QB – Casey Thompson, Southmoore Sabercats – Believe the hype! Casey Thompson started this journey as a freshman and now he’s one of the top recruited players in the state. Athletic, smart and a solid work ethic is why I’m putting Thompson on my team! RB – Devonte Lee, John Marshall Bears – I love running backs that can run you over or dance around you and Lee can do both. Give me Lee and this offense line and no one will stop us.

WR – Diego Richards, Carl Albert Titans – Overlooked for the VYPE Top 100, Richards deserve more credit for his play last season. With nearly 1,000-yards and eight touchdowns, his production puts him at the top of his class. OL – Brey Walker, Southmoore Sabercats – Another player worthy of making the Top 100, Walker has committed to the University of Okla-

homa and makes my team based on his dominance of opposing defensive players. DL – Deontre Thomas, Mustang Broncos – The Husker nation has spoken and I’m listening. Thomas is a rare player that understands what it truly means to “flip the switch.” Thomas is a one-man wrecking crew the Husker fans will love.

LB – R.T. Sherman, Carl Albert Titans – Everyone loves physical, athletic linebackers. Add intelligent and hard working to that list and you get R.T. Sherman. His football intelligence is off the charts. R.T. can lead my defense any day.

DB – Justin Broiles, John Marshall Bears – Is there a guy on the list you would love to have as a teammate more than Broiles? The charismatic DB has God given talent to make plays is a big reason he’s headed to OU.

Entering the 2016 season the Memorial Bulldogs return the majority of their starters on offense including quarterback Grant Decker (6-2, 210, Sr.). Decker had 476 yards passing and 377 yards rushing last season with seven touchdowns while splitting time with the senior. Now Decker gets the keys to the ship and wants to turn this into a season the Bulldog faithful will not soon forget. Running back Delvon McNeely (5-11, 210, Jr.) will play a large role on offense as head coach Justin Merideth looks for ways to balance out the attack. McNeely is big and surprisingly quick. Wide receivers Coleman Chavez (6-0, 185, Sr.) and Brendon Mitchel (6-4, 205, Jr.) must become the playmakers in the passing game. Both are experienced receivers with good hands and are not afraid of contact. With any team the offensive line is probably the key to the overall success of the offense. The Bulldogs return Grant Hill (6-2, 275, Sr.) at center and Alex Eichler (6-2, 255, Sr.) at guard. Both are next level prospects. The blocking combo of Hill and Eichler may be the best center/ guard duo in Class 6A. Combined they have five years of experience as starters. “I am very excited about the upcoming season. I feel we have a chance to have a very successful season,” said coach Merideth.

DEFENSE

There are a few question marks on the defensive side of the ball, but with players like Aaron Charlton (5-10, 170, Sr.) and Kaiden Grover (5-10, 220, Sr.) the defense will come around fairly quickly. Charlton will start at one of the corner positions,

OKLAHOMA CHRISTIAN SCHOOL SAINTS OFFENSE The Oklahoma Christian School Saints are moving up to Class 3A this season. Head coach Derek Turner said the move would certainly test the team. “Moving up to 3A will be a real challenge. We will be the smallest school in the class by a wide margin,” said coach Turner. But despite the move the players are ready to take the field. Quarterback Mason Arnold (6-1, 190, Jr.) will guide the Saints offense, utilizing players like receiver Jaxon Sinclair (6-3, 185, Sr.). Sinclair is a big target that runs crisp routes. Tanner Holliman (510, 170, So.) is a young receiver, but has the speed and hands to make a real difference for the offense this season. Running back Bobby Chapman (5-11, 175, Jr.) is looking to have a breakout year behind an offensive line that features JP Morris (6-3, 255,

Grant Decker while Grover returns to his linebacker spot. Grover is a machine in the box fighting off blocks and getting to the ball carrier. Casey High (6-0, 215) is another senior linebacker bringing physicality and leadership to the field. Junior Jack Onrecker (6-1, 200) may be the most underrated player on the team. Still developing into a great player, look for Onrecker to have a breakout season. Chris Pope (6-0, 160, Jr.) joins Charlton in the secondary. Pope has the speed of a sprinter and closes distance very well. On the defensive line the Bulldogs will cut the leash on Sam Musser (6-0, 205, Sr.) who will use his speed and agility to cut through the offensive line and pursue the ball carrier. The 3-4 scheme fits well with the talent the Bulldogs have on the field. Coach Merideth said to look for an aggressive style of defense this season, something his opponents have come to expect.

Sr.) and Grayson Howlett (6-3, 265, So.). Coach Trey Sanchez has moved to the offensive coordinator position. DEFENSE Several players will go both ways for the Saints this season including Morris at tackle. Charles Horton (6-1, 225, Sr.) will start on the line with Morris, while Jake Rice (6-3, 220, Jr.) will be used on the line or at linebacker. Warren Chapman (6-2, 185, Sr.) is another multipurpose player for the Saints. Chapman will play linebacker or defensive back depending on team needs. Zac Stegall (6-0, 185, Sr.) and Calyn Halvorson (6-0, 175, So.) shore up the secondary for the Saints. Coach Turner will stay in the 3-5-3 using the single high safety. “We’re looking to attack on defense. We still use a single high safety. Not many of us left,” said coach Turner.

6AII-1

DEER CREEK ANTLERS Coach: JAY WILKINSON Enrollment: 1,363

*Oklahoman All-State Selections OFFENSE

A new staff takes over at Deer Creek as the Jay Wilkinson era begins. Coach Wilkinson comes over from Coweta High School bringing his high-powered offense and aggressive defensive philosophy.

Schedule: Sept. 2 – vs. Southmoore Sept. 9 – vs. Edmond Santa Fe Sept. 16 – at Edmond Memorial Sept. 23 – at Stillwater Sept. 30 – vs. Midwest City Oct. 7 – at Enid Oct. 14 – at Putnam City Oct. 20 – at Putnam City West Oct. 28 – vs. Choctaw Nov. 4 – at Lawton

Quick Hits: With the move up to Class 6A-Division II, all but two opponents are new to the Antlers schedule. Deer Creek spent eight seasons in Class 5A from 2008-2015 posting winning records seven of those eight years with an overall mark of 56-33. Guthrie drops off the schedule just when the Antlers were starting to get the best of the series. Deer Creek took both the 2014 and 2015 meetings. Guthrie owns the all-time record with a mark of 7-4. Expect senior wide receiver Zach Kerstetter to be running under many spirals again in 2016. Kerstetter caught touchdown passes of 27 and 45 yards plus a two-point conversion against Ardmore in a 42-37 first round playoff win. Last 5 Years: 2015 - 8-4 2014 - 7-4 2013 - 6-5 2012 - 10-2 2011 – 7-4

All-State History: Wade Hundley 1983 Clay Coe 1999 Luke Roberts 2002 Austin Loomis 2012 Dillon Noble 2013

VYPE Top 100 selectee Zach Kerstetter (5-8, 160, Sr.) is the prototypical player in a coach Wilkinson offense. Last season he caught 80 passes for 1,278 yards and 15 touchdowns, which is the type of production you should expect to see this season. Two players are competing for the quarterback job; Hunter Freese (6-0, 160, Jr.) and Ryan Westerhoff (Sr.) are battling for the starting job and the competition is bringing out the best in both players. “Offensively the question is who will win the QB job? Westerhoff and Freese are battling for the position. Also what wide receivers will step up to compliment Kerstetter?” Coach Wilkinson said.

Its not surprising Deer Creek has a few questions to answer, but what might surprise a few people is where the offensive line is with their development. Cooper Moore (6-1, 240, Sr.), Jake Strickland (6-3, 255, Sr.) and Ethan Renner (6-2, 230, Jr.) are the mainstays upfront for the Antlers. One player looking to benefit from the line play is running back Preston Seibel (6-1, 215, Jr.). A big player in his own right, Seibel only had 25 carries for 138 yards last season, but is expected to carry the load in this season.

Zach Kerstetter DEFENSE

Coach Greg Bryant takes over as defensive coordinator coming to Deer Creek from Southmoore High School. The Antlers have a lot of new starters on defense, but the big question is how quick can they learn the new system? Several guys may go both ways like Strickland at nose guard and Westerhoff at safety where he had four interceptions and 47 tackles last season. Strickland was an animal at nose guard recording 43 tackles and two sacks, but also look for defensive end Abel Kwendi (Sr.) who grabbed 11 sacks as a junior. It’s “pick your poison” when these two are on the field. Dalton Dawson (6-2, 215, Sr.) is the big, heavy hitter at linebacker. Last year Dawson had 57 tackles as a junior. Moore could see time at end, while Kerstetter has played corner and could start their when the Antlers open the season. Also look for Seibel at linebacker. Deer Creek makes the move to Class 6AII and will compete against the likes of Lawton, Midwest City, Stillwater, Putnam City West, Putnam City, Enid and Choctaw. “Our schedule will be a challenge every week,” said coach Wilkinson.

Other coaches on the staff include John Lang, Josh Cooper, Roland Baza, Jonathan Washington, Isaiah Byrd, Ethan Sharp and Craig Hayes.

Quick Hits: With a 4-6 record in 2015, Edmond North now stands 120-119 since beginning football in 1994. Edmond North has missed the playoffs two straight years. The last time the Huskies didn’t qualify for the post-season three years in a row was 1995-1997. Last 5 Years: 2015 - 4-6 2014 - 3-7 2013 - 7-5 2012 - 10-2 2011 – 9-3

As head coach Scott Burger enters his fourth season the Edmond North Huskies appear to have one of the more talented squads in recent memory.

“Really like this team. During the offseason they have worked hard and they keep everyone accountable. They play well together as a team and we’re excited to see what happens this year,” said coach Burger.

The offensive line is the key to the success for the Huskies this season. Clay Padgett (6-3, 267, Sr.) will start at tackle and is probably one of the smartest players on the field. Padgett scored a 31 on the ACT and his football IQ is off the charts. Guard Colin Patton (6-0, 220, Sr.) and center Quinton Marsh (6-2, 210, Sr.) are the keystones to the offense and have the determination to make this unit one of the best the Huskies have had in several years. Two players looking to benefit from their dominance is running back Alex Smith (5-10, 185, Jr.) and quarterback Anthony Belton (5-11, 165, Sr.). Smith rushed for 355 yards and five touchdowns last season, while Belton saw limited action but still contributed 243 yards on the ground and caught 15 passes for 136 yards. Finding balance between the run and pass games is the focus heading into the season with big

games against Santa Fe, Union and Norman North on the road. DEFENSE

The 2016 version of the Huskies defense is a fast one. This team has a ton of speed and leading the way is defensive back Brock Appiah. A track star at North Appiah accounted for 25 tackles and is expected to have a breakout season on both sides of the ball. Caden Miller (5-11, 210, Sr.) has made significant gains in the weight room and returns to his linebacker spot after racking up 125 tackles a year ago. Sam Rycroft (6-0, 205, Sr.) like Miller, has made major gains in the offseason and had 148 tackles in 2015. The pair bring toughness and athleticism to the defense for coach Burger. DMarija Caine (5-7, 170, Sr.) and Carter Randolph (6-0, 160, Sr.) add to the overall team speed, but one factor that makes them big contributors is their willingness to step up and make the tackle. Randolph recorded 85 tackles and seven interceptions last year. Josh Crusan (6-0, 210, Sr.) can get after it at defensive end. This team has several guys that will make major contributions this year including Xavier Stockard (5-7, 220, Sr.), Noah Hooks (5-11, 190, Jr.) and Hunter Richard (6-3, 260, Jr.).

EDMOND SANTA FE WOLVES Coach: KYLE WHITE Enrollment: 2,186

Quick Hits: The Wolves reclaimed the top spot in Edmond defeating both Edmond North and Edmond Memorial for the first time since 2011.

The Wolves made the state semifinals for the fourth time in school history. And were oh so close to their first championship game appearance since 2003. Broken Arrow scored 35 unanswered second half points to eliminate Santa Fe, 49-30. Deer Creek makes its first ever appearance on the Santa Fe schedule this fall. The Antlers have moved all the way to Class 6A-Division II. Deer Creek participated in Class 2A when Santa Fe began playing football in 1994.

OFFENSE The 2016 season is setting up nicely for the Oklahoma Christian Academy Eagles. Head coach Grey Powell returns eight starters on offense and nine on defense. Great numbers for the Eagles who reside in the tough A4 district. “I am excited about our team. After a trip to the Class 6AI state semifinals last year the Wolves are focused on getting back to the dance and getting another shot at making history. The high-flying J.T. Wullschleger (5-11, 167, Sr.) and the speedy Daviaun Bowler (6-1, 165, Sr.) will give opposing defensive coordinators headaches this season. Wullschleger and Bowler are the primary targets in the air raid spread offense head coach Kyle White will run this season. Two players are competing for time at the quarterback position. Julian Hoskins (5-11, 170, Sr.) and Drew Rasmussen (5-11, 187, Sr.) are both capable of leading this team, but both are also willing to do whatever it takes to win games. Even if it means playing a different position to help the team. Center Zach Clouse (6-3, 285, Sr.) left tackle Taurean Smith (6-0, 255, Jr.) return to the offensive line for the Wolves. Both guys are hard-nosed football players that live up to the expectations. Coach White as been with the program for five years and has spent one has the lead man. Several changes have been made to the staff including Roger Pfieffer coaching quarterbacks, Andy Rasmussen moving to the offensive line, Tyler Shaw taking over the defensive line, Wes Crosson coaching linebackers and Chris Rose will coach safeties.

DEFENSE

The defense only returns two starters to the lineup, but the players that must step up to fill the holes do have varsity experience. Trent Yarnell (5-9, 155, Sr.) will start at outside linebacker where he recorded 32 tackles and an interception last year. Yarnell is a natural on the outside where his speed and athleticism can take over. Nick Gay (6-3, 235, Sr.) plugs the line from his tackle spot

Powell. The offense will transition to the flexbone triple option to itilize the talent in the skill positions. Caleb Powell (6-0, 190, Sr.) threw for 1,201 yards and 10 touchdowns last season and rushed for an additional 715 yards and seven touchdowns. Powell has several schools looking to make him a Saturday afternoon QB. Tommy Imbu (5-6, 210, Jr.) rushed for 1,321 yards and 19 touchdowns at running back, while slot receiver Dre Hill (5-8, 165, Jr.) added 309 yards and six touchdowns on the ground and 625 yards receiving with six scores through the air. Robert Gregg (6-2, 185, Jr.) has the talent to play either tight end or wide receiver. The offensive line features Riley Roper (6-3, 230, Jr.) and Justin Jayne (6-2, 245, Jr.). The pair will give Powell time in the pocket and open holes in the running game. DEFENSE Powell will start in the secondary at safety where he recorded 46 tackles

Trent Yarnell where he grabbed three sacks and 30 tackles as a junior. Tony Rayburn (5-11, 187, Sr.) and Ryan Walden (5-9, 150, Jr.) have shown they have the speed and ability to cover a lot of ground from their safety positions. As a sophomore Walden had 17 tackles and one interception. Also look for Wullschleger to start at corner in the 4-2-5 defense coach White is going to implement this season. Overall the defense has some hole to fill, but there are younger, less experienced players that need to mature and step into those positions. If that happens and the defense can force some turnovers the Wolves have a shot at being one of those teams you hate to play late in the season.

two interceptions and a fumble recovery. Chandler Farris (6-1, 160, Jr.) joins Powell in the secondary at corner. Farris was a productive player racking up 42 tackles and forcing one fumble in 2015. Speaking of production, the linebackers for the Eagles are just that. Kody Wilson (56, 160, Jr.) returns with a team high 94 tackles, while fellow linebacker Christian Balaban (5-11, 180, Sr.) had 70 tackles of his own. Wilson and Balaban will play a key role in the success of the defense. Hill also joins the linebacker unit bringing his 70 tackles to the mix. Defensive end Kayl Reiter (6-1, 215, Sr.) looks to get after the opposing quarterbacks this season after accounting for 36 tackles, three sacks and an interception a year ago. Taking over as Defensive Coordinator is Jason Corley, who will look to implement the 3-5-3 scheme this season. Aug. 26 – vs. Hennessey Sept. 2 – vs. Cashion

Unstoppable II The Southmoore Sabercats are turning heads with one of the top offensive units in the state. Oh, they also play some pretty good defense. The year was 2009 and the August issue of VYPE Magazine featured Southmoore on the cover with the title Unstoppable? Then head coach Chris Jensen was coming off a 2-8 season, but had the horses in the stable to compete and possibly win one for the west side. Players like Julian Wilson, Austin Haywood, Nyko Symonds, Mason Myers, Derek Serowski, Kyaunn Thompson and of course Kendal Thompson were marked as the team that would finally end the run of Jenks and Union. But it was Jenks that would stop the unstoppable in the semifinals of the playoffs. Anyone watching that game will remember Thompson in that game and left knowing he left it all on the field. Seven years later we’re still talking about the Jenks/Union run of titles. “I was at the playoff game against Jenks in 2009 and I remember almost everything about it. You could tell the players who really wanted it. They fought back! I remember Kendall throwing for a few touchdowns and scrambling a lot,” said Thompson. Enter quarterback Casey Thompson and Unstoppable II. Like the 2009 group the Unstoppable II team has several players going D1. Wide receivers Quindon Lewis, Gervarrius Owens, and Quian Williams, offensive tackle Brey Walker and Casey Thompson all have offers on the table. Walker has committed to the University of Oklahoma, while the others are still undecided. According to the Southmoore football twitter page, @GoSouthmooreFB, during spring ball this year there were 87 different schools that made a visit to Southmoore and 133 scholarship offers 14

were given. That number is certainly more by now. Head coach Jeremy Stark wasn’t part of that 2009 group, but having coached and watched this group grow up in front of his eyes, Stark knows they have the potential for something special. “We are very fortunate to have such a great group of kids. These guys are not only great football players they are also great workers and leaders. They have set the tone for the program with their work ethic and leadership. It's always great when your have your returning guys and some of your better players be your best workers too. It helps show the rest of the team and those younger kids how things should be done.” Offensive coordinator Jeff Brickman coached on the 2009 team and said he does see some similarities and some differences between the two. “This group works harder than the kids in 2009. They also have the advantage of the experience playing together longer than 2009 team. Athletically they are very similar. This group has more depth. But this group doesn't have an Austin Haywood, which is the most dominant HS player I have coached,” coach Brickman said. “We opened in 2008 so the 2009 group basically had one year to put it all together. Also, 2009 was my first year to coordinate an offense. This year will be my eighth year.” Nyko Symonds said the ’09 team was “extremely confident, maybe a little too much at times,” but they did have some of the best skill players in the state. “I would tell this team to really focus on

coming together as a team and push aside the individualism because that can easily ruin potential greatness. They have to be hungry themselves and have a sense of urgency to prove their hype on the field as a team with one goal,” said Symonds. So what makes them unstoppable? Thompson has started at quarterback since his freshman season. Last year he threw for more than 2,600 yards and rushed for over 1,000. The work ethic this group shows on a daily basis is something that Thompson believes could be the difference this season. “The group we have now is special because we all work hard and we are hungry, from the players to the coaches. I’m seeing players and coaches put in extra hours these days. I’m glad to see stuff like that and I enjoy being around people who care about the game and about each other,” said Thompson. The excitement doesn’t stop with the offense. The Sabercats return eight starters on defense that set 27 school records in 2015. Owen and Lewis will start on defense with C.J. Owens, Darrien Mack, Perry Olsen and Brandon Milam. Will the talent mixed with work ethic and desire, coupled with a coaching staff motivated beyond anything you can imagine and the belief in themselves be enough to end the Class 6A drought for the west? Ask any Sabercat and you get one answer, YES. For the rest of the story go to VYPEOKC.com

SOUTHMOORE SABERCATS Coach: JEREMY STARK Enrollment: 1,991

Schedule: Sept. 2 – at Deer Creek Sept. 9 – vs. Westmoore Sept. 16 – vs. Yukon Sept. 23 – vs. Moore Sept. TBA – at Edmond North Oct. 7 – vs. Norman North Oct. 14 – at Owasso Oct. 20 – vs. Union Oct. 28 – at Mustang Nov. 3 – vs. Putnam City North

Quick Hits: The Sabercats claimed their fourth Moore championship in eight years. Quarterback Casey Thompson was a beast in those contests with ten combined touchdowns, including seven against Westmoore alone. Southmoore’s nine wins in 2015 were the second most in school history.

Edmond Santa Fe won’t appear on the schedule this fall. The Wolves upset the Sabercats in the first round of the playoffs and own a 5-2 all-time record against Southmoore. Last 5 Years: 2015 - 9-2 2014 - 4-7 2013 - 6-4 2012 - 7-4 2011 – 5-6

OFFENSE

Breaking down the Southmoore offense is like trying to solve Hilbert’s sixteenth problem. There may not be an answer. But if we’re going to talk about the Sabercats in terms of math, let’s look at some numbers.

Quarterback Casey Thompson (6-1, 180, Jr.) threw for 2,670 yards and rushed for 1,011 yards giving him a total of 3,681 yards of offense. Add his 20 touchdowns and you have one of the most productive quarterbacks in Class 6A. That type of output has schools like Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Ohio State, Miami, TCU, Iowa State, West Virginia, Penn State, North Carolina, Illinois, Virginia Tech, Arizona State, Oregon State and many, many more competing for Thompson’s services on Saturday. But before Thompson decides where he’ll spend the next four years, he has a Sabercat team to quarterback.

Two-way starters Quindon Lewis (6-1, 175, Sr.) and Gervarrius Owens (6-1, 185, Sr.) add complexity to the passing game with their ability to get open and their game breaking speed. Lewis accounted for 402 yards with 11 touchdowns, while Owens had 406 yards receiving with seven touchdowns. But if you turn all of your focus to stopping Lewis and Owens you will surely get burned by Quian Williams (6-0, 175, Sr.). Another speedy receiver, Williams had four touchdowns to go with his 603 yards of offense. RaeQuan Wicks (5-9, 175, Jr.) adds a splash of “ah-oh” to the running game with his

Quian Williams ability to make would-be tacklers miss. Doug Collins is expected to see time in the backfield as well.

The final piece to the Southmoore equation is offensive tackle Brey Walker (6-6, 325, Jr.). Walker is an Oklahoma commit and a tackle that grades out high every game. His presence up front will provide the Sabercats with a sense of security knowing Walker is an immovable force at tackle.

DEFENSE

The defensive secondary is loaded with D1 talent as Owens and Lewis have put Class 6A quarterbacks on notice. In 2015 Owens had 64 tackles, five sacks and one interception, while Lewis recorded 31 tackles and four interceptions. The leading tackler for the Sabercats is Darrien Mack (5-8, 170, Sr.) who also plays in the secondary. This unit takes pride in being one of the best in Oklahoma. If they continue to thrive it will be a long season for opposing QB’s.

Perry Olsen (6-1, 185, Jr.) may not get the hype some of his teammates get, but if you want someone who goes to work every day and shows up on Friday nights, then you want Olsen on the field. Last year he grabbed 56 tackles and should see those numbers increase this season. The defensive line for the Sabercats is intimidating. C.J. Owens (6-2, 260, Sr.) and Brandon Milam (6-2, 255, Sr.) will ruffle some feathers on the defensive line this year. They combine for 84 tackles and two sacks last year. Look for the dangerous combo to get a lot of attention from opposing offensive lines. Head coach Jeremy Stark may not be Albert Einstein when it comes to solving math problems, but you can bet he’s got a formula for success and will work step-by-step to try and break the stranglehold on the 6A state title.

Quick Hits: The Lions defeated Norman for the first time since 2003. The 19-6 week three win also ended an overall 18-game losing streak.

Quarterback Josh Detweiler did all he could to help the Lions upset rival Westmoore. Detweiler threw, caught and ran for a touchdown in a 25-21 loss in the opening week of the season. Moore head coach Paul Hix came to the Lions from Stillwater. His current team will meet his former team for the first time ever September 8th at Moore Stadium. Last 5 Years: 2015 - 1-9 2014 - 0-10 2013 - 1-9 2012 - 2-8 2011 – 2-8

Senior quarterback Josh Detweiler (6-1, 188) is a three-year starter for head coach Paul Hix and his production has continued to increase every season. Last year Detweiler completed 107 of 232 passes for 1,203 yards and eight touchdowns. The Lions will run the spread offense and with 10 returning players on the offensive side of the ball the Lions will depend on experience, talent and continuity to compete in a tough district. Wide receiver Emmitt Grayson (6-3, 195, Sr.) had 12 receptions for 147 yards last year, but is expected to make a significant impact this season. A pair of tight ends could be the security blanket for Detweiler. Antonio Daniels (6-2, 205, Sr.) and Jace Torres (6-2, 215, Jr.) have improved in all areas of their game, but look for Detweiler to get them involved in the passing game. Abel Wills (6-2, 190) did not play last season due to an injury, but returns to add another dimension to the offensive attack. The offensive line features Alex Wright (6-0, 270) who the coaching staff will look to for O-line leadership in practice and in the huddle. “We have an experienced group of seniors returning for the 2016 season. Dropped passes plagued the Lions last year and we are hoping that a great offseason and summer can alleviate those issues,” said coach Hix. DEFENSE

Expect an aggressive, attacking defense from the Lions this season as the Class

Josh Detweiler 6A leading tackler returns in Dimeon Dunlap (6-0, 205, Sr.). Dunlap recorded 162 tackles in only eight games last year. Nine of those were for loss with one sack and eight QB hurries. Dunlap is an old school banger with a sixth sense for the football. Senior Josh Carrethers (6-1, 190) is another hard-hitter at linebacker. Both competitors play without fear as they look to lead the Lion defense. B.J. Adams (5-9, 165, Sr.) picked off four passes last year to go with his 44 tackles as a junior. He also blocked a punt. Dayton Phillips (5-10, 170, Sr.) compiled 20 tackles, one interception and one fumble recovery from his corner spot a year ago. Shoring up the secondary is strong safety Marcus Nickel (5-10, 165, Jr.).

On the defensive line the Lions have playmaker Tanner Brouchoud (6-2, 230, Jr.) who recorded 24 tackles, six for loss, from his defensive end position. Brouchoud will play a big role in the 3-4 scheme coach Hix plans to run this season.

Scoring points was not the problem for the Jaguars in 2015 and shouldn’t be a problem this year. Quarterback Braxton Bohrofen (6-1, 185, JR) looked comfortable under center from the jump, after earning the starting position in August. Bohrofen is savvy and can move, but his biggest strength is firing the football down the field. He threw for 1,500 yards and 15 touchdowns as a sophomore. Versatility is another strong suit of the Jaguars offense. The duo of Mike Hotchkins (5-9, 160, SR) and Braxton George (5-9, 165) will see most of the work out of the backfield. Hotchkins is super quick, rushed for just shy of 900 yards in 2015 and was clutch for the Jags’ on the receiving end of some big pass plays. George averaged more than 20 yards per reception and along with Hotchkins, proved to be adept at blocking for Bohrofen. Newcomer James King (6-0, 200, JR) brings a much needed power aspect to the rushing attack. H-back James Palmer (6-2, 210, JR) is a difficult matchup. Palmer has a wide frame yet can still climb the ladder for 50-50 balls. A smattering of wideouts will audition to catch throws from Bohorfen including Sterlin Ortiz (5-10, 170, SR), Derrick Ortiz (6-2, 190, JR) and Wyatt Duvall (5-10, 180, SR), who will play a bigger role on special teams and defense. Duvall is the fastest player on the team and returned a kick for six last fall. The blocking is headlined by the duo of Jordan Finn (6-2, 265, SR) and Ethan Newby (6-3, 270, SR). Finn is the latest in the line of a long family tradition at Westmoore. He’s had four brothers block for the Jags prior to his arrival at the school where his father served as wrestling coach and is currently the sophomore principal. DEFENSE

When the Jaguars last took the field, they found themselves on the wrong side of a whopping 40-point quarter by the Putnam City offense. That kept Westmoore from making the post season and serves as plenty of motivation for im-

Braxton George provement. Ethan Steward (5-10, 215, JR) played well up front as a sophomore making 22 tackles as a pup. Another talented pup will see immediate action on the defensive line. Lane Grantham (6-1, 260, SO) could help on either side of the football and has a very bright future. Right now he’s earned the starting spot at the nose. Isaiah Hernandez (6-0, 280, JR) and Davion Collins (6-2, 270, JR) reinforce the front with more size and strength. Elsewhere defensively, Westmoore must utilize size and experience. Trey Painter (5-10, 180, SR) is the top returning tackler with 99 to his credit in 2015. The Jags blitzed quite frequently from the edge and the secondary a year ago. Painter and outside linebacker Jake Martel (5-11, 170, JR) were both adept at putting pressure on the quarterback. Inside linebacker Ryan Clark (6-0, 185, JR) was outstanding in 2015. He knows the defense inside and out and combines a great understanding of the game with significant physical talent. More help at linebacker will come from the likes of Carson Cunningham, Sam Richardson and Spencer Vasquez. Wyatt Duvall’s 56 tackles are the most returning in the secondary where his cover skills are crucial to the Westmoore defense. Preston Beavers (5-9, 165, JR) also returns to a starting spot at cornerback. Sophomore Jaxon Hanson could also be a factor in a talented unit. It’s the first year for head coach Lorenzo Williams who comes to the Jaguars from Springfield, MO. Williams was tough as nails in his playing days at Midwest City followed by a stellar career at Mizzou. He certainly knows football in this area and the success of Westmoore this fall should be determined by how much improvement he can get out of his defensive unit.

PIEDMONT WILDCATS Coach: DREW GOSSEN Enrollment: 846

Schedule: Sept. 2 – at El Reno Sept. 9 – vs. Weatherford Sept. 16 – at Noble Sept. 23 – at NW Classen Sept. 30 – vs. Lawton Ike Oct. 7 – vs. Guymon Oct. 14 – at Woodward Oct. 21 – vs. Guthrie Oct. 28 – at Carl Albert Nov. 4 – vs. McGuinness

Quick Hits: The Wildcats turned it up a notch on defense at the end of 2015. Piedmont finished on a 3-1 run allowing an average of 13 points per game in its final four contests.

Piedmont is one of the fastest growing school districts in the state. The Wildcats competed in Class 2A-1 in 1997 and have now spent the past two seasons in Class 5A. Piedmont owns a record of 6-14 since making the jump. The Piedmont-Deer Creek rivalry has come to an end for the time being. Those two schools met every year from 1998 to 2015 with Deer Creek holding a 14-4 edge during that span. Last 5 Years: 2015 - 3-7 2014 - 3-7 2013 - 4-6 2012 - 5-5 2011 – 6-5

OFFENSE Numbers are on the rise at Piedmont High School and so is the football program under head coach Drew Gossen. “We have high expectations for this season. This group has worked very hard through the offseason and has shown a commitment to excellence through spring and team camp. We are excited to see Piedmont football make a playoff run this year,” said coach Gossen. Landon White (5-11, 205, Sr.) had 101 carries for 431 yards and eight touchdowns last season and coming into 2016 White is clearly the back that will handle the majority of carries on offense. Quarterback Noah Ellis (5-10, 190, Sr.) completed 102 passes for 1,072 yards and seven touchdowns. His production will set a tone for the Wildcats as he looks to get several players involved in the passing game. One player to look for is Easton Hensley (6-0, 150, Sr.) who recorded 19 catches for 218 yards and two touchdowns a year ago. Offensive coordinator Wil Wortmann continues to mix it up on offense giving the Wildcats opportunities to move the ball and eat the clock. DEFENSE With great quickness off the edge Christian Bricker (6-5, 220, Sr.) is an emerging super-

Christian Bricker star for the Wildcat. Last season he had 64 tackles, six sacks with 11 of those for a loss. Outside linebacker Jacob Bakewell (6-0, 205, Sr.) grabbed 74 tackles and had three sacks on the season. Bakewell was named to the VYPE Top 100 this season and is expected to have another great campaign. Middle linebacker Dylan Meador (5-8, 210, Sr.) brings his physical style of play to the field after racking up 70 tackles as a junior. Jacob Storts (5-8, 170, Sr.) will start at strong safety, shoring up the secondary under the tutelage of Matt Bilyeu. Storts is a three-year letterman for the Wildcats. Austin Mitchell (6-0, 195, Sr.) had 75 tackles from his defensive line spot and returns to be the force in the middle. “We will be an aggressive group on defense,” said coach Gossen

Quick Hits: Mustang and Stillwater will continue a nondistrict series for the fifth consecutive season. The Broncos have beaten the Pioneers three of those four meetings.

The Broncos played some of their best football against east side foes in 2015. Mustang defeated Owasso and lost to Broken Arrow and Union by a combined margin of 14 points. Mustang enter the season opener with two straight wins against Yukon. Neither side in the Canadian County War has won more than two in a row since the Broncos rolled up four straight from 2003-2006. Last 5 Years: 2015 - 7-4 2014 - 8-4 2013 - 7-5 2012- 6-4 2011 – 3-7

When graduation takes most of a football team’s experience, it’s either reloading or rebuilding that soon follows. Under Jeremy Dombek the Mustang Broncos have earned the right to use the term reloading. Quarterback Chandler Garrett is off to Wyoming and many others on offense graduated this past spring. While one Garrett is gone, another has arrived on the scene. Brayden Garrett (6-0, 175, JR) will call the shots for the offense as the starter. He served as back up a year ago and saw only limited duty. Height is the main differentiator between the siblings. While Chandler is taller, Brayden also possesses many of the same characteristics that led to an ultra successful high school career. The younger Garrett will throw a group featuring Damion Close (6-1, 170, JR), Ping Harris (6-0, 175, SR), Caden Arthur (6-4, 180, SR) and Ashton Jones (6-3, 205, SR). While Harris is not playing football, he’s working out as a boxer showing a flair for toughness at wide receiver. Arthur and Jones are bigger targets that can also carry the football. Close transferred in from Owasso during the offseason and has burning speed. He may be the break out player of the group. The running back duties will be handled by Carlos Thomas (5-9, 180, JR), the younger brother of defensive stalwart Deontre Thomas. Carlos wasn’t able to break into a senior dominated backfield a year ago. We could see exponential growth of his numbers of eight carries for 35 yards and a touchdown. Drew Rosco (6-3, 265, JR) is the focal point of the offensive line. DEFENSE

The Broncos defense might be one of the more under rated units in Class 6A. Mustang held seven of its

Deontre Thomas ten opponents to thirty points or less in 2015 and finished strong down the stretch against some of the beasts from the east. And speaking of beasts, Mustang has got one in the middle. Deontre Thomas (6-4, 275, SR) is not easily moved. Thomas is the noseguard in the Broncos’ 3-4 look. He not only plugged things up for the defense but made 66 tackles and nine stops of his own. He’s verbally committed to Nebraska and you can see why the Cornhuskers are interested after Thomas clocked a 4.6 forty-yard dash this summer. Austin Brown (6-2, 240, SR) and Johnny Still (6-3, 220) play to either side of Thomas up front. Gage McBride (6-1, 185, SR) has the second most returning tackles at linebacker, where the Broncos will be looking for some new faces after suffering losses to graduation. There has been some shifting in a talented and experienced secondary. Darion Richards (5-10, 165, SR), Carter Rees (5-11, 165, SR) and Garrett Killpatrick (6-1, 180, SR) all started a year ago. Richards led the group in interceptions with three while Killpatrick led in tackles with 57. Rees moves from cornerback to free safety, opening the gateway for Dominik Venegas (6-2, 175, SO) onto the gridiron. Venegas is a can’t miss prospect that already has Division-I coaches all over him at a young age. Mustang also snatched Westmoore head coach Adam Gaylor to coordinate the defense in the offseason and the team has responded well to the changes. This is a defense that could carry the Broncos back into contention for a district title and should not be taken lightly.

Athlete of the Month Mustang coach Roberts. KARIS CLARK - MUSTANG HIGH SCHOOLL Karis Clark is a junior at Mustang High School where she plays varsity fastpitch softball for the Lady Broncs. Since she was five years old Clark has called the softball field her home away from home. Now in high school Clark is one of the leaders head coach Jamie Roberts is leaning on to help guide this team and bring stability to the lineup. “Karis will be catching for us this season and has accepted this role and will do a tremendous job for us,” said

That willingness to change positions and learn a new position exposes the type of character and leader Clark is on the field. “Being a leader on my team I believe is a very important role, we do not have any seniors on our team so that makes all of the juniors have to step up to fill that role. Being a leader I have to help bring the team together and get us all to work hard every play whether it's at practice or in games,” said Clark. But making that adjustment from third base to catcher is not an easy one Clark explained.

“The biggest adjustment for me from going to third base to catcher is just getting comfortable. I'm a little out of my element behind the plate but I like the feeling of getting to control the game a little more. It's a challenge that I'm very excited to take on.” Also a basketball player at Mustang Clark does have aspirations of playing softball at the next level. “I would love to continue my softball career into college. I have schools that I am very interested in and would love to play for after I graduate from Mustang,” said Clark.

Quick Hits: Woodward and El Reno wil scrimmage on August 26th. The two teams do not meet for the first time going back over a quarter of a century. The Boomers took the lats three in the series but El Reno held a 14-11 advantage the past 25 years.

Carl Albert also drops off the schedule. The Titans and Indians have met 17 of the last 18 seasons with Carl Albert winning all but the 1999 regular season meeting. The Indians have dropped five in a row to Highway 81 rival Chickasha.

OFFENSE The Indians are looking to control the line of scrimmage, work the clock with ball control and use an explosive play-action passing game to move the chains. Head coach Wes Brower likes what he is seeing from this team in spring ball. “We are looking forward to continued improvement as we strive toward championship football in El Reno again. If this team continues to improve and work hard, they should be in the thick of a playoff race at the end of the season. We are a young team and will have to stay healthy to compete, but we will be much improved from the previous two seasons,” said coach Brower. With five returning players to the lineup the Indians have the nucleus of what could be one of their best teams offensively in a few years. Hunter Baker (5-10, 175, Sr.) will split carries with Hunter Cometsevah (6-1, 175, Jr.), as both running backs look to jump-start the offense on the ground. Quarterback Gage Armold (6-4, 170, Jr.) will use the running game to set up the pass with Ricky Baxter (5-11, 165, Jr.) at wide receiver. A key to the offense this season may be the offensive line. Nick Stine (6-2, 265, Sr.) and Victor Torres (6-1, 265, Sr.) will anchor the line that has a couple of holes to fill heading into summer workouts. Offensive line guru Rocky Carter takes over coaching the line, while Mitchell Haun will take over coaching running backs. DEFENSE Stopping the run and limiting the big plays is

Hunter Cometsevah the focus this year for the Indians on defense. Nose guard Trey MedicineBear (6-1, 290, Sr.) is the keystone to the 3-4 defense coach Brower is going to run this year. MedicineBear is expected to have a breakout season after sitting out last year due to a transfer. Jacob McQuown (6-2, 275, Jr.) and Brady Proctor (5-11, 215, Jr.) join MedicineBear on the line giving the Indians a strong trio up front. The D-line will get so much attention it will allow linebackers Braxton Flick (5-11, 240, Sr.), Luis Escobar (5-10, 185, Jr.) and Christian Muro (5-10, 180, Sr.) to roam relatively free and make plays on the ball at the line of scrimmage. District play will feature the defending Class 5A champion in Altus with regular rivals Lawton MacArthur, Ardmore and Duncan.

OFFENSE

Head coach Brian Sauser enters his second season leading the Yukon Millers and his offseason program is paying off. Players are focused and have bought into the system, but more importantly they are understanding what it takes if you want to play at the top of the hill.

Schedule: Sept. 2 – vs. Mustang Sept. 9 – vs. Norman North Sept. 16 – at Southmoore Sept. 23 – at Broken Arrow Sept. 30 – at Sand Springs Oct. 6 – at Norman Oct. 13 – vs. Edmond Memorial Oct. 21 – vs. Jenks Oct. 28 – at Edmond Santa Fe Nov. 4 – at Westmoore

Quick Hits: Week three will mark the first ever meeting between the Millers and Southmoore. Yukon has lost its last six games away from Miller Stadium, last winning at Putnam City 25-13 week seven of 2014. Yukon gave up 49 points per game in 2015. The total of 490 points was 97 more than Norman, which finished next to last in 6A-Division I points allowed. Last 5 Years: 2015 - 2-8 2014 - 4-6 2013 - 6-5 2012 - 5-6 2011 – 7-4

“We have had a tremendous offseason where our kids have become much stronger and worked a great deal on leadership and discipline within our program. I am very confident that we will be much improved. Last year at this time we have four starters returning; this year we have 13. I am hopeful that our experience can carry us through a very difficult schedule and our kids can reap the benefits of the countless hours they have dedicated themselves to Yukon football,” said coach Sauser. An important piece to the puzzle is back in quarterback Trevor Smith (6-2, 180, Sr.). Smith threw for nearly 2,400-yards and 16 touchdowns. With a season under his belt as a starter look for Smith to be more comfortable in the pocket and make reads he may not have made a season ago. Running back Michael Cooper (5-8, 175, Sr.) can take some of the pressure off the passing game by having another productive season. In 2015 Cooper rushed for 600 yards on 115 carries scoring two touchdowns. Wide receiver Jalen Barnes (6-1, 175, Jr.) looks to become the playmaker everyone believes he can be in the passing game. Barnes had 12 catches for 246 yards and three touchdowns last year; solid numbers, but Barnes

Madison Wrather would love to contribute more giving Smith a go-to target on crucial downs. The offensive line features Madison Wrather (6-5, 285, Sr.) at left tackle and Denton Sanchez (6-3, 305, Sr.) at left guard. Younger players are developing and look to shore up the offensive line as the season gets underway.

DEFENSE

After diving into the research coach Sauser and the defensive staff agreed the best scheme for the Millers is the 3-4. Daunte McGee (6-4, 215, Sr.) will start at outside linebacker this season after starting two years at safety. He’s also one of the players coach Sauser will use on offense as a receiver. McGee was named preseason All-VYPE and is expected to have a great year at linebacker. Ethan Scott (6-2, 185, Sr.) gets the nod at safety with Eddie Jackson (5-9, 160, Jr.) shoring up one of the corner positions. Chandler Rich (5-9, 175, Sr.) and Preston Hodge (6-0, 185, Jr.) join McGee at linebacker. Also look for defensive end Colton Duke (6-2, 210, Sr.) to provide a spark on the edge as Duke gives the Millers a presence on the edge. The first half of the schedule will be a good test for the Millers to gauge where they are as they host back-to-back home games against Mustang and Norman North.

Athlete of the Month Norman North Charlie Kolar

Norman North High School The Kolar name is certainly familiar to Norman North fans. Now a senior, Charlie Kolar looks to take his turn as the go-to player in the Norman North offense this season. Kolar was impressive last year averaging 17.7 yards per reception and accounted for 920 yards of production on offense. He also added 13 touchdowns giving him a total of 19 in his varsity career. Those numbers and his ability to play both tight end and wide receiver meant plenty of college recruiters would be competing for his services next year, but Kolar has decided to attend Iowa State University next fall. This offseason Kolar was selected to the

VYPE Top 100 placing him in the running for the title of Mr. Football Oklahoma and was a preseason All-VYPE selectee in Class 6A-1. If Kolar has the season everyone expects him to have, those honors will continue to pour in making this a season to remember for the senior. Head coach Brent Barnes will use a multiple set offense in the spread and utilize several of the weapons on the roster that can stretch the field. Joining Kolar in the receiving game are Drake Stoops, Landon McClellan and Collin Klein. This group of talented route runners give quarterback Brandon Marquardt four big targets downfield. Kolar the biggest

at 6-foot-6, has tight end size with wide receiver hands. Kolar leads by example and said the team is focused on making the most of every game this year. “We’re focused on getting better with every game and leaving it all on the field,” said Kolar. “My teammates and I have worked hard this summer and we’re looking forward to getting this season started.”

Quick Hits: Southmoore moves back into Norman North’s district for the first time since 2008. The Sabercats own the all-time series advantage 3-2.

Iowa State commit Charlie Kolar caught three touchdown passes in a 59-24 victory over Yukon in week two. Kolar totaled 13 touchdown receptions in 2015. The Timberwolves have beaten Moore ten consecutive times. Last 5 Years: 2015 - 7-4 2014 - 5-5 2013 - 7-4 2012 - 12-2 2011 – 6-5

2012 Nick Basquine 2013

Coach Brent Barnes took the Timberwolves to the quarterfinals of the Class 6AI state playoffs last season in his first campaign as head coach. Coach Barnes and the offensive staff have implemented the multiple set, spread offense utilizing their skill players in several creative ways. Tight end/ wide receiver Charlie Kolar (6-6, 230, Sr.) is one of those talented skill position players expected to have a major impact this season. Kolar, a VYPE Top 100 selectee, averaged 17.7 yards per catch with 920 total yards on the season. He also scored 13 touchdowns. Wide receiver Drake Stoops (5-10, 170, Jr.) caught 48 passes for 761 yards and four touchdowns. Between Kolar and Stoops, quarterback Brandon Marquardt (5-11, 190, Sr.) has two legitimate options in the passing game. As a junior Marquardt completed 36 passes for 821 yards and eight touchdowns to only two interceptions. Tight end Landon McClellan (6-3, 215, Sr.) is a big target and has shown he has the ability to run routes and to block. Collin Klein (6-2, 175, Sr.) is a threat to stretch the field with his speed. A year ago he recorded 18 receptions for 676 yards and scored seven touchdowns. With this many targets on the field, it’s easy to see why coach Barnes will run a spread offense. The offensive line features senior Brandon Shaw (6-3, 310) an immovable force at center.

Charlie Kolar - Cade Mashburn

DEFENSE

Early on the defense may be the strength for the Timberwolves. With eight returning starters on the field the experience should translate into near

mistake free football. Cade Mashburn (6-2, 210, Sr.) is the type of linebacker every high school coach wants and every college coach is look for to add to his roster. In 11 games Mashburn notched 108 tackles and a sack to lead the Timberwolves. Fellow linebacker Jay Bobb (5-11, 210, Sr.) added 80 tackles and two sacks last year making this duo one of the top pairs of linebackers in the state. Nose guard Gage Johnson (5-10, 300, Sr.) gets a lot of attention in the middle of the defensive line. Johnson accounted for 28 tackles and two sacks last season, but more importantly it takes a double, sometimes a triple team to stop him, which allows the linebackers to roam freely. Two solid safeties patrol the secondary in Ben Neighbors (5-10, 185, Sr.) and Andrew Schovanec (5-10, 175, Sr.). Schovanec had 80 tackles with two interceptions, while Schovanec had 26 tackles with three picks of his own. Corner Isaac Stoops (5-10, 165, Jr.) brings athleticism and determination to the field for the Timberwolves. Look for Stoops to have a breakout season in 2016. Look for the defense to chip away at the 30.6 points they allowed per game last year and give their offense more opportunities to put points on the board.

Quick Hits: Mustang appears on the schedule in week two for only the third time in the past ten years. The Broncos won the last meeting between the schools 34-14 in 2013. Norman travels to Ponca City for the first time since 1986. The Tigers have been waiting a long time for revenge in this series. Ponca eliminated Norman from the second round of the playoffs that year in a close 27-24 tilt.

The Norman Tigers continue to put the pieces together for what head coach Greg Nation calls a great group of kids with tremendous potential.

“If our season reflects the attitude and work ethic our players showed in the offseason, we are going to have a much better season,” said coach Nation. Dillon Dougherty (5-9, 185, Sr.) leads a senior laden offensive unit after rushing for 1,293 yards and eight touchdowns last season. Dougherty is thrilled to have a talented offensive line willing to do the dirty work up front and open holes in the running game. Hunt Sparks (6-4, 275, Sr.) will start at one tackle spot with Dami Oyesanya (6-3, 270, Sr.) playing the other. Both guys have exceptional size with the athleticism to block quick defensive ends. Trevor Hawkins (5-11, 265, Sr.)

The Tigers exploded for 56 points against Yukon in their lone win of the 2015 campaign. Dillon Dougherty had a night he will never forget carrying the football 42 times for 362 yards and five touchdowns. Last 5 Years: 2015 - 1-9 2 014 - 2-8 2013 - 5-5 2012 - 9-3 2011 – 7-4

will road grade the middle on the defense from his guard position. Also look for tight end Caleb Dean (6-3, 215, Sr.) to have more of an impact in the passing game this year. Dean is a large target and continues to improve in his ability to run routes. Look for the Tigers to run multiple sets and utilize the speed they have at the skill positions to move the chains and find the endzone. DEFENSE

Coach Tom Morrison takes over as defensive coordinator after coaching the secondary last season. Morrison also spent 12 years at Ada High School as an assistant. Morrison takes over a defense with some serious talent that includes the formidable David Ray (6-2, 285, Sr.) at defensive tackle. In the 3-3 scheme Ray can shine as the dominant player inside coach Morrison and coach Nation believes he can be for the Tigers. One player with the numbers to back up the hype is Dionta Defreeze (5-10, 205, Sr.). Defreeze led the Tigers in tackles last season with 144 to his credit and one interception. Now a senior, Defreeze is proving to Class 6A and college recruiters that he has the ability to suffocate the run game in 6A and the talent to play at the next level. Gaylan Randle (6-1, 215, Jr.) gets the nod at defensive end where his length and quickness off the edge will come into play. JJ Schied (6-0, 170, Sr.) logged 32 tackles last season, but he also picked off six passes to lead the Tiger secondary. Schied wants the same type of production this year. As does fellow corner Traevon Edmundson (5-10, 175, Jr.). Edmundson had 24 tackles and two interceptions last year. Strong safety Mark Williams (61, 180, Jr.) was extremely productive from his safety position last year recording 86 tackles on the season. Since 2010 the Tigers are 33-31 and 3-17 in the last two season. Don’t expect that trend to continue. Knowing this coaching staff and the work they put in to making this Tiger program a competitor again, the Tigers have a real shot at winning five games and if the ball bounces their way could possibly compete for the fourth playoff spot in 6AI-1.

USAO SOCCER PLAYERS LEARN, PLAY IN COSTA RICA TRIP The USAO trio joined a team of all-conference honorees and statistical leaders from colleges across the country to take on Costa Rica’s top club teams, including junior national players.

In addition to the competition component of the trip, athletes also provided sports clinics for Costa Rican youth. One clinic was hosted at a local school in San Jose, and another in partnership with Special Olympics of Costa Rica. “We were beyond blessed to have been given the opportunity to play abroad. None of us would have gotten there without the help of Coach (Jimmy) Hampton,” Cleveland said. “It was an amazing trip, and I will never forget the memories and friendships I made there.” By Justin Tinder, USAO Sports Information Director Three members of the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma women’s soccer team recently enjoyed the chance to study abroad while participating in an eight-day playing tour of Costa Rica.

Piedmont’s Bianca Cardenas, Mustang’s Brandi Hutchison, and Moore’s Jordan Cleveland traveled to the Central America country earlier this summer for Beyond Sports’ Fourth Annual Costa Rica Women’s Soccer Tour.

Hampton who has had a number of players play and study abroad over the years was pleased that the latest group experienced so many new things.

“Any time you get to experience the culture of football overseas it brings a new perspective on how to approach the game and the prep and process involved,” Hampton said. “I’m excited that our Bianca, Brandi and Jordan got that once-in-alifetime opportunity.”

The group visited Manuel Antonio National Park and Arenal Volcano during the tour. They also had opportunities to zip-line through the rainforest, learn to surf, and encounter wildlife such as monkeys, sloths, toucans and iguanas.

Hutchison said one of the big impressions she gained was how much impact that the tour group made the participants of the youth camps.

“Even though I don’t speak Spanish, it was really enjoyable to see the young kids having so much fun doing even the simplest drills,” Hutchison said. “Many of them had never had any formal training and basic skills like passing and dribbling around cones was all new to them. Watching their confidence grow daily, seeing the pride they took in learning new things is something I will remember for a very long time.” Many of the college players that participated in the tour were from NAIA and NCAA Division II and III schools. Those who were on the same team as the USAO trio were from Maine, Virginia, Florida, California, Missouri and Texas. “I think all three of us got a different perspective on how to better appreciate our lifestyles that we enjoy in America. I take lot of things for granted that you don’t normally have in other countries.,” Hutchison said. “We had to raise our own money for the tour, but it was worth every dollar for what we learned from it.” Beyond Sports, founded in 2010, is the first study abroad program designed specifically for studentathletes. To date, they have hosted athletes from over 200 different colleges across the country through summer and semester programs in Costa Rica and South Africa.

Quick Hits: The Titans are accustomed to doing battle with Class 5A foe Lawton Mac but will face Lawton High for the first time on September 2nd when the Wolverines come to Jim Harris Stadium in Midwest City. Duncan is not on the regular season schedule for the first time since 2005. Carl Albert has won 16 in a row in the series last losing in 1989. OFFENSE Make no mistake, Carl Albert is focused and fired up for this season. The 4-3 district record in 2015 was certainly below the normal standards for the Titans. That’s why the seniors on this squad are ready to get 2016 underway. Diego Richards (5-7, 151, Jr.) set a receiving record for the Titans last year with his 893 yards on 47 receptions and eight touchdowns. Richards is a versatile player that contributes in the running game and returns kicks. Braden Pursell (5-11, 188, Sr.) is another big playmaker in the passing game for coach Rose. Pursell grabbed 25 receptions for 411 yards and three scores last year. Throwing to this talented crop of receivers is quarterback Johnny Bizzell (6-1, 181, Sr.). A dual-threat with the ball, Bizzell has the speed to make a defense pay with his legs and the arm strength to throw the tough out-routes and the deep balls. Jaedon Pool (6-1, 162, Jr.) is a receiver to look for this season. The coaching staff has high hopes he can become one of the go-to wide outs this year. On the offensive line the Titans will look to Branton Swanner (6-0, 220, Sr.) at center to direct traffic up front. Tight end Jake Hill (6-6, 210, Sr.) has improved in every aspect of the tight end position. With good hands and the ability to reach second level blocks, Hill will certainly get a lot of attention from opposing linebackers. “We have lots of potential with our skill position players. But we have lots of work to do and holes to fill on the offensive line,” said Rose.

DEFENSE The Titans return their top tackler from 2015 in R.J. Sherman (5-11, 188, Sr.) at linebacker where he accounted for 118 tackles as a junior. Sherman is the type of player every coach would love to have on their roster. Sherman hits like a tank and calls the plays like a field general. Lamar Scott-Johnson (5-9, 220, Sr.) will start on the defensive line with defensive end Brylan LeBlanc (6-0, 190, Sr.). LeBlanc grabbed 65 tackles last year thanks to his ability to turn the corner and his speed to run down plays.

Daytawion Lowe 2007 David Oku 2008 Christian Smith 2008 Daytawion Lowe 2008 J.T. Realmuto 2009 Tre Porter 2009 Steven Thompson 2012 Caleb Holland 2012

The secondary is loaded with talented players like corner Zane Alexander (5-10, 152, Jr.). Alexander had a team best four interceptions a year ago. Jason Taylor (6-0, 162, Jr.) and Trajan Lands (5-10, 158, Jr.) are two safeties roaming the deep waters like sharks looking to attack. Taylor and Lands are tremendous at stopping the run and preventing the big plays in the passing game. Legendary coach Tex Rollins is retiring from coaching. Rollins, originally from Terrell Texas, played football at East Central State College, served in Vietnam, taught and coached at Byng High School and Carl Albert High School, and retired from the Oklahoma National Guard. Rollins has served as head track coach and assistant football coach for years at Carl Albert. In 2013 Rollins was inducted into the Keefer Educator’s Hall of Fame at East Central University in 2013. Congratulations to coach Tex Rollins on a storied career.

Quick Hits: Lawton Eisenhower drops down to Class 5A this season and will remain on the non-district portion of the Del City schedule. Del City defeated Ike 41-14 in 2015, winning for the first time in the series since 2000. Since moving the Sooner Road rivalry against Midwest City from week one, the Eagles have won four straight season openers. McGuinness fills the opening bill this year in what will be the first ever meeting between the schools. 5 Years: 2015 - 6-5 2014 - 6-6 2013 - 7-4 2012 – 9-2 2011 – 1-9

OFFENSE The retirement of long time head coach Nick Warehime has many Del City fans curious as to what new head coach Jake Corbin has in store for the program. “I am truly blessed to coach these young men and I wake up each day excited to continue our journey together,” said coach Corbin. “You will see a team that enjoys being around each other and has a great time. Our brand of football is fun and fast. Our players love the game and are an absolute joy to coach.” Coach Corbin continues to add to the coaching staff, but one area that’s of no concern is wide receiver. Cecil Cole (6-1, 185, Sr.) and Isaac Beverly (6-3, 185, Jr.) could be the best wide out tandem in Class 5A. Cole recorded 33 receptions for 694 yards and scored eight touchdowns last season, while Beverly had 12 receptions for 250 yards. Kelin Gordon (6-1, 175, Sr.) may be the sleeper this year for coach Corbin. Gordon has the size and speed to go with what coach Corbin describes as “great character and a physical talent.” Running back Ochai Boykins (5-10, 215, Jr.) averaged 7.1 yards per carry and punched it into the endzone four times. A big reason the running game is working so well for the Eagles is Chase Holland (6-0, 245, Sr.) and Dylan Clark (6-2, 270, Sr.). Their senior leadership should help younger, inexperienced linemen in practice and in games. DEFENSE The 3-4 scheme coach Corbin is implementing will

depend largely on the pressure they can get from the defensive line. Mike Pope (6-1, 265, Jr.) and Javel Bizzell (6-2, 290, Sr.) will play major roles in the overall success of the defense. Myles Alexander (5-10, 205, Sr.) leads a talented bunch of linebackers this year. Alexander is the type of player coaches love to turn loose and get after opposing offenses. Joining Alexander is fellow senior Tre Wright (5-7, 165). Wright has the speed to run down any quarterback in the class and the football smarts to read the offense and attack the play. One area that may quietly become the best unit for the Eagles this year is the secondary. Anthony Goodlow (6-4, 210, Jr.) and Sheldon Trotter (5-10, 170, Sr.) play a physical style without getting penalties. Expectations on the secondary is high due to the number of schools that prefer to air it out, but look for this group of playmakers to meet those expectations and to find a way to help this program to the playoffs. Spend any time with coach Corbin and you’ll begin to understand that he’s not just focused on developing a winning program, he’s focused on turning these student-athletes into exceptional people. That attitude will carry over onto the field and this squad will begin to resemble a family and not just another football team

Coach: TONY MERRELL Enrollment: 213

CHRISTIAN HERITAGE CRUSADERS

Schedule: Aug. 26 – vs. Will Rogers Sept. 2 – vs. Okemah Sept. 9 – at Mount St. Mary Sept. 16 – at OCS Sept. 23 – vs. Northeast Sept. 30 – at Millwood Oct. 7 – vs. Crooked Oak Oct. 14 – at Luther Oct. 21 – at Stroud Oct. 28 – Open Nov. 4 – vs. Meeker Last 5 Years: 2015 - 5-6 2014 - 9-3 2013 - 8-4 2012 - 5-6 2011 - 5-5

OFFENSE Christian Heritage football looks to take district 2A-2 by storm this year. Head coach Tony Merrell enters his eighth season at CHA, his third as head coach, and his roster is full of talent. Quarterback Camden Cargill (6-0, 205, Jr.) completed 160 of 280 passes last year for 2,115 yards and 22 touchdowns. Maybe even more impressive is he was only picked off eight times. Cargill also rushed for 244 yards on 49 carries with three touchdowns. Cargill has plenty of targets in the passing game including wide receiver Bridge Bullard (5-10, 175, So.) and tight end Seth Hale (5-11, 190, Sr.). Bullard, a two-way player, caught 12 balls for 131 yards and three touchdowns last year, while Hale had seven receptions for 88 yards. Zach Hale (6-2, 205, So.) is a young receiver with tremendous potential. As a freshman Hale caught seven passes for 99 yards and a touchdown. Senior Clay Buchanan (5-11, 185) is another weapon in the passing game as well as special teams. As a kicker Buchanan hit 17-of-22 PAT’s last year. “Really excited about this group of guys. This is a team that is built for success. We need to have a great summer to build momentum for the regular season,” said coach Merrell.

DEFENSE With 10 returning starters on defense the Knights appear to have the upper hand on the rest of 2A-2. One reason is the play of strong safety Tatum Chapman (6-0, 190, Sr.). Experienced, intelligent, and physical, Chapman logged 133 tackles, two interceptions and forced a fumble last year as a junior. He also contributes to the offense as a wide receiver. Another two-way player expected to have a great year is linebacker Gunner Bullard (5-10, 175, Sr.). Bullard finished the 2015 season with 104 tackles, one sack, four QB hurries and two forced fumbles. Solid production for Bullard at the linebacker spot. Outside linebacker Hutch Hendrickson (6-2, 165, Jr.) is a quick LB slippery enough to find his way to the backfield. Hendrickson notched three sacks last season to go with his 64 tackles. Aiden Ferguson (6-1, 185, Jr.) joins the linebacker corps where his athleticism will shine. Ferguson had 93 tackles and four sacks last year and who can forget his interception return for touchdown? Cooper Bullard (6-2, 160, Jr.) has great size at corner and will look to match up with their opponent’s top receiver. Nose guard Josh Condreay (5-11, 200, So.) had 31 tackles as a freshman and will continue to develop into the menace in the middle coach Merrell needs in his 3-4 scheme. “The defense is built up the middle with Condreay at nose, Bullard at LB and Chapman at safety,” said Merrell.

The Bombers are looking to make a statement in 2016 as head coach Darrell Hall wants to establish the run and bring back the “tough man game” to Midwest City. “Our motto in 2016 is “Impose Our Will,” said coach Hall.

Quick Hits: Midwest City will open the 2016 season against Muskogee. It will be the first ever regular season meeting between the schools which do have some gridiron history together. Mike Gundy led Midwest City to a 40-36 conquest of the Roughers in the 1985 Class 5A state championship.

The Bombers tangle with the Choctaw Yellowjackets on October 7th. Midwest City has won seven in a row in the series last losing in 1998. Midwest City hosts Lawton on September 23rd. The Wolverines have won the past three meetings in the series. Midwest City’s last win came in 2005 Last 5 Years: 2015 - 6-4 2014 - 7-3 2013 - 9-3 2012 - 3-7 2011 – 11-1

DeClaudin Irvin (5-10, 160, Jr.) had 30 receptions for 386 yards and figures heavily into the passing game for the Bombers. Quarterback Preston Colbert (5-10, 180, So.) is young but has experience at the varsity level. In limited action Colbert completed nine passes for 118 yards and a touchdown. Colbert has shown he has the arm and the wheels to lead this team. A pair of running backs will balance out the attack. Astin Anderson (5-10, 186, Jr.) and Jacob Reed (5-11, 200, Jr.) are a tough one-two punch. Anderson was productive last season rushing for 647 yards on more than 100 attempts. Jawan Walker (5-10, 175, Jr.) has the speed to stretch the field giving Colbert a deep threat. Walker and Anderson could be factors in the return game as well. Morgan Moore (6-5, 263, Jr.) is the top returning offensive lineman for the Bombers. Moore has the size coaches at the next level love. Look for the big man to continue improving as the season gets closer to the playoffs. Semaj Donner (6-0, 170) could see time at quarterback this season or be used at another skill position giving coach Hall another weapon on the field. DEFENSE

Safety Evan Fields (6-2, 200, Sr.) brings so much to the field for the Bombers. Statistically he had 126 tackles with three interceptions and five pass breakups, but possibly more important than that he is a leader on and off the field. Fields is a DI prospect along with linebacker Demontre Gatewood (6-1, 205, Sr.). Gatewood had 51 tackles

Evan Fields with two sacks and one fumble recovery in 2015, but his potential to be a difference maker at the next level has college coaches watching game tape and figuring out how they can convince him to join their squad for the 2017 season. Reed will join Gatewood at linebacker giving the Bombers another productive player at the position. Reed had 82 tackles and five sacks last season. Markus Herd (6-3, 360, Sr.) is the perfect nose guard in the 4-2-5 defense. Also look for Arlenza Whittenberg (5-9, 167, Sr.) in the secondary. Whittenberg had one interception and 54 tackles a year ago. The defense may be the strength for Midwest City this season. If they can get stops and create turnovers to give the offense more snaps, the Bombers could be a serious contender this year. Another tough schedule will test them, but playing in tough games is something the Bombers expect every season.

Go Bombers! Ben Sexton

Athlete of the Month Potawatomi Creed Humphrey

Shawnee High School For more than a year Shawnee High School varsity football player Creed Humphrey has been one of the more highly recruited football players in the state of Oklahoma. His journey from young football hopeful to top division I recruit has been filled with hard work and a dedication to becoming an all-star on the field and in the classroom. Looking back on his time at Shawnee, Humphrey said his father has played a major role in helping with everything from football to life in general. “My dad has been the biggest influence in my life. He has taught me everything from technique in the sports I play to spiritual and life lessons.” Being a member of the Potawatomi Tribe is something that helps fuel Humphrey’s desire

to become a great football player and a great representative of the community. “Being a part of the Potawatomi tribe gives me a great sense of pride,” said Humphrey. And that sense of pride drives Humphrey to always be his absolute best at whatever he’s doing in life. At Shawnee High School Humphrey is a member of the National Honor Society, the Leadership Council and wrestles for the varsity wrestling team. His involvement in other activities outside of sports shows his leadership and determination to become a well-rounded student athlete. Leadership is something he has learned from his family, his coaches and the Potawatomi Tribe.

Seth Jackson – Bethel High School A sophomore student at Bethel High School, Seth Jackson has been around showing and the FFA since he was 10 years old, but has only been in the Ag class for two years. Despite his short time in FFA Jackson brings a lot of experience thanks in part to his sister Kelsey who was in FFA, showed and was an FFA officer.

“I love being around FFA members through 4-H so I continued my plans into the Ag Classroom,” said Jackson. Thanks to the encouragement of a former teacher at Bethel. Being a part of the program has helped Jackson in many ways including public speaking and meeting new people.

“I love meeting new people. I’ve never met a stranger. I love talking to new people and even in front of large groups. I also love how much of an impact its made on my life. It’s helped me be a better leader,” said Jackson.

Jackson shows swine, raising his own projects and enjoys watching them develop and grow. Since he started Ag Jackson has received the Star Discovery Award for the most outstanding 8th grader and the Star Greenhand Award given to the most outstanding 9th grader in the Ag class. For the upcoming school year Jackson was elected to serve as a Bethel FFA Reporter. After high school Jackson plans to possibly attend a twoyear school then transfer to a four-year school for sports medicine and physical therapy. Jackson offers this advice to any student considering joining the FFA.

“I’ve always told people to go for it. FFA is great. It’s helped me in many ways. I think kids that have doubts about going to FFA should throw them out and join the greatest organization there is,” said Jackson.

Quick Hits: The football Wolves can look to coach Todd Boyer's baseball team for a little inspiration. Shawnee has won backto-back state championships on the diamond.

Guthrie appears on the regular season schedule for the first time since 2009. The Bluejays bounced the Wolves out of the playoffs in 2013 with a narrow 2321 win. Shawnee won the last regular season matchup 33-23. Last 5 Years: 2015 - 3-6 2014 - 8-4 2013 - 9-3 2012 - 6-5 2011 – 1-9

Jack Diamond OFFENSE The Shawnee Wolves offense has a lot to be excited about this season. Head coach Billy Brown returns six starters to the field including one of the highest recruited kids in the state on the offensive line. But coach Brown admits the schedule the Wolves face this season is the toughest one they have seen in a while. Creed Humphrey (6-5, 315, Sr.) has commited to Texas A&M, but before Humphrey steps foot on campus as a college player he looks to help this Wolves team to their first state title since 2003. Humphrey is one of the most athletic offensive linemen to come out of Oklahoma and one player thrilled to have him as a teammate is quarterback Jack Diamond (6-2, 190, Sr.). Diamond, an exciting player in his own right, threw for more than 2,800 yards and 26 touchdowns last season making him one of the more productive quarterbacks in the class. Tyree York (5-9, 170, Sr.) will start at wide out giving the Wolves and Diamond a deep threat on any given play. York has the speed of a track star and can stretch a defense. Brayden McGinnis (6-3, 215, So.) is a young, but powerful running back Shawnee is excited to get going behind this offensive line. Logan Clark (6-3, 250, Sr.) is a twoyear starter on the line giving Diamond another big man up front with experience and toughness. DEFENSE Fast is the best way to describe the defense for Shawnee. Humphrey will play nose guard in

the middle of the 3-4 scheme giving opposing offensive lines all sorts of problems. Last season Humphrey recorded 67 tackles, while Clark had 54 from his defensive end position. Spencer Gordon (5-11, 215, Sr.) is a vacuum at linebacker. Gordon accounted for 88 tackles last year. Calib McClaurin (5-10, 195, Sr.) gets the nod at end opposite of Clark where he recorded 37 tackles a year ago. DJ Storie (6-0, 250, Jr.) is another powerful defensive lineman opposing offenses will be forced to pay attention to as the Wolves look to pressure the backfield on every play. Also look for McGinnis at linebacker this season. Coach Brown said the team needs to stay healthy this season, but excited for this group of seniors to get their shot. Non-district games against Guthrie, Duncan and Booker T. Washington will be a good test for the team before they start district play on the road to East Central.

Having a three-way battle at the quarterback position means you’re deep at the position and you have guys willing to compete. Both are key components for the building blocks of a successful season.

Quick Hits: Putnam North remains on the schedule for the third consecutive season. The Yellowjackets have dropped seven straight contests in the series last winning 21-14 in 2006. Running back Tyrel Bell rides into 2016 with a hot hand. Bell scored a touchdown in the Yellowjackets final four games of the 2015 season, including a 35-yard burst to open the scoring against Lawton.

The Yellowjackets will go for their fourth straight win over Enid on September 30th. The last three have been high scoring affairs with Choctaw winning by an average margin of 39-31. Last 5 Years: 2015 - 5-6 2014 - 7-4 2013 - 3-7 2012 - 1-8 2011 – 1-9

Tyrel Bell

One position not up for grabs for head coach Todd Dilbeck is running back. A VYPE Top 100 selectee, Tyrell Bell (5-10, 220, Sr.) proved to be worth the price of admission last year when he rushed for 722 yards. A four-year starter for the Yellowjackets, Bell is an integral part of the offense and someone the opposing defense must account for on every play. Wide receiver Ethan Crews (5-10, 160, Jr.) returns as the teams top wide out. In 2015 Crews had 18 receptions for 379 yards and five touchdowns. Senior Drew Myrick (6-2, 160, Sr.) added 240 yards to the receptions total in only his first year of football. One area the Yellowjackets are solid is the offensive line. Deagan Manley (6-4, 300, Sr.) is the returning starter at right tackle, while Tarin Clark (6-0, 225, Sr.) makes all of the offensive line calls from his center position. Add right guard Chaden Mielke (6-3, 275, Jr.) to the mix and you have a group of linemen that can move the masses. “We have made it to the playoffs in back-to-back seasons for the first time in 31 years of Choctaw football history, but we want more, we want to advance beyond the first round. Our goal is as always, a state championship,” said coach Dilbeck. DEFENSE

Defensively the Yellowjackets look impressive with six returning starters returning to the field. Jaryn Curry (5-8, 175, Jr.) registered 158 tackles, 16 of those were for a loss. Curry, a

BETHEL WILDCATS OFFENSE Coach Jason Madonna enters his fourth year has head coach of the Bethel Wildcats and is excited to see what the upcoming season holds for his team. “We will be relying on a group of young players and new players to continue improving the program. We expect Austin Acklin to break out at quarterback along with the running game of Peyton Barney and the receiving ability of James Lindsay,” said coach Madonna. Austin Acklin (6-0, 160, Sr.) leads this young, but talented group into the 2016 season. Acklin will get some help with a strong running game. Peyton Barney (5-8, 155, Jr.) can give the Wildcats solid production from his tailback position and relieve some of the pressure on Acklin. Up front Garrett Hopkins (61, 215, Jr.) may become the cornerstone of a young offensive line. With only three starters returning to

state champions wrestler, is tenacious from his linebacker position and loves to deliver the hit. Fellow linebacker Christian Smay (6-0, 215, Sr.) only saw action on a part time basis and still accounted for 18 tackles. Smay adds size and speed to an already solid linebacker corps. Tae Gibbs (5-10, 160, Jr.) is the speedster in the secondary for the Yellowjackets. A member of the 4X200 and 4X400 track teams that placed at state, Gibbs has shown he can perform in all aspects of the game. He recorded 52 tackles and two interceptions last season. Like the offensive line, the defensive line has a plethora of talent. Talon Unruh (6-2, 260, Sr.) rotated in and out last year but still managed to grab 28 tackles for his DT spot. Zac Huston (6-1, 190, Sr.) like Unruh, spent much of his time rotating in, but contributed 22 tackles to the defensive effort. Bell will provide the Yellowjackets with some quality time on the line. Last year he forced two fumbles and has 61 career tackles. “Defensively we’re switching to a 3-3-5 structure. We’ll be very aggressive and athletic on defense. We feel like we’ll be playing one of the most athletic defenses in Choctaw history,” said coach Dilbeck. Any way you crack it 6AII-1 is tough to win with Lawton, Midwest City and a surging Putnam City West, but Choctaw may have an answer that will land them in the playoffs and playing beyond the first round.

the field for the Wildcats, it will be important the new guys step up and fill in where needed. DEFENSE The secondary is the strength for the Wildcats on defense. Acklin, Barney and Lindsay will all play key roles as defensive backs. Hopkins will start at defensive end. In the 3-5-3 scheme the Wildcats will need to find several young linebackers that are hungry for playing time and looking to make a difference for this football team. “Defensively we will rely on our quickness to help us make big plays in the backfield,” said coach Madonna. Some changes have been made to the coaching staff with only two coaches returning from the 2015 team. PURCELL DRAGONS

OFFENSE With six starters returning to the field, first year head coach John Higbee will have some experience on offense to lean on as he implements a new offense for the Dragons. A couple of players will compete for the starting quarterback job in Dillon Cook (6-2, 170, Sr.) and Jarrett Sweeney (6-0, 185, Sr.). Both players are athletic and bring senior leadership to the huddle. Whoever does get the job will have a pair of sure-handed receivers to throw to in Omar Brown (5-11, 165, Sr.) and Tate Grissom (5-11, 150, Sr.). Coach Higbee wants to run the Multiple-I formation using his wide receivers in various ways. Running back Isaiah Couch (5-10, 205, Jr.) will play a large role in getting the offense going this season. Couch is a powerful runner when squared up can run over any would-be tackler. Up front the Dragons will look to Kyle Varnor (6-0, 270, Sr.) to lead the offensive line and help younger linemen with their assignments. DEFENSE Like the offense, the defense returns six starts including strong safety Waylon Steiner (5-9, 160, Jr.). Steiner could see time at running back on offense, but the coaches are ex-

WASHINGTON WARRIORS OFFENSE There is a ton of excitement around the Washington football program thanks in part to the return of Tyler Stuever (6-0, 202, Jr.). Last season Stuever rushed for 1,493 yards and 22 touchdowns with 532 yards receiving. His production garnered several awards including District Newcomer of the Year, Little All-City 2015 and was recently named to the VYPE Top 100. A great running game can open up a great passing game and quarterback Kylen Lanham (5-10, 165, Sr.) is itching to get back on the field after he threw for over 2,700 yards last season. But no one gains a yard if the offensive line isn’t clicking and up front for the Warriors it all starts with center Hudson Horton (6-1, 265, Sr.). Horton will call the blocking assignments and make sure his guys are hitting on all cylinders. Guard Tyler Thompson (6-0, 271, Jr.) started all 13 games as a sophomore and tackle Cale Winton (6-0, 262, Jr.) has started since the 8th week of his freshman year. This salty group of linemen will be a big reason the Warriors are successful this season. Making his return to the lineup is running back Josh Banks. Banks was suffered an injury as a junior, but is expected to carry a big load for the

cited to see him play safety this season. Ethan Wayland (6-0, 170, Jr.) is a multipurpose player on the both sides of the ball. Talented enough to play quarterback if necessary; Wayland has the speed to play safety and the pop to play outside linebacker. Dylan Collateta (6-1, 265, Sr.) may start at defensive end giving the coaching staff an edge setter and a quarterback chaser. Dillon Kimbrell (6-2, 210, Jr.) is another defensive end that gets after the quarterback and is athletic enough to run running backs down from behind. Brett Webb (5-8, 195, Sr.) and Brady Barrett (6-3, 210, Sr.) are two solid linebackers with varsity experience the Dragons will depend on heavily in the 50 defense.

Warriors this season. Needless to say the Warrior faithful are proud of this team and are excited to see what 2016 has in store. DEFENSE Key positions like linebacker and positions on the line are open for competition as the coaching staff looks to fill in where graduation Tyler Stuever left some holes. One linebacker returning to the lineup is Dilon Sanders (5-9, 175, Sr.). Last year Sanders recorded 84 tackles and returns as the teams leading tackler. Nick Foster (5-9, 164, Sr.) returns after an ACL injury in week five last year. Foster had 22 tackles before the injury. Corners Brandon Harmon (5-10, 162, Sr.) and Logan Clemence (5-10, 160, Jr.) secure the defensive backfield. The combo accounted for more than 50 tackles with Harmon picking off two passes. Add safety Garrett Wilson (5-11, 166, Jr.) to the mix and you have one of the best groups of DB’s in the class. Wilson was a beast at safety notching 51 solo tackles and picking off four passes, all as a sophomore. “We have a very good returning nucleus, but defending the district title will depend upon the upcoming sophomore class,” said coach Beller.

HERITAGE HALL CHARGERS

Coach: BRETT BOGERT Enrollment: 345

Schedule: Sept. 2 – vs. John Marshall Sept. 9 – at Madill Sept. 16 – at Davis Sept. 23 – vs. Clinton Sept. 30 – at Weatherford Oct. 6 – vs. Chickasha Oct. 14 – at Elgin Oct. 21 – vs. Newcastle Oct. 28 – at Cache Nov. 4 – at Elk City

Quick Hits: The Chargers carry a state longest 27game winning streak into 2015 moving up into Class 4A for the first time in school history.

The Polo Bowl is no more. Heritage Hall traditionally opened the season with Casady but the Cyclones decided against continuing the rivalry going forward. The teams have met every year since 1976 with the Chargers winning 26 of those 39 meetings and 10 of the last 11. Class 4A better prepare itself to defend Chargers quarterback Blake Adams. The sophomore had a banner campaign including throwing for a 75-yard touchdown pass and returning a fumble 31 yards for a defensive score in a 41-6 quarterfinal win over Hilldale. Last 5 Years: 2015 - 15-0 2014 - 14-1 2013 - 6-5 2012 - 8-4 2011- 12-1

OFFENSE The Chargers move up to Class 4A after streaking past the best Class 3A had to offer the last two years. And the results might not differ much against larger schools in 2016. There are some notable holes to fill, but Heritage Hall has proven it can seamlessly rebuild around a core of experience. You can check off any concern at quarterback. Blake Adams (6-1, 170, Jr.) simply made it look easy as a sophomore. Adams was accurate; 104-157 for 35 touchdowns and only four interceptions. He took chances; an average of more than twenty yards per completion. And he was diverse; rushing for 420 yards and six more scores. The Chargers had so many big leads in 2015, many players saw significant action. That lessens the blow of losing mega stars Tank Love and Tevin McDaniel to graduation. Dawson Evans (5-10, 195, Sr.) rushed for two touchdowns and caught 14 passes for 209 yards and three touchdowns. He can line up either at running back or receiver. His role might increase on offense this fall after playing a vital role last year on defense at free safety. Bryce Soberanis (5-6, 155, Jr.) is quick and slippery. He was an excellent compliment to Love a year ago and should be more than adequate if featured out of the backfield. Soberanis ran for 494 years and seven touchdowns as a sophomore. Morgan Dinwiddie should throw his hat in the ring with break out potential at running back. Seven more touchdowns were scored by Santana Randle (5-9, 165, Sr.) at receiver. Randle and Chandler Shapard (6-0, 165, Jr.) headline what will be a busy rotation at receiver. The biggest rebuilding job is on the offensive line. That work will

commence around veteran Jack Ross (6-1, 250, Sr.). A four-year starter, Ross has drawn attention from the Ivy League and should have more scholarship offers soon come. DEFENSE - What Heritage Hall lacks in size, it should make up with aggressiveness. Speed is everywhere. Ross will come off the edge with strength and speed while players who have paid their dues get comfortable with bigger roles. Grayson Wilson (6-0, 205, Jr.) provided 67 tackles, two sacks and two interceptions to the efforts at linebacker in 2015. The rest of the returning experience is in the secondary, highlighted by Dawson Evans. A defender with great versatility, Evans moved around frequently lining up anywhere from free safety or nearer to the line of scrimmage as an hybrid outside linebacker. Evans made 114 tackles, forced four fumbles and three fumble recoveries. Playing both ways didn’t bother Blake Adams. He recorded 69 tackles and picked off four passes at safety. Santana Randle and Callahan Walker (5-10, 155, Sr.) each have starting experience in the secondary and combined for 56 tackles and four interceptions. Most importantly, these small and quick Chargers know how to win. Expectations and tradition is passed down and should resonate with this group.

OFFENSE

The Pirates have a lot to be excited about this season with the return of five starters to the offensive side of the ball. Head coach Preston Pearson wants to run the spread offense getting the ball in the hands of his skill players in space. But he’s looking for more than just playmakers; coach Pearson is looking for leaders.

Schedule: Sept. 2 – vs. Putnam City North Sept. 9 – Open Sept. 16 – at Bixby Sept. 23 – vs. Choctaw Sept. 30 – at Lawton Oct. 7 – at Putnam City West Oct. 14 – vs. Deer Creek Oct. 20 – at Midwest City Oct. 28 – vs. Stillwater Nov. 4 – vs. Enid

“We want players to commit to being a part of something bigger than themselves. We need consistency with our players if we are to have a real shot,” said coach Pearson.

Quick Hits: The Pirates won their final two games of the regular season to qualify for the playoffs for the first time since 2008.

Allen Bumgardner 1960 Greg Burns 1960 Bob Watts 1961 Bud Townsend 1962 Buddy Burris 1963 Greg Pinkerton 1966 Lindy Pearson 1967 Mike Worley 1967 Billy Sanders 1969 Ron Boyer 1970

Putnam City’s 60-44 playoff clinching win over Westmoore was the most points scored by a Pirates team since a 69-34 effort against Mustang in week seven of 2011. The Pirates enter the season with a two-game winning streak against Edmond Memorial. Braden Hudson connected with Drey Christon on two fourth quarter touchdown passes to give Putnam City a 31-30 win in week five. Last 5 Years: 2015 - 5-6 2014 - 3-7 2013 - 2-8 2012 - 6-4 2011 – 6-4

Zach Hester (6-5, 235, Sr.) moves to tight end after a stint at quarterback last season. Hester is athletic enough to play nearly any position on the field. Dariyon Weeden (6-2, 303, Sr.) at tackle and Marcus Capps (5-10, 255, Jr.) at center shore up the offensive line, which will be important for the new quarterback, Amareion “AJ” Newsome (5-10, 165, So.). Newsome transferred in from Allen, TX and his expected to earn the starting job this summer. Wide receivers Devin Reed (5-10, 165, Sr.) and Keair Wilkins (5-9, 150, Jr.) are speedy wide outs with big play capabilities. Combined the pair accounted for more than 450 yards and five touchdowns last year. Coach Pearson is giving the receivers an opportunity to prove themselves and contribute to the overall success of the team. Their development will help to serve this Pirate team, as opponents will look to stop the running game first. DEFENSE

Like the offense, the defense returns five starters from last year’s team that went 5-6. Returning corner Eric Butler (5-10, 155, Jr.) had 36 tackles and two interceptions last season and will look to lead this Pirate secondary. Outside linebacker J’Lyn Bryant (6-1, 230, Sr.) and inside linebacker Raylon Welch (5-9, 185, Sr.) give the Pirates a pair of hardcore head-knockers in the middle. Bryant recorded 40 tackles a year ago, while Welch had 40 tackles and a fumble recovery. Pay attention to the play at defensive end this season as Ron Tatum (6-5, 243, Jr.) and Collin Clay (6-4, 220, So.)

Devin Reed are looking to turn up the heat on the quarterbacks in 6AII-1. Kevonte’ Lloyd (5-9, 157, Jr.) will roam the secondary with Butler as he looks to have another productive season at corner. The emotional leader of this defense may be Bryant. Coach Pearson describes Bryant as a positive person who lives every day like a champion. If Bryant can rally other players to step up and be leaders for the younger underclassmen, the Pirates have an opportunity to grow this team and the program into a contender in Class 6AII. The Pirate faithful are hungry for this team to make some waves in the playoffs

Quick Hits: The Panthers are coming off a 2-8 finish in 2015. The last time Putnam North failed to win three or more games was 1987. Putnam North defeated Moore 28-20 on October 15th, extending its winning streak to 11 straight in the series. Dating back to 1995, Putnam North and Putnam City Original have each won eleven games in the Battle for the Expressway. Putnam City won last year’s matchup 17-14. Last 5 Years: 2015 - 2-8 2014 - 4-6 2013 - 4-6 2012 - 6-5 2011 – 4-6

The Panthers have plenty to be excited about this upcoming season; a new head coach in Ryan Laverty, a DI prospect in Andre Harris Jr. and an offense that returns seven starters to the field. Coach Laverty wants to turn up the heat with an up-tempo, no huddle offense using his skill players to keep the pressure on the defense and run their tanks to empty.

Andre Harris Jr. (6-5, 315, Sr.) may be the best point guard in the state, but he’s also one of the top offensive linemen. The left tackle is a leader on and off the field giving the Panthers some needed leadership in the locker room and in the huddle. Guard Donald Stearns (6-0, 245, Sr.) shores up the line for coach Laverty and offensive line coach Bill Gallop. Grant Lyda (6-3, 160, Jr.) will start at quarterback where he threw for 493 yards and three touchdowns last season. Lyda also rushed for 194 yards averaging 5.1 yards per carry. Running back Jalen Baker (5-7, 165, Sr.) saw limited action last season but still rushed for 369 yards and four touchdowns. Between Lyda and Baker the Panthers will have a solid running game, but it’s the passing game that will wear out opposing defenses. Cameron Gully (5-10, 175, Sr.) and Kytavious Dixon (5-9, 175, Sr.) have the speed for game breaking plays and the hands to make the tough catches look easy. This offense has the potential to keep a defense on its heels and keep the chains moving. Coach Laverty is ready to get the Panthers back on track through hard work, believing in one another and a passion for the game. “We’re looking to help turn around a once prideful program with an excellent group of hard working young men that is eager to get the Panthers on the right track,” said coach

Andre Harris Jr. Laverty.

DEFENSE

A senior led defense will set up in the 3-4 as new defensive coordinator Jason Esau look to implement a system and field a team that puts a lot of pressure on opposing offenses. Led by linebacker Legend Fears (5-11, 225, Sr.) the Panthers want to kick start this season by sending a message to all of their opponents that this defense will not be pushed around. Fears will be a big part of that. Last season he recorded 19 tackles and a sack in limited action. Look for Fears to have a breakout season with fellow linebacker Aaron Veasy (5-10, 180, Sr.). The “collision crew” has a third member in outside linebacker Cole Murphy (5-10, 170, Sr.) giving coach Esau three solid players with speed ready to deliver the hit. Defensive end De’Sean Randall (6-5, 240, Sr.) is a force on the edge. Randall has the length to alter a running backs path and the strength to fight off the block and stop anything trying to get outside. Devin Fortin (5-10, 170, Sr.) will start at safety giving the Panthers an experienced player with 32 tackles and an interception to his credit. Corner Taoheed Kareem (6-1, 175, Sr.) has tremendous size at corner and the speed to cover an opponents top receiver. Expect to see something great from the Panthers this season under new leadership and players that want to leave a legacy for other classes to follow once they are gone.

Go Panthers! Phillip Goode

PUTNAM CITY WEST PATRIOTS Coach: ROCKY MARTIN Enrollment: 1,539

Eight. The number of state titles Putnam City West High School has won in their history. One. The number of state titles the football team has won. 1981. The year the Patriots went 14-0.

Quick Hits: The Patriots finished with a mark of 4-6 in 2015. It’s the first time PC West has won four games in a single season since finishing 6-4 in 2000. The dynamic duo of quarterback Trey Gooch and wide receiver Nick Robinson hooked up on scores of 94 and 46 yards to give the Patriots a 35-26 win over Stillwater. That pair should give defenses fits in 2016. Putnam West ended a 32-game losing streak in district play, beating Choctaw 32-21 on October 2nd.

Nick Robinson-Trey Gooch-Chris Potts

That team featured running back Mike Cutter who was named Offensive Player of the Year. The 1981 team had talent, but most of all they were a team. Fast forward to 2016 and this talented group head coach Rocky Martin has returning to the field. Blue chip player Nick Robinson (6-3, 205, Sr.) has offers from a ton of schools thanks to a big junior year that witnessed him catch 40 balls for 713 yards and 12 touchdowns. Robinson is one of the more athletic WR/TE’s in Class 6A. Throwing the darts to Robinson is quarterback Trey Gooch (6-5, 220, Sr.). Gooch threw for 2,193 yards on 156 completions as a junior with 27 touchdowns. He also rushed for 476 yards on 105 carries scoring three times. Chris Potts (6-2, 195, Sr.) is another dynamic receiver in the passing game for Gooch. Potts racked up 618 yards on 45 receptions with seven touchdowns. Potts is the perfect guy to compliment Robinson in the spread. Harrison Thornton (6-2, 185, Sr.) adds yet another weapon to an already loaded air assault. Thornton grabbed 27 receptions for 309 yards and four touchdowns last season. Running back Jordan Ealy (6-1, 210, Sr.) is a 1,000-yard back coach Martin has when it’s time to pound the ball. A big part of that running game is offensive tackle Dawson McLain (6-4, 265, So.). McLain will make holes turn up the juice on defensive linemen. “Coming off one of the most successful seasons

OFFENSE Entering his 10th season at Douglass High School, Willis Alexander is 81-29 as the head coach of the Trojans. His success has made Douglass into a formidable team over the last decade. Last season the Trojans made it to the second round of the playoffs where the Jones Longhorns got the best of them. This season there is a renewed focus on the fundamentals and turning that experience into more wins on the field. Coach Alexander returns six starters to the offensive side of the ball including the electric Treijon Edwards (5-9, 155, Sr.). Edwards is a dynamic player that can help this team in multiple ways. Look for the coaching staff to move him around and put him in positions to be successful. Running back Chris Friday (5-8, 180, Sr.) has amassed 3,785 yards rushing in his career averaging 8.9 per carry. Those numbers got Friday recognized as a VYPE Top 100 player this year. Chris Patterson (6-1, 200, Sr.) is a two-year starter and a bruiser at running back. The offensive line may have a depth issue, but Arain Smith (6-0, 300, Sr.) and Tyri Martinez (5-10, 260, Sr.) will answer a lot of those questions about the line once the season gets started. Smith is the anchor up front, while Martinez is a two-year starter.

DOUGLASS TROJANS

in recent years I feel like we are making strides in the right direction. The guys have bought in to what we’re trying to accomplish this year and we are excited about the upcoming season,” said coach Martin. DEFENSE

The 3-4 scheme the Patriots plan on running will feature nine returning starters that includes Deontae Clark (5-10, 195, Sr.), an impact player with a laser focus on finding and collecting a toll on any would-be running back attempting to enter his domain. Clark had 107 tackles last season and is joined in the pain zone by outside linebacker Katrell King (5-11, 205, Sr.). King accounted for 75 tackles and one interception. Senior nose guard A.J. Barnett (6-2, 275) is not someone to take lightly. The big man will punish the inside run game and pressure the QB by turning up the heat on the center. The secondary is just as solid with corners Tyon Davis (5-10, 150, Sr.) and T’Mahjai Scal es (5-8, 145, Sr.). The speed these two have will give the safeties the freedom to roam over the top and play the ball. Kevin Doffney (5-8, 160, Sr.) had 48 tackles at safety last year and is known for his big hits. “On defense we will be an aggressive but sound defense. We must play physical on both sides of the ball on every snap,” said Martin.

“Offensively we have a chance to be explosive. Players have gained valuable playing experience,” said coach Alexander.

DEFENSE Three-year starter Darius Hawkins (5-10, 175, Sr.) joins Friday as a VYPE Top 100 selectee. Hawkins will start at corner with Terrance Bagby (5-10, 165, Sr.) playing the other side of the field. Bagby is another three-year starter in the secondary. One of the leaders on defense is end Ikie Scott (6-2, 260, Sr.). The big man is tough to block off the edge and if he decides to crash inside, very few tackles have the strength or the footwork to stop him. Linebacker Perry Johnson (6-2, 155, Jr.) may ne the most underrated linebacker in 3A. Johnson is quick to the edge and not afraid to stick his head in the middle of the offensive line to stop the run. Linebackers coach Mark Lyon must find players to compliment Johnson and relieve the pressure, as opposing teams will look to chip to the second level to slow Johnson down. Larry Joubert will coach the defensive line and Robert Hubbard will handle the secondary. “Defensively we have many players that have valuable experience. Our success will rely on our development of our depth, and the off field growth transferring to the field,” said coach Alexander.

BETHANY BRONCHOS

Coach: REAGAN ROOF Enrollment: 501

Schedule: Aug. 25 – vs. Newcastle Sept. 2 – vs. Marlow Sept. 9 – at Pauls Valley Sept. 16 – at Kingfisher Sept. 23 – vs. Ada Sept. 30 at Harrah Oct. 7 – vs. Central Oct. 13 – at Blanchard Oct. 20 – vs. Tecumseh Oct. 28 – at Tuttle Nov. 4 – vs. Cleveland

Quick Hits: The Bronchos have a supreme pass defender in Hassan Lawton. Bethany held off eventual Class 3A semi finalist Lone Grove in the season opener thanks to a pair of interceptions by Lawton.

Head coach Reagan Roof served as an assistant under former Bethany head coach Rob Renshaw beginning in 2002. Roof’s Bethany squad will challenge Renshaw’s Marlow Outlaws for the third straight year. Roof won the last two meetings but Renshaw coached Bethany to its only state title in 2003.

OFFENSE The Bronchos have a few question marks entering the 2016 season. Notably at the quarterback position. Bryton Schmitt was the signal caller last year, but graduation has taken Schmitt and his 1,400 yards of production. The battle to become the starter started in the spring, but may not end until August. Wide receiver Hassan Lawton (6-1, 175, Sr.) certainly has a vested interest in who takes over the QB spot. Lawton had 20 receptions for 369 yards and two touchdowns last season. Running back Payton Harrell (6-1, 175, Jr.) looks to help the Bronchos by shouldering the load in the running game. Harrell had 90 carries for 598 yards and seven touchdowns. Solid production that will likely increase this season for Harrell. One area the new quarterback will be comfortable with is the offensive line. Tackle Seth Carmack (6-2, 260, Sr.) and guard Michael Sinkankas (6-1, 250, Sr.) must keep the pressure off the quarterback and make holes for Harrell. “This is a big season for us. We are making

DEFENSE Six starters are back for the Bronchos defense including Karber Miller (6-2, 200, Sr.) who recorded 43 tackles, three sacks and one interception last season from his linebacker position. Carmack will start at tackle where he accounted for 40 tackles and three sacks last year. The secondary will feature Lawton at corner with Gibson Diffee (5-11, 165, Sr.) playing the other side of the field. Lawton had two interceptions last year, while Diffee had two of his own with 12 tackles. Curran Cochran (6-0, 170, Sr.) joins Miller at linebacker where his production is crucial for the overall success of the Bronchos defense. Cochran recorded 31 tackles last season and in the 4-2-5 scheme he could see those numbers rise. Last year the defense only gave up 17.5 points per game, but that was in 3A. They were also 4-1 at home. Only time will tell how the move to the new class will affect the team, but look for the players to respond with confidence as the Bronchos enter a new era of Bethany football.

Go Bethany Bronchos!

Bethany has suffered through only one losing season since 2001. Prior to the arrival of the late, great Mike Little in 1998, the Bronchos had missed the playoffs 19 consecutive years. Last 5 Years: 2015 - 7-3, 2014 8-2-1 , 2013 - 7-4, 2012 - 4-6, 2011- 9-3

We’re your Shield. We’re your Shelter. OFFENSE The glass is always half full at Millwood and head coach Darwin Franklin is returning a solid group of starters on both sides of the ball. Quarterback Montrell Wilson (6-2, 155, Jr.) threw for 1,912 yards and 20 touchdowns last season completing 49% of his passes. Wilson makes throwing in the pocket or on the run look easy and his receivers do a good job of finding the space to work in giving Wilson an open target. Cameron Wesson (5-4, 140, Sr.) can play multiple positions including running back and wide receiver. Elijah Johnson (6-1, 180, Jr.) was a beast on the ground for the Falcons in 2015 rushing for 815 yards and 11 touchdowns. Tommyon Scott (6-0, 180, Jr.) is a bruising runner that refuses to go down on initial contact. Wide receiver DeMariyon Houston (6-0, 163, So.) caught nine balls for 121 yards and four scores last year. D’Quan Pierson (6-5, 170, Sr.) is a big target Wilson will use in the red zone and to move the chains. A young, but talented offensive line must step up this season and give the offense quality starts. Robert Snowball (6-1, 270, So.) and Christian Coleman (5-11, 265, So.) need to be the leaders up front for coach Franklin.

DEFENSE Coach Franklin wants his defense to play fast and physical. “We want to be physical and play with a relentless attitude and impose our will. The motto this season is “No explanations – No excuses,” said coach Franklin. Commanding the defense is sophomore Chase Coleman (6-0, 175) and Kittakone Sirisombath (5-6, 154, Jr.). Coleman had 47 tackles, one sack and one fumble recovery last season from his linebacker position, while Sirisombath had 43 tackles and one interception as a corner. Dewayntae Johnson (5-10, 180, Sr.) brings a burst of energy to the field and is an explosive hitter. Johnson finished the season with 42 tackles. Daxx McAlister (5-11, 165, Jr.) joins Coleman at linebacker. McAlister forced one fumble and grabbed 35 tackles last year. The defensive line will feature some familiar faces in Christian Coleman, Robert Snowball and Isreal Antwine (6-5, 273, Jr.). The versatile Jeffery Hall (6-0, 160, Sr.) could see time in the secondary or at linebacker, while other notable players looking to have an impact include William Shells (5-10, 210, Jr.) at linebacker and Caleb Collins (6-0, 170, Sr.) at corner or safety.

Go Falcons!

OC prepping for cross country success in fall campaign top-30 finisher at the Texas 5A meet last year – and a Kenya native, Hillary Kiptoo. Two previous Kenyans in OC’s program, Silas Kisorio and Geoffrey Njonjo, played key roles as OC won the NAIA national title in 2011 and the NCCAA national title in 2012. OC’s women’s cross country team placed third in last year’s Heartland meet, the highest conference finish since the Lady Eagles began competing in Division II in 2012, and all but one of the team’s seven top runners is back this year.

Kyle Broaddrick OKLAHOMA CITY – Cross country, a sport in which Oklahoma Christian enjoyed much success during its debut season in NCAA Division II, again figures to be a strong point for the university’s squads as the 2016-17 athletic season begins at OC.

Having lost five seniors off a men’s team that absolutely obliterated the field in last year’s Heartland Conference Championship in Laredo, Texas – posting an amazing team score of 20 and placing nine runners among the top 17 finishers – one might think OC would be rebuilding. Instead, coach Wade Miller’s squad figures to contend for what would be its third Heartland title in four years.

The Eagles – who cracked the top 10 in the powerful South Central Region rankings near season’s end last year – will be led by senior Kyle Broaddrick (a Broken Arrow High school product) and junior Sisay Gillock, a two-time All-Heartland honoree. Senior Evan Durrill and junior Emory Lobley also earned All-Heartland honors in 2015, giving OC a solid base from which to build another strong squad. Miller also added what he believes is a strong group of freshmen, including Derek Espinoza of Waxahachie, Texas – a 46

The Lady Eagles are led by the senior quartet of Layne Hammer, Maci Rich, Katie Jones and Sarah Cobb, four women who came into a rebuilding program together in 2013 and have enjoyed more and more success as their careers have progressed.

Hammer, from Greeley, Colo., earned All-Region honors last season by placing 14th in the Division II South Central Region Championship in Canyon, Texas, missing an individual spot in the Division II national meet by just four-tenths of a second. With two individual wins already to her credit, she might be the Heartland’s top runner this season.

Rich, from Marlow, is coming off a successful track and field season in which she set school records in the 5,000 me-

Layne Hammer ters and 1,500 meters, earning All-Great American Conference honors in the latter event after making the All-Heartland cross country squad. Her younger sister, Rylee Rich, will join her on the OC squad after a honor-filled career at Marlow High School. OC’s other newcomers both are also in-state products – Kelsey Castillo of Edmond North and Sydni Lehr of Eagle Point Christian in Sapulpa.
