Brady Myers is a senior at Sterling High School who appreciates the community atmosphere of his school. He says that is his favorite thing about Sterling HS.

“You get to interact with everyone and you know who everyone is,” he said.

Myers is an all-around athlete, playing football, basketball, baseball, and competing in track. He is also involved with DFYIT (Drug-Free Youth in Town), which is an organization dedicated to giving recognition to kids who choose to live a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. Myers may play multiple sports, but football is his favorite. Not only does he enjoy the game itself, but it is something that has been a part of his family for years. “I find my joy in tackling people,” he said. “My family has been apart of this sport for as long as I can remember. As I got thrown into it, I never had a dull moment.”

ATHLETE OF THE MONTH Someone who serves as a role model for Myers is his brother, who also played football. Myers watched him take the field and soon followed in his footsteps. “I look up to my older brother,” he said. “He was in high school before me, starting quarterback and safety. I had someone who I wanted to be like. Someone who challenged me to be better.”

Along with his older’s brother’s good example, Myers looks inward for motivation on the field. He strives to give his best so that he can be satisfied with the work he’s put in. “What motivates me is the satisfaction feeling after I get the job done,” he said. “The feeling of success.”

The relationships and memories surrounding football are the things that Myers will treasure most even after his time at Sterling High is finished. “The biggest highlight I have is the family that I have built from the game,” he said. “From teammates to coaches to teachers to other students.” After graduation Myers plans to continue playing football on a collegiate level and study radiology.

Student of the Month Mailya Paine - McPherson McPherson High School’s Mailya Paine has a wide variety of interests. She plays volleyball and softball, as well as doing weightlifting and being involved in art and band. Softball is her favorite activity especially because for Paine, it is something special to her family. “What interested me in softball was my entire family played it and I wanted to continue the tradition,” she said. As any athlete can attest, once you’ve invested so much time with your teammates, you tend to become like a family. This is one of Paine’s favorite things about playing softball.

and diving in the outfield, along with my teammates as 12 sisters I now have,” she said. “The friends I have made there that are now like family to me.” Paine also values her relationship with her coaches, who she says motivate her to do her best and encourage her along the way. “The person who inspires me in softball is my coach,” she said. “He always pushes me to do better and always gives me confidence.” Being part of a team takes trust and sometimes even overcoming personal doubts. This is a lesson that Paine has learned over the years through softball. “In softball I’ve had to overcome not being confident and had to learn how to always be confident in myself and the others on my team,” she said.

After high school, Paine’s plans include continuing her education in college and studying art therapy for students. “I want to help them overcome what they are going through with art and prove they can do anything they set their mind to,” she said.

PEDIATRIC THERAPY: W SITTING Melissa Edwards, PTA

As pediatric therapists, we often disguise therapy as playtime. We also promote playtime and educate parents on its importance. One thing we screen for while a child is playing is W sitting. W sitting is when a child sits on the floor, turning their legs out and backward. If you were looking at them from the top, their legs would be in the shape of a “W”. Most people have heard of W sitting but may not recognize what it is and the importance of correcting it. There are 3 main reasons we focus on correcting this in our patients W sitting reduces core strength: When a child is sitting in the W position, they have a wide base of support with their legs. Due to this, they require little use of their core muscles to stay upright. This can result in a weak core which can lead to long term issues such as difficulty completing fine and gross motor tasks, especially once they become school age. When sitting in other positions, the core muscles are engaged to maintain balance. Stress on Joints: When a child is in the W position, it puts unneeded stress on the knees and hips. Think about how your body would feel after sitting in that position....your hips and knees would be achy! Now think about how your body would feel if you sat like that for years. Their joints may not bother them now, but if it is not corrected it can cause future orthopedic problems in the knees and hips later in their life. VYPE KANSAS

The good news is the W sitting can easily be corrected. Knowledge is power, so now that you know what you are looking for and why it needs to be corrected, you can start at home by not letting it become a habit for your child or by using some guided correction techniques. There are three positions we recommend teaching your child. The first is “long sitting”, which means their legs are straight out in front of them. The second is legs to the side, while sitting the child bends their knees and tucks their knees to one side or the other. The last is criss cross (often referred to in school as criss cross applesauce). When you notice your child is in the W position, cue them to “fix their feet” and look for them to get in one of these positions. Consistency is key! If they are to young to respond to verbal cues then move their legs into these positions yourself and encourage play while maintaining the new position. As you begin to break the habit of W sitting, your child will need less and less cueing.

W sitting is a “fixed” or “static” position: When a child is sitting in the W position it does not allow for trunk rotation, twisting or turning to reach toys on both sides, or to reach across their body. They are fixed with what is in front of them and only use L hand for items on L side and R hand for toys on R side. This decreases developing hand preference, which is needed for handwriting and other tasks later in life. Children need to be able to engage with the environment and play in dynamic positions to allow for proper development.

It was a routine winter workout for Kaylee and the Salina South softball team. Nothing out of the ordinary happened. Just conditioning. But when Kaylee was ready to go home, she told her dad her knee hurt. By the time she got home, she could barely put weight on her left knee. Turned out, Kaylee, now a sophomore, had a fat pad cyst, approximately the size of half a golf ball. Surgery was set for Feb. 15, and Todd Herrenbruck performed the arthroscopy. Nate Lee then spent six weeks working with Kaylee on physical therapy. With the surgery being before the season and the intense physical therapy, Kaylee was able to come back to the Cougars’ softball team early in the season, playing primarily left field.

Trojans Eyeing a Deep Run in 2019 By Joanna Chadwick From Game 1, Southeast of Saline football coach Mitch Gebhardt has emphasized the need to go 1-0. It’s a common ploy that coaches use as a way of getting athletes to focus only on what’s right in front of them. For the Trojans, that singular focus was important with a young offensive and defensive line -- and a stacked district.

The Trojans won their first four games and then lost to Rossville in the second game of districts, reinforcing the need to just deal with what they can

“We do not look ahead,” Gebhardt said. “Our kids have bought into taking it one week at a time, taking steps forward. I think that it helps us every week.”

It’s not always easy playing for a coach who is also your dad.

“I feel like we’ve done a good job as a family separating football and home stuff,” Mitch Gebhardt said. “It’s been a really good experience.” Gebhardt also has freshmen twins on the team -Luke and Jake.

“It’s nice to have that family connection,” Jaxson Gebhardt said. “Family isn’t afraid to tell you what they think. There’s more of a trust and a bond.”

Gebhardt, a two-year starter who also started two games at quarterback as a freshman, has become a strong leader.

“We learned through our first four games what we need to do to prepare and that it really does pay off,” junior wide receiver-linebacker Tyler Breeding said. “We saw results. When we played together, we saw wins.

“Through this loss, we’ll go back to that.”

“As he’s gotten older, he understands the game a lot better. He has gotten so he’s probably a better runner than he was last year,” Gebhardt said.

Southeast of Saline’s strength is in its skill players. The Trojans have a strong corps of receivers in Eli Haris, Breeding and Bryant Banks.

“I like how my receivers can always find an opening and get to where I can get them the ball,” Jaxson Gebhardt said.

Banks, the Trojans’ running back, is a threat coming out of the backfield whether he’s running the ball, blocking or looking for a pass. “He’s an absolute monster in the weight room,” Breeding said. “He’s been our leader in there. … I think it allows him to play physical. He’s a big, stout running back, a smashmouth-type running back. It

Sterling Tennis Youth Movement

By Joanna Chadwick Sterling tennis coach Curtis Thompson has seen his fair share of players in his 21 years with the Black Bears, 10 years at Barton Community College and three years at Great Bend High School. Maybe his Twitter bio says it best: “I’m never tired. I live on the tennis courts. Catch me outside.” He’s had his share of athletes advance to the state tournament.

“But the most I’ve had is two doubles teams or a doubles team and a singles player,” Thompson said. “We finished one point out of third place with fewer entries a couple times. Last year we finished tied for fifth at state. We’ve had pretty good teams, but not good enough to be in the top three at state.”

Sterling took second at regionals, qualifying every player for state. Sterling’s 2019 team was deep.

Kinzie Conley paired with Aubrey Anderson to form the No. 1 doubles team. Conley was in her second season playing tennis, while Anderson was in her first. “They are pretty confident about their game,” Thompson said. “Aubrey is pretty good about reacting at the net and putting away shots. Kinzie is an overall big hitter, but they both cover the court pretty well. They do a good job of communicating and supporting each other.”

Riley Richter moved from No. 1 singles in 2018 to No. 2 doubles with partner Natalie Schweizer. “Riley gets to a lot of balls, is a pretty strong player and has a really good serve,” Thompson said. “I think both of them are really receptive to coaching and work hard on what they need to do.”

Sterling had two freshmen at singles -- Karissa Wilson and Kate Rowland.

“Karissa really prefers doubles, but again, I thought we’d have our best opportunity to get more to state if I put her in singles,” Thompson said. “She has adjust pretty well. She’s not as big or as strong as some of her competition, but she has a 13-8 record at No. 1 singles…. She covers the court pretty well. She’s pretty good about keeping the ball in play and not beating herself on points.” One of Rowland’s biggest strengths was her competitiveness.

“She’s got this attitude that she’s going to get a lot of balls back,” Thompson said. “She’s hitting bigger shots with a little more power, and that will help her out. This is her first year doing tennis, and she’s made a lot of progress. She’s really coachable.”

Salina South: Gaining Momentum By Brad Hallier A sub-.500 record doesn’t instill fear in many opponents. But Salina South’s boys soccer team is a bit different.

Yes, through 13 games, the Cougars were an unspectacular 6-7. But in fairness, South has been decimated by injury. Earlier this season, the injury bug kept its distance. As such, the Cougars looked sharp in a one-goal loss to powerful Eisenhower, and a pair of overtime losses to a strong McPherson team.

Then, the Cougars rattled off five wins in a row, including one against last year’s 4-3-2-1A state runner-up Buhler. “The first three games were rough, but then we went on a five-game win streak, and we were playing some good soccer,” South coach Trey Crow said. Then, it became a case of what could go wrong, did go wrong. Senior midfielder Ernesto Martinez, a smart, savvy, selfless player, suffered his third concussion, all but ending his soccer career.

Then, before a game with Campus, junior forward Brandon Oaks broke his arm. “Probably our best player,” Crow said. “He’s second in goals, first in assists … he’s still able to play, but not as efficient.”

The Cougars started to struggle. They lost four in a row, including two by a 2-1 margin.

They were close. But injuries were just too much. Still, Crow doesn’t want to hear excuses. “Nobody feels sorry for us,” Crow said. “Everyone has injuries. It’s a major issue for everyone.”

All is not lost. Oaks is expected to lose the full-arm cast for just a forearm cast, and other banged-up players are starting to make their way back to health. Crow has credited junior Jorge Navarro for his leadership in the midfield. All the while, younger players have stepped in and provided valuable minutes. It may not help in terms of wins right now, but Crow is looking forward to the postseason, when South should be healthier, well tested and maybe with a little more depth. And, of course, a team ripe to deal with any sort of adversity.

“I think they’re starting to handle it better,” Crow said. “Early on, they struggled, they wanted to make excuses, but we got on them. It’s a cliche to say ‘Next man up’, but it’s true. The next man has to step up and play a role different than they’re used to. “If we can weather the storm, we should be OK. My point to the guys is, look at the teams we played with when we were healthy. I know they’re frustrated, but they need to get past it. We’ll be fine, even with injuries.”

Salina Area Athlete Spotlight: Mason Richards - Sacred Heart Sacred Heart junior Mason Richards grew up watching his brother play sports and knew that he was bound to follow in his footsteps. “When I was little, our family traveled throughout Kansas to watch my older brother Tate play sports and I instantly knew that someday I wanted to be the one playing,” he said. Now, Richards plays football, basketball, and baseball at Sacred Heart, where he says his

favorite thing about it is being a part of a team and building relationships with his teammates and coaches. It is this bond that he strives to honor when on the field or the court. He wants to make those around him proud.

“Doing my best in athletics is important to me because I don’t want to let my teammates down,” he said. “They, along with my family, are very supportive and this motivates me to be the best person and student-athlete I can be.” One thing that stands out to Richards that illustrates the camaraderie between he and his teammates is the pregame locker room rituals before football games that get everyone ready to play. In addition to the teammates, fellow students, and coaches who make up his support system, Richards credits his family with always being his number one fans and role models.

“My dad and my oldest brother are two people I admire most,” he said. “They taught me how to play sports and have taken me to numerous sporting events over the years. As a family, we’ve spent countless hours playing pickup games in the front yard and bonding over sports. My dad has always encouraged my brothers and I to carry ourselves in a positive

Outside the realm of athletics, Richards says he enjoys his high school because of the smaller class sizes and a community atmosphere. “I like getting to know all of the students and teachers by name,” he said.

He also volunteers for Prayer and Action, Relay for Life, and at his church, St. Elizabeth Ann Seaton, while maintaining a landscaping job in the summer. After high school, Richards would love to continue his athletic career in college.

Taylor Briggs Taylor, a junior at Chapman, was one of the top runners at the Rim Rock Farm HS XC Classic on Sept. 28 at Rim Rock Farm, just north of Lawrence. On one of the most challenging courses in the nation, Taylor finished fifth overall, finishing the 5,000-meter run in 18 minutes, 55.9 seconds. The race featured not only some of the top runners in Kansas, but also schools from Oklahoma, Colorado, Arkansas and Iowa.

DILLONS CELEBRATES THE 2019 KANS VETERANS FOR THEIR SERVICE & THAN DILLONS IS PROUD TO BE PART OF THE A letter from Carmen Johnson, mother of a Maize High cheer graduate and Kansas Honor Flight supporter: We were introduced to Kansas Honor Flight by Pat Leon, volunteer for KHF, (her son Chris went to Maize High) in the fall of 2016. We took a group of cheerleaders out to Eisenhower Airport to welcome back 40 veterans who had spent the last three days in Washington DC - and we were hooked! There are flights every two weeks in the fall and then start up again in mid-spring. The cheerleaders have tried to be at every welcome home since their first on 10/21/16.

In the fall of 2017, the coaches brainstormed with KHF to have an honorary night at Maize’s home football home opener. We raised funds by holding 50/50 raffles and collecting aluminum cans, while feeding any vets that showed up for the game. The students at Maize High jumped on board and make the game “patriotic” themed. The idea stuck and we recently held our third annual KHF night and raised over $3,000 to fund flights for vets. All Metal Recycling has played a big part in our fundraising throughout the year; we have

collected aluminum cans to be recycled and directed those funds to Kansas Honor Flight. Dillons also donated this year, solely funding one trip to DC. We love seeing the veterans coming home, with tears of happiness in their eyes. Many did not receive such a welcome when they returned after serving time for our country. The cheerleaders and staff at Maize High have made an impact on these veterans, but the veterans have also opened many eyes to a generation that might have forgotten them. Maize High has grown to appreciate them! It’s a win-win situation. We began going to Honor Flights on 10/21/16. It was KHF #43... the last flight that they went to was KHF #76.. that’s 33 honor flights that they have welcomed since they started! Wow! GoCreate (Kim McCollum specifically) has given the cheer squad an opportunity to make metal sculptures (Iwojima replicas) and sell them for $60... 100% of that amount goes straight to fund flights for KHF. We can still make and sell these to anyone interested.

Chaparral High School football Chaparral took not one, but two trips to Wichita in the opening month of the season. The Roadrunners made the two-hour roundtrip a success each time, as they first beat Wichita Trinity 20-0 on Sept. 13 and and then beat Wichita Independent 49-0 two weeks later. Iverson Bello had 120 rushing yards and a touchdown at Trinity. Two weeks later, Chaparral returned to Wichita and beat Independent. Jack Francis had three touchdowns, including one on a punt return and another on a kickoff return. Raiden Atkins added three touchdowns.

“What makes bowling interesting and fun to enjoy is the people I’m surrounded by,” she said. “Making amazing relationships and new friends. And of course having the best coach, Mr. White.”

One of these un-dull moments came after a fateful bet, as Billings shares.

“My favorite memory with bowling throughout the years, especially high school, is making friends and making bets with Mr. White,” she said. “One of our last bets was if I were to pick up a split, that I got to pick out where we wanted to eat. We went out at IHOP with the girls varsity team and it was White’s birthday. Knowing he doesn’t like sweets, I told our server it was his birthday to get some ice cream. Long story short, I ended up laughing so hard and spit it all over him.”

My motivation in school and bowling, especially now, is always thinking about what my dad would want for me.”

The high school team doubled in size this fall. The Crusaders organized a youth club, and that brought a double-digit turnout of potential future runners.

The Buhler boys cross country team is formulating its 4A title defense with sophomore Tanner Lindahl in the lead. Lindahl, with one individual state championship checked off the list, took the first step to bringing Buhler a historic four individual titles. The chance to keep this under wraps, like a pitcher throwing a no-hitter, is long gone. Lindahl is fully aware of the precedent he could set – and the gravity of the implication to fulfill it. “I think about it,” Lindahl said, laughing. “It’s kind of funny, because the last two guys that have won as freshmen haven’t won as sophomores. It’s kind of the sophomore curse.”

“It’s fun to win races, but it’s also fun to see where you measure up,” he said. “I’m pretty excited for that race to use race strategy and try to pass people, things I’m not used to.” Buhler won state by 34 points, and returns much of its roster.

Two freshmen, Spencer Hines and Wyatt Bunce, already proved their talent with top 10 finishes at the Concordia Invitational. Lindahl is the leader by default. It comes with the territory of being a championship-caliber

DRIVE TO ZERO STUDENT OF THE MONTH Dylan Koehn, Bennington By Emmie Boese Whether it’s competing in cross country or advocating for organizations at his school, Dylan Koehn is a well-rounded student. Koehn is a junior at Bennington High School and a member of the cross country team, track team, S.A.F.E, Mentor Magic, FFA 4-H program, NHS and FCA. He has been on the cross country team for the past three seasons including this season. He started running cross country in order to find a sport to be involved in. Koehn said he likes being a part of cross country because of the team aspect.

“My parents have a rule where you have to play a sport,” Koehn said. “There are no individuals really. When I first joined the team no one really singled anyone out.”

When he first started, he said he was not a top contender, but he still enjoyed the sport because he was able to show people what hard work is.

“I used to be one of the last runners finishing but I’ve built up quite a bit since then,” Koehn said. “Not impressing people but showing someone, you can do the best you can.”

In addition to his involvement with cross country, one of the organizations that Koehn has a lot of involvement in is S.A.F.E. S.A.F.E. stands for “Seatbelts Are For Everyone.” Kohen is the secretary for this organization and had been a part of it throughout high school. He said this year he feels like the organization is going to have a strong impact at his school. He also said one of the reasons he joined S.A.F.E. was because he grew up knowing the importance of seat belts. “Well, my family is really big on seatbelts,” Koehn said. “Just want to keep my classmates safe. Just learning how to advocate that seatbelts are for everyone.”

Bennington’s head cross country coach Rena Mick said Koehn is a great leader on the cross country team and the organizations he is a part of by the way he carries himself. His leadership skills have led to him being named a captain for this season. “He is a great leader by example,” Mick

said. “He works hard and encourages others. He is a positive person to be around. His character and integrity make him an asset to every organization he belongs to.”
