JUSTICE SMITH - SAVANNA HIGH SCHOOL
Character…is the sum total of a person’s moral qualities balanced against his or her imperfections. To say a person has good character or even to admire a person’s character does not require that they are perfect but it does mean they are a good person worthy of trust and admiration defined by traits like respect, integrity, courage, and compassion. An example is the everyday actions of Savanna High School junior Justice Smith. “A person’s true character is best defined by how you treat others,” said Smith, co-captain of the Lady Bulldogs basketball team. “For me, it’s about doing the right thing, taking care of the little things not just because someone tells you to or what you might win, but simply because it’s the right thing to do.” No one is born with good character; it’s not a hereditary trait. Character is established by conscientious adherence to moral values, not by lofty rhetoric or good intentions. Another way of saying that is, character is ethics in action. Something that Diane Inman, head girls’ basketball coach at Savanna, applauds the efforts of Smith, both on and off the court. “Justice defines the importance of character in everything she does,” said Inman. “To me, the proof of a person’s true self is exampled through their actions and Justice lives by example in everything she does. Her personality, morals, trustworthiness and a commitment to success are things that Justice takes pride in. She’s willing to be a role model for others to follow. When she’s says she’s going to do something, I know it’s going to get done right.” Confidence and determination are words used to

describe Smith, who credits the example set by her father that has molded her approach to everything she does. “The way my dad (Jimmie) does things proved to me the value of having respect for everyone young and old alike as well as the importance of encouragement,” smiled Smith. “He’s also stressed that if something is important and worth doing, it’s going to require hard work and total commitment to reach your goal.” Attention to details, including classroom responsibilities is proven by Smith’s 3.81 GPA; as well as completing concurrent enrollment in college classes during her junior year. As a member of the school’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes huddle, Influence is something that defines every decision made by Smith, on and off the court and continues to shape her heartfelt emotions. “You can’t just say one thing and do another,” confirmed Smith. “That’s why I always try to think before I speak or do something. I’ll ask myself will what I do make a positive change for another person’s needs, will it lift them up? Whenever you can be a positive influence to others, it keeps you focused on the important things in life.” Smith’s influence beams from her happy smile something that draws praise from Angie Wilson, assistant basketball coach and math teacher at Savanna. “Justice makes good choices and is always encouraging others to make the right decision,” said Wilson. “She’s a go-getter and she’s the number one fan of her teammates and she isn’t afraid to speak up on their behalf.” Character is both formed and revealed by how one deals with everyday situations as well as extraordinary pressures and temptations. Like a well-made tower, character is built stone by stone, decision by decision. And while Smith’s talents on the basketball court continue to make a difference in wins and losses for Savanna, above all it’s character that Smith wants to count the most. “Ability may get you to the top, but character is what keeps you there,” said Smith. “And character when combined with an attitude of respect and service will get all of us through whatever happens today or tomorrow no matter the score.”

VYPE Buffaloes Ready To Roam And Run The preseason sounds of whistles blowing inside Bob Brumley Fieldhouse signal the start for what promises to be an exciting season of McAlester basketball. Head coach Chris Zike enters his third season with a collection of talent capable of turning up the heat on opponents. Leading the list of playmakers is Todd Dawkins (6-5, Sr.), a repeat VYPE Top 100 selection who paced the scoring last year averaging
8
26.2 points per game. Described by Zike as a player who consistently looks to get his teammates open shots, Dawkins is a threat to score from the perimeter as well as on the bounce at the rim. “Todd always get the primary focus of our opponents and his playmaking skills result in scoring chances for everyone else on the court because of his willingness to share the rock,” said Zike who points out a growing recruiting interest from colleges for Dawkins playmaking and scoring ability at a 6-5 guard. Adding to the effectiveness of Zike’s up-tempo style play will be Justin Whatley (6-8, Jr.), who brings a long and athletic presence on both ends of the floor along with the aggressiveness of Ryan Kelley (63, So.), Rishard Rushing (5-10, Jr.), and Jett Wood (6-2, So.). “With our 5-out motion offense, we can take advantage of Justin’s size to score plus he’s very active in our press,” said Zike. “Ryan keeps the back door locked consistently in our full court pressure defense.” Adding up all the different options, Zike quietly smiles with a look of confidence. “We’re much more athletic than any team I’ve had in my tenure here at McAlester,” said Zike who also points to a group of energetic guards Jesse

Anderson (5-9, Sr.), Tanner Coffee (58, Jr.), Joseph Kopenheimer (5-8, Sr.), Vinny Williams (5-3, Jr.) and Rashad Clark (5-10, Jr.) that will allow the Buffs to maintain pressure on both ends of the court. The depth of this year’s roster is a definite advantage including the added talents of Mike Redway (5-6, Jr.), Bryce Singleton (6-1, So.), Brayden Parker (60, Jr.) and Nick Hazell (5-10, Sr.) whose football talents have created a physical style of play. “When all the pieces to the puzzle go together, we have a chance to be a tough team to beat,” said Zike.

VYPE Lady Buffs Seek To Use Experience To Create Victories
Delaney Nix Another year older and more of a threat…those are not the words to a new song on the radio but the talents for the Lady Buffs of coach April Burns whose roster provides a variety of ways to score as well as deny opponents points with pressure this season. “We return almost everyone from last season and these girls have become students of the game,” notes Burns.
“With the added experience creating confidence, it allows us to push the ball up the floor at a high tempo on offense while playing defense end line to end line. Our three seniors have been in our system since the eighth grade and they know it inside out resulting in a lead by example atmosphere mentality for everyone on the team.” After producing a team high 14.3 points per game last season, Delaney Nix (5-8, So.) leads the scoring chances for the Lady Buffs playing along side senior guards Bri Talbot (5-8, Sr.) and Tayler Williams (5-7, Sr.) as well as Taylor Compton (5-5, Jr.). “Delaney gets better everyday,” said Burns noting the fact that last year as a freshman, Nix earned alltourney honors in three different tournaments. “Her unselfishness is making everyone else better resulting in more points on the scoreboard.” Burns is also excited about the returns of an offseason focus to deliver a true “presence in the paint” that will feature the play of four post players led by Taryn Howard (5-10, So.), Taylor Gunion (5-8,
Jr.), Megan Fassino (6-1, Sr.) and Bren Cable (5-11, So.). “That’s been a focal point for us this season,” said Burns, “and all four are making a difference in our ability to not just score inside but also defend in the paint.” And for the Lady Buffs this season the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. “Four quarters,” said Burns, “it’s our top priority to play with passion on every possession from start to finish. When we do that, it’s going to be fun to watch.”

VYPE STRATFORD BULLDOGS: PERFECT IN EVERY WAY Class A State Championship Caps An Undefeated Season Powered by an explosive offense and overpowering defense, the Stratford Bulldogs claimed the Class A State Championship with a 67-28 victory over Cashion to give the Garvin County school its first ever state championship trophy. After posting victories over Rush Springs (54-0), Hooker (47-7), Rejoice Christian (4014) and Hominy (24-0), coach Mike Blackburn’s team left no doubt about the outcome in the finals. Quarterback Matthew Blackburn passed for two scores and ran for another while the one-two combination of Kyle Qualls, who rushed for 149 yards and Kyler Wade, who totaled 106 yards on the ground including a pair of touchdowns provided all the offense firepower. The ‘Dogs defensive was just a dominant forcing five turnovers including a pair of “pick-6” interceptions by Dakota Rodgers and Lane Martin as Stratford wrapped up a 15-0 campaign. With the help of his coaches while growing up in McAlester, Will Holiman Jr. fulfilled his childhood dream of one day playing college basketball. And now, the 1998 graduate of McAlester High School wants to pay it forward for today’s young people of southeastern Oklahoma through the athletic training facility, Future Stars. “I was able to live my dream because of the help from lots of people,” said Holiman who not only earned All-State honors in high school but also coached on the collegiate level. “Now it’s my turn to create a future for today’s kids whether that’s being ready for high school or trying to reach the collegiate level and have fun at the same time.” Working along with his lifelong mentor, father and current McAlester assistant coach Will Holiman Sr., the younger Holiman’s dream come true, Future Stars opens the doors to success and currently involves more than 100 kids, ages five all the way to the pros through a program that offers the necessary ingredients to become a star athlete. “The first question I’m asked is what can I do to become a better player and a better teammate,” Holiman said with a smile. “And when I hear them say the word teammate, I know there’s a bright future ahead because that young person is sincere about developing their total package of skills.” Future Stars Athletic Facility provides more than just basketball training including core development, jump rope, speeds and ladder motor skills that not only improve the athletic abilities but also builds confidence that will help in all walks of the young person’s life. “The younger you start your kids

Overall the team returns talented players on both ends of the floor and will have good depth on the bench. If the players buy into the system and play together, this Lions team could be one of the turnaround stories of the year. The players have expressed their desire to “make a run at state” this season. Sydney Moore -Stringtown A starter since her freshman season, Sydney Moore continues to top the scoring charts for the Lady Tigers averaging 11.4 points per game this season. The 5-5 senior is a threat to score with a soft touch mid-range jump shot as well as on the bounce using her quickness to attack the rim. “Sydney’s competitiveness is a real plus,” said head coach Matt Henry. “Not only can she score but she uses her quickness to create turnovers on defense and her aggressive approach continues to produce a rebounding strength for us.” Moore is a member of Stringtown’s softball and track teams including qualifying for the state track meet in the 300m hurdles the past two years and was a member of Stringtown’s 4x400 state qualifying relay team.
Weston Sandmann -Stringtown The roar of the crowd cheering for the Tigers basketball team continues to grow louder resulting from the play of 6-3 senior Weston Sandmann whose 17.5 points per game average is the driving force behind Stringtown’s early season wins. “He’s clutch from beyond the arc,” complimented head coach Shane Winter, and he’s tough to stop at the rim. Weston is our captain on the court and the other players feed off his leadership.” When he’s not putting points on the basketball scoreboard, Sandmann is busy completing welding projects and also enjoys competing in calf roping events.

Atoka Basketball Preview Wampus Cats gear up for the basketball season BOYS Russ Harrison 2014-15 Record: 26-3 Last season, the Wampus Cats fell to eventual state champion Heritage Hall in the semi finals of the state tournament. Atoka loses a couple of guys, but the talent that is returning should keep the success going. “Looking to continue the success we had the last couple of years,” coach Russ Harrison said. “We have a new team, new identity and hopefully the same outcome.” Atoka has one of the biggest players in the state. Bishop Coulter (6-6, Sr.), a VYPE Top 100 player, returns in the post for coach Harrison. Coulter averaged 18.4 points and 11.1 rebounds per game last year, and constantly made a difference in the post. The Wampus Cats will need him to repeat that
production this season. Point guard Tyreke Johnson (6-0, Sr.) will captain the offense, and will be a nice compliment to the big man Coulter. Brycen Bass (65, Sr.) joins Coulter in the post, and adds more length. Rim protection will be a strength of this team. Traelon Yarbrough (5-10, Jr.) and D.J. McConnel (6-3, Jr.) join Johnson in the backcourt. Atoka has the size and athleticism to compete with anybody, and will be a tough team to beat in Class 3A. GIRLS Crystal Robinson 2014-15 Record: 5-18 The Lady Wampus Cats are hoping their new coach can come in and turn the program around. Atoka went and hired Crystal Robinson, who is arguably the greatest girls basketball player in Oklahoma
history, to come in and rebuild the program. Robinson has an extremely young team with little experience. Callie Helms (5-6, Jr.) will play point guard and captain the offensive unit. Lainey Griffin (5-7, Jr.) will play in the backcourt next to Helms. Paige Allen (5-9, Jr.) plays forward, alongside Sophia Smith (5-9, Jr.) and Danielle Granger (5-9, So.). Courtney Hill (5-10, So.) and Chloe Cooper (5-10, Fr.) are both extremely young, but have good size and will add depth to the forward position. Abby Garrison (5-6, Jr.) will rotate in the backcourt, adding depth. Brianna Jackson (6-0, Fr.) plays in the post, but is inexperienced. The Lady Wampus Cats will have to focus on playing together as a team, as they figure out their identity with their new coach.

The memories of the Class 2A state championship provide the motivation for the Latta Panthers race to reach the Big House this season as head coach Matt Bryant returns only two starters from a 24-6 area tournament team last year. Carter Kessinger (6-3, Sr.) who totaled 12.7 points per game a year ago joins Kele Parnacher (510, Jr.). The Panthers will also turn to seniors Parker Henderson (510, Sr.) and Cullen Edens (6-0 Sr.) plus underclassmen Dustin West (6-1, Jr.), Adam Jordan (6-2, So.) and Isaiah Ott (6-4, Jr.) to fill the lineup that lost eight seniors from a year ago. “This program is built on a foundation of success,” said Bryant. “This year’s team knows success is gained by hard work and I’m confident we have the players ready to step up.”

The pieces to the state tournament puzzle are on the hardwood for the Allen Mustangs as four starters return from last year’s 18-win campaign. Logan George (6-2, Jr.) who averaged 19 points per outing leads an experienced roster of talent including Josiah Jones (6-1, Jr.) Christian Henry (6-0, Sr.), Tony Peay (6-1, Sr.) and Ty Brown (6-1, Jr.) for head coach Greg Mills. “We’ve got high expectations,” admits Mills, “and by doing the little things with aggressiveness good things are within our grasp.” Athleticism and experienced talent is a proven advantage for the Stratford Bulldogs who return four starters from last year’s 1511 campaign including Cade Savage who averaged 14.5 points per game for coach Mark Qualls. Adding to the point parade will be Bobby Cothren who totaled 13.7 points and 7.1 rebounds along with Lane Martin and Matt Blackburn as part of the eight seniors on this year’s team.
take the court.” The Roff Tigers expectations for a winning season revolve around the return of five returning starters plus a roster filled with basketball skills for head coach Larry Johnston’s squad that won 16 contests last year. The Tigers have size on their side with five players standing 6-3 or taller including C.J. Johnson (65, Sr.), Dalton Reed (6-4, Sr.), Mike Anderson (6-3, Sr.), Ty McCoy (63, Jr.) and Daniel Sweet (6-4, Jr.). Point production from the guard talent will include Brent Stephens (6-1, Sr.), Josh Lewis (5-10, So.) and Tanton Eldred (5-8, Jr.). “Time will tell and with five that have been there before plus the talents of some new guys, we expect to make a deep run in the playoff and be in the chase for the Big House in March,” said Johnston.
“Our seniors know what it takes to win,” said Qualls. “Their leadership on and off the court gives us an opportunity for a win every time we

Ada Girls and Boys Basketball Teams Have High Hopes (Girls Photo Credit: Stacy Godwin – Captured Moments Photography) The Lady Cougars welcome the return of four starters plus a roster complete with experience and bolstered by the addition of talented underclassmen as head coach Christie Jennings enters her fourth season on the bench. Preseason All-VYPE selection Payton Taylor (5-11, Jr.) who total 8.5 points and 3.7 rebounds last year returns to join Devanee Simmons (5-5, Sr.) who chipped in 6.4 points per game along with Dembri Weeks (5-6, Sr.) and McKenzie Dean (59, Jr.) to lead the roar of the Lady Cougars. Adding to the expectations for success will be Madalyn Jessepe (5-11, Jr.), Aneli Thomsen (5-9, Jr.), Tara Horton (5-6, Sr.) and Katy Redman (5-8, Jr.) while sophomores Madelyn Jacques (6-0, So.) and Mikayla Emarthle (5-11, So.) provide
size in the blocks. “This group is very athletic,” admits Jennings who has 56 wins during the last three seasons on the Ada bench. “We plan to push the tempo as well as mix our defenses with a rotation of players to gain advantages.” As boys coach Ron Anderson enters his eighth year at the helm, the Cougars return three starters including Jermaine Lawson (5-8, Sr.), Hunter Frazier (510, Sr.) and Ben Pruitt (6-3, Jr.) to lead the expectations to be what Anderson describes his best shooting lineup top to bottom during his tenure as head coach and giving the Cougars continued attention among the state’s best team in Class 4A. A “big reason” for high expectations will by Vaughn Appleman (6-7, Jr.) who will provide a physical presence inside while sharpshooting guard Montie Carpitcher (5-11, Sr.) delivers a threepoint scoring threat. Avery Logan (6-1, Sr.), Christian Maloy (6-2, So.) and Kobe Burges (5-10, Fr.) who
is already drawing interests from college scouts. “I really like this year’s combination of talent. We don’t have that one goto player that we’ve had in the past,” said Anderson. “What we have are kids with a will to win plus talent. I believe we’re as balanced from top to bottom that I’ve had here at Ada.”

Sulphur Basketball Teams Loaded With Experience Both the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs return four starters from successful teams last season GIRLS Toby Todd 14-15 Record: 15-11 Outlook: It seems cliché but expectations for the Sulphur Lady Bulldogs basketball team are always high. This year that continues as head coach Toby Todd and assistant coach Tracy Eldred will do their best to guide an experience-laden team through a rigorous schedule in a tough Class 4A field. Triggering the Lady Bulldogs offense this year is Kacie West (5-8, Jr.). Last year West averaged 8.3 points and 3.2 rebounds per game and was selected as an all-conference player. Reilly Williams (5-9, Sr.) was also an all-conference player last year after averaging 8.8 points and 5.5 rebounds per game from her forward spot. Forward Savannah Ashford 32

(5-10, Jr.) is also a player to watch this season as she looks to improve upon her 9.4 points and 4.5 rebounds per game averages from a year ago. Finally, expect Devin Dunn (5-7, Sr.) and Kara Cornell (5-9, Sr.) to make solid contributions this year for the Lady Bulldogs. Overall coach Todd said he is looking forward to the season and what the future could hold for his team. “We have four returning starters with some talented sophomores coming in. I am excited about this season. I think we will have several girls competing for serious playing time,” Todd said. BOYS Chase Todd 14-15 Record: 14-12 Outlook: After a season in which the Bulldogs finished just above .500 Sulphur head coach Chase Todd is more than ready to hit full stride this season. “I’m excited about it. I think we have a team that can compete
every night and make a deep run in the playoffs,” Todd said. That run will need to come in a tough Class 4A where the Bulldogs are sure to see tough teams at nearly every turn in the playoffs. “The biggest difference from 3A to 4A is the size. Especially when you get into the playoffs it seems like everyone has big post players and even big, long guards too,” Todd said. Senior, Chase Dilbeck will lead the team this year at guard after being the Bulldogs’ leading scorer last year along with being an all-conference honorable mention selection. Sophomore John Wes Jacobs saw quite a bit of playing time last year as a freshman and is another very good shooter that will stretch the floor for the Bulldogs’ offense. Overall coach Todd said that the Bulldogs will bring back four starters from a year ago but should also be a very deep team with seven to eight players that could contribute.
VYPE Not Just a Football School The Davis basketball teams are ready to make some noise on the hardwood this winter GIRLS Jeff Brown 14-15 Record: 22-7 Outlook: Always the bridesmaid and never the bride. That old saying seems to be the neverending storyline for the Davis Lady Wolves. In each of the last three years the Lady Wolves have advanced all the way to the area tournament but have failed to earn a spot at the state tournament. That fact has left the Lady Wolves hungrier than ever according to head coach Jeff Brown. “It has definitely made us hungry. We have felt like we have been disrespected across the state when it comes to the rankings in previous years and we feel like we are the best team in our area, definitely in our class from this area, but you can talk about it all you want you still have to go out and prove it on the court and that is what our focus is this season,” Brown said. The Lady Wolves do bring back
five players who started at times last season and out of their main rotation only lost one player to graduation. Senior point guard Jaycee Sanders will be the floor general for the Lady Wolves this year dictating the pace and flow of the game. With Sanders handling the distribution of the ball look for senior Becky Wilson and junior Jolie Romine to handle the bulk of the scoring. Wilson is a 6-2 forward and is not only an offensive threat on the block but also a defensive stalwart. Romine meanwhile is probably the best athlete on the team and has been shooting the ball better than ever before according to Brown. Other key players for the Lady Wolves will be seniors Jaley Brown, Sarah Elizabeth Talmage and junior Jazmyne Thomas. All three of those players have played significant minutes in the past and will be counted on to do so again this year. BOYS Jeff Brown 14-15 Record: 4-18
Outlook: The Davis Wolves have always been able to put athletes on the floor, the problem is after a long and grueling football season some of those athletes haven’t been 100 percent for basketball. The other problem is that while the Wolves have always been able to guard teams tough they have struggled to put the ball in the hole at times. This year Jeff Brown takes over the boys program and is optimistic about what the Wolves can accomplish. “We are young but we are athletic and I feel like we can turn the corner this year,” Brown said. Senior guard Ethan Hayes will be the team’s leader on the perimeter but should be joined by sophomores Noah Goodin and Briston Summers. In the frontcourt expect forwards Jordan Thomas and Gunner Arms to be the Wolves’ go-to options. “We will have to rely on our athleticism, especially this year to keep us in games. Most of our guys have good quickness and speed and Gunner is a big, strong kid who can score in the middle,” Brown said. DECEMBER 2015

Broken Bow Lady Savages Head Coach: Dottie Slabaugh 2014-15 Record: 21-7 Assistant Coach: Kevin Slabaugh OUTLOOK The cast of the 2015-16 Lady Savages will look familiar to friend and foe as all five starters make their return to the court this season. “We will be an older more experienced team, after finishing on the Friday of the Area Tournament last year with a record of 21-7 and returning all five starters as well as our entire supporting cast from the bench. The Lady Savages could be a contender this year,” said coach Slabaugh. Michaela Richbourg (5-8, Jr.) will start at the forward position sliding to the post when necessary. Richbourg averaged 15 points, 9.5 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 4.0 assists a game last year, the kind of numbers that will get you a VYPE Top 100 nomination and put you in the running for the Miss Basketball Award at the end of the season. Aspen Williston (6-4, So.) joins Richbourg down low. Williston had an excellent freshman campaign averaging 10 points and 7.0 rebounds per contest. Erica Baker (5-0, Sr.) and Shalee Brantley (5-5, Sr.) are two seniors leaders this team has running the point and shooting guard positions. Baker averaged 7.5 points a game while Brantley averaged 7.4 points. Keyonna Gordon (5-9, Sr.) and Katelyn Saelim (5-7, Sr.) are tough on both ends

Broken Bow Basketball of the floor. Combined they averaged 3.0 steals and over 7.0 rebounds a game. If last year was any indication of what this year could become for the Lady Savages, then the Broken Bow faithful should be extremely excited about this season.
Broken Bow Savages Head Coach Ryan Woolsey 2014-15 Record: 7-19 Assistant Coach: Kraig Sunberg
Michaela Richbourg
OUTLOOK The level of experience returning to the court for head coach Ryan Woolsey is high and should give the team the opportunity to avoid some early mistakes and hit their stride sooner than later. “We have a ton of experience returning. My junior class is very talented and most all of them got huge minutes as sophomores. We took some beatings last year with them on the floor but it should pay dividends this season as they all have senior type minutes,” said coach Woolsey. Konner Neal (6-1, Jr.) will start at guard leading the backcourt with senior Kahron Marshall (5-11). The pair gives the Savages a tough combo to deal with in transition. Roy Eason (5-11, Jr.) joins the
tandem in the backcourt giving coach Woolsey a solid group to run the offense. Sheldon Herrod (6-0, Jr.) and Ethan Bean (6-4, Jr.) could see time at forward, while sophomore Patrick Young (6-1) is another athletic player that can play in the paint. Joe Tolison (5-11, Jr.) could be the sixth man for the Savages this season and BJ Crutchfield (5-9, Jr.) looks to grab minutes off the bench. Juan Lewis (6-0, Sr.) adds depth at the guard position. “We are going to be extremely athletic and deep at the guard position. The inside game will be anchored by Ethan Bean and Patrick Young. I look for both of those guys to make a name for themselves before the season is over,” said coach Woolsey.

McCurtain County Broken Bow and Idabel might get the majority of the hype but there are some other teams to keep an eye on Clayborn takes over in Haworth The Haworth boys have had one of the best runs of the last decade. The Lions have seemingly been a lock for the state tournament and 20 or more wins every year for as long as many can remember. This year however Haworth’s long
time head coach Burtchal Griffin departs for Idabel and Kirk Clayborn takes over on the sidelines. The cupboard isn’t completely bare however with all-conference guards Jerry Threadgill Jr. and Kenneth Flemings Jr. both back for another season in a Haworth jersey. Overall Clayborn said he has high expectations for this team despite an incredibly difficult schedule. “We probably play the toughest
schedule of any team in 2A by far. If we can just survive December then I think we will be a team that can make a deep run in the playoffs,” Clayborn said. Lady Jax loaded with experience After going 25-5 last season, Wright City girls basketball head coach Mike Converse knows that he has the pieces to make a deep playoff run this year. “Although we lost a few ingredients to graduation, we do return six experienced players who were the meat and taters of our team last year. Expectations are very high for this team,” Converse said. Junior point guard Jacie Engler averaged 14.5 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.6 steals per game a year ago and is the straw that stirs the drink for the Lady Jax. Also look for Darci Converse and Cheyanne Jeter to be major contributors to the Lady Jax roster this year at the forward positions.

Wright City boys boast a very deep team
this year head coach Jake Fenley is hoping to turn that around.
The Lumberjax don’t have that player that just jumps off the page at you but they do have a roster loaded with players who can all get their job done and that makes them very dangerous.
Junior Dillon Wyatt will be the team’s leader on the court but also look for sophomore Ryan Tuck and freshman Jace Jordan to be key players in Fenley’s game plan. Other players to look for this year will be seniors Cody McDaniel and Jarrin McKinney.
Robert Briley (6-3, So.) and Wade Young (6-1, Sr.) are the team’s two leaders starting at the forward spots. Both players are extremely athletic post players that can score in multiple ways along with clean the glass and both should cause opponents plenty of headaches this year. At the guard spots look for Dayln Burrell (6-0, So.) and Chris Trusty (5-9, So.) to be the team’s go-to players. Brayden Christian (6-3, Sr.) give the Lumberjax good size on the perimeter and should get some big muinutes this year. Other players to look for are Lane Keeling (6-3, Jr.), Dakota Hooper (63, Sr.) Darnell Wallace (6-0, Sr.) and Lane Tuck (5-9, Sr.). Keeling, Hooper and Wallace will all spend time in the frontcourt this season while Tuck will give the team good depth in the backcourt. Valliant Boys hoping to rebound this year The Valliant Bulldogs struggled when it came to wins and losses last season finishing 4-16 overall but

When asked how he thought his young, inexperienced lineup would handle the rigors of a tough schedule Fenley said he is optimistic. “You never know about young guys but our younger players play with a lot of confidence and I think they will be able to handle it,” Fenley said.
GAMES TO WATCH: Haworth at Idabel Feb. 16 This game is sure to match up two extremely talented teams and that’s a good enough reason in itself to make this a game to watch. The cherry on top however is that Idabel head coach Burtchal Griffin left Haworth to coach their McCurtain County foe. There will be plenty on the line for this late season matchup and with the added emotion thrown in to the mix you know the atmosphere will be electric. Wright City vs. Calera (girls) Jan. 15 Two teams that are inside the Class
Robert Briley 2A top 20 square off in this one. Wright City is a team that many across the state expect to see at the Big House in March. Calera however is no team to sleep on and could make a big statement if they could go on the road and get a win over the Lady Jax. Valliant at Eagletown Jan. 8 These two teams already had an early season showdown in Valliant back on Dec. 3 with Eagletown coming away with a 67-63 win in overtime. Valliant is a team hoping to make a splash this year and a revenge victory on the road would definitely help with that. After playing each other so close in the first matchup this one may come down to which team can make the best adjustments or possibly just which team wants it more.

Idabel Preview
Idabel Lady Warriors Head Coach: Katedria Mosley 2014-15 Record: N/A Assistant Coach: John Harjo Several key players are back for the Lady Warriors and head coach Katedria Mosley. Leading scorer Shyia Smith (6-1, So.) returns after averaging 11 points and 9.0 rebounds a game as a freshman. Sophomore guard Stevesha Cursh (5-9) joins Smith in the starting lineup giving coach Mosley two bigtime players on both ends of the floor. Cursh averaged 9.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists last season. Two more sophomores are in the starting lineup this season. They include Tearsney Grayson (5-6) and Neriah Wharry (5-6) both guards and both average 5.0 points and 3.0 rebounds. The youthfulness of the starting lineup would be a concern for most, but coach Mosley is confident in their abilities and expects this team to come into their own as the season gets closer to tournament time. Miracle Beard (5-3, Jr.) and Mikela Wharry (5-10, So.) provide
depth at the guard and post positions. The pair are solid players with tremendous potential to help the team this season. Jula Harjo (5-8, Sr.) and Ashley Springs (5-9, Sr.) bring experience to the team and their leadership in games and in practice should help this team move forward. dabel Warriors Head Coach: Burtchal Griffin 2014-15 Record: 21-6 Assistant Coach: Marcus Wharry Head coach Burtchal Griffin has a talented pool of players this season and is excited to take over the program, but implementing a new system can be a challenge. Coach Griffin is pushing the players to accept the team concept and come together as a group. “Team unity during adversity will determine our basketball season, said coach Griffin. One player who gets the team concept is KJ Wells (6-3, Sr.). Wells averaged 12 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1 blocked shot a game last year. Another team
KJ Wells player is Demetrius Faulks (5-11, Sr.) at the point guard position. Faulks averaged 8.0 points, 3.0 assists and 3.0 steals a game last year. Tyriq French (6-3, Jr.) looks to start at forward where his 6.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals will help the teams success on the boards and in transition. Senior Cheyne Lewis (6-3) joins French at forward giving the Warriors two solid players with good range on the floor. Tyrone Howell (6-3, So.) and Markell Lewis (6-2, So.) are younger players looking to make their mark on this team and break into the starting lineup. Other players to look for this season include Kiyshaun Flowers (6-1, Jr.), LA Allen (5-10, Sr.), Derrick Brewer (5-10, Sr.), CJ Frost (6-4, So.) and Seth Tisho (5-10, So.).
