D E C E M B E R - J A N U A RY 2 0 1 4 Bank SNB has teamed up to grant a $1,000 Scholarship to be presented in the June issue of VYPE. Here is how it will work: • Each month, VYPE will take nominations for an Athlete of the Month and a boy or girl will be elected the Bank SNB Athlete of the Month. This will be a chance for boys and girls of all sports to be recognized for their performances.

• Nominees can be mailed to Oklahoma@VYPE. com. Give the nominee’s name, school, sport and reasons you believe the athlete should be awarded the scholarship.

• The nominees will need to be seniors this season but keep in mind that their accomplishments as juniors will be taken into consideration as well.

• Each monthly recipient will be a candidate for the scholarship that will be awarded in June.

• All sports will be eligible to have a nomination.

• The male and female athletes who are chosen each month will have a pictured bio, highlighting their accomplishments, placed on this page.

Nominees will be profiled in VYPE magazine, but it is not necessary to be profiled in order to win the scholarship.

Cade Morris Chickasha High School For senior Cade Morris, it makes no difference whether the situation is within a classroom, gridiron or baseball diamond. He is comfortable in any of those settings.

On the field, Cade plays quarterback and defensive back in football, and he is a four-year starter in baseball. In both of these sports, Cade’s contributions took his teams into post-season play. In the classroom, Cade carries a 4.28 GPA, with numerous AP classes on his transcript.

Cade also finds a way to give back to his community.

This includes serving as a volunteer coach to the 8th Grade football team and giving personal testimony during events of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Because of his mother’s and grandmother’s fights with breast cancer, Cade is also active in community-level cancer awareness events.

“Everything he does is top notch,” Chickasha High School principal Beth Edwards said about Cade.

Upon graduation, Cade’s plans include enrolling at the University of Tulsa.

14 | Weatherford Basketball The Lady Eagles led by the duo of Chandler Roof and Rylie Torrey have visions of the Big House dancing in their heads. The boys team meanwhile will be looking to improve on last year’s win total while adjusting to a new head coach in Gerrett Spears.

28 | Chickasha Basketball Last season the Chickasha boys made a trip to the Class 5A state semifinals and will again be looking to make a run at a gold ball under first-year head coach Nathan Pennypacker. On the girls side of things expect highlights to come in bunches from VYPE Top 100 selection Dominique Golightly and for the Lady Chicks to improve on last years .500 finish

30 | Anadarko Basketball The Lady Warriors will be adjusting to life without All-State star and last year’s Miss Oklahoma Basketball recipient Lakota Beatty. The team still has plenty of weapons led by Lakota’s younger sister Ashley and expects to make yet another run at a gold ball.

The boys team is also a heavy favorite to compete for a spot at the Big House led by senior Mykel Shaw.

SWOK Schools Finish Fall Strong and Gear Up For Winter The Southwest region of the state came out with some hardware this fall with the Anadarko Warriors winning their second gold ball on the gridiron in the past three years. While this issue contains recaps on their path to a title don’t think that’s the only thing the VYPE team brought to the table.

Several basketball teams from across the region are ranked very highly to start the year including the Lawton Ike boys, the Anadarko boys and girls, the Weatherford girls, the Sterling girls and the Chickasha girls.

The region does boast several VYPE Top 100 girls basketball players in Chandler Roof of Weatherford, Dominique Golightly of Chickasha, Jentry Holt of Elgin, MiKayla Harrison of Elk City, Sydni Hutchinson of Minco and Andi McGill of Turner. On the boys side Jaz Gayanich of Velma-Alma, Keyshawn Perkins of Lawton Ike, Luke Lewallen of Elk City, along with Mykel Shaw of Anadarko make the list. Being chosen to the prestigious list makes all four players eligible to win either the Mr. or Miss Oklahoma Basketball award so make sure you take time to cast your vote on our online poll at www.vypeok.com.

Under coach Wiley, the Wolverines have enjoyed an uptempo style of basketball and with limited returning talent, look for some young players to get their opportunities early.

Girls Lawton took a step backward from the previous season, winning just four games a year ago. The good news is the Lady Wolverines return all five starters and with a year of experience, hopes are high for a dramatic turnaround in 2013-14.

Boys VYPE Top 100 standout Keyshawn Perkins returns for his senior season. The 6-foot-1 guard is one of five returning

starters and one of three players to average double figures last season. Perkins and junior forward Jamey Woods each averaged 12 points a game.

Perkins also recorded six steals per contest. Senior guard Dominique Pierre also returns to play alongside Perkins in the backcourt. He is coming off a junior season in which he averaged 10 points and four rebounds. Other returning starters include juniors Douglass Moore (6-6) at forward and Bentley Bross (6-3) at guard.

Both come in averaging six points a game.

Sophomore Darius Roy and seniors Robert Chapman and Kenneth Mitchell will add depth to the team.

“We will play an up-tempo style with lots of pressure defense,” head coach Bruce Harrington said. “Our shooting should be a strength. We have lots of experience returning.

This is a great group of players returning. I look forward to a fun and enjoyable year.”

Girls Veteran coach Shawn DeIorio looks to have one of his strongest squads in recent years. The Eagles return a pair of doubledigit scorers in senior Nikki Smith and junior Crystal Polk.

Smith, a 5-10 forward, averaged 12 points and nearly seven rebounds while Polk chipped in 13 points and nearly nine rebounds per game to give the Eagles a strong frontcourt. The duo is fielding several Division I offers, DeIorio said. The backcourt looks talented as well with senior guards Kennedi Simien, Jordan Roy and junior Sydney Ellis. “We have a very physical post game and better outside shooting,” DeIorio said.

“We will have to shoot the ball better from the outside to open up the inside game. Our goal is to win the state championship.

We will mix up our defenses this year – zone, matchup zone, man defense. We want our defense to create a lot of offense for us.”

Lawton MAC Highlanders Boys Trace Cook returns for his fourth season and looks to lead the Highlanders back to the state tournament in 2013-14. The 5-foot-8 guard is coming off a junior season in which he averaged 15.5 points per game. Senior center Barry Williams is also back after scoring 7.0 points. Williams brings great size to the frontcourt at 6-foot-5. The Highlanders have a trio of move-ins in Jariun Nolan (Hale), Aaron Allen (Lawton) and Isiah Ervin (Duncan), each of whom should help bolster the team. Not to be overlooked are seniors Trent Meiseh and David Burns.

“We felt like we were right there to win a state championship last season,” Harrington said. “We

need to get our roles for the team situated and peak at the right time.

Trace Cook could be something special. We will compete at a high level and play defense on every possession.”

Lawton Mac fell just shy of the 5A state tournament, losing to Carl Albert in the Area Consolation finals. Seniors Paj Jackson, Kiaji Sawyer and Khalia Austin. The trio averaged 9.2, 7.2 and 6.5 points respectively. There’s talent off the bench as well with junior Briana Anderson, Yoshika Thomas and Sydnee Stolz.

“I look for leadership with our three returning starters,” Garza said. “We are hungry to get back to the state tournament after being so close last year.”

with no returning starters, but his level of excitement is high for the upcoming season. “This is going to be a fun year. We have a lot of great kids ready to prove people wrong and make a deep run this year,” coach Ange said.

Senior guard Dustin Tullous (5-9) and junior guard Malik Goosby (5-8) are two dependable guards with quickness and athleticism.

Guard play is crucial for the overall success of the offense, but defensively the Bulldogs will look to Dylan Jensen (5-10, Sr.) and Jace Landmark (6-0, Jr.).

Jensen and Landmark must bring a relentless attack on the boards and give the guards opportunities for fast break points.

Another player expected to have an impact at both ends of the court is Zeke Henson (5-7). The senior guard is a spot-up shooter with excellent range. Look for coach Ange to use several players off the bench this season. “We will be able to play a lot of kids (ten or more), which should allow us to pressure people and keep fresh legs on the floor,” coach Ange said.

Despite the lack of starters on the team, there is no lack of experience. The Bulldogs are a hard working group, energetic and eager to learn. That energy and work ethic could carry the Bulldogs deep into the playoffs this year.

At the small forward spot senior Murphy Douglass (5-11) will be counted on to make plays for the Panthers both on the perimeter and at the rim. Sophomore Kaden Kennedy (6-1) will team with junior Brandon Townsend (6-0) to do the dirty work on the inside cleaning the glass and softening up defenses so the Panthers guards can make plays on the outside.

Eagles Boys After spending the past seven years coaching on the collegiate level Gerrett Spears comes to Weatherford to lead the Eagles this season. Spears will institute a man-to-man defense and an offense that centers around a dynamic two-man game. Senior point guard CJ Davis (6-2) and junior center Cooper Morlan (6-3) will spearhead that attack with a strong inside-outside presence. Sophomore Wade Haugen (6-1) will spend the majority of his time at the small forward position but will also

move over to play the power forward spot at times too. Boys Coming off a 14-12 season last year the Elk City Elks bring back three starters and are setting some lofty goals this season. One of the team’s three returning starters is senior guard and VYPE Top 100 selection Luke Lewallen (6-5). In 2012-2013 Lewallen averaged 18.7 points per

game and shot 80 percent from

the free-throw line making 114 out of 142 attempts from the charity stripe. Senior Kyler Butler (5-10) will also be a major contributor in the backcourt after leading the team in assists last season. Junior Camron Rogers (5-9) and sophomore Shayne Thornton (6-4) will round out a deep and talented set of guards.

On the inside the Elks will turn to Destry Kelley (6-5) to compliment the team’s play on the perimeter.

Last season Kelley averaged 7.3 points and 6.1 rebounds per game.

“This should be a competitive year for this group. We should be a good defensive team,” coach Bliss said.

“We have a good mixture of experience and youth and a roster of girls that enjoy playing with each other. It should be an exciting year, if our young players gel with our upperclassmen it will be a very fun year,” head coach Tim Elison said.

Baseball and Football Weatherford Eagles senior Garrett Gaunt is the Weatherford Academic Athlete of the Month. A twosport star for the Eagles Gaunt plays quarterback and defensive back for the football team and in the Spring hits the diamond as a part of the Weatherford baseball team. Gauntâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s performance in the classroom is equally outstanding however.

Gaunt carries a 4.0 grade point average and takes AP classes in English, Chemistry and Psychology. The senior is also a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

After high school Gaunt hopes to continue his athletic career most likely on the baseball field and is already being recruited by several schools around the state.

With no returning starters this year Beck will be running off what is fairly close to a blank slate. Despite the fact Beck will have no returning starters to work with he does

Clinton Battles Through Injury-Plagued Season Red Tornadoes Finish Season With 8-4 Overall Record

The Clinton Red Tornadoes football team came into the year with high hopes of repeating as Class 4A state champions.

Unfortunately the injury bug bit the team hard this year with many key players missing significant time throughout the year. While Clinton failed to claim another gold ball the team still showed a great deal ud to of resolve finishing 8-4 overall, including a 5-1 record at home.

Clinton also had significant wins this year over Heritage Hall and Harrah at home along with big road wins at Elgin, Elk City and Woodward.

The team was led by VYPE Top 100 running back Marquiz Simpkins with 1,399 yards and 14 touchdowns on 128 carries.

Also running for 847 yards and eight touchdowns this season was Jevin Jefferson. In the passing attack quarterback Mitchell McAtee completed 34 passes this season for 476 yards and six touchdowns. McAteeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s favorite target this year was sophomore Frashon Ford who caught 11 passes for 188 yards and two touchdowns.

On the defensive side of the ball seniors Ryan Richert and Donivion Brown led the way with 54 and 52 tackles respectively. Fellow senior Grant Lee compiled 31 tackles this season while freshman Daniel Lopez had 47 stops to go along with two interceptions.

McGill is a creative passer and scorer at the point guard spot who averaged 12 points per game last season while setting the table for the rest of the team. Chickasha Fightin’ Chicks

Boys A stunning 52-50 victory over Southeast in the first round of the 5A state tournament is something coach Nathan Pennypacker hopes to build on this year. The first-year Chicks coach will have to do so without a single returning starter. That’s not to say there isn’t talent. The Chicks have a trio of seniors to call upon for leadership in T.J. Filer, Montana Stonecalf and Oron Bowman.

If Chickasha can find replacement scoring for graduated players E.J. Golightly and Joey Sylvester, who averaged 22.9 and 15.9 points respectively.

When asked what fans should expect from Chickasha, Pennypacker said, “Effort and intensity.”

Girls Chickasha needs to look no further than VYPE Top 100 standout Dominique Golightly as it’s go-to person in the team’s bid to build on the momentum of last season. The 5-foot-9 Golightly, just a sophomore, is already on the radar of area colleges. As a freshman, she averaged 13.1 points and 7.5 rebounds from her guard spot.

Stewart and Golightly will cause headaches for opposing teams, as each are capable of hitting from the perimeter. Stewart led the team in 3-point percentage (21.3) followed by Golightly (18.2) Taylor Sylvester (5.5) is the Chicks’ third returning starter.

The sophomore scored 5.4 points and 5.6 rebounds last year.

Players to watch include senior forward Maddy Irving (1.3), junior guard Jackie Ramos and sophomore Hanna Ferguson.

“We are hoping to push the ball in transition and play solid defense,” Edelon said. “We are looking forward to our team rising up as the season progresses and operating as a unit. We are excited about our team and hoping to build off our 2013 playoff run.”

Parker also was named the MVP of the Class 4A state tournament in 2012 when she helped her team claim a gold ball all with a broken finger.

Still early in her collegiate career it is already clear to see that Parker could have a massive impact in not one but two sports.

Anadarko leaves no doubt in Class 4A

If there were questions surrounding the Class 4A state title game, Anadarko more than answered them with a, 40-0 shut out of Poteau.

Mykel Shaw and the Warriors would see every bounce go their way against the No.6 ranked Poteau Pirates. Shaw returned an interception for a touchdown, recovered a fumble and caught a 32-yard pass from Brandon Pollard to help the Warriors complete the perfect 14-0 season.

The first quarter was all Anadarko. After a 99-yard drive the Warriors running back R.J. Sink punched one in from two yards out. After the kickoff the first play from scrimmage for the Pirates was picked off by Shaw and returned 31-yards for the team’s second score. In the second quarter Shaw would continue his MVP performance catching a 32-yard pass from Pollard for another Warrior touchdown. Pollard would add six more on a four-yard run, but the PAT was no good. At the half Anadarko was in control and leading Poteau, 34-0.

VYPE Top 100 finalist Sink would add another score in the third quarter with a 29-yard reception from Pollard. Poteau quarterback Jace Pitchford was injured early and missed most of the game.

Roger Barcheers led the Poteau Pirates in rushing with 19 carries for 38 yards. Sink finished with 65 yards on 18 carries for Anadarko and Josh Parton recorded two receptions for 44 yards.

Head coach Kent Jackson said, “The first quarter really set the tone for the game. I couldn’t be more proud of my guys. We’re really lucky that we get to do this and to coach kids like we have in Anadarko.”

Ben Scott is in his first year as the head boys’ basketball coach for the 5A Duncan Demons, after serving as an assistant coach for last year’s squad.

At age 31, Scott has nine years on his coaching resume, with positions as the head girls’ coach at Holdenville as well as Marietta and Edmond Memorial. Currently, with his assistant coach Brian Keith, Scott works with the Demons to improve on last year’s 5-19 record. When VYPE caught up with Scott, his team just came off a tough five-point loss to Ardmore in their season opener.

VYPE: How do you feel about your team going into this season?

Scott: I’m very excited. We have large numbers up from last year.

A bunch of kids came out that didn’t play last year or haven’t played in a couple of years. We didn’t return a lot of guys that played for last year’s team. We have 21 high school kids— sophomores too. Last year, we had to suit up freshmen just to have 15 on the bench. It’s a

good problem to have—kids excited and coming out.

VYPE: Who are your standout players?

Scott: Dalton Dismuke scored 20 last night [against Ardmore].

Ben Petersen scored 19.

VYPE: How deep is your bench?

Scott: We played 11 last night.

We were with Ardmore every single minute of the game except for the first two, when

they jumped out 14-4 on us.

There’s a freshman, Trenton Bell, who made varsity minutes.

He’s as big as a couple of starters we have. I’m really excited. We have some really smart kids. In the off-season, I put them through hell. I kept gaining [players]. There would be a hard week, and the next week, I’d have another kid jump in off-season basketball.

Those kids fight every day.

They’re fighting for spots.

There’s competition. It’s helped us handle that pressure. I have one kid, Nathan Clark. He’s the only returnable player that has experience at all. He was a freshman last year. All of the other 10 guys I put on the floor have zero varsity experience.

VYPE: With this being your first season as head coach at Duncan, what has been your experience so far?

Scott: Every day, they’re ready to compete. The experience has

been great. We’ve practiced literally every Saturday since football season has been out.

Out of those 11 guys that I played, probably seven or eight of them have been football guys.

Not only is it a new program, but it’s in its infancy stage.

There was no off-season with those football guys. It’s literally been three weeks of trying to figure this thing out.

VYPE: What challenges do you anticipate for the rest of the season?

Scott: We play Ardmore homeand-home. Lawton Mac. The same thing with El Reno. We have Chickasha at home this year, who were in the state semi-finals. [Chickasha] did lose their best player to graduation last year. It’s one of those things—it’s a different style of play. It’s experienced ball clubs that, year in and year out, are up there in the state tournament.

It definitely has its challenges.

The thing that we can’t change is that we’re not all of a sudden going to be better athletes by the end of the season. That is not the case. We’re not going to turn around and all of a sudden be super-quick. The difference is learning to be able to handle pressure.

VYPE: How would you describe your coaching philosophy?

Scott: I want to put us in whatever position we can to win. If that means play man, we’ll play man. If that means play zone, we’ll play zone or run motion. Whatever I can do to set them up to where they can use whatever ability we have, that’s it. Last night, we ran half-court man. Half the time, it was 2-3 zone. We kept switching it up every play, making [Ardmore] have to adjust, trying to throw a little kink in it. We have to be fundamental. That’s my goal this whole year is being competitive and fundamental as we can.

VVPE: What message would you have for next season’s incoming freshmen?

Scott: Work ethic. One thing they could take home would be work ethic. A good work ethic never stops. There’s always someone out to competing for your spot. There’s always someone, somewhere else, outworking you.

Our guys do everything. If we have work ethic in basketball, we’ll have it in baseball. We’ll have it in football. They’re good things.

To begin, Holly is a mother of four children—Connor, Hunter, Kenadi and Kooper. Two of them—quarterback Connor and linebacker Hunter—play football on Friday nights for the Duncan Demons.

When football season winds down, Holly is in the stands at wrestling tournaments, supporting both the students and her husband, wrestling Coach Kevin Kelly. Holly also shows her support through being active in the Quarterback Club, 12th Man, Project Graduation and the Duncan Wrestling Boosters Club.

Yet, Holly’s support of athletics and her children is not the only reason why she is the Duncan Mom of the Month. As a pre-K teacher at Irving Elementary, she is a nominee for 2013-2014 Duncan Teacher of the Year. Her educational background includes graduating from Tecumseh High School and East Central University. When not in the classroom or helping Duncan athletics find success, she can be found working the children’s desk on Sunday mornings at the Ray of Hope Church.

Boys First-year head coach Ben Scott put the Demons through grueling off-season workouts that he hopes will catapult Duncan back to the state tournament. The Demons started the 2012-13 season strong at 5-1 before losing their final 18 games. That’s something Scott hopes to avoid this season. A veteran coach, Scott returns to Duncan where he was an assistant after two years at Edmond Memorial,. He also coached girls basketball at

Girls Duncan took a step backward last season, winning just four games after reaching the Class 5A state tournament the year before. Grant Givens, in his first year as head coach at Duncan, believes there is talent to get back to state. Seniors Rainy Sanford and Tania Elix will be asked to provide leadership to a young squad. Other members of the squad expected to

contribute include sophomores Paityn Bower, Delany Mitchell and freshman Chandler Hunt.

“We will run a tough half-court defense,” Givens said. “We also will have a fast transition from offense to defense. We have a young team but we will be tough. We are looking to get back to winning ways.”

Anthony Willis, a 6-foot-2 junior guard, is the top returning scorer at 11.6 points. Tariq Woods, a 6-foot-3 senior forward, anchors the frontcourt play alongside Chantz White, a 6-foot-2 junior who scored nearly five points a game a year ago. Other players to watch in the backcourt include junior Keyshawn Brown and sophomore O.J. Walker.

The Lady Tigers saw dramatic improvement a year ago in coach Kevin Kelly’s first season, winning 11 games compared to just one the

previous year. Now with the team fully invested in his system, Ardmore fans can expect even bigger things this season. The Lady Tigers return three starters, led by junior guard Tee Taylor, who averaged 12 points, two steals and two assists per game.

She will be joined in the backcourt by sophomore Kyla Stapleton (3.0 ppg) and junior Christin Russell. Freshman Christa Pickens has looked impressive in the preseason and should also be in the rotation. Junior forward Faithlyn Piggee is the only returning player with experience in the frontcourt.

“We are looking to continue our improvement, get over .500 and be an Area playoff team,” Kelly said. “Our motto is play hard, play smart, play together.”

Indians Boys A deep run in the football playoffs has kept the Indians off the hardwood for longer than most Class 4A teams. That slow start won’t slow down Jeremy Stewart’s veteran team for too long though as they try to improve on last season’s 21-6 overall record.

Senior point guard Talor Stewart (5-10) and junior guard Kelton Kelch (5-10) headline a group of talented scorers for the Indians and will both play major roles this year. Senior Nick Ramsey (5-10) will round out the Plainview starting backcourt, giving even more senior leadership to the team. On the interior senior forwards Dalton Dillon (6-2) and Zane Manley (6-2) will lead the way.

Point guard Nicole Means, who totaled 14 points and 5 assists per game as a freshman joins 5-foot-11 Mckensie Laughlin, who averaged double-double (10.3ppg/10.2reb) numbers as a freshman to provide the go-to-prowess.

BOYS Trevor Guy (2nd year) 12-13 Record: 15-13 Outlook: The Tigers enter this season with three returning starters and roster loaded with game time experience and athleticism. Sharp shooting guard Sawyer Toole, who scorched the nets for 23.4 points per contest last year returns along with point guard Blake Ramirez (12.1ppg) and Ty Rope Smith (6.3ppg/6.0reb). Adding to the talents of the Tigers roster will be Jake Cowan, who missed the final half of last year due to injury along with part time starter Hunter Laughlin. Jordan Payne, a baseball standout, joins this year’s

lineup as part of 8-10 player rotation.

Newcomer Taylor Cherry, Kieon Callins and Xavy Pineda boost the up-tempo style play.

“Experience in game conditions is a big plus for us,” said head coach Trevor Guy. “These guys can all shoot the ball and combined with our speed and quickness, this is going to be a fun year.”

GIRLS Sam Hale (9th year) 12-13 Record: 18-9 Outlook: With a roster full of players who gained experience in smaller roles last season this may be somewhat of a rebuilding year for the Lady Blue Devils.

Sophomore forwards Hannah High (6-1) and Bailee Frazier (6-0) are the team’s two biggest threats both on offense and defense. Both High and Frazier are also solid rebounders and averaged 5.1 and 4.3 boards a game last year. Junior guards Daci Meyer (5-7) and Chelsea Thompson (5-5) will anchor the Lady Blue Devils’ backcourt. Meanwhile sophomore Kyla Hunt (5-7) will start at the small forward spot as a versatile player who can play both inside and out depending on her matchup.

BOYS Eric Norton (8th year) 12-13 Record: 18-8 Outlook: “We are a great team with high expectations. This is the longest team I’ve had here at Walters and we play really hard on defense,” head coach Eric Norton said about his team this year.

That length starts on the perimeter where Trevor Hartman (6-3) will run the show after averaging 13.5 points a game last year. Juniors Bryce Willis (6-0) and Sheldon Downes (6-0) are both listed as forwards but will likely see some time in the backcourt as well. Doing the bulk of the damage in the paint will be junior center Tripp West (6-3) and sophomore forward Dwayne Ototivo (6-4).

Coach Mowry is excited for the season, but cautious with a young team. “We have a lot of unknowns this season.

We are a young team with a new coach and a new system that graduated 30-plus points per game.

However, these girls are good athletes with great attitudes, so it could be a great year,” coach Mowry said. Kaytlyn Kizarr (5-2, So) and Corrie Moore (5-5, So.) are two of those young players coach Mowry is expected to mature and contribute this season. Tory Nations (5-9, Jr.) averaged 4.0 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game last year. Her numbers should increase. Shayna Throckmorton (5-9, Jr.) will play the post with Diamond Morris (5-6, Jr.) is expected to get the start at forward.

Morris averaged 5.0 points and 2.0 assists last year.

Look for an up tempo style of play with a defensive minded approach.

It figures to be the outside shooting strength of junior guard Jacy Cullers (17.2ppg) and senior sharp shooter Kaylin Rennaker (16.1ppg) that will pace Rush Springs to another successful year. Also back for the Lady Redskins is guard Kaylee Large (6.1ppg). Depth should also help as senior Samantha Dennis and freshman Jordan Brooks are expected to be major contributors for the Lady Redskins.

“We look for another good year,” said Parrish, now in his 31st year of coaching. “Besides Large, Cullers, and Rennaker returning, we’ll have help from a bench that got a lot of experience last year and a good freshman class.”

BOYS Kirk Harris (28th year) 12-13 Record: 14-12 Outlook: “We have four returning starters and several other returning players. We are not very big and must use our overall quickness to offset our lack of size,” said coach Harris. Guard Zac Beasler (6-0, Jr.) averaged 10 points a game while fellow guard Wes Coast (5-11, Sr.) averaged 11 points per contest. The pair create matchup problems for opponents looking to shut down outside shooters.

Braden O’Dell (5-11, So.) is another scorer the Outlaws are excited to have on the floor. Trey Coffman (6-1, Sr.) is playing this season with Nathan Crowson (5-11, Jr.) who averaged a little over six points a game last year. Look for the Outlaws to push the ball offensively and use their quickness on defense to create scoring opportunities.

BOYS Mike Zurline (1st year) 12-13 record 3-19 Outlook: The Redskins will rely on a pair of returning starters and a lot of youth to revive the boys program. Mike Zurline, who’s had success coaching girls’ basketball, will coach a boys team for the first time in 30 years, as he takes the helm for Rush Springs. On the floor, senior guard Cap Snow takes over as team leader and is joined by Aaron Morrow who started for the Redskins last year as a freshman. The heart of the team will be young, including nine freshmen or sophomores, and will need to grow up fast in order for Rush Springs to thrive.
