Elgin Football Coach Cunningham Q&A Head coach Jason Cunningham and the Elgin Owls look to turn the corner on the season as the big win over rival Cache came at the right time. We caught up with coach Cunningham as the team prepared for a road game against Newcastle. VYPE: Every year there seems to be someone who steps up and gives the team a spark. What player has been a nice surprise for you this season?
Cunningham: We have really been impressed with senior TE/DE Zach Garrett. He is a leader on and off the field. He has 24 Tackles, two sacks and three tackles for loss. He also has been grading 80% on offense. He has matured into a really good football player. VYPE: You picked up a nice win over Marlow early in the season, then a big district win over rival Cache. What do you expect with your remaining three district games? Cunningham: We thought we had a
pretty good football team but were plagued by penalties, turnovers and trust issues. The win over Cache was a total team effort and the kids came together for the first time. I foresee for our kids to play with the same intensity for the remainder of the season. We have had the best week of practice of the year preparing for Newcastle and expect a great effort. VYPE: What has the community support for the football program been like this season? Cunningham: Our community has embraced and supported this team in every way. The school and students are behind this group of kids in a way I haven’t seen in a while. VYPE: After watching film from the early games, what have you learned about your football team?
Cunningham: Our team is a physical, tough group of kids that have come together for one common goal and not
one player cares who gets the credit. We have become a team that will play hard and tough and overcome adversity in any circumstance. VYPE: Thanks coach and good luck with the rest of the season. Hopefully we get to do this again soon. Cunningham: Thank you. ELGIN SCHEDULE

Binger-Oney Bobcats Ledgend Smith and Cody Milligan are Norman and Stillwater bound, but before bedlam takes over they are leading Binger to another possible title. VYPE Editor Brad Heath caught up with the pair as they prepared for the post season play.
Cody Milligan
VYPE: Do you guys pay attention to the rankings? Right now you’re at No.3. Milligan: No rankings don’t really mean anything to me simply because baseball is a game of breaks. The highest ranked team can be beat by the lowest ranked team on any given day. Smith: No, I don’t really pay attention to them. We look every know and then but it all starts over when playoffs start.
VYPE: Your three loses came to ranked opponents. Does that make it easier to take or are you so competitive that it drives you nuts? Smith: I personally do not care about our losses. As long as we compete and play hard then they deserve to win.
Milligan: Whether or not we lose to a great team or an average team, losing is losing. It’s never an easy one to take in even if I know my team and I did all we could to win. VYPE: Ledgend, why OU? Cody, why OSU?
Smith: I chose OU because they were the first to offer and it was always a big deal to be an OU fan. I’ve always wanted to grow up and play baseball at the next level and when I got offered and it was just a great moment in my life. Milligan: OSU has been a place I’ve wanted to go to since freshman. Being around coach Holliday, his staff and some of the recent players has really helped me make my decision. Every time I’m there I feel like it’s a place where I’m welcomed by each coach and player.
VYPE: What will it be like for you guys to look across the diamond for bedlam and see your former teammate in the other guys dugout? Milligan: I’m actually excited to be able to look across the field and see Ledgend in the other dugout. Ever since I moved to Binger I’ve wanted to hit off him and in the three years I’ve been here, he’s the only one I’ve never gotten to hit off of.
Smith: I think it’ll be awesome to be able to play against my teammate and one of my really good friends.

Altus Cheer Makes State
The Altus varsity cheer squad competed at the state competition held at Gallagher-Iba Area on the campus of Oklahoma State University.
Just making it to the competition is an accomplishment of its own, but for Altus just making it wasn’t enough. They wanted to place if not win, but many people who attend the competition felt the Class 5A division was the most competitive all them all. “I was very pleased with their performance. We set a goal in April to place
top 10 and they not only met but exceeded my expectations. I’m most proud of how far the girls have come this year. This is a rebuilding year and as a coach I couldn’t be more proud,” coach Kacie Walker said.
It was certainly a learning experience. With so many talented teams competing in Class 5A, finishing in the top ten (7th) will certainly bring some added confidence to the squad.
confidence in themselves. It has been a tough five years for Altus cheer. Our program had started to fall. We are on our way back up and the girls have a new love for the sport! As for next year, they are working on new skills in tumbling and stunting,” said coach Walker. “As of now we are focusing on finishing cheering on our football, basketball and wrestling teams. We are keeping our focus on next year’s routine and building skills.”
“The trip to state this year I think more than anything built the girls

Character is a combination of qualities that distinguishes one person or group from another. VYPE celebrates achievements of local high school athletes by presenting the monthly “Character Counts Award.” In only her freshman year Brooke Hill has already left an impression on the coaches, faculty and students at Altus High School. Hill is a member of the varsity fastpitch softball team and has worked hard to help the team get back to being a top program in Class 5A. Despite being one of the youngest players on the team Hill continues to show sportsmanship and character in the dugout, on the field and in the classroom.

“Good sportsmanship is the number one thing to have. It is critical in a game. Without it the game is nothing. Good sportsmanship is the key to the game. After one mistake it’s hard to come back. It can change the tone of the game,” Hill said. “Character comes in when you step off the bus, or as soon as you show up to play. Warm-ups are the best time to get your character in check. Warming up before the game is the best time to get your head cleared. Character means showing a positive attitude when playing a game. It means staying engaged when something goes
wrong. Only making the plays you are capable of making.” For Hill, her teammates are more like family and they’re always ready to pick each other up.
“My teammates are like my sisters. We grow a bond throughout the season. By the time the season is about to end we all feel closer. Teammates can take you far in a game. They can pick you back up,” Hill said. At Altus High School Hill belongs to Leo’s Club and said when she graduates in a few years she would like to attend college on a softball scholarship and major in Kinesiology or Physiology. But for now she’s focused on making the most of her opportunities at Altus High School.
“I love when we get to travel. We get to play on different fields and discover something new. We get a feel of what it’s like to play somewhere different.”
Boone-Apache News and Notes WARRIOR FOOTBALL Head coach Larry McDaniel and the Warriors are off to a great start. We caught up with coach to get his thoughts on the season thus far.
VYPE: Coach, halfway through the regular season has there been any surprises this season or a player or two that’s really stepped up? McDaniel: When we started this season we felt like this group of kids had an opportunity to be a pretty good team. My biggest question was going to be our sophomore quarterback Landon McCracken and how he progressed in the pre district games, which we felt was a pretty difficult schedule. I couldn’t be more pleased with his progress and consequently our results offensively.
VYPE: The defense has played well this season, what’s been the focus there and did you guys change anything up from last season? McDaniel: We put a lot of emphasis on our defense at Apache. Our kids and coaches take a lot of pride in being a hard-nosed physical team. Our defense gets as much or more practice time than any other phase of the game. We run the same scheme but the kids are a year older and with a
few position changes, I felt like it’s really helped getting kids in the best position that fits their talent.
FASTPITCH SOFTBALL
McDaniel: I feel this team has the ability to make a deep playoff run this year. We have been faced with two major injuries this season with a broken leg and a torn acl/mcl/meniscus with our offensive and defensive line. We had a concussion that’s affected our defensive backs. We’ve been fortunate to have some quality depth but we really need to avoid the injury bug the remainder of the season. It’s a tribute to our upper class man to rally together and help bring along the lesser, experienced players. So far we have been pleased with their progress.
The season started with the Warriors winning five of their first eight games including the season opener against Binger-Oney.
VYPE: What’s the key for you guys moving forward?
vs. Hinton 38 - 7Win @ Hobart 14 - 6Win

Rush Springs 48 - 28Win Velma-Alma 38 - 6Win 10/20 @ Empire 10/28 Healdton
11/4 @ Elmore City-Pernell
Head coach Bill Burcham led the Lady Warriors to a 20-win season and a trip to the Class 2A regional tournament.
Then it was off the Chattanooga for their first tournament, which featured Indiahoma, Cyril, Chattanooga and Big Pasture. The Warriors won three of their four games, only dropping the final game to No.1 Cyril. During the district tournament at Rush Springs the Lady Warriors stepped up their game and won two in a row, 6-1, 4-1 and followed that up with a regional tournament win over Healdton, 7-2. But their state tournament hopes were dashed by No.7 Mangum with a, 6-10 loss. Overall it was a successful season for the Warriors as younger players gained experience playing in highpressure games. Look for BooneApache to return this spring ready to take on a competitive slowpitch schedule. OCTOBER 2016

You Gotta Fite For Your Right... Merritt Football Senior Dawson Fite and junior Seth Fite are cousins and two players Merritt football fans have grown to love. They sat down with VYPE editor Brad Heath for a quick Q&A about sports, family and their competitive nature. VYPE: Did you two grow up playing sports together?
Seth: Yes, we have grown up playing sports together. We play football the most, and we also do powerlifting together.
Dawson: We’ve played sports together for years. We’ve played baseball, basketball, football and powerlifting. VYPE: How competitive are you two when competing against each other?
Dawson: We have a great sense of competitiveness (it comes with the last name;) but we are more supportive for each other.
Seth: We are very competitive with each other. If he does something good, I usually have to try to do it even better. We push each other to do the best we can. VYPE: What would I find you guys doing away from sports? Seth: When we aren’t playing football or powerlifting, you can usually find us hanging out together with our family and friends, or playing PlayStation online against each other.
Dawson: When we’re not on the field or weight room, we’re usually hanging out
with friends & family.
VYPE: Tell us one thing about your cousin we should know? Dawson: Seth and I are exactly 11 months apart, so we’ve grown up together. We’re like brothers. He’s one of the funniest guys I know. He is loyal and will always be the first guy to have my back. Seth: The one thing you need to know about Dawson is he is a great guy. He loves playing football and makes everyone around him better. He’s not just my cousin but more like a brother and best friend all in one.

The team is determined, we work hard to accomplish goals and I have no doubt that the program will reach those goals in the future. My team has heart, we fight for everything and put it all on the field.
VYPE: Who always leaves the field with the dirtiest uniform?
Maddox: Probably our catcher Andrea LeGrand.
Bales: Diverse, driven, crazy.
VYPE: Which teammates will keep everyone laughing on the bus and in the dugout?
VYPE: Give me three words to describe the team?
Maddox: Three words to describe our team; Powerful, Gritty, and Smart.
VYPE: What have you loved most about this season? Metcalf: What I’ve loved most about this season, this one being the last, is spending time and making final memories with my team. Maddox: Building stronger friendships and overcoming the challenges of adjusting to a new coach.
Bales: I’ve personally loved seeing some of my
VYPE: What position(s) do you play? Metcalf: I play right field. Maddox: First base. Bales: Pitcher.
Metcalf: I would say Sidney, Robyn, or Harleyjust because she probably forgot to wash it though.
Bales: Mattie Maddox always has the dirtiest uniform in my opinion because she plays with all her heart, every game. Metcalf: Coach Murray and Harley definitely keep us all entertained. Maddox: Harley Smith by far. Bales: Harley Smith.
VYPE: What goes through your head when you’re at the plate? Metcalf: When I’m at the plate I try to focus on
the ball and just simply putting it in play and getting to first as fast as I can.
Maddox: Trying to anticipate the next pitch as well as trying to stay calm and focused.
Bales: What is my situation and what do I need to do to help my team the most. VYPE: Favorite memory of your softball career?
Metcalf: My favorite softball memory is getting to make new friendships every year, diving for balls in the outfield, and accomplishing goals with my team. Maddox: Beating Woodward back to back on our home field in the district games.
Bales: My favorite memory is when we were sitting at Woodward on the bus getting ready to play and coach Smith brought out a full length mirror and we all thought he was crazy. He gave us a speech starting off asking us what we saw. He went on to say what he thought we should be seeing and that was a hard-working, talented, and humble team. We came to realize that everything he said was true, we had no clue what we were really capable of until after he told us that we could be whatever we wanted to be and that we just had to believe in ourselves and each other.

Weatherford Cheer The Weatherford cheer squad began competing only four years ago, but they have made incredible strides towards becoming a contender in that short amount of time.
Head coach Donna Miller knew the challenges of competitive cheer and what it took to make it to the state competition. Going into this season she was confident the squad had the athletes and the routine too not only make it, but to be very competitive with some of the best cheer squads in the state regardless of class.
“I felt like they performed better than they scored but top ten is great. I was most proud of how they went through warm ups! Feeling positive and confident, encouraging each

other,” Miller said.
Tuttle beat Heritage Hall to take top honors followed by Community Christian and Blanchard. Class 4A featured some great routines and near flawless performances. For Weatherford the state competition was another learning experience and one they will certainly grow from.
“We just started competing four years ago, so our goal is to place better that the year before. I am proud that we have made it to state each year, placing 12th the first year, 10th, and then 6th! They are already talking about what it is going to take to make it to top four next year,” Miller said. “Elva
Escobedo is my captain as well as the other seniors being the co-captains, Parris Fite, Sydney Buckner, Alexis Lee, Kenlee Smith, and Sierra Duncan.” The fun does not end because state is over. Weatherford will participate in the STUNT games this spring.
“We continue to work on tumbling and focus on the rest of our football, basketball and wrestling seasons. We will plan on participating in the STUNT games this spring and then with competition in April,” said Miller. “I have a great group of girls, awesome parents supporting us and a great co-coach Allison Propps who makes it fun!”
Weatherford Academic Athlete of the Month Weatherford High School senior and varsity volleyball player Gina Delgado is the Weatherford Academic Athlete of the Month.
Delgado not only plays volleyball, but in the spring she will take her talents to the diamond and play slowpitch softball. “I love softball because I enjoy the feeling of catching a line drive or pop fly. I enjoy getting a good hit between first base and second. Softball is a sport where I met one of my closest friends,” Delgado said. Making the most of her educational opportunities is important to Delgado.
“Education is a very big thing in my life. My parents didn’t get to graduate high school or go to college, my mother got pregnant at a very young age with my older sister and my dad had to work in order to support for our family,” said
Delgado. “After graduating high school, my plan is to attend Southwestern Oklahoma State University.” Delgado is active in the Weatherford High School FFA program and said her favorite class is a math.
“One of my favorite classes is probably Algebra 3, I may not actually be the best at math but I like when I do something right and it makes me feel good.” Being a student at Weatherford High School is something Delgado will not soon forget. From her teammates to the other students in the school, Delgado is thankful she’s had an opportunity to share the experience with them all. “My teammates mean a lot to me. I’ve
Gina Delgado grown up playing sports and going to school with them and getting to know each and every one of them. They’re very special to me. Being able to attend and compete at Weatherford High School, I’ve gotten to make many friends through sports and through school and those friends I’ve made, I know I’ve made for a lifetime. I’ve definitely enjoyed my years here.”

Spotlight on Clinton Football's Zachary Acosta As the season hits the halfway mark we wanted to catch up with Zachary Acosta, a starter on the offensive line for the Red Tornadoes, and find out how the team has handled the coaching transition and can the Red Tornadoes make a playoff run. Here’s what Zach told VYPE in a no-holdsbarred interview.
VYPE: Zach, tell us what this season has been like for the players? Acosta: This season has been very exciting on the field as well as in the locker room. VYPE: Have you ever played on a team that scored 77 points in one game? What was that game like against Elk City?
Acosta: I have never been on a team that has scored 77 points. The closest score to that was during my freshman year when we beat Southeast, 61-16. VYPE: You guys lost to Altus in the first game of the season and later to Heritage Hall. Are those games you feel if played later in the sea24

son Clinton would perform better and possibly win? Acosta: I do feel that later in the season we will perform better against teams like Altus and Heritage Hall. VYPE: Name a few teammates that have really stepped up this season or is it more about the team playing well together?
Acosta: Clinton football is not about one person stepping up on each side of the ball. It is about the entire team stepping up and playing together. VYPE: How tough was it on the team to go through a coaching change after the season had started? Acosta: The coaching change was not a drastic transition therefore we were not in turmoil for long. We did meet and agreed that we will continue to play as a team and stick together through thick and thin.
VYPE: Ultimately football is still X’s and O’s and player execution. How much fun are you guys having right now?
Acosta: We as a team are enjoying the season so far and are having much fun on the field with each other. We are not overwhelmed by our responsibilities to the team.
VYPE: Who keeps everyone loose in the locker room? Acosta: We keep each other loose and entertained in the locker room. We enjoy each other’s presence and are a close group of friends. VYPE: What should we look for from Clinton now that we’re past the halfway mark of the regular season?
Acosta: Clinton will be playing as hard as we can, playing for each other, and making a playoff run. We plan on keeping the tradition alive.
Character is a combination of qualities that distinguishes one person or group from another. VYPE celebrates achievements of local high school athletes by presenting the monthly “Character Counts Award.” Senior Bo Felch is a varsity football and baseball player at Clinton High School and is recognized as this month’s Clinton Character Counts award winner.
As an athlete at Clinton High School Felch understands what it means to put the team first and always display good sportsmanship. It’s been taught to him since a young age. Being a person of good character comes easy for Flech in the good times and the bad. “Having good character means having good sportsmanship and not quitting when things aren’t going our way,” Felch said.
Bo Felch Clinton High School
On the field in the heat of the battle it’s easy to forget, but Felch stays focused on representing Clinton High School, his coaches and teammates with the upmost class and character.
“We show it on the field all the time. How you carry yourself, whether you’re winning or losing. That’s how you show character,” said Felch. “Sportsmanship and character

are aspects of life we learn in high school sports. It’s part of having good character.”
Whether it’s football or baseball, Felch considers his teammates family. That closeness brings the team together and drives Felch and his teammates to work hard for each other.
Off the field Felch is involved in STUCO and the National Honor Society. His classroom work remains the most important thing in his high school career. “After I graduate I will either go to SWOSU and major in business or go to OBU and major in student ministry,” Felch said.
But before he leaves Clinton for the college Felch and the Red Tornadoes are looking to make history once again. “What I love most about Clinton is the tradition we have and getting the opportunity to chase after the 17th gold ball.”

VYPE: You’re headed to OU next fall. What made you decide to be a Sooner?
Elam: I decided to go to OU because it was my dream school. The coaches

VYPE: Your teammate Brighton Gilbert is headed to OSU. Have you two discussed what it will be like to see each other as an opponent?
Elam: We have not really talked much about it. I wish her the best as we both go our separate ways. VYPE: What’s the funniest thing you’ve seen or heard behind the plate?
Elam: One of the funniest things I have seen while catching is when one of my pitchers went to throw a pitch and the ball went to second base instead of home plate.
VYPE: What message do you want to give your teammates? Elam: I would tell my teammates to never stop working hard and to always play the game like it is your last. Be positive and always have fun playing.

This year the cheer squad battled through injuries to make the state competition despite the odds not being in their favor. “I enjoy being apart of the cheer team because I love being around all the girls on the team. At cheer we have made an effort to create a family like atmosphere; which helped us pull through and make

Lakota Beatty – Anadarko – Former Miss Basketball Oklahoma in 2013 and Gatorade Oklahoma Girls Player of the Year spent her first two seasons at Oklahoma State University before transferring to Oral Roberts University joining her sister Ashley. He later went to the University of Oklahoma as a running back and in 1939 he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates. McCullough would go
on to play for the Chicago Cardinals, Boston Yanks and the famed Steagles. McCullough played quarterback in the NFL.
Sheldon Wilson – Anadarko – The Warriors superstar rushed for 7,746 yards and 136 touchdowns in his career at Anadarko High School. In 2011 Wilson led the Warriors to a state championship in Class 3A. During his career at Anadarko Wilson averaged 10.5 yards per carry. Today Wilson is a member of the Southwestern Oklahoma State Bulldog football team.
Anadarko Warrior Football After six games the Warriors are 3-3, but two of those loses have come at seven points or less, which includes a six point loss to Class 4A Clinton. Here’s a closer look at the rest of the schedule and our prediction for the Warriors and their possible run through the playoffs.
Entering the 2016 season the Warriors were ranked No. 3 in Class 3A just behind Lincoln Christian and John Marshall. With Marshall ranked ahead of Anadarko, that also meant we selected them to finish second in district 3A-3. Early on the Warriors suffered a six point loss to 4A Clinton and a seven point loss to Douglass. The Warriors remaining regular season schedule is as follows; Oct. 14 vs. Marlow
Go Warriors!
Oct. 21 vs. Lexington Oct. 28 at Purcell
Nov. 4 at Bridge Creek THE PREDICTIONS
October 14th vs. Marlow – The Warriors will jump on Marlow early and never look back. Expect the Warriors to walk away with a 35-7 win at home.
Oct. 21st vs. Lexington – This will be the toughest test for the rest of the regular season. Look for both teams to slug it out. Hopefully weather doesn’t play a role in what could be an instant classic. The Warriors are always tough at home. Warriors win, 28-27. Oct. 28th at Purcell – A crucial road
game will help prepare this team for the playoffs. Purcell can be a hostile environment, but look for the Warrior faithful to make a good showing in this one as Anadarko comes from behind to get the win, 42-35.
Nov. 4th at Bridge Creek – In the final game of the regular season the Warriors will pull away from the Bobcats and actually get a chance to rest some players as they open up the offense and get an early, 21-0 lead. By the fourth quarter the Warriors are up, 35-8 and that’s how it ends.
Look for the Warriors to get hot at the right time and make a push for a top five spot going into the playoffs. From their it’s anyone’s game.

Ardmore Football 5 Reasons You Should Catch an Ardmore Football Game This Season 1 – The Team Is Loaded The Ardmore Tiger team has a talented roster featuring players like Chantz Scurry, Anthony Kimmons, Jordan Roberts, Jakwan Anderson and Deondrae Walker. The team has racked up some impressive yards on offense, especially on the rushing side with 1,608 yards after five games. 2 – That Tiger D
Led by the aforementioned Deondrae Walker, the Ardmore Tigers have only given up 69 points through five games and have held four opponents to 14 points or less. Walker has 39 tackles, while Nick Weldon sits at 28 and Quintarius Horton and Tyreece Lott are at 23 tackles. Lott also leads the team in
sacks.
3 – Take A Chantz With nearly 500 yards rushing through five games running back Chantz Scurry has a legit shot at hitting that 1,000yard mark this season. He’s averaging nearly nine yards per carry and has scored seven touchdowns. Scurry is worth the price of admission, lets hope health isn’t an issue. 4 – Atmosphere Is Everything
The Ardmore faithful have been out in force this year and the student section is always rocking. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of that?
Tyreece Lott 5 – 1992 The last time Ardmore won a football title. I’m sure you remember these names; Taj Johnson, coach Ronnie Tipps, Jeff Moser, and Dion Wiggins. That year the Tigers won the Class 5A title and went 14-0. They even finished the season ranked 25th in the country by USA Today. Going undefeated is not possible, but taking home the gold is still in play.
