Luis Perez Oklahoma Centenniel Oklahoma Centennial Senior Football player, Luis Perez, is this month’s FCA Athlete. Perez has now been an active member of FCA for a year, thanks to his pastor influencing and telling him to go. FCA has shown Perez how to live out his faith not just for him but helping his teammates with their faith as well. He attended FCA Camp this summer and helped to lead chapel time for the football team.
“I want to do everything for God and his glory. I want God’s greatness to be shown through me by my actions and the way I handle myself on and off the field,” Perez said.
Perez’ favorite bible verse is Jude 1:20-21 which says, “But you, dear friends, must build each other up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit. Keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.” Perez likes to compare this to practice, and how you have to be diligent in your faith, just as you do in practice.

Chargers Take Home Gold Heritage Hall cruises past Cushing in 3A title game.

When the curtain finally closed on the 2014 season the Chargers sat atop the 3A landscape after a dominating 37-14 win over Cushing in the championship game. In the finals it was a steady dose of the run game and a suffocating defense

GIRLS Leslie Warner (6th year) 13-14 Record: 20-6 Outlook: The Lady Chargers will look to stand tall among the teams chasing the Class 3A crown. Size will be a definite advantage for coach Leslie Warner’s squad with a roster including six players standing 5-11 or taller. Leading the way will be 5-11 playmaker Morgan Meacham (12.5ppg/2.8reb/3.1steals) that has proven to be a consistent shooter from the perimeter as well as using a quick first step to get to the rim for points. Anchoring the play in the paint will be 6-0 senior forward Madison Moore (6.2ppg/3.9reb) standing tall along with 6-1 sophomore forward Abbie Winchester (6.5ppg/5.3reb). 8

that powered the Chargers to the win. Heritage Hall quarterback Connor McGinnis carried the ball 18 times for a whopping 167 yards and two touchdowns on the night. Heritage Hall running back Terrell Love was equally as impressive on the night rushing for 64 yards and two touchdowns on 16 total carries. Defensively the Chargers forced five turnovers, three interceptions and two fumbles, and that proved to be the key to stopping Cushing’s magical run through the playoffs. Those numbers are pretty much on par with what the Chargers have done all season long. Love rushed for 1,282 yards and 27 touchdowns on 211 carries in the 14 games leading up to the championship while McGinnis toted the rock 146 times for 1,198 yards and 15 touchdowns. The three interceptions in the title game gave the Chargers 30 of those this season led by McGinnis who had 10. Other leaders for the Chargers defense
Baillie Miller, 5-7 senior guard, will move into the spotlight in playmaking duties as the Lady Chargers establish a past faced offense and smothering defensive group. Newcomer Kennedy Gillette, 5-11 sophomore and 6-0 senior Jamie Phelps will provide valuable production on both ends of the court. “Size and talent will be a plus for us,” admits Warner, who enters her sixth year as head coach. “How well we can develop our

BOYS Chris Hamilton (4th year) 13-14 Record: 22-6 Outlook: The Chargers punched their ticket to the Class 3A state tournament last season and have plans of not just returning to the Big House but playing on Saturday with dreams of carrying off the gold ball as champions. Three starters are back from the final eight team paced by the play of Chris Hamilton II, a 6-1 point guard that has led the Chargers in scoring each of the past two seasons including 14.5 points and 5.2 rebounds a year ago. Size and skill will be present on the chargers roster. Last season Bruner averaged 7.1 points per game with Glover adding an average of 5.7 points per game. “We are excited about another opportunity to compete at a high level. We have had a very successful summer and are looking forward to continuing to improve,” Cowherd said. “This is as talented and hard working of a group as we have had in many years. This group can impact games much like our title teams of 2011 and 2013.”

Outlook: With two returning starters off a 15-10 squad a year ago head coach Dandy Peeler is expecting big things this season. “Great energy from this group. We had a fantastic summer. These girls are extremely competitive and I am looking forward to a great year,” Peeler said. Coming back this season to lead the Lady Bulldogs is the dynamic duo of Andee Decker (5-9) and Paige Serup (5-6). Decker, a small forward type of player, averaged 12 points and six rebounds per game last year while Serup averaged eight points, five assists and three rebounds per game as the team’s point guard. Guards Catherine Gould (5-7) and Elyse Wyatt (6-0) are both excellent shooters and shot 38 and 42 percent from the field respectively last year. Forward Avery Ogle (5-11) will round out the projected starting five for the Lady Bulldogs. A player who does a bit of everything, Ogle averaged six points and six rebounds per game last year. Off the bench expect Jasmyne Laskey (5-7) and Maddie Huelskamp (5-7) to both see big minutes.

The first of those Top 100 players is forward Kristian Doolittle (6-6, Jr.) who is a matchup nightmare for any opponent. Last year Doolittle averaged 15.6 points and 8.7 rebounds per game and what is 10

Outlook: Pete Papahronis comes over from Guthrie to lead the Lady Huskies this year and has already been forced to overcome a big obstacle with Emma Ledbetter, a potential starter, tearing her ACL leaving her sidelined for the season. Despite that obstacle Papahronis said the goal remains clear.
“It’s always difficult in the beginning when a new coach takes over. The players must learn a new system and new philosophies. We will work hard and improve. We will be better in February than we are in December. Our goal is to compete and give ourselves a chance to win every game,” Papahronis said. On the interior Papahronis expects forwards Sloan Hendley (Sr.) and Elise Dilkes (Jr.) to play big roles along with center Hayli Hoffman (Jr.). Outside on the perimeter, guards Kendall Burdge (Jr.), Addy Guthrie (So.), Abby Olsen (So.) and Brooklyn Bowman (Sr.) all will figure into the rotation somehow. Meanwhile other players who should contribute off the bench are junior center Lauren Lanier and sophomore guard Taylor Scoggin. Outlook: Last season the Huskies finished just below .500 but return 73 percent of their scoring and 81 percent of their rebounding from last year, stats that lead head coach Steven Goss to have some very high expectations for this team. “We will be a team that will compete at a high level every game. We will continue to improve and look forward to the season with championship expectations,” Goss said. The Huskies will feature a very formidable inside-out attack this year with forward Harrison Stoddart (6-7, So.) working in the paint and guard Tyson Anderson (6-1, Jr.) working outside on the perimeter. Last season Stoddart averaged 12.5 points, 6.4 rebounds and 5.1 blocks per game while Anderson averaged 10.9 points, 2.1 assists and 2.0 steals per game. Also back this year will be guards Marques Wilson (6-4, So.) and TJ Deloney (6-1, Sr.) and forward Brock Butler (6-5, Jr.). Last year Wilson averaged 8.8 points and 4.9 assists per game. Outlook: After winning the state title in 2011 and 2012 the Lady Wolves have been bridesmaids the past two years; finishing as state semifinalists in 2013 and state runner-ups last year. Overall the Lady Wolves will have been to the state tournament in nine of the past 10 seasons and are looking for another trip to state this year. “We go about nine or 10 deep and may be the quickest team I have
had. Also we can go quick or go with power. I like our chances of going back to state,” head coach Paul Bass said. Point guard Jo’Nah Johnson (5-7, So.) will be the engine that makes the Lady Wolves go this season after averaging 6.0 points, 2.2 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game as a freshman. Summer Jones (5-8, Jr.) and Rachel Shadid (5-3, Sr.) will also play feature roles on the perimeter this year. Last season Jones averaged 8.0 points per game while Shadid chipped in three points per game. On the interior it will be the Cooper show as twin sisters Alexis Cooper (6-0, Sr.) and Alaina Cooper (6-0, Sr.) each play big minutes. Outlook: After missing out on the state tournament last season the Wolves are hungry to get a shot at a gold ball this season. Head coach Lenny Hatchett couldn’t be happier with the group of players under his watch. “This is a great group of players that compete, defend and believe in each other. They are willing to make sacrifices to reach the state tournament,” Hatchett said. The number one player to watch this season for the Wolves will be forward DaQuan Jeffries (6-5, Sr.). Last season Jeffries, who is also a monster on the glass, averaged 10 points per game and will be expected to do even more this year. Daron Mims (6-2, Sr.) is another talented scorer in the frontcourt who averaged 11 points and three rebounds per game last season. Austin Zackery (6-3, Sr.) is also a player that should see big minutes at forward this season. At point guard the Wolves will feature Kristoff Hayden (6-1, So.). Also looking to crack the starting rotation will be junior

Outlook: The defending state champs have the talent and work ethic to defend their state title. Head coach Totsy Manning returns a solid group of players and is excited with what she has seen in practice. “The Deer Creek
basketball team has been diligently working to defend their title. The players understand and embrace the time, effort and relentless work ethic that develop championship teams. They are committed to our program and more importantly to each other to achieve our team goals for the 2014-15 season,” said coach Manning. Dakota Vann (5-10, Sr.) averaged 11 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.2 steals a game last year. Vann was tournament MVP last year and named to the VYPE Top 100 this preseason. Joining Vann at forward is Abbey Renner (5-10, Sr.) who shot 72% from the free throw line and averaged 6.0 points a contest. Guards Shae Scheffler (5-3, Sr.) and Elayna Wilson (5-7, Sr.) give the Lady Antlers speed at both ends of the floor and two players that can play a lock-down style of defense. Glenn Chesley (5-10, Sr.) rounds out an all-senior starting lineup. Chesley averaged 4.0 points and 3.0 rebounds last season. With a talented group of underclassmen, coach Manning is confident her team is putting the pieces together for another run.

Outlook: Head coach Joe Crawford is excited to see what this group can do after seeing their work ethic in early practices. “These girls have been a blessing to work with. They are the type to show up early and go home late without being asked. We expect to battle every game and get better as the season progresses,” said coach Crawford. One player the OCA faithful will get out of their seats to watch is Erin Drewke (5-7, Jr.). A threat to hit the three or drive the lane, Drewke brings energy to the floor and a never give up attitude. Madi Goodin (5-8, So.) and Demmy Teng (5-7, Sr.) are two guards that play solid defense and can provide offense when their numbers are called. Kailley Paparusi (5-9, So.) is another dynamic sophomore who plays the post. Camille Cave (5-5, Sr.) brings experience to the court for coach Crawford. Outlook: With three returning starters to the team this year, head coach Robert Gregg has opened up competition and is looking for the five best guys to put on the floor. “We have a good nucleus coming back from last year, so I’m very excited for this year. On paper we could have a great year, but as I’ve told the guys, being good on paper doesn’t win games. You have to go earn it on the court. But I’m very excited for this year,” said Gregg. One player that stands out is Caleb Kingsley (6-0, Jr.), a guard who scored 18.6 points and grabbed 5.0 rebounds per game last year. Nathaniel Garner (5-11, Sr.) at forward can provide the team with 10.6 points and 3.0 steals every night. Kingsley and Garner is a tough combo to stop. Asa Kingsley (6-3, So.) makes huge plays in the paint. From grabbing rebounds or
blocking shots, Asa Kingsley can get the job done. Throw Jordan Edwards and Ryley Gee into the mix and you do have, on paper, what looks like the makings of a solid team. Outlook: Despite playing a tough schedule this season, head coach Trent Toler expects his team to be ready for the grueling task of playing good teams every time they step on the floor. Jeremiah Gibson (6-2, Jr.) will start at guard where he accounted for 15 points last season. Trey Hoehner (5-9, Sr.) is another excellent shooter and defensive minded player that averaged seven points per contest. Junior forward Austin Puckett (6-4) will answer the call in the paint, while Luke Frankfurt (5-9, Sr.) brings leadership to the floor. Wildcard Kade Van Meter (6-2, Sr.) is a match up problem for most opponents. Van Meter could have a big year on both ends of the court. Also look for Jackson Rothwell, Jordan Soliz, Austin Aduddell and Ford Kilborn to make major contributions this season. Outlook: With a good mix of talented young players and experience, the Jets could be a team to watch this season. Head coach Brian Booker expects his team to have many positives this season. “I think our speed and quickness could give teams trouble on the defensive end. If we do the right things and get a few of the bench players to make big contributions, I expect us to make a run at the state tournament,” said coach Booker. Gerard Giles (6-2, Sr.) averaged 14 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists per contest last year. Kiahree Kerns (5-7, Sr.) is a quick guard with an excellent shot. Kerns should be called “Instant Offense” or “IO.” Rudy Thompson (6-3, Sr.) is close to becoming a double-double player averaging 13 points and 8.0 rebounds a game. Kevin Rassett (5-7, Jr.) and Kun Lin (6-0, Sr.) bring quickness and a smothering style of defense to the court. Shala Robinson (5-11, So.) will be starting at forward and Mikayla Arnold (5-9, So.) will see her first varsity action this season after fighting an early injury last year. Moore will have a deep bench including Fortuneit Traylor, a sophomore post player, Alysha Michaelson, a junior forward, Emily Jackson, a senior guard and Kate Martin, a freshman point guard. Oliver will be joined by Jaylon Wilson (6-2), Brevin Howell (6-0) and Christian Ohler (6-1). The post will be played by Diontre Cutliff, a 6-5 senior. The first man off the bench will be Quincy Dockins, who will help solidify the second team. a game not only offensively but at the defensive end with her size and ability to guard the opponent’s best player. At the other forward spot, Kyeria Hannah (6-1, Sr.) provides similar ability as Hawkins and can be a force in the post or outside from the 3-point arc. Alyssa Jones (5-9, Sr.) is a combo guard that can push the offense and find scorers in transition while also being a threat to score. Coach Kannady-Sayes would put all three players as Vype Top 100 worthy. Joining Jones in the backcourt is Jamia Sheppard (5-9, Jr.) and Kyra Johnston (5-8, Sr.) both of whom will give additional production to Jones’ 10.1 points per game average from a season ago. In the post, look for Alexis Young (6-0, So.) to give depth off the bench for the Sabercats. “This team is very athletic and talented, but my favorite thing that I have seen so far from this year’s team is their determination,” explained KannadySayes. “Our upperclassmen have always had the athleticisim and ability but I think they have the maturity and desire that it takes to accomplish the things they want to accomplish this season.”

to have an exciting season. The guard position will be important to the success of the Jaguars led by Ashley Gomez (5-9, Jr.) who averaged just shy of 14 points per game as a sophomore. Gomez is prepared for her junior season and looks to expand her play with increases in rebounding, assists and steals. Sydney Chastain (5-6, Jr.) and Jessi Murcer (5-4, Fr.) will share the point guard duties at times. Chastain averaged nearly four assists and two steals last season to go with 7.8 points per game.
The frontcourt will be led by junior forward Kaci Richardson (8.5 points, 7.3 rebounds) while Calli Palmer (6-0, Sr.) gives the Jaguars a great presence in the paint that can not only pull down rebounds, 5.3 per game as a junior, but also put her name in the points register averaging seven per game. A pair of freshman will be some of the first off the bench and give added depth in the frontcourt with Jayci Stonebraker and Whitney Outon. Outlook: With the loss of AllState selection Tripp Fuller the Jaguars must find that production elsewhere this season. “We feel like we have a very complete team this year. We have a lot of skilled players on both ends of the floor,” said head coach Scott Hodges as he enters his fifth season. “We are really excited about our team this year and the future of our program.” Hodges will look towards two bigger guards to lead the way for the Jags in Justin Cates (6-3, Sr.) and Dakota Foster (6-3, Jr.). Last season Foster averaged 7.8 points per game while Cates averaged 7.6 a contest. Both are a match up problem for opponents with their height and are able to use that to their advantage. Dayshon Matheson (5-11, Sr.) and Landon Smith (6-1, Sr.) round out the backcourt for Westmoore as the duo combined to average over 10 points and 4 assists per game last year. Seeing his first varsity

Outlook: Michael Neal takes over a Norman Lady Tigers program on the rise this year. Previously Neal had been working on the boys side at Norman but this summer came over to take the reigns as the girls head coach. Leading the way for the Lady Tigers will be forward and VYPE Top 100 selection Bethany Franks (So.) who is already drawing
attention from multiple DI schools. Last season as just a freshman Franks averaged 15.5 points and 10.4 rebounds per game and could improve those numbers this year. Fellow forward Dari Hunter (So.) will also be stepping into a big role this year after averaging 2.2 points and 4.3 rebounds per game as a freshman. Neal describes Hunter as a player who is raw offensively but will play a crucial role as the team’s defensive specialist. Guard Shelby Thrailkill (So.) will be the team’s leader on the perimeter bringing a lights out shooting ability and a high basketball IQ to the floor. Overall coach Neal said that he is looking for his team to do just a few simple things this year. “The things we have talked about everyday since I took over is their effort to compete and get better everyday along with their ability to listen, buy in and execute what we are telling them to do,” Neal said. “If we do those things I think we will be fine.” Bethany Franks F So. Cooper Clark Outlook: Last season the Tigers won just five games but did advance all the way to the area tournament. That deep run has energized the roster this year according to head coach Matt Thornton. “Our program got a huge boost with the way we played last year in

the playoffs. Our players are excited and this being my third year I think things are starting to move in the right direction,” Thornton said. VYPE Top 100 selection Cooper Clark (6-1, Sr.) will be the heart of the Tigers offense this season after averaging 17.2 points and 5.8 rebounds per game last year. An attacking guard Clark can get to the rim from any spot on the floor and is a deadly free-throw shooter when he draws contact. Clark is however the team’s lone returning starter leaving Norman looking for several players to step into bigger roles. Forwards Hudson McClure (6-2, Sr.) and Quinton Henson (6-1, Sr.) will be two such players this year. On the perimeter Jordan Nicks (5-10, Jr.) and Tyson Cooper (5-10, Jr.) will both see big minutes this season. Outlook: After a quarterfinal loss to eventual champions Broken Arrow, the Timberwolves return a pair of starters from last season the coaching staff will look to young and less experienced players to step into impactful roles this season. Alexa Scott (6-0, Jr.) returns after earning all-conference honors last season after averaging a doubledouble with 10 points and 10 rebounds per game. She will be the catalyst on both ends of the court
for Norman North this year. Senior Tia Williams averaged 10 points per game last year and can stretch the court with her sharp shooting. Sam Landreth (5-9, Sr.) will provide meaningful minutes at forward while fellow senior Aspen Knight will see a bigger role at guard. Crymson Rose (5-5, So.) is part of a strong sophomore class that must step up and provide needed depth. Outlook: Entering his second season at the helm of the Norman North boys program, coach Bryan Merritt has his team looking to make the next step in the development of the program. Helping that goal of taking the next step is a roster loaded with three
Paige Canty college prospects. Marcus Dickinson Jr. (6-1, Jr.) has earned first team all-conference honors the last two years and averaged 15.8 points per game last season from his guard spot. Dickinson has earned the attention of numerous collegiate coaches as has fellow junior guard Lindy Waters III who averaged 13.8 points per game last season while using his six-foot-five frame to pull down 9.2 rebounds on his way to all-conference honors. Also returning to the backcourt is Conference Newcomer Trae Young (6-1, So.) who averaged 10.4 points and 1.8 rebounds as a freshman. Quan Hogan (6-0, Jr.) will play significant minutes as will T.J. Brown (6-2, Jr.) at guard while Winston Nelson (6-5, So.) will see quality time at forward. Marcus Dickinson Outlook: “The Big Ticket” is normally what NBA fans call Kevin Garnett. It’s also what Putnam City Lady Pirates fans should call forward Carrington Small (6-1, Jr.). Last season as a sophomore Small averaged 10 points and eight rebounds per game all while shooting over 53 percent from the floor. With Small leading the team, forward Nashyla Hammons (5-11, Jr.) will draw many favorable matchups and should be able to improve on an impressive sophomore season that saw her average seven points and nine rebounds a game. Ashley Johnson (5-8, Sr.) could also spend some time in the frontcourt although she also has the ability to step outside as a guard depending on her matchup. Point guard Jazmine Jefflo (5-5, Sr.) will run the show on the perimeter this year after averaging five points and four assists per game a year ago. Kelzie Orr (5-7, Fr.) is also expected to make a big splash in the backcourt this year. “We are looking forward to the upcoming season because our girls are working hard everyday and improving on the little things. We have three returning starters who are fun to watch and know how to make things happen,” head coach Courtney Pennington said. Outlook: Last season the Pirates went through a rebuilding year and finished with just five total wins.
This season Putnam City brings back five starters, including three prolific scorers. Grason Wright (6-1, Jr.) is one of those players with a special talent for putting the ball through the hoop and will be a leader on the floor this year for the Pirates. Last year from his spot at guard Wright averaged 17.3 points per game and pulled down an average of 4.3 rebounds per game. The veteran basketball mentor, Perry enters this year with two starters returning from last season’s 18-10 squad. Topping the charts will be two year starter Nakylia Carter, a 5-6 guard, that according to Perry can change the game through her intensity on both ends of the floor. Joining the talent pool for the Lady Panthers is a trio of juniors including 5-7 guard Malachi Williams, 5-5 guard Alexis Mbroh along with the long and tall reach of 6-2 forward London Archer. BOYS Ryan Wagner (1st year) 13-14 Record: 10-12 Outlook: The combination of talent for the Panthers will more than offset a youthful lineup for first year head coach Ryan Wagner. PC North welcomes the return of starting point guard Michah Speight, a 5-9 junior who last season averaged 16.3 points per game while delivering 4.5 assists per contest. A quartet of seniors will be among the lineup including the guard trio of 5-9 Jace Watson, 6-0 Drake Perry and 6-0 Channing Miller while 6-4 forward Michael Rowland and 6-3 junior Mitchell Hill will give the Panthers much needed size along the blocks. Headlining this year’s roster are a pair of VYPE Top 100 selections including 6-4 senior forward Tyson Jolly, who despite missing the second half of the season due to health reasons, dominated the inside averaging 17.1 points and 8.3 rebounds along with 6-1 point guard Tre Evans, a transfer from Edmond Santa Fe 22

where he averaged 11.4 points per game while dishing out 4.5 assists per game. Evans, a junior, has already verbally committed to play college ball at Oklahoma State University. Head coach Lenny Bert enters his fourth season on the bench all smiles when checking his roster that includes 5-8 junior guard Marquis Johnson, who totaled 13.1 points per outing in last season’s fast paced sprint to the 6A finals, returning to join 6-2 senior Kemarrie Carter (8.1ppg/6.3reb) and 6-3 sophomore swingman Nick Robinson (4.0ppg/3.2reb). Adding more energy and muscle to the talented lineup will be 5-10 senior guard Steven Stallings and 6-6 senior forward Dedrian Parmer. “We have strength in numbers,” admits Bert, “by far the most experienced team in my tenure at West. We’ll have nine guys that will play and contribute every game.”
Outlook: The Lady Irish move up to Class 6A this year which is never an easy proposition but what will help with that move is the return of all five starters from last season. With such a strong core of players back in the fold head coach Shawn Clark feels like his team can handle the move. “If we can stay healthy we will be competitive throughout the season,” Clark said. Strong guard play led by point guard Torie Shanhour (5-6, Jr.) and shooting guard Gabby Grubb (5-8, Sr.) will be a major strength for the Lady Irish this year. Last year Shanhour averaged 10.3 points per game while Grubb averaged a solid 11.2 points a game giving the Irish two legitimate scoring options on the perimeter. The Irish will also be able to count on a very experienced frontcourt this year with forwards Maddie Andrews (5-10, Sr.) and Ashli Brown (5-11, Sr.) teaming with center Hattie Msuya (6-0, Sr.). Last season Andrews missed most of the year but Brown averaged 5.2 points and 4.0 rebounds a game and Msuya chipped in 4.5 points and 7.1 rebounds per contest. Outlook: After finishing as the Class 5A runner-up last season the Irish will be moving up to Class 6A this year. That transition is never an easy one but having one of the top post players in the state always helps. That player is VYPE Top 100 selection and Naval Academy commit Will Lienhard (6-8 F Sr.). Last season Lienhard averaged 10 points and nine rebounds per game and will be expected to do that and more this year. Also working inside for the Irish will be forward Stuart Krows (6-3, Sr.) who averaged seven points and three rebounds per game last year. On the perimeter Zach Cornelison (6-5, Sr.) and Cole Terlip (5-9 Sr.) give the Irish a good deal of experience in the backcourt. Mason Webb (6-4, So.) will team with the two seniors to give McGuinness some serious length on the perimeter. Last season Cornelison averaged five points a game while Webb and Terlip both averaged four points per contest. Outlook :Douglass, coming off a season that was cut short in regional play, will return three starters this season. Breiana Samilton returns as Douglass’ leading scorer at 14 points a game. The 5-foot-9 guard-forward combination also had seven rebounds, seven steals and three assists per game as a junior. “Breiana is a natural born leader,” Douglass coach Anthony L. Gardner said. “Her presence on the court makes her teammates be more aggressive and
competitive.” Two seniors, Miyana Dejear and Ladanae Thompson, return alongside Samilton. Dejear had 12 points and 10 rebounds a game last year, and Thompson chipped in with four points and two rebounds. Jasmine Richey and Monquie Long are two juniors will should round out Douglass’ top five. Sanders can play every position on the floor for head coach Kendal Cudjoe. Sanders can shoot the three and play in the paint. Patrick McKaufman (6-6, Jr.) nearly averaged a double-double last year scoring 10 points and 8.0 rebounds. Guard James Grimes (6-0, Sr.) steps onto the floor and brings his eight points and three rebounds of production to the team. “With three returning starters and several players coming off the bench, this year’s team will have more experience than last,” said coach Cudjoe. The Falcons will look for a deeper run in the playoffs this season led by the staunch defense of small forward Raven Prince (6-1, Sr.). As a junior, Prince averaged 13 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. If there is a weakness in her game it is at the charity stripe where she must improve this season. “Discipline is the key to success,” said coach A. Shannon Hayes and for the Falcons to have success the discipline of post player Derae Lewis (6-2, Sr.) will play a part. Lewis gives Millwood a duo that measures over six feet tall which will give opponents match-up issues. Add that Lewis also averaged 11 points, seven rebounds and four blocks last season the match-up looks even more treacherous. At guard the Falcons will call upon MeKayla Jackson (5-10, Sr.), Brea Dean (5-7, Sr.) and Nykiah Hines (5-7, Jr.). Dean averaged 13 points and a pair of steals per game last season. Jackson is a well rounded player that can battle for boards, find the open player while also finding the bottom of the net. Hines is a strong defender that can create turnovers and turning them into points at the other end. Coach Hayes will look to Deztinee Goode to be the first off the bench throughout the season. With four of the final six games of the season on the road for Millwood the Falcons will need to show discipline in the final stretch of their schedule. Coach Varryl Franklin will look towards his five seniors to provide a strong start to each game allowing Daquan Pierson to add energy from the bench. Outlook: After improving his team’s record for the third straight year, head coach Ryan Maloney is preparing his team to make a run for the 6A championship. The Yellowjackets finished the 2013-14 season with an impressive 22-6 record. Maloney’s team came up just short of the 6A title, losing to eventual champion Broken Arrow in the state tournament semifinals. The Yellowjackets are only returning two starters; one of them is sophomore guard and VYPE Top 100 player Ana Llanusa, who led the team with 19.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game last season. The Yellowjackets have a balanced frontcourt to compliment Llanusa’s explosive game. Senior forward Maci Hanson and junior center Zariah White both averaged 5.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game last season. Maloney is excited for the opportunity to make a run for the title again this season. “We took a big step forward this year,” said Ryan Maloney, who enters his fourth season as

Beale’s team enters the season boasting an extremely balanced starting five. The frontcourt consists of a pair of 6-foot-4 juniors in Braden Hicks and Lonell Burris. Demarea Reno (5-7) leads a backcourt that is composed of three seniors, including Kobe Kiesel (6-2) and Rylan Russell (5-11). Outlook: Kevin Korstjens begins his second season at the helm for the Lady Broncos with an optimistic outlook. “I’m very excited for the season. Our girls have put in and continue to put in a lot of hard work. I can’t wait for it to pay off for them,” Korstjens said. The Lady Broncos’ leading returning scorer is guard Addy Lawson (5-8, Jr.) who averaged 8.2 points and 1.9 rebounds per game last year. Point guard Madison Maxwell (5-4, Sr.) averaged 7.5 points and 3.8 rebounds per game last year and also has the ability to fill up the stat sheet. Shelby Wright (5-10, Jr.) and Logan Haller (5-10, So.) are both versatile athletes who can play both inside and out and should both see significant playing time this year. Outlook: Last season in his second year at Mustang head coach Terry Long took the Broncos to the Class 6A state tournament. This year the Broncos bring back four starters and add several key players who did not play last year. On the perimeter Jakolby Long (6-4, Jr.) leads the way after averaging 11 points, six rebounds, two steals and two assists a game last year. Fellow guard Terrell Williams (6-0, Sr.) is the team’s top returning scorer and averaged 13 points and four assists last season.
Add in Isaiah Hammons (6-3, Sr.) who averaged seven points and four rebounds a game plus Curtis Haywood (6-5, Jr.) and Aubrey Johnson (6-2, Sr.) who both either didn’t play at all or missed major time due to injury and you get an idea of just how talented the Broncos backcourt is. Mustang also has a lot of talent on the interior as well with Austin Meyer (6-9, Jr.) anchoring things at center. Last year Meyer averaged 11 points and nine rebounds a game and could easily improve on those numbers this year. Geoffrey Hightower (6-5 Sr.) will also see big minutes at the post this year after averaging nine points and seven rebounds last year. Head coach Eric Sailer is confident he can get the girls to the level they need to be to compete in Class 6A. “This will be an interesting year. We have several players that have not played quality varsity basketball minutes. We may take some lumps early on in the year, but hopefully we can learn and adjust as we go,” said Sailer. Two players return from last year’s 16-8 team. Post player Maci Exum (6-0, Jr.) averaged 9.8 points and five boards last year. For the season she recorded 34 blocks as well. Katy Fuston (5-8, Jr.) will start at guard where she scored 4.0 points and 3.0 rebounds last season. Another junior to watch is Megan Sailer. Sailer and Fuston could become a solid combo on the offensive end of the floor. Coach Sailer has three freshmen all looking to make contributions to the team this season. Seth Eidson (6-2, Sr.) can handle the ball and shoot. His finishing ability at the rim makes him a threat on every possession. Drake Landerous (6-5, Jr.) is a long, lanky guard that’s tough to defend. He will be a matchup problem for most of our opponents. Tucker Doyle (6-5, Sr.) averaged 8.0 points and 6.0 rebounds last season, while Cameron Martin (6-8, So.) put down 16 points and 8.0 rebounds. With good hands and a good shot, Martin will start at center and look to dominate the paint. Jordan Williams (6-1, So.) is a gritty, tough defender. Three starters return from that team allowing Midwest City to set their sights on a gold ball. Leading that group is impact player Chinna Fair (5-8 Jr.); who is an athletic guard who has the ability to take nearly any defender off the dribble and has an uncanny knack to seek out offensive rebounds. Last season Fair averaged 9.6 points and 4.4 rebounds a game along with averaging two steals per contest as well. Asia Davis (5-6, Jr.) will also be a key cog in the Midwest City attack after averaging 6.9 points and 2.4 rebounds a

Outlook: Last year the Bombers went 23-3 and advanced to the Class 6A semifinals before losing to eventual state champion Union by a score of 69-66. The bad news for Midwest City fans however is that the Bombers don’t return a single starter from last year and will feature a very inexperienced roster. Head coach Dewayne Bradley readily acknowledges that fact but is
choosing to look at it in more of a positive light. “This is the most inexperienced team I have gone into a season with. Lots of new faces in new roles. We improved in the month of June quicker than any team I have coached. A solid junior class and a large freshman class will make an impact for us,” Bradley said. At the guard spots this year Jourdin Anderson (6-1, Jr.) and Reece Jones (5-10, Jr.) will look to make their mark on the traditionrich program. Inside the Bombers will have a decent amount of size with Michael Turay (6-6 Sr.), Johntae Upchurch (6-4, Sr.) and Brendan Brown (6-4, Jr.) all getting significant time at forward. Freshman Jalen Redmond is also a big and explosive player and should also see big minutes either in the starting lineup or as the Bombers’ sixth man. Outlook: The Lady Titans are a perennial powerhouse, but with just one returning starter from a year ago and a roster that lacks size, improving on last year’s 22win season may be an uphill battle. “This will be the smallest team that I have ever had since coming to Carl Albert. We will also need some of our inexperienced players to contribute,” head coach Tim Price said. Guard Kaley Hallmark (5-7, Sr.) is the team’s lone returning starter and averaged 11 points per game last season. Carl Albert will also count heavily on guards Shamika Smith (5-5, Jr.) and Charissa Price (5-7, So.) this year. Coach Price is confident in both Smith and Price saying that both players have the ability to lead the Lady Titans in scoring. Lanie Batten-Goodman (5-7, Sr.)
and Cali Walker (5-8, So.) round out the Lady Titans projected starting lineup this year. Off the bench coach Price expects big things out of freshmen Ashlin Flowers and Jolie Fish along with senior Tarah Cain. Outlook: Over the past two seasons Carl Albert has accumulated a 4114 overall record but have failed to make it past the first round of the Class 5A state tournament either year. This season the Titans bring back two starters as they once again set their sights on a gold ball. Headlining the Titans’ roster this year is forward and VYPE Top 100 selection Hayden Howell (6-7, Sr.). Last season Howell averaged 15.4

points and 9.8 rebounds per game and is hungry to improve those numbers this year. Guard Wes Smith (6-7, Sr.) is also back this season after averaging 8.4 points and 4.8 rebounds per game a year ago. Guards Mason Harrell (5-7, Fr.), Steven Gordon (5-8, Jr.) and Darren Dobbins (5-7, Sr.) all figure to play big roles as well this season. Forward Trey Hopkins (6-3, Fr.) should also see big minutes this year in the Titans lineup. “We have some returning starters and bench players combined with some very talented younger players. Hopefully throughout the season those younger players can get acclimated to the varsity game while our returning players make us competitive,” head coach Jay Price said. Outlook: The Lady Eagles may be young, but they are talented and do not lack experience. Breail Goodlow (5-11, Jr.) started last year as a sophomore and averaged 7.3 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals per contest. “We’re very young, but very talented. We started two freshmen and a sophomore last season,” said coach Sears. Experienced youth is the best way to describe Del City. Ossyana Ozoani (5-11, So.) and Madison Welchel (5-10, So.) both started as freshmen giving the team that experience they will need this season. Ozoani averaged 5.7 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2.0 assists, while Welchel went for 4.6 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals. The combo creates matchup problems for most teams in Class 5A. “Goodlow suffered a dislocated

shoulder and was lost for two games last season. She had surgery this summer and will be 100% in December,” said Sears. Jakira Wilson (5-6, So.) is another quick point guard that plays solid defense. Wilson averaged 3.7 points, 2.0 assists and 1.0 rebound per game. Senior Diamonde Foxworth (5-9, F) will contribute on both ends of the floor this season. Outlook: Last years trip to the state quarterfinals did nothing but leave this team hungry for more of the state tournament cake. With one returning starter to the floor for head coach Tim Stogsdill, the challenge is to find the right combination that will get them back to the state tournament. “Last years state quarterfinals Class 5A team graduated eight seniors and now moving up to
Class 6A will be a huge test for a very inexperienced team in a tough new conference (Big Ten). There will be growing pains, but we will be battle tested,” said coach Stogsdill. Breiman Alexander (8.4 ppg/5.0 apg/3.0 rpg) brings senior leadership to the court for the Eagles. Alexander will have help in senior transfer Latrell Brown and last years JV star Neko Gordan (Jr.). Freshman Issac Beverley and sophomore Jordan Samilton are two exciting, but young players coach Stogsdill will need to mature and provide a spark on both ends of the floor. The rotation is something that could change as the season wears on. Depth will increase once football season comes to an end.

Eagles success in the first semester. the state’s most intriguing players in 7-foot sophomore John Moon, who’s from Crescent. As a freshman, he averaged 10.8 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.6 blocked shots per game. He’s already an experienced veteran on a young OC squad that includes 13 freshmen and sophomores, three seniors and no juniors.
It proved to be a successful fall for Oklahoma Christian athletics, with a pair of teams posting national runnerup finishes and two others finishing in the top 10 nationally. OC’s men’s golf team, led by AllAmerica performances by junior Sam Johnston and senior Trey Payne of Ardmore, finished second at the National Christian College Athletic Association Championship in Panama City Beach, Fla. Johnston now is a five-time All-American, having earned NCCAA honors three times and NCAA Division II honors twice so far. Johnston has won five career tournaments in two-and-a-half seasons.
At the NCCAA Cross Country Championship in Houghton, N.Y., OC’s men also finished second – the program’s fourth consecutive top-four national finish. Junior Bryant Keirns took second individually and two other Eagles – freshman Sisay Gillock and sophomore Evan Durrill – joined Keirns in earning All-America honors. The previous week, that trio had earned All-Heartland Conference

honors (and Gillock was named as the freshman of the year) while leading OC to a runner-up finish in the NCAA Division II conference’s championship race in Wichita, Kan. Keirns was second individually in the league meet for the second straight year. OC’s fall women’s teams also posted strong performances. The Lady Eagles were third at the NCCAA tournament in golf, with senior Anna Arrese Cortadellas earning All-America honors for a fourth straight year with a runner-up finish. Senior Catherine Odgers became a two-time AllAmerican while junior Audrey Meisch also made the NCCAA All-America squad.
The Lady Eagles, coming off a 19win season that included a second straight NCCAA Central Region title, have four seniors – Logan McKee of Cordell, Makenzie Brown of Savanna, Skyler Newberry of Marlow and Kaitlyn Morris of Kiowa, Kan. Another Oklahoma prep product, junior guard Sydney Hill (Edmond Memorial) is the team’s top returning scorer at 11.2 points per game, while sophomore forward McKenzie Stanford (Perkins) averaged 9.9 points and 4.6 rebounds last season.
In cross country, the Lady Eagles took sixth at the NCCAA meet, the program’s best-ever national finish. Sophomore Maci Rich of Marlow became just the fifth women’s cross country All-American in OC history.
