Oklahoma VYPE talks all things football with Lawton Ike’s Bentley Bross and Lawton Mac’s Jacques Henderson
VYPE: What makes playing football at your school special? Bross: Getting to play with my brothers that I’ve been playing with for a long time. Henderson: Being able to play for the tradition the program holds.
VYPE: Is their one player college or pro that you model your game after? If so who is it? Bross: This one is just too hard for me to answer. Henderson: No.
VYPE: If you could play any other position besides what you already do what would you want to play and why? Bross: I would play free safety because I think my playing QB would help me know what the opposing QB was going to do with the ball.
Henderson: I would like to play running back because in my early years of football I played that same position.
VYPE: If your team wins the state title. Where do you and your teammates go to celebrate? Bross: My house.
Henderson: If we win state we would all go to Will’s (Collins) house. That’s a place we always go after big games. VYPE: One thing people don’t know about your football team is?
Bross: Eisenhower football is on the rise.. A lot of young talent. You all need to check out Rico Bussey and Gabe Moana.
Bentley Bross

VYPE: Who is one player you love to compete against either in practice or in a game? Caldwell III: Dylan Haworth, he is a beast of a man and it is always a challenge going up against him in practice I thank God that he wears a W on his helmet so I won’t have to play him Friday night.

Character is a combination of qualities that distinguishes one person or group from another. VYPE celebrates achievements of local high school athletes by presenting the monthly “Character Counts Award.”
Wade Haugen Weatherford High School
It is Wade Haugen’s team sensibility that is the foundation of his integrity. The junior is a multi-sport talent, showing athleticism as a wide receiver, quarterback and free safety on the gridiron, as well as on the basketball court and baseball diamond. Haugen said it’s his and the Eagles’ team-oriented play that has led them to a 6-2 season, but there is no doubt his receptions, including two touchdowns, have helped pave the road to success. Haugen also takes his “team first” idealism off the field into the community. He is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, National Honor Society and First United Methodist Church Youth Group. When asked what it is about him that led to his nomination for the Character Counts Athlete, Haugen’s tone was modest, yet insightful to how he lives his life. “Well, I stay out of trouble, try to always have a good attitude and be outgoing,” he said. “Just try to be a good example.”

Save Room On Podium for Clinton other big-names in the wrestling world.
“We changed our schedule around a bit,” Finch said. “We wrestled Vinita in a regular season dual in January and in a November regular season dual, we’ll wrestle Tuttle. You could say Finch isn’t afraid of taking a challenge.
Clinton 2014 By Sarah James
In his third year as Clinton’s head wrestling coach, Shawn Finch and his guys have a few surprises up their sleeves this year.
With four seniors on this year’s squad, Finch’s team is pretty young, but that won’t stop him and his guys from claiming the gold this season. “My junior high team has lost two duals in the last two years,” Finch said. “In my first year, we were conference champions and then conference runner-ups in my second year. This year, we are really, really good.”
In his first two years at the helm, Finch coached two all-state wrestlers, Marcus Thomas in 2013 and Ryan Williams in 2014. This year, the Red Tornado wrestlers are shooting for state.
“We want to claim state in Dual and in State,” Finch said. “Tuttle is the five-time defending state champion and we have worked really hard and I know our guys will be great.”
As Finch reminisces about his first two years, the only two losses came at the hands of Vinita, who ended up being state runner-ups and Altus, who finished in the top three last season in 5A. At 22-5 overall, Finch wanted to change some things up a bit to make his team known to the
Two seniors Finch knows will have great seasons are Bodhi Hines and David Flores. Hines (26-12 overall) and Flores (26-12 overall).
Hines was one match away from qualifying for state last year, but this season, Finch knows Hines and Flores can be crowned state champions.

“Pina was behind all-state wrestler Williams last year, and he would sub-in sometimes,” Finch said. “He beat several state qualifiers, but just wasn’t able to make our team. I know he’ll make a big difference this year.”
With hard work and great leaders from his seniors, Finch and his wrestlers will earn a place on the podium once February comes around.
“Our team is a pretty young team,” Finch said. “We have three different junior high state champions on our team, too, so we think our young guys have a chance to really help us out this year. Us coaches also think Hines and Flores can be a state champion.” Another wrestler Finch sees making a name for himself is sophomore Daniel Lopez. At 15-6 overall, Lopez will be back out on the mat after an injury sidelined him.
“As a freshman, Lopez was beating everyone he was wrestling until he broke his elbow at district,” Finch said. “He ended up beating someone who placed third at state. This year, us coaches think he’ll be really good.”
Coaches always like surprising their opponents. Finch isn’t any different. This year, he has several secret weapons he can’t wait to spring on opponents. “We have a couple of freshman coming in that are really, really, really good,” Finch said. “Greyson Weeden, who’s a freshman, is a junior high state champion. He hash’ t been beaten in a regular season match in a couple of years. At 19-0 overall, he’s that good.”
915 Frisco Ave Mon-Fri 8:30-6:30 Sat 9-5 Emergency Number 580-331-7210 most insurance accepted 16
Other wrestlers Finch wants people to keep an eye out for are junior Enrique Pina, junior Abel Gutierrez (21-15 overall) and senior Flavio DeAvila (25-15 overall).

Mason Bivens By Natascha Mercadante
Senior Mason Bivens and sophomore Mattie Bivens compete in cross country and are members of the Duncan High School marching band. Mason plays the trumpet and Mattie is one of two drum majors. Although they are very competitive, they both find time to help each other in band, cross country and spending time together as a family.
VYPE: When did you join cross country? How far have you come since then? Mattie: In sixth grade, as soon as I could. [I have progressed] a lot farther, I run a lot more and more. Running is also becoming a higher responsibility.
Mason: I joined it in the sixth grade the first time I got the opportunity and been with it ever since. Running one or two miles together was difficult. Then in sixth grade, I got used to doing it. From there I have come to doing 17 to 18 miles during freshman year and it has gotten easier. I have made big improvements. Now I am as fast as the guys that I wanted to be. I am that guy now. VYPE: Why cross country instead of another sport?
Mattie: [In middle school] I did it because it was the only sport offered that I enjoyed doing. Mason: I used to play soccer really competitively. I disliked the thought of running, and in my freshman year of playing soccer I got a shin injury. I needed

Mattie: Science, math and band. Band was always something I wanted to do. I did piano but I wanted to do something with a group. [I started] practicing for band daily and working on the smaller things and not working on the overall picture immediately. I like science because it is really hands on unlike everything else that’s pencil and paper. I enjoy math because I see it as more of a puzzle instead of a requirement for me. I have always wanted to be in band.
Mason: Most of my classes I have excelled in. I did some of the engineering contests at school, like the Co2 car races. I am in all upper level classes. Some of my family members were in engineering. I am really competitive in band; just about everyone in my family did it. My dad did some running when I was in sixth grade, and I recently found a passion for it. I ran with my dad quite a bit until freshman year. On occasion, he will go on a 9 to 10 mile run and rest a couple of days after. Academics are big in my family. My family guided me somewhat and pursued the introduction of the opening of doors. VYPE: Any plans to continue running or cross country after graduation?
Mattie: Probably not competitively. I plan on running on my own and running a 5K every once in a while. I like running, but I like it more to stay healthy than to run a race. Running competitively and the smallest things can ruin your career or a chance at a scholarship, like, if you break your toe, your career is over. You could break your own spirit by getting too into it.
Mason: Definitely. Running is actually one of the main courses I am looking for in a college. I do not have anywhere exactly picked out yet, but I am looking for a larger college with an opening for a runner. I would like to continue playing music. It is
a big part of my life.
VYPE: How do you support each other in cross country during meets, in practices and at home? Mattie: I cheer him on during meets while he races. I run with the team at practice while he does elite training. At home, I congratulate him, normally a “good job.
Mason: We do encourage each other to continue to keep going and push ourselves. We have inspirational talks and help each other with exercises. VYPE: Anything you do together outside of cross country?
Mattie: We are in band together and it is really competitive because he made a standard in band. It is hard to live up to his success. We sometimes go indoor rock climbing, mountain biking and go to the lake.
Mason: I am the trumpet soloist and she is the drum major. Every now and then we will go trail running, canoeing, kayaking and power kiting. We go sledding every time we have an ice day or snow outside. VYPE: What makes family special in competitive sports?
Mattie: It is the feeling that everyone understands what you are doing because everyone is doing it.
Mason: For me, all of us are in competitive sports so it is easy to pick up those sports.

Moms of the
Month
Debra Pippin & Lisa Hall - Duncan Head cheerleading coach Carrie Anne Davis and the Duncan varsity cheer squad were lucky this season to have the support of a pair of committed mothers this season. “These mothers helped out with getting fundraisers set up, collected and distributed. They help making the hair bows for special events and hosted a team breakfast before our regional competition,” said coach Davis. Debra Pippin is the mother of cheerleader Kamrin Gay, while Lisa Hall is mom to Caylee Hall. “Debra and Lisa help me get in touch with all of the parents and they put together gift bags for the cheerleaders before competition. They are always willing to help during practices or games,” said coach Davis. The Duncan cheer squad worked hard this season and made vast improvements as they continue to build a solid program. Coach Davis said the support she received from the parents was amazing this year. “All of my cheer mom’s are great. I can count on any of them at any time.” Debra Pippin and Lisa Hall went about and beyond for the Duncan varsity cheer squad making the pair the Bank of Commerce Mom’s of the Month.

For her continued dedication to become yet another great Marlow runner; Rylee Rich is the Marlow Female Athlete of the Month.
O’Dell is also a playmaker on the defensive side of the ball. Through the first eight games of the season O’Dell made 53 tackles and intercepted two passes. O’Dell also makes contributions on special teams as the Marlow punter and kicker. On his first 30 punts of the year O’Dell has averaged 38.4 yards per punt and is also three of four on field goals this year with a long of 37. This cross country season Rylee enhanced that tradition even more as she won the regional meet at Velma-Alma with a time of 12:29 then went on to finish second at the Class 3A state meet with a time of 12:23. Then we faced a good team in Ringling on the road for a district title. We couldn’t pull out a win there, but the kids played hard. It’s a difficult game for our guys. They’re only eight miles away and many of our kids know their kids, some are related to each other. So it’s a tough game.
VYPE: Offensively your team has dominated opponents. What’s been the key to your offense?
Mark Barrett Healdton went 8-2 in the regular season under the leadership of Mark Barrett. VYPE caught up with the head coach as he was painting the field for the home playoff game in 10 years.
VYPE: Thanks for taking time away from painting the field to chat with us coach. Sounds like you guys are getting ready for that big playoff game with Minco. Barrett: Yes, we’re ready, the kids are ready. Its been a good year and this team is looking forward to the game. VYPE: Coach, your team enjoyed a great run after the week two lose to Stratford on the road. What’s been the difference since that game? Barrett: We went on a seven game winning streak after the lost to Stratford.

Barrett: Chaz Carr has put up some great numbers this year. He has 2,177 yards rushing and has carried the load for this team. I’m an old school kind of coach. I like to run the Power I or Pro I not the spread motion stuff you see everyone running today. That’s been the difference for us this year. We made a few changes after the Stratford loss and it’s helped this team move the football and win games. We changed the blocking scheme and it made all of the difference. VYPE: Your defense has played well despite giving up a few points in a couple of games.
Barrett: Yes, we gave up 35 points to Empire, but we scored 62. Empire had the Twigg kid. He was a good test for the defense. We gave up points early in the season, but they got better as the season went on. VYPE: Who are some of the guys that really stepped up this year?
Barrett: Mark Mincey is a fullback who loves to make those pancake blocks. He is the best blocking back
I’ve coached in 20 years. Mincey takes pride in his blocking. Guard Andy Jackson is only a sophomore, but he’s been a big reason we’re able to open those holes for Carr. Chase Toliver is a freshman, but he’s played great this year. Wide reciver Cameron Webb has allowed us to throw slants or posts when the defense starts to play up. He’s given us a real threat downfield. Our quarterback has played great and several others have stepped up this season. VYPE: Is community support up?
Barrett: Support has been amazing. The kids worked hard in the offseason and at 7-on-7 and the town and parents know that. The fans are behind the kids. The town is painted blue, white and black and the fans are ready for the playoffs. It’s our first time to host a playoff game in 10 years. VYPE: Coach, good luck in the playoffs.
Barrett: Thank you. If we can go out and beat Minco in the first round then we go on the road to Thomas. Should be fun.

Wilmany: The best thing about AHS is how we are one big family, we’ve pretty much all grown up together. Also, our school spirit and pride. Our blue crew, cheerleaders, dance team, band and other clubs and groups always support the Bulldogs in each and every sport. Spandley: The best thing about AHS is our school spirit (especially from our awesome blue crew) and the immense support we receive from our community.
Shannon Ybarra Gabe Barton VYPE: Tell us one thing people in Oklahoma don’t know about Altus High School or the city of Altus? Ybarra: The city of Altus is built on sports. It’s how we all come together.
Benway: I don’t think the people know how good the history of football is in Altus. We kind of fell
Benway: I try to eat something different every day of the week.
Wilmany: I buy my lunch in the rotary, with all of my friends in A lunch. Spandley: I think everyone’s go to lunch at Altus High is pizza. We could probably break a pizza eating record!
VYPE: Give us your personal favorite sports moment at Altus this year?
Jewel Wilmany off the map for a while, but the Bulldogs are back! Wilmany: This year is the first year we’ve gone to playoffs for football in a long while.
Spandley: Our staff and board are always working to better our education by looking for the newest and most effective forms of teaching and implementing the newest forms of technology. VYPE: What is your favorite subject in school?
Ybarra: My favorite subject is art. I get to forget about what is going on in life and just let myself go through art. Benway: History. Coach Lamb’s class. He also coaches me at corner.
Wilmany: My favorite subject would have to be Pre-Ap Chem or Math.
Ybarra: My favorite sports moment is our devotionals that we get from our youth pastor, Kent Jaggers. He inspires us to look towards God and he inspires us to do great. Benway: Being out there on defense when we stopped Ardmore on a goal line stand to win in overtime and seeing our entire student section and fans rush the field.
Wilmany: My favorite sport moment would definitely, without a doubt, be defeating Ardmore, the No.1 team in our 5A district. It was amazing to see all the progression we’ve made this year, show in that game. The boys and coaches really wanted that win and they got it. It was unforgettable. Spandley: My absolute favorite moment this year was beating Ardmore in overtime and running on the field and going crazy with all of the players and coaches. I will definitely never forget that day! VYPE: One thing you would add or change at Altus High?
Spandley: My favorite subjects are Calculus and English.
Ybarra: There’s nothing I would change at Altus!
Ybarra: My go-to lunch at school is two sandwiches and a Gatorade.
Wilmany: I honestly wouldn’t change anything about AHS, it’s a great school to attend and represent.
VYPE: What is your go-to lunch at school?
Benway: I wouldn’t change anything.
Jayden Benway Spandley: If I could add anything to Altus High School it would probably be a study hall hour. This would make the homework strain easier on those with after school activities or jobs. VYPE: Who has better fans, Altus, Duncan or Ardmore and why?
Ybarra: Altus. No doubt about it. We have fans that come support the Bulldogs in every sport and they’re always cheering us on. Benway: No question, Altus. We have the best fans in all of Class 5A. If you get a chance come down to Hightower Memorial Stadium and watch us play a home game. I know it’s the loudest place I’ve ever played.
Wilmany: Of course Altus. We have good sportsmanship, win or lose. Now Ardmore, of course no one likes to lose, but the way Ardmore took their loss did not represent their school well at all. Duncan, I guess we will see after the game. Spandley: In the most unbiased way possible. Altus High School definitely has the best fans in all of 5A Oklahoma football. When the boys walk on that field every seat in the home side is filled with someone cheering them on win or lose!

Walker: My favorite play was the kick return I ran back for a touchdown against Ada. I caught the ball and looked at my field position, I made a good cutback to the right and broke a tackle. I had nothing but open field all to myself. No one could catch me.
Walker: Jarrad Hall. He’s been a good leader and makes plays when we need them. Ruhl: I think Tyreece Lott really has played amazing coming in as a sophomore. He really stepped up this season.
VYPE: What is the legacy this team is leaving behind for future generations of Tiger football? Walker: The legacy we are leaving behind is to be all-in and to play with heart, dignity and togetherness.
Ruhl: The legacy we will leave behind is being a sound, disciplined team.
Ruhl: My favorite play of the season was against Del City, chasing the quarterback across the field just to try and make a play.
VYPE: What’s been the key in this football team having a successful season? Walker: Everybody is committed and can see the big picture. VYPE: Who on the squad keeps everyone laughing?
Bronwyn McNeil Plainview cheerleaders Catie Richards, Greta Russell, Kaitlynn Morris and Bronwyn McNeil paused from practice and homework to answer some questions about the squad, the season and their plans after high school. VYPE: What is your most memorable moment of the season?
Richards: My most memorable moment from this season would be attending 4A Cheer competition for the first time in Plainview history as a senior.
Russell: My most memorable moment is when I got my back handspring again after breaking my arm. Morris: My most memorable moment this season was when we all were praying right before we went on at the regional competition. It was the first year our school has ever competed and it was cool to be apart of the team that got to get our program running again. McNeil: I think my most memorable
Richards: We’re all pretty fun to be around and keep each other laughing, especially Brittney Davis. She’s a goofball.
Russell: Yes, Catherine Richards is always a comedian.
Morris: Someone that always keeps us laughing is Brittney Davis. She is always making serious moments fun and relaxed.
McNeil: The girl on the squad that keeps everyone laughing is definitely one of the juniors, Brittney Davis. She is always keeping us laughing and having a great time with funny stories, comments, and faces. VYPE: How do you want your class to be remembered? Richards: I hope my class will be remembered as the senior class that was accepting to underclassman, and showed them it’s okay to be cool with everyone.
Russell: I want my class to be remembered as the smartest, yet most fun class throughout high school.
Morris: I want our class to be remembered for getting our program up and going. McNeil: I want my class to be remembered for our leadership and ability to have fun while being a role model for others. VYPE: Do you have a ritual or superstition before you take the floor or perform at a game?
Catie Richards on an academic scholarship, and major in Pre-Law. Russell: I plan on going to college and cheering on the sidelines for my team. I have not decided a major.
Morris: After high school I will be attending Oklahoma State University to major in dietetics and hopefully go to occupational therapy school. McNeil: My plans for after high school are a lot different than any of the other people in my class. After graduation I am planning on leaving the country and volunteering at an Orphanage in Honduras. I have been numerous times to this particular orphanage, Orphanage Emmanuel, but I have recently felt called to spend my entire summer of 2015 beyond the borders and helping these children. When I get back in August I will attend Abilene Christian University and I plan to either major in missions or Spanish.
Richards: Pre-game prayer is key!
Russell: I always listen to music before away games, and my friend and I always do our kicks together before the game starts. Morris: We pray before games and competition.
McNeil: Before a game we always have to get everything prepared. VYPE: What are your plans after high school?
