By Cal Ross As the Gatorade shower commenced, MacArthur coach Brett Manning soaked in the moment. “I welcomed it,” Manning said of his Gatorade bath. “After coming up short so many times, it feels amazing to finally earn that gold ball.” MacArthur faced Skiatook on Dec. 6 at Yukon High School for the 5A State Championship. When the night was over, the MacArthur Highlanders, led by quarterback and VYPE Mr. Football finalist Will Collins, stood tall as the 5A champions by a score of 39-12. This championship has been a long time coming for MacArthur. The Highlanders had made six appearances in the championship game before this year, and they came up short all six times. Manning played for MacArthur for one, and was an assistant coach for another. Now, as the head coach, he has completed his mission to bring a football championship home to MacArthur. “This one is really special for our guys,” Manning said. “We’ve had a lot of good teams come through VYPEOK.COM

MacArthur, but this team worked exceptionally hard.” The Highlanders followed the lead of Collins. His outstanding leadership throughout the season, and into the playoffs, was a driving force behind MacArthur’s success. “Most high school players have ups and downs,” Manning said of his quarterback. “Will was not one of those players. He had no downs. He was so solid throughout the entirety of the season.” In the semifinals of the state tournament, MacArthur faced McAlester in an overtime shootout. With a chance to go to the state finals on the line, Collins threw for six touchdowns, and led MacArthur to a 50-49 win. “He did everything a mature player does,” Manning said. “He watched film, he practiced hard every day and he always made sure his teammates were prepared. He was the ultimate leader.” This championship is important to more people than just Manning’s team. The entire MacArthur community enjoyed this victory according to the man who has

spent a lifetime as a Highlander. “It’s a school-wide championship,” Manning said. “We have a close-knit group of coaches who want to see our kids succeed. The teachers, other students and coaches really wanted this one for the kids on our team.” As for next year’s title defense, Manning is taking some time to enjoy this victory. Manning said he was not expecting the fanfare that came the week after winning the trophy. His players have began lifting weights to prepare for the offseason, but the training for next season heats up after Christmas break.

SWOK BASKETBALL PREVIEW

LAWTON WOLVERINES Website: www.lhswolverines.org GIRLS Marco Gagliardi 13-14 Record: 13-11

Outlook: The Lady Wolverines finished last year with a record just above .500 last season and return just two starters. Despite his team’s youth, head coach Marco Gagliardi is enthusiastic to get on the floor and see what his team can do. “We are young, talented and short, but we can shoot it pretty well. I’m excited to see the potential of this team,” Gagliardi said. VYPE Top 100 selection Bailee Cox (5-5, Sr.) will start at guard and is the Lady Wolverines leader offensively. Last season Cox averaged 14.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game and according to her coach has improved this offseason and should see those numbers go up. Also starting at guard this year will be Southmoore transfer Hayley Eaves (5-5, So.). In the frontcourt Dottie Henning (5-9, Sr.) is the team’s captain and brings a great deal of leadership to the team. Henning is also productive on the floor and averaged 9.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. Caitlyn Cox (5-8, Jr.) spent her fall as the kicker for the Lawton football team and is another athletic forward that will start for the Lady Wolverines. Rounding out the Lawton rotation will be Joy Rhodes, Shilyn Freeman, Demi Woods and Shannon Gonzalez. While it’s not clear which

Outlook: The Wolverines are still a team trying to find an identity. After going 13-11 last season Lawton will be looking to improve with a roster that includes a fair amount of question marks. Last season’s leading scorer Dakari Moss graduated after last season leaving the Wolverines searching for someone to step into that role. One possible candidate for that job may be senior Darreyl Patterson who averaged 12.9 points and 6.1 rebounds per game last year. Other possible players the Wolverines may turn to this year are seniors Bryce Birt, Chris Jones and Kalin Sadler.

Meanwhile on the interior MacArthur will count on Lauren Henry (5-7, So.), who averaged 5.5 points per game last year, and Briana Anderson (5-7, Sr.) who averaged 2.8 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. Outlook: Just a year separated from a 19 win season the Lady Highlanders bring back three starters and are looking for another successful season and a deep playoff run. Head coach Danny Garza said it is the attitude his team displays that has him looking forward to getting back on the hardwood. “I’m very excited because we have a group of ladies that are very coachable and have great attitudes. When that happens great things can happen during the season,” Garza said. Guard Yoshika Thomas (5-5, Jr.) is the player who drives the bus for the Lady Highlanders and can break down defenses either off the dribble or as a deadly threepoint shooter. EISENHOWER EAGLES Website: www.ikeeagles.org GIRLS Shawn Delorio 13-14 Record: 17-6

Outlook: The Lady Eagles lost a good amount of seniors last season and will be in somewhat of a rebuilding year according to head coach Shawn Delorio. Expectations are still high for the Lady Eagles though as they drop down to Class 5A after being just one win away from the 6A state tournament a year ago. Center and VYPE Top 100 selection, Crystal Polk (6-1, Sr.) is a prolific scorer and rebounder and will make a huge impact each and every night. Last season Polk, who is also a University of Tulsa commit, averaged 22 points and 12 rebounds per game. Head coach Bruce Harrington believes that despite losing a very proficient group of seniors last year the Eagles could once again compete for a gold ball this year. “We are replacing a very talented graduating class. We will be contenders if our seniors step up in the leadership department,” Harrington said. Guards Jamey Woods (6-3, Sr.) and Darius Roy (6-3, Jr.) will both be players to watch in the backcourt this year. Last season Woods averaged 13 points and four rebounds per game while Roy averaged six points and four assists per contest. Romio Harvey (6-1, So.) is also a player who could play big minutes this year in the backcourt. Hartman is extremely athletic and can score from anywhere on the court while Downes is a tremendous all-around performer and one of the best three-point shooters in the class. Look for even bigger things from Bryce Willis (8.0 ppg), Tripp West (7.0 ppg, 7.0 reb) and Braden Mitchell (3.0 ppg, 5.0 asst). Merritt Basketball Ready to Take the Next Step Oilers, Lady Oilers both looking to continue to improve

The Merritt boys have been to the state tournament in each of the last two seasons and this year have the same lofty goals as Donnie Husband takes over as the head coach after winning back-toback state titles at Latta. Through eight games this season Husband and the Oilers went 6-2 to earn a No. 14 ranking in Class 2A. Among those six wins was an early win over Mangum and wins over Hammon and Leedey in the Five County Tournament. Overall the Oilers are averaging 46.8 points per game this season which is a dip from last year when they averaged 53.9 points per game on their way to a 24-3 overall record. On the girls side of things the Lady Oilers are 3-5 through their first eight games with wins over Canute, Snyder

and Cheyenne JV. One positive for the Lady Oilers is that out of their five losses none have come by more than 10 points. Another positive is that last season the

Lady Oilers won 15 games and averaged 36.3 points per game. This year the Oilers are already averaging 37.25 points per contest, showing that they are continuing to improve offensively.

Outlook: The Big Elks shocked some people last season by advancing all the way to the Class 4A semifinals last season but with three starters returning next season the Elks will have a serious target on their back. Despite that target head coach Lucian Bliss is optimistic about what his team can accomplish this year. “We are returning a great core group from last year’s team. We should be a very good defensive team, be able to control the boards and be balanced on the offensive end,” Bliss said. One major reason the Elks will be able to control the boards is VYPE Top 100 selection Destry Kelley (6-5, Sr.). Kelley averaged a double-double last year with 13.3 points and 10 rebounds per game and could very well increase both those numbers this year. Shayne Thornton (6-3, Jr.) is another big factor in the paint and on the glass after averaging 5.2 points and 4.5 rebounds per game last year. Guard Cameron Rogers (5-8, Sr.) will be the team’s anchor on the perimeter this season and a deadly weapon if opponents try to focus to much attention on stopping Kelley and Thornton. A year ago Rogers averaged 7.1 points and 4.9 assists per game and should score more this season with the departure of star guard Luke Lewallen. Cody Patton (5-10, Sr.) and Caedon David (6-1, So.) meanwhile will round out the projected starting five for the Elks. Finished the year strong after starting 3-9 last year and have almost our entire team back. We still just have one senior this year,” said coach Tompkins. Aspen Nix (16ppg, 8rpg) is the leading scorer for the Wildcats and could become a doubledouble player this year. Nix established herself as a scorer last season and had several games where she scored 25 or more. Shahnoa Williams (5ppg) is the lone senior in the starting lineup. Outlook: A quintet of seniors will provide the majority of experience for the Lady Reds this season as head coach Nathan Meget takes the reins. Kayla Reynolds, a 5-10 senior, is the lone returning starter but the experience gained last season should benefit Clinton as 5-10 center Carly Koons, 5-6 guard Madison Moore and 5-6 guard Keke Sutton enter their senior seasons. Reynolds, according to Meget, is the type of player that has the versatility to score off the dribble or pull up outside while creating a defensive impact to every contest. Adding an energetic boost to this year’s success will be the play of 5-4 sophomore guard Tink Meeks along with “sixth man” influence from Le’Anna Bell, Sierra Malone and Jerimonte

Outlook: Jeff Zinn returns four starters to a lineup that finished as the state tournament runner-ups in Class 4A in 2014. Zinn has had tremendous success at the helm of the Lady Warriors. He has a 53-7 record in the past two seasons. Among those returning is senior and ORU commit Ashley Beatty, who is one of the best defensive players in the state with 5 steals per game. Joining Beatty are three players who are no stranger to the starting lineup. Junior guard Tandra King, senior guard Cara Osceola and senior Kassidy Williams are all returning

from last year’s runnerup team. Junior forward Aaliyah White, who will be featured in the starting lineup, was forced to sit out last season because she did not get a hardship after transferring to Anadarko. The Lady Warriors have the depth necessary to make another run for the 4A state title. “We will be rotating a minimum nine players and possibly 10 or 11 that can play,” Zinn said. “Nine players gained valuable playing experience last year and are all much improved. CHICKASHA FIGHTIN’ CHICKS Website: www.chickasha. k12.ok.us GIRLS Kirk Reimers 13-14 Record: 12-14

Outlook: The Lady Chicks extremely challenging schedule turned out to be a positive last year when they advanced all the way to the Class 5A state tournament. This season Chickasha drops into Class 4A but will still be playing the same challenging schedule as last year, something head coach Kirk Reimers hopes benefits his team once again. “”We are pretty optimistic. We are playing a tougher than nails schedule. Night in and night out we will have to play well to win but that should only make us better come playoff time,” Reimers said. Leading the way for the Lady Chicks this year will be VYPE Top 100 Selection Dominique Golightly (510, Jr.). Golightly will run a point-forward spot for the Lady Chicks this year that will showcase her versatility as a big, long guard who can shoot, pass, rebound and handle the basketball. Also on the perimeter this year will be guard Jackie Ramos (5-8, Sr.).

In the frontcourt the Lady Chicks will showcase some good size and length that should help them be a very strong defensive group. Center Taylor Sylvester (6-4, Jr.) will headline that group of post players. Forwards Hanna Ferguson (5-11, Jr.) and Meredith Noland (5-9, So.) will also play crucial roles for the Lady Chicks this season. Outlook: The Chickasha boys will be under new leadership this year as Wes Pulliam takes over as head coach after spending the last ten seasons as the head man at Newcastle. Pulliam takes over a roster that contains a good amount of sophomores and juniors and says the team’s tough schedule should be a major plus in their favor when the postseason rolls around. “We are young but have some experience. The best thing for us could just be

dropping to 4A. Playing in the Suburban Conference will be tough but should really prepare us come playoff time,” Pulliam said. Leading the team this year are guards Brock Henderson (6-0, So.) and Brandon Shumway. Henderson is a dynamic scorer who can fill it up against any opponent. USAO MEN Coach Hall: ‘It’s their team and their season’ In a season of transition, the men’s basketball team at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma has the potential for a strong season through toughness and consistent effort, said Doug Hall, head basketball coach.

Since Hall joined the team about the time school started, he really had to hit the ground running, learning what his team was capable of and where to put the pieces to create success. “I feel like our team is making slow, steady progress each day,” he said. “As a staff, we are trying to get them to understand the value of each possession and the importance of competing at a high level every time they step on the floor.”

As the preseason came to a close, Hall said he believes the team’s efforts will show as the season developments. “I’m just excited for the players. It’s their team and their season,” he said. “I think they will get out of it what they put into it.”

The Drovers went 15-15 (10-10) during the 2013-14 campaign, which ended in the SAC Semifinals. The Drovers graduated key seniors from that team, however, including an All-American and an All-Conference athlete. Without those starters, the Drovers will look to their six returners to fill in the gaps. “Our strength, at least right now, is our backcourt. We have a solid group of guards,” Hall said.

In addition to the returners, the Drovers brought in eight new players, including three freshmen, two sophomores and three seniors. “Our goals this season are to play as close to our maximum potential as possible, compete and play hard and have fun doing it,” Hall said. “We have a good group and some talented athletes. I hope people will come out and support them.” Admission to all home USAO basketball games is $5 for adults and $3 for students and seniors. USAO faculty, staff and students enjoy free admission

USAO woMen ‘Learning about each other’ key to 2014-15 Drovers

The 2014-15 women’s basketball team at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma spent mid-fall molding as a team in preparation for the Drovers’ season. “We are excited about the upcoming season. We have been battling several early season injuries but should have everyone back within the next couple weeks,” said Jennifer Hayden, USAO head women’s basketball coach. “I expect us to play hard every game and to be competitive.”

Last year, the Drovers struggled through a short bench and injuries all season. Before the season began, Hayden lost two likely starters to season-stopping injuries. With only a handful of subs available, other athletes battled stress injuries as the season progressed. But this season’s, Hayden said, depth will play a big factor in the Drovers’ success.

“We worked really hard on this year’s recruiting class and were excited to sign seven transfers and five freshmen,” she said. “We are looking for all seven transfers to make an immediate impact on our team. We also have a couple freshmen who are developing well and pushing for playing time.” This year, USAO has just two players who have seen significant time on the floor as a Drover.

“Our obvious weakness right now is being a virtually

new team so we don’t have any real game time playing experience together, which is why our scrimmages are so important to us this year,” Hayden explained. “The more we play, the more they are learning about each other and improving as a team.” The Drovers had two scrimmages this month before season begins.

Hayden begins her third season with the Drovers. In her first two seasons, she saw the Drovers to back-toback SAC tournaments and had three players named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes.

After a summer that saw 10 players see significant playing time in a five in, five out philosophy the depth has developed giving coach Lester a number of options for the starting line up each game. The hardnosed toughness of Madi Brien (5-5, Sr.) will give the team a well-rounded player to lean on early in the season. In the final month of her junior year, Brien averaged 10 points per game leaving high expectations for the senior guard out of the gate this season. Sisters Candace (5-4, Jr.) and Mona Pierson (5-9, So.) should raise the level of the Lady tigers this season with even more defined roles. The elder Pierson averaged 4 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2steals last year while Mona had an excellent summer of development. Emily McAdoo (5-7, Sr.) is a strong player on the glass along with Hannah Owen (5-9, Jr.) both of whom will look to increase their offense from the forward spot. Karley Griffin (5-4, Sr.) and Lexi Rumbaugh (5-5, Sr.) provide excellent experience as does Brooke Woodyard (5-3, Sr.). Outlook: After being one game away from the State Tournament last season the Tigers are ready to pounce on the opportunity this year led by Tyler Lester (5-10, Sr.). The senior guard finished second in the state for 3-pointers made with 90 while shooting 30 fewer shots than the leader who finished with 91. Lester averaged 18.1 points while shooting over 40 percent from both the field and behind the arc. Jett Jobe (6-4, Sr.) will man the other guard spot but can play anywhere on the court for the Tigers. Last year Jobe averaged 14.3 points per game while shooting 50 percent from the field while connecting on 38 percent on 3-pointers. With his excellent size and skill set Jobe is a dangerous player to defend and tallied a 2:1 assist to turnover ratio last season. Rounding out the backcourt will be Taylor Newport (6-0, Sr.) who is a very sure thing from the charity stripe. In the front court the Tigers will look towards Brantley Thompson (6-4, So.) and Trysten Thompson (6-4, Sr.) at the forward spots. Brantley averaged just 3.4 points per game last season as a freshman but should see his output increase as a sophomore. Trsyten averaged 11.3 points per game while hitting over 50 percent from the field and pulling down six rebounds per game. Outlook: After back-to-back 20win seasons, the expectations for continued success continue to grow for the Lady Redskins as two starters combined with a cast of experienced players return for head coach Rick Parrish. Jacy Cullers, a 5-6 guard who averaged 15.4 points last season, can score at the rim as well as continue to put threes on the scoreboard from the outside while 5-10 sophomore Jordan Brooks will again be asked to control play on the blocks after averaging 18.2 points per game last year. Also expected to produce points and defensive skills is a 5-8 senior forward K’Leigh Jordan (4.2ppg). A pair of sophomores guards Lexi Large and Mikayla Nichols will bolster play on the edge along with 5-6 freshman Autumn Mathis. “The fact that we return experienced players is a bonus,” said Parrish. “There’s far more than just two starters that can play in our lineup. Outlook: The Lady Panthers are always a solid group and a tough test on anybody’s schedule but this year they will be very young with only one returning starter. Head coach Bo Thomason says to combat their youth the Lady Panthers will need to be a defensive-minded team. “We have a lot of inexperience so

early on that will be something we battle. We will have to lean heavily on our defense,” Thomason said. The Lady Panthers will get a big boost on the perimeter from Suzanne Parker (5-9, Sr.), the team’s only returning starter. Denae Nichols (5-10, Sr.) and Ashley Kemp (5-6, Fr.) will also see big minutes in the Am-Po backcourt this season. The Lady Panthers will also have an advantage in the frontcourt due to two players with some serious length protecting the rim. Alyssa Lewis (6-0, So.) will start at one forward spot while Makenna Prickett (5-11, Jr.) will give the Lady Panthers an upperclassman in the paint. Off the bench expect Kailee Childers (5-11, Jr.) and Rabecca Akins (5-7, Sr.) to be major contributors and possibly push to get into the starting rotation. Outlook: Over the past two years the Lindsay Leopardettes have won 40 games and lost just 16. This year head coach Jon Jacques is expecting more big things from his ultraexperienced roster. “This senior group has been a big part of the Leopardettes success. This group is seeking their fourth area tournament appearance and second state tournament appearance,” Jacques said. The biggest piece of the puzzle for the Leopardettes will be Whitney Metker (5-10, Sr.). A versatile athlete Metker can play either guard or forward and averaged 12 points and nine rebounds per game last year. If Metker can continue to put up those types of numbers she will also become the school’s alltime leading rebounder. Guards Morgan Moore (5-5, Sr.), Ellanee Allison (5-5, Sr.) and Jill Ogletree 5-6, Jr.) will all also play big roles in the Lindsay lineup this year. Forward Ashlynn Cummins (5-10, Jr.) and guard Cali Clingman (5-5, Jr.) are other players to watch as both come of season-ending injuries last year.

We are building on 16 wins from last year and should be much improved,” Chapman said. The team’s biggest impact player may be junior forward Connor Karpe who transfers in from Lookeba-Sickles where he averaged 25 points per game in the state tournament last year and helped his former team finish as state runner-up in Class B. Guard Kaden Verble (6-1, Jr.) is another player to watch after he averaged 10.1 points and 4.6 rebounds a game as a sophomore. Senior Garrett Verble averaged 9.0 points and 6.0 rebounds a game a year ago and will get the nod at center for Lindsay. Outlook: Comanche head coach Sean Hushbeck is building a program based on athleticism and size. Younger players need to mature early, but coach Hushbeck is optimistic his team will find ways to win. “We are a very young group but extremely athletic and fast. Our three juniors have played a lot of varsity basketball over the last two years. We will have to rely on them, while the young girls learn to handle the atmosphere and intensity at this level. Last year Kelly averaged 8.8 points and 2.3 assists per game but her biggest strength may be her ability as an on-ball defender. Janz, a VYPE Top 100 selection, is also a great defender but also a great shooter who shot 41 percent from behind the threepoint line last year. In the post Erick will turn to Heidi Brinkley (5-10, Jr.) and Abby Millar (5-10, So.). Brinkley was the team’s sixth man last season and averaged 4.4 points and 3.0 rebounds per game. Millar meanwhile is extremely quick and a very good rebounder that will keep opposing coaches up at night. Outlook: In head coach Kyle Williams’ first year at Erick the Bearcats will be trying to build on the foundation laid by last season’s 12-15 team. “We are expecting to build on the way the team finished a year ago. I believe we will be competitive and have an opportunity for success every night we step on the floor,” Williams said. Point guard Garrett Cox (6-0, Sr.) will be the straw that stirs the drink this year for the Bearcats after averaging 16.2 points and 8.5 rebounds a game last year. Joining Cox on the perimeter will be Austin Gipson-Black (5-9, Sr.0 and Landon Perry (5-9, Sr.). Inside fans can expect Randi Gipson-Black (6-0, Sr.) to be the Bearcats rudder in the paint. Last season Gipson Black averaged 3.3 points and 4.4 rebounds per game and will be expected to increase that production this year. Davis Mayfield (6-3, So.) will start at center for the Bearcats and give the team a boost in the length department. Garrett Cox 6-0 PG Sr. Randi Gipson-Black 6-0 F Sr. Austin Gipson-Black 5-9 SG Sr.

Outlook: Running a more productive offense is the goal of first year head coach Joe Knapp. With five returning players to the starting lineup and plenty of senior leadership, being more productive should come a little easier this season. Nichole Means (5-6, Jr.) averaged 18 points per game last year and has the ability to score from anywhere on the floor. Making her return to the team is McKensi Laughlin (5-10, Jr.) after suffering an injury last season. The Means/ Laughlin combo is like instant potatoes, just add a little water and watch it work. Jordyn Clark (5-11, Sr.) may be the answer to the rebound questions for coach

Knapp. Add seniors Maddie Norman (5-2) and Katlynn Huckabay (5-6) to the lineup and you have yourself a good group of girls ready to take on anyone willing to step on the court. “We will control what we can control. Out 6th man could be any number of players including Olivia Taylor, Loclynn Lively, Madi Smith or August Hopper. With the return of Laughlin, Means should be able to run the offense with more productivity,” said coach Knapp. Nichole Means 5-6 Jr. McKensi Laughlin 5-10 Jr. Jordyn Clark 5-11 Sr. Maddie Norman 5-2 Sr. Katlynn Huckabay 5-6 Sr. Olivia Taylor Loclynn Lively Madi Smith August Hopper

Outlook: The Tigers enter the 2014-15 season with three returning starters to the lineup. Sawyer Toole (5-10, Sr.) is back and leads all returning players

in scoring after averaging 15 points and 3.0 rebounds a game last year. Toole is joined in the backcourt by Blake Ramirez (510, Sr.) who averaged 11 points and 3.0 assists per contest. Hunter Laughlin (5-10, Jr.) and Xavy Pineda (6-0, Jr.) bring toughness and solid defensive play to the court. Bryce Peeler (6-0, So.) will add 4.0 points a night. Kolby Lanning and Austin Warner will add depth and give coach Pennypacker two consistent players off the bench. Outlook: The Lady Bombers picked up valuable experience a season ago and will look to four returning starters to greatly improve on their five victories. At 6-1, senior Courtney Haynes (9.0 ppg, 11.0 reb, 5.0 blks) is a huge force inside on both ends of the floor. Faith Roady (6.0 ppg, 6.0 reb, 5.0 asst) adds great quickness and playmaking ability on the perimeter. Starla Hicks (6.0 ppg, 9.0 reb) plays much bigger than her size and will have a chance for several doubledoubles as well. Several athletic underclassmen are also expected to contribute. Thompson also grabbed 74 steals and accounted for 64 assists last year. Miranda Stevenson (10.2ppg, 4.5rpg) will start at guard. Last year the senior had 94 steals of her own. The pair can create turnovers and force the transition game. Aspen Hall (8.2ppg, 4.1rpg) and Sydney Shaw (6.2ppg, 6.2rpg) give the Lady Tigers two solid players on both ends of the court. ARDMORE TIGERS Website: www.Ardmore.org GIRLS Debra Manley 13-14 Record: 11-14

Outlook: Coach Debra Manley takes over the Lady Tigers program this season and is working on implementing her system. With a new coach and new system the players are adjusting while also learning their roles as the team develops together.

“We don’t have a ‘go to’ player at this moment and it’s going to take all of us executing and performing to our potential to get the job done,” explained the first year head coach for the Tigers.

With three returning starters from last year’s team coach Manley believes there are about eight players that could start for her squad this season. Christa Pickens (5-6, So.) will look to continue her development in just her second year of high school. She’ll be joined in the backcourt by Christin Russell (5-7, Sr.) and Nakevia Davis (5-0, Jr.). At forward J’Sades Ainsworth (5-7, Fr.) is a young player that has good size while Zoe’ Booker (5-9, Jr.) could develop into a force in the post. Look for Kyla Stapleton to be a strong option off the bench if she doesn’t earn a starting spot. “We have a good nucleus of role players that if we come together as a team have the potential to be pretty good this year,” coach Manley said of her Tigers’ squad. “We have size and quickness. We are going to have to develop our shooting as we progress and also rely heavy on our defense to win games.”

Outlook: Four starters return for the Tigers this season and as head coach Mark Wilson enters his 13th season he discussed what lies ahead for his team, “We have tons of experience returning as we only graduated one senior from last year. This year’s seniors have played most off the minutes the past two years.”

Two seniors that averaged around nine points a game each last season return in guard Anthony Willis (6-2, Sr.) and forward Chantz White (6-3, Sr.). Both also added around two assists and three rebounds a game last season giving the Tigers added experience. A pair of pass first guards return in point man Jerod Gregoire (5-9, Sr.) and Keyshaun Brown (6-0, Sr.) as they averaged 4.5 and 3.4 assists per game respectively. Gregoire added 6.5 points and 2.5 rebounds to his ledger while Brown scored just over seven points a game to go with 2.8 boards. The player to keep an eye on is forward Marvin Johnson (6-3, So.) as he returns after an almost breakout freshman campaign. Johnson averaged 10.1 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game last season and should he become more consistent those numbers will only increase. Johnson could develop into a special player over the course of his prep career. The Tigers are a deep squad that will call upon their senior

Outlook: Plainview returns five players to the court with starting experience. For head coach Andy Bloodworth that means his team is loaded with players that know the system and know how to contribute to the team’s success. “We return every single player from last year, plus a few additions. Our inaugural season in Class 4A we gained a lot of experience playing with two juniors and the rest were sophomores and freshmen. We are looking forward to being right in the mix of things this year,” said coach Bloodworth. Hayden Hunt (9.3ppg, 2.2rpg, 1.6apg) brings senior leadership to the court and is a scoring threat from her guard position. Megan Shelton (13.6ppg, 8.0rpg, 4.1apg) joins Hunt in the backcourt. Shelton brings accuracy and a willingness to get in the paint and bang for rebounds. Hannah Ross (6.4ppg, 3.7rpg, 2.0apg) rounds out this trio of talented guards. Between the triplets, coach Bloodworth has everything you want in a backcourt. Rebecca

Hayden Hunt Wright (11.6ppg, 8.1rpg, 2.4bpg) and Ally Parham (10.0ppg, 6.1rpg, 3.5apg) can play inside or out on the perimeter. This Plainview team is mentally tough and will outwork opponents. Healdton Bulldogs

Website: www.healdtonschools.org GIRLS Mike Phillips 13-14 Record: 17-8 Outlook: Seeing their season come to an end in the first round of the area tournament did nothing but motivate the Lady Bulldogs for this season. With three starters back and a starting lineup full of upperclassmen head coach Mike Phillips is already looking forward to what this year has in store. “We’re excited about this year’s group of girls. They work extremely hard and have a passion for the game,” Phillips said. A very talented group of guards will be the go to players for the Lady Bulldogs this year. Led by Abbie Etter (5-5, Jr.) and Cara Worsham (5-7, Sr.) the Lady Bulldogs backcourt will definitely pack a major punch. Mikayla Nipp (5-7, Jr.) will also primarily work on the perimeter and give the Lady Bulldogs yet another athlete on the outside. The frontcourt for the Lady Bulldogs led by forward Lynsie Cantwell (5-8, Sr.) can also make

defenses pay however. Hunter Tolliver (5-11 Jr.) will also start at forward this year and give the Lady Bulldogs some serious length inside. Outlook: It’s simple if you ask Healdton coach Mike Worsham what he expects from his team this year. “We should be better than last year,” said Worsham. Helping to make Worsham’s simple statement true is a talented frontcourt comprised of Chris Choate (6-3, Jr.) and Chaz Carr (60, Sr.). Last year Choate averaged 11.4 points and 5.1 rebounds per game while Carr averaged a more than respectable 9.8 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. Distributing the ball to the two talented forwards will be guard Cameron Webb (6-0, Sr.), Caleb Pickelsimer (5-10, Sr.) and Mark Miney (5-10, Jr.). Outlook: Look for learning curves and growing pains early in the season for the Lady Leopards as they blend a relatively new nucleus with a new head coach in Kevin Kelly, who spent the last couple of years at Ardmore. The key will be finding guards to step up in new roles after the Lady Leopards lost their entire backcourt rotation from a season ago. “There is a lot of excitement and we are installing a new philosophy to be successful,” Kelley said. “I’m excited to see what happens in real game situations.” Seniors Makayla Pierce, Meagan Steward, Taytania Gray, Hannah Wilson and Gwenisha Love will be expected to provide strong leadership during the transition period.

Outlook: In his three seasons at the helm of the Leopards, longtime coach Tony Robinson has always had some experience to work with. That’s not the case this year however as Robinson will have to start virtually from scratch in the rebuilding phase. “We have one returning starter and one senior that saw some

Taytania Gray playing time last year,” the Colbert head coach said. “Other than that I don’t have a player that stepped on the court in a varsity game. It’s definitely going to take us awhile to get used to each other and get used to the level of competition that we play against.” Seniors Garrett Work, Chance Haile and Wesley Brown will have to step in leadership as well as on-the-floor roles.
