“FOOTBALL IS A FAMILY AFFAIR” Pressure or Privilege? When it comes to football in the home of McAlester head coach James Singleton it’s an everyday way of life. Not just for the coach but also for every member of the family including 2017 senior Bryce Singleton. And altogether, the Singletons wouldn’t have it any other way.

“Our family revolves around football,” confirmed Singleton, a native of Idabel. “With me as the coach, my wife a daughter of a coach and our three boys that have actively participated during their high school careers plus our extended families who are always at the games to say we eat, sleep and breathe football is an understatement.” Every day each member of the household has their football duties.

“Tara is the director of football operations by keeping me on schedule as well as always having the boys gear ready to go,” remarked Singleton with a smile. “Because she understands the little things that make a difference, she always makes

Bryce Singleton, whose development the past two seasons has resulted in moving from a wide receiver/defensive back to a more physical twoway player at outside linebacker along with fullback/tight end assignments relishes the opportunity of playing football for his dad, coach Singleton.

“I see it both ways. Pressure because your teammates look to you as an example but a privilege because more people know you putting you in the spotlight as well as those one-onone coaching sessions,” chuckled the younger Singleton.

Singleton coached his oldest son J.R. at Fort Gibson and now welcomes the younger pair to practice everyday in McAlester. So does the coach agree with the linebacker’s game plan?

“It’s definitely a privilege for me. I try to balance the attaboys as a dad and coach at the same time,” said coach Singleton. “As a coach you’re going to play your best players and that creates a responsibility on the boys to prove to themselves and everyone else to know they’re one of the best 11 guys on the field regardless of their name.” Father and son both agree the football counseling is something they try to leave on the field.

“When the boys weren’t driving, it was a lot easier to wrap up our football Q&A on the field or on the

way to the house,” said the elder Singleton. “Now after practice they want to hang out with friends, so you try to keep it as positive as it can be. There’s sometimes when mom becomes the coach with her motivational comments.” Without question, competitiveness abounds within the Singleton family especially when talk turns to who’s the better player.

“If you take a vote, I think I’d win in a landslide,” laughed Bryce. “But if you ask J.R. or Parker their opinion would be different. Mom would abstain in voting even in the event of a tie.” So does dad compare his playing days at Idabel to the talents of the three boys? “All my game films are archived under lock and key until they’re 25 years old,” said the coach. “Then we’ll take them out and do some comparing.”

James and Tara, Bryce and Parker along with J.R. are all in unison when asked about their passion for football. “The world stops during football season, but we all understand it,” said coach Singleton. “I can honestly tell people that I have the best seat in the stadium to watch my kids play football. We wouldn’t trade it for anything.”

OFFENSE Since 2010, the Buffaloes have roamed among the top teams in Class 5A football, averaging 10-plus wins per year. And while the cast of playmakers will change, the expectations of McAlester football remain the same: to be playing when the playoffs start in November. The power of the herd this season rests in the offensive line, where three starters return including VYPE Top 100 Clay Slater (6-3, 245, Sr.), Matt Drake (6-3, 265,

Austin Vilar Sr.) and Austin Dugan (5-11, 210, Jr.), plus big, aggressive play from Trey Briggs (6-8, 305, So.) and Rhett Regan (5-11, 240, Sr.). “It all starts up front and that’s a big advantage for us to win the wars in the trenches,” said head coach James Singleton. “The experience and efforts from the big guys up front let us do what we do offensively.” The Buffaloes must replace the school’s alltime leading passer at quarterback, but there’s a two-way race ongoing between Chris Hilton (6-4, 190, So.) and A.J. Martin (6-0, 185, Jr.), who last season played at wide receiver and totaled 372 yards receiving with seven touchdown catches. While the survivor will direct the offense, the other won’t come off the field. Eli Martin (6-0, 195, Sr.) will be the workhorse in the running game, combining speed and power to defeat would-be tacklers. McAlester’s spread offense once again offers versatility with a balance of running and passing. Bryce Singleton (6-3, 215, Sr.) can play fullback, tight end or receiver while Austin Vilar (6-3, 225, Sr.) adds options at tight end along with Matt Dombeck (5-11, 185, Sr.) at H-back with support from Jaxon Rodriguez (5-9, 170, Jr.) at wide receiver. DEFENSE Attacking and aggressive 6

describes the mental and physical mindset of the Buffaloes’ 3-4 alignment, where five starters return eager to continue forcing turnovers. One of the reasons McAlester has been able to put points on the scoreboard is the result of the Buffaloes’ ability to create turnovers from its defensive unit. With seven starters back in black for another season, fans of the Buffaloes can expect similar results. and create collisions. Clay Slater leads the assault along with Bryce Singleton and Austin Vilar, who recorded 92 tackles, including five sacks last season, while Singleton collected 57 stops. Returning starter A.J. Buckley (6-0, 235, Jr.) bolsters the defensive line, as well as Matt Drake and Rhett Regan. Singleton’s defensive scheme also will draw positive results from Austin Dugan, Jacob Holloway (5-11, 193, Jr.) and Josh Countz (5-8, 165, Sr.) at inside linebacker. The ringleader of the

secondary will be Matt Dombek, who totaled 72 tackles at safety in 2016, joining forces with Jaxon Rodriguez and brothers A.J. and Eli Martin at cornerback. “We have a chance for another outstanding year,” Singleton said. “Success breeds success and we have some very talented players again on this year’s team. When the pieces of the puzzle all fit together, we plan to be competing at a championship level in November.”

OFFENSE It’s a mixed bag of news for the Diggers as they start their second season under coach Jeff Marshall. The good news is that Wilburton achieved its main goal last year of making the Class 2A playoffs for the first time in five years. The bad news is that a good part of the experience and talent that accomplished that goal graduated last spring. So Wilburton will have to find the players willing to step up and take the Diggers to the next level. Levi Knight (5-11, 170, Sr.) is heir apparent at the quarterback spot. He played in just a handful of games with fewer than 10 passes or rushes in 2016. It’s a similar situation at tailback where Tanner Arnold (5-9, 150, Jr.) played in almost every game but had fewer than 20 carries overall. The most experienced skill position player back for the Diggers is wide receiver Tyler Crabtree (5-6, 130, Sr.) who had 25 receptions for just over 300 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Big tackle Cutler Lacey (6-5, 305, Sr.) will be the main power up front in the spread offense while Travis Moody (5-8, 190, Sr.) will bring experience back at guard. DEFENSE The Diggers return just two starters on the defensive side of the ball so the help wanted sign is definitely out here. Making life miserable

Wilburton for opposing quarterbacks in the secondary will be Tyler Crabtree who picked off four enemy passes last season. The 3-3 base defense will also find some new faces in the lineup including Ian Mooers (6-1, 190, Sr.) at a tackle spot, Cameron Dehart (6-0, 210, Sr.) with the right build and quickness needed at linebacker and Gunner Henry (6-2, 290, Jr.) with a big presence to fill the middle at nose guard. “Graduating 12 seniors, we’ll have to have to have several players step up,” said Marshall. ‘I’m excited about what we are doing and the new faces.” SCHEDULE 9-1 – at Talihina 9-8 – vs. Quinton 9-15 – at Savanna 9-22 – vs. Hugo 9-29 – at Spiro 10-6 – at Atoka 10-13 – vs. Panama 10-19 – at Hartshorne 10-27 – vs. Valliant 11-3 – at Antlers

OFFENSE “It’s what’s up front that counts” might be an old advertising slogan. But it might also be the motto for the Miners, who will have to do some panning for new talent in 2017 after the loss of several 10

talented seniors, including running back Chance Parker, who accounted for nearly two-thirds of Hartshorne’s offense last season with nearly 2,500 yards rushing. Jeff Beare returns to take the reins at his alma mater. The heart of the offense will rest in the line, where Beare has five players back who saw at least some playing time last year. Leading that group is All-District lineman Sam Little (6-0, 235, Sr.) joined by Robert Nichter (65, 225, Sr.), Josh Rentie (6-3, 275, Sr.), Zane Teafatiller (5-7, 190, So.) and Joe Benedict (6-1, 250, Sr.). Tight end Caynon Bailey-Morgan (6-0, 165, Sr.) is the lone skill position player back for the Miners, though he was used primarily as a blocker to support the run-heavy offense in 2016. “With our size and experience we should be able to control the line of scrimmage on offense,” Beare said. DEFENSE Little and Rentie will play on both sides of the ball for Hartshorne, with Little manning a linebacker spot and Rentie on the defensive line in the new 4-3 look. Also back is Justin Johnson (5-8, 180, Sr.) at a linebacker spot and Khary Brown (5-10, 150, So.) in the secondary, who

had a standout season as a freshman in 2016. Otherwise, new faces will be the main order in the rest of the defense, including Andres Lujano (5-7, 150, Sr.) at cornerback and Wyatt Baker (5-11, 170, So.) moving into the strong safety position. After making it to the second round of the playoffs last year, the Miners will have to grow up quickly to repeat that success in 2017. “I’m extremely humbled and excited to take over a program that I grew up

OFFENSE The Bulldogs seek to employ the advantage of game-time experience as coach James Bond’s squad chases the pack to join the Class A postseason playoff trail. With a combination of eight starters with playmaking skills, Savanna’s offense presents a balanced ground game, featuring the talents of Blake Cathey (5-7, 175, Sr.), who combined for over 1,000 all-purpose yards (including 12 touchdowns), joined by Richie Williams (59, 175, Sr.), whose versatility and elusiveness resulted in six touchdowns and 750 all-purpose yards. The duo provides power plus speed to get to the boundary and up the field. Experience under pressure will be an advantage at quarterback as Brayden Hoffman (6-2, 180, Sr.) delivers leadership as well as positive numbers totaling 705 yards through the air and 315 yards on the ground while accounting for 11 TDs. Wide receiver Zach Waldridge (6-0, 200, Sr.) and tight end Christian Dalpaos (6-1, 210, Sr.) are proven performer,s turning quick outs into longyardage gains. The development of the offensive line will be a key focus revolving around the efforts of Kolby Cato (5-10, 275, Sr.)

DEFENSE There’s no denying the physical nature of Savanna’s 3-4 defensive scheme with the brute strength and impact force created by the front seven, led by linebacker Christian Dalpaos, who combined for 110 tackles, four interceptions and fumble recoveries resulting in two defensive touchdowns. A silver medal winner last spring in the discus competition at the Class 2A state meet as well as fifth place result in the shot put, Dalpaos is more than just strong, using his balance to fight off opposing blockers and make the play. The return of Weston Martin (6-0, 190, Sr.) from an ACL

injury will be an added boost to the bite and bark of the “Dog Pound” defense. With closing speed and cover talents, Savanna’s secondary will be strong, led by strong safety Brayden Hoffman, who charted 100 tackles and four interceptions. Free safety Richie Williams grabbed another four pass thefts with 80 tackles, and cornerback Blake Cathey had six picks and scored two defensive touchdowns. “It’s a senior-laden team with experience and talents in key positions,” Bond said. “Their leadership and intensity gives us an advantage. We’re expecting something special this year.”

Joining the offensive skill positions will be Haven Barnes (5-9, 155, Jr.) IN the running game while Tanner Brown (60, 160, Sr.) and Mason Herring bring sure-handed receiver talents. The continued development of the offensive line will be key for the Savages to move the football as Quinton welcomes the return of Briar Needham (6-0, 230, Jr.) and Nate Taylor (6-1, 250, Jr.) to control the line of scrimmage. “Our ability to be successful putting points on the scoreboard will revolve

SNU Coach of the Month: Carrie Covey Panama By its definition, success is the accomplishment of an aim or purpose. And while every coach in any sport wants to win every game, the true measure of success for a high school coach is far more than just wins and losses, championship trophies and rings. Carrie Covey, now in her third year at Panama High School where she is the head coach for the Lady Razorbacks fastpitch and slowpitch softball teams as well as assistant basketball coach, approaches the expectations of her daily schedule as a coach, teacher, parent and wife with a game plan to make everyday better for everyone.

“I’m always talking to my players about getting better. I’ll ask them what did you learn today in practice, in a game or what we covered in class,” said Covey. “By empowering my players and students to learn something new everyday that will help them on and off the field as well as in life, then I’m achieving success. Covey’s coaching trail includes stops in Tahlequah (4 yrs) and Pocola (5 yrs)

prior to joining to Razorbacks along with her husband Dennis and three sons Tyson (11), Taylor (8) and Trevyr (5). Covey’s game plan for success is something she holds herself accountable to achieving including her quest to complete her Master of Arts in Educational Leadership through Southern Nazarene University. “I want to make a difference within the entire school district,” said Covey who will graduate in December. “I chose SNU because of their modular classes that allow me to focus on one class at time a time.”

With the daily management of her time schedule, Covey applauds the flexibility of the SNU program.

The game-night experience of quarterback Jared Tenequer (5-10, 165, Sr.) is a welcome advantage, along with the playmaking talents of Coby Grimsley (6-1, 170, Jr.), who will get multiple touches either at running back or receiver out of the Cats’ spread attack. Another sure handed target in Atoka’s passing game will be Lucas Brooks (6-1, 170, Jr.). The aggressiveness of Will Sandmann (6-2, 190, Sr.) and Darius Martinez (6-1, 200, Sr.) will bolster play in the trenches alongside veteran Israel Garcia (6-2, 230, Sr.). “The experience and continued development of the offensive line should be a plus for us,” Cordell said. “We want to spread the field and get the ball into our athletes’ hands. Jared’s tough-minded approach enables him to make the right reads and decisions and Coby proved last year he can create highlight-reel moments.” DEFENSE “Here we come…” will once again be the defensive game plan for Atoka’s defense that gets a boost from five returning starters. three-man front line where physicality will be premium. Sandman will join Matt Clay (5-10, 175, Sr.) to give Cordell’s attacking 3-3-5 lineup experience at linebacker. The athleticism of Brooks and Tenequer will solidify the Wampus Cats’ secondary unit against the pass or the run. “We’re a year older in every position,” Cordell said. “Not just by age but also we’ll be stronger and tougher, mentally and physically.” Another advantage for the Wampus Cats will be the home field advantage, where they play eight times this season after spending most of the last two years on the road. “We’re excited to play in front of our home fans,” Cordell said, “instead of spending every Friday night on the bus.”

COALGATE WILDCATS :

OFFENSE The tide has turned for success in Coalgate after earning back-to-back tickets to the Class A playoffs. And with the level of playmakers and overall experience, the Wildcats have high hopes for another winning season in 2017. The leader of the pack once again will be junior quarterback Austin Lambert (6-1, 190, Jr.), whose 60 percent completion rate totaled 1,880 yards and 21 touchdowns with only six interceptions in 160 attempts. A two-year starter with a rifle arm and quick release, Lambert already has committed to play baseball at OU. Running back Blade Horton (510, 200, Jr.) is a threat to take it to the house from anywhere on the field, evidenced by his 1,889 yards and 19 touchdowns last season. OFFENSE After spending the past two seasons as the

defensive coordinator, veteran coach Ray Richards moves to the top spot in 2017 with plans to restore the roar of Lions football. The former head coach at Southeastern State is taking step one by putting together a top notch coaching staff including longtime defensive guru Morris Sloan, whose coaching trail has prior travels through Southeastern as well as major college stops in addition to high school coaching in Oklahoma. The offensive lineup welcomes the return of four starters including quarterback Cade Buchanan (6-3,210, Jr.) who proved his talents by passing for 1,006 yards during his 10 starts as a sophomore. Primary targets in the Lions air attack will include Brandon Davis (5-9, 160, Sr.) who used his quickness to average 17.3 yards per catch along with Jenson Simmons (5-10, 165, Sr.) and Jeremy Seward (5-9, 170, Jr.) who recorded 10.1 yards per reception and display running back skills. Richards offensive playbook has Seward tabbed to share carries with Cade Ogden (5-10, 175, Sr.). The productivity of Durant’s offensive productivity will rely upon the ability to win the conflicts on the line of scrimmage where Braden Rudolf (5-10, 185, Sr.)

OFFENSE After a trip back into the Class 3A playoffs, the 2017 chapter of Wildcats football looks to write another exciting page, including a paragraph on head coach Drew Young taking the reins after serving as an assistant since 2011. With four starters returning to the offense, Young’s game plan is simple. “Wide open spread in multiple formations, anything from 3-back to empty sets,” the veteran coach said. “We want to give our skill players a chance to produce.” Young’s enthusiasm is fueled by the talents of DeKevis Jordan (5-11, 175, Sr.), who proved his highlight reel skills with a 272-yard singlegame effort as well as advancing to the state track meet last spring in the long jump. Another area of playmakers will include the pass-catching talents of Trevor Goff (5-10, 165, Sr.) as well as Traven Bagley (5-7, 155, Sr.), Asa Robertson (5-11, 160, So.) and Costa Chambers (5-11, 170, Sr.). DeKevis Jordan OFFENSE All indications out of the Redskins’ camp are that 2017 will be more than just another postseason playoff appearance. Among the four starters returning will be last year’s workhorse running back Garrett Voyles (5-10, 170, Jr.), who proved his talents with 1,808 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns. He gained more than 300 yards in each of Kingston’s final three regular-season contests to advance the Redskins into the Class 2A playoffs. The addition of quarterback Rylee Holmes (6-3, 185, Jr.), who passed for more than 1,000 yards in 2016, gives head coach John Caraway multiple play-calling options. The speed and sure handed skills of Stoney Lowe (5-11, 165, Sr.) can turn a first down catch into six points on the scoreboard. With the strength and mobility of Mike Skiles (6-1, 220, Sr.) and Nick Mizell (6-0, 220, Sr.) in the offensive line, the Redskins can win battles in the trenches. DEFENSE Playing with an edge of physicality combined

with speed and mobility, Kingston’s 3-3 odd-stack alignment will again create havoc. The monster in the middle is Dalton Williams (5-9, 215, Sr.), who charted 119 tackles last year and enters his third season in the lineup. The Redskins will rely upon the aggressive nature of their front trio, including defensive end Mason Rose (6-2, 175, Sr.), who totaled 37 tackles, Caleb Yeager (6-3, 240, So.), made 43 stops, and Zach Bradley (6-0, 300, Jr.). “This year’s defense is big up front, our linebackers are strong and hard-hitting and the secondary has the closing speed to defend the pass,” Caraway said. “We have a good nucleus of playmakers returning on both sides of the football. OFFENSE After an uncharacteristic losing season in 2015, the Savages jetted all the way to the Class A championship game last season before falling to Hominy. Wynnewood is again loaded with talent and experience with really just one question mark on offense: quarterback. That task will fall to T.J. Groves (6-1, 175, So.), who should give the Savages more of a throwing threat and a more balanced offense. Wynnewood certainly is blessed at running back, where leading rusher Marcus Knowles (5-8, 160, Sr.) is back after a 2016 campaign that saw him rush for more than 1,400 yards and 13 touchdowns. Also back to run out of the flexbone is Brody Odom (6-1, 200, Sr.), a VYPE Top 100 pick for 2017. He rushed for 759 yards and on defense had an amazing 149 tackles and five sacks. Odom comes by his talent naturally as his brother, Baron, now at Oklahoma State, was also a top 100 pick his senior year. Another Odom, Bo, is an upand-coming sophomore. “Brody is definitely our team leader both on and off the field and was last year as well,” said head coach Richard Norman. “He’s a fierce competitor and plays with the kind of aggressiveness that coaches like to see.” Karsten Mathis (6-4, 175, Sr.), who had 19 receptions last year, will be a big target for Groves. The Savages have four of their five starters back on the O-line, led by Rodney Knowles (6-0, 235, Sr.). DEFENSE Odom, Marcus Knowles and

Tyler Peters (6-0, 200, So.) all return at linebacker in the 3-5-3 defense, where they each had over 100 tackles last year. Mathis, who recorded 93 tackles in 2016, will be the senior leader in the Savages’ secondary, where he’s joined by Danchez Patterson (5-7, 150, So.). Wynnewood has the luxury of depth in the defensive line, where Norman plans a six-man rotation, including Rodney Knowles and Kaleb Patchel (6-4, 175, Jr.), who had 62 tackles at defensive end. With much of the talent returning from a defense that allowed less than 20 points per game last year, that number is likely to go down even lower this year. If Groves is able to take the reins at quarterback and progresses as Norman feels he will, the Savages look to be a sure bet to be playing for the gold ball again come December. OFFENSE After going two rounds deep into the playoffs for the first time since 2004, hopes are high in Pauls Valley as the Panthers return seven players on the offense this year. Quarterback Jack Grimmett 18

Marcus Knowles (6-1, 170, Jr.), who passed for 1,100 yards as a sophomore in 2016, returns as the field general for coach Matt Weber’s offense with a solid year of experience under his belt. The junior signal caller threw for 14 touchdowns with only eight interceptions last season. Grimmett’s confidence and passing abilities will again get the benefit of throwing to an experienced receiving crew in Jared Perry (5-11, 175, Sr.), Tyler Thompson (5-11, 165, Sr.) and Dalton Morse (5-9, 155, Sr.), as well as senior tight end Thomas Davenport, who at 6-foot3 presents a big target for Grimmett. Two-year starter Sebastian Cifuentes (5-9, 230, Sr.) will anchor the offensive line at one of the guard positions. A big question mark for the Panthers on offense will be finding a replacement at running back for the nowdeparted Colton Skadal. DEFENSE The experience level on the defense, with eight returning starters, is also excellent for Pauls Valley. Proof that dynamite comes in small but tough combinations, linebacker Tyler Thompson, who led Class 3A in tackles last year as a junior with 157 stops, will be the go-to guy for the Panthers’ defensive unit in his third season of creating game-changing defensive highlights. Perry and Cade Ensey will join Thompson in the linebacking crew, while Grimmett will do doubleduty from his safety position. Morse, who recorded eight interceptions last year, likewise will work on both sides of the ball as he returns to his cornerback spot. Two-year starter Tim Hutcheson (6-0, 225, Sr.) and Devon Taylor will be asked to put pressure on opposing quarterbacks up front.

OFFENSE Coach Michael Blackburn in 2017 celebrates his 25th year as a Stratford coach, his 15th as head coach. Last year the Bulldogs had to make the adjustment of moving from Class A to 2A and were still able to make it to the opening round of the playoffs. This year Blackburn will have to find a way to get there with a young team. Only four players with varsity experience are back for the offensive unit. It appears that Branum Dempsey (6-0, 200, Sr.) will get the nod at quarterback, although Dylan Evans (5-8, 150, Jr.) can play that spot, as well as running back and wide receiver, depending on where Blackburn needs him. The ground game will be in the hands of Gus Smith (5-8, 160, So.). Also back with some experience is Brody Savage (6-0, 220, Jr.), who will man the center spot for the Bulldogs. “Offensively, we’ll run out of the I-formation and we have a lot of young skill guys who will get their chance,” Blackburn said. “We’ll

DEFENSE The youth movement also will impact the Bulldog defense. There are some players who saw limited action last year that will be expected to pick up the mantle as starters in 2017. Savage is back at one of the linebacker spots, along with Smith. Both had nearly 50 tackles last season. Evans, who picked off three passes in 2016, will be the man in the secondary. OFFENSE If it’s not broke, then don’t fix it. That could be the approach for the Wolves entering 2017, except for the fact that Davis expects to be back in the running for winning the Class 2A state title. Briston Summers (5-10, 180, Sr.) once again will be one of the top offensive players in Class 2A following a 1,700-yard rushing effort in which he averaged 10.5 yards per carry and scored 31 touchdowns. OFFENSE The loud barking noise being heard day and night in Murray County is the expectations of the Sulphur Bulldogs, who enter 2017 with plenty of bite in their lineup. Fresh off his induction to the National High School Coaches Hall of Fame, Jim Dixon enters his 47th season at Sulphur with a senior-laden team capable of chasing the Class 3A gold ball. Seven starters return to the offensive unit, led by VYPE Top 100 choice Jacob Farrell (6-7, 290, Sr.), who after drawing multiple Division I offers verbally committed to Oklahoma State. Farrell and Eligio Nieves (5-9, 195, Sr.) create a dynamic duo on the offensive line. The explosiveness in the downhill running game will feature threeyear starter Trey Kiser (6-0, 200, Jr.), who has sprinter’s speed and toughness, proven by rushing for 1,380 yards and 19 touchdowns last year. DEFENSE Defense by domination best explains the characteristics of the Bulldogs’ 4-3 alignment that will showcase the bruising talents of nine returning starters. Four-year defensive end starter Dan Baker (5-9, 195, Sr.), who wants another piece of gold from football to go along with his two state wrestling championships, totaled 67 tackles off the edge, including five sacks in 2016, and joins Wyatt Parks (6-1, 175 Sr.), who returns a starter’s mentality at the opposite defensive end slot. The Bulldogs are deep in talent and experience at linebacker, where Trey Kiser is the ringleader with a team-high 109 tackles last year to go with a pair of interceptions and two defensive touchdowns. An area of issue for the spread attack will be the development of young offensive linemen as Tanner Woffard (5-9, 220, Sr.) captains the group to establish control of the line of scrimmage. “Our playmakers will give us options on offense allowing us to be more balanced,” said head coach Stephen Caldwell. DEFENSE Mustang coaches have issued the challenge to the defensive front trio to control the line of scrimmage where Jonathon Bailey (6-0, 240, Sr.) and Trapper Simpson (6-0, 220, Jr.) will be called upon to keep the corral gate closed. DEFENSE The names are pretty much the same on this side of the ball for the Tigers as they are on offense. Larney and Shull will be the up-front guys in the Konawa 4-2 scheme, which will be looked at to control the line of scrimmage. Stokes and Rutherford return as the heavy hitters at linebackers and Campbell and Kilpatrick will be the lockdown guys in the secondary. Obviously, depth will be a concern for Latimer as injuries to any of these guys means a loss on both sides of the ball. Working on that depth and breaking in a new quarterback will be the big tasks for Latimer and his staff when fall practice begins.

DEFENSE The Wolverines’ defensive scheme revolves around the 10-1 principles, an old school approach of playing a physical and attack style defense regardless of the alignment. Linebackers Chase Gibbs, who totaled 61 tackles last season, and Brand Giles and Cale Shepherd (5-9, 160, Jr.) will lead the Holdenville assault while Mikey Hamilton and Bailey Mairel anchor the defensive front line. But on the plus side, that quarterback will have talented game-breaking receivers to throw to in J.J. Harris (6-2, 190, Sr.) and Quinton Owens (5-10, 170, Jr.). Holding down the fort in the middle of the offensive again will be talented center Jordan Kelly (6-0, 215, Sr.). The Savages are expecting big things from big tackle Eric Brown (6-3, 255, Jr.). Another game breaker returning for Broken Bow is running back Cason Brewster (6-3, 215, Sr.), whose size and strength bolsters the running attack out of the I-formation while also giving a good passing target. Speedy Cody Green (6-0, 175, Jr.) also is expected to play a role in the running game.

OFFENSE In what should have been at least somewhat of a rebuilding year in 2016, the Warriors played their way to the second round of the Class 3A playoffs. This season they return five offensive starters, including three in the

offensive line. Dustin McAdory (510, 175 Sr.) takes over quarterback duties and his development will be a big key to Idabel’s success this year. Coach Dennis Parker puts a lot of faith in McAdory at the QB spot as he feels the Warriors will throw the ball more this year. There will be a couple of receivers returning who can break the big play at any time with lightning speed in Tyrone Howell (6-3, 190, Sr.) and LaQuan Wells (5-9, 165, Jr.). Up front, the Warriors

welcome back center Jake McLain (5-10, 175, Sr.) as well as Arron Hilton (5-10, 230, Sr.) at guard and tackle Tyler Sivard (6-3, 220, Jr.).

DEFENSE With eight returning starters, the defense will be called on to quiet opposing offenses. The Warriors will rely on a speedy secondary to blanket receivers and come up quickly for run support. Dalton Harper (5-10, 175, Sr.), with a year of experience, and Jhedi Harjo (5-10, 175, Jr.) man the safety spots. A pair of battle-tested seniors return to hold things down at linebacker in Markell Lewis (6-0, 170, Sr.) and Steven Bennett (5-10, 175, Sr.). And in the down position in the Warriors’ 4-3 set,

a pair of starters are back in big defensive end Donte Reece (6-3, 285, Jr.) and defensive tackle C.J. Frost (6-3, 280, Sr.). OFFENSE It’s a good news-bad news situation for the Buffaloes as the 2017 season gets set to unfold. The good news is that Hugo has most of its skilled position players returning from last season. Chief among those is quarterback Matt Bray (6-1, 175, Jr.), who got some valuable experience as the signal caller last season. While he’s expected to really come in to his own, he’ll have plenty of help in the backfield with the return of Trey Jordan (5-10, 175, Sr.), who had 825 yards rushing and another 411 in receiving yards last season. Head coach Lloyd Smith is expecting big things from this dual threat player in 2017. Sophomore Will King also picked up some varsity time last season at running back as he compiled over 500 yards rushing with six touchdowns for the Buffaloes. He also can spell Bray at quarterback if needed. The bad news is that most of the offensive line will be young and inexperienced as only two players are back in the trenches. Joshua Singchatha (510, 215, Jr.) and Ryan Baker (6-1, 225, Jr.) will be called on to bring their trenchmates along quickly as the season progresses.

Running out of a one-back set, Smith knows he’ll have some playmakers but will have to coach up the front guys. “We’ve got a good group of skilled players which we must distribute the ball to effectively,” Smith said, “but our offensive line and tight end spots will take time to develop with only two starters back there from last year.”

DEFENSE The situation is very much the same on defense as on offense. Hugo will have a talented secondary, which will be the strength of this unit. Jordan, who had 33 tackles, including two for loss, will be joined at defensive back by returning starters Dante Dangerfield (5-9, 165, Jr.), who had a pair of sacks and three interceptions last year, and Jordan Barker (6-1, 150, So.). Also back in the fold the Buffaloes are linebacker/ defensive end Chance Frost (5-10, 175, Jr.), who registered a pair of sacks and three tackles for loss last year, and Bubba Benson (5-9, 175, So.), who saw some limited action last year. But again, experience and depth in the line will be the question marks for Smith and his staff as Frost is the only Buffalo with playing time in the defensive front. “The success of our season will depend on how fast our youth can come of age,” Smith said. “We feel that our skill players can make plays in open space for us if we can effectively get them the ball.” SCHEDULE

OFFENSE The Bearcats, who continued their streak of reaching the Class 2A playoff party last year by advancing to the quarterfinal round, expect to continue their winning ways as head coach Kenny Speer enters his fifth season on the sidelines. The return of six playmakers to the spread attack features the dynamic duo of Kyler Gee (5-10, 165, Sr.) at running back and Kaden Speer (5-9, 165, Jr.) managing the game at quarterback. Gee has totaled more than 2,700 yards in the past two seasons, including a 1,615 yard campaign with 22 touchdowns last year, while Speer totaled 1,275 yards passing and completed 70 percent of his attempts. A primary target at receiver, Hunter Simpson (5-7, 160, Sr.) provides quickness on pass routes capable of turning short catches into touchdowns, along with Kyle Schier (5-8, 165, Sr.). Add to the offense the gamebreaker talents of Zion

Trey Jordan Wood (6-0, 190, Jr.), whose speed and athletic skills create hard to defend matchups. Cason Akard (6-1, 240, Sr.) who consistently wins the physical battles on the line, is the lone returning starter as Trent Young (5-10, 240, Jr.) and Justin Trammell (6-0, 265, Sr.) compete to earning starting duties. “We’ve got the playmakers to maintain a balanced attack,” Speer said.

DEFENSE Man-up pass coverage while the linebackers run downhill will be the defensive scheme for the Bearcats 4-3 alignment. Linebacker Matt Bloodworth (5-10, 170, Sr.), who averaged 10.5 tackles per game with six sacks last year, leads the charge. “Matt is a prototype linebacker, hard working with a nose for the football,” Speer said. The aggressive nature of Cason Gee (6-2, 195, So.), who totaled 34 tackles, will combo with Cason Akard at defensive end while Justin Trammell

plugs the middle of the front line. Depth will be a plus for a Bearcats defense that totaled 21 turnovers in 2016 as Kyler Gee, who led the team in interceptions, joins forces with Zion Wood to deliver a physical and fast cover/run stopping combination, along with Kaden Speer and Hunter Simpson, whom Speer names as the best cover man in the secondary. “We want to initiate the contact and swarm all 11 players to the ball,” Speer said. “We have to continue to focus on doing the little things right that let us build our success and take first things first. Quietly with respect, junior quarterback Matt Bray is a student of the game. Coach Smith is confident in Bray’s playmaking abilities as well as his decision making. “He lets his action do all his talking,” confirmed Smith. “Matt’s the kind of young man that not only tried to make himself better but also everyone else

around him both on and off the field.”

A multi-sport standout, Trey Jordan enters his senior season with a proven performance chart of success. Last spring Jordan’s speed helped the 4x100 and 4x200 meter relay teams qualify for the state track meet. This fall, Jordan will employ his explosive speed and quick cut abilities to create a mismatch against opposing defenders as a slot receiver plus captain the defensive secondary at safety.

Smith also credits Jordan, the team’s lone senior this year, as the team leader. “Trey has an outgoing type personality that kids naturally gravitate toward, they want to be around him,” said the Hugo coach now in his second season. “And as his coach, I know that we can rely upon Trey to be the motivation to the younger players to raise their expectations for

Matt Bray success and achievements.”

With the influence of Matt Bray and Trey Jordan as examples, the outlook for success continues to grow at Hugo.

“Together, Matt and Trey model what we want to be the face of Buffaloes football in the future,” commended Smith. “They’re proving the value of making Character Counts.”
