A Line in the sand is drawn! Faces are painted, bandanas are tied and camouflage is donned! Signs are painted and hung, and t-shirts are made. Games are circled on calendars and special gadget plays are
drawn up. These are just a few of the things that go into the preparation for the biggest game of the year. The RIVALRY game is THAT game that
can essentially decide the success of the entire athletic season. Oh sure Norman High can win their district, but get beat by Norman North and ask head coach Greg Nation if there isn’t a bad taste in his mouth. I promise you we all KNOW what he will say.
Rivalries are often about tradition and turf. They can be about two teams that share a town or about who owns the bridge that separates two
towns. They can often times be fueled by off the field events, parents’
involvement, or which booster club has the most money. One thing is for sure however, they are ALWAYS settled on the field.
This issue of the magazine is dedicated to the RIVALRY game. You will read terms like WAR, CLASH, and MYAHEM. These are SERIOUS terms that describe a high school athletic contest. This is INTENSE talk for a
mere game. Well, all the hyperbole aside, I want to challenge you VYPE NATION to get out to your school’s rivalry game this season. VYPE will a RIVALRY. Share some history with us. Send us your student section photos! (mark.lockhart@vype.com) Let us in on the off-field battles the start of the 2010 high school football season!

Run Wild I thought your feature on the running backs last month was spot on. In my opinion we have the top running backs in the state and this is the year the West side dominates football. And yes we will bring home a gold ball in Class 6A! I called it here first. Thanks again for the running back story, maybe next month you’ll do something on the receivers we have!

Running Backs Left Out I think you left out of couple of great running backs last month. Saul Pina from Clinton rushed for more than a 1,000-yards last year and scored 13 touchdowns. Devin Campbell from Bethany is an every down back that’s proven. He will break the all-time rushing record at Bethany this season. Just wanted to throw in my two cents.
Readers Survey I have my Readers Survey, but I wanted to include of few more comments that I think will help you make your publication better. I also have some story ideas. Can I send you all the information at once? Last question, what’s in the prize pack? Jill T. Mustang, OK Editor’s Note: (Thanks Jill. YES, send in everything you have. We love getting feedback from the readers. As for the prize pack, basically we’re putting that together, but it will include some gear from our events and some items we’re getting from advertisers.)
I noticed you do product reviews and I was wondering how I can get my instructional DVD’s reviewed. I’ve coached girls softball in Texas for 30 years and recently moved to Oklahoma. I’ve noticed the softball is played at a high level in Oklahoma and wanted an opportunity for my instructional DVD’s to be seen. Your magazine would be a great place to start. Thanks for considering me. Larry K. Piedmont, OK

Football Preview I recently purchased a copy of the football preview and was extremely disappointed with the coverage of the teams. Then I realized I was not reading a VYPE magazine, but one from a group I’ve never heard of. So I went to Wal-Mart and purchased a copy of the VYPE preview. Wow, no comparison. Ron’s Hamburgers & Chili – Tulsa, OK
Eischen’s Chicken – Okarche, OK
Eischens!!! Enough said. One of VYPE’s favorite places. Officially introduced by Pioneer’s Kim Grellner. Whether you are going to see a Kingfisher, Watonga, or Hennessey game, if the opportunity presents itself, it is sac-religious not to indulge. Order the okra and a couple of whole chickens and you will be set. 405-263-9939

A VYPE favorite when traveling through Plainsmen Country, Flamingo’s and their homemade chili will leave you stuffed. Enjoy some of the best and tastiest burgers and don’t forget to try the chili cheese nachos before going to see Coach Tommy Parker’s crew take care of business. Also don’t forget the old-school arcade in the back. Mark Lockhart’s favorite. 580-234-9006
Mahylon’s BBQ – Muskogee, OK
Every Rougher knows about Mahylon’s. Don’t bother with the menu, the list of food items, great specials, and awesome sides are painted on the wall. Just look up, point it out, and you are good to go. The VYPE Special includes a hotlink with onion rings as an appetizer, from there, you can go any direction. But the ribs are to die for. The Bruins have a special place. Murphy’s is known for its hot brown. Or you can order a hamburger covered with fries and brown gravy. Bill Huddleston’s favorite is the hit brown topped off with a piece of homemade pie. “Murphy’s, Now that’s what I am talking about!” says Huddleston. 918-336-4789
Johnnie’s Grill – El Reno Oklahoma
The Indians have a claim to fame at Johnnie’s. The best grilled onion burger in the state. Even if you are taking I-40 out to see Clinton or Weatherford, save thirty minutes to stop in to Johnnie’s and go to town. VYPE’s choice is to take a few burgers to go, because they are just as good refrigerated and nuked as they are off the grill. 405-262-4721
Pollyanna Cafe – Woodward, OK
The Williams Family has been taking care of people in Woodward for over 50 years. WESTMOORE BILLY LANGFORD Vype: You take over the head coaching position at a school where the former head coach, Mike Whaley had a great influence on you. Langford: Oh no doubt. Coach Ty Prestige at Mustang has also played a big role in getting me to this level too.

Vype: You were head coach at Blanchard for five years before becoming an assistant at Mustang for the last four years. What has been the biggest adjustment moving from Class 3A up to the state’s largest class?
24
Langford: The biggest difference is the number of people you have to manage. At Blanchard it was me and four assistants and now it’s me and eight assistants. More media requests too! (laughs).
Vype: So you come from Mustang where they were known for their wide-open passing attack. Westmoore until last year had always been known for their rugged, smash-mouth running game. Where do you see the Jaguar offensive attack for 2010? Langford: Somewhere in the middle. I feel like I helped get the spread run-game to a new level at Mustang,
so we’ll run a no huddle quick snap offense. It won’t be the check-with-me offense some other teams run. We’re going to get to the line of scrimmage and go. Not let the defense get set and make adjustments. We want the defense to be scrambling and have to make adjustments to what we’re doing.
Vype: You were able to work with your guys in the spring and summer so what do you feel will be the strengths of the Jaguars in 2010?
Langford: Defense. We feel like we have a good front seven with guys like Kyle Factor, Cody Cates and Bryan Norris among others and while our secondary is going to be young, we like the guys we have back there.
Vype: Let’s talk about the Moore War. Very first game as head coach is Moore War. What are your thoughts about that game?
Langford: The kids are always talking about Moore War. Obviously, a big game right out of the chute and with Southmoore the following week you know you’ve got two tough battle to get you ready for district play. While those two games are important to this school and this community we don’t want to hang our whole season on those two games. Either way our expectations are to go out and win those two football games.
Vype: Thanks coach and good luck.

for the Volunteers by playing as a true freshman and
accounting for three TDs

scores was an overtime catch against Kentucky. Jones also rushed for 39 yards in the SEC Championship game. Jones accounted for
over 800 total yards as a

Jones asserted himself as the

I wanted to email in and ask you about holding calls in football. I’m confused on exactly what constitutes holding. So offensive linemen can grab the jersey as long as they are inside on the chest, but they can not grab outside on the shoulders, is that right? This is one of those calls that could be flagged on every play in my opinion. Yes, holding can be called on almost every play, however holding is one of the most difficult penalties for an official to master. In my opinion holding should always be called based on the severity, and the kind of affect it has on the play. For example, if a sweep is going left and the right tackle is holding the defensive end, who is obviously out of the play, that may not be a good time to call holding. Here are some factors that officials look at when calling holding. One thing to always remember is holding should be called at the point of attack. Here are some things to consider.
• Did the blocker gain an unfair advantage from the hold? • Did the defender have his jersey stretched or have to reach for the ball carrier with one arm? • Was the disengagement between the holder and the person who was being held legal? • Was he taken in a direction by the hold to an undesired location? • Did the defender give up on his pursuit by having a step taken away from him as the result of a hold?
Q A
I’ve yet to find anyone that can answer this question so I thought I would give you a chance. In fast pitch softball why don’t the umpires call the pitches for illegal pitches when their feet get outside the circle? This is never called and they let these pitchers get away with it all the time. Hope you can shed some light on the subject. I have never heard this question. The pitching circle, is used for the “lookback” rule, primarily with that said, I have found nothing in the rulebook, stating getting out of the circle is an illegal pitch. As for why it is not called, it would not be a primary focus by umpires, so they probably wouldn’t see it. The plate umpire is looking at the delivery and pitch, the field umpire is looking for a check swing and runners, so they just don’t see what happens on the follow through. I know this doesn’t answer your question, but might shed a little light as to why it isn’t called.

The leading passer in 6A with nearly 2,800 yards and 28 touchdowns last season, Kendal Thompson returns for the Sabercats this season. Joining Thompson in the backfield is running back Andrew Long A 1,500 yard rusher last season, Long hit pay dirt a total of 11 times last season. Both will benefit by a strong trio of lineman. Lucas Stalnaker, Tylor Whitfield, JP Hendrick. Sophomores Spencer Martin, Cody Earp and Nick Ward could step up to fill the void at wide receiver. Jackson Stallings will be looked upon to fill the void at tight end. Leading the way on defense will be outside linebacker D’Vante Henry. He’ll be joined by Kaleb Thompson while Jackson Stallings may see time as well at one of the linebacker spots. Both will be key player makers defensively for the Sabercats. In the secondary Austin Brooks will be the leader of the defensive backfield. Tre Edwards is another young player that could see time defensively within the secondary. The biggest game of the season will be against Jenks after the Trojans knocked off the Sabercats in the 2009 Class 6A semi-finals.

Quarterback Vova Razryvin returns to the Lions this season. Last year as a junior, Razryvin produced over 1,250 yards. Joe Haddox, Ryan Cain, Corey Reeves, Brandon Eddins and Grant Linstead will bring great depth to the receiving corps. Reeves shows big play promise at and could also see time at quarterback. Linstead was called the best wide receiver by coach Scott Myers after being injured as a sophomore. Up front along the offensive line is Van Gray at tackle, whom coach Myers called the most dominating down guy for Moore along with center Dakota Gilbert. The defense will be led by linebacker David Cowan and he’ll be joined in the linebacker corps by Taylor Lewis and Joey Kard. On the defensive front Ryan Cain will be a force yet again off the edge for the Lions along with Caleb Diggs Ethan Birdwell, and Juan Gonzalez.
It all starts upfront for the Jaguars with Tackle Tyler Newton and Guard Justin Smith. They will be joined by John Jacob Finn. They will be leading the way for running back Cody Feuerborn, a great combination of speed and toughness. The quarterback position looks like it will come down to senior Lionard Fombe and last years starter junior Trevor Thompson .Whoever is the signal caller, will have the benefit of a good receiving duo in Corey Pompey and Dalton Craig. Senior leadership at linebacker is the first thing that stands out when looking at the 2010 version of the Jaguars. Cody Cates has a great nose for the ball and is joined by Bo Hurst and Bryan Norris. Those three seniors will be joined by Josh Morgan. Along the defensive line will be the hard nosed Kyle Factor and the athletic Jake Woods. The Jaguars will see where they stand early playing Moore and Southmoore in the first two weeks of the season.

Things will get started with the play of Cameron Doolittle at quarterback. Last season Doolittle passed for just over 600 yards along with six touchdowns and over 1,000 yards rushing. At running back the Bulldogs will go with the two-headed monster of Cale Olbert and Gavin Fouts. Olbert rushed for over 600 yards last season while hitting pay dirt six times. The offensive line will be strong, led by the play of Jacob Wright and Lucas Tipton. Battling at the offensive tackle are Zach Garlitz and Nate Riney, which will likely continue during the preseason but will only improve both players. The Bulldogs will depend upon defensive tackle Connor Myers to lead the way up front with Jared Chambers. Ry Huff and Matt Hickman have asserted themselves as the men in the middles of the defense. In the secondary Jeff Balkenbush, Cameron Riney and Hunter Dawson will lead the way. Kicking duties will be enhanced by Will Conant.

For Edlam success, things will begin with quarterback Travis Townsend as he returns this season. After throwing for 1,154 yards and seven touchdowns while battling injuries. Jared Benway (5-10, 186, Jr.) will take over the running back duties this season after averaging four yards per carry in limited playing time in 2009. Benway suffered an injury during preseason drills and will be spelled by new move-in Jarion Tudman from Texas during the first part of the year at least. He’ll be joined by Ryan Hammons at times but look for Benway to see the rock many times a game. Look for Donquay Hammons to take an increased role in the receiving corps. Phillip White, Heath Newland, and Lex Rosson return on the offensive line. Kyle Aschenbrenner tallied 36 tackles and two sacks on the D-line and will be joined by Brayden Prough and Evan Whitt. the three schools have been playing every year since then. 2009 was the first time-ever, that all three teams made the playoffs. Kelly Gregg played for North in ’93 and ’04, but started as a sophomore for Memorial in ’92. Gregg was a three-time state champion wrestler. During his time on the football field Gregg was a two-time All-State selection. Gregg played at OU and has been an NFL veteran for 13 years now. Marcus Nash was one of Memorial’s best
Offensively the Wolves possess plenty of athleticism at the skill positions which coach Bruce Gowen believes can make the difference between going to the playoffs and staying home. Two of the athletes that will help in Edlam are Patrick Hinton and Tre’ Kelley. Gowen will also count upon Phillip Sumpter at running back. Moving the pile will be Josh Crouch and Steven Mize. Going headto-head for the signal caller slot are Ty Hensley and Paul Bronson. The linebacker corps wreaking havoc in Edlam will be headlined by Brady Bell, Conner Bays and Ryan Frazier. At free safety Brandon Reece brings great size and length to the defensive backfield. Sumpter, Trevan Smith, David Barker and Zach Birts will handle the defensive backfield duties. Coach Gowen expects defensive end Able Baker to make a difference off the edge. Punting duties will be up for grabs after the graduation of Matt Leavell, which will be important to fill as field position makes a difference. This year’s Edlam game with Memorial will test the Wolves as Memorial has re-established itself as a playoff contender.

Look for move-in Emilio Gatewood to see playing time at running back as well. Daniel Davis is an exceptional athlete that will see time at tight end and halfback. On the offensive line Caleb Cline will be opening holes for the playmakers. Jack Davis is a youngster that could see playing time along the line for the Timberwolves. The biggest position battle will be at wide receiver, but look for Sophomore DJ Hicks to make an impact. Coach expects his team “to play unselfish, with no sense of entitlement while playing sound football.” In the role of ironman for the Timberwolves will be two way starter Daniel Davis. He’ll be joined along the line by nose guard Derek Morton. They’ll look to take on blocks to try and free up the linebacker corps led by Daniel Moses and Zac Pierce. D.J. Mid-Del News and Notes: Ghost of Rose Field One late night, as a plane was taking off from Tinker Air Base, the plane crashed and killed all twelve people on board. The plane crashed into a field not far from the air base. A few years later, the school district decided to build Midwest City’s football stadium there. To this day, the Ghost of Rose Field haunts the stadium at night and is said to be one of the many reasons Jim Darnell Stadium is one of the hardest places to play in the state of Oklahoma. The Midwest City was named as the first undefeated 6A football national champion. At Midwest City High, it’s often stated:
“Winning, it’s not pressure, it’s a way of life”. Some call it tradition and some call it spirit, but the Midwest City community calls it “Bomber Magic”. Every year, Midwest City plays Del City in the Sooner Road rivalry during “Beat Del City Week.” Although Del City won the first meeting between these football powers, Midwest City has largely dominated the series since its inception in the 1950s. Early in 2009, the Midwest City-Del City School Board held a bond to detail and build a new turf field for Midwest City High School. The bond issue passed with a 79% approval rating. The field will be open for the 2010 football season.

The offense will be led by quarterback Corben Jones once again. Jones passed for nearly 2,000 yards and 20 touchdowns as a sophomore last season. Making things better, Jones has a talented receiving corps returning in Kollin Retter, Jordan Edwards, Eric Granado, and Kaiden Horn. Derek Deeds will also be a great asset at receiver. The key will be the development of the offensive line. Coach Wilson believes that Yukon has plenty of skill players that given the time by the offensive line could make the Millers a good team. One of those players that need just a little
time and a hole is running back Terry Jones. Tyrell Barker is another young guy to watch as he will man the tight end position giving Corben Jones yet another receiving option. Jake Henderson will lead the Miller defense from his linebacker position. Joining him at linebacker is Carson Mathews. They won’t be the only defensive duo causing problems as Jake Doyle and Andrew Edwards will be attacking the quarterback off the edge. After a 4-7 record last season the Eagles will look to turn things around. The battle at quarterback will be one to watch with Adrian McDonald and Ivan Rosas. In the backfield the Eagles will count upon Senior Louis Durant. Durant rushed for nearly 700 yards last season along with eight touchdowns while averaging six yards a reception. Also in the backfield will be Nathan Locke who averaged 6.21 yards per carry in limited playing time. Adrian Woodard will be a big threat at wide receiver. His big play threat will be more important this season as the Eagles look to increase their offensive prowess. A depleted secondary will leave multiple players battling for playing time. The linebacker corps returns Dillon Pulliam who averaged 12.4 tackles and recorded five sacks last season. Jordan Bridges was able to tally 5.4 tackles per game from his linebacker spot and looks to increase his production. Look for continued great production of John Hambrick. Last season Hambrick averaged six tackles a game and got to the quarterback three times last season.

Wojciechowski and Perry are big play threats on every down. The starter as the running back will be Treyvon Cooper. Coach Breeze and the team as a whole have great expectations for this year and the players are focused. Zimmerman and Wojciechowski will go both ways this season as they spend time in the defensive backfield for the Wolverines. Taylor Hawkins and Dillan Dansby will compete to take over the reigns at QB. Easing some of that pressure off the quarterback in 2010 will be an experienced offensive line and running back Kenton Whittington. Whittington dazzled at times last year and will be running behind Kyle Croak, Anthony Frazier, and Colin Walker. Also look for Rayshawn Cato and Steven Dunham to contribute on the O-line and tight end Austen Roselius. Darren Colquitt will take care of one defensive end position along with Quincy Johnson while Willis Lusk and Pat Elliot will compete for the interior duties of the line. Speed is the key for the linebackers as Kevin Jones and Jeremiah Reed will be tracking opposing running backs all season long. Another strong suit for Rose’s defense is the secondary where University of Tulsa verbal commit Dwight Dobbins will lead the corps of players. Alex Polston returns and Justin Love, Darrian Winston and A.J. Wilson will help round out a talented but young secondary.
The Bluejays will rely upon Kentrell Brothers an athletic phenom that will force opponents to focus on him giving his teammates opportunities. Quarterback Bryan Dutton returns after throwing 26 touchdowns as a freshman last season. Protecting the left side of the line is Blake Belcher who has tremendous potential. A player to watch is Richard Brothers, Kentrell’s younger brother who offers the same great athleticism. Last season the Bluejays made a run to the semi-finals with a young team and may be ready to take the next step. Linebacker Landry Chappell returns after finishing second in the state in tackles. Younger players that could surprise are Vincent Norris, J.T. McFadden and Luke Davis. Kentrell Brothers will also play defensive end bringing his athleticism to the edge where coach Watkins considers him to be the “best sack man in the state.” Defensive tackle will be manned by Felix Scott and Cody Doyle.

That got a lot of talk on radio and newspapers. The two schools combined have won seven of the last 10 Class 5A state championships (CA with 5

Barry Sanders Jr. looks to follow up on a great sophomore season (1,707 yards rushing and combined 30 touchdowns) and should have plenty of help from an offense that returns seven starters. Sterling Shephard, and Cooper Cloud could share quarterback duties as both threw for over 600 yards last year and both are expected to figure heavily in the pass game on the receiving end too. Junior Cale Courtney and senior Shawn Tkach also figure to get plenty of touches
when the opposing defenses are trying to stop Sanders the Charger run game. Upfront the Chargers are lead by Markus Wakefield, Quintez Struble, Bill Johnson, and Mitch Dolan. Many of the same names you see on the offensive side will be counted on for the defensive side of the ball. Wakefield and Struble on the defensive line and Sanders, Shephard, Tkach in the secondary along with cornerback Brent Gaddis and junior Brandon Mayes leads a group of linebackers that Bogert says has great sideline to sideline speed. Bogert said, “We played a lot of sophomore’s last year and feel like many of those guys should be ready to provide valuable leadership.”

The Cyclones lose 13 seniors off of last year’s squad, but they are fortunate to have some experienced talent returning. At quarterback, Mac Katigan will be leading the offense. When he is airing it out, he will be looking for junior Conner McMurrand, the lone returning starter at wide receiver. There will be a battle at running back, but keep your eye on junior Garrison Lee. Look for junior Ronnell Johnson to get into
the running back mix along with sophomore Michael Perry. Conner Morrison will be anchoring the line from his center position. He is the lone returning starter on the line, but he will be starting for his third season. The defensive line will be lead by college prospect Graham Bennett. The linebacker crew looks strong with Garrison Lee headlining the highly rated group. Sophomore Nick Jeffreys who started last year looks to step in and help out along with Adam Amil. Mac Katigan will be counted on to help out in the secondary in addition to his quarterback duties.

Bob Fenimore was the first football coach of Casady from 1950-1953. John Shelley was perhaps one of the best players out of Casady. Shelley went to OU and was an AllConference selection in 1971. Graham Colton quarterbacked the Chargers to
the Class 2A state title in 1998. Wes Welker was Graham’s favorite receiver. As a junior, Wes had 200 all-purpose yards, a 47-yard field goal, and an interception in the state title game. Welker also compiled 80 TDs, 190 tackles, 22 INTs, and nine fumble recoveries in his Charger career.

Taking over the quarterback responsibilities is Shon Bridges. Chris Compton is another option at quarterback, but he may fit better in the offense at wide receiver. The running backs are strong with Alliston Cobb returning for his final season at Douglass after for 711 yards and six touchdowns last year. Ian Robinson is another experienced back that rushed for 290 yards and three touchdowns in 2009. Darion White and Elijah Williams bring experience back to the offensive line. Eric King gets things fired up at linebacker. Opposite King was DeVante McKinney who recorded 15 sacks and 118 tackles. Marcus Caddell had three picks and 62 tackles last year. Defensive tackle Cayman Bundage had three sacks last season and is almost guaranteed to increase those numbers in 2010. Senior Ravi Riley may go both ways on the offensive line and at defensive end. The defense is quick, nasty and plays with attitude. Look for this group to continue the winning ways and have the Trojans competing for another state title.

The Falcons will once again look to quarterback Kevonte Richardson. Last Richardson is a Division-I prospect that will be counted upon to bring great leadership to the offense. Look for Allen Starks along with sophomores Diontay Washington and Tyjuan Turner to see time at running back. Richardson will look to a strong receiver corps of Josh Turner, Shevin Patton, Brandon Swindall and Michael Cole. The defensive secondary will be the strong suit of the Millwood defense led by Josh Turner. Turner, a Texas Longhorns commit, tallied 83 tackles last season along with two sacks and six interceptions. He’ll be joined in the defensive backfield by D-1 prospects Michael Cole, Brandon Swindall, and Shevin Patton. Senior Larry Seals returns at linebacker, after leading the team in tackles with 184 while adding six sacks. He’ll be joined at linebacker by Allen Starks and Diontay Washington. Division-I prospect Davion Pierson will anchor the defensive line from the tackle spot. At defensive end Clifford Lawrence (6-2, 187, Sr.) will look to be a force off the edge.

Despite dropping their first game against Tahlequah Sequoyah, 4-3 then going down to Claremore Sequoyah, 1-0 the Lady Broncos charged back to win four games in a row and bring home third place out of the “black bracket. They did this despite graduating the Gatorade Oklahoma Softball Player of the Year in Ashley Paxton.

Senior second baseman Courtni Clark and sophomore catcher Stormi Miller made excellent defensive plays to hold runners during their game against Bixby. Third baseman Laci Joyner and shortstop Kyndra Holasek could be the best tandem of infielders in the state. Joyner and Holasek were backed up by Tori Shockley and Jamie Rateliff in the outfield as the Lady Broncos won, 6-2 over the Lady Spartans. In the third place game against the Lady Rams of Owasso Shelby Dill, Kayla Adams, Kodi Jones, Katelyn Fischer and Caitlyn Clark helped the Lady Broncos to a 4-1 win. Miles, Joyner and Legg had big roles in the win as well.
After the tournament the Lady Broncos hosted and beat Yukon, 5-1. Yukon made it to the finals of the “black bracket, but never faced Mustang during the tournament. Coach Wade and assistant coach Jerry Long and the Lady Broncos have a long season ahead of them. Road games against Midwest City, Carl Albert and the Putnam City Tournament in mid-September will help determine how far this team is capable of going in the regional and state tournaments. The state tournament is set for October 14-16th at Hall of Fame Stadium.

ome children follow in their parent’s footsteps in athletics or the family business, but it marks a unique and caring one that takes part in his father’s passion for a cause. A series of events led Joe Wilhite to start 1002miles. com. Due to a stress fracture in his foot, he began riding a bike for exercise versus running. As the marketing director for the Men of Oklahoma calendar, which raises money for the Susan G. Komen foundation, he decided to combine his bike riding and fund raising into project with hopes of collecting $10 a mile for his 1,002 miles ridden so that he can present a check for $10,000 on the night of the kickoff party for the calendar.
This brings us to Joe’s son, eleven-year-old Jackson. Wanting to assist his dad in some way in this cause, it was decided he probably couldn’t ride 1,002 miles, but could do 102 miles. With that, the 102 Mile For the Cure Club took off. Along with some friends, Jackson began canvassing the neighborhood asking for donations for his cause. So far he has been very successful, raising nearly $1,000.
With the success he has seen up to this point, Jackson has the ultimate goal of going nationwide with this project so that kids all across the country can be involved. Like his father, he is keeping a log of all the miles he rides as well as the donations he takes in. When Jackson isn’t riding his bike around his Norman neighborhood, he is a typical fifth grader at Truman Elementary School and is an aspiring soccer player.
To learn more, go to 1002miles.com. There you can read Joe’s blog and find out more about the cause and what got Joe so passionate in finding a cure. More importantly you can pre-order the Men of Oklahoma 2011 calendar as well as order “Kick Cancers Nuts” peanuts, with proceeds going towards cancer research.

Hot Careers with Quick Turnaround at Rose State College
ONE
of the quickest ways to turn around a sagging income or get a new lease on a career is to get an associate’s degree at a community college like Rose State College. Living the good life for many may require at least four years or more at a large, named university for many occupations. Two-year degrees at a community college have always offered a great value and a head-start to a four-year college degree at a university.
However, some degrees open the door to a lucrative career after only two years. Degrees in healthrelated occupations, like nursing, radiology, respiratory therapy, dental hygiene; or businessoriented degrees, such as paralegal, webmaster or cyber security can land one an occupation that are the envy of many with four-year or more degrees. Careers such as these offer the possibility of a lucrative income in a short amount of time, and at a state community college like Rose, at a very reasonable cost.
• Registered nurse. This well-known profession is in high demand and growing. According to a recent report by the Oklahoma Nursing Board, the state is expected to need 3,000 more nurses by 2015. Pay is good at more than $50,000 a year.
No matter what path one may choose, however, the first step is enrolling. For more information visit Rose State College’s Student Services or call (405) 733-7372.

Another occupation that has good pay and a quick turnaround is legal assistant, or “Paralegal”. Paralegals do many tasks that attorneys do, freeing the attorneys for work that requires a law degree. Two-year graduates of Rose State’s program can make as much as $30,000 starting.

If computer security doesn’t sound appealing, there
• Respiratory therapist. These professionals administer care to those with heart or lung ailments, often requiring the use of a ventilator. The median pay for this occupation is listed at more than $50,000 a year.
SEPTEMBER 2010
Dewey said graduates of Rose State’s program often land jobs at the Pentagon, the FBI or private security businesses for around $50,000 a year starting pay.
• Dental Hygienist. This profession works side-by-side with dentists, examining patients’ gums, perform cleanings, and take X-rays. Income is listed at more than $60,000, according to the article.
::
“There is a very high demand for this occupation and it doesn’t look like it’s going to slow down anytime soon,” Dewey said.
• Radiologic Technologist, or Radiographer. A radiographer uses electronic imaging (X-Rays) to produce diagnostic pictures of patients for doctors. The projected median income for this profession is more than $50,000 a year.

At Rose State College, Ken Dewy heads the only cyber security educational program in the country at a community college that is certified at all six levels of government training. Dewey said his program is being partially funded by the National Science Foundation so that students demonstrating financial need can take classes free.
are plenty of health-related professions with top pay for only a two-year degree. A recent article in U.S. News and World Report singled out several occupations found at Rose State College as among the best careers for the coming decade:
