Southmoore Takes Softball Title in Dominant Fashion Moore schools are not strangers to hoisting the champions’ trophy in slow-pitch softball. Westmoore has five titles to their credit and Moore has two of their own, but Southmoore’s only title came in 2014, until this spring when they dominated Muskogee, 15-4 to win their second slow-pitch softball title. The top ranked team in Class

6A, the Sabercats used their offensive prowess to pull away from the Lady Roughers and never look back. Lindsey Stoeckel and Trenity Edwards hit back-to-back homeruns in the fifth after Sabrina Childres blasted a two-run shot in the third. Stoeckel sent another one over the fence in the sixth to end the game. That two-run dinger gave the Sabercats the 15-4 run

ruled victory. Collectively the Sabercats recorded more than 30 homeruns on the season on their way to a record of 32-3 on the season. The Lady Cats rolled through Tahlequah (20-10), Tecumseh (11-4) and Muskogee (15-4) to become the 2016 Class 6A state champions.

Mustang Spring Sports Recap The spring sports season was the time to shine for many Mustang student-athletes as soccer, golf and track took center stage. Soccer For the Lady Broncos the soccer season was filled with big wins and 13 shutouts on the season. Head coach Lindsay Riggs and the Broncos lost three games in March, two to Edmond Memorial, and would not lose again until the state semifinals. The nine game winning streak gave Mustang plenty of momentum heading into the state tournament. In the opening round of the state tournament Mustang defeated Southmoore, 3-0 sending them to the semifinals to face Owasso. The Lady Broncos run would come to an end but not before the team made a statement to the rest of Class 6A that Mustang soccer was

The team placed 7th in the finals. Graydon Reid finished 9th in the pole valut, while Zac Creekmoore placed 10th in the discus. Chargers Prove State's Best on the Pitch There are times when you just know victory is yours. The Heritage Hall boy’s soccer team knew going into the Class 5A finals against Bishop McGuinness this was their game to win. And they did just that.

Irish would answer with a header from Jackson Goetzinger to bring the score to, 3-1 Chargers, but Tevin McDaniel would dash all hopes late in the match with his goal to make the score, 4-1.

It started earlier in the season when the Chargers defeated Class 4A Madill, 5-1 to open the 2016 season. That win started a 17 game winning streak that culminated in the schools third state title in boy’s soccer. The streak added to the already impressive four-year run the team has been on after winning their first title in 2013.

McLaughlin was recently named the Gatorade Oklahoma Boys Soccer Player of the Year and helped the Chargers to a No.6 national ranking in USA Today.

Against the Irish of Bishop McGuinness the Chargers did exactly what they had done for most of the season and that’s dominate the competition on both ends of the field. Senior Lamar Batista scored his first goal early on after Kian Rahmanzadeh sent in a pass that Batista was able to head into the net. The next goal for Batista came on a free kick after a handball call. The second half was much of the same as senior Garrett McLaughlin found the back of the net only :29 seconds into the new period. Chargers Claim Another Tennis Title Heritage Hall boy’s tennis has been a force in Oklahoma for several years. 2016 was no different as the Chargers claimed the schools 18th boy’s team title. Winning three titles in a row is difficult in any sport. For the Heritage Hall boy’s tennis team it meant battling some tough competition this year at the state tennis tournament held at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center. No.2 singles player Will Kaiser defeated Bishop Kelley’s Jeremy Vaughn, 6-1, 6-3. The win gave a tremendous boost to the hopes of Heritage Hall fans as the numbers for the team title were getting tight between Cascia Hall, Bishop Kelley and of course Heritage Hall.

and Tony Lai who plowed their way through the bracket to make the finals where they faced a formidable team from Cascia Hall in Alec Powers and Blake Guilette. Kaiser and Lai won the first set, 2-6, but would drop the next two giving the team from Cascia Hall first place honors. The runner-up medals would go to Heritage Hall, but just as important were the team points. Heritage Hall would finish day two with 29 team points, two points ahead of second place Bishop Kelley

at 27. The win marks the schools 18th boy’s tennis title and their third in a row. The Heritage Hall girl’s team finished 5th in points with the No.2 doubles tandem of Lauren Dobson and McKenzie Carlin taking runner-up honors. Dobson and Carlin defeated the Bowers and Matthews from Duncan, 6-1, 7-5 in the semifinals.

Kaiser was the top seed in No.2 singles and made the most of his opportunity to not only secure the win and gold for himself, but to give the Chargers a lead in points. Miller Zeiders, the No.1 singles player, fought hard to make it to the finals, but ran into Mount St. Mary star Jack Wagner. Wagner was able to win the finals match, 6-1, 6-0, but making the finals also helped the Chargers in a big way. In doubles play it was Jack Kaiser JUNE 2016

Edmond North Boys Take It In OT

Jonathon Cline An overtime win in soccer is common, but two OT wins in the state tournament is certainly not normal. The Edmond North Huskies pulled off one of the more memorable tournament runs in Class 6A boy’s soccer with three one-point victories, two coming in overtime. In the quarterfinals the Huskies faced a game Mustang team that

16

matched the scoring output, 3-3 to send the game into overtime where the Huskies were able to pull out the win, 4-3. Up next in the semifinals of the Class 6A state tournament was rival Deer Creek. The Antlers had defeated Stillwater, 2-1 to face the Huskies. Deer Creek jumped out to a quick lead and goalkeeper Zach Lyday was a brick wall for the Antlers. But Daryl Dike and Jake McKinnon would find the back of the net and the Huskies would advance to face Tulsa Union in the finals. The Huskies and the Redskins played to a tie in the finals, but the overtime

period was delayed thanks to a spring thunderstorm as overtime was ready to start. The weekend long delay was no fun for the players as they had plenty of time to play the outcome over and over in their head. But once they took the field at Taft Stadium all of the nerves went away and it was time to finish what had started days ago. Both teams had chances early on, but in the eighth minute senior Jonathon Cline was able to sneak one past the Union goalkeeper to give Edmond North their third state title.

Nothing Better Than Huskies Golf The Edmond North boy’s golf team continues to set the standard for all golf programs to follow in Oklahoma.

Girls: 1997, 98, 99, 00, 01, 02, 03

The Class 6A boy’s golf tournament was held at Karsten Creek in Stillwater this year, a course that Edmond North golfers are familiar with having won their in the past. But this season was different. Entering the state tournament the Huskies were not the defending champions. Something some of the team members had never experienced. In fact some were only in the first grade the last time North hadn’t won a title.

Five golfers from the boy’s team would insure a new streak was started this year as they blistered the course with all five finishing in the top 25 with Laken Hinton crowned tournament champion.

As a program the Edmond North golfers since 1994 were denied a trophy only twice, 2004 and 2015. That’s over 20 years of dominance. Boys: 1994, 95, 96, 05, 06, 07, 08, 09, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16

Hinton would shoot a tournament low 219 for his three rounds, five strokes better than second place. Teammate Austin Eckroat tied for second with a total of 224,

while Blake Blaser was just out of the top ten at 12th. Connor Wilson finished 24th and Colter Baca was 25th. When the Huskies return to the course in 2017 it will be as Class 6A defending champions once again.

Hasley Rasies Bar For Piedmont Golf Dustin Hasley has raised the expectations at Piedmont High School as his run at the state golf tournament ends in a threehole playoff for the state title. Piedmont golfer Dustin Hasley is no stranger to the pressures of golf. But for one of the top players in Class 5A the third hole of a playoff for a state title is still just another hole. “I was just telling myself it’s a whole new game and to just take it one shot at a time. I needed to try and put some pressure on him, but it turned out that he put the pressure on me,” said Hasley. Hasley shot a 145 on day one and a 69 on day two to tie Bishop McGuinness frontrunner David Trimble. Both golfers were the top of the class shooting a pair of 69’s to find themselves tied at the end of regulation play at the Shawnee Country Club. In the playoff both golfers birdied the first hole and shot par on the second. It wasn’t until the third hole that Trimble made a move with his second shot from the fairway placing the ball near the hole for an easy birdie putt. Hasley made a nice shot from the fairway, but the putt wasn’t as close and Trimble went on to win the tournament.

Hasley has set a new standard for Piedmont golf and with his teammates rounding out the team points, Piedmont was able to finish tied for eighth place in the team standings. Will Craig, Hunter Oden, Tyler St. John and Payton Rowland joined Hasley as the Piedmont Wildcats made this a season to remember.

think the team is going to be in good hands,” said Hasley.

“It’s nice to see the young guys taking interest in the game and actually trying to play well. I have never had that on a team until this year. I think next year is going to be a very good year for us as a team. And even after I graduate I

Piedmont Baseball Plays For The Title Class 5A baseball may be the most competitive class in the state. The Piedmont Wildcats found themselves in a dog fit where they valliantly competed. The state tournament opened with the Wildcats facing a game Skiatook team that won 21 games, seven by shutout. Head coach Aaron Burrows had the pitching to get his team to the state tournament, but the offensive output by the Wildcats proved too much for the Bulldogs to handle. Piedmont would roll to a quarterfinals win, 5-2 sending them to the semifinals to face El Reno who defeated Pryor, 2-0 in the opening round. El Reno would come into the game confident after redeeming an early season loss to Pryor, but Piedmont and the Wildcat pitching would step up to meet the challenge. Tyler Anderson pitched all eight innings including the final two outs on strike three calls. For the game Anderson recorded six strikeouts and held the Indians to four runs. Offensively the Wildcats gave Anderson plenty of help from the plate. Trevor Larson and Bryce McDermott drove in runs, while Noah Ellis blasted a three-run homerun. Chloe Black Brings Title Back To Newcastle most of the day until the last four holes. The other factor was hole #10 (my starting hole) where I hit my #4 hybrid right down the middle and followed that with an 8 iron to about 10 feet. That was the start I needed to relax and not worry about having to make up shots. It really helped me settle in since I had not hit the ball great on the range that morning. After she claimed the Class 4A state title at Lake Hefner South in Oklahoma City, VYPE editor Brad Heath caught up with Chloe Black to get her thoughts on the tournament, the course and her teammates. VYPE: ON DAY ONE OF THE STATE TOURNAMENT YOU SHOT A TOURNAMENT LOW 71. WHAT WAS THAT DAY LIKE FOR YOU AND WAS THERE A SHOT OR A HOLE THAT WHEN YOU LOOK BACK ON IT YOU REMEMBER IT BEING ONE THAT SPARKED SOMETHING FOR YOU? BLACK: It was obviously an incredible day for me. I would not really say there was one shot that really sparked everything but probably a combination of a couple of things. The first being the pairing that I had was perfect for me. I was paired with Emily Rigsby (Fort Gibson) who would eventually be runner-up. It was great that I had a competitor that pushed me on each hole. We were right there together

VYPE: WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST ADJUST YOU MADE TO YOUR APPROACH OR YOUR GAME DURING THE TOURNAMENT? BLACK: I have struggled over my poor shots throughout my golf career. Having them carry over for the next shot or even the next few holes. My dad and my swing coach had really stressed this before the tournament. It was helpful that I didn’t have many bad shots but when I did I handled it better than I have in the past. VYPE: HOW MUCH EXPERIENCE DID YOU HAVE PLAYING LAKE HEFNER SOUTH BEFORE THE TOURNAMENT? Black: I have spent quite a bit of time on the South Course over my golf career. Dating back five years to when I started tournament golf with US Kids. We would play a couple of tournaments a year at Hefner South. Then carrying over to OJGT and South Central tournaments I

have played both courses at Hefner. Preparing for state my dad and I had played 5 or 6 rounds getting ready for the tournament. VYPE: WAS THERE ONE DRIVE, CHIP OR PUTT YOU WANT TO TAKE BACK AND DO OVER? Black: Always! Over both rounds I only had one mental mistake where I would take my mulligan. It was on the par 5 hole #14. I hit my drive just right of the fairway and then I tried to hit my approach shot between two trees. If I had the opportunity I would get the ball back in the fairway and have 135 yards to the green with a good chance to make birdie or par instead of the bogey I made. VYPE: AS A TEAM NEWCASTLE FINISHED 5TH IN THE STANDINGS. HOW PROUD OF LAUREN EVANS, MORGAN DUCKWALL, AND AURORA SCOTT WERE YOU AFTER THE TOURNAMENT? Black: I am tremendously proud of our team’s accomplishment. Each of them worked hard to qualify for state and to see the work we put in pay off was awesome. We have all played together since our junior high years and have really pulled for each other throughout our years together. It has been a lot of fun being a part of something Newcastle has never accomplished in the past.

Congratulations Chloe! We are proud of you!

Heritage Hall Beats All Odds Photos By Wes Sharp The Chargers had fate on their side on their way to back-to-back state titles in baseball. Heritage Hall won their first baseball title in 1999. Fifteen years later they followed that up with their second title, but none were tougher to win than number three. Before we dive into the state final game we must revisit the semifinal game against top ranked Tuttle. The No. ranked Tigers had played Heritage Hall in March winning that game, 1-0. At the time the Chargers were ranked No.3 in Class 4A. And that game was played at Tuttle. Fast-forward to May and the state semifinals with Tuttle still ranked at the top of the heap in 4A, while the Chargers had slipped to No.5. Tuttle jumped out to a quick lead turning in six scoreless innings. The lead heading

the Chargers final at-bat was, 7-1. Impossible odds for any team. But fate was on the side of the Chargers. The comeback began in the seventh inning, but it wasn’t until Blake Adams sent a high fly ball to left field near the wall causing the leftfielder to drop the catch and two runs scored for the Chargers. The walk-off fly ball would end an historic comeback for the Chargers and send them to the Class 4A state finals to face Berryhill.

bases then walked another to allow a run to score. With the tying run on third Phansalker struckout out the next two batters and got a groundout to third to end the inning. The Heart-attack Kids pulled off another great win to go backto-back in two different classes. Their title run featured wins over Oologah, 6-1, Tuttle, 8-7 and Berryhill, 2-1. Something the players and fans will not soon forget.

In the finals held at Edmond Santa Fe High School, pitchers Alex Fisher and Roman Phansalker combined to throw a great game and limited Berryhill’s opportunities on the bases. Down 2-0 the Chiefs found themselves with two base runners in the sixth inning spurring Heritage Hall head coach Breck Draper to call for Phansalker to relieve Fisher and get out of the inning. McGuinness Boys Win Golf Title, Trimble Wins In Playoff

To say the boy’s state golf tournament at the Shawnee Country Club was exciting is an understatement. The drama was something you would see on a Sunday afternoon while lazily watching a major.

David Trimble led the way for the Irish with his three round total of 214, shooting a 69 on the final day. But it would take a playoff to secure the individual title. Teammates Nick O’Donnell and Jackson Hibbard had solid rounds giving the Irish that extra push they needed to grab top honors. Ethan Dawson and Caleb Killebrew both fought hard for three rounds and added to the teams overall performance. But for Trimble the drama didn’t end in regulation. Piedmont junior Dustin Hasley went shot for shot with Trimble shooting the exact same score over the two-day tournament. On the final hole in regulation Trimble had a shot to put it away, but rolled a threeputt to send it to a playoff.

Bishop McGuinness won the team title, but Shawnee and Bishop Kelley were tied for second place. A one-hole playoff ensued and Shawnee was able to secure second place. Kelley finished third with Guymon placing fourth and Coweta wrapping up the top five.

Bishop McGuinness golf parents support the fighting Irish

Trimble and Hasley both birdied the first hole and shot par on the second. It wasn’t until the third hole that Trimble made a move with his second shot from the fairway giving him a birdie putt opportunity. Hasley made a nice shot from the fairway, but wasn’t able to match the birdie and the title belonged to Trimble.

Wolves Are Back-To-Back Champions

Shawnee has a total of 37 state championships in all sports dating back to 1932 when they won the gold ball in football. The two most recent state titles come from the baseball team. Earlier in the season the Wolves dropped two games in a row to Piedmont, one at home and one on the road. But in the finals of the Class 5A state championship the Wolves would get their revenge in a big way. Head coach Todd Boyer had led Shawnee to a 27-7 record heading into tournament play, but the Wolves had faced a tough regular season schedule and the

team was ready to close the deal on their second straight title.

In the quarterfinals the Tahlequah Tigers were no match for the pitching of Shawnee. The production at the plate generated 10 runs and the Wolves would cruise to win, 10-1 setting up their semifinal game with Bishop Kelley. The Comets were certainly game, but in the end Shawnee outlasted and outplayed Kelley to get in win in extra innings. The 8-5 victory was exactly what the Wolves needed to carry a ton of momentum into the finals against a Piedmont Wildcat team that seemed to have their number.

Pitcher Eli Davis believed he could carry the weight of the pitching duties even though he had thrown nearly 100 pitches on Thursday. The Kansas commit would not be denied as he led the Wolves from the mound with one of his best outings of the season. He struck out eight batters, only walking one. He also went 3-for-5 from the plate driving in two runs. The 9-0 win gave the Wolves their second title in as many years and a record of 30-7 on the season. Coach Boyer returns several key players next year making the Shawnee Wolves a team to watch in 2017.

Student Spotlight of the Month Potawatomi

Trae Trousdale Tecumseh High School

Tecumseh High School junior Trae Trousdale is an impressive young man in many ways. From serving on the superintendent’s student advisory council to playing a big role in his families life, Trousdale rarely has a moment when he’s not involved in something to make life better for everyone around him. Recently Trousdale was honored, as well as other students on the council, by State Superintendent of Public Education Joy Hofmeister for his efforts to find resolutions classrooms face today due to budget cuts. Trousdale told the Citizen Potawatomi Nation Public Information Office in a recent

article that, “During this past semester, I was approached by my guidance counselor and encouraged to apply for State Superintendent Hofmeister’s Student Advisory Council. I didn’t think too much about it, but submitted my application to Mr. Tom Wilsie, the Tecumseh Public Schools Superintendent. A few weeks later, I received an email, and was informed that I had been selected!” Trousdale plans to attend college after graduation, but has yet to make a decision on

where he will go. One thing is certain, as a proud member of the Potawatomi Nation Trousdale will be a welcomed addition to whichever college campus is lucky enough to land him. For his commitment to the Potawatomi Nation and to Tecumseh High School, Trae Trousdale is the Potawatomi Nation Student Spotlight of the Month. Photo Courtesy of www. potawatomi.org

OC’s men’s golf team led the way, leading after the first two rounds and finishing second at the Division II West-South Central Super Regional, qualifying the Eagles for the Division II Championship at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club in Denver. OC senior Sam Johnston won the Super Regional individual title and placed 20th at the national tournament. The Eagles cleaned up on postseason awards, with Johnston named as the Heartland Conference player of the year for the second straight year. Huslig qualified for the Division II Outdoor Championships in the 400-meter hurdles and earned All-Region honors, as did junior Austin Wallace in the decathlon.

OC’s baseball team finished 30-22 and reached the championship round of the Heartland Conference tournament after a third-place regular-season finish in the rugged league. The Eagles took regularseason series from league champ St. Edward’s (Texas) and runner-up Lubbock Christian (Texas), but were denied a spot in the South Central Region tournament despite a stellar 9-6 record against teams that did make the six-team regional field. The Eagles had seven All-Heartland picks. Standout center fielder Derek Jones was OC’s lone first-team pick, while outfielders Robert Rosser and Kyle Lacy, pitchers Brennan Walker and Jake Moore, first baseman Jake Baxter and third base-

Landon Huslig man Ben McKenzie all were second-team selections. McKenzie went on to receive All-South Central Region second-team honors.

A young OC softball team finished third in the Heartland and qualified for the league tournament in its first season of eligibility to do so. Junior outfielder Haley Squier, sophomore second baseman Sheridan Bond, freshman pitcher Madison Hagood and junior catcher Niki Davidson received All-Heartland honors.

Callie and Brenna Busby

Washington Sisters On Their Way Callie and Brenna Busby are seniors at Washington High School where they play varsity softball for head coach Jace Brewer. The pair have accomplished some amazing things on the diamond including winning five state championships. So when peers call them the Wonder Twins, you have to take notice and because we're all superhero fans at VYPE, we somehow caught up with the pair to pick their brains about playing softball, winning five titles and moving on together to Cameron University. VYPE: I recently heard someone call you two the wonder twins. What do you think about when someone calls you that? Callie: Wow! How cool! I hope we live up to that! I think that being a twin has been an advantage, we always had someone to play ball with! Brenna: Really? I've never heard that, but it sounds pretty cool. Was it one of my parents? VYPE: What jersey number do you wear and is there a reason you picked it? Callie: No.12, They didn't have a #45 which was number in little league. Brenna: No.16, that's the jersey that was hanging in my locker first day of freshman year. VYPE: What has it been like to win all of these titles while at Washington High School? Callie: It is really unbelievable, I would never have imagined we would win 5 state championships with our best friends. Brenna: Truly amazing. I couldn't have asked for better teammates. These girls are family. VYPE: What positions do you play? Callie: Catcher and right field. Brenna: Second base and shortstop. VYPE: Do you two have a routine or something you do before a game? Callie: My pre game routine usually involves making fun of Bethany, putting on eye-black, and handshakes with Brenna after playing catch. I've had the same catch partner since we were five. Brenna: Before game time I eat a snack, get dressed, and after catch do handshakes with Callie. Then I hunt down Coach Labeth for a piece of bubble gum. VYPE: Most memorable moment on the field you've had with your sister? Callie: Winning state, each time is a different feeling. You just can't beat being at the bottom of the dog pile. Brenna: Nothing beats winning state, but a close second would be getting outs on throw

downs from Callie. VYPE: Is there a third Busby? Callie & Brenna: Yes, big brother Ki. VYPE: You guys have signed with Cameron University. What are you looking forward to the most about college? Callie: Living with Bethany, Brenna, and Emily and being able to play the game I love for four more years. Brenna: Living in the dorms, hopefully Callie will make me food everyday, and getting to play softball at the next level. VYPE: One thing you are taking with you from home to Cameron? Callie: My fish, Carl. Brenna: My astronaut sloth pillowcase. VYPE: Who will handle the laundry duties in college? Callie: We've been doing our own laundry since second grade, but you should see Brenna's it looks like a mountain! Brenna: Oh this is an easy question, Callie. VYPE: Is there something you love to eat that your sister doesn't? If so what? Callie: Seafood. Brenna won't even eat fish sticks, I could eat it every week. Brenna: No! Callie will eat anything. VYPE: Have you decided on a major? Callie: Dermatologist. Brenna: I haven't decided yet. I'm interested in weather or something in the medical field. VYPE: Do you enjoy having classes together or is it best if you take different classes? Callie: We were always in different classes growing up so we weren't really together until high school. We're both pretty good about homework, but it's nice to have someone to work on the assignments with.

Brenna: It doesn't bother me either way, but it is nice to have a study buddy that lives with you. VYPE: On a road trip, who prefers to drive? Callie: Me, Brenna really doesn't even need her license. Brenna: Callie. I like being chauffeured and having control of the aux cord. VYPE: One thing the public either doesn't know about you two or something they always get wrong? Callie: We each only have one dimple both on our left cheek. Brenna always wants to wrestle, I don't know why because I always beat her. Brenna: We have no middle names. Also people assume I'm the messy twin, but I'm usually very tidy.
