the hardest in the weight room and practice?
Bryce Roberts VYPE sits down with a duo of Mustang stars to talk all things football and a little bit of everything else Chandler Garrett Bryce Roberts VYPE: What are your personal goals for this season?
Garrett: My goal is to be the best leader and quarterback I can be for the Mustang Broncos. Roberts: To be a great leader for my team by leading by example and going above and beyond on the field, in the weight room, and the classroom. Definitely winning a championship at the end of the season as well.
VYPE: Everyone is talking about how Mustang is the team to beat on the west side of the state. How does that make you feel and is there a sense that if you don't at least make the finals that this year will be a disappointment? Garrett: It feels good but we know preseason rankings don’t really mean anything; but we are for sure aiming for a state championship and anything less than that will be an extreme disappointment. Roberts: The team has worked very hard to get into the position we're in.
Garrett: I would say Caden Arthur a.k.a. Noodles is the funniest. I would say Bobby Brown is one of the hardest workers but our whole team works pretty hard honestly.
Roberts: The funniest guy in our locker room would definitely have to be Bobby Brown, he always says something off the wall and comes back fast. The hard worker in the weight room and practice is a toss up between our other tight end Blake Williams and our quarterback Chandler Garrett. VYPE: Do you have a pregame ritual? If so, what is it? Garrett: Drive around town listening to Drake with a couple of teammates getting ready to go do work later that night.
Roberts: I consider every player the same, they're all trying to keep me from reaching my goal and stop me. I can’t let that happen. VYPE: Best movie you have seen recently?
Garrett: I would say my favorite movie here lately that I’ve seen would be Southpaw. Roberts: Best movie I have ever seen would hands down have to be Southpaw. VYPE: What is the best thing about playing football at Mustang?
Garrett: Probably everyone that looks up to you and supports you throughout the whole community. It’s a football town and I wouldn’t want to play anywhere else. StangNation!!! Roberts: It’s the family atmosphere. Its a football town. We are brothers on and off the field. We have each other's back and hold each and every person accountable.
Roberts: Yes, I have a pregame ritual. I always go on the field about an hour or two before the game, sit by the field goal post, and just look around the stadium and listen to music. VYPE: Is there a player on another team you like to compete against? Why? Garrett: I enjoy playing against other top ranked guys. It’s always fun to compete with other great players.

Mustang has won 75 games in the past 10 years. That is the highest total of any school on the west side of the state in 6A-I, three more than the Westmoore Jaguars.
The Broncos have also made more semifinals appearances than any other west side team in 6A-I this past decade. Mustang earned its way to the Final Four in 2014, 2008 and 2005. Chandler Garrett a junior has caught the eye of many college recruiters. “We are really excited about this year’s team. We have a group of seniors that have been used to making playoff runs and young players that are showing quick improvements,” said coach Jeremy Dombek. Tight end Bryce Roberts (6-6, 235, Sr.) figures into the passing attack as his size and athleticism will come into play in certain situations. Dylan Doran (5-7, 165, Sr.) and Miles McFadden (5-7, 160, Sr.) run the tough crossing and out routes that Garrett will need to complete to move the chains. “Experience is the key for us in 2015. Along with the five mentioned players, look for Mason Brown and Bobby Brown to have break out years. Although we lost a great running back in Chase Brown, we have two guys with a lot of experience returning in Aaron Kinchion and Terran Daniel. Both were
Bryce Roberts
DEFENSE Eight players are back to the defensive side of the ball in 2015. Cole Daniel (5-10, 210, Sr.) returns as one of the team’s leading tacklers from his linebacker position. Daniel recorded 84 tackles, two sacks and two interceptions last season. His partner in crime is Kaden Truelove (5-10, 205, Sr.) who had 87 tackles and four sacks. The pair will roam the center of the field and could be used in blitz packages designed to keep the offensive line guessing. Defensive end Deontre Thomas (6-3, 265, Jr.) was a monster at end last year bagging nine sacks and 60 tackles. Thomas is near impossible to get around and forces teams to look inside. The secondary is strong with Keante Miles (5-9, 175, Sr.) and Carter Reece (6-0, 170, Jr.). Miles grabbed four interceptions last season and would love to increase that number this season. “Same theme as the offense, we love our experience. We have to stay healthy on defense and developing some depth is key. Both inside linebackers are going on their third year as starters. We return all four guys in the secondary and have a really nice anchor in Thomas as end,” said Dombek. The biggest issue for Mustang may be depth and the kicking game. But look for this team to make big plays and be in the hunt come November.
Dylan Doran
Even though Thomas is still in the early stages of her high school career she has already earned a starting spot for one of the best programs in the state and the current defending Class 6A champion. Thomas is also a natural born leader and already has a host of goals for herself and her team.
“I have a lot of goals. I want to be the best teammate, win our conference, win our Mustang sophomore Kaitlyn regional tournament, hit Thomas is a player that is sure to for a higher batting average, be make noise on the field this year. the best outfielder defensively,

Quick Hits: Athletic Director David Fisher snagged a Hawkeye when Bill Young returned to the collegiate ranks after one season as the head coach at Yukon. Brian Sauser comes all the way from Iowa City, West High to lead the Millers in 2015. Yukon ended a three-game losing streak against Norman in week eight of 2014, crushing the Tigers 37-7.
The Millers have recorded only two winning campaigns in the past 16 seasons. Those came in succession from 2010 to 2011. Last 5 Years: 2014 - 4-6 2013 - 6-5 2012 - 5-6 2011 – 7-4 2010 – 8-3
OFFENSE It’s a well-known fact that Yukon has some of the best facilities in the state. This year the Millers hope to also make it a well-known fact that they are one of the best teams in the state. Offensively, making that goal happen will start with building around a very seasoned and talented line, all while developing their young skill players. “We are young and deep at many of our skill positions with a veteran offensive line. Even though we do lack the varsity experience at those skill spots we feel very good about the potential and depth throughout those positions,” head coach Brian Sauser said. “We have also had a really great offseason working to simplify and speed the game up on offense. Our kids have done a great job really learning

will be the man the Millers turn to for the most production up front as he leads the defensive line. Finally expect McGee to make a good amount of plays in the secondary starting at safety along with his starting role as a wide receiver on offense. “We are excited and cautiously optimistic about the upcoming season. We also realize heading into our second year in 6A-I that our schedule will present a challenge every week of the season; there are no easy games,” Sauser said. “Our offseason work ethic and attention to detail was outstanding and we realize that every phase of our program over the course of 12 months has to be conducted at a high level in order to be successful on the field.”

and executing tempo offense and we are excited about the direction we are going on the offensive side of the ball.” Leading Yukon’s vaunted offensive line will be center DJ Taylor (6-0, 265, Sr.) and guard Kyle Menge (6-1, 290, Sr.). Both players have a good amount of varsity experience and the nasty streak coaches look for in their offensive linemen. Running back Caleb Davis (5-10, 185, Sr.) is the team’s top returning skill player. In his junior season Davis ran for 53 yards on limited carries but did catch nine passes for 189 yards. Other key skill players Yukon will count on this year are wide receiver Daunte McGee (6-4, 195, Jr.) and running back Michael Cooper (5-9, 160, Jr.). DEFENSE On the defensive side of the ball the Millers will be slightly more experienced, bringing back five starters from a year ago. Running a 4-3 Cover 4 defense, installed by previous coach Bill Young, the Millers will look to attack the football and force opponents to turn the ball over. Leading the Millers on defense will be a talented trio of linebackers. Chief among that group is the team’s defensive anchor Cooper Stanley (6-1, 185, Sr.). Completing the trio are Ryan Andraszek (6-1, 190, Sr.) and Jaden Gilmore (510, 180, Sr.). JT Kearby (6-1, 245, Sr.)

Oklahoma Christian makes formal move into NCAA Division II under the NCAA banner will be Sept. 3, when the men's soccer team will visit Ouachita Baptist (Ark.) and the women's soccer team will visit Newman (Kan.).
Maci Rich Oklahoma Christian will begin a new era of athletic competition in 2015-16, as the university has been approved for full membership in NCAA Division II after a three-year transition process. Starting immediately, the university's teams are eligible for NCAA and Heartland Conference postseason competition. The Lady Eagles and Eagles will be able to compete in conference tournaments and earn automatic or at-large bids into Division II regional and national tournaments and meets. OC's membership officially begins Sept. 1, and the first two OC athletic events
During the 2012-13 academic year, OC began competing as a member of the Heartland Conference, a Division II league with 11 member schools in Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas and Texas. Among the more than 300 Division II members nationwide are 10 full members in Oklahoma, including many of OC’s primary rivals.
Bryant Keirns - Roberto Diaz
OC Athletic Director Curtis Janz said everyone in the athletic department understands the university’s teams now must compete at a higher level, but with the strong character of OC’s coaches and student-athletes, the Lady Eagles and Eagles will build on recent successes against Division II competition.
OC’s cross country and soccer teams will
be the first to enjoy the opportunity for Heartland and Division II postseason qualification. There are high hopes in particular for the men’s cross country squad, which should be a contender not only for conference honors but for a high finish within the Division II South Central Region, the NCAA’s toughest in that sport.
OC’s squad will be led by 2013 Heartland individual champion Roberto Diaz, who redshirted in 2014, and by fellow senior Bryant Keirns, the Heartland individual runner-up each of the past two years. The 2014 Heartland freshman of the year, Sisay Gillock, also should be a key returnee, along with a pair of runners who have earned Heartland all-conference honors, senior Brennym Kaelin and junior Evan Durrill. Senior Timothy Zuercher is another key distance specialist for the Eagles. On the women’s side, juniors Maci Rich, Layne Hammer, Katie Jones and Sarah Cobb and senior Tara Lewis provide a solid base for a building cross country program.
In soccer, the Eagles will be led by all-conference forward Ante Susic and former Norman North star striker Brandon Little Axe, while the Lady Eagles’ top returnees will be senior defender Areli Bermudez Delgado and sophomore forward Madeline Roseke. A U G U S T- S E P T E M B E R 2 0 1 5

Casady’s Athletics Department has a new leader at the helm. Steve McCarthy has joined the School as Director of Athletics and Physical Education. He took some time out of preseason practices to share more about himself.
Q: Why were you interested in the Athletics Director position at Casady? A: Casady is the most likeminded school to Cistercian in the conference. I felt with the strong academics and the strong athletic program already in place it was a great fit for me.
Steve McCarthy Coach McCarthy is no stranger to the Cyclone program since he has been with SPC schools throughout his educational and athletic career. After 15 years at Cistercian Preparatory School in Irving, Texas, Coach McCarthy accepted the position to move to Oklahoma City this summer. He was the head football coach, head track and field coach, and middle division baseball coach at Cistercian, while teaching computer technology, health, and Physical Education. Coach McCarthy is a collaborative, passionate, and motivating leader, and is most familiar with the unique qualities of the SPC and the pre-eminent importance of strong academics. He is a proven winner with an appropriate administrative skill set.

Q: What enticed you to take the position and make the move north?
A: I felt after 24 years as a coach it was time to do something new. Taking over a program that Coaches Virgil Grantham, Jim Bonfiglio, and Steve Shelley have built, was an honor that I could not pass up. Having watched these men in action and coached against these men I felt it was a privilege to be chosen to follow in their footsteps. Q: Tell us a little about your background and your family.
A: I began at Cistercian in 1991 coaching middle school football, basketball, and track. At the high school level, I coached football, track, and one year of baseball before I became the head track coach in my third year. In 1995 I became Cistercian’s defensive co-
ordinator. My first head coaching job was at The Oakridge School in Arlington, Texas, in 1999, but, sadly, in the spring of 2000 Coach Tom Hillary at Cistercian passed away of Leukemia. Fr. Peter called me to ask if I would be interested in returning to Cistercian to be the head football coach. I was honored to follow in the footsteps of Coach Hillary who was my mentor. In my 15 years as head coach, my team had 13 winning seasons, two DII SPC Championships, two runner-up finishes, 71 All SPC players, and 19 players who have gone on to play college football at DI and DII levels. Sixteen years later I have the honor again to follow in the footsteps of an incredible leader here at Casady. Q: As a long-time Cyclone competitor, what are the strengths of Casady's program that you saw from the other sideline? A: From the outside looking in, you see a program that plays hard and is well-respected for their effort and sportsmanship. Casady is not one of the big schools, but Casady always competes like it is one. There is a school pride of honor and respect for athletics that is displayed by the student-athletes who represent the School.
Q: What are your goals for Casady's Athletics program? A: I would like to continue to build on what Coach Grantham, Coach Bonfiglio, and Coach Shelley have done here. With the help of the great coaching staff that we have in place, we will continue to build strong athletic and physical education programs and continue to develop well-rounded young people who will make a difference in the world.
Congratulations and good luck to all Casady student athletes.
Casady School welcomes Steve McCarthy as Director of Athletics and Physical Education At Casady, we believe competitive athletics and physical education are central to the development of leadership and teamwork as well as self-confidence and respect for others. Our students are participants rather than simply spectators. Casady provides healthy and competitive opportunities that are critical to developing an appreciation for wellness and fitness in each student.

IRISH OFFENSE The Irish return eight starters from last years team that had four games last year where they scored 40 points or more. Returning quarterback Jacob Mullins (6-2, 190, Sr.) passed for 1,695 yards and 11 touchdowns a season ago. Now with a year under his belt, Mullins should be more comfortable in the pocket and a better player under pressure. Helping to relieve that pressure is running back Zach Segell (5-8, 160, Jr.) who rushed for 1,130 yards and 12 touchdowns. The passing game will have more continuity with the return of Rubell Goe (6-2, 190, Jr.) and Alec Minielly (6-1, 180, Sr.). Goe accounted for 605 yards and 10 touchdowns in his sophomore campaign, while Minielly recorded 228 yards and a touchdown of his own. Up front the Irish will look to junior center Emory Winter (5-11, 230) to call assignments and help younger linemen mature and understand the offensive line scheme. Depth may be an issue on the offensive line, but if younger player can mature and become solid blocks after the first three games, the Irish could develop into a fundamentally sound unit up front.
Schedule: Sept. 4 – at Shawnee Photo by Michael Mayberry Sept. 11 – vs. Bishop Kelley Sept. 18 – vs. Weatherford Sept. 25 – at Guthrie Oct. 2 – vs. Deer Creek Oct. 8 – at Southeast Oct. 15 – vs. Carl Albert Oct. 23 – at Guymon Oct. 30 – vs. Western Heights Nov. 6 – at Piedmont
Quick Hits: The Irish orchestrated a little revenge against arch-rival Bishop Kelley with a 16-14 week two win. That avenged a two-point loss to the Comets in 2014.
McGuinness suffered a 40-point setback to Ardmore in the first round of the playoffs. That is the greatest margin of defeat in the past twenty years. The Irish have defeated Western Heights the past three seasons by a combined margin of 163-12
DEFENSE Nine players return to the field for the Irish on defense. Leading the way is safety Hunter Voss (62, 180, Sr.). Voss has 247 career tackles and three interceptions to his credit. Voss is one of the more talented secondary players in the class. Joining him in the secondary is corner Trevor Raczkowski (510, 165, Sr.). Raczkowski accounted for 58 tackles and four interceptions last year. The linebackers may be the strength of the defense this season. Led

Conor Maguire by senior Conor Maguire (5-10, 195) and junior Clay Morris (5-10, 185), the Irish will look to stop the run and force teams to make long first downs through the air. Davis Lauderdale (5-10, 185, Jr.) and Joseph Kusbel (5-10, 200, Sr.) round out the 3-4 defense at linebacker. Lauderdale grabbed 111 tackles and 3.5 sacks last year, while Kusbel logged 49 tackles and 1.5 sacks. This group of linebackers are going to cause problems for teams trying to run the football. Look for defensive end Alex Narvaez (6-0, 220, Sr.) to accumulate the sacks again this season after notching five last year. Fellow defensive end Tyler Kippenberger (6-3, 245, Sr.) is a big end that can set the corner and force everything inside. Overall this team is ready for a tough district schedule and should make the playoffs.
DOUGLASS TROJANS
OFFENSE In their first year in Class 3A, the Douglass Trojans saw a lot of success. They finished in second place in their district before making it to the quarterfinals of the state tournament. This season, the Trojans are poised to make an even deeper run after losing only three total starters from last year’s team. Coach Willis Alexander knows what it will take for his guys to reach their goal. “We have to remain healthy and develop quality depth among the whole team,” Alexander said. “Offensively, we have a chance to be explosive. Our players have valuable playing experience.” In Alexander’s basic pro offense, an efficient quarterback is vital. Luckily for him, he has just that in VYPE Top 100 selectee Patrick McKaufman (6-5, 195, Sr.). He has 5,014 passing yards and 51 touchdowns over the course of his career. Expect him to have his best season yet. Up front, the Trojans have an experienced offensive line. Kasey Wagoner (6-4, 285, Sr.) is the anchor of the

unit, and Dominique Jones (6-2, 260, Sr.) is a three-year starter. These two will lead the way and open up lanes for running back Anthony Jackson (5-8, 170, Sr.). Jackson gained 1,870 yards and 16 touchdowns on the ground last season.
DEFENSE Alexander’s nasty 4-3 defense is only losing two starters from last year’s team, but many contributing players are returning. Much like the offense, many of his defensive players have valuable playing experience. Depth will be key for the Trojan defense. “Our success will rely on the development of our depth,” Alexander said. “We need our off field growth to transfer on to the field.” VYPE Top 100 selectee Xavier Mason (6-2, 260, Sr.) is the focal point of the defense. He’s an absolute beast from the defensive end position. Last season, he finished with 88 tackles, 12 sacks, one fumble recovery and four forced fumbles. He has 28 sacks over his career. Darius Hawkins (5-10, 175, Jr.) can lock down opposing receivers, as his 34 tackles, 17 passes defended and three interceptions indicate. Dajon Wilkins (5-9, 175, Sr.) will be the leader of the linebacker corp after recording 95 tackles and four sacks as a junior.

John Marshall head coach chatted with VYPE to discuss coaching and what it’s like to be a coach. to join your staff?
VYPE: How did you end up getting the job at John Marshall? Did you apply or did you know somebody? Woods: Well I had applied at Southeast and a few other places but I didn’t get any of those. So, the John Marshall administrator saw my résumé and he gave me a call. After talking to him I said ‘Why not’ and went for it. They hadn’t had much success so I decided to take the job.
VYPE: Are there any coaches from your college or professional days you try to emulate? Woods: Every coach. The main guys are coach (Les) Miles and coach (Mike) Gundy. Everything I do is from those guys. Coach Miles taught great work ethic and how to be a student-athlete. Coach Gundy was great with communication and he taught me how to be a leader. I learned a lot from those guys. VYPE: How did you convince guys like Billy Bajema, Derrick Lock and your brother Donovan 38

Woods: I let them know about the vision that I had and the importance they have to the young guys. They get to teach kids how to play football and they get to see the results on the field. Getting to be a part of something important was big to them. The main thing was the vision. When I told them my plan and what I wanted to do here at John Marshall, it was easy for them to buy in. VYPE: What type of influence has the coaching staff had on your players?
Woods: They have taught them how to be winners, leaders and overall high quality guys. The kids get to learn from guys who are masters at their craft. They help the kids see that no matter what background you are from, you can make it to the next level. A lot of these kids want to play football at the next level, and these guys really show them what they’re learning. The kids get to see the progress and results that motivates them to continue to get better. VYPE: How have you handled the dynamic of having former pros on your staff? Has it been a challenge? Woods: Not at all. It’s been similar to the dynamic I had as a player. Everyone knows his role, how it fits into the initial vision and then I take it from there. It’s
all about the plan and everybody doing their part. The guys on my staff have been great at that because they have been a part of it in the past. They know how to be a part of a team, and more importantly, how to lead. VYPE: What’s the best part of coaching in your opinion?
Woods: It’s fun. That’s the bottom line. I don’t consider it a job. I love mentoring kids. I might not be the best English teacher, but once I’m on the field, I can teach anybody how to play football. I can teach kids leadership and how to conduct themselves as a studentathlete, and that’s the best part of being a football coach.

JOHN MARSHALL BEARS OFFENSE Under the guidance of Rashaun Woods the John Marshall Bears have done nothing but improve. Last season that improvement continued as the Bears went 8-2 in the regular season and made it to the Class 3A playoffs. Unfortunately the Bears saw their playoff run end after just one game with a 39-7 first round loss to eventual semifinalist Kingfisher. This season the Bears not only want to put together a strong regular season but also want to take the next step and put together a deep playoff run. On offense, accomplishing those goals start with 10 returning starters. Lenard Leviston III (5-11, 180, Sr.) will start at quarterback for the Bears and be responsible for distributing the ball to a talented group of playmakers. Two of those playmakers will line up in the backfield this year with Devonte Lee (5-10, 210, So.) and Keyshawn Shells (5-11, 210, Jr.) both getting a share of the carries. Shells will also split wide at receiver this year when the Bears go to a one back or no back set. Other players to look for on the outside this
year will be London Matthews (6-0, 165, Sr.) and Maleke Hall (6-3, 173, Sr.).
DEFENSE On defense the Bears return a large sleuth this season to a unit that gave up just 18.1 points per game a year ago. Tramonda Moore (6-4, 350, Sr.) will lead the John Marshall defense this season. Moore has already garnered college attention picking up offers from Grambling State and Montana. Also working on the defensive line this year will be Gregg Brown (5-11, 285, So.). Chad Gerretta (6-0, 230, Sr.) will also be a part of the John Marshall front seven starting at linebacker. On the back end of the defense Elijah Jackson (5-10, 180, Sr.) will get the nod at safety while Justin Broiles (6-0, 180, Jr.) will start at cornerback. Competing in a district with top teams like Blanchard, Bethany, meeker and fellow Oklahoma City public school Douglass the Bears will need to play at the highest level nearly every week.

Quick Hits: The streak is over!! Choctaw made the playoffs for the first time since 1974, finishing 3rd in the district. The party, however, was short-lived. Booker T. Washington eliminated the Yellowjackets in the first round. The Yellowjackets fielded the most prolific offense in school history, scoring 33.6 per contest in 2014.
Choctaw’s seven wins in 2014 equaled one-third of the victories of the past nine years. Last 5 Years: 2014 - 7-4 2013 - 3-7 2012 - 1-8 2011 – 1-9 2010 – 3-7
OFFENSE Last season the Choctaw offense put up points in bunches, scoring an average of 33.6 points per game. Repeating those numbers this year may be a bit of a challenge this year with only three returning starters but head coach Todd Dilbeck believes his team is up for that challenge. Running back Tyrel Bell (5-10, 205, Jr.) is chief among the Choctaw skill players ready to step up and lead this year. A home run threat any time he touches the ball, Bell ran for 974 yards and also had 316 receiving yards as a sophomore.

Sean Thompson Offensive linemen Lonell Burris (6-4, 250, Sr.) and Eric Liggins (6-2, 250, Sr.) will be the team’s leaders in the trenches. Dilbeck said that he feels his team is up to the challenge of replacing so many offensive starters and that the three players mentioned above will play a key role in that. “We will run a typical spread offense and we’ll lean heavy on the run game early on as we try to figure out which quarterback will take the reins of the offense. Tyrel gives us a big time threat in the backfield and Lonell and Eric provide stability up front,” Dilbeck said. DEFENSE While the offense will be searching to replace a lot of key players the defense will be a very experienced group with seven returning starters. On the defensive line Burris will start at defensive end after recording 72 tackles and four tackles for loss last season. Dustin Broughton (6-1, 245, Sr.) will also start on the defensive line at getting the nod at tackle. A year ago Broughton made 84 tackles and also had four sacks. Broughton be looking to do even more damage this year. At middle linebacker Adam Lambert (6-0, 215, Sr.) will be the Yellowjackets’ unquestioned leader in the middle of the defense. As a junior, Lambert

made 109 tackles and could better that production this year in his senior campaign. Finally in the secondary the Yellowjackets will be very experienced with Sean Thompson (5-10, 175, Sr.) and Shandon Overstreet (5-6, 155, Sr.) patrolling the back end. A player that is all over the field, Thompson made 104 tackles last year; which was up from his 87 tackles as a sophomore. Overstreet meanwhile made 52 tackles last season and also had three tackles for loss. Overall coach Dilbeck said that this year his team will be looking to build on their successes from last year and make an even deeper playoff run. “We’re looking to build off the momentum created by our playoff run a year ago. We did something that hasn’t been done in Choctaw in 30 years by making the playoffs and we don’t want it to be another 30 years before we see them again,” Dilbeck said.

Quick Hits: The Bombers have won 14 out of the last 20 against Del City, including a 49-6 shellacking last year at Rose Field.
The top two defenses from a year ago will clash in week one when the Bombers travel to Booker T. Washington. Midwest City held its opponents to a mere 13.1 points per game in 2014. Stillwater and Midwest City have staged quite a series the past three seasons. All three contests have been decided by ten points or less with two of the decisions going the Bombers way. Brendan Brown OFFENSE A year ago the Midwest City Bombers came into the season with more hype around them than some small college teams. While the Bombers had what most would consider a successful season going 7-3 and making the Class 6A-II playoffs, it wasn’t the end Midwest City had hoped for after a first round playoff loss to Sand Springs. This season the Bombers are back and ready to make some noise again with an offense focused on a power running game and a timely passing attack. Goodman meanwhile, is primarily a linebacker who got 98 carries and ran for 781 yards and 10 touchdowns. On the outside look for wide receiver Drew Wright (5-6, 145, Sr.) and Jacob Williams (5-10, 160, Sr.) to be the Bombers top two targets in the passing game. Wright runs a 4.4 40-yard dash and is also a kick returner and punt returner for the Bombers and averaged 26.4 yards per return last year. Rounding out the offense’s key returners this year will be quarterback Brendan Brown (6-4, 200, Sr.). An athletic player, Brown threw for 2,100 yards and 20 touchdowns as a junior. DEFENSE “The most legally violent defense in all of Oklahoma.” That’s what the Bombers say about their defensive unit and it’s something they impress on their opponents every Friday night. Goodman leads the defense from his spot at linebacker after making 139 tackles last year, recording two sacks and intercepting one pass. Working in front of Goodman on the defensive line will be defensive tackle Worren Davis (6-2, 284, Sr.) and defensive end Maurice McLendon (6-5, 215, Jr.). A year ago Davis spent a good deal of time knifing into opposing backfields recording eight sacks while also making 81 tackles. safety for the Bombers with Fields starting at free safety. The third member of the group, Gatewood, will be a nickel hybrid for the Bombers and is already drawing attention from several college programs. As a program that always walks around with a bullseye on its back coach Darrell Hall and the rest of the Midwest City coaching staff are preaching the philosophy of “Work hard and good things will happen.” With that philosophy in mind the Bombers believe they are once again strong contenders or a 6A-II gold ball.

Schedule: Sept. 4 – at El Reno Sept. 11 – at Midwest City Sept. 18 – vs. Duncan Sept. 26 – vs. Western Heights Oct. 2 – at Guymon Oct. 9 – vs. Piedmont Oct. 15 – at McGuinness Oct. 23 – at Deer Creek Oct. 30 – vs. Guthrie Nov. 6 – vs. Southeast
Quick Hits: The Titans failed to win a playoff game for only the third time in the past decade.
Carl Albert is no stranger to playing a difficult non-district schedule. The Titans dropped their third straight to a team from Class 6A, losing 18-0 to Midwest City. The Titans have not logged a double digit winning season since 2009. Last 5 Years: 2014 - 7-4 2013 - 9-3 2012 – 9-5 2011 – 9-2 2010 – 9-3
OFFENSE The strength of the Titans offense may be their offensive line. Tyler Banta (6-4, 280, Sr.) is a D1 type lineman with offers to play on Saturday. Banta was selected to the VYPE Top 100 and will anchor an offensive line that features two more solid players in Blake Blanton (6-5, 202, Sr.) and Branton Swanner (6-1, 226, Jr.). The trio will work to protect

quarterback Braxton Dickerson (6-3, 209, Sr.). Dickerson threw for nearly 1,000 yards last year and could see those numbers increase in 2015 if junior receiver Braden Pursell (5-11, 184) has a solid season. Pursell could play both ways, but figures heavily into the offensive scheme. “We have a chance to be improved from the 7-4 finish last year. Productive work in the summer and preseason are required to make that happen,” said head coach Gary Rose. Depth is always an issue at certain positions. Several new running backs and receivers have shown promise in spring practice. Their maturation and understanding of the offense will help Dickerson become more comfortable in the pocket and in pressure situations.
Steven Thompson 2012 Caleb Holland 2012 Kyler Walker 2012 Robert Lolofie 2013 Stevie Thompson 2013 Tyler Banta 2014 *Oklahoman All-State Selections
Tyler Banta In the secondary the Titans feature Marque Luster (5-8, 172, Sr.) at corner. Luster had 28 tackles last season, but wants to add a few interceptions to his stat line in 2015. Luster will bounce to the offensive side of the ball and play receiver. Mitchell and Benefee will also play offense at running back and tight end respectively. In a district loaded with teams looking to be the new champ, the Titans have the talent to compete and win. One thing District 5A-2 has learned over the years; you never count out coach Gary Rose and the Carl Albert. Titans.
DEFENSE Five returning starters dot the defense and leading the way is linebacker Mike Mitchell (5-10, 186, Sr.). His aggressive style of play can set the tone for the Titans defensively. Joining Mitchell is Pace Benefee (5-11, 201, Sr.) at linebacker. Benefee recorded 108 tackles and four sacks last season. “We are smallish and quick on defense, but we’ll play more aggressive,” said Rose. R.T. Sherman (5-9, 176, Jr.) rounds out the linebacker corps in the 4-3 scheme the Ti-tans will run this season. Defensive tackle Lamar Scott-Johnson (5-9, 211, Jr.) will look to add to his 57 tackles he notched last season as a sopho® more. Scott-Johnson must be the AUTO • HOME • LIFE run stopper the Titans need in the middle of that defensive line.

Del City has defeated Duncan in each of the past three seasons. The Eagles knocked off the Demons 19-7 last year at Haliburton Stadium. The Eagles suffered a 43-point loss to Midwest City in week three. It was the largest loss by Del City in what has been a very closely contested rivalry, in the past twenty years. 5 Years: 2014 - 6-6, 2013 - 7-4, 012 – 9-2 2011 – 1-9, 2010 – 5-5

OFFENSE The biggest school in terms of enrollment in Class 5A, the Del City Eagles are a team with a boatload of talent. A year ago that talent took the Eagles to the 5A quarterfinals, and this year head coach Nick Warehime hopes it takes his team even further. On the offensive side of the ball the Eagles return seven starters led by quarterback and VYPE Top 100 selection Terry Wilson (6-3, 195, Sr.) who is already committed to Nebraska. A lean and athletic player, Wilson can use his feet to extend plays but always keeps his head downfield looking for the open man. Last year Wilson used those skills to throw for 2,800 yards and this season hopes to eclipse the 3,000 yard mark. When Wilson does drop back to pass expect his two top targets to be receivers Sean Talley (6-0, 170, Sr.) and Andrew Hill (6-0, 170, Sr.). Last season Talley caught five touchdown passes while Hill caught four of his own. Offensive tackle Jerimiah Wilson (6-4, 280, Sr.) and offensive guard Walter Watson (6-2, 270, Sr.) will be the two leaders on the offensive line tasked with protecting their talented quarterback and keeping him upright in the pocket. Watson is also a Top 100 player and will play both ways this year, also starting at defensive tackle.

DEFENSE Running a base 3-3-5 defense that returns a whopping eight starters from a year ago the Eagles will look to be an aggressive attacking defense with players who aren’t afraid to put their face in the fan. Last year the Eagles gave up an average of 30.6 points per game and will definitely be looking to lower that number this year. On the line look for nose guard Devin Grendel (5-11, 260, Jr.) to lead the way. As the late, great Jim Croce would put it Grendel is “meaner than a junkyard dog” a quality that comes in handy battling in the trenches. Working in the middle of the defense this year for the Eagles will be linebackers Thumper Kirk (5-10, 225, Sr.) and Matt Lamb (6-0, 205, Sr.). Last season Lamb was the Eagles leading tackler and this season Warehime is expecting that and more from his senior defensive star. In the secondary strong safety AJon Reeves (6-3, 190, Sr.) will be a big difference maker as will free safety Cecil Cole (6-1, 175, Jr.). In a district containing top teams like Ardmore, Altus and of course last year’s 5A state champion Lawton MacArthur a lot of pressure will be put on the Eagles defense to succeed. If that defense can hold up in the face of so many top offenses then expect the Eagles to fly deep into the playoffs this season.

Chris Potts OFFENSE Entering the second season of two divisions of Class 6A football, the Patriots enter the 2015 campaign with expectations of being in the postseason chatter as six starters return to the offensive unit for head coach Rocky Martin. Continuing to employ its hurry up offensive game plan, a talented group of junior playmakers will be called upon to create highlight reel excitement. Leading the way will be quarterback Trey Gooch (6-5, 215, Jr.), who gained invaluable experience a year ago and completed 55 percent of his passing attempts while totaling 651 yards. Balancing the offensive numbers will be Jordan Ealy (6-0, 185, Jr.), who rushed for 437 yards as a sophomore. The Patriots receiver corps has the talents to stretch the field where Chris Potts (6-2, 185, Jr.) and Harrison Thornton (6-2, 190, Jr.) will be primary targets for Gooch when the Patriots put the ball in the air. Passing game protection and run blocking strengths will be

Quick Hits: If you like consistency, you will like the Panthers. Putnam North is a dead even 52-52 the past 10 years.
Putnam North’s last playoff win came in 2004. Junior Sam Bradford and the Panthers beat Stillwater 26-10 in the second round before dropping a semi-final heart-breaker to Jenks.
Putnam North is the reigning PC schools champion, taking the crown for the second time in three seasons. Last 5 Years: 2014 - 4-6, 2013 - 4-6, 2012 - 6-5 2011 – 4-6, 2010 – 4-6
Virgil Harris OFFENSE Keeping up with the rest of Class 6A-1 is the goal for the Panthers this year and with five returning starters on offense that may look like a challenge to people on the outside looking in. Yet, head coach Rod Richardson knows that you build an offense by starting on the offensive line and that is where the Panthers have the most experience. Larger than life offensive tackle Andre Harris Jr. (6-4, 280, Jr.) leads that group after starting 10 games last year. Experience continues to permeate the line with offensive guards Dalton Freshour (6-1, 254, Jr.) and Donald Sterns (6-0, 250, Jr.) who both also started in all 10 games last season. Tight end Randy Lollis (6-3, 250, Sr.) is another player who will definitely help with the blocking scheme but will also be a big target in the passing attack. Last season Lollis caught eight passes for 149 yards. Another key target in the passing game will be receiver Tyrell Stewart (60, 200, Sr.). As a junior Stewart caught 13 passes for 155 yards and two touchdowns.
DEFENSE Putnam City West, the only one of the district’s three high schools playing in Division II of Class 6A football, will do battle with its PC rivals weeks two and three after opening the 2015 schedule at home against Del City. Defensively, the Patriots will return only three starters from last year. Despite the lack of starting experience, Martin expects an aggressive group of players to take the field. Sebron Downing (6-2, 240, Sr.), who recorded 60 tackles last season, enters his third season in the starting lineup in the Patriots 3-4 alignment. Adding muscle to the line of scrimmage control will be Altus Barnett (6-2, 250, Jr.) at defensive tackle. Donarius James (5-10, 165, Sr.), who made 36 tackles last season, returns for his third and final season in the starting secondary unit along with Tyon Davis (5-10, 150, Jr.). Manning the middle will be Harrison Thornton (6-2, 190, Jr.) at linebacker that Martin expects to bring a headhunter’s style of play. “Last year’s rookies are this season’s veterans,” said Martin referring to the number of players on the Patriots’ roster with experience under the Friday night lights. “We have same talented kids that are excited about the 2015 season ready to play hard on every snap. Our offseason training and spring ball workouts have prepared us to continue our game plan for success.” DEFENSE On the defensive side of the ball the Panthers bring back six starters from a year ago and will look to be very solid on the defensive line and at linebacker. That front seven will be key this year as Putnam City North squares off against strong rushing attacks from Union, Southmoore, and Owasso all in their district. Anchoring the defensive line will be Jamal Barkus (6-2, 265, Sr.) at defensive tackle. A year ago Barkus made 43 tackles and had six tackles for loss along with two sacks. Legend Fears (5-10, 220, Jr.) is another player that will line up on the defensive line for the Panthers this year splitting his time between defensive tackle and defensive end. Finally look for Virgil Harris (6-0, 225, Jr.) to also get some time at defensive end this year but also drop back to linebacker at some times depending on the situation. As sophomores both Fears and Harris had strong seasons with Fears making 30 tackles, two tackles for loss and recording one sack. Meanwhile Harris finished with 24 tackles and three sacks. Strong safety Noah Wells (6-0, 189, Sr.) and linebacker Zaine Jackson (5-8, 184, Sr.) will both add a dose of senior leadership to the mix for the Panthers. Last season Wells piled up 25 tackles while Jackson had 37 stops, four tackles for loss and three sacks. Overall for head coach Rod Richardson this year is about continuing to improve and make a solid stretch run that continues into the postseason. “We return a strong core group of starters. We are looking to build on that wealth of experience and make a run into the playoffs this season,” Richardson said.

OFFENSE “We want to be extremely unpredictable and aggressive yet stay true to what we do,” Millwood head coach Darwin Franklin said. “As a unit our strength will be in our ability to work for a goal and not substitute individual achievement for team success.” Leading the Millwood offense this year will be VYPE Top 100 selectee Greg McCalister (6-0, 160, Sr.). Listed as an athlete McCalister could play anywhere from wide receiver to running back. Michelby Davis (6-5, 200, Sr.) will start at tight end for the Falcons and be a threat to catch passes down the field or blow up an opponent on a block to spring a teammate for a big play. Derian Brown (5-7, 150, Sr.) will also be a threat in the passing game as he lines up at receiver. On the offensive line expect Allen Hammon (6-1, 288, Sr.) and Bryan Clark (6-1, 217, Sr.) to be the leaders in the trenches. Quarterback Corey Hornbeak (5-10, 185, Jr.) will be working behind Millwood’s big offensive line
MILLWOOD FALCONS as he looks to improve on last year’s 1,243 yards and 11 touchdowns through the air.
DEFENSE On the defensive side of the ball Millwood returns eight starters and will be led by a nasty and aggressive trio up front. Davis will start at defensive end for the Falcons and team with Israel Antwine (6-4, 254, So.) and Jeffery Hall (6-0, 185, So.) to form a fearsome pass rush combination. In the secondary expect Brown and McCalister
to be playmakers for the Falcons shutting down receivers that dare to challenge the Falcons down the field. Other key players for the Millwood defense will be Christian Coleman (5-10, 268, So.), Clark and Hammon.

Quick Hits: The Pirates have missed the playoffs the past six seasons in spite of having a winning record in three of those years. Putnam City’s last playoff win occurred in the first round of the 2007 season against rival Putnam North.
Putnam City has won six of the last ten PC school district championships. Last 5 Years: 2014 - 3-7 2013 - 2-8 2012 - 6-4 2011 – 6-4 2010 – 6-4
OFFENSE The Putnam City Pirates found a new head coach after John Wofford resigned in January of 2015. After finishing 3-7, the Pirates wanted a fresh start. So, they went out and hired Preston Pearson, who has spent much of his time as an assistant at Union. Pearson wants to completely change the face of the program. “We are trying to change the entire culture of the program,” Pearson said. “We want to be champions in every aspect of our lives, not just football. Braden Hudson championships later.” Those are strong words from a coach who comes from a winning program. On offense, the Pirates return five starters, led by quarterback Braden Hudson (6-3, 190, Sr.). Hudson was All-Conference as a junior after throwing for almost 2,000 yards. In Pearson’s spread offense, Hudson should be able to develop into a multi-faceted passer. The Pirates will be big on the offensive line. Colton Maston (6-0, 240, Sr.) will be the anchor on the O-line, and he will help lead his younger teammates, such as Christian Ariola (6-2, 235, So.). Tight end Zach Hester (6-4, 210, Jr.) will help block, but will also be expected to catch some passes. In the backfield, Ryan Brown (5-11, 165, Sr.) will carry the load for the Pirates. His running attack will help open up the passing game for Hudson.

DEFENSE The strength for the Pirates will be on the defensive side of the ball. Six starters from 2014 return to the defense in 2015. Pearson wants to run a 4-3 defense that focuses on creating pressure, and mixing it up between zone and man coverage. The talent he has returning to his defense will play right into his scheme. Safety Drey Christon (6-0, 180, Sr.) headlines the group of returning starters. The senior class on defense will keep the Pirates in games when the offense might be struggling. Christon intercepted five passes and recorded 51 tackles as a junior. He will be expected to up both of those numbers. On the defensive line, Austin Williams (6-2, 235, Sr.) will be coming off the edge, putting pressure on the quarterback. As a junior, Williams recorded 68 tackles and five sacks. In Pearson’s defensive scheme, he should be able to increase those numbers. The linebacker corps will be the anchor, and key piece, of Pearson’s defense. Austin King (5-11, 175, Sr.) and Alfonzo Fuller (5-10, 179, Sr.) are tackling machines, and will be expected to continue that role. Fuller recorded 119 tackles and six sacks as a junior. If he puts up similar numbers, the Pirate defense will see success.
