KYLE MORLEY - McAlester

Integrity means doing the right thing at all times and in all circumstances, whether or not anyone is watching. It takes having the courage to do the right thing, no matter what the consequences will be. Building a reputation of integrity takes years, but it takes only a second to lose. Every day’s game plan is filled Xs and Os…but winning game plans are achieved by how you take the tendencies and designed plays and make adjustments when something unexpected occurs during the game. In sports, school and life, the choices made each day determine the eventual outcome. Kyle Morley, a senior at McAlester High School knows first hand the value of integrity. “It’s easy to talk about but you only prove the true value of character through your actions,” said Morley. “Kyle does things the right way,” confirmed Bryan Pratt, head football coach at McAlester. “No matter whether he’s in football or walking the halls at school or in our community, his character never changes. His commitment is 100% in everything he does.”

“I learned it from the examples set by my mom and dad (Ralph and Crystal),” admits Morley. “By their actions, I learned the importance of helping others and giving everything you have every day.” A three-sport athlete, vice-president of the McAlester FFA and a member of the National Honor Society, Morley is in the running to be valedictorian of the class of 2015. Yet, the reward of helping others is what the senior at McAlester High School values most. “You earn respect by your actions of service,” said Morley, “and that’s achieved by helping others first.” “The one thing you know about Kyle is that he’s not worried about himself,” said Pratt. “He’s willing to sacrifice his own glory just to make things better for other people. He’s the true definition of being unselfish.” Volunteering his time at the Shared Blessings Back to School event, working with Meals on Wheels and the local Soup Kitchen are situations where Morley admits he gets his rewards. “Handing out the back packs at Shared Blessings and just having fun with the little kids is awesome,” said Morley. “The same goes for giving food to needy families. You can feel the emotion and their appreciation when you look into their eyes. You leave with a feeling of gratitude and appreciation. Hopefully you’ve made their day better.” “Kyle does all the little things that are needed to be successful,” said Pratt. “His actions are the ultimate reflection of what being a McAlester Buffalo is all about.” As a senior entering his final season of football with future plans to pursue an engineering degree in college, Morley wants to leave his mark. “I believe you need to leave things in better shape than you found it,” Morley confirmed. “Whether that’s in sports, at school or our community, I know I have my opportunities because of the commitment and sacrifice of others. I want to be sure that I do my part to make things better too.” Doing what is right and letting the consequences follow are part of a winning game plan. And while success will come and go, integrity is forever. And, the actions of Kyle Morley are proof that those words are defined through the example he lives everyday.

During the past five seasons, winning football games has become more than an expectation for the McAlester Buffaloes. It’s become the way of life. Sporting a 52-12 record including a trip to the Class 5A state finals in 2013, the Buffaloes remain hungry for more success this year. “Just like every year, we go into the season trying to be better than we were the year before,” confirmed head coach Bryan Pratt. “And, when you get so close VYPEOK.COM

Dalton Wood to winning the state championship which is your ultimate goal, you don’t let up any preparing for the next season, trying to find your weaknesses so that you can come home with the gold ball instead of the silver one. That trophy sets in our coaches’ office as a daily reminder that’s not the color trophy we want and reminds the coaches and players of the little things you have to do in order to win the state championship.” Despite the loss of seasoned veterans to graduation, Pratt and the Buffaloes remain confident with a simple approach, “WE WILL” in 2014. McAlester’s high-powered offense that last year that scored 40-plus points in 12 of 14 contests maintains the playmakers for another productive season. “We’ll be a different type of offensive team with more of a pounding run game while still throwing the football, said Pratt. “Don’t get me wrong, this offense can be very explosive.” Leading the cause for optimism will be the play of quarterback Dalton Wood (6-3, 235, Sr.). The dual-threat signal caller, Wood completed 110-204 passes totaling 23 touchdowns while rushing for 1,095 yards and 18 touchdowns in 2013. Mason Ross (6-1, 190, So.) will add depth at quarterback. “Dalton is a big time player,” said Pratt, “not only can he throw the ball with touch; he’s also physical running the football.” Adding highlight reel moments for the Buffs in 2014 will be the play of

Kevin Brown 1995 Lawson Giddings 1997 Brandon Keith 2002 Justin Klusak 2007 Adam Boyd 2011 Tony Kiefer 2011 Devin Rolan 2012 Caden Pratt 2013 Mason Bumphus 2013 *Oklahoman All-State Selections

newcomer Cameron Hunter, a 5-8 150 pound senior move-in from Melissa Texas, where he totaled more that 800 yards at wide receiver. “Cam’s probably the best athlete on the football team,” smiled Pratt, “and he is going to be that definite impact player we need on offense and defense.” Graduation left spots to be filled at receiver and Pratt is confident this year’s group has playmaking skills. Described as athletic and capable of big time plays, Zach Baugh (5-10, 160, Sr.) will combine with Andrew McBride (5-8, 150, Jr.), to bring added speed on the boundary along with Brayden Klusak (6-2, 185, So.). Keaton Slater (6-4, 240, Sr.) returns at tight end giving a big target with sure hands for Wood. Rhyln Stephens (5-10, 165, Sr.) takes over as the running back in McAlester’s spread attack while Riley Smith (5-

Zach Baugh

Matt Ferrell

10, 230 Sr.) brings a championship mentality to the fullback position. “Rhyln got carries last year at running back and played in the secondary,” Pratt said. “He’s an explosive player that we expect to make big time plays.” The size and experience of the offensive front is another reason for high expectations as the Buffs will rely upon the senior leadership of three year starter Matt Ferrell (6-0, 240, Sr.) along with juniors Austin Hilton (6-1, 160, Jr.) and Payton Haynes (6-0, 250, Jr.). Added muscle in the trench will come from Cody Cozad (6-0, 260, Sr.). The prowess of the Buffaloes defensive unit will no doubt be a plus for McAlester’s expectation of winning the Class 5A crown. “We’re strong up front,” praised Pratt, “our defensive line and the entire group of linebackers are as good as we’ve had here in a while. We feel very confident that we can win a game by scoring 21 points versus last year where we felt like we had to put up a lot of points on the scoreboard.” The juggernaut of the Buffaloes defense will be senior nose guard Riley Smith, who recorded 107 stops including 10

Riley Smith

sacks and three fumble recoveries last season. “Riley is the most dominant high school player I’ve been around in a while,” Pratt notes. “His strength plus center of balance and aggressive nature requires double teams to try to slow him down. He’ll run down a sweep from nose guard as well as clog the middle.” Graham Eaton (6-1, 220, So.) will also bring proven talent to the defensive front along with the experience of Ferrell and Josh Dungan (6-1, 225, Sr.). The linebacker crew will once again showcase the skills of Robbie Stephens (5-10, 170 Sr.) whose 120 tackles topped the team charts in 2013. Three year starter Keaton Slater, who charted 61 tackles last year, Kyle Morley (6-0, 175, Sr.) plus Payton Haynes, Dalton Wood and Victor Mills (6-1, 185, Sr.) give the McAlester coach confidence defending the run as well as covering the pass. “This group is experienced and swarms to the football with a physical mindset, said Pratt. While only one starter returns to the secondary, playmaking talents will again wear the black and gold. Rhyln Stephens, who snared four interceptions while recording 80 tackles will be joined Taylor Mullins (5-10, 160, Sr.) and Wes Countz (5-8,

160, So.) in Friday night action at safety while Cameron Hunter, Andrew McBride, Brayden Klusak and Michael Mines (5-9, 150, Sr.) will share time at cornerback. While the names might not be as familiar to the Buffalo nation, Pratt is confident fans will have plenty to cheer about. “As a staff and a football team, we’ve raised the bar to a higher level,” said Pratt. “And this year’s senior class, which includes 22 players, has one thing left and that’s win it all. Our community is behind us 100%. Their support at home and away is an added advantage.” The 52 victories during the past five seasons are proof the Buffaloes know a lot about winning football games and developing not just a belief but an expectation for success. “Our approach is WE WILL,” said Pratt while pointing to the team motto. “Our players, coaches and fans expect us to win. And ever since the final seconds of the championship game last year, we’ve focused on continuing to raise the bar. We’re focused on trading the silver for a gold ball this year.”

Savanna Bulldogs COACH: James Bond ENROLLMENT: 153 Last 5 Years: 2009 - 7-4 2010 - 6-4 2011 - 7-4 2012 - 9-2 2013 - 9-2 Schedule: Sept. 5 – at Antlers Sept. 12 – vs. Coalgate Sept. 19 – at Wilburton Sept. 26 – at Talihina Oct. 3 – vs. Henryetta Oct. 10 – vs. Warner Oct. 16 – at Quinton Oct. 24 – vs. Porter Oct. 31 – at Central Sallisaw Nov. 7 – vs. Gore OFFENSE On the heels of back-to-back nine win campaigns, the Bulldogs are eager to return to the Class A playoffs with a spread-style offense including seven starters. Chase Woods (511, 175, Sr.), who rushed for 705 yards last season, has the speed and elusive abilities to score from anywhere on the field. Defined by head coach James Bond as a strong and quick runner that looks to make a big hit block, Ryan Weeks (5-11, 210, Sr.) brings power to the party. Another choice for running game success will be Corey Vaughn (5-10, 185, Jr.) who delivers a blue collar approach. Seth Burke (5-10, 185, Sr.), who has engineered Savanna’s offense to 25 wins the last three seasons, returns at quarterback and will have Jimmy Sparks (5-9, 165, Sr.) as one of his primary receivers after last year grabbing 15 receptions for 450 yards. “With Burke at quarterback, we can still use the quick passing game to support our running attack,” said Bond. “Woods and Weeks are a strong combination of power and speed we rely upon with the running game.” A key for success of the offense will be the development of the offensive line that includes a four year starter Tanner Brown (6-4, 230, Sr.) that sets the edge on the line of scrimmage along with two-year veteran Jake Murdaugh (5-9, 155, Sr.). DEFENSE The Bulldogs bite is just as loud as its bark defensively with six returning starters. A pair of four year starters, Weeks and Burke brings speed and physical style play at linebacker in Savanna’s 3-4 formation along with Vaughn and Murdaugh. Daytona Trammell (5-11, 180, Sr.) has a quick first step to initiate contact on the defensive front and control the line of scrimmage. The Bulldogs’ scheme gives strong safety Tyler Smith (510, 155, Sr.) the opportunity to roam side to side on a seek and destroy mission against the run or pass. Bond has plenty of confidence in the play of the secondary with Sparks at free safety where the skillful

defender has intercepted six passes each of the past three seasons. “This is our biggest senior class,” said Bond referencing the ability and experience of the 2014 roster, “and they play hard on every snap. We expect more than just another playoff appearance. If we stay healthy and with a little luck, this year will be lots of fun.”

Quinton Savages

COACH: JEREMY REEDER ENROLLMENT: 150 Last 5 Years: 2009 - 5-5 2010 - 8-3 2011 - 3-6 2012 - 3-7 2013 - 6-5 Schedule:

Quinton Savages Sept. 5 – at Konawa Sept. 12 – vs. Wilburton Sept. 19 – at Pocola Sept. 26 – vs. Gore Oct. 3 – at Central Sallisaw Oct. 10 – at Porter Oct. 16 – vs. Savanna Oct. 24 – at Talihina Oct. 30 – vs. Hilldale JV Nov. 7 – vs. Warner OFFENSE The return road to success continues for the Savages after a Class A playoff invitation in 2013. Jeremy Reeder enters his second season at the helm with six starters returning to the offensive unit. Kirby Needham (5-9, 165, Sr.), who ran for 840 yards last season will be back giving the Savages options to maximize Needham’s skills. “Kirby is an all purpose player, said Needham, “the kind of guy that will make something out of nothing.” Three year starter Preston Lemons (5-8, 145, Sr.), who was injured midseason in 2013, will return to the Savages backfield adding experience and playmaking threats to score. Peyton Knell (6-3, 180, Jr.) passed for 758 yards a year ago and will get the starting nod at quarterback and will look for Joseph Perez (6-0, 145, Jr.) to make catches at receiver. Perez also adds an “extra point” to the Savages scoring with his kicking abilities. While the offensive line will be young, experience and ability is there with Dylan Ford (6-4, 300, So.) returning to create havoc in the trench. “This is the second year for the kids in this offense,” notes Reeder, “and that will give us more options with our motion and different formations.” DEFENSE The experience for Quinton’s 4-4 defense will be in the secondary where Peyton Knell, who totaled 62

stops last year, joins Joseph Perez. After leading the Savages tackle numbers with 126 including 2 sacks and 2 interceptions, Jack Lemons (5-10, 175, Sr.) brings a seek and destroy approach to his play at linebacker. Chad Bush (5-10, 190 Sr.), who recorded 94 tackles in 2013, along with Kirby Needham create an athletic and aggressive linebacker unit. Our defensive front will include some youth,” said Reeder. “The back seven will be a key for our success while the front guys settle into the spots.” The experience of the playoffs last year has Reeder’s team hungry to return. “We’ve got some proven playmakers and some young guys with talent,” said Reeder, “but if we stay health, we have a chance at a pretty good year.”

Talihina Golden Tigers

COACH: Kelly Gravitt ENROLLMENT: 179 Last 5 Years: 2009 - 12-1 2010 - 11-1 2011 - 5-5 2012 - 11-2 2013 - 13-1 Schedule:: Sept. 5 – at Wilburton Sept. 12 – vs. Antlers Sept. 19 – at Christian Heritage Sept. 26 – vs. Savanna Oct. 3 – at Gore Oct. 10 – OPEN Oct. 16 – at Warner Oct. 24 – vs. Quinton Oct. 31 – at Porter OFFENSE The more things change, the more they stay the same…words that ring true when talking Golden Tigers football. Coach Kelly Gravitt welcomes back 8 starters on offense from last year’s Class A state semifinals team that scorched opponents for 43.1 points per contest. Alan Lockhart (6-3, 195, Sr.) returns for his second season at quarterback after last year totaling over 3,300 yards offense. Lockhart passed for 22 touchdowns while throwing just 4 interceptions while rushing for 28 touchdowns. “Alan has all the tools to run our offense,” said Gravitt. “His speed and vision combined with arm strength makes him a threat running and passing the football from our no-huddle offense.” Adding to the firepower of the read-option offense will be running back Bryar Humphreys (6-1, 175, Sr.) who averaged 8.3 yards per carry plus 11 touchdowns along with Marcus Baker (5-11, 205, Sr.). A fourth playmaker will be Christian McClain (5-11, 190, Sr.), who will be the “goto-guy” at receiver after last year making 35 receptions and scoring 5 touchdowns. Logan Hillebrand (63, 250, Sr.) and Tucker Trowbridge (5-10, 175, Sr.) will anchor the front line along with K.J. Morris (6-3, 230, Jr.), Trey Hawkins (6-3, 225, Jr.) and

Domnick Shedd (5-10, 195, So.). “We’re going to spread the field and let the skill guys make plays 1-on-1 in space,” smiled Gravitt, who enters his ninth season at the helm. DEFENSE With nine starters returning to the Black & Gold 4-3 alignment, Talihina will again be an aggressive unit after last season giving up just 13 points per game. “This group of kids has started every game since they were freshmen because they play physical on every snap,” confirmed Gravitt. “Sideline to sideline, they fly to the football looking for someone to hit.” The Tigers return all three linebackers including Ty Trowbridge, Logan Hillebrand and Marcus Baker. “Our defensive scheme requires the linebackers to make plays and all three guys are capable of stopping the run as well as defending the pass.” Tucker Trowbridge, who recorded 10 sacks last season, will anchor the four man front along with Trey Hawkins, Domnick Shedd, K.J. Morris, Caleb Stowell (5-9, 170, Sr.), Eric Smith (5-9, 175, Jr.) and Carter Cochran (5-9, 170, Jr.). Lockhart and Humphreys, who combined for nine interceptions last season return to the secondary unit. “With the experience and talent we return at most positions, I’m excited about the upcoming season,” said Gravitt.

Haileyville Warriors

COACH: DENNIS FORD ENROLLMENT: 121 Last 5 Years: 2009 - 4-5 2010 - 1-9 2011 - 1-8 2012 - 0-9 2013 - 0-10 Schedule:: Sept. 5 – at Depew Sept. 12 – vs. Canadian Sept. 19 – at Keota Sept. 26 – vs. Caddo Oct. 3 – at Porum Oct. 10 – vs. Gans Oct. 16 – at Arkoma Oct. 24 – vs. Dewar Oct. 31 – vs. Wetumka Nov. 7 – at Weleetka

OFFENSE The realignment of high school football has given the Warriors a new road map to success with the move to 8-man football in 2014. With 8 starters returning, head coach Dennis Ford, is extremely optimistic about the upcoming season. “It’s really good for us,” admits Ford with a smile. “Just in numbers alone, the move allows us to compete with schools our size.” Seth Davidson (5-9, 165, So.) will again handle the quarterback duties while Reco Sweet (6-1, 205, Jr.) and Matt Brewer (5-10, 165, So.) deliver a 1-2 punch at tailback in the Warriors’ I-formation. Mark Cobey (5-10, 185, Jr.) will be at fullback. “Sweet and Brewer are the two fastest kids on the squad,” said Ford. “Matt is a scatback type while Reco

brings power plus quickness.” Jordan Smith (6-0, 200, Jr.) and Ty Magruder (5-11, 170, Jr.) will return experience for the Warriors at wide receiver. The offensive line features the play of Bryer Stites (6-8, 315, Sr.), who Ford defines as big and agile, along with Lyndon Armstrong (5-9, 185, Sr.), Matt Gee (5-10, 195, Jr.) and Keifer Holloway (5-10, 220, So.).

DEFENSE With eight players with starting experience, Haileyville’s 3-2-3 alignment includes quickness and physical nature to the lineup as the 6-8 Stites plugs the middle at nose guard along with Gee and Bruner at defensive end. Tyler Mann (5-10, 170, Fr.) brings a hard nose attitude to linebacker along with Armstrong and Sweet. The secondary gains the experience play of Davidson, Jordan Smith and Magruder plus the addition of Wesley Smith (5-7, 140, So.). While the move to district B-4 is a positive change, Ford is aware of the level of competition on the schedule. “Keota, Dewar, Wetumka and Weleetka are always in the playoff picture,” said Ford. “We need a strong start to the season and then keep the ball rolling.”

COACH: Mike Terney ENROLLMENT: 140 Last 5 Years: 2009 - 5-4 2010 - 3-7 2011 - 3-7 2012 - 5-5 2013 - 1-7 Schedule:: Sept. 5 – vs. Strother Sept. 12 – at Haileyville Sept. 19 – vs. Caddo Sept. 26 – at Gans Oct. 3 – vs. Dewar

OFFENSE Canadian makes the move to Class B football season for 2014. The Cougars growl will be young and loud as only four starters return from last season. Four year starter Jacob Motley (5-8. 175, Sr.) moves to center and Nick Christian (6-1,185, Sr.) returns to the guard position. A pair of wide receivers from last season will move to key positions as Chance Tanner (5-11, 150, So.) takes over at tailback while Taylor Koedyker (5-8, 140, Sr.) directs the 1-back veer offense at quarterback. “Taylor was our backup quarterback last year and knows the offense,” said head coach Mike Terney, “and Chance has the quickness to be effective running the ball.” D.J. Green (5-7, 185, Jr.) will be the primary target for Koedyker at tight end when the Cougars throw the ball. DEFENSE The claw of the Cougars 3-2 defensive scheme will rely upon the strength and contain skills of Christian and Green at end with Motley, who Terney says is the strongest player on the team, in the middle linebacker to solidify the inside play. Pass coverage will rely upon the speed and reactions of Tanner and Koedyker in the secondary. “This is the youngest squad I’ve coached in 35 years,” said Terney, who enters his sixth campaign at Canadian. “The young guys are showing me they want to get the job done.”

Lady Buffs Go Back to the Basics on the base path, another reason for the demand for conditioning where the speed of Webster, Garner and Howard fill the 1-2-3 spots in the batting order.

“I told the girls if you’re on first and it’s a hit, you should end up at third,” confirmed Cox. “And for sure, if you’re at second and it’s a hit, its green light all the way to home plate to score.”

Hard Work and Dedication Create Opportunities for McAlester Fastpitch Softball When new head coach Kelleya Cox met the members of the McAlester fastpitch softball team for the first time, she was impressed by the willingness of her players to do the little things necessary to be successful.

After a five year run at Dale (1998-2003) where she won a state title and 10 seasons at Checotah where the Lady Wildcats also made a state tournament appearance, Cox joins the McAlester program that will go in search of a trip to the Class 5A state tournament for the first time since 2011. “I told the girls, I’m old school,” said Cox, a 15 year veteran. “Conditioning, defense and hard work make the difference in winning and losing. And, throughout the summer and now as the season begins, they’ve blown me away with their commitment to do the little things that make champions.” Cox’s belief of conditioning is evident and members of the 2014 Lady Buffs team have used physical conditioning to strengthen their mental approach to create winning opportunities.

“When your body gets tired you also lose your mental focus,” said Cox. “And, these girls have taken every challenge I’ve given them to be ready for every situation.” The Lady Buffs are taking a defensive approach to their play in the field.

“I tell the kids, on the infield if the ball gets past you it’s got a chance to go all the way to the outfield wall,” noted Cox. “So we stress diving bodies to keep the ball on the dirt. And now, you can see their confidence and that they want the ball hit their way.”

Three seniors will join three underclassmen to create the Lady Buffs infield lineup where team captain Vhitney Garner, a senior, leads the rally cry at second base. “She has all the tools you want,” said Cox. “Defensively, Vhitney is solid in keeping the ball in front, turning double plays. At the

plate she can get the hit when you need it, bunt to move a runner or create a base hit with the slap.”

Like Garner, Cox is complimentary of the play and leadership of two other seniors. Kylie Impson will handle the hot corner at third base while Heather Morgano is a force behind the plate at catcher.

“Kylie’s pretty much like a wall, you can’t get anything past her at third,” said Cox, “and Heather is going to block any ball in the dirt. Plus, now she’s racing down the line every time a ball is hit creating a second line of defense.” The leadership of the three seniors is creating similar play among the younger players as well.

“Taylor Jones is becoming a vacuum at shortstop knocking down hot shots off the bat,” said Cox. “Her play is making it tough to get the ball through the left side. And, Bryn Cable, who is just a freshman, takes advantage of her height to stretch out or leap high to grab any throw.” The solid infield defense is also bolstering the confidence of sophomore Adisyn Webster, who returns to the circle after pitching 49 plus inning a year ago.

“She can throw strikes as well as hit her spots with a change up,” said Cox. “I’m also impressed by her glove play defensively. It’s a lot of pressure on a young player in the circle, but when I asked Adisyn if she wanted that responsibility, she grabbed the ball out of my hand and said let’s go.”

With the combination of the basics including conditioning and defense, expectations for the Lady Buffs are that extra efforts will result in an ultimate payoff. McAlester’s fall schedule includes a challenging district lineup including Carl Albert, Shawnee, Bishop Kelley, Durant, Edison and Tulsa Memorial.

“Our reward is winning,” said Cox. “And I’m so proud of the way these girls are working endlessly to create their opportunities. Every one of my players has proved to me they understand that it takes hard work to get their chance to go back to the state tournament.” Schedule: 8/11 WILBURTON AWAY 8/12 SALLISAW HOME 8/14 SHAWNEE* AWAY 8/16 CARL ALBERT* HOME 8/18 SPIRO HOME 8/19 TULSA EDISON* HOME 8/21 WILBURTON TOURNEY AWAY 8/25 WILBURTON HOME 8/26 DURANT* AWAY 8/30 TULSA MEMORIAL* HOME 9/2 SAVANNA HOME 9/4-6 COWETA-CLAREMORE TOURNEY AWAY 9/8 TULSA EDISON* AWAY 9/9 DURANT* HOME 9/11-13 DURANT TOURNAMENT AWAY 9/16 SAVANNA AWAY 9/18 BISHOP KELLEY* AWAY 9/19 SHAWNEE* HOME 9/23 SALLISAW AWAY 9/27 GUTHRIE* AWAY 9/29 BISHOP KELLEY* HOME

The belief that defense first wins championships is equally evident in the Lady Buffs outfield as Brynn Vaughn returns in centerfield and freshman Taryn Howard is helping to create a “no-fly zone” in leftfield. “Taryn got my attention this summer when she laid out for a fly ball in the gap ESPN style. With that type of effort defensively and her ability to put the ball in play at the plate, she’s a big plus for us.” Offensively, Cox’s approach is aggressive

atoka wampus cats

OFFENSE Rebuilding will definitely be the key word for the Wampus Cats as they looked to turn around their fortunes after a tumultuous 2013 campaign that was filled with adversity. New head coach Lloyd Smith takes over the helm after spending three seasons at Northwest Classen, where he turned around the Knights, following 20 years of coaching on the gridiron in Texas. “I’m excited about the upcoming season,” he said. “The kids are ready to get started and get the bad taste out of their mouths and build a foundation.” Look for the offense to be multiple and take advantage of their strength and athleticism. Leading that group will be quarterback Jalen Harris (5-9, 165, Sr.), who starred for Coach Smith during his sophomore season at Northwest Classen before moving, and who he calls a great leader on the field. Joining Harris will be playmaker Houston Bowen (6-0,

175, Jr.) out of the backfield while linemen James Lee (6-3, 240, Jr.) and Zack Sanders (5-10, 185, Sr.) key the charge up front. Smith will rely heavily on building that offensive foundation on the line of scrimmage.

DEFENSE The Wampus Cats will look to improve defensively as well with several returning players that saw action a season ago. Linebacker William Clegg (5-10, 175, Jr.) is expected to be the tackling stalwart along with Houston Bowen (6-0, 175, Jr.) in the secondary. Coach Smith expects a host of underclassmen to step up and make major contributions during the course of the season, but is confident in seeing improvement, especially with the Wampus Cats’ drop to Class 2A. “Davis is always tough but I think we are in a district in which we can be very competitive,” he said. “We just have to bring things together and make it happen.”

Coalgate Wildcats OFFENSE
With a much more experienced nucleus the Coalgate Wildcats take aim on a more successful season in 2014 despite another rugged schedule. Seven starters are back for coach Dustin Newberry’s spread offensive unit. Spurring the attack will be quarterback Colby Jones (5-10, 180, Sr.), who had 1,121 allpurpose yards and eight touchdowns a year ago. The playmaking trio of Dakota Powell (5-11, 160, Jr.), Nate Hardy (5-8, 170, Jr.) and Rob Penney (6-0, 170, Jr.) are expected to be even bigger parts of the offense after emerging as sophomores.

DEFENSE
The Wildcats’ 4-2-5 defensive scheme will rely heavily on the play of linebacker Ricco Bellettini (5-10, 210, Sr.), who notched 65 tackles, including two sacks, and forced three fumbles a year ago. Strength should definitely come up front with a large part of the team’s six returning starters. Logan Layton (5-9, 250, Sr.) is coming off a 52-tackle campaign at defensive tackle while C.J. Cole (6-1, 220, Jr.) added 37 at end with Shelton Nichols (6-0, 300, Sr.) and Jansyn Epworth (510, 190, Sr.) looking to add to their 20 and 14 tackles respectively.

Antlers Bearcats

OFFENSE The foundation for success continues to build for the Bearcats as head coach Kenny Speer enters his second season. Prior to Speer’s arrival, Antlers had won only 1 game in three seasons. “We’re going the right way,” confirmed Speers, we missed out on the playoffs by one game, one play really.” Six starters return surrounded by young underclassmen to provide Antlers with playmaking abilities that will be more run-oriented than last season. Nick Evans (5-9, 155, Jr.) is an explosive running backreceiver combination capable of highlight reel plays. The Bearcats stable of running backs will include a power game with Bryce Carter (6-2, 210, Sr.) plus the added talents of Lucas Austin (5-7, 165, Sr.), Ryan Davis (5-9, 180, Jr.), Dustin Moorehead (6-2, 195, So.) and Ty Bell (5-7, 155, So.). Chris Kilby (5-10, 185, Jr.) takes over at quarterback who Speer applauds for his ability to read opposing secondary coverages and make smart plays. All of the running backs will figure into the passing game along with Conner Copeland (6-1, 180, So.). Dakota Taylor (6-2, 305, Sr.) and Timmy Martin (6-1, 225, Sr.) will be joined by D.J. Wing (5-9, 275, Sr.) in the offensive line that will have added depth with Indy McNutt (6-1, 190, So.), and Drew Crow (5-9, 240, Jr.).

Lucas Austin - Timmy Martin Bryce Carter - Dakota Taylor

DEFENSE Six starters will provide experience to the defensive efforts that Speer is confident will be strong against the run. “It’s an aggressive run to the football bunch of kids that like to hit somebody,” said Speer. The muscle and size of Taylor and Martin along with Tyler Bowman (6-3, 265, Fr.) and Lane Sisco (6-3, 280, Jr.) create a force on the interior while Jake Johnson (6-0, 185, Sr.) and Wyatt Clark (5-10, 185, So.) get the nod at defensive end. The linebacker trio of Davis and Austin return proven experience and will be joined by Mooneyham. Speer has moved physical and aggressive playmaker Carter to free safety to complete the secondary along with Evans, Copeland and Raven Bowden (6-1, 175, So.). “One game at a time is how we get better,” said Speer. “I’m excited that last year’s start continues to build the passion for winning this season. Together, young and upperclassmen alike, we can.” AUGUST 2014

Alec Rudolf OFFENSE
With a wealth of returning experience in tow the Durant Lions will look to take the next step and return to the playoffs after last year’s tough 2-8 finish. Coach Byron Cordell’s crew notched one of the best offensive campaigns in school history a season ago, shattering all school passing and receiving records. Becoming more versatile will be vital to the team’s success while finding a replacement for 5A All Star quarterback Zac Cater and his 2,765 passing yards, 65 percent completions and 30 touchdowns through the air. The top candidates could be Layton Tubbs (6-3, 205, Jr.) and Tyler Stovall (5-9, 160, Jr.), who each saw limited time in that capacity while starting at tight end and wide receiver in 2013. Tubbs posted 378 all-purpose yards and seven touchdowns while Stovall added 532 all-purpose yards and four scores. Playmaker Skye Lowe (5-9, 160, Jr.) also returns to spark the receiving unit after a 76-catch, 1001-yard season that included eight touchdowns. The Lions have a veteran core up front

to clear the way with Alec Rudolf (6-1, 275, Sr.), Jacob Pardue (6-0, 210, Jr.) and Blaise Gorges (6-2, 225, Sr.). Harrison Wood (5-9, 205, Sr.) has been a two-year starter on the offensive line but could see time this year as a bruising runner out of the backfield. DEFENSE A solid core returns on the defensive side of the ball that will look to shore up a unit that yielded 39 points and 440 yards per game last year. New defensive coordinator Randy Matthews will build around a strong core of linebackers Jakob Bradford (6-2, 205, Sr.) and Layton Tubbs (6-3, 205, Jr.), the team’s top two tacklers in 2013. Bradford led the team with 85 tackles, including 22 for losses, six sacks and three fumble recoveries. Tubbs added 73 stops, 12 for losses and also intercepted a pass. Blaise Gorges (6-2, 225, Sr.) is a terror at defensive end where he is coming off a 74-tackle campaign, including 21 of which were behind the line of scrimmage. Cooper Webb (5-10, 170, Sr.), Tyler Stovall (5-9, 160, Jr.), Trey Hunt (6-1, 170, Sr.) and Spencer Tidwell (5-8, 165, Sr.) all picked up valuable experience in the secondary a season ago. Webb posted 55 tackles while Stovall added 37 and Tidwell had 33.

ago.

A year ago the Durant Lady Lions looked to be on the verge of a return to the state softball tournament as one of eight regional tournament hosts statewide in Class 5A. The youth-laden squad came up just shy however, finishing runner-up to Collinsville.

Now with a full year of experience under their belts and multiple weapons, coach Aaron Mullens’ squad should be one of the early favorites to take that next step and reach the state event. Seniors Alexa Richards and Kylie Manning will anchor this season’s unit, looking to build onto their 24-16 record of a season

“Alexa and Kylie are both extremely versatile and have been with me for five years,” Mullens said. “They were with me in junior high as well. Kylie will play in the outfield and at third base and Alexa will likely split time between second base and catcher. They are both outstanding leaders and mainstays in our lineup.”

While the Lady Lions return all but one player from last year they will still field a very young lineup. In addition to the two seniors they have seven juniors, five sophomores and 14 freshmen. “We definitely have some depth and competition for playing time,” Mullens added. “We have four or five that will be able to pitch as well. That just pushes everybody and should make us better.”

Manning returns with a .450 batting average, while notching a team-best 45 hits. She posted nine doubles, two triples, a home run and drove in 22 runs. Richards will look to add to her .340 batting average that included five doubles, two triples and 17 RBI. The squad’s leading hitter and top run producer is also back in sophomore Destinee Lewis, who exploded on the scene last year with a .453 average, seven doubles, one triple, nine home runs and 30 runs batted in.

Other regulars in the lineup back this year are Macy Powell, Breanna Simmons,

Sidney Hampton, Riley Andis, Kylie Hobbs and Madison Williams. Powell hit .350 a year ago, led the squad in doubles with 12 and was second with 29 RBI. Simmons batted .330 with eight doubles and 19 batted in, Hampton hit .327 with seven doubles and 14 ribbies, Hobbs was at .317 with six doubles, Williamson hit .314 and Andis batted .266 but contributed nine doubles and 22 RBI. Logan Hime also returns after seeing limited varsity action a season ago but hit .417 in her opportunities.

Hampton was the ace of the pitching staff as a freshman and is expected to improve on her 11-7 record and three saves in which she sported a 2.63 ERA with 107 strikeouts. Kylie Williams also toed the rubber extensively last season with a 10-5 record, 3.51 earned run average and 62 strikeouts.

A handful of talented freshmen could also contribute in key roles during the course of the season. Those include Taylor Russell, Shayla Harper, Hannah Hime and Erica Martin.

While powerhouse Carl Albert has to be the district favorite going in, Mullens feels his club should be primed to challenge for one of the all-important top two spots in the district and a regional host position for the second year in a row.

Quick Hits: The Savages enter 2014 on a nine-game losing streak. Broken Bow finished 2013 with its lowest regular season win total since 1982

Broken Bow continues to dominate the McCurtain County War, one of the state’s fiercest rivalries. The Savages have won the last 14 meetings with the Idabel Warriors. New district rival Metro Christian is no stranger to Broken Bow. The teams have played in the non-district portion of the schedule the past six years. Metro has won 4 of those 6 meetings. OFFENSE Scott Pratt enters his third season as head coach for the Savages, and this season he is looking for a big turnaround. “We are very excited about our 2014 season, we had an outstanding spring and our players and coaches have worked tirelessly to get our program back to top of Class 4A, “ states Pratt. Eight starters return to the Multiple I formation offense. Leading the way is Jaylon Watson (6-1, 225, Sr.), who had 403 yards rushing with five touchdowns in an injury- shortened 2013 season. “Jaylon, who already has D-I offers, is a very explosive player, who brings a lot of emotion to the field”, remarked Pratt. In addition to Watson in the backfield, Keyshawn Butler (5-8, 170, So.) will bring a 1-2 punch to the offense. Butler had 435 yards rushing and three touchdowns, also in an injury-shortened season. Both will put pressure on opposing defenses. The quarterback position returns two players with starting experience, Jake Callaham (5-8, 175, Sr.), who is returning from a season-ending collarbone injury, and Dalton Weaver (6-3, 220, Sr.). The decision on who the starter will be has yet to be determined. “Jake’s strength is his ability to run, he’s smart, tough and hard to tackle. Dalton is big, strong and athletic. His arm strength and his ability to run are in his favor,” explained Pratt. Sophomore Konner Neal (6-1, 160) will also be in the mix. The offensive line returns four starters, A.J. Powell (5-10, 245, Sr.), Stefan Pogue (6-2, 285, Sr.), Roberto Silva, (6-2, 240, So.) and Tyrek Burris (6-0, 245). The strength of the team is in the receiving corp. Daekwon Cubit (6-3,175, Sr.) is a tall and athletic weapon on the edge. Jordan Williston (6-2, 160, Jr.), who is the 4A high jump State Champion, Juan Lewis (6-1, 170, Jr.), Hayden George (5-9, 165, Jr.) and J.J. Harris (6-1, 165, Fr.) will all catch their share of passes this fall.

Jaylon Watson DEFENSE The Savages football philosophy is based on being a defensive powerhouse. Returning seven starters the 4-2-5 defense will be more physical this season. It all starts with Watson, who is returning to the defensive end position. Lyons will play the strong side. Axl Ebahotubbi and Chet Taylor will compete for playing time. Tyler Scott (5-7, 200, Jr.) a quick and explosive nose guard will draw double teams from the opposing offensive linemen. Two linebackers, Kayson and Keithan Meddock, bring experience to the defense. Look for Josh Anna (5-10, 215, Jr.) and Blade Tidwell (5-10, 195, Jr.) to compete for the final spot. In the secondary Cubit and Williston will hold down the corner spot. The safety position will be between Callaham, Butler, Kiowan Jones (5-8, 150, Jr.), and Neal. Look for major improvement in the Savages record this season, which they have dedicated to teammate Austin Price, who was killed in a car wreck on the first day of spring practice. “Austin was a great young man that everyone loved”, says Pratt.

Broken Bow and Idabel Softball Teams Both Have High Hopes or getting behind the plate as the team’s catcher and also carries a big stick in the Broken Bow offense. Scott, who Hill said has really improved her offense, is the team’s leader and will start at first base. Idabel Softball

Stephanie Armstrong takes over the head coaching duties for Idabel softball this year and said her team is focusing on achieving some big things this year.

Broken Bow Softball Last season the Broken Bow softball team finished the year 33-8 but were bounced in the regional tournament after back-to-back heartbreaking losses to Tecumseh and Mt. Saint Mary respectively. Those losses left a bad taste in the mouths of the Lady Savages and according to head coach Chris Hill who said her team has adopted the motto “unfinished business” this year.

Leading the charge for the Lady Savages in the circle this year will be junior Shalee Brantley. When she isn’t pitching Brantley will start at shortstop but Broken Bow fans should expect Brantley to handle the bulk of the pitching duties. Fellow junior Dawson Jordan will handle the catching duties for the Lady Savages and hit in the four-hole powering the Broken Bow offense. Other key contributors this year will be sophomore Michaela Richbourg and senior Hanna Scott. Richbourg is a utility type player capable of playing shortstop, third base

“Probably the main goal this group of seniors is setting is to make it out of districts then go as deep as possible in the playoffs,” Armstrong said. “Other than that we just want to stay positive, stay focused and really improve on our team unity this year.” Everything starts in the circle for the Lady Warriors and that is where Idabel fans can find strikeout artist Abbie Lancaster. Armstrong said that Lancaster is “very versatile and probably the best pitcher in the county.”

Other key players for the Lady Warriors according to Armstrong will include third baseman Keyia Green, first baseman Samantha Wolf, center fielder MarQuisha Vann and utility type player Tahjane’ Harris. Green and Vann both possess great speed while Wolf will provide a big bat in the middle of the Idabel lineup and Harris gives the team a boost with her height and athleticism ei

ThuWong Haney - Broken Bow This month’s selection for “Parent Of the Month” goes to a dad who goes above and beyond, not only for his own kids but also for many other Broken Bow student–athletes.

Thuwong Haney, better known as “Tojo” is that dad. He and his wife Tonya have four kids: Corey, a University of Tulsa Golden Hurricane football player, Desmond, a sophomore four-sport athlete at Broken Bow High, Trini-Tee, a freshman softball, basketball and track athlete for the Lady Savages, and Tyquan a 6th grader who is also involved in athletics. Tojo works for Broken Bow Schools, but volunteers as the Assistant Middle School girl’s softball coach. He also coaches a spring/summer league softball team. Tojo is the type of parent that is there to pick up kids, take them home, buy food and drinks for kids who may not have the money to do so themselves. “Tojo is one of a kind. He will do anything and everything that is needed to help the coaches and athletes at Broken Bow. He is loved by all our kids. He has a heart of gold,” says Kelly Marsaln, Broken Bow Middle School head coach. “He is a blessing to our school and our athletic programs.” His daughter Trini-Tee (9th grade), who is currently starting at 1st base for the Lady Savage softball team, says “ My dad pushes me to work hard on and off the field. He makes sure I am doing what I need to be doing. He is always there for me and my brothers.” Congrats to Tojo for being selected parent of the month!

Quick Hits: The Cougars host Madill in week two. This will be the first meeting between the schools since 1987 when Ada won by a count of 34-0. Ada also defeated Madill 21-7 in the first round of the 1983 state playoffs.

It has also been quite some time since the Cougars and Bristow Purple Pirates squared off on the gridiron. Ada is a perfect 5-0 all time against Bristow, including a 25-8 win in the 1993 regular season finale. The Cougars went on to win the state championship that year.

Ada still owns the most football state championships in Oklahoma history. The Cougs have been sitting on 19 titles since 1996. Clinton is creeping up on Ada with 16. Last 5 Years: 2013 - 7-4, 2012 – 12-1, 2011 – 6-5 2010 – 5-6, 2009 – 7-4

OFFENSE No other school has won more football state championships than Ada. And, while the Cougar nation hungers for number 20, the motto for the 2014 team and head coach Matt Weber is to win one.” “Our kids here it all the time get number 20,” admits Weber. “With our group it’s more about the system and just winning one.”

Ada fans have plenty of cause for excitement given the senior leadership and multi-talented depth at each position. Offensively, Ada returns eight starters including multi-talented Cory Kilby (6-7, 190, Sr.) at quarterback, who passed for 1,275 yards and 14 touchdowns last season. “He’s a Division-I basketball recruit,” said Weber. “He’s a strong runner and passer plus his grasp of what’s needed to win is huge and that allows Cory to be a leader by example.” Shiloh Windsor (6-3, 215, Sr.), who gained 815 yards and score 9 touchdowns in 2013 joins Austin Feezel (5-10, 180, Sr.) for a dynamic running back tandem. “Shiloh is an extremely talented player that can run. Austin is the fastest player on the team,” notes Webber. “Together they make our running game solid and fast.” Tryce Prince (6-0, 185, Sr.), who began the 2013 season as the starting quarterback before a broken collarbone injury, moves to wide receiver joining Montrel Black (5-9, 155, Sr.). “Together they are exciting to watch make big time plays,” said Weber. “Tryce’s versatility gives us a lot of choices and Montrel makes 3 moves in 3 steps and makes a catch for a first down or score.” Tim Simpson (6-0, 225, Sr.) will make an impact at tight end while Jake Martinez (58, 175, Jr.) and Gabe Simmons (6-2, 195, Jr.) provide added depth at receiver. Ada’s offensive line has veteran ability and

size with an average of 275 pounds per player including Dalton Woodward (6-3, 280, Sr.), Thomas Jim (6-3, 310, Sr.), Tanner Jack (5-10, 225, Sr.), Jordan Skillern (6-1, 270, Sr.) and Marwyn Dickerson (6-2, 285, Sr.), who wrestled heavyweight for the Cougars. “We’re bigger than ever since I’ve been here,” Weber confirmed, “plus they all can move and make plays happen.”

DEFENSE With the experience of nine returning starters, Ada’s 4-3 alignment will include size and mobility plus a flare for making big hits on defense. Three year veteran Garrett Beam (5-7, 195, Sr.) returns along with Tristan Doffin (5-10, 190, Sr.) at linebacker with Shiloh Windsor and Clayton Henry (6-0, 185, Sr.). “All three have a unique talent to find the football,” notes Weber, “sideline to sideline against the run and pass.” Another three year starter Halen Ogles (5-9, 235, Sr.), described by Weber as Ada’s defensive fireplug, joins second year starter Riley Alexander (5-6, 205, Sr.) in the middle of the four man front while Kobey Bellard (6-3, 230, Sr.) moves from linebacker to defensive end opposite Quinton Gregory (6-1, 195, Sr) and Tim Simpson. The secondary unit is sound in coverage with Levi Grimes (6-1, 180, Jr), a track standout and state wrestling qualifier, at strong safety while Jamal Henderson (5-8, 155, Sr.) and Osahwa Frazier lineup at cornerback. “We’ve got the talent to be a really good football team,” admits Weber referencing the depth at most positions. “I like what John Wooden says about the number one ingredient to success is talent. And, it’s our ability to maximize our depth with team chemistry that will create our opportunity to be in the mix for chasing the gold ball.”

Members of the team include: Kendal Johnson, Krysten Wallace, Morganne Freeman, Presley Hayes , Bree Willis, Shaylee Senkel, Natalie Buck, Elizabeth Redman, Kaitlyn Redman, Kendal Wilson, Maycee Bottoms, Morgan Galbreaith, Tara Horton and Colbi Hargus.

Lady Cougars Bring a Good Mix of Youth and Experience to the Diamond In 2013 the Ada Lady Cougars softball team finished the year with a 7-16 overall record and saw their season come to an end with backto-back losses to Byng in the district tournament.

This year the Lady Cougars will turn to a young group of players to help them improve on that mark. That young group will be able to rely on the leadership of seniors Elizabeth Redman and Morgan Galbreaith. Redman will get the nod at shortstop with Galbreaith starting at first base. In the circle the Lady Cougars will rely

on two sophomores, Krysten Wallace and Morganne Freeman, to do the bulk of the pitching work. Ada also has three juniors in catcher Kendal Johnson, left fielder Kendal Wilson, and centerfielder Tara Horton who will all play major roles this year and provide key leadership. Young players that Ada fans can also expect to make a big impact this year are sophomores Kaitlyn Redman and Maycee Bottoms along with freshman Shaylee Senkel. OFFENSE Head coach Jody Weber and the Davis Wolves are coming off a 15-0 state championship run last year and return five starters from that team on offense. Blake Summers (5-11, 172, Sr.) rushed for 2,000 yards and 30 touchdowns last year, which made him an obvious choice for the VYPE Top 100. Summers has excellent speed and will start both ways for the Wolves again this season. Jace Garrison (6-0, 233, Jr.) started at guard in every playoff game last year and appears to have the spot locked up, while senior Kasey Wood (5-9, 175) moved to the offensive line three games into the 2013 season and started every game after. Lance Riggs (6-3, 304, Sr.) started every game as a junior and has good athleticism for his size. Hunter Karlick (5-10, 185, Jr.) could slide into the running back role, but he’s certainly going to start on defense at linebacker.

sulphur bulldogs

OFFENSE With the return of an experienced group of skill position players, the bite of the Bulldogs will once again be fierce in 2014 as head coach Jim Dixon enters his 40th season as the keeper of the ‘Dog Pound. Cole Palmer (6-0, 175, Jr.) moves from receiver to quarterback duties giving Sulphur a confident and athletic talent running the 1-back gun formation. Palmer’s mobility and strong arm passing abilities will have proven performers at wide receiver including Nick Magruder (5-10, 170, Jr.), Ray Trent (6-2, 175, Jr.) and newcomer Jonathan Fite (6-1, 180, Jr.). Collectively the elusive and sure handed receivers will support the running back abilities of Nate Johnson (5-11, 210, Jr.) who brings a physical effort on every carry. The key for Sulphur’s ability to move the football rests on the shoulders of the offensive lineup including Marcos Nieves (5-9, 225, Jr.), Dennis Brown (5-10, 215, Jr.), Hunter Lawson (6-2, 250, Jr.), Reuben Gonzales (63, 265, Sr.) and Tyler Edgar (5-10, 215, So.). DEFENSE The tradition of the Bulldogs 4-4 defense continues with an aggressive approach from every position. The front line muscle of Cameron Babb (6-3, 215, Sr.) and Kanion Knapp (511, 185, Sr.) bring athleticism with an edge at defensive end while Martin Turrobiartes (5-8, 250, Jr.) and Dennis Brown will create collisions on the line of scrimmage. The combination of Nate Johnson, Nick Magruder and Jonathan Fite bring an old school downhill mentality to linebacker with mobility to cover the pass. The physical coverage skills of Ray Trent and Ray Palmer will give Sulphur confidence defending the run or pass. The off-season efforts of Dixon’s Dogs

incredible passes last season. Mitchell Scott (5-10, 165, Sr.) had four interceptions of his own last year giving the Wolves a tough defensive secondary to throw against. Chazdon Anderson (6-3, 208, Sr.) is an athletic and strong defensive end that coach Weber will count on to be a playmaker this season. Alongside Anderson is JT Maynard (6-2, 200, Jr.) who played well as a sophomore and has a great motor. Connor Webb (5-9, 228, So.) started every game as a freshman at nose guard last year and coach Weber calls him an “exceptional” player.

once again reflect the character of the legendary coach with a commitment to success in 2014. Sulphur’s lineup of opponents will once again require top Nick Magruder notch efforts as the Bulldogs open the year playing three of its first four games on the road.

OFFENSE With eight returning starters back on the offensive side of the ball the Comets will turn to a dominant ground game and an offensive line with a healthy dose of nastiness to lead the way. The main pillar of that offensive line that returns four of five starters is Collin Holybee (5-11, 190, Sr.). Tight end Landon Anderson (6-5, 180, Jr.) will also do a good amount of blocking up front but will also be a big threat in the passing game as well. In the offensive backfield Chris Bamburg (5-10, 200, Sr.) moves to tailback after starting under center last year. In 2013 Bamburg carried the ball 194 times and had 1,119 yards and 17 touchdowns. Bryar Byrne (5-10, 185, Sr.) will also see time at running back this year after rushing for 282 yards and two touchdowns last year on just 32 carries. Miko Blancett (5-7, 150, Jr.) will move into the starting quarterback role this year after running for 135 yards and four touchdowns on 34 carries last year.

dickson comets

DEFENSE On the defensive side of things Byrne will be the lynchpin of the Comets secondary starting at strong safety. In 2013 Byrne made 108 total tackles and also intercepted one pass and recovered one fumble. Coming off a sophomore season in which he made 11 tackles and two interceptions, Cole King (6-3, 175, Jr.) will also be a major factor in the secondary. At linebacker Ross Davis (5-8, 190, Sr.) will bring his aggressive style of play to the Comets’ defense. Sean Atnip (6-1, 250, Jr.) and Dylan Woods (5-10, 205, Sr.) will also have major roles to play this year on the defensive line. Overall head coach David Gilliam said that he is fired up to begin his first season in Dickson. “I am excited about taking over the Dickson Comet program. We are looking forward to an exciting year and many great things,” Gilliam said.

The growing process continues for the Indians with considerably more experience across the board this year as head coach Nic Claborn expects his squad to be stronger, more athletic, disciplined and more mentally tough following extra work in the off-season. They will focus on tunnel vision with one step at a time and getting better on a daily basis. Offensively, Tishomingo will work out of the spread with eight starters back that will give them the opportunity to play up-tempo or slow things down. Running the football will be key with the backfield duo of Solomon Cheadle (5-11, 200, Sr.) and Jason Dollar (5-10, 200, So.), who of which can be bruising runners. They also expect big things from quarterback Zac Floyd (5-11, 180, Jr.) along with playmaking receivers in Rilee Baker (6-3, 180, So.) and K.J. Adkison (5-9, 175, Sr.).

Getting speed on the field and swarming to the football will be vital for the Tishomingo defense, which will put more emphasis on playing with emotion and having fun as a unit.
