Hellas Field of the Month: Andover Central
6
Andover Central had seen other turf companies come and go since getting their first turf field back in 2000. Project Managers Alonso Arredondo and Jared Carr contacted the Vice President of Development at Hellas Construction, Michelle Kuhns, it wasn’t just about new turf, it was about creating a sports complex not just a sports facility. Combined with Hutton Construction and Schaffer, Johnson, Cox and Frey Architects, the team became a true partnership in creating a complex any student-athlete would be proud to call home.
Hellas helped transform the middle school field and track into a new state of the art facility. With the new cushdrain mat under the turf and the color inlaid exchange lanes on the track it is truly a beautiful facility. Integrating the new field into an existing baseball and softball facility, along with a new 14 court tennis complex makes it one of a kind in the state of Kansas. Hella’s reputation and staff were two of the biggest selling points for Arrendondo and Carr. This along with the state-of-the-art products made this an easy choice for them. Safety was at the top of the list for Andover Central and Hellas was able to provide the latest technology with the new cushdrain mat. The overall satisfaction of the finished product is immeasurable.

Student of the Month Brecken Pearson Canton-Galva
treatment and is close to being back at 100 percent.
OnCanton-Galva High School sophomore Brecken Pearson is a member of the volleyball, softball and cheer teams. As a three-sport athlete, Pearson like many of her teammates, experience nagging injuries that occur throughout the year. Recently Pearson experienced what is known as GIRD and bursitis in her right shoulder. GIRD or Glenohumeral Internal Rotation Deficit is a condition common in pitchers and those who throw a lot. The loss of internal rotation requires physical therapy which Pearson received at Advanced PT.
“I am about 80 percent and in a couple weeks I can start setting and I will still have to work on getting back to full overhead activity for volleyball and softball,” said Pearson. “Getting to know the people and learning about the different techniques and exercise to help me get better.” Continuing to play and be there for her teammates is important to Pearson. Returning to competition is something she is looking forward to doing soon. Even though she is only a sophomore, Pearson is thinking ahead to her life after high school and what that will look like, which will include attending college and possibly playing at the next level.
“My experience at Advanced PT has been really good. They are all very nice and have helped gain mobility and strength back in my shoulder,” said Pearson.
“Right now, I would like to go to college and major in accounting. I would also like to participate in softball, volleyball, or cheer in college if the opportunity presents itself,” said Pearson.
The bursitis is an inflammation that can cause swelling and worsen over time. Overuse of the arm and a repetitive throwing motion is a common cause. With physical therapy, Pearson is getting better with each
Look for Pearson to overcome this setback with the help of Advanced PT and a desire to compete for Canton-Galva High School and her teammates.
IMPORTANCE OF PROPER LIFTING TECHNIQUE
Amanda Noll, PT, DPT, CSCS Walking into any gym, you are guaranteed to see people lifting weights. Some
light weight, some heavy. What you are also almost guaranteed to see is someone lifting weights incorrectly. Whether you’re a weekend warrior, full time athlete, or someone who goes to the gym regularly, proper lifting technique is essential for avoiding injury. Improper lifting technique leads to compensatory motions throughout the body leading to increased injury risk, especially with lifts that involve the entire body such as squat, clean, and deadlift. Different compensations lead to increased risk for back, knee, hip, and shoulder injuries that will hinder your performance and may even force you to stop exercising for a period of time.
In order to determine if you are ready to starting lifting weights, or increasing the amount of weight you are lifting, it is important to make sure you can properly perform each lift using your body weight first. It is very important to understand that if you can’t perform the movement properly without weight, you shouldn’t be performing it with weight. So your next question may be, “how do I know if I am lifitng correctly or ready to advance my exercises?” Great question! Going to see a physical therapist for a movement evaluation/assessment, especially one who is certified in strength and conditioning, is a perfect place to start! A physical therapist with evaluate you from head to toe, watch your lifting technique, and design a program to help you lift appropriately so that you can avoid injury and stay in the gym. If you or anyone you know has concerns about lifting technique or wants to start a lifting program, call one of our locations to set up and evaluation and treatment plan so that you can continue being the best you can be!

SALINA AREA SOCCER
Salina Area Soccer By Matt Browning The McPherson Bullpups were the No. 4 seed in the Class 5A playoffs last season, but they lost a significant amount of talent from that team that finished with a 143-2 record. The Bullpups do return first team all-league defender Cody Achilles, second team allleague defender Caden Hardgrave and honorable mention all-league defender Logan Ediger. Being able to put the ball in the net will be the biggest question mark for McPherson this year, as its defense should be solid. Salina South finished the season 6-10 after losing to Kapaun Mount Carmel in the first round of the playoffs. The Cougars do return
second team all-league midfielder Brandon Oaks and second team all-league defender Nik Highsmith. Oaks was McPherson Soccer second on the team in year and lost to McPherson in the goals last year with 12, while Highsmith was first round of the playoffs. The Mustangs bring back first team allsecond on the team in minutes played at 425. Salina Regional Orthopedic and Sports Medicine. All you need to keep moving forward.
Salina Regional Coach of the Month: Ryan Stuart - Salina South Coach Ryan Stuart has coached for several years at Salina South High School, coaching several sports from basketball to tennis.
“I started coaching basketball for Salina South in the 2002-03 season. My first coaching job was assistant boy’s freshman coach. I started coaching tennis, first at the middle school level, in the spring of 2004. Currently, I am in my 14th year as head girl’s tennis coach, and I will be beginning my 8th year as head girls basketball, and 6th year as head boy’s tennis coach later in the school year,” said Stuart.
The girls tennis team placed 2nd at state last year and coach Stuart said they have another strong team this season. “Our girls tennis team is coming off the two most successful seasons in school history (5A runner-up in 2019, and 5A 3rd place in 2018). We graduated two outstanding players, Robyn Logan and Jillian Coleman off of last year’s team, but we still have some very solid players returning, highlighted by Alexxa Nunemaker (Sr.), Iliana Armbrust (Jr.), and Tess Daily (So.). I am very excited about the prospects of this season,” said Stuart. Coaching in 2020 does have a new look and coach Stuart, like many others, is taking the proper precautions for his players.
“Obviously, the safety of players, coaches, and spectators is the number one priority, and I feel very comfortable with the procedures in place to mitigate COVID-19 concerns. At the same time, it is so refreshing to see our student-athletes out competing again,” said Stuart.
Stuart said the most enjoyable part about coaching is the, “day-to-day interactions with my players which lead to lasting relationships.” There are many reasons why coaching and teaching at Salina South is special to Stuart. “First and foremost, the student-athletes, and the parents who raised them, have been very supportive. The administration has also been very supportive throughout the years. Another very special part of coaching at Salina South is the number of extremely talented assistant coaches I have had the privilege to work with, and the comradery which has been built with them,” said Stuart.
Over the years several people have mentored and taught Stuart a lot about being a coach and educator. “Longtime Salina South boys’ basketball coach,
520 S. Santa Fe, Ste. 240 • Salina, KS 785-452-7366
Denny Wahlgren, was the first head coach I worked for. Coach Wahlgren is extremely knowledgeable, and I learned so much from him, and still do to this day. When it comes to tennis, two coaches come to mind. First, Connie Cox-Dorf, who coached tennis at Bethany College, and then decided to help a very green, first-year head tennis coach, 14 years ago. Second, Micheal Goll, head tennis coach at Salina Central, who 18 years ago hired me to help him coach tennis at Salina South Middle School, where at the time, he served as head coach. It is impossible for me to even put into words how much Coach CoxDorf and Coach Goll have taught me over the years,” said coach Stuart. “The above coaches, and countless more, have helped me so much throughout my coaching career. However, the biggest mentors to me will always be my parents. Alan and Mary Stuart. If I am able to help guide even a few of my studentathletes as well as my parents have guided me throughout my lifetime, I will consider my career a definitive success!”

“I love how our team has such great chemistry this year. We all have lots of experience on the varsity court and we all have the same goal and mindset that we would do anything to win and get back to the state tournament,” said Berg. “I was so excited when I heard that I would get the opportunity to be able to play my senior year. Jared Baxa from Republic County was chosen as the Hog Wild Performance of the Month for his game against Beloit on September 4. Baxa ran for 264 yards and two touchdowns on just 14 carries in the Buffaloes’ 30-14 victory over Beloit. It was Republic County’s first win over the Trojans since 1999. It felt absolutely amazing to perform the way I did,” Baxa said. “I have always been consistent in the running game and felt like I bumped the intensity up during the game which also helped me in my confidence of realizing I couldn't be stopped.” The running game was the primary focus of Republic County’s game plan against Beloit. If the Buffaloes could run the ball effectively then Baxa believed they could win. “We went into the game knowing we were going to beat Beloit by using our speed as an advantage,” Baxa said. “I would say we needed to be successful running the ball because we are a running team more than a passing team, and our strength is focused on our speed and strength in the backfield.”

Eisenhower Football On September 11th, the Tigers of Eisenhower took on Salina Central in what would turn into one of the best games of the early season.
Friend would add a 30-yard TD run just before the half.
Fullback/linebacker Cody Hawks (Jr.) was a standout player with three scores and 16 tackles with one sack for the Tigers.
But Central was not done, grabbing a quick score just before the half to go up, 27-21.
In a 45-42 overtime victory, Eisenhower showed they have the ability to come from behind and make the plays when it counted the most. Early in the game, the Central Mustangs scored the first two touchdowns, but Eisenhower kept their focus and on the first play of the second quarter, Nick Hogan (Sr.) tossed a 9-yard TD to Cade Friend (Jr.) to get the Tigers on the board.
Cody Houser (6-1, 175, Sr.) snatched an interception from his free safety spot and returned the ball 45-yards for a touchdown, which tied the game.
Hawks would put two of his three touchdowns on the board in back-to-back scores making it a 3427 game. Central responded with another quick score, but Hawks and the Tigers had an answer. Hawks punched one in for his third TD of the night and the Tigers went up, 42-34 at the end of

DRIVE TO ZERO STUDENT OF THE MONTH Peyton Piepho, Bennington Peyton Piepho is a senior at Bennington High School and a member of the SAFE Program. She first joined SAFE when she was a freshman, following in the footsteps of her brother. Piepho also participates in cross-country, basketball and track. “In cross-country I’ve been All-State for two years with a 4th place finish at state in 2017. I was a part of state crosscountry teams that have finished 2nd, 3rd, and 1st, respectively, over the last three years. Last year I was Academic All-state in cross-country as well. In basketball I am a three-year letterman and was the starting point guard on the BHS team that made school history in 2020 with the school’s first appearance in the state basketball tournament. In track I was a state medalist with a 4th place finish in the 3200M run and a 1st and 2nd place finish in the 4x800M relay. My track team finished 1st and 2nd place at state,” said Piepho. “The thing I appreciate the most about my teammates is that they hold me accountable and constantly push me to give 100 percent and nothing less. They are my second family and the bonds we share make me constantly strive to be the best that I can be.”
“Returning to school and competition has been very important to me. I missed out on my spring track season so it made me realize that sports and education can’t be
The impact the pandemic has had on the SAFE activities has been significant according to Piepho. “Unfortunately, COVID-19 has impacted our SAFE activities. Traditionally we have attended the Kansas Teen Transportation Safety Conference which may not be held this year. We also tend to invite guest speakers into the school to discuss various topics, but this will be more challenging this year due to limiting outsiders in our school and the fact that school assemblies are being discouraged,” said Piepho. “One of the SAFE activities that I most enjoy is helping lead the annual 8th Grade Workshop which prepares incoming students by educating them on such topics as drugs, alcohol, social media, and peer pressure. Everyday teens have the opportunity to make choices that impact their lives, we want to give them the tools to make the right choices.”

taken for granted. Even though track last spring and most of my summer sports activities were cancelled, I continued working to improve my abilities by participating in a distance running club and taking personal basketball lessons so that I would be prepared once sports were available,” said Piepho. “Serving in a leadership role in our SAFE organization is important to me. I have personally had several friends that have survived car accidents because they were wearing their seatbelts. Nothing drives home the importance of seatbelts more than seeing that seatbelts truly do save lives.”

Anesthesia Associates Mom of the Month: Heather Johnson Beloit Heather Johnson has served as Beloit High School Booster Club president for the last five years.
“We have a fantastic group of dedicated parents that are very passionate about Beloit athletics and are very dedicated to our Booster Club. Fundraising, organizing team apparel, social media postings, membership drives, sport team parties are just a few of the endeavors and accomplishments of our Booster Club,” said Johnson. She has three student-athletes in daughter Sydney who was a three-sport athlete and is a current junior at the University of Missouri, Avery who is a senior and a member of the track team and Eli the youngest of the three who is in the 8th grade and playing football, basketball, track and is on the trap shooting team. “I am a lifelong Trojan fan and alumni that bleeds black and orange. Beloit Schools have made such a positive impact on not only my personal life but also my children’s lives, giving back to this great school system is the least thing I can do. It’s also super fun to work with a group of student-athletes, coaches, school staff, administration, family, and fans that are just as passionate about the success of USD 273 as I am,” said Johnson. “The first people I would have to mention is my family, especially my husband and my kids. My husband Jim, is a true Rockstar that only shakes his head but never says no with each of my crazy ideas. Finally, I have to mention the coaches, school staff, and administration of Beloit schools who are always 100% supportive, work hard to help us in every way possible, and are so positive regarding all our efforts.”
