Three of the most blue-collar athletes in southwest Oklahoma give editor Ties Family Kyle Kendrick a look inside their live as student-athletes and what makes them tick. Roberson sisters’ bond only grows stronger with the help of Weatherford volleyball By: Kyle Kendrick
When you are talking about Weatherford volleyball it’s impossible not to mention the name Roberson.
Rilee Roberson, graduated from Weatherford in May but is now back as an assistant junior high coach this season while attending Southwestern Oklahoma State University and majoring in Health Science. Bailee Roberson, is just a couple years younger than Rilee and is a junior at Weatherford this year but is sidelined for volleyball season with her second torn ACL of her high school career. Finally, Aviree Roberson, the youngest of the Roberson sisters is currently a seventh grader at Weatherford and plays on the junior high team for the Lady Eagles.

but her being there has really helped me and it’s just a really big blessing,” I love being able to be around Aviree too, she is going to be a really good player. It’s just really awesome to have both my sisters out there.”
around her sisters and working toward the same common goal has been a great experience.
Aviree also said she loves being around her big sisters playing the sport she loves.
“It’s been fun to hang out with both of them. With me being out of the house now I don’t get to see them as much so it’s really nice to be able to know when I come to volleyball practice I will see both of them,” Rilee said.
“I like it because I started volleyball at a young age because of them and now I get to go to high school practices with them,” Aviree said.
“Aviree listens well and when I’m coaching her a lot of times I just have to give her a look and she knows what she needs to do or what she needs to fix,” Rilee said. “All the girls listen well really and they are doing really good.”
With the three sisters enjoying the experi ence of being within the same program s much it would be easy to think that for at least the next few years that would continue. And it might, at least for another ye that is until Bailee graduates.

Just like any set of siblings though it isn’t all sunshine and roses. Just ask Aviree, who is being coached by her oldest sister. “It’s fun sometimes but she gets mad at me a lot easier than some of the other girls,” Aviree said.
Bailee had a similar sentiment about the chance to be a part of the same program as her sisters.
Bailee echoed Aviree in saying that there have been some occasional rough waters as the year has gone on.
“I think we are all hard on each other. It can be aggravating sometimes but in the end it has strengthened our bond. We all know we are trying to help each other be better,” Bailee said.
“I was a little sad when Rilee graduated and moved out of the house
Lawton Christian volleyball player Rylee McKee is more than your average student-athlete. Find out what makes her special.
“A lot of the time the girls may come to m and ask me questions or ask me to look for certain things and I just try to give my input when they need me,” Bailee said. “I think being able to see everything from th sidelines has made me better because no I can see everything.”
Making each other better often doesn’t even involve a single word being said according to Rilee.
Rilee added that she thinks that what has helped her this year is understanding what the junior high players are going through, having gone through some of the same things herself not too long ago.

Spending so much time together as part of the same program may put a strain on some sibling relationships, not the Roberson’s though. Rilee said that the experience of being

“I understand what they are going through. It wasn’t that long ago since I was in their shoes, so when one of them is having a bad day I just try and understand where they are coming from and what they need from me,” Rilee said.
Though
While Rilee is helping to coach up Aviree and the junior high team, Bailee is serving as somewhat of an unofficial assistant coach by coming to each and every practice despite not being able to play due to her injury.
Whatever the future may or may not hold for the Roberson’s one thing is for sure th are enjoying the ride they are on togethe right now and their bond as sisters is bett for it.

Welcome to the New & Improved VYPE Magazine By Kyle Kendrick – Editor VYPE Southwest Oklahoma
Let me start this column by introducing myself. I’ve been at VYPE for over two years now and am halfway through year number three. Before that I worked at several newspapers in Oklahoma and Kansas. Now onto what this magazine is really about the coaches, athletes and parents of Southwest Oklahoma. Before coming to VYPE I had a great amount of respect for the types of athletes that came out of southwest Oklahoma. Athletes like Jackie Sherill, Johnny Bench, Stacey King and Will Shields just to name a few. And while all of those athletes were great at what they did, they were all also willing to sacrifice for the overall betterment of the team and do the work that went unnoticed by most but was heavily recognized by their teammates and coaches.
go into making something great. That’s something other places in the world don’t have and that’s why I am so excited to be the editor in charge of running this magazine. In this issue I have tried to showcase the “blue-collar” athletes that are willing to do the dirty work to make their team better. In some cases, those athletes are the stars of the team, in other cases you won’t find these athletes on any stat sheet. No matter what the case is though their coaches and teammates have taken notice of what they do and that’s what truly matters.
Let me add that if you have comments or questions about this issue don’t be afraid to email me at kyle.kendrick@vype.com or hit me up on Twitter @kylekendrick1 either is fine and more than welcome. I want this magazine to be something the people of southwest Oklahoma enjoy readSince coming to work at VYPE I’ve come ing and in order to do that I need your to the realization that attitude permeates feedback. SWOK News and Notes SEVEN TEAMS OFF TO UNDEFEATED STARTS: With over half the season in the bank Class 5A schools Ardmore and Lawton MacArthur are both unbeaten. Class 4A Tuttle has yet to suffer a loss and neither has Lindsay, Kingston, Alex or Minco. Those seven teams haven’t all been unbeaten at the same time this late in a season since before the year 2000. SWOK DOMINATES STATE VOLLEYBALL FIELDS: Cache, Clinton, Corn Bible Academy and Union City all qualified for state volleyball tournaments. None of those teams were ranked above No. 5 headed into the regional tournaments.

Hinton Cheer: The Hinton Lady Comets couldn’t quite earn a state title but they did perform very well at the state competition finishing in third place in Class 2A.
BINGER-ONEY SWEEPS CLASS A: The baseball and softball teams from Binger-Oney pulled off a rare sweep and won both the Class A baseball and softball championships earlier this year. Red Oak swept Class B in 2012 but no team has ever swept Class A. Dale is the only team who has come close when they won Class A fall baseball in 2003 and 2A softball the same year. SPECIAL THANKS: This issue wouldn’t have been possible with several very important people. Photographers Mike Mazzo, Terrence Young and Wes Sharp all helped put together some of the amazing content you will see in this magazine. VYPE would also like to thank David Wolman at the Daily Ardmoreite for helping with various info and photos. Finally we would love to thank the athletes, coaches and parents in the region; without you this magazine would never exist, let alone be the quality publication it is today.

Elgin Blue Collar Q&A
VYPE: You’re coach praised you and your work ethic. How much pride do you take in being the type of an athlete always willing to do the dirty work to help the team win?
Poindexter: My pride is an anchor of my sports life. I know it takes toughness, some blood, sweat, and tears, and selflessness to be a role player. I know my role on my team and I understand that I have to be willing to sell out for my team and throw my heart into the game in order to see results! I also understand that there is no I in team, that’s it we before me, so whatever my team and coaches need me to do is exactly what I will do because it is for the team’s best interest! Wander: I never really think anything of being the one killing myself and doing the dirty work for my team especially if it helps us get the outcome of a win. I’ve always felt that if I can’t put forth 100 percent and do something to help my team there was no point in being out no the court. Every second out on the court should be taken advantage of and not wasted. VYPE: The last song you downloaded was.....? Poindexter: The last song I downloaded on my phone was Love Myself by Haley Steinfeld! Wander: Omen by Disclosure ft. Sam Smith VYPE: Most embarrassing song on your iPod is.....? Poindexter: The most embarrassing song on my phone would probably be the Cupid Shuffle! (I still dance to it when it comes on!) Wander: Probably my Hannah Montana album as a whole that I still have. Lol. VYPE: What is one thing you hope your teammates and opponents remember you for?
Emily Poindexter Elgin Softball
Poindexter: To my teammates, I want to be remembered for my work ethic. I want them to remember me
as somebody who always gave 100% and always left everything on the field. I want them to look up to me and know that they can always depend on me. For my opponents, I want them to remember me as a challenge, somebody that they can’t overlook. I want them to look at me and think “I’m going to have to work harder because of her.” I want them to remember me as a game changer and somebody that they couldn’t stop.
Heather Wander Elgin Volleyball
Wander: One thing I hope to be remembered for is an athlete. The word athlete is so misunderstood sometimes. Just because you play a sport doesn’t make you an athlete. I feel an athlete is someone who goes out and actually competes, works hard, sets goals, accomplishes those goals, and is a key leader. Not someone who just sees the sport as something fun to do to waste time and barely tries. Not someone who bosses teammates around but someone who pushes and competes WITH and/or beside them. VYPE: If you could tell incoming freshman one thing what piece of advice would you give them? Poindexter: A piece of advice I have for freshman is don’t get too caught up in the hype. It’s easy to lose yourself because you want to conform to what the typical “cool high schooler” looks like. Stay true to yourself, stick with your beliefs, and don’t do anything that you aren’t comfortable with. Wander: A piece of advice for incoming freshman would be to make the best of the moments while they are here, strive and conquer goals, and never ever give up. It will be tough, tiring, and stressful at moments but that all comes with being an athlete. However, just enjoy the years because they go by so fast. Always remember to have fun and make lots of funny and even sometimes embarrassing memories with your teammates. smile emoticon.

Miller: Yes, when I was a sophomore I looked up to Oron Bowman who was a senior at the time.
VYPE: You are considered blue-collar now. Do you ever see yourself as white collar (like working in management or an office somewhere) in the future?
Aponte: I don’t have just one individual person I look up to. I try and take everyone’s best skill and master it.
Beard: Not really an office but I want to help people and become a therapist.
VYPE: Is there an opposing player you like to compete against? Why?
Miller: Yes, I do see myself becoming a white-collar worker because I want to major in Mechanical Engineering. Aponte: Yes, I see myself in the medical field. I want to study Sports Medicine and possibly work for a college or professional team. VYPE: Is there a player that you looked up to when you were younger, maybe someone who was a senior when you were a freshman or sophomore, that you have tried to model yourself after? Beard: I like to compete against Heaven McGee because she’s a really good blocker so I like challenging her a lot.
Miller: One thing a lot of people don’t know about me is that I have a little sister who is ten years old named Jerney.
Miller: No there isn’t a player I specifically like to go against on another team, but I do like always going against my friend Preston Phillips in practice.
Aponte: One thing people don’t know about me is that I et nervous before every game.
Aponte: I like going up against all my opponents so I can better myself. VYPE: Do you have any pregame rituals or routines? If so what are they? Beard: No not really. I just have my lucky socks. Miller: I don’t really have any pregame rituals, but I do always listen to the hard rock strength training station on Pandora. Aponte: My pregame ritual is grabbing dirt and rubbing it on my hands. After that my team and I pray. VYPE: Best movie you have seen lately? Beard: Jurrassic World. Miller: Either Kingsman or Avengers: Age of Ultron. Aponte: Inside Out. VYPE: One thing most people don’t know about you is? Beard: Most people don’t know that I haven’t been playing volleyball that long.
VYPE: Best thing about being a student-athlete at your school? Beard: The teachers love you. They are very supportive and always smiling or willing to help you. Miller: The best thing about being a student-athlete at Chickasha is the environment around the school. Everyone is always hyped up and encouraging other teams and players at school. Aponte: The best thing about being a student athlete at Lawton High is that they always put academics before sports. VYPE: : What is one thing you hope your teammates and your opponents remember you for?
Beard: I want to thank my best friend Alexis for always being there for me and cheering me up when I’m down. I also want to thank coach Lard for always pushing me and getting me into volleyball. Miller: I want to thank my parents for keeping me in football from the age of four, and I want to thank my teammates and coaches for pushing me to become the best that I can be everyday. Aponte: I’d like to give special thanks to my parents for always being there and providing me with the best tools to succeed in this sport. My siblings for those great pep talks and all my coaches I’ve ever had that help me get better. Especially my school coach Michael Rutledge, for believing in me and pushing me to be a better player or person on and off the field. I want to thank my teammates that I have a special bond with and lastly VYPE Magazine for taking your time to do this.
Beard: I hope they remember me for not only being a good player but also a hard worker. Miller: I hope my teammates and opponents both remember me for going as hard as I can every play and never giving up. Aponte: I hope my teammates and opponents will remember that I had the right attitude and that I’m a hustler. VYPE: That’s all the questions but if you want to add a comment or thank your parents, teammates or coaches you can do that here.

Lawton Christian Senior
Rylee McKee brings a great attitude and a love of Christ to the court
When asked to describe Rylee McKee, Lawton Christian head volleyball Alisha Corrales used words like leader and high character but above all else one statement stood out. “Rylee is just a great teammate and a great person. She really has a servant’s heart,” Corrales said. Corrales went on to praise McKee for some of the specific sacrifices she has
made for the team and the little things she does for her team. “This is her third year to play varsity for us and has always played all the way around in every rotation, this year though we have gone to really just using her as a setter on the back end so she isn’t in each rotation but she still always stays involved,” Corrales said. “If she is on the bench she is always encouraging her teammates or telling them to look out for this or look out for that, which is exactly what you want from somebody in her position.” Along with volleyball McKee is also a member of the Lawton Christian softball team, a member of the student council, a member of the yearbook staff and a member of Frontline, Lawton Christian’s honor choir. McKee is also actively involved in her church and recently went to Memphis, Tennessee. During the mission trip McKee went with her youth group to spend some time with kids who lived in a “rough” apartment complex to lead a Backyard Bible Club. While they were there, a unit in the complex caught fire and McKee
and her group helped to comfort the families living in the complex. After high school Rylee plans to attend Cameron University and major in Political Science. After obtaining her college degree McKee said she hopes to someday be an Oklahoma state senator. For now though, McKee is focused on helping her team win another state title and enjoying her time as a student-athlete at Lawton Christian which she says is made special by the relationship with her teammates. “It’s the fact that all my teammates are my friends. On both the softball and volleyball teams, all the girls and I have a great relationship. We have a special bond with each other, and I think that’s because at LCS the coaches and faculty have taught us how to love each other as Christ first loved us,” McKee said. “I love being an athlete at Lawton Christian because God is in the center of our athletics. Win or lose, the glory goes to God and at the end of the day that’s all that matters.”

Altus Mom of the Month
Diane Beach - Altus Mom Diane Beach, the mother of Altus sophomore running back Kory Beach, is the type of mom that keeps programs running smoothly behind the scenes. That fact, was the reason that Altus head football coach Jeremy Reed was quick to nominate Diane as the Altus Mom of the Month. Diane is part of the All-American Sports Association in Altus and the 12th Man Club along with helping with meals for the Bulldogs players after games and fundraising efforts for the team. “My mom should be the Mom of the Month because she always makes sure everyone is taken care of; whether that be our players, coaches, trainers or bus drivers,” Kory said. She has helped me individually as an athlete by always motivating me and making sure I’m always going 100 percent.” Along with Kory, Diane also has a younger son, Derek, that is in the eighth grade at Altus who plays football, basketball and baseball for the Bulldogs. Diane also has two older sons Jason and Jordan who have already graduated high school. For her unending dedication to not only her own children but also every student-athlete in Altus, Diane Beach is the Altus Mom of the Month.

Bulldogs Buzz By Brad Gilbert, Altus Times
Many coaches throughout history, across all ages and all sports, would probably pay whatever the cost for the magical formula that provides the team with that much needed, but ever elusive, chemistry necessary to have great seasons.
However, no such formula exists. The team either has it or it doesn’t. It s a natural thing. Although it is labeled an intangible, there is no doubt by anyone close to the team that you can feel it. Before the 2015 version of the Altus Bulldogs began, I felt it. On a hot August afternoon, I left practice that day with chills. Head Coach Jeremy Reed, gathered his Bulldog minions at the end of practice. It’s the time for immediate information pertinent to the team like uniform selection, times and schedules, and reminders of parental forms, physical forms.
Jeremy Reed Coach Reed stated it was time for the day’s BULLDOG SPOTLIGHT, and declared he had made his choice. The name Brenden Phillips was announced. A somewhat vertically challenged underclassmen with a neck like a tree trunk rose to his feet and was on display in front of his teammates as they knelt.
Coach Reed remarked that Brenden’s efforts in practice were deserving recognition, and further commented on specific details of Brenden’s desire for perfection when running fullback drills. Reed acknowledged
Brenden’s coachability, citing the way Brenden performs his fullback drills as he has been coached to do, evidenced by how he carries the
football high and tight on every rep. Reed made clear that Brenden adding extra yardage down field to finish runs in practice would not go unnoticed. Neither would Brenden’s constant encouragement of his teammates.
It made for a good moment for sure, but no chills yet. Then, one by one and in no pre-planned order, Brendan’s fellow teammates, his Bulldog brothers, lifted themselves to their feet in order to lift Brenden up, which lifted us all up.
With no embarrassment from having to talk in public and with no quiet quivering voice that we have come to expect from this young generation, each of Brenden’s peers stood because they had something positive to say about him.
could get real with each other and come away with a clear understanding of just what the Bulldogs are trying to do this season Just typing that sentence gave me chills.
After spotlighting Brenden, the team rose to its feet and hoisted their helmets in solidarity. Brenden shouted toward every opponent on the schedule, “1!…. 2!… 3!” The entire Bulldog collective loudly followed the countdown and broke the team out of practice with, “F A M I L Y!”
Vargas added, “You think that Bulldog spotlight was cool, you should’ve seen 27 grown, tough, football guys in a room, and through tears, expressing nothing but positivity, love and commitment to each other. You would’ve had chills.” We are way ahead of you on that one coach. GO BULLDOGS !!
This was much more than a good moment. As soon as I got a grasp on > what was actually going on, the goosebumps grew on me. It was obvious our good moment was in fact, a life-changing event. Imagine your coach calling you out and letting it be known by everyone there that your work ethic is worthy of praise. Then, your brothers who you knock heads with everyday as you battle for playing time and roster spots were now standing with you, looking at you and offering their perceptions of you in only positive tones.
I’m sure it was a heart-beating, humbling experience like nothing else. I know it was for me and I’m not even Brenden. Coaches got involved by talking on Brenden’s weight room time being well spent. They bragged on his efforts to get better. I had to ask defensive coordinator, Coach Vargas, if this BULLDOG SPOTLIGHT, was a new thing. I don’t always stick around until the team breaks it out at the end of practice, but I’ve been there for several and haven’t seen this happen. Vargas confirmed it was new and started with the three-day seniors and coaching staff “retreat” before the season. I haven’t asked any of them about said retreat because that was for them, not for us. That was a team cohesion, bond building, chemistry brewing getaway where these 27 men

Roberson sisters’ bond only grows stronger with the help of Weatherford volleyball By: Kyle Kendrick When you are talking about Weatherford volleyball it’s impossible not to mention the name Roberson. Spending so much time together as part of the same program may put a strain on some sibling relationships, not the Roberson’s though. Rilee said that the experience of being around her sisters and working toward the same common goal has been a great experience. “It’s been fun to hang out with both of them. With me being out of the house now I don’t get to see them as much so it’s really nice to be able to know when I come to volleyball practice I will see both of them,” Rilee said. VYPEOK.COM

OCTOBER 2015
Bailee had a similar sentiment about the chance to be a part of the same program as her sisters. “I was a little sad when Rilee graduated and moved out of the house but her being there has really helped me and it’s just a really big blessing,” I love being able to
be around Aviree too, she is going to be a really good player. It’s just really awesome to have both my sisters out there.”
AVIREE ROBERSON, BAILEE ROBERSON, RILEE ROBERSON
Aviree also said she loves being around her big sisters playing the sport she loves. “I like it because I started volleyball at a young age because of them and now I get to go to high school practices with them,” Aviree said. Just like any set of siblings though it isn’t all sunshine and roses. Just ask Aviree, who is being coached by her oldest sister. “It’s fun sometimes but she gets mad at me a lot easier than some of the other girls,” Aviree said. Bailee echoed Aviree in saying that there have been some occasional rough waters as the
year has gone on. “I think we are all hard on each other. It can be aggravating sometimes but in the end it has strengthened our bond. We all know we are trying to help each other be better,” Bailee said. Making each other better often doesn’t even involve a single word being said according to Rilee. “Aviree listens well and when I’m coaching her a lot of times I just have to give her a look and she knows what she needs to do or what she needs to fix,” Rilee said. “All the girls listen well really and they are doing really good.” Rilee added that she thinks that
what has helped her this year is understanding what the junior high players are going through, having gone through some of the same things herself not too long ago. “I understand what they are going through. It wasn’t that long ago since I was in their shoes, so when one of them is having a bad day I just try and understand where they are coming from and what they need from me,” Rilee said. While Rilee is helping to coach up Aviree and the junior high team, Bailee is serving as somewhat of an unofficial assistant coach by coming to each and every practice despite not being able to play due to her injury.

need me,” Bailee said. “I think being able to see everything from the sidelines has made me better because now I can see everything.” With the three sisters enjoying the experience of being within
the same program so much it would be easy to think that for at least the next few years that would continue. And it might, at least for another year that is until Bailee graduates. “As of right now I think I would like to go to NSU, OU or OSU so I wouldn’t be around to come back and help coach like Rilee. I would probably just come back to help Aviree however I could,” Bailee said. Whatever the future may or may not hold for the Roberson’s one thing is for sure they are enjoying the ride they are on together right now and their bond as sisters is better for it.

She’s always finding a way to make herself better. Kassidy is already a good ball player and I guarantee you by the time she’s a Junior or Senior that she will be doing big things. VYPE: What is the best thing about playing sports in Anadarko? Newton: Playing sports in Anadarko has always been a great experience. I’ve been able to play with some great athletes over time , but I’d have to say the best thing about playing in Anadarko is the drive to be great. Everyone here wants to win and make something out of themselves. We don’t like to settle for mediocrity. We want to be the best. Obviously we aren’t always the best but we never stop striving to be the best. McCann: The support that the sports get from our community.

Chickasha senior Amanda Bradford has made her last season on the diamond wearing a Chickasha uniform a special one. Heading into October Chickasha was ranked No. 1 in Class 4A and hadn’t lost a game to a 4A school all year long. Bradford has been instrumental in that success playing third base for the Lady Chicks and wielding a big stick at the plate. In a 9-1 win over Deer Creek on senior night Bradford went 2-for-3, including a two-RBI double. “It’s been very fun & memorable. We’ve worked hard to get where we are and there’s no doubt in my mind we will win state this year,” Bradford said. As for the legacy she has left Bradford said she hopes the younger players have learned one thing above all else and that is that “hard work pays off in the end.” For her effort on the diamond Amanda Bradford is the Chickasha “Blue-Collar” Female Athlete of the Month.

Character is a combination of qualities that distinguishes one person or group from another. State Farm celebrates achievements of local high school athletes by presenting the monthly “Character Counts Award.”
The Chickasha Fightin’ Chicks football team has plenty of talented players dotting their roster, players that have given everything they have to the jersey they wear and the teammates that share the locker room with them. One such player is senior running back Braeden Blakes. Blakes has been making his senior year a memorable one with big games this year against quality opponents. When the Fightin’ Chicks took on a very good Cache squad earlier this year Blakes ran for 68 yards. MOM OF THE Jennifer Bivens Duncan Mom
MONTH
Jennifer Bivens is a busy and active mom of three kids Mason (18), Mattie (16), and Moira (15). Mason is a freshman at Oklahoma City University where he runs cross country. Mattie is a junior at Duncan High School where she runs cross country and track, plays soccer, and is the drum major for the band. Moira is a freshman at Duncan High School where she runs track and cross country, plays soccer, and plays the trombone in the band. With such busy kids, Jennifer is constantly on the run, helping out with a little bit of everything. She helps set up for the cross country meets and is in charge of recording the runners’ times once they cross the finish line. For band, Jennifer helps with the Dehydrator, an annual bike race held in Duncan that is a major fundraiser for the Duncan band. In this race, Jennifer is in charge of all of the rest stops, which provide water to the competing bikers. When track season rolls around, Jennifer helps set up for home meets, as well as man the data entries station, which enters runners’ times into a computer system. Not only is she a big supporter of her kids’ sports, she also loves to watch other high school sports. Jennifer and her family are season ticket holders for all sports. She says that she loves to “see the development and improvement in all athletes, especially runners.” For all of these reasons and many more, Jennifer Bivens has earned the title of Duncan Mom of the Month.

practice in the rain one morning for an hour because she didn’t have a ride. She plays any position you ask her to and learns it pretty quickly. Her name won’t show up in stats but she makes everybody around her better because she works so hard. Kennedy Stewart – Duncan Demons 3B
Her coach said: Kennedy is the hardest working girl I have ever coached. Her summer workouts include a daily softball workout, a pole vault workout and a hurdle workout. She also works out on weights with her uncle and those workouts include free weights and a sledge hammer workout. She’s a 4.0 student and a great kid. Kylie Fears – Duncan Demons Cheer
Amirra Beard Her teammate said: I would definitely say the hardest worker is Kylie Fears. She always has such a positive attitude and she never gives up. She has worked hard all of her life for her different teams and she’s always wanting to push herself and go beyond her limits.
Evan Whitt – Empire Bulldogs G His coach said: Evan is an extremely hard worker who is the first in the gym and the last one to leave. He is an exceptional player who thinks of others first while still averaging doubledoubles in points and rebounds. Sherre Dewey – Empire Bulldogs PG
Kylie Fears Nicole Bevans – Duncan Demons F/G Her coach said: Nicole is a senior that has worked hard all summer long. She will be a key back up at the post and her minutes could grow as the season goes on.
Her coach said: Sherre is our senior leader that participates in every sport and activity. Her work ethic and enthusiasm is relentless and second to none. Nathan Clark – Duncan Demons F
His coach said: Nathan is one of those
players that does the dirty work. He doesn’t have the glamourous stats (7 ppg, 6.5 rpg) but he is a superstar. He always guards the other team’s best player and is a huge part of not only our team but our whole program. All he cares about is winning and he will do whatever it takes to make the team successful. Justin Morris – Duncan Demons G
His coach said: There isn’t a game, practice or drill where Justin doesn’t give his full effort. He dives on the floor for every loose ball, competes for every rebound and does whatever it takes for the team to succeed. All that matter to him is winning.
Sabrina Stewart – Duncan Demons F Her coach said: Sabrina is a sophomore that will play a key role on the offensive end of the floor. She has worked hard this summer improving her game and she will be key in the success of the program.

Duncan Area FFA Student of the Month
Blake Cheatwood – Empire Officially Blake Cheatwood has only been involved with the FFA at Empire
since his eighth grade year. Unofficially though, Blake has been involved with it for much longer. “Even though I’ve only been a member since eighth grade, my dad is an Ag teacher so I’ve been involved in FFA in one way or another my entire life,” Blake said. Blake also said it is because of his father and their close relationship that inspired him to get involved with FFA in the first place. “My dad has been an Ag teacher for almost 40 years now, and when I was a kid I’d always ride in the Ag truck and spend time with kids who were in FFA. It was always fun to go places and watch people compete and I knew I wanted to do that too someday,” Blake said.
As a part of his involvement in FFA Blake shows goats, does judging, gives speeches and has done other things in the past that he can’t do anymore such as the Greenhand Quiz. Blake added that all of those activities have helped him grow as a person. “FFA has helped me learn how to not be afraid and to be myself. Not to worry about what other people think, and to be a leader not a follower,” Blake said. Outside of FFA Blake is also a member of the baseball team at Empire, a member of the Science Club and the Academic Team and plans to also run track this spring. For his dedication to FFA and all of his other activities Blake Cheatwood is the FFA Student of the Month.

Ardmore Academic Athlete of the Month hnson o J n e d y Ka ore Ardm
Just a freshman, Ardmore’s Kayden Johnson has burst onto the scene in a big way this year and left a big impression on everyone within the cross country program. Girls coach Brenda McHatton raved about Kaden’s work ethic and willingness
to continue too get better. Already this season that attitude has paid off with Johnson taking fourth place at the Pre-State meet with a time of 21:14.63. With times like that on her side it’s easy to see why Johnson is a favorite to place highly at the state meet and why her coaches already have been blown away by the freshman. Boys coach Steve Wright meanwhile said Johnson is also a star in the classroom. “Kayden is a 4.0 student or close to it. She focuses just as hard on her school work as she does athletics,” Wright said. For her dedication to being an outstanding student and athlete Kayden Johnson is the Ardmore Academic Athlete of the Month.

OCTOBER 2015
The Plainview Indians football team has had plenty of success in the past and seen plenty of talented dual-threat quarterbacks. This season quarterback Kobe Brewster has cemented his spot among r those players by leading his team to several big wste Kobe Bnrveiew wins this season including an upset win over Plai Douglass on Sept. 25. Brewster also led the Indians to a win over perennial Class 4A power Clinton. Brewster has done plenty of damage to opponents with both his arm and his legs this season and is on pace to account for over 1,500 yards of total offense this year. With several big games left on the slate this year Brewster will definitely have a big job ahead of him but he has proven up to the task and that is why he is the Plainview Blue-Collar Athlete of the Month.
