Success is measured in many different ways. Head volleyball coach at
8
Southwest Covenant, Samantha Lindsey measures success by wins and losses, academic achievement and the attitude of her athletes. To say she has been a success as head coach is an understatement. But she would simply say she is blessed.
“I have been blessed with a group girls that are very coachable. They listen and try to do the things I teach them. We were also Academic State Champs this season, which was a great accomplishment. We faced many obstacles this season with injuries and were forced to play different people in the line-up multiple times and as a team they kept overcoming those challenges and got better and better because of it,” said Lindsey.
As a team SW Covenant finished ranked in the top ten at No. 8 with a record of 19-8 in Class 3A. The support the team has received is exciting and the players respond when the home crowd gets into a match. “We have a great support system for our program. It the support continues to grow each and every year,” said Lindsey.
Making the state tournament this year was certainly a goal coming into the season. This wasn’t their first time to the big dance, but they knew the element of surprise was gone and teams expected them to play well. “This was our second appearance in two years. Last year we came in as the 8th seed and under
performed, but walked away wanting more. Coming into this season we had set our goal of a much better showing at state. Do to different circumstances we again came in as the 8th seed. But, we didn’t let that keep us down. We played our hearts out against the number one seed Corn Bible Academy. We even took a 2-0 lead on them. Unfortunately, we lost in the 5th set 15-17. I was so proud of the effort the girls gave me. I couldn’t have asked for more,” said Lindsey. Now the program looks ahead to next season and the daunting task of moving up in class.
“We recently learned because of our back to back state appearances we will have to move up to 4A this upcoming season. We realize this will be a challenge, but we are ready for it. I have a very young team not even any seniors this next season, I can’t wait to see how these girls develop and compete over the next couple years,” said Lindsey.

BULLDOGS
BOYS Shane Cowherd 16-17 Record: 13-14 The Bulldogs sniffed the title game last season, which only serves to make them hungry to fight their way back to the state tournament. “After finishing a game short of state, we feel like we have the pieces and experience to improve upon a very young squad from the year before. As always, defense will be key at Memorial,” said coach Shane Cowherd. A pair of guards will get things started for the Bulldogs. Drew Tennial (6-4, Jr.) averaged 9.5 points, 2.8 assists, 5.1 rebounds and 1.7 steals a game. Peyton Caldwell (6-2, Jr.) had similar numbers last season hitting 9.7 points, 1.4 rebounds and 0.9 assists per game. Cameron Graves (5-9, Sr.) is another guard who brings leadership and a solid work ethic to the floor. Graves averaged 5.1 points and 3.2 assists a year ago. Forward Jacob Thionnet (6-5, Jr.) gives the Bulldogs some size in the paint, while Dylan Youngblood (6-2, Jr.) delivers on the defensive end of the court. Will Sweat (6-5, Sr.) will play the role of the 6th man this season. Also look for John Caldwell (5-10, Sr.) at guard. The senior averaged 3.6 points and 1.3 steals a game. The

Of those five starters, two are VYPE Top 100 selectees. “I look forward to an outstanding year returning all five starters. The team has worked extremely hard during the offseason to get stronger and focus on the little things. They are a special group of young women. I am truly blessed to be their coach,” said coach Peeler. Taylor Norman (5-5, Jr.) averaged 14 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 3.0 assists per game. Norman is a slasher with the ball and can hit from just about any spot on the floor. Katelyn Levings (6-3, So.) is a two-time VYPE Top 100 selectee and one of the top players in the state. Levings averaged 8.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.0 blocks per game. Kendra Levings (5-11, Sr.) will start at guard where she averaged 7.5

Erdoes averaged 5.0 points and 5.0 rebounds, while Ingram accounted for 5.0 points and 4.0 rebounds a game. Erin Talbott (6-0, Jr.) will see time at forward giving coach Peeler a 4-point, 4-rebound player off the bench. GIRLS Paul Bass 16-17 Record: 25-3 “Play hard and play smart,” is the message from head coach Paul Bass. With two returning starters off a team that won 25 games, there are a few questions that need answered. But one questions position that’s shored up is guard. Raven Nero (5-9, Sr.) is a VYPE Top 100 selectee and a player that is tough to contain. Last season she averaged 11 points and 5.0 rebounds a game. Couple her with Makayla Foy (5-7, Sr.) who averaged 7.0 points and 3.2 rebounds and you have a tandem that’s as good as any in the class. Post player Maikayla Chambers (6-2, Sr.) will
need to be big on both ends of the court this season. Last year she averaged 3.0 points and 4.0 rebounds. Look for her numbers to go up. Keira Neal (5-9, Jr.) and Kryslyn Jones (5-7, Jr.) are heady players on offense and salty defenders on the other end. Neal accounted for 3.0 points and 3.3 rebounds, while Jones hit 4.3 points and 2.0 rebounds a game. Ahoneste Walker (5-6, Fr.) is a young, but talented player coach Bass is looking forward to utilizing this season. Other players to watch include Jasmine Taplin (5-6, Sr.), Kaylee Nero (6-0, So.), Cedar Stewart (5-7, So.), Kelsey Johnson (6-0, Jr.) and Mariah Jones (5-7, Sr.). BOYS UNI_16-INED-007_Edmond_Brand_MiscPubs.indd 1 Josh Williams 16-17 Record: 15-12 In his second season as head coach, Josh Williams is excited and focused on getting the season started. He returns three starters from last season and that experience will be crucial if the Wolves are going to take that next step and become one of the powerhouses in Class 6A basketball. With four VYPE Top 100 players on the roster, expectations are very high. “We have a very talented group that loves to compete. We have very high expectations of ourselves and can’t wait to get started,” said coach Williams. At guard, senior Tauriawn Knight (6-1) averaged 13 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists and leads the returning starters in scoring. Knight is joined in the backcourt by point guard Kamden Gipson (5-10, Sr.). Gipson averaged 11.1 points, 3.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game last season. Ben Smith (6-5, Jr.) will start at forward where his 5.0 points and 4.0 rebounds per game will certainly come into play. Jaylen O’Conner (6-4, Jr.) is electric and has great floor vision. O’Conner averaged 5.0 points and 3.0 rebounds a game last year. Diego Gray transferred from Mustang and is expected to make an impact as well. Tyus Jefferies (6-2, Sr.) is another forward coach Williams will use in the rotation. Jefferies can score averaging 9.0 points and 3.0 rebounds. Other players to watch include Donovan Vickers (6-2, So.), Jamaal Smith (6-7, Sr.), Aeneas White (5-11, Sr.), Kristian Khoury (6-0, Jr.), Zadok Martin (6-2, Jr.) and Garrett Foskin (510, Jr.). In his second season as head coach, Rodney Dindy is excited to see what this team can accomplish as they return VYPE Top 100 selectee Jake Ogle (6-7, Sr.) to the starting lineup. “We are looking forward to the 2017-18 season with a strong senior class. It should be an exciting year for this Norman High School team,” said coach Dindy. Last season Ogle averaged 10 points and 4.0 rebounds per contest and is looking for
more this season. Ogle will have some help in fellow seniors Bryce Mooreland (6-0) and Shane Didiuk (6-5). Mooreland averaged 7.0 points and 5.0 assists per game, while Didiuk accounted for 10 points and 3.0 rebounds. Norman also picked up a transfer player in Jakaree Holmes (6-1, Sr.) who is expected to start at one of the guard spots. Kolby Gipson (6-4, Jr.) brings excellent size and experience to the floor and look for Ben Emmert (6-4, So.) is developing into a quality player coach DIndy will count on for good minutes this season. Other players to watch this season include Dayten Holman (6-5, So.) and Montrey Cobb (6-1, Sr.). success of the program. Leading the way on the court is Turner Mattingly (5-9, Jr.) at guard. Mattingly averaged 10 points, 3.0 assists and 3.0 rebounds last year. She has the most experience on the court for the Lady Tigers and will play a combo type guard spot for coach Neal. Kelbie Washington (5-7, Fr.) will start at the point this season. She is an excellent defender and runs tempo on offense. Washington is a four-sport star at Norman playing basketball, volleyball, track and soccer. Kayla Albright (5-7, Sr.) at guard has an excellent outside shot. Albright transferred from Midwest City. Haley Hurst (5-11, Sr.) is a returning forward and a team captain. Nyah Henderson (5-7, Jr.) plays forward, but is really more of a guard. She brings high energy and rebounds well for her size. Junior guard Christina Shadid (5-7) is a shooter off the bench who can spark the offense. Alex Blackwell (6-0, Sr.) is known for her rebounding and interior defense. Gabbi Thomason (5-5, So.) plays hard and looks for the open shot. Kamryn Defreeze (5-8, Sr.) and Taj Cox (5-7, Sr.) are known for their defense and rebounding. Samone Webber (5-8, Jr.) is an aggressive forward, while Faith Richards (5-7, Jr.) can defend the perimeter. Expect the Lady Tigers to have another solid season and if a few bounces go their way, maybe a trip to the state tournament.

Norman North graduated a two-time Mr. Basketball Oklahoma player, but head coach Bryan Merritt expects his seniors to step up this season and fill that void. “We must have good leadership from our seniors to be successful after losing Trae Young. We can shoot well, but we must rebound and defend to win,” said coach Merritt. Jalen Crutchfield (6-4, Sr.) is one of three returning starters off last year’s team. Crutchfield will start at guard with Drake Stoops (5-11, Sr.) and Juwan White (6-2, Sr.). All three players can shoot the rock and run the floor. Shemar Smith (6-6, Jr.) draws the trench work at forward/center. Smith has to get it done on the boards this season for the Timberwolves. Brandis Fender (6-0, Sr.) could be that spark on defense coach Merritt is looking for this season. Cole Robertson (5-10, Sr.) and Peyton Vinyard (5-11, Jr.) are great options for the 6th man role. Other players to look for include Josh Robinson (64, Jr.), Josh Crutchfield (6-4, Jr.), Ian Bell (6-0, Jr.), Colton Castleberry (5-10, Sr.) and Ryan Rasnic (6-0, Sr.). No changes to the coaching staff that features Jake Rudd, Billy Barnard
GIRLS Rory Hamilton 16-17 Record: 17-10
Last season Norman North made big strides toward becoming one of the top teams in the class as head coach Rory Hamilton won 17 games, getting the most out of the team down the stretch. “After losing in the consolation finals in the Class 6A state playoffs a year ago, the T-Wolves look to rebuild this season after graduating six seniors. We will be young and inexperienced at times but hope to improve as the season progresses and play their best basketball heading into the playoffs,” said coach Peeler. Jacie Evans (5-8, Jr.) and Lindsey Waters (5-6, Sr.) are two talented guards that can keep this team in any game. Evans averaged 10.9 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals, while Waters accounted for 7.0 points and 3.0 assist last season. Another dynamic duo for the T-Wolves is Emma Base (5-10, Jr.) and Jessika Evans (6-0, So.). Both are solid players in the paint. Base averaged 4.6 points and 4.5 rebounds with Evans scoring 2.7 points and grabbing 2.0 rebounds per contest. Kayton Kite (5-5, So.) is a young
guard with tremendous potential. Also look for Chloe Jones (5-9, Sr.) to find her way into the game early. Other players to watch include Monica McCombs (5-10, Jr.), Ashton Seratte (5-6, So,) Keely Chapman (5-7, Sr.), Jayda Whitley (5-6, Fr.) and Geraldine Udo (5-7, Jr.). The coaching staff includes Al Beal and Carol Testa.

RYAN PEOPLES – NORMAN NORTH Senior quarterback Ryan Peoples will leave his mark on the Timberwolves football program after a great season that witnessed him throwing for over 3,000 yards on 178 completions with 31 touchdowns. He also rushed the ball 78 times for 537 yards and three touchdowns. He even averaged 37.3 yards per punt. Offensively Peoples could be considered the most prolific player on the Norman North roster this season. But if you ask him about the stats and touchdown passes, Peoples is quick to give the credit to his teammates.
“It meant a lot to me to play with this group. All the seniors have been my friends since we were in elementary school and it was great being able to end my high school career with them,” said Peoples.
Despite the season not finishing the way Peoples and the rest of the Norman North football team wanted, Peoples reflects on what he will remember as a great senior campaign. “I’ll remember playing Union at Union the most. It was one of the craziest
football atmospheres I’ve ever felt even though we came up short,” said Peoples.
Peoples career is not over as he looks to continue playing football at the next level. “After I graduated I plan to continue playing football and getting a great education in college,” said Peoples.

Norman North Coach Spotlight Brent Barnes – Head Coach By Michael Kinney
Norman North has long ago established itself as one of the top teams in Class 6A. Since coach Brent Barnes has been in charge, the Timberwolves are always in contention to make a run deep in the playoffs.
But 2017 seemed to be a little different. North was under the radar for much of the season as everyone focused on the teams in the East. But by the end of the regular season, they were seen by many as the only team who could mount any type of attack to knock off one of the top four teams. In the playoffs, the T-Wolves came up a couple of plays short in a 31-28 loss to Broken Arrow in the first round. Yet, Barnes was happy with what he saw from his squad.
“It was a good season. Just like any, when you first start out, there's gonna be a few bumps along the road, especially for us,” Barnes said. “Coming into this season, we replaced nine guys on defense. I feel like they did a really good job, and you know, again I had some experienced guys and play-makers on offense, and they were able to step in, and do a really good job, as well.” Norman North finished the season with a 7-4 record. However, three of those defeats came to the eventual state champion Owasso, last year’s state champion Union and then BA in the playoffs. While many around Class 6A see the fact that
Union or Jenks didn’t win the state title for the first time in two decades as a glimmer of hope that parity is getting closer, Barnes is not in that camp.
“I think if it had been a west side team, it might be, but I think being just another east side team ... I think they're the fourth largest school,” Barnes said. “Being there on the east side, and Owasso had a great program for many years, and they just hadn’t quite broken through, and now that they have, I don't know that it changes. It doesn't change anything about what Jenks and Union are. It just, if anything else, means there's another one like them.”
The only team from the West that North lost to was Yukon in the second week of the season. But that upset seemed to get the Timberwolves focused on what needed to be done.
“I think the third week of the season, we kind of found a little bit about what we were, and what we are, and played really well from that stretch forward, and had a chance in every game,” Barnes said. “Owasso was about the only game that really got away from us. Every single other game was a ball game in the fourth quarter, and that's all you ask for, is go out there and compete, week in and week out, and have a chance in the end to win a game.”
With the experience collected on defense, North should be better able to compete with the top teams in the state next season. However, Barnes says they will have to replace some key offensive players such as Drake and Isaac Stoops, Ryan Peoples and Jake Simmons. “It'll be similar, the last year, we're gonna be replacing a lot of guys on offense this year, whereas our defense will be a little more experienced going into next year,” Barnes said. “And so, it'll kind of be the same thing, where guys will just have to come in and try to get to those expectations we have, and hopefully gain some experience during the year, and gain some confidence, and just get better as the season goes along.”

WESTMOORE JAGUARS BOYS Scott Hodges 16-17 RECORD: 21-6
Coming off a trip to the Class 6A state tournament the Westmoore Jaguars are looking to make another deep run and yet again give themselves a chance to compete for a gold ball this year. “We are excited about the potential of our team. We have a great opportunity to build on last season’s success with a lot of experience returning. This group plays extremely hard and plays together,” Westmoore head coach Scott Hodges said. Three returning starters headline Hodges’ group this season and that trio is led by point guard Will Graham (5-10, 155, Sr.). Last season Graham averaged 10.1 points per game to go along with 5.3 assists per contest. Damoriea Vick (6-4, 195, Sr.) is a long and athletic guard to contend with and should likely improve on his average of 9.7 points and 5.2 rebounds per game from a year ago. The last piece of Westmoore’s killer triumvirate is forward Jackson Dyer (6-9, 210, Sr.) who averaged 8.1 points and 7.6 rebounds as a junior. Other key members of the Jags’ rotation this year will be guards Kenny Springs (6-2, 165, Sr.) and Anthony Riley (6-4, 180, Jr.). Last season Springs averaged 7.0 points and 2.1 assists per game while Riley poured in an average of 5.1 points and hauled in an average of 4.1 rebounds. The biggest x-factor to the team however may be forward James Palmer (6-3, 215, Sr.) who did not play last year due to an injury. Jalen Breath (6-6, 180, So.) didn’t see varsity
action as a freshman a year ago but will be asked to step up and contribute this year as a sophomore. GIRLS Andrea Guziec 16-17 RECORD: 17-10
The Westmoore Lady Jaguars came into last season with high hopes, and while a 17-10 season and a trip to the Area tournament aren’t bad results the Lady Jaguars had hoped for more. This year though Westmoore brings back five starters and that veteran leadership has head coach Andrea Guziec excited about the potential of her squad. “We have a veteran team with a strong bench. We are building a chemistry that will make us a team to watch,” Guziec said. Anybody who has been paying attention to girls basketball in the state of Oklahoma for the past three years knows that for Westmoore everything revolves around dynamic guard Jessi Murcer (5-7, Sr.). As a junior, Murcer averaged 22.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.8 steals per game and could easily see those numbers rise this year. Don’t sleep on the other Murcer on the squad though as Kristen Murcer (5-5, Jr.) will likely start at the point this year after averaging 9.4 points, 3.5 assists, 2.4 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game last year. The other guard spot in the Westmoore lineup is
Go Jaguars!
likely to be filled by Jocelyn Smith (5-9, Jr.) who averaged 7.7 points, 2.6 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.3 steals per game last year. In the frontcourt Whitney Outon (6-0, Sr.) gives the Lady Jaguars a serious weapon in the post. As a junior, Outon averaged 6.7 points, 6.6 rebounds, 1.8 steals and 1.2 assists per game. Kendra Gillispie (6-2, Fr.) is also a name to remember although don’t bank on this young talent letting you forget. Jaycie Stonebraker (5-10, Sr.) will add some depth to the frontcourt this year as will Veronika Zilajeva (5-9, Sr.). Last season the duo of Stonebraker and Zilajeva combined to average 8.6 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. Also working off the bench this year will be guards Hannah Sykes (5-6, Sr.), Kelsi Fitzgerald (5-7, Jr.), Kamy Carter (5-5, Jr.) and Madison Hayes (5-8, So.). Rylee Masters (5-8, Jr.) rounds out the Westmoore roster as a forward who will also work off the bench.

MOORE LIONS BOYS Gregg Hardin 16-17 Record: 9-15
Head coach Gregg Hardin has his team improving and working hard every day to meet the challenges of a tough Class 6A schedule. “The Lions are steadily improving each day. In order for us to be successful this season we will have to play together and get it done on both ends by committee. We have a chance to be a really good basketball team if we come together and play as one. Looking forward to seeing how this year plays out,” said coach Hardin. Beau Archer (6-1, Sr.) averaged 13.6 points and 4.6 assists, while shooting 62% from the field. His leadership will play a huge role in the overall success of the Lions this season, but he’s doesn’t have to shoulder the entire load. Enter Niko Williams (6-3, Jr.). Williams has good length and is receiving interest from several mid-major schools. JaLen Harrison (6-0, Sr.) is a defensive minded player that brings leadership to the floor for the Lions. Germar Harrison (5-9, Sr.) will start at guard and run the offense this season. Ricky Jones (5-9, Jr.) transferred to Moore this year and will be an asset to the team. Jassiaahya Jackson (5-8, Jr.) is one of the top 3-point shooters on the team. Jo Roane (6-3, So.) is a young player
that already developed an inside presence. Kian Avery (5-9, Sr.) and Rylan Meek (6-1, Sr.) are expected to contribute this season. Meek is known for his toughness and work ethic. The coaching staff includes Jerrame Dockery, Matt Lohn and Ryan Dukes. GIRLS Brent Hodges 16-17 Record: 11-13
Head coach Brent Hodges could be coaching the most talented girls basketball team to ever take the court for Moore High School. Three of his five starters at VYPE Top 100 players with Gabby Guzman (5-5, Sr.) averaged 11.1 points and 3.2 assists while shooting 37% from 3-point range. Guzman brings good energy to the floor and is the senior leader of this team. Peyton Andrews (5-9, Fr.) has offers from Lipscomb, Murray State and is being recruited by several Big 12 schools. She’s also listed on the Blue Stars Top 100 freshmen in America. Aaliyah Moore (6-2, Fr.) has offers from OSU, Michigan, Alabama, Louisville and is being recruited by several others. Moore, like Andrews, is one of the Top
100 freshmen in the country. Ashonti Day (5-5, So.) averaged 12.4 points, 2.1 assists and 2.8 steals last season and is expected to continue playing a major role in the success of the team. Tyaunna Vaught (6-0, So.) was injured last season and is ready to get a taste of varsity ball. Destiny Davis (5-7, Sr.) averaged 5.1 points and 3.6 rebounds last year and is always ready when her number is called. Other players to watch include Kyla Gipson (5-9, Sr.), Alyssa Williams (6-4, So.), Kearra Higgs (5-7, Sr.) and Peyton Simmons, a transfer from Choctaw. The coaching staff consists of Pam Swanson, Zac Knox and Greg Andrews.

SOUTHMOORE SABERCATS BOYS Tim Stogsdill 16-17 RECORD: 6-17
After finishing just 6-17 last year the Southmoore boys basketball team is looking to get back to winning ways this season but that won’t be easy playing in one of the toughest conferences in the state and playing in a loaded Class 6A division. “We are hoping to turn the corner this season and turn some heads too. We will be tested early and will find out what we are made of with two tough road games to start the season. We play two top five teams in Class 6A when we travel to Westmoore and then travel to Santa Fe,” Southmoore head coach Tim Stogsdill said. On the perimeter look for Shamar Hill (6-0, Sr.) to be the go-to weapon in the backcourt. Meanwhile on the block Cooper Stogsdill (6-5, Sr.) will be a major weapon in the frontcourt. Last season Hill averaged 7.0 points per game while Stogsdill averaged 3.0. Joining Hill at the other guard spots will be Delano Payne (5-10, Sr.) and RaeQuan Wicks (6-1, Sr.). Payne averaged 2.0 points per game last year and Wicks added in an average of 5.0 points per contest. Finally, at forward expect Jordan Lucas (6-4, Sr.) to fill out the starting lineup after he posted an average of 4.0 points per game as a
Class 6A junior. Off the bench, Southmoore will rely upon the services of Estell Laster (6-0, Jr.) at guard to be a spark plug when he gets into the game. Last season Laster averaged 3.0 points per game. GIRLS Shawn Clark 16-17 RECORD: 3-20
The Southmoore girls basketball team will be under new leadership this season as Shawn Clark takes over as head coach. Clark will also have nearly a blank slate to work with this year as only one starter returns to the team from last year. That starter will be post player Erin Bean (6-2, Jr.) who averaged 11.6 points and 8.1 rebounds last season as a sophomore. Bean is also not a player you can impose the hack-a-Shaq strategy on as one of her greatest strengths is the ability to knock down shots from the charity stripe as evidenced by her 71 percent clip from last year. Getting time at both post and guard this year will be Torie Simon (6-1, So.) and Jada Atkinson (5-10, Fr.). When Simon and Atkinson aren’t on the perimeter look for those spots to be filled by the trio of Katelyn Martin (5-5, Sr.), Jordan Pennon (5-10, So.) and Katelyn Jones
(5-9, Jr.). Guard Destinee Neloms (5-10, Sr.) will also be a player counted on to give good leadership and an experienced hand when called upon. Fellow backcourt players Presley Rumsey (5-9, Jr.), Yvonne Landeros (5-7, Jr.), Rebecca Vargas (5-8, Jr.) and Nikale Maciel (5-9, Sr.) could all challenge for minutes this year as well. Post player Morgan Ashton (6-2, So.) is a young but talented big who could add some serious length and potential off the bench in the frontcourt.

Southmoore cheer coach Adrianne Harless led the varsity cheer squad to a trip to the state competition this season competing in Class 6A, which featured teams such as Edmond North, Choctaw, Jenks, Deer Creek and others.
20
Heading into the season the Southmoore girls were coming off season in which they struggled due to injuries and other factors, but they got hot at the right time and found a path to state.
“Honestly, at the point we were when we were headed into regionals and state was simply to hit a clean routine and qualify. The years before, we have struggled with injuries and “the curse of Regionals.” We seemed to fall apart when it came time for regionals. We were focused and driven to hit that routine and to start our year off working hard, headed into Nationals’ season confident and determined,” said coach Harless. Like any team, Southmoore needed some of the girls to step up and become leaders on this squad. Coach Harless had several do just that.
“This season we have had to rely on each other. Some incredible leaders have been Teagan Reddick, Brookelyn Sanchez, our captain Avery Dossey, Ashlee Able and Britney Yarger,” said coach Harless.
The squad put out the effort to not only get past regionals and that curse, but to make it to state. The work that goes into such an effort usually
goes unnoticed. Coach Harless points to their preparation during the summer as a big reason why they were able to make it. “A lot of the preparation for state begins in the summer. These girls start practicing right after tryouts in April and go throughout the summer three days a week. They are only off about two weeks a year. As you know, football season starts right when school starts back, so these girls work tirelessly to prepare not only for football season but working on state routine,” said coach Harless. In any routine there is always room for improvement, but for Southmoore making that improvement right before taking the floor meant walking out a little on edge. But they pulled it together according to coach Harless.
“We set a goal of a clean routine and pulling together as a team at state. In the warm up room, we lost our point flyer and had to pull together to still meet our goal of a clean routine without a key flyer. We did that. I think coming together in a stressful time and still accomplishing our goals really set a tone for this team to work hard and achieve our next goal of a Nationals title in January.”
What does the future hold for Southmoore cheer? Coach Harless has big plans as they learn from the past and look forward to a bright future. “Right now, we are hard at work for Nationals in January. This team has come so far, overcome some many obstacles, but still remains focused on a goal of excellence. Every day these girls have me in awe of their love for people through
community service events like Shop with a Cop, volunteering every Friday at Briarwood Elementary, working with our special needs cheer squad, the SuperCats and simply leading students of Southmoore. This program will continue to focus on excellence and nothing short of that on and off the mat.” Ashlee Abel Avery Dossey Britney Yarger Alyssa Harper Bailey Adams Brookelyn Sanchez Brookelynn Jamison Brynn Malone Cydney Cobb Izzy Burrell Kaylen Belding Kyah Galindo Lexie Higgins Lyndee Jimboy Makayla Ford Meghan Brewer Nicole Johnson Reagan Brandt Sydney Brewer Teagan Reddick Zoi Colon Coaches: Adrianne Harless Tosha Powell Beth Wallace Miranda Noel Kylie Lindsey
BLANCHARD LIONS
Class 4A play defense. Both Bailey’s are capable of putting up double-digit numbers. Whit Carpenter, Carson Craig and Tryston Ingram are solid players that contribute on both ends of the floor. Head coach Brad Reynolds will start the new year with a trip to the Anadarko Tournament where Blanchard can expect the level of competition to pick up. In late January the Lions will go on the road to Newcastle for tournament play before conference play begins in early February.
BOYS Head Coach: Brad Reynolds Blanchard has gotten off to a nice start this season with wins over Chisholm, Cleveland and Chickasha going 3-2 in their first five games taking third place at the Cleveland tournament. Jack Kiker scored 19 against the Longhorns of Chisholm and almost broke the scoreboard against Cleveland scoring a team high 30 points. His ability to hit shots and run the floor is giving opponents fits. LJ McDonough had 17 versus Chickasha and 10 against Cleveland. The combo of Kiker and McDonough will insure the Lions put points on the board. Add McCale Bailey and Burke Bailey to that lineup and you have the makings of a team that can run the floor and
GIRLS Head Coach: Jennifer Schneeberger The Blanchard girls are off to a hot start winning the Cleveland tournament by defeating Booker T. Washington JV, Chisholm and Cushing in the finals. They also picked up a home victory against Chickasha, 92-22. Their only loss after the first five games came on the road to open the season at Kingfisher. Head coach Jennifer Schneeberger has Blanchard ranked No. 14 in Class 4A and is excited to see the develop of this squad. Players like Carly Craig and Brittney Garrett can lead this team in scoring on any given night. Callie Hacker is another player that when she has the hot hand she can account for 10 points or more a game.
Ashlan Reece is an underrated player and someone that has the ability to get big baskets and help this team on the offensive end. Addie Trent, Kenadea Jackson and Gracie Steelman are all excellent players head coach Schneeberger is excited to work into the offense this season. Also look for Karli Martin to make on impact on both ends of the floor. As the confidence level continued to increase, look for Blanchard to climb in the rankings. A stretch of tough road games in late January will test them before conference play begins and the Lady Lions look to make a run at the state tournament this year.

GUTHRIE CHARACTER ATHLETE
Character Counts Mikayla Bassett - Guthrie One of the biggest thrills for a student athlete is finding out his or her efforts have earned them a place on the team. Those are big moments knowing the hard work has paid off and the many hours sacrificed to develop the necessary skills have been worth it. This high school experience is common for many kids. However, only very few have what it takes to be the team captain. For Guthrie’s Mikayla Bassett being chosen as captain of the cheer team was extra special.
“The moment I was chosen as cheer captain at the start of my junior year is my favorite memory of high school to this point,” said Bassett, “Everyone on the team was excited for me.” For Bassett, being selected as cheer team captain was something she aspired to.

“I always admired the captains before me,” Bassett said. “Since my freshman year, I always respected their leadership qualities in hopes of maybe one day I might have a chance to lead my team.”

Any time a captain graduates from a team, finding a new team leader is not always easy. Often, if the new leaders of the team do not have a character strong enough to handle their new responsibilities, the team’s chemistry suffers. Fortunately, for Guthrie’s cheer coach, Pam JohnsonFields, the choice for her team’s next
captain was made easier because of Bassett’s character. “Mikayla puts her heart into everything she does and genuinely cares about everyone on the squad,” said JohnsonFields. “She is always willing to help. When attitudes surface within the team, she never shows that it affects her. She continues to shine bright and do what ever she can to ease the friction. She is a great leader for our team.”
Coach Johnson-Fields went on to say that because Bassett is respectful to all the members of the team and open to their concerns or suggestions, she has earned everyone’s respect in return.
Bassett agreed with her coach. “As captain, you have to be open to everyone’s ideas,” said Bassett. “Otherwise, nothing would get done.”
Bassett, now nearly halfway through her senior year at Guthrie High School, credits her time as cheer captain with giving her the confidence she needs for life after high school. “I really don’t think my high school experience would have been as wonderful or beneficial for me if I wasn’t
a cheerleader,” said Bassett. “As a 9th grader, I was more timid and scared than I am now. Being captain and leading the team has made me more confident.” In addition to leading her cheer team as captain, Bassett is also a member of the National Honor Society. She plans to continue her education at the University of Central Oklahoma after she graduates at Guthrie in May. Bassett wants to major in biomedical sciences in hopes of one day becoming a physicians assistant.
MIDWEST CITY BOMBERS BOYS Dewayne Bradley 16-17 RECORD: 23-4
After falling in the first round of the state tournament last year the Bombers looked like a team that could be dominate this season with five starters coming back. Those five starters quickly dropped to three earlier this year when the Bombers lost Keyshawn Embery right before school and Jalen Redmond was cleared to graduate in December to attend Oklahoma University early. Those departures left Midwest City head coach Dewayne Bradley with one goal. “Shock the state,” Bradley said. DJ Walter (6-5, Sr.) will be the team’s unquestioned leader this year after averaging 13.3 points per game as a junior. Walter is also a very good rebounder for a guard and pulled down 112 total boards last season. Guard, Josh Rivers (5-11, Sr.) will look to take a bigger role this season after averaging 7.7 points per game last year. Fellow senior Juwan Walker (5-9, Sr.) averaged 5.6 points per game last year but also dished out 116 total assists and had 70 total steals. Look for J.D. Ray (5-11, Jr.) and Jerome Brown (6-1, Jr.) to round out Midwest City’s starting lineup this year. Ray averaged 7.8 points per game last season while Brown missed most of last season due to injury. Christian Cook (6-1, So.) will likely be a major
Class 6A
piece off the bench this season as will Jacobi Johnson (6-4, So.). Also part of the Midwest City roster will be guards Makale Smith (5-10, Fr.), Marquis Smith (5-10, Sr.) and L.J. Gurley (5-8, Fr.). Forwards DJ Freeman (6-3, So.) and Aaron Batdorf (6-4, Sr.) round out the Bombers lineup. GIRLS Katie Thompson 16-17 Record: 14-10
The Lady Bombers are living by one motto this season, “keep your eye on the goal and your heart on the why.” Head coach Katie Thompson is working to instill a sense of dedication to the program and your teammates. It’s working. Returning starter Reneya Hopkins (5-7, Sr.) averaged 12.8 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 2.0 blocks last season. Numbers that landed her a spot on the VYPE Top 100 list. The senior guard is the motor for the Lady Bombers. Point guard Koreea Kirksey (5-6, Jr.) brings a high basketball IQ to the floor and is the catalyst that gets the offense moving. Alexis Austin (6-0, Sr.) patrols the post where her height dominates opponents and her willingness to get inside and bang makes her one of the toughest post players in the class. McKenzie Patten (5-7, Sr.) and Kennedi
Grant (5-6, Fr.) are two guards coach Thompson will use to mix things up in the lineup. Patten is projected to be the starter. Senior forward D’Shanda Hunt (6-1) is the X-factor for the Lady Bombers this season. Inessa Pugh (6-0, So.) is a young post player, but has shown promise and is learning from the upperclassmen. Trinity Wisby (5-6, Jr.), Azzy Hicks (5-8, So.) and Blesseth Dillingham (5-2, Fr.) are all expected to contribute to the teams overall success this season. With a tough schedule ahead, the Lady Bombers will look to get off to a fast start and as the season pushes forward expect those seniors to come into their own and start contending for a spot in the tournament.

CARL ALBERT TITANS BOYS Jay Price 16-17 Record: 26-2
The Carl Albert Titans have been in championship form for several years, winning a state title in 2016 and coming close last year. Head coach Jay Price and the Titans only lost two games last year, which has this team hungry and ready to take on whatever the season may bring. “We will not have much size so we will have to rely on our athleticism and experience. We hope to stay solid throughout the season and have an opportunity to play for a state title,” said coach Price. Leading the way for the Titans are two VYPE Top 100 players in Mason Harrell (5-8, Sr.) and Trey Hopkins (6-4, Sr.). Harrell averaged 28.8 points, 4.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game last year from his guard spot, while Hopkins went for 24.2 points, 6.9 rebounds and 2.2 assists per contest. The dynamic duo has been heating up courts for years and now as seniors they look to finish on top. Jason Taylor (6-2, Sr.) has good size for a guard and can average more than 10 points a game with 2.9 rebounds and 1.3 assists. Taylor is a crucial component of the offense. Forward Jaedon Pool (6-3, Sr.) averaged 5.5 points, 5.7 rebounds and nearly one assist a game last year as a junior. Rounding out the starting five seniors is guard Trajan Lands (5-10, Sr.). All five seniors have excellent experience and play with confidence. Ramon Dickens (5-10, Jr.) may be
Class 5A the 6th man this season, but also look for Zac Worth (6-3, Jr.) and Nick Watson (6-4, Jr.) to add some size to the lineup. Tyler Cook (6-0, Sr.) and Dadrion Taylor (5-11, Jr.) will backup at guard with Chris Veales (5-10, Jr.) and sophomore Rico Windham (5-9) adding some depth to the bench. The coaching staff consists of Eddie Harrell, Cameron Couch, Jordan Price and Justin Mitchell. GIRLS Kyle Richey 16-17 Record: 14-10
The Lady Titans return one starter from last season in Kamiyah Lyons (Jr.) at guard. Lyons is a leader for coach Kyle Rickey who enters his second season as head coach. The injury bug has hit the Lady Titans early as sophomore Malaya Boyland went down in preseason with a knee injury, but coach Rickey is confident his team can find their path to another winning season. Dava Guy (Jr.) will start at forward with Lexi Stevenson (Sr.). The pair are tough players inside and have the athleticism to run the floor. Chae Morbley (Sr.) and Mikaela Turner (Sr.) are a pair of guard with tremendous potential. Also look for Amber Guy (Fr.) a newcomer at forward. Mikayla Davis (So.) and junior Kendra Arnold are expected to contribute at guard this season, while Abby McNeely (Jr.) has shown she can be counted on for quality minutes this season. Other players to watch include Piaja Johnson (So.) at guard, Savannah Laskey (So.) and Amyah Stevenson
(So.). Turnover on the coaching staff has resulted in the additions of Bo Anderson and Robert Banks with Kim Hagerdon.

CHOCTAW YELLOWJACKETS Head coach Brian Beale returns three starters from last season giving Choctaw some experience on the floor, but what most people are excited about is the return of VYPE Top 100 selectee Brock Schreiner (6-0, Sr.). The shooting guard averaged 18.5 points with 3.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.7 steals per game. His production can spur on the offense and create shots for his teammates. Cole Cornsilk (6-0, Sr.) is one of those players looking to benefit from opposing teams double teaming Schreiner. Cornsilk averaged 6.6 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.6 steals as a junior. Trey Black (6-0, Sr.) gets the nod at guard where he averaged 6.6 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.9 assists a game. Austin Daugherty (6-4, Sr.) may be the answer for the Yellowjackets in the paint. The forward accounted for 5.8 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.2 assists, while fellow forward Steven Ponds (6-3, Sr.) averaged 2.9 points and 2.0 rebounds. Dakota Armstrong (6-8, Sr.) will play center after seeing limited action a year ago. Other players to watch include Dempsey Alm (6-

The senior averaged 13.1 points and 4.3 rebounds last season and is the go-to player for head coach Ryan Maloney. “We are excited about what we are bringing back and the experience we have to compete and try to repeat,” said coach Maloney. Last year’s state title was the third in school history (’45, ’75, ’17) and if Choctaw is going to repeat, they will need other players to step up and have a big impact this season. By John Tranchina For Jackson Dyer, there is no rest for the weary.
After finishing up the football season when his 8-3 Westmoore Jaguars squad lost in the Class 6A-I state quarterfinals to Owasso on Nov. 10, Dyer had to quickly shift gears and get into basketball mode in time for the season opener on Nov. 28.
as the Jaguars went 21-6 before falling in the Class 6A state quarterfinals, believes his team is primed for another big season.
The senior forward, who stands at 6-foot-9 and 220 pounds, has assumed more of a leadership role this season and it’s one he enjoys.
“I think we have a chance to be a really good team,” Dyer said. “We lost a couple of guys that were seniors last year, that were a big part of our team, but I feel like we have some younger guys that are going to need to step up because their roles have changed on the team. And I feel like if they can do that, we have a chance of being really, really good, because our starters will be good.
Dyer, who averaged 8.1 points per game last year
And as good as he is athletically, Dyer also acknowledges that his first commitment has to
“I feel like I’m a big leader on the team,” Dyer said. “I feel like lots of the younger guys, mainly younger post guys, look up to me, because I’ve been on varsity for four years, so I feel like I can teach them and lead by example.”
“I feel like to be a really good team, you need to have good guys coming off the bench, too, that can pick up the slack, so there’s no drop-off when our starters aren’t in the game.”
always be to his schoolwork.
“It’s very important,” said Dyer, who plays tight end in football. “You never know, an injury can make it to where you can’t play sports any more, so you have to make sure you have good grades to get into a good college. And someday, for everyone, basketball will be over, and I feel like you’ve got to have good grades in order to get a good job and provide for a family.”
YUKON MILLERS BOYS Kevin Ritter 16-17 Record: N/A
Class 6A
Entering his first season as head coach, Kevin Ritter is focused the little things. “We are not a young team, however we are a new team to varsity basketball. We have one returning starter and one role player from last season. The rest of our team will be playing their first season as a fulltime varsity player. We are excited to start playing and see how we will perform against other teams this season. We need to do the little things right and shoot the ball well to have success this season,” said coach Ritter. Leading the way on offense is guard Karsten Berg (6-2, Sr.). Berg averaged 7.0 points and 2.0 rebounds a game last year shooting 32 percent from the 3-point line. Carson Price (6-2, Jr.) accounted for 3.8 points and 1.1 rebounds a game last year and is looking for more this season. Price joins Berg at guard with Michael Clanton (5-9, Sr.) and Jacob Moore (6-0, Sr.). Carvell McKinley (6-4, Sr.) will start at forward giving the Millers an inside
presence. Austin Olea (5-11, Sr.) and Tyler Dechant (6-3, Jr.) are two players that figure into the scheme coming off the bench. Both guys can be productive players this season. Brendan Laidley (6-5, Jr.) and Joe Feemster (6-2, Sr.) add some depth to the bench, but more importantly they give coach Ritter the option of putting more size on the floor when necessary. Also look for sophomore Carson LAmbakis (5-9) and freshman Sanford Arnett (5-9). Coach Ritter added two new assistant coaches in Ty Sullivan and D’Anthony Perkins who join Justin Raper and Tyrell Sullivan. GIRLS Roy Wyckoff 16-17 Record: 11-13
Head coach Roy Wyckoff enters his first season and inherits a talented team that is buying into a new scheme and could be one of the surprise teams of the season. “The girls have bought into a new system. They have done everything that has been asked of them so far, and we can’t wait to
see how we match up against the rest of Class 6A,” said coach Wyckoff. Leading scorer Ashlyn Basler (5-6, Sr.) is back after averaging 11.7 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game. She’s joined in the backcourt by Kiara Brown (5-5, Sr.) who brings athleticism to the position. Senior McKenzie Brown (54) saw limited time last season, but is projected to be one of the starters this season. Freshman Sydney Brown (5-6) is an exciting player with tremendous potential, while senior Rebecka Cammon (5-7, Sr.) will be one of the go-to players on offense after averaging 11.4 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.8 assists a game. Meya Case (5-5, Fr.) and Natalie Laidley (5-7, Jr.) are two players expected to see significant playing time at guard. Senior Julianne Martin (5-6) can shoot averaging 6.7 points and 3.2 assists last season. Other players to watch include Sunny Middleton (6-0, Jr.) at forward, Kristen Readel (5-10, So.) at guard, Maycie Reed (5-7, Jr.) at guard and Jaylee Watson (5-6, So.) at guard. The coaching staff consists of Mitch Greiner, Kwantu Cammon, and Chaz Davis.

In his first season as head coach of Mustang, Tondrell Durham has been most impressed with his players attitude towards a new system and their focus in the classroom. “Each guy displays leadership on and off the court. These guys are A/B students in the classroom. With coaching changes they remained positive and continued to compete at a high level, said coach Durham. Phillip Baker (6-5, Sr.) averaged 10 points and 8.0 rebounds a game last year. Baker will start in the post for coach Durham with Zalek Sharp (6-3, Sr.) the other leading scorer on the team, starting at guard. Sharp averaged 13 points with 4.0 rebounds last year. Senior Jeffery Tanner Krausse (5-10) joins Kyle Coquillette (6-0, Sr.) in the backcourt giving Mustang two athletic guards with excellent vision on the floor. DeShawn Franklin (6-0, Sr.) accounted for three points and a rebound in limited action last year. Several players will have an opportunity to be difference makers this season. Terrance Thompson (5-7, Sr.), Landon Bolp (6-1, Jr.) and Logan Rutledge (6-0, Sr.) will push the starters for PT creating a deep bench and players coach

Class 6A Durham can trust to put in the game. Other players to watch include James Warren (5-7, Jr.), Dawson Tibaback (6-0, Sr.) and Curtis Josey (6-4, Jr.). The tough 6A schedule will grind most teams down, but look for Mustang to compete every time they step on the court. GIRLS Kevin Korstjens 16-17 Record: 17-10
Graduation may have taken a couple of starters out of the lineup for head coach Kevin Korsjens, but it did not touch VYPE Top 100 selectee CurTiera Haywood (6-1, Jr.). Haywood averaged 10.5 points and 7.0 rebounds a game last season as a sophomore. Haywood is athletic enough to play forward or guard giving coach Korstjens a lot of options on the offensive end of the floor. Mia Brown (5-7, Sr.) averaged 8.5 points and 3.0 rebounds with 3.3 assists while running the point. Another guard to watch is Ellise Foreman (5-7, Jr.) who averaged 7.7 points and 4.0 rebounds a game in her sophomore campaign. Amber Metzinger (5-10, Sr.) is another combo type
player with the ability to get to the rim and score inside. Also look for Jaycee Freshour (6-0, So.) to make an impact in the paint this season. Kyra Misurala (6-2, So.) is an underclassmen the coaching staff is excited to see develop into that dominating player in the paint. Other players to watch include Lyndsie Reed (6-0, So.), Krislyn Cobb (5-7, Jr.), Caitlyn Phillips (6-1, Sr.), Kinley Purcell (5-4, Sr.), Karis Clark (5-7, Sr.) and Reyna Cervantes (5-7, Sr.).
