1-on-1: Getting to Know Wade Wallace

The head coach for the Harding Charter Prep boys basketball team has his program on the rise and is someone to get familiar with.

Wade Wallace and family VYPE: You guys had an impressive 17-9 season last year but this year has been even better with you guys going 21-3 through 24 games. Did you have a feeling coming into this season that you guys would be this good? Wallace: After dominating over the summer I had a feeling it was going to be a special year. This group of kids have broken just about every record Harding has ever had in

basketball.

VYPE: Despite your great start a lot of people still aren't talking about you guys as a top contender for a 4A gold ball. Do you guys feel like people are sleeping on you? And do you use that as a source of motivation? Wallace: I’m not sure if I feel like they’re sleeping on us as much as I feel like we’re not a traditional

powerhouse so they probably don’t know who we are. I mean there’s people out there that still don’t even know we’re a high school they still think we’re a middle school. We’ve always been a decent program but this is the first year we’ve been able to put together a run like this so honestly not sure we deserve that kind of respect…. yet. As for motivation we try not to worry about what everyone else thinks of

us, and try to make it more about us and how can we make ourselves better, but I’d be lying if I said the boys didn’t pay attention to it.

VYPE: What or who influenced you to get into coaching? Wallace: Man that’s a difficult question, first and foremost I would have to say I’ve always felt like this is what the Lord wanted me to do with my life. Secondly would have to be my grandfather who used to always tell me “that if you love what you do you’ll never work a day in your life.” I took that to heart because besides my family basketball has always been my love so I figured if what grandpa said was true why not be a Coach, and I can tell you I haven’t worked in over 11yrs. The third would have to be coaches I’ve had growing up, I think they all left lasting impressions on me one way or another but my college coach Kelley Archer would probably be the coach that gave me the most. Good or bad I always knew he’d be there for me and still is to this day.

be honest. We have a style of play that I want to use but I mold it to fit the kids I have. For instance if we might have to adjust our dribble drive from a 4 out 1 in set to a 3 out 2 in set or instead of running a 2-2-1 zone press, we might have to run a match up press. We try to be a running up-tempo pressing style of team no matter what but we adjust to the strengths of our team. VYPE: If you could give one piece of advice to younger players that haven't reached the high school level yet what would it be? Wallace: Nothing in life is given to you, if you want it bad enough you have to be willing to work for it.

Hard work is the great equalizer.

VYPE: What is the best thing about coaching at Harding Charter Prep? Wallace: The people that I work for and with. I’ve never been around a better group of people.

VYPE: Anything else you would like to add coach? Wallace: I’d just like to thank my wife and family for all their support. No matter how good or how bad my teams have been they’ve always been there and supported me. Without their support I don’t know if I could do this.

VYPE: Is their one coach or coaches that you try to take some ideas from whenever you can?

Wallace: I love Vance Walberg, Shaka Smart, and Coach K so you see a lot of their styles in my team we love to get up and down run dribble drive, but also have a strong base in fundamentals. But being in this for a while I know I’ve met some really great high school coaches that I can bounce ideas off of which has been extremely helpful. VYPE: Every coach is different when it comes to this, but do you try to tailor your stuff for your personnel or do you have a pretty set system of offenses and defenses that you guys run? Wallace: I try to mix and match to FEBRUARY 2015

Edmond Santa Fe Golf Are the Wolves ready to shake up Oklahoma high school golf?

The last time someone other than Edmond North or Jenks won a boys state title in golf it was the 20th Century, Barry Switzer was stepping down as the Dallas Cowboys head coach, AOL was charging $21.95 to use the internet and Mark O’Meara won the 62nd Masters Championship shooting a 279 for the tournament. The seniors on the Edmond Santa Fe boy’s golf team were two years old.

The run that Edmond North has enjoyed since 2005 is nothing short of spectacular. Which would mean the team that ends that streak would accomplish nothing short of something spectacular as well. That team could be Edmond Santa Fe.

Before we crown Santa Fe as champions, there are a few things that need to happen for the Wolves. Head coach Mike Stolz points to his seniors as the guys that can lead this team.

Brett Hagan is a four-year starter and a three-time AllConference golfer, while fellow senior Logan Smoak is a two-year starter and an All-Conference selectee last year. Both golfers have signed with Southern Nazarene University. Garrett Silflies averaged 80.7 as a junior and is expected to have a great year.

“Silfies is another senior we expect to have a great year and another senior, Spencer Quinn, moved in from Texas last year. Quinn has lowered his stroke average nine strokes already and could make the varsity team,” said coach Stolz. Junior Noah Tillman shot even par at the conference tournament last year, while Jackson Baker could be a top 10 golfer with a stroke average around 80.

Brandon Stephenson is one of the younger golfers coach Stolz is excited to get on the course this season. Stephenson’s stroke average as a freshman was 80.7 and has already shot under par in qualifying. Coach Stolz believes Stephenson is a Division I prospect.

Then come the two freshmen, Jacob Adamson and Blake Mittasch. Both have a chance to make the varsity team as freshmen. Maturity and focus could be determining factors for them both. 12

Cross-town rivals Edmond North are the early season favorites. Tyson Reeder is headed to Oklahoma State after this year and sophomore Austin Eckroat who won Class 6A in 2014 and has also committed to Oklahoma State. New to the starting five for North is Rhett Bechtel who will join Hagan and Smoak at SNU next year. Laken Hinton left Santa Fe for North and is expected to start for North this year. North head coach Jeff Doherty is still looking for his fifth man.

And don’t forget Jenks led by University of Tulsa signee Preston Crawford.

The mountain that is North golf can be conquered. Is Santa Fe that team? Only time will tell. But what we do know; the Wolves are ready to pack up and start that climb to the top.

Southmoore Golf How long have you been involved with FCA? I became a member of the FCA when I was in the 7th grade at Brink Jr. High. I joined FCA at SHS in the 9th grade and became a FCA Leader my junior year.

Who influenced you to join? My participation is due to my growing up in Southern Hills Baptist Church – Myself and my family has been a member of this church since I was nine years old. I have also followed the example of my sister that was a FCA member though out her high school days. How has FCA made an impact in your life on and off the field? When playing golf, I have a towel with a bible verse from Isaiah 40:31 on my golf bag to remind me to ALWAYS put God first. It is a constant reminder that with God’s strength I can do anything. Being a member of FCA, in the past and in the future, always reminds me to be considerate of others and their needs, to be humble, and to always be a good Christian example with my actions.

How have your beliefs helped you as an athlete? I know that God will always take care of me thru my ups and downs on the course and in my personal life. I set some personal goals/dreams for myself when I was in the 7th grade. I truly believe that God’s help and my hard work are the reasons that I will have the opportunity to pursue one of my life goals. This fall I will be attending the University of Louisiana at Monroe to continue my education and be a member of the Warhawk Golf Team. I couldn’t have done this without God’s leadership along the way. What is your favorite Bible verse and why? My favorite Bible verse is Isaiah 40:31 – “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” This Bible verse speaks to me daily and drives me to never give up on my goals in life – With the Lord’s strength I can do anything.

Southmoore Girls: Chasing the Gold Ball earning an overtime win against Edmond Santa Fe, who finished as the number two girls team in Class 6A last season. For Kannady-Sayes, her most exciting moment wasn’t about tournament wins or beating top ranked teams.

Southmoore girls basketball coach Britney Kannady-Sayes returned four starters to an already talented team. These returning starters add depth to Kannady-Sayes’ team. Her top three players, who are poised to lead this team to great heights, are Serithia Hawkins, Kyeria Hannah and Alyssa Jones. These girls have led the Southmoore girls to plenty of exciting moments so far this season. Some of the moments include winning the John Nobles Tournament and

“The moment I have been proudest of this team,” Kannady-Sayes said. “In a game where we were up 20 points and a starter flies out of bounds to save a ball for a teammate that doesn’t get to play as much. That’s great teamwork.” Entering the season, Kannady-Sayes and her team had high expectations. On the surface, their goals included improving teammate chemistry and winning tournaments. Deep down, however,

the main goal was to win the state championship.

“This group has always set very high expectations for themselves,” KannadySayes said. “Including the usual: be the best they can be, good teamwork, winning tournaments & conference, etc. But their expectation and goal has always been to win a gold ball.”

With the playoffs quickly approaching, that goal could soon become a reality. KannadySayes will have her team ready to make a run at the gold ball. She knows that her players are excited. They are ready to begin the quest for the ultimate goal.

“The expectation of the gold ball hasn’t changed,” Kannady-Sayes said. “It’s always been the ultimate goal for these kids. As we get closer to the postseason, they are just getting hungrier and hungrier to achieve that goal.”

Dillon Endecott There is plenty of anticipation on the Oklahoma Christian campus this spring as the baseball and softball teams begin what could be championship-caliber seasons.

The Eagles, coming off a 38-17-1 campaign during which they set a program record for wins in a season, have caught the attention of folks in the NCAA Division II’s rugged South Central Region. Coach Lonny Cobble’s baseball team enters the season at No. 10 in the regional rankings and fourth in the Heartland Conference preseason poll. Three OC players have earned preseason recognition from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. Senior pitcher Dillon Endecott of McLoud, a Division II All-America honorable mention pick after recording a schoolrecord 13 saves last season, and senior outfielder Jordan Lopez of Edmond both were on the NCBWA’s preseason All-South Central Region second-team list. Newcomer Hunter Raley, the NJCAA Division II World Series most valuable player in 2013 for

Murray State College, has transferred in from Texas Tech and received honorable mention on the NCBWA’s preseason all-region squad. The 6-foot-5 left-hander figures to hold down a prominent spot in the Eagles’ pitching rotation.

OC also should have one of the region’s top catchers in senior Caden Cleveland of Oklahoma City, a second-team AllHeartland Conference pick in 2014. OC’s softball team also is coming off a record-setting campaign. The Lady Eagles went 42-16 and finished as the National Christian College Athletic Association runner-up. They were third in the preseason Heartland Conference poll and will host the two teams picked ahead of them in league series. The Lady Eagles will be led by righthander Shea Coats of Tuttle, who went 24-4 with six saves and a 1.80 ERA as a freshman last season. Coats is one of only seven sophomores on the 50-woman watch list for the National Fastpitch Coaches Association’s Division II player of the year award and

she opened the season with her first career no-hitter in an 8-0 win over Mid-America Christian. OC’s pitching staff is deep, with freshman Madison Nordyke (Edmond North) sophomore Haley Squier (Edmond Memorial) and senior Taylor Mosher joining with Coats to give the Lady Eagles significant firepower in the circle.

The Lady Eagles’ top three returning hitters are senior shortstop Kendra Pierce (Westmoore), who hit. 364 with seven home runs and 39 RBIs last season; sophomore catcher-outfielder Niki Davidson (Community Christian), who hit .371 with three home runs and 34 RBIs; and senior utility player Courtney Starr, who hit .368 with six home runs and 35 RBIs.

Canadian Valley Tech Athlete of the Month Boo Lewallen - Yukon High School

Aircraft Mechanics have great benefits

Boo Lewallen is a senior at Yukon High School where he wrestles for the Millers. This season Lewallen has a record of 34 wins and one loss. Head coach Joe Schneider said wrestlers like Lewallen don’t come around very often.

“Boo is a very determined athlete; he is a man on a mission. It is great for our team to have a guy like Boo in the room training as hard as he does everyday."

That training and determination has given Lewallen a career record of 133-9 over his four years at Yukon. During that period Lewallen has won two state championships and is a three-time state finalist. Lewallen also won the prestigious Perry Tournament and placed third at the Reno tournament. This season Lewallen will look for his third state title to become Yukon’s most decorated and successful wrestler of all-time.

In February Lewallen signed his letter of intent to wrestler in college for Oklahoma State University. For his commitment to being the best on the mat and his dedication to his team and school, Boo Lewallen is the Canadian Valley Tech Athlete of the Month.

The Midwest City girls basketball team is set to make another push for a gold ball. Through their first 20 games of the season the Midwest City girls compiled a record of 16-4 and climbed to the No. 6 ranking in Class 6A in mid February. That record has once again set Midwest City up for a deep postseason run as the Lady Bombers seek their first gold ball since 2010.

FEBRUARY 2015

The Lady Bombers have been led this year by their terrific trio of juniors; Asia Davis, Chinna Fair and Brooklyn Reeves. Davis is the team’s top scorer averaging 15.8 points per game while Fair averages 9.0 points per contest and Reeves has chipped in an average of 8.1 points per game. All three however also do more than just score. Davis for instance averages 2.8 steals,

2.6 assists and 3.4 rebounds per game. Fair meanwhile is also a stat sheet stuffer averaging 2.9 steals, 3.7 assists and 4.1 rebounds. Not to be outdone Reeves averaged 1.1 steals, 2.3 assists and 1.3 rebounds through her team’s first 20 games this season.

When the postseason rolls around the Lady Bombers will begin their journey to the gold ball with a regional that they will host. Other teams in their regional will include Ponca City, Owasso and Stillwater. Midwest City is slated to begin postseason play with a game against Ponca and if they can win that will then meet the winner of the Owasso-Stillwater game in the regional finals.

The Titans are ranked No. 1 in Class 5A and hoping to bring home a state title come March. 19-2 and ranked at the top of your class is a good place to be in mid February. That’s exactly where the Carl Albert Titans found themselves but head coach Jay Price knows it will still take hard work for his team to reach their ultimate goal of a state title.

Trey Hopkins

“We have an interesting mixture of upper classmen and some new freshman that do the bulk of the playing. Early in the season we were unsure how the players would mesh together but overall they have done a great job and I feel like we have a shot at the state tournament and hopefully a shot at the state title. If we can play consistent throughout the playoffs, I feel like we have a chance to make it to the last Saturday,” Price said. Throughout the season the Titans have

gotten big contributions from several players, chief among them Abilene Christian commit Hayden Howell. The senior big man has averaged 17.6 points and 11 rebounds per game this year making him one of the most feared post players in the state. Fellow forward Trey Hopkins has also been a key cog in the Carl Albert attack this year averaging 11.1 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. Finally, Mason Harrell has given the Titans a major scoring threat from the outside averaging 12.9 points per game along with his average of 3.1 assists per game.

While there are some tough teams that the Titans will need to knock off to win their first gold ball since 2007, one thing is for sure they have the firepower and team chemistry to do it.
