Boo lewallen - Yukon Here is what the average high school sports fan knows about Boo Lewallen. Boo placed 2nd in the state finals as a freshman and won a wrestling state championship as a sophomore. Wrestling is in his DNA…his dad wrestled at UCO and has been a wrestling referee.

Here is what most people do not know about Boo Lewallen. He injured his shoulder during the regional finals as a sophomore. That is right…he wrestled his way to a state championship his sophomore year with a torn labrum in his shoulder. He knew he was hurt yet he continued to wrestle… and he WON. Boo is the kind of kid that every coach wants on a team. He is also the kind of kid that Valir physical therapist Travis Calton will tell you is the kind of kid that impacts the lives of everyone he meets. Boo is the Valir comeback athlete for March and his road to recovery led him to his 2nd state championship.

When you need us

Establishing a Higher Standard

Travis Calton was on that road to recovery with Boo every step of the way and he told VYPE that the most difficult thing for him as a physical therapist was reigning Boo in. He wanted to be back on the mat…Boo hated to sit on the sidelines. When you go down this road as a therapist and an athlete, inevitably a relationship forms. Not only has Boo impacted the lives of his team, his family, and his school, he has made a unique wrestling fan base at the Valir Physical Therapy clinic in Mustang, OK.

Congratulations on another state title, Boo and thanks for being our we’re here. Contact COMEBACK ATHLETE! the Valir

Dragons put in the hard work and can be proud of a great season The Purcell Dragons boys basketball team put together a stellar season going 16-7 in and claiming a district championship. After starting off the year 1-3 the Dragons caught fire reeling off seven wins in a row, including three straight wins at the Byng Tournament. The team’s winning streak finally ended when the Dragons lost in overtime to Class 4A No. 2 Anadarko in the Purcell

Tournament by a score of 55-50. The Dragons bounced right back after the hard-fought loss though to win seven of their next eight games including a district tournament championship win over Cache. For their fantastic effort on the court the Purcell Dragons are the Tri-City Team of the Month.

Tony Lai, Jack Kaiser and Sam Kakish.

Zeiders played No. 2 singles and won the Muskogee Tournament in the team’s first event on March 1.

With all but one starter back this year plus the addition of four freshmen; Heritage Hall tennis will field a deep team under fourth-year head coach Brian Bogert.

Topping the list of returnees is 2013 state runner-up Nick Funches at No. 1 singles. The talented junior is the only player on the roster with a set position at this point.

“He has great hands, a great all-around game,” Bogert said. “He’s our all-around singles and doubles player. ” From there, Bogert has the luxury to adapt his lineup at will.

“We can slide in any number of guys,” he said.

Among those battling for varsity time is senior Truitt Maxwell, juniors Will Kennedy,

J.T. Zerby, Brody Swan and Chris Longwell and freshmen Miller Zeiders,

“We have about four guys battling for the top six spots,” Bogert said. “It definitely keep four guys on their toes knowing the top six will play. The players are pushing each other to work hard every day. “ Bogert’s philosophy is to put together the roster that will best help the Chargers at the state tournament. “I will probably have six or seven different lineups,” Bogert said. “We’re really looking for the best six and the best combination. A lot of it is objectively based on how they play singles, how they play together. That’s our philosophy and the kids buy into it. Our kids are very flexible. They understand that is my coaching style. They understand we are going to put them in the best position for our team. It may not be the best position for each individual to win state but we are going to put our players in the best position for our team to compete for the title.” After a runner-up finish in 2013, the Chargers are hungry to get back to the mountaintop.

MARCH 2014

Even with snow on the ground March 3, Bogert’s players were texting to say when they had (indoor) court time, Bogert said during

the interview.

“They have a great work ethic,” he said. “They are hungry after just barely getting runner-up last year. They are hungry to get back to the top of the podium.” Among the schools Heritage Hall will battle for Class 5A state tournament bragging rights are returning state champ Cascia Hall, which returns everyone, Metro Christian, Oklahoma Christian and Carl Albert.

“Class 5A is really competitive,” Bogert said. “A lot of the private schools like OCS, Metro Christian, Cascia Hall, Heritage Hall all got bumped up under that new OSSAA rule. That’s how we all ended up in 5A. Carl Albert has been competitive year in and year out in 5A. They can compete with anybody in the state.”

Oklahoma Christian baseball is showing steady improvement on the diamond as the Eagles compete in their new league, the NCAA Division II Heartland Conference. The Eagles made an 18-win jump last season and are aiming even higher in 2014, as they’re already on the edge of the Division II South Central Region top 10.

The Eagles won the National Christian College Athletic Association Central Region title last season and advanced to the NCCAA World Series in Ohio, where they beat a pitcher who later was taken in the Major League Baseball draft. In 2013, OC had two players chosen in the MLB draft for the first time in school history and the Eagles have more draft prospects on their roster this season. With veteran coach Lonny Cobble at the helm, the future looks bright for the Eagles!

Rodgers' 10 Mark Rodgers gives his "Rodgers' 10" in this month's issue. Take a look at the 10 things that have caught his eye.

1

VYPE TOP 100 alumni Josh Wariboko is opening eyes all over the country. The OKC Casady offensive line prospect has surged onto the nationwide Mark Rodgers recruiting scene 98.1 WWLS drawing interest T h e S p o r ts from the likes A n i m al of Alabama and Florida State. Wariboko is committed to the University of Oklahoma and earned an invitation to the Rivals Five-Star Challenge in Baltimore this Josh Wariboko June. He was named offensive line MVP recently at the Dallas Rivals Camp Series. Wariboko wasn't the only Oklahoman to earn honors at the Rivals camps. Edmond Memorial running back Warren Wand was pegged the top running back at the Houston Rivals Camp series and Midwest City safety Will Sunderland earned MVP of the defensive backs at the Dallas camp.

2

Douglass has a shot at winning its 5th straight state championship in the class 4A bracket. The Trojans aren't the favorite but their losses are certainly understandable. Two of those setbacks came to Northeast and Millwood in the highly competitive OKC public schools conference and the other two were to Mustang

with Connors State. That duo squarely puts Norman North in the middle of the west side arms race.

If you are out and about watching sports this spring and work up an appetite stop in and see Mike Turek in Choctaw. The venerable Old Germany now has a sports bar adjoined with some of the best food you will find this side of Munich. The hospitality of the Turek family is equal to the great taste. You won't be disappointed.

7 Last Year's Champion Douglass and Booker T. Washington. Bishop McGuinness won four straight titles from 1998-2001 and a few other teams have turned the trick but a fifth consecutive title would be the first of its kind in Oklahoma history.

Millwood is the prohibitive favorite in the Class 2A boys bracket. Varryl Franklin, who took over for coach Eddie Evans in 1978, has never lost a conference game and will attempt to win his 16th state championship this year. Hard to make an argument that there has ever been a more successful high school coach than Franklin.

4

Carl Albert will be a force to reckon with on the diamond in Class 5A. Gavin LaValley and Cameron Warren both signed with the University of Oklahoma and are looking to defend their Class 5A state championship from a year ago. The Titans defeated Claremore 4-2 in the title game.

5

Norman North lost in the state championship game a year ago to mighty Owasso. Coach Brian Aylor's team has a couple of arms that are capable of pitching his team right back into the title game. Brad Kinsey is the ace of the Timberwolves staff and has signed to play at Wichita State. Austin Cranford is a very good number two starter who has signed

6

8

Speaking of Choctaw, the Yellowjackets girls basketball team has a freshman sensation. Ana Llanusa hit Midwest City for 24 points including a go ahead 3-pointer in the 4th quarter to lead her team to the state tournament. Llanusa has a long way to go before making her choice in a college. Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Duke have already showed great interest in the services for Llanusa. Arnelia Spears is in her final season as Millwood girls coach. It's her 43rd season coaching at the school and this is her 21st appearance in the state tournament. It's a number that dwarfs the rest of the field for consistency and success over the long haul. Spears has won 800 games and three state championships at the school.

9

Heritage Hall has enjoyed tons of athletic success. The Chargers are a fixture in football and tennis but success has eluded the school in basketball. The Hall qualified for state for the first time in 35 years by beating PerkinsTryon 45-44 in the area tournament at Del City.

VYPE Top 50 List

For the second year the VYPE office argued, fought and debated the best baseball players in the state. From Class B to Class 6A, hundreds of names were marked and the impossible task of getting the list down to 50 was finally completed. The 50 best baseball players in Oklahoma emerged from an amazing talent pool and now we bring it to the public. To get the list started we spotlight seven of the top 50 from the OKC area. This is the Top 50.

Caleb Eldridge – P/1B/OF Deer Creek Antlers SR. 6-3, 210 Signed with Oklahoma State Eldridge has displayed the tools that make him a great high school player and has shown why Oklahoma State is ready for him to come to Stillwater. Last season Eldridge hit .370 with 29 RBI’s. Look for those numbers to rise this season. 12

MARCH 2014

Joe Lytle – C Yukon Millers SR. 5-10, 175 Signed with Oklahoma City Lytle is a durable catcher with an outstanding arm who can step out from behind the plate and play in the infield effectively. Not only known for his defense, Lytle can drive in runs and is quick on the bases. Lytle is described by his teammates as one of the most reliable players on the team.

Quin Walbergh – RHP/SS Edmond Santa Fe Wolves SR. 5-10, 165 Signed with Oklahoma This hard charger at shortstop is headed to the University of Oklahoma this fall to play for the Sooners. Walbergh makes routine plays look easy and has improved his hitting over the offseason. The right-handed pitcher can serve it up when called upon. Expect big things from the Wolves star player.

Hunter Pinkston – INF/P Dale Pirates SR. 6-3, 215 Dale High School is known for the number of quality baseball players they field every year and 2014 is no different. Leading the way is senior Hunter Pinkston. A tough out at the plate, Pinkston sees the ball very well and forces pitchers to throw to him or give up the walk. Defensively Pinkston shows good lateral movement and a strong arm. Braden Webb – Owasso Jeb Bargfeldt – Owasso Mason O’Brien – Owasso Bryce Carter – Cascia Hall Kelby Hern – Cascia Hall Mason Stookey – Inola Nick White – Berryhill Bryce Howe – Claremore Matt Whatley – Claremore Charlie Wrona – Bishop Kelley Chris Luschen – Bishop Kelley Allen Beer – Jenks Bryce Ward – Jenks Cadon Owens – Jenks Cale Tims – Jenks

Cameron Warren – 1B/3B/P Carl Albert Titans SR. 6-2, 205 Signed with Oklahoma Cameron Warren may go to Oklahoma as a pitcher, but in high school he has shown tremendous range playing first and third. From the mound Warren has a quick move to first base and plays solid defense using his skills learned while playing the infield. Warren continues to improve his hitting skills and is eager to get back to the state tournament. Ryan Skalnik – Verdigris Bobby Cox – Booker T. Washington Luke Preaus – Metro Christian Brad Kinsey – Norman North Jon Littell – Stillwater Taylor Throne – Stillwater Jordan Boyer – Deer Creek Gavin LaValley – Carl Albert Corey Zangari – Carl Albert Nick Brown – Catoosa Josh Davis – Union Nick Roark – Broken Arrow Reid Wall – Byng Ty Hooper – Alva

Austin Cranford – P/OF Norman North Timberwolves SR. 5-10, 175 Signed with Connors State Austin Cranford has the speed to cover a lot of ground and the arm to surprise would-be base runners looking to test his range. Offensively Cranford is a line-drive hitter with excellent speed on the bases. Look for him to make a difference for the Timberwolves from the bump this season. Nick Smith – Kingfisher Chris Byndas – Dale Hunter Wilson – Spiro Carson LaRue – Dewey Bryce Deatherage – Red Oak Lane Paul – Tuttle Jacob Chappell – Guthrie Retsyn Ootton – Cordell Caleb Knight – Checotah Cade Morris – Chickasha Hunter Aguirre – Westmoore Austin Green – Binger-Oney Rylee Simon – Vian Garrett Degelos – Southmoore Austin Roberts – Mustang MARCH 2014

Deer Creek Baseball is Back Head coach Ron Moore lost eight seniors from last year’s tournament team, but returns two of the top players in Oklahoma, Caleb Eldridge and Jordan Boyer. Class 5A doesn’t appear to be any easier this year as Carl Albert, Guthrie and Claremore all return players with tournament experience. But for head coach Ron Moore and the Antlers of Deer Creek, the key to a successful season may be in the hands of Caleb Eldridge and Jordan Boyer. Eldridge has signed with Oklahoma State University, while Boyer is headed to Wichita State this fall. In 2013 Eldridge hit .370 with four homeruns and 29 RBI’s before adding the Ferguson Jenkins award to an already full trophy case. Boyer hit .380 with two homeruns and 22 RBI’s as a

shortstop. Fellow seniors Dylan Rycroft and Alex Forget bring serious power to the plate. Rycroft knocked in 38 RBI’s while hitting .422 last season with nine doubles. Forget batted .349 with 28 RBI’s. The pair give coach Moore power in a solid lineup. Rycroft is expected to play third and in the outfield with Forget playing in the outfield and seeing some time at catcher. Pitcher Patton Collie has signed with Colorado School of Mines and should be the ace for the Antlers this season. Look for Aidan Doherty behind the plate, but the junior should be in the pitching rotation. “We’re excited to get out and start working. Younger players need to mature and we need our starters to be ready to go each and every game,” coach Moore said.

Deer Creek Girls Ready to Make A Run at Second-Straight Title The Deer Creek Lady Antlers began this season with dreams of back-to-back Class 5A state titles dancing in their heads. Through a tumultuous regular season those dreams took a few bumps but kept on going as the Lady Antlers never waivered from their goal.

Holiday Tournament and a second place finish at the Lady Antlers home tournament, the Bruce Gray Invitational.

After dropping the first two games of the season to Piedmont and El Reno the Lady Antlers rallied winning 13 of their next 16 games to up their record to 13-5 overall. That winning streak also included a tournament championship at the Ardmore

Following the second place finish in their own tournament the Lady Antlers went on to win their final five regular season games heading into the regional tournament with an 18-5 overall record. In their first regional tournament game Deer Creek manhandled Durant winning by a score of 61-18. The Lady Antlers then went on to claim a regional championship with a hard-fought

Deer Creek senior Whitney Jones said that she feels like the team has showed great resolve this year in keeping their eye on the ultimate goal.

“I definitely think we started out slow but as the season has progressed we’ve really come together as a team and everything is working well and everyone is playing their positions very well,” Jones said. “Our goal has been the same all season and that’s to win state again.”

Edmond Swimmers Make

Big Splash at State

Edmond head swim coach Steve Riggs enjoyed the opportunity to unveil the sate-of-the-art swim facility that services the three Edmond schools at the Class 6A state meet last month. And while Norman North swept the 6A competition, the Edmond district was well represented. Edmond North led the Edmond girl’s teams with a runner-up finish with 320 points. Memorial was next with 178 points for fifth place and Santa Fe recorded 74 points for 11th place. In boy’s action, North finished third with 262 points followed by Memorial fourth with 222 points and fourth place. “We enjoyed it and to be able to have a meet like that at our pool was overwhelming,” Riggs said. “It was a great experience for us and something we hope to get to repeat sometime. “We had a great meet. had superior depth over everyone else in the girl’s. In the boy’s meet, they had more quality than the rest of us.” Ally Robertson captured four firstplace medals including individual medals in the 200 IM and the 100 Breaststroke. “Ally won four events last year and helped the team win state,” Riggs said. “Right off the top this year, she came from a second and a half back to win the medley relay. It’s an event we hadn’t lost in four years but we were favored. “She’s the fastest in the IM and 100 Breaststroke. The pool where her club team swam was shut down in November. So in November and December we’re swimming with over 70 kids in a six-lane pool. So she wasn’t at her absolute best but is a tough competitor. She knows how to win.” Edmond Memorial sophomore Natalie Vorel took the early lead in the 500 Free then had to rally to win at the end. “Natalie swam the 500 Freestyle and shaved five seconds off her time at regionals,” Riggs said. “After a Jenks girl passed her, Natalie retook the lead. She stuck to her game plan.” A change in strategy paid off for Garrett Duncan. After recording his best times in the prelims, Duncan would falter in the championship

round. “He did just enough to qualify then shaved before the finals,” Riggs said. “It really paid off in his times on Saturday.” Here is look at the individual and relay medal finishes: Girls 200 Medley Relay 1st - North (Alexa Acuna, Sarah Helton, Ryanne Vance, Ally Robertson) 1:50.86. 6th – Memorial (Kelsey Kersgieter, Hailey Bozeman, Natalie Vorel, Carmen Leibrock) 1:59.48. 200 Freestyle Relay 1st – North (Olivia Seefeldt, Julia Kirby, Ryanne Vance, Ally Robertson) 1:40.95. 5th – Memorial (Rachel Parrett, Katie Kersgieter, Kylie May, Morgan Carr) 1:50.91. 8th – Santa Fe (Jill Colley, Jessica Landwehr, Alexis Ly, Christen Biachi

Rumble in the Big House A new champion was crowned in Class 6A while three repeat champions were crowned in Classes 5A, 4A and 3A. Tuttle won its fifth straight in Class 4A, Collinsville captured its third consecutive while Perry won for the fourth time in the last five years in 3A and for the 39th time overall.

Cole Pacheco - Deer Creek Class 6A Class 6A crowned seven two-time state champions, four of which came from Edmond North High School. The Dixon brothers and teammate Derek White became two-time champions, which helped the Huskies to a runner up finish behind Stillwater. Broken Arrow sent nine qualifiers to state, but it was Markus Simmons (120) who came away with a state title. The win marked the second title for Simmons, the first one coming in 2012. Davion Jefferies (126), Tanner Bailey (145) and Paden Bailey (152) took home runner up finishes to help the Tigers finish third overall. Tanner Bailey was the defending state champ at 145 pounds, but lost a 5-1 decision to Stillwater’s Joe Smith. Smith joined teammates Andrew Nieman (106), Kaid Brock (132), Tristan Moran (138) and Chandler Rogers (170) as state champions. Derek White - Ed. North of Putnam City. Sand Springs sent seven wrestlers to state and four of those seven were freshmen. Daton Fix (113) was the only Sandite to win his bracket while completing a perfect 33-0 freshman season. John Jimenez (120) and Kyler Childers (220) finished second in their brackets and both return next season for head coach Kelly Smith. Muskogee qualified four wrestlers, but it was seniors Dawaylon Barnes (152) and Jacobe Smith (160) returning home as state champions. Barnes defeated P. Bailey of Broken Arrow in a close bout, 3-1. Barnes beat former state champion Austin Eades from Jenks in the semifinals, 5-2. Smith defeated Zach Walton of Edmond North, 5-2 to win the 160-pound bracket. Class 5A Collinsville made the most noise at state this year, crowning two four-time state champions.

Lance Dixon - Ed. North Gary Wayne Harding (138) and Will Steltzlen (145) became the 31st and 32nd wrestlers in the history of Oklahoma high school wrestling to win state four years in a row. Harding was an unstoppable force again this year winning by technical fall over Reece Henry of Piedmont, 15-0 then pinning Jared Woods of Durant in :38 seconds in the semifinals. In the finals Harding beat Cody Foos of Pryor, 16-0 for the technical fall win. Steltzen defeated Mitch Sellers of Tahlequah, 3-1 in the finals after pinning his semifinal opponent Francisco Lopez of Piedmont. Christian Moody (113) etched his name in the history books as well winning his second state title by defeating Montorie Bridges of Altus, 5-3. Deer Creek’s Cole Pacheco (182) added his name to the threetime winners list after taking out Blake Handley of MacArthur, Riley Williams of Chickasha and Brice Inbody of Bishop Kelley. Pacheco’s

teammate Tanner Cole (106) beat Nate Keim of Collinsville, 2-1. Other two-time state champions include Donald Cannon (126) of McAlester, Cameron Loving (160) of Altus and Josh Latham (195) of Chickasha. Blane Culp (170) of Piedmont, Cole Powers (120) of MacArthur, Clayton Lamb (132) of Deer Creek, Hestin Lamons (152) of Tahlequah, Taven Birdow (220) of Altus and Griffin Qualls (285) of Coweta all won state championships. Class 4A No real surprise that Tuttle High School stayed on top of the Class 4A mountain. The Tigers sent 10 qualifiers to state with six of those bringing home state titles. Blake Dauphin (126), Dakota Head (152) and Dustin Mason (285) won their second straight championship. Freshman Tanner Litterell pinned his first two opponents heading into the championship bout with Daniel Hood of Cushing who had also pinned his first two opponents. But Litterell proved to be too much for the senior as Litterell went on to win, 5-2. Sophomore Beau Guffey (120) rolled through his bracket beating Dustin Hayes or Vinita by major decision, 10-0. Senior Riley Fielder (220) won a 6-0 decision over Luke May of Mannford. Fielder improved his

record to 40-7 for his final year. Cub Yeager (132) of Locust Grove became a three-time state champion when he won a decision over Brik Flippo of Tuttle, 4-2. Yeager became the first three-time champion at Locust Grove. Cushing’s Gage Stallworth (160) was the second three-time champion crowned in Class 4A. Stallworth beat Seth Shelton of Tuttle, 5-2 in the finals. Sallisaw’s Jaden Davenport (195) was the last three-time champ crowned in 4A. Davenport defeated Bryce Folkerts of Glenpool by fall at 2:34. Davenport’s teammate, Cale Wilson (182) became a twotime state champ by defeating Jon Carter of Mannford with a pin win. Wyatt Sheets (138) of Stilwell was another two-timer in Class 4A. Sheets defeated Johny Cooley of Bristow, 4-2. Glenpool’s Justin McGinnes won his second title with a 4-0 win over Jake Castlebury of Elgin. Brandon Stringer (170) of Blanchard and Tanner Skidgel (106) from Cascia Hall rounded out the champions in Class 4A. Skidgel was impressive with two pins and a major decision in the finals over Josh Copeland of Harrah. The freshman finished the season 36-1. Class 3A Perry sent 12 wrestlers to state this year, but it was David Thomas (160) leaving the state meet as the lone state champion for the Maroons. Thomas won his second state title by defeating Jacob Vap of Newkirk, 6-1. Thomas improved his record to 40-4. Perry freshman Cale Betchan (106) was runner up to Kaden Gfeller of Heritage Hall. Gfeller finished his freshman year a perfect 28-0. Other Perry wrestlers with runner up finishes include Colton Looper (152) and

Garrett Beier (195). Jonce Blaylock (145) of Berryhill pinned his first two opponents before facing Cody Ryan of Chandler in the finals. Blaylock won a 3-1 decision over Ryan to complete a perfect 32-0 senior season. Tonkawa’s Owen Simpson (120) beat Cullen Patterson of Salina, 8-6 to win his second state title in as many years. Newkirk’s Briar Stopp (126) did the same when he defeated Rio Zamora of Madill, 8-2. Jared Schieber (152) joined Stopp as Newkirk champions with a 5-3 decision over Looper of Tuttle. Other state champions in Class 3A include Zach Atencio (113) of Plainview, Derick Shrum (132) of Jay, Tanner Wall (138) of Chandler, Sam Schuermann (170) and Tanner Allen (285) of Blackwell. Barnsdall 195 pounder Caleb Hawes won his second title with a 9-4 decision over Beier of Perry. But it was Braden Ruth (220) of Davis who may have stole the show after his win over Bryson McGowan of Hulbert in the finals. Ruth pinned McGowan at 1:01 to take home his third straight state title.

Lady Broncos Boast Talent-Filled Roster, Hope to Improve on Last Season’s Trip to Semifinals A year ago the Mustang Lady Broncos made it all the way to the semifinals of the state tournament before they fell to eventual state champion Bishop Kelley. Despite losing five seniors off of last year’s team the Lady Broncos still have plenty of talent and are hoping to once again make a deep run in the postseason. “We graduated five seniors but still hope to be competitive when playoff time rolls around,” said head coach Mike Mason.

Leading the charge this year will be senior forwards Lexi Jones and Sydni Wiles along with senior midfielder Anna Crawford. Jones has signed to play with Oral Roberts University in college and has a very strong and quick shot according to Mason. Wiles meanwhile boasts a deadly left foot and has already signed to play at Oklahoma Christian next year. Crawford is also a huge weapon

in the middle of the field as a very fluid midfielder who sees the field well. The senior midfielder is also a Division I signee after committing to play at Oklahoma next year. Another key player on the Lady Broncos roster this year will be Lexi Jones’ younger sister Jaci. Described by her coach as a very mobile player who controls the middle of the field, Jaci will need to make big contributions in her sophomore season this spring. Junior forward Alina Magruder will also be expected to play a big role this season utilizing her speed and shotmaking abilities to put the ball in the back of the net.

Protecting the Lady Broncos own net this season will be junior goalkeeper Brandi Hutchison. When talking about his keeper Mason described her as very athletic and also praised her ability to verbally communicate with the entire defense.

Jaci Jones The Lady Broncos will compete in a challenging district this year that contains Bishop McGuinness, Edmond Memorial and Norman North. None of those teams went as deep into the playoffs as Mustang last year however, with McGuinness and Edmond Memorial losing in the first round. Norman North meanwhile was ousted in the quarterfinals by Mustang.

The El Reno Baseball Team is excited about the tough challenges Last season the El Reno Indians finished the season with a 12-20 record playing in one of the toughest districts in Class 5A. This year the Indians are looking for improved results under new head coach, and former Oklahoma State University standout, Keanon Simon. Simon takes over the head coaching duties from former head coach Kyle Koehler.

Mason Archer

Those improvements will happen due to a total team effort according to Simon who said it was on every member of the team to step up this season. “I’m looking for everyone to step up. I have high expectations of every player on the team,” Simon said. “Everyone that is out is working hard and improving everyday and that is what you need to be successful.” While the team approach will be the dominating thought process in El Reno this year, seniors Jake Dye and Mason Archer along with junior Cal Baker are all strong athletes who made big contributions last year and have a chance to do so again this year. Simon said his goals for this season are more about how his players approach and play the game not the end result.

“My goals are just to get better and improve every day while we play the game the right way. I believe there is a certain way to play the game and I think if you do that then the other things like wins and losses will just take care of themselves,” Simon said.

Archer and Dye both spent time on the mound last year a place where Simon said that the Indians have a chance to be very solid this year. “We have some guys who will definitely go out, compete, and fill up the zone. Anytime you have guys that will do that you are going to give yourselves chances to win,” Simon said.

El Reno will need some great hurlers this season as they once again deal with a tough district schedule including powerhouse teams like Guthrie and Deer Creek again favored to battle it out for the district title. Other teams such as Piedmont and Bishop McGuinness promise to also pose their fair share of challenges. “We are just trying to practice hard every day,” Simon said. “As far as preparing them for a tough schedule we just need to stay mentally tough and be willing to learn and get better everyday.”

SaberCats Hope New Day Dawning After Tornado The deadly tornado that ravaged parts of Moore last spring affected 17 members of the Southmoore baseball team, 10 of whom lost everything. With seven returning starters the SaberCats are eager to put last year’s devastation behind them and the city of Moore. “We have had a hard and very tough year after the tornado that struck our area,” said Southmoore head coach Craig Troxell, who is in his 17th season as head coach. “We had 17 players affected by the tornado, 10 who lost everything.” Topping the list of returning starters are six players who have two years varsity starting experience. Seniors Kody Brannon, Jared Ledbetter and junior Connor Coughlan have been selected team captains for the 2014 season. As the team’s catcher, Brannon is responsible for maintaining the pitching staff. Ledbetter anchors the infield play at shortstop and Coughlan

will see double duty at pitcher and first base. Garrett Degelos, another twoyear starter, plays centerfield. Degelos has already signed with Coffeyville (Kan.) Junior College. Other returning starters include senior third baseman/ pitcher Blaze Schein and junior outfielder/pitcher Austin Davis. Weather has hampered the team’s ability to get on the field this spring. Highlighting the SaberCats schedule is a series with crosstown rival and district foe Moore. Losing your top two scorers usually means a drop off in production.

But that’s been anything but the case for Class 6A second-ranked Midwest City as it heads into the playoffs. VYPE 100 guard Torey Noel and Kesean Brown lead the offensive charge but there are other capable scorers in Cedric Fair, who has led the team in scoring on numerous nights, Caleb Corprew and Louis Parker.

“Torey has been good for us all year long, really for a couple of years,” head coach Dewayne Bradley said. “He makes a lot of explosive plays. Kesean is another one who has been a two-year starter. He’s right there close to Torey in scoring. Desean leads us in rebounds. He’s our best on-ball defender. Those two are the ones that get us going.

“My philosophy is and has always been that it is a team situation. We don’t just rely on one guy to carry us. Everybody has the green light and ability to score. (Torey and Kesean) because of the type of players they

are, they should have good nights. But we don’t go into games saying Torey or Kesean have to score 20 a night. We’ve got five guys that can score the basketball on any given night.”

The Bombers have allowed 70 or more points just twice the season, one that resulted in a 101-69 loss to OKC Storm in early January.

The team’s only other regular season loss was a 56-48 setback against Edmond Memorial in late February. “That particular game had been snowed out twice,” Bradley said. “We were playing a bunch of games around that (six in nine days). We didn’t shoot the ball very well. We missed a lot of easy opportunities and a lot of free throws. We came back the next night and won on Senior Night (vs. Southmoore).”

The team has enjoyed some of their best practices as they headed into the playoffs. “We’ need to be healthy, focused,” Bradley said. “I love this group of kids a lot. I’ve had them for four

Torey Noel years. They are very talented, very competitive. When they are focused mentally and we are intense, we’re as good as anybody. “We just have to be prepared and that’s my job. We’ve got to play four quarters and that’s something we haven’t done a lot of this year even though we’ve won a lot of games. If we put together four quarters we’ll be tough to beat.”
