McAlester Football Ready To Roam In 2013 Riding the emotion of 40 wins during the past four seasons, McAlester Buffalo football is the talk of the town. After back-to-back trips to the Class 5A semi-finals, could 2013 be the year of gold?
“The whole town is talking about it,” smiled head coach Bryan Pratt. “The kids on our team, plus the new turf and track at our stadium, are creating a lot of energy behind McAlester football. Because, as one man put it to me the other day, it’s something that doesn’t just happen.” The 2013 lineup for Pratt’s squad is filled with experience, especially on offense, as nine starters return from a year ago. And, while only five starters return to the ‘Black Death’ defense, expectations are high.
“This year’s team is a special group of players,” admits Pratt, who enters his 8th season as head coach. “Over the past seven years our program has grown into one of the elite programs. It took a lot of blood, sweat and tears on the practice field, the weight room and inside the indoor practice facility. Our kids and our community have bought into the magic of Buffalo football.” Pratt expects the up-tempo offense to be the catalyst for success early on. A pair of four-year starters, Jarome

Cade Harkins, Caden Pratt, Mikey Verner, Jarome Smith, Allen Woodmore Smith and Caden Pratt, will return as highlight reel playmakers. The two combined for almost 3,000 yards total offense in 2012. “Jarome and Caden have started since they were freshmen,” recalled Pratt. “Those two have 30 wins already and know what it takes to win. They’re expecting to make this season something special.”
returns to engineer the high-powered offense. Add to the list of veterans names like Cade Harkins and Mason Bumphus, who created plenty of excitement along with offensive linemen Mikey Verner, Matt Ferrell and Grant Sontag and the Buffalo offense should continue to put plenty of points on the scoreboard.
“Dalton’s decision making ability gives us a real bonus plus he’s a threat to After an injury forced quarterback Dalton Wood to the sideline in Week 1 run as well as throw the ball. Cade and of 2012, the strong-armed quarterback Mason have proved they have big play potential and our O-line guys will get
list of big time playmakers.
“You win championships with defense,” said Pratt, “and I’m looking forward to watching Riley Smith at nose guard and our linebackers Don Wood, Keaton Slater and Jarome Smith deny our opponents chances to score. We return our entire secondary with Alan Woodmore joining Blakeley Williams, Cade Harkins, Caden Pratt and Mason Bumphus. The combination of speed and strength allows these guys to chase the football with a passion.
Jarome Smith after you on every snap.”
Pratt knows that it takes more than just points on the scoreboard to win games noting the defense has its own
“Every player on our squad knows it’s a long road and you don’t prepare for week one but you prepare every day for week fourteen. We know we have to get better so we can have our chance for a dream come true season.”
As players prepare for the season opener, the community spirit is evident as local support for the school has resulted in a million dollar renovation to Hook Eales Stadium, the home of Buffalo football. The improvements include a new artificial surface and allweather track. “It’s what everyone
wants to talk about,” said Pratt. “What we’ve done with a one million renovation project, it’s unbelievable how much impact this has had. The town has joined hands with more than just football; they’re walking hand-in-hand with the whole school. We’ve got one of the best bands in the state with a hundred plus kids that can practice on the turf instead of a parking lot. The same thing goes for our cheerleaders and pom squads. Our soccer and track teams will benefit as well. Our football team gets to be the first to play on the new turf. We’re all extremely thankful to the people and businesses of McAlester that believe in our school system and athletics program.” With the combination of football talent surrounded by the support of the school and city, the spirit of the Buffalo appears ready to rumble in search of gold.
“There’s a unique spirit,” said Pratt, “something that you can’t just snap your fingers and create. McAlester is a special place and these kids know that. They hear our fans every Friday night. They see the signs. So when we step on the field, we play for the Black and Gold. We play for everyone in McAlester because we know everyone loves the Buffaloes.”

The spirit of the Buffalo is synonymous with Oklahoma, especially in McAlester, where the pride of the black and gold is evident everywhere you look including statues of the school mascot. At school, at sporting events and throughout the town, the pride of McAlester seems almost never ending. At the center of the energy are members of the McAlester High School cheerleader squad who work 24/7 building school spirit and community pride, something that requires total commitment. “It’s not a case of a group of girls bouncing around in cute skirts and bows,” explained Ashlee

Shumway, head coach of the MHS cheer squad the past 10 years. “It’s a commitment. Our cheerleaders know they have to work hard to perform at their best level whether that’s at a game, in cheer competition or supporting our city.”
“As a cheerleader, you learn a lot of skills that prepare you for life,” said Taylor Burmeier, a 2014 senior and member of this year’s Buffaloes cheer team. “The schedule forces you to develop work ethic and responsibility to others.”
“We love our school and our town,” said senior cheerleader Madison Taylor. “Whether we’re cheering at a football game or working with the Red Cross, our group enjoys building the spirit and energy of every event.”
“There are three lives of a McAlester cheerleader,” notes Shumway. “School spirit, state competition and community involvement. The girls on our squad know that and always
The talented group spends 15-20 hours a week year round preparing for the next game as well as being involved in community service all with one goal in mind.
McAlester cheerleaders will be in the frenzy of the Friday night lights each week as the Buffaloes football team competes. Simultaneously, the squad trains for the upcoming OSSAA sponsored state championships.
“The girls know that anything posted is a reflection of our program,” said Shumway. “And we hold each other accountable to making good decisions.”
Taylor Burmeier - Hallie Light - Madison Taylor find a way to get the job done.”
“We like the energy of Friday nights,” said junior Hallie Light. “It’s wild and fun during games trying to keep everybody excited. Students and adults, we do whatever we can to keep our fans rowdy and loud.” Like other sports teams, the McAlester cheerleaders spent the summer in preparation including Summer Pride workouts each day as well as UCA cheer camp at the University of Oklahoma.
“We work out every day,” said Light. “During Cheer Olympics, we had to run a 7:30 mile or keep running. It’s not easy but you learn that you can do it and finish strong just like our football players do in the fourth quarter.”
“At the OU cheer camp, we won the Traditions Award,” said Shumway, “an honor chosen by the teams at the camp that recognized our entire game night program.”
A total of seven girls were selected as UCA All-Americans including Sarah White, Mykaela Donato, Taylor Burmeir, Krysta Diehl, Journey Nunnelee, Hallie Light, and Allie Merrifield earning the opportunity to join UCA and participate in a
New Year’s Day parade in London, England.
Amidst all the preparation for Friday night football, the squad also works to perfect a challenging choreographed routine filled with physically demanding stunts, jumps, tumbling and pyramids to be able to win a 10th consecutive trip to the OSSAA state cheerleading championships. “We’ve made it to state every year I’ve been here,” confirmed Shumway. “And this year’s squad has what it takes to be there again in October.
In addition to their efforts to promote school spirit, McAlester High School cheerleaders cherish the opportunity to give back to the community. Volunteer efforts with the Red Cross, the Hope House and Shared Blessings are just a few. “There’s more than just cheering at the games,” said Shumway. “McAlester cheerleaders accept the responsibility of being a role model and get involved in a host of activities trying to help someone else.” Among the commitments included is the signature of each member of the squad on a social media contract with a promise to avoid the negative comments on Twitter and Facebook.
“We all know that no matter if you’re in uniform or not, we represent our school and the entire city of McAlester,” said Taylor. “Its part of what makes this so much fun whether we’re working with the nursing homes or helping with enrollment for kindergarten and preschool.”
“After the Moore tornadoes, our squad joined with local businesses to collect and deliver supplies to the people there,” recalled Burmeier. “It’s just one way we’ve exampled what school and community spirit is all about.” The past three years, along with the efforts of Oklahoma Students Care, McAlester cheerleaders have sprited efforts during ‘Pink Out’ week. With the help of students, faculty and the McAlester community, the outreach effort has raised more than $10,000 for the cancer center at the hospital in Oklahoma City, where a room has been named in honor of the McAlester Buffaloes. “We’re always doing something that builds spirit,” said Light. “It a really good feeling to know that maybe you’ve helped somebody else and maybe put a smile on their face.”
So what’s the payoff for the efforts of the McAlester cheerleaders? Why all the extra efforts to manage demands for their time and energy? In unison, Shumway and the three cheerleaders agree…Just Win!! Buffaloes and McAlester…you ARE number one!

Lady Buffaloes McAlester Fast-Pitch Softball Reaches New Heights As school bells ring to start a new year, the McAlester Lady Buffs fast-pitch season is already underway. Veteran coach Justin Bond takes the reins to guide the program that returns seven veterans from last season’s 17-14 squad.
A quartet of seniors tops the lineup of experience on the diamond this fall. Topping the charts is senior pitching ace Cheyenne Selman who returns to the circle as well as a proven hitter. Stacey Washington brings speed to the outfield improving the defensive abilities as well as an aggressive approach at the plate as the leadoff hitter in the order. Baylee Dawkins returns to first base while Courtney Smith will share time in the outfield as well as infield. “Cheyenne is our catalyst,” said Bond. “She has the tools to control the game in the circle as well as be productive swinging the bat.” “My go-to pitch is the screw and curveball,” admits Selman. “Screw is the pitch I’ll go to when I need a strike to get the out.” “Stacey’s speed is a real bonus,” smiled Bond. “She’s full speed after the first step making it hard to get her out at the plate as well as adding to her ability to chase down balls hit in the gap.”

“This is a really spirited team, a family,” said Selman. “Almost everyone has spent the summer getting ready to go. It takes every player doing their job and I’m glad to have our defense backing me up.”
A trio of juniors also returns proven experience including Vhitney Garner at second base, Heather Morgano at catcher and outfielder Jaleeb Serhan. The Lady Buffs’ roster will also include a “baker’s dozen” (13) freshmen that, according to Bond, will secure the roster and bolster the opportunities for victories.
“The young girls are talented,” said Bond. “All of them have shown their skills during summer play and I’m glad to have them on our squad.
McAlester will compete in a new Class 5A district that is loaded with championship caliber teams including Carl Albert, Bishop Kelley, Guthrie, Tulsa Memorial, Durant, Tulsa Edison and Shawnee.

“Pitching and playing experience in the lineup gives us a chance to compete with every team on our schedule,” remarked Bond. “These kids’ effort alone will give us plenty of opportunities for us to be in the game every time.”
“It’s going to take a lot of work,” said Selman. “I think
this team has what it takes to leave a mark of success if we stay focused toward one goal.”

Allen Woodmore - McAlester High School
Integrity
Integrity means doing the right thing at all times and in all circumstances, whether or not anyone is watching. It takes having the courage to do the right thing, no matter what the consequences will be. Building a reputation of integrity takes years, but it takes only a second to lose. Success is a choice. Whether in sports, school or life, the choices made each day determine the eventual outcome. Allen Woodmore, a senior at McAlester High School and member of the Buffaloes football team, knows first hand the value of integrity. “It’s all about being accountable,” said Woodmore. “For me that means doing what you’re supposed to do and doing it right the first time.” “Allen does things the right way,” confirmed Bryan Pratt, head football coach at McAlester. “No matter whether he’s in football or walking the halls at school, his character never changes.” “I learned it from the examples set by my mom and dad (Elaine and Arthur),” admits Woodmore. “By their actions, I learned the importance of taking care of my assignments. They taught us that if it’s important enough for someone to ask me to do something, then its important enough for me to do it right.” In today’s society, people will try anything to gain power and get ahead quick. Woodmore’s performance on and off the field demonstrates that the 17-year old understands there are no shortcuts to victory. “Allen sets the example for our team,” said Pratt. “He lives his life proving that character is most important. For him, it’s something that stays the same 24/7. Teachers 14

compliment his behavior. He shows his character through his commitment to those around him.” “Other people rely upon me for lots of things,” said Woodmore, “so it’s my responsibility to help any way I can whether that’s my parents, family members as well as my teammates, coaches, teachers and friends.” As a senior entering his final season of football as well as an upcoming soccer season next spring, Woodmore wants to leave his mark. “Other people’s opinions of you will be heard by someone, a college recruiter or an employer,” notes Woodmore. “First impressions are hard to change. So, you have to always do your best.” “In our captain’s interviews, Allen defined dedication as doing things better than you’re taught and working harder than anyone else,” said Pratt. “Those aren’t just his words, but it’s how he lives and what he expects of himself. We should all be more like him in everything we do.” Perhaps a plaque should be hung inside the football locker room that would read “Do what is right, let the consequence follow.” It would serve as a daily reminder that success will indeed come and go, but integrity is forever. And, smiling back would be a photo of Allen Woodmore, as proof that those words are proven through the results and the example he sets for everyone he meets.

The four-year starter rushed for 1500 yards and scored 23 touchdowns in 2012 and drawing the eye of college recruiters. Hunter Needham (5-11, 195, Sr.) brings a toughness approach at H-back. Chase Woods (5-11, 165, Jr.), a state qualifier in the 100 meters, will add speed to the running game. Seth Burk (5-11, 185, Jr.) returns at quarterback along with his favorite receiver Jimmy Sparks (5-9, 150, Jr.), who snared 35 receptions last season. Experience remains in the front line behind the play of Tanner Dugger (6-1, 230, Sr.), Kane Konsure (6-0, 215, Sr.), Bryan Smith (6-1, 210, Sr.), Tanner Brown (6-4, 230, Jr.) while Dayton Trammel (5-11, 185, Jr.) takes the field at center. DEFENSE Coach James Bond’s defense will continue to play in attack mode as eight starters return. Hunter Needham will move to the linebacker position while Kane Konsure will lineup at nose guard this year. Joining the linebacker group will be Tanner Dugger, Seth Burk and Ryan Weeks (511, 180, Jr.) in the 3-4 alignment. Talent and playmaking ability returns in the secondary including cornerback Jimmy Sparks, who had six interceptions last season, along with Josh Holloway (5-9, 165, Jr.) while Christian Preston roams
the field at strong safety. “Our lineup has experienced players that have won before,” said Bond. “Our approach is pretty simple, nothing fancy just play hard. The Diggers will employ a total new look moving from the Wing-T to the 5-wide spread attack that will feature the talents of quarterback Cade Fite (6-2, 210, Sr.). “Cade is a dual threat,” said Marsaln. “His athleticism allows him to make big plays.” Tyler Stafford (5-10, 170, Sr.), Cody Arnold (6-1, 170, Sr.) and John Fite (6-3, 180, So.) make up the receiver combinations in the up-tempo style offense. Cody Silva (6-3, 280, Jr.) and Josh Kendrick (6-4, 200, Jr.) provide size to the offensive front line. DEFENSE Three starters are back on defense in the 3-4 scheme. Cody Silva takes advantage
of his size and strength to demand double teams by opponents along with Christian Beauchamp (6-2, 240, So.) while Trey Darnell (5-10, 185, So.) and Josh Kendrick match strength and quickness to the football to make plays. Tyler Barnes (5-7 205, So.) and Josh McCabe (5-7, 160, So.) will fill linebacker positions. “We’re making the shift to the 3-4 attacking style to take advantage of our quickness,” notes Marsaln. “We’ll start the season young in experience but I expect we’ll catch up. The roster is filled with talented athletes who are showing a real desire to win.” Four of the first six games will be played at home that gives the youthful Wilburton squad a chance to develop and mature. I know that may sound crazy since Antlers went 0-10 last year but I think we are better than what people saw and may give us credit for,” Speer said. “We have some good players and some new kids that haven’t played for a few years that I think are going to make a big impact.” One of the players Speer will count on is his son, and starting quarterback, Zach Speer (5-10, 210, Sr.). Zach saw playing time at Henryetta in each of the last three years and was a consistent performer there throwing for over 1,300-1,500 yards in both his sophomore and junior years as the Knights starting signal caller. The Bearcats will also count on senior wide receivers Nick Evans and Tanner Brown. Evans may also play some running back this fall. Brown meanwhile is back on the team after not playing for the last several years. Tanner’s cousin Tristan Brown (6-0,
295, Sr.) will be the Bearcats leader on the offensive line. Also look for running back Bryce Carter to be an important player in the Antlers offense this year. DEFENSE Many of the Bearcats’ top offensive players will also be essential parts of the defense. Speer will start at strong safety giving the Bearcats some senior leadership in the secondary. Also in the defensive backfield will be Tanner Brown and senior Isaiah Conley. Tristan Brown will start on the defensive line leaving Carter as a starting linebacker for the Bearcats. Senior Lucas Austin will join Carter in the linebacking corp giving Antlers two players who will hit anything that moves. “We are going to be real aggressive on defense. We run to the ball well and have decent size with pretty good linebackers and safeties,” Speer said. Four starters return for the Cougars’ 1-back veer option attack led by quarterback Caleb Jarrett (6-0, 165, Jr.). “Caleb’s speed and ability to throw the ball makes him invaluable to our system,” said Terney. Jacob Motley (5-9, 175, Jr.), Phillip Duncan (5-10, 300, Sr.) and Nick Christian (6-1, 190, Jr.) provide the front line protection. Justin Hayes (6-1, 160, Sr.) and Paul Childers (6-1, 155, So.) will be the primary targets for Jarrett when throwing the football. DEFENSE Canadian will employ the 3-5 alignment to bolster the defensive efforts to contain and attack. Phillip Duncan returns to the nose guard position as the “chief” of the defensive front. Jacob Motley, described by Terney as the strongest kid on the squad,
leads the linebacker corps for the Cougars. “We’re continuing our growing pains,” said Terney. “Our young guys are inexperienced but have the heart to get the job done.” Playing four of its first five games in front of the home fans, the Cougars’ schedule includes seven home contests after last year’s campaign road swing. Jaylon Watson OFFENSE
At Broken Bow, football is “the game” in town every Friday night. And, when opponents venture inside the rock wall surrounding the field, opponents can expect an old fashioned battle. “We’re pretty much what you see if what you get,” said Scott Pratt. “The offense will feature our tailbacks and then let our defense take care of business.” Opponents can expect the same in 2013 as the Savages running game will showcase the talents of VYPE Top 100 performer Jaylon Watson (6-1, 220, Jr.), who rushed for 700 yards last season. “Jaylon has the ability to run for tough yards,” said Pratt, “and then when he gets a crease has the speed to take it the distance.” Adding to power of the running game will be Dillon Leffel (510, 195, Sr.) and Tyler McKinney (5-10, 195, Sr.). Jake Callahan (5-8, 170, Jr.) will “manage the game” at quarterback as the Savages will operate from the Pistol formation this season. “Jake

The Savages’ transition to the 3-4 alignment is a “perfect match” for the players wearing the Black and Gold. “It fits our personnel,” said Pratt. “With the 3-4 scheme we can keep more athletic players on the field and keep pressure on our opponents.”
Hard nose and hard hitting describes the Savages attack that features four linebackers led by Dillon Leffel, who totaled 80 tackles last season, along with Brian Harris (6-0, 205, Sr.), who recorded 77 stops, Tyler McKinney
and Kason Meddock (5-9, 175, Jr.). The new alignment will allow VYPE Top 100 standout Jaylon Watson to roam at free safety after commanding attention last year at defensive end, where he charted 55 tackles including four sacks. Josh Patel (5-10, 170, Sr.), who grabbed three interceptions while making 60 stops will be joined by Blue McNeal, Daekwon Cubit and Dalton Weaver (6-3. 190, Jr.) in the secondary. Johnaton Hurd (6-3, 240, Jr.), Devin Lyons (6-1, 220, Jr.) along with Elijah Hallford and Tyler Scott (5-9, 190, So.) will be part of the front three rotation. “We have a chance to be a really good football team,” admits Scott. “They’re just a bunch of hard nose kids that live to play football and they’re all about team success.”

Excitement is high as the Warriors return eight starters to its two-back shotgun offensive formation that has the weapons to score at anytime. Boochie Threatt (6-0, 190, Jr.) returns at quarterback while Tre Wakefield (60, 195, Sr.) will again lineup at running back alongside Eli Grass (5-10, 225, Jr.) at fullback. “We’ve tailored the offense for Boochie because of his gamebreaker skills,” said coach Micah Mashburn. “Tre is not only strong but has 4.5 speed to match.” Idabel

VYPE caught up with three of the top athletes in the Southeast Oklahoma region to discuss their teams, the upcoming season and the craziness that can be the locker room. before. Coach Pratt really got us in shape this offseason, we ran a lot of sprints after lifting, we went through stuff other teams didn’t, and what made it better was that we all pulled together as one. One unit, one team, and conqouerd our obstacles.
Boochie Threatt - Our team hangs out a lot trying to spend as much time as we can on and off the field together. We are there for each other at all times. We lift weights, do agility drills and we run. Practice has been good this year.
Jaylen Watson Boochie Threatt from Idabel, Trey Johnson of Hugo and Jaylon Watson from Broken Bow are three tremendously talented athletes that look to lead their teams this season. With practice underway Boochie, Trey and Jaylon took a few minutes to answer our pressing questions and give us an idea of what life is like with the season rapidly approaching. VYPE: Tell me something about your team. What have you guys done this offseason and how has practice been going?
Trey Johnson - We are a very experienced team this year. I have been with this team for four years now. This year we are very dedicated to winning and will surprise people. We have been going hard since 7-on7 through the whole summer pride. We should be ready when the first game gets here.

VYPE: Who are the vocal leaders on the team? Boochie Threatt – Myself, Elijah Grass, Ryan Scales, Braden Wesley and Trey Wakefield. We are all very vocal.
Jaylon Watson - Everyone is vocal in the Broken Bow field house, but only a few are more vocal than some. Me, Dillon Leffel, Josh Patel, Damon Slabaugh, Aj Powell, Blue McNeal, and Brian Harris. Trey Johnson - The vocal leaders would be myself and all of the seniors. They do a good job at being
dedicated. Wilshon McAlaster and Amaney Jackson are also a big help to the team.
VYPE: What’s the craziest thing someone has said to you on the field during a game? Jaylon Watson - I honestly can’t remember what the craziest thing somebody said to me was. When the pads are on you don’t hear anything but your coaches. Trey Johnson - Some player once told me I could burn their corner on the route every time (laughs). I have been talked to about my speed a lot but nothing major.
Boochie Threatt - Nobody has really told me anything crazy on the field. VYPE: Between you three, who would win in a 40-yard dash?
Trey Johnson - I would win the 40yard dash.
Jaylon Watson – (Laughs) I’d probably take the silver on that. Trey is pretty fast and so is Boochie. That would be a really good race! Boochie Threatt - I think Trey Johnson from Hugo.

OFFENSE
Nine returning starters on offense will help new head coach Dana Bloedel get the program on the right track this season. With good team speed and experience the Buffaloes could be a playoff team, but a lot will depend on the play of the offensive line. Steven Lee (6-2, 262, Sr.) will provide that leadership on the offensive line. With a few younger players stepping into roles up front, Lee will need to lead by example to bring the underclassmen up to speed. Benefiting from that line is a pair of running backs in Wilshon McAlester (5-8, 170, Sr.) and Armaney Jackson (5-8, 175, Sr.). The one-two punch is a threat to take one to the house. VYPE Top 100 selectee Trey Johnson (6-1, 190, Sr.) will start at wide out with Arkyl
Brown (6-3, 200, Sr.). Johnson and Brown are big receivers who know how to go up and fight for the ball. Coach Bloedel is optimistic about the upcoming season, DEFENSE
Johnson will stay on the field at the corner position as will McAlester who starts at linebacker. Junior Reed Wallace (6-2, 215) and B.J. McCloure (5-10, 190, Sr.) round out a talented linebacker squad. Wallace and McCloure are two physical players and when you combined that with the speed of McAlester you have a salty hit squad at linebacker. Battling in the trenches is big man Da-Da King (6-2, 250, Jr.). King looks to pressure the quarterback and stuff the run. With 10 returning starters on defense the Buffaloes appear

OFFENSE
After spending the past seven years as part of the Bulldogs’ program, Chad Endsley takes over as head coach with six starters returning. The strength of this year’s team will be the running game as Shawn Moore (6-0, 230, Sr.) returns to action after missing last season to join Ian Nelson (5-9, 170, Sr.), who totaled 815 yards in 2012, and Antwan Moore (5-10, 210, Sr.), who amassed 610 yards on the turf, in the backfield. Last year’s leading receiver, Ashton Keeton (5-10, 170, Sr.) who totals 415 yards,
returns to the lineup. Jarrin McKinney (5-10, 160, So.) will get the nod at center. DEFENSE
The Orange and Black Express welcomes the return of eight starters on defense including linebackers Devin Atteberry (6-0, 190, Sr.), who recorded 66 tackles last season, and Jarrin McKinney, who impressed opponents by making 56 stops as a freshman a year ago. The 4-3 defensive alignment that plays with a physical and aggressive mentality, gains additional prowess as Shawn
to be one of the top returning teams in the district, but with Vian and Hartshorne on the schedule no one is just giving away playoff spots.

Coach Debo takes over the softball team; brings intensity to the Lady Buffs. Head coach Brandon Debo enters his first season as the Lady Buffs fast-pitch softball coach this year. Coach Debo is no stranger to the Hugo faithful though, having coached the boy’s baseball team for several seasons. The “Thundering Herd” did graduate several key starters from last year’s team, but look to reload with some young talented players. Chelby Kelley, Kaylee Clinton, Kadie Davidson, Breanna Carswell, Lauren Compton and Jacey Finch are all sophomores who coach Debo has high expectations for this season. Junior Kamri Loftin will play second base while senior Sarah Simpson will take the circle. Fellow seniors Taylor Pence and Peyton Self are slated to play in the outfield. Seniors Maria Anderson and Isis Hill could split time at first base with Carswell seeing some time there as well. Junior Miranda Huskins and freshman Abigail Simpson will shore up the outfield for the Lady Buffs. Overall the team is young, but talented. If coach Debo can get the
girls to buy into the work ethic he brings from the baseball team, the Lady Buffs have a legitimate shot at surprising some good teams this season. Senior Taylor Pence told VYPE, “The best is yet to come. This is what my team prides itself on. We play not for just a past time, we play because this is what we love to do,” Pence said. “Almost every one of our players not only play in season during the school year but play year around with some other form of a travel team. We work as one to achieve something much greater than
ourselves but for something to bring back for our very supportive community. We rely on extreme hustle, great attitude, and our pride we all have rumbling inside us!” And it’s that attitude that is carrying the team this season according to Pence. “We have five seniors that have all stepped up as leaders and are all talented athletes. One of which is my pitcher Sarah Simpson. She is one who stepped up to the challenge and has been a big part of keeping us in every game with her High number of strikeouts. Our team is a very young team that consists of several college bound players working hard for their time to come,” said Pence.

Lady Rams Set Their Course For State
Kayli Winship The Rattan Lady Rams and head coach Paul Watts always talk about goals early in the season. Despite losing several key members of the 2012 squad to graduation Watts says the goals for this year are still the same. “They aren’t really any different this year. We want to get to the state tournament because once you get there anything can happen and we want to be a lot better at the end of the year than we are when we start; we feel like if we accomplish the second part of that goal then the first part will take care of itself,” Watts said. outfielders in Brenna House and Kayli Winship who will need to step up especially on the offensive side of things if the Lady Rams hope to make it back to the state tournament. “Both Brenna and Kayli are left-handed outfielders that need to fill some gaps for us in our lineup,” Watts said. Sophomore second baseman Ashton Birchfield also garnered high praise from Watts. “She is the fastest girl I’ve ever coached and the fastest girl I have seen anywhere in a long time. She is a switch hitter who understands the game well and is just super quick,” Watts said. In softball though everything

Blankson isn’t the only member of this year’s squad that will be in a new spot however. In fact only Birchfield will be at the same spot as she was in 2012. “This is probably the most athletic bunch of girls I’ve ever had here at Rattan and once we get settled in and get comfortable with pretty much everybody in a new position on the field we will have a chance to be pretty good,” Watts said.
