chapter and in very active in her church.

Alyssa Hawley needs no help finding something to do at Kellyville High School. She participates in varsity cheer, runs cross country and track, and loved playing basketball until she sustained an injury in the final game last year. Hawley is class Treasurer, is President of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes

“Alyssa is an outstanding young lady and campus leader. She always has a smile on her face and has a heart to serve her classmates. Though she is quiet by nature, her classmates respect her and follow her lead. Behind that warming smile she is a fierce competitor. She is diligent in the classroom and is a credit to the Kellyville community and to her tribe,” said Roscoe Migliore, Kellyville FCA Huddle Sponsor.

Being a member of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation has played a major role in her life and is something she is proud to discuss. “As a member of the Creek tribe it has given me more incite to my culture. I love participating in Green Corn at Polecat Ceremonial Grounds and I love the stories about the elders. It is also very interesting to me the different processions in the traditional burial process,” said Hawley. Hawley said her teammates are very important to her because they are another form of family and she loves her family. In the classroom Hawley is focused on making the most of her education and is excited to one day continue her path of learning in college. “My favorite subject in school is math. This year I will be taking algebra 3 and trigonometry. I would like to study premed. My ultimate goal is to become a pediatric neurologist and osteopathic manipulation and massage physician,” said Hawley. “My parents have been a major influence on my life. They’ve always taught me to set high goals and once they are accomplished to set new ones. They’ve also taught me that everything in life is obtainable if you work hard.” Representing the Muscogee (Creek) Nation is something Hawley is proud to do and wants her values to reflect what the people of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation believe. “Representing the Muscogee (Creek) Nation means you have amazing moral, cultural, and family values. To me, that is what it means to be a Creek citizen.”

MATTHEW HARMON - ARKOMA HIGH SCHOOL In football, just like any other sport, it’s the final score that judges the outcome of the game. Yet for Matthew Harmon, a senior at Arkoma High School, the way in which you prepare for life everyday has an even bigger impact in who really wins and who loses.

“It’s all about making the right choices, doing things right,” said Harmon, a three sport standout for the Mustangs. “Whether that’s in a ball game or every day life, the decisions you make or don’t make not only affects you but everyone around you including teammates, family, friends even total strangers.” It’s Harmon’s second nature actions of doing things right with a consistent example that character counts that impresses Arkoma

head football coach, Mark Weatherton.

“Matthew is more than just a good athlete, he’s a champion level person that’s willing to do anything to help make situations

better for everyone,” said Weatherton. “No matter if he’s playing football or in the classroom or going out of his way to spend a moment with the younger kids around Arkoma, Matthew is first to offer words of encouragement and lend a helping hand. He’s a leader by his actions in everything he does.”

In addition to his contributions for the Mustangs football, basketball and baseball teams, Harmon maintains a 4.02 GPA as well as enjoying his involvement in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes along with serving as vice-president of the FCCLA group at his school. The 17-year old senior, who aspires to one day become a lawyer credits the example by actions influence of his parents for providing a light to follow in his daily path.

“Day by day, my mom and dad (Shelly and Shawn), have shown me the value of actions speaking louder than your words,” said Harmon. “Together they’ve shown me and my brothers and sister (Michael, Hunter and Hayden) that there’s no substitute for hard work and for taking responsibility for your every action.”

Many times the glory of making the game’s highlight reel is the only desire for athletes at all levels. Yet, according to Weatherton, the chance to share the glory with his teammates defines the heart of a champion and brings a smile to the face of Harmon.

“We like to create special moments for our seniors,” recalled Weatherton. “During Matthew’s freshman year, he intercepted a pass and was running it back for a touchdown. Instead of getting his own accolades, he decided to step out of bounds at the one yard line just so one of the senior linemen could get his one chance to score on the next play and have his moment in the spot-

light. He’s continuously putting others first.”

Another reward for Harmon for being a hometown hero on the football field is the game day visits to the elementary school.

“On Fridays, we go to the grade school and just spend time with the younger kids,” smiled Harmon. “When they run up to you and call you by name asking for your autograph, it makes me realize the impact of character and that someone is always watching you. Every choice we make has repercussions; everything you do or say makes a difference, one way or the other.” A leader, a student of the game and in the classroom and hard worker are traits credited to the Arkoma senior student. Yet what matters most to Harmon is not the number of receptions or touchdowns scored but the game statistics of life long after playing football is done.

“Most of all, I want my legacy to be that I did the right thing and was always there to lend a helping hand to everyone trying to make every situation better than before.” For Matthew Harmon, what you see is what you get. A champion for life who examples by his actions the importance that Character Counts.

After finishing a preseason workout in the scorching sun, VYPE caught up with Devan Murray of Fort Gibson High School to answer questions for Triple Play. After getting his answers, we posed the same questions to Devan’s twin brother Dylan Murray before posing the questions to the twins mom, Tammy. Which of the two best-matched answers with Devan? Openly admitting it’s hard for people to tell the twin brothers apart, Devan Murray proudly sports the blonde hair so even Mom will always know the difference, Even though he’s younger by 2.5 hours, the Fort Gibson Tigers senior takes pride in his efforts including a 3.7 GPA. After spending several weeks on the sideline due to injury, Devan anxiously awaits the start of the football season where he’ll play cornerback. Devan, along with his brother are members of the FCA huddle. Devan hopes to play football on the college level and wants to play at the University of Tulsa.

With the release of the 2016 Oklahoma Pigskin Preview, VYP CHOICE football team from a series of polls on the website vyp a look and decide for yourself, which team you’d like to coach Bill Huddleston. Let us know your opinions, tweet

QB – Malcolm Rodriguez, Wagoner Bulldogs – A proven champion in wrestling and football, Rodriguez led the Bulldogs to their second straight Class 4A football title last season. The 2017 senior has all the tools to make it three in a row for Wagoner.

RB – Hunter Capehart, Sallisaw Black Diamonds – Plenty of running backs with talent for this position, but give me the production, versatility and heart of the Black Diamond senior. A 1,000yard plus running back, Capehart can get tough yards as well as take it to the house. WR – Nikia Jones, Wagoner Bulldogs – After making “the catch” giving Wagoner a second straight Class 4A championship, Jones’ efforts last year have already earned the Bulldogs 2016 junior Division I recruiting offers. At 6-3, 210, Jones matches speed and sure hands with his ability to go up in a crowd to make the catch.

OL – Chaz Jimerson, Tahlequah Tigers – A state track qualifier in the shot put and discus, Jimerson’s size (6-3, 285) and strength is amplified by his mobility to wreck havoc on the offensive line.

Orlandis Roberson

DL – Michael Rosales, Fort Gibson Tigers – A three-year starter, Rosales has the quickness to beat opposing double teams and use his aggressiveness to control play on the line of scrimmage. LB – Tyler Barnett, Sequoyah Tahlequah Indians – After establishing a school record for tackles last year, Barnett not only passes the eye test at 6-0, 195 but also aces the play test with a high energy motor tuned for making plays against the run or pass. DB – Kamren Curl, Muskogee Roughers – Just as easily could’ve been a pick at wide receiver; Curl has the “knack” for making game changing plays. Curl’s attacking style defense combined with closing speed is the perfect combination for the secondary.

ATH – Ben Klutts, Poteau Pirates – A D-I baseball prospect, Klutts possesses the versatility to be a difference maker. In addition to his quarterback skills, the Poteau senior compliments the nickel coverage in the secondary while changing field position as a punter.

FANS’ CHOICE ALL – THREE RIVERS 2016 PRESEASON FOOTBALL TEAM

PE Three Rivers offered readers the chance to select the FANS pe.com/threerivers that totaled more than 180,000 votes. Take h…the Fans’ Choice or the lineup chosen by Three Rivers editor t him your thoughts @vypesportsguy or @vypeok QB – Chandler Ladd, Fort Gibson Tigers – The FANS favorite enters his second season running the Tigers attack with confidence after completing 110-192 passes for 1,234 yards during his sophomore campaign. Ladd will be a catalyst in order for the Tigers to chase a district title. RB – Landon Moore, Spiro Bulldogs – Another fan favorite, Moore will be the featured back in Spiro’s running game. Capable of getting tough yards after contact, Moore has the quickness in passing routes to create big plays.

WR – William Shirley IV, Okmulgee Bulldogs – A four sport athlete, Shirley claimed a gold medal in the Class 4A 300 hurdles and bronze in the 100 hurdles, Shirley’s athleticism combined with speed is the perfect combination.

OL – Chaz Jimerson, Tahlequah Tigers – The FANS choice is a match with my pick for a spot on this year’s offensive front. Jimerson line play will be a big factor in Tahlequah’s offen-

sive success on the ground as well as throwing the football.

DL – Dakota Adams, Eufaula Ironheads – Eufaula has a long standing tradition of aggressive defensive linemen and Adams will be expected to deliver game changing moments from his defensive end position by making use of strength and agility. LB – Ty Neighbors, Warner Eagles – A two-way starter, Neighbors plays downhill with an attacking style. As the overall top vote getter, the FANS favorite will be a key figure in Warner’s search for the Class A playoffs and the A-8 district title.

DB – Logan Stacy, Morris Eagles – A key figure in the Eagles flight to success in 2016. A two-way starter, Stacy captains the secondary setting the tone with an attacking attitude.

The welcome home package for Okmulgee’s new head coach Carl Lee is the return of seven starters to the offensive unit that is filled with speed and skills as the 2001 OHS grad returns back to the ‘Dog Pound to lead his alma mater back into the playoffs. Multi-sport standout William Shirley along with Trivion Skinner and Eric Dan will be a three-headed monster in Okmulgee’s offensive game plan as freshman quarterback Jake Barrett settles into the signal calling duties. The ‘Dogs running game will be “by committee” to showcase the talents of Jordan Lewis along with Greg Jones and Tavon Henderson. The big question will be who will join Corey Brinkley in the offensive front to master blocking assignments in the Bulldogs multi-set formations. Seven is Lee’s lucky number with the return of seven starters to the defensive lineup where the Bulldogs have closing speed in multiple positions. Shirley and Dan return at cornerback along with the energy of Jaden Skinner while Trivion Skinner brings an attacking style play at safety with Jones and Marquise Coleman adding to the playmaking abilities. Trelon McCall and Davion Nelson will control the edge at defensive end while

OKMULGEE BULLDOGS

The expectation of the Golden Demons for 2015 is BELIEVE and with the talent and experience returning coach Lee Blankenship’s squad is focused on a return to the Class 3A playoffs. Tylar Murry will direct the up-tempo attack as a dual threat quarterback. Murry, tabbed by Blankenship as the motivational leader, produced 2,561 total offense and 24 scores last year including 1,671 yards passing. Beggs version of “thunder and lightning” running backs C.J. McCall and Jared Sutter, who started every game last year as a freshman, return to the backfield confident of big play potential running behind their big offensive linemen including a trio of seniors Kobe Daniels, Dylan Corum and Chris Waltman, who is drawing interest of major college recruiters. Led by the influence of a trio of three starters, the Golden Demons defense welcomes the return of six starters to the Golden Demons 4-2-5 formation that attacks with pursuit on every snap. Ira Blackbear, who totaled 72 tackles last season joins Levi Bouse to patrol the secondary. Attacking with

Brinkley Ishmael anchors the noseguard position. Alix Griffon will be the leader of the pack at linebacker along with Lewis and Chris Wallace.

BEGGS DEMONS

Eagles head coach Jerry Hanlin believes that playing the best competition makes your team better. After a schedule that included eight playoff teams in 2015, the returning lettermen on this year’s Morris football team are ready to take their flight to a higher level. Experience begins at quarterback where Gunner Clevenger enters his second season managing the game while Logan Stacy returns his talents at running back and will be joined by Justin Long while Billy Gibbens provides power at H-back. The Air-Eagles will rely upon the pass catching talents of Dawson Pope, Cody Smith and Tyler Arrington. Muscled up experience returns on the line of scrimmage anchored by a trio of seniors including Devin Webster, Stetson May and Osea McCart. Disciplined with physical and reckless abandon is the defensive style of the Eagles 4-3 formation where eight starters return. Gibbens and Pope will continue to create collisions from their defensive ends while a trio of linebackers Jaxon Longan, Smith and Dillon Mattingly bring plenty of energy as well as cover side to side. Stacy will be the Eagles’ captain in the secondary.

HENRYETTA KNIGHTS

After reaching the Class 2A playoffs last season, the Henryetta Knights enter the 2016 campaign with an understanding of what’s needed for success. With the leadership and skills of a senior laden lineup, coach Darin Johnson’s squad is preparing for the challenge as the Knights spread offense has plenty of beef to open running lanes and protection for the passing game with Brice Sanford, Rhett Williams and Kyle Tarkington leading the way. Avery Moore will be the workhorse in the running game as well as creating highlight reel results on passing routess. Last year, Moore averaged 167.8 all-purpose yards per game including 1,247 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns for the season. Darious Tiger moves to quarterback to give coach Johnson options of passing and running the football. The Knights also welcome back wide receiver Brannon Murphy who made 29 catches last year and turned quick routes into game changing moments. The Knights 3-3-5 scheme includes five starters that left their mark on the defensive results last season including a trio of senior linebackers. Sanford, Tarkington and Tanner

Dodge each averaged more than five tackles per contest and will be challenged to bring an aggressive impact this season. Murphy, who totaled three interceptions last year, returns to the secondary along with Moore and Tiger, who grabbed six interceptions. “We expects great things from this senior class leadership to take our team to success,” said Johnson, who enters his fourth season as head coach.

OKEMAH PANTHERS

On the heels of reaching the Class 2A playoffs last year, the Panthers have been focusing for something more in 2016 as nine starters return to the offensive unit including four-year starter Tack Murray, who enters his final campaign wearing the black and gold with more than 3,000 career yards rushing as the workhorse for coach Joe Turner’s wing-T formation. Tate Peters is another threat to the running game along with an elusive Corey Ramsey while Jacob Rogers will manage the game at quarterback. Three-year starter Connor Campbell returns experience and playmaking thrills at wingback as well a two-year starter C.D. Harjo at tight end while DeAngelo Gibson adds speed and big play potential at split end. The prowess of the Panthers offense will again be the strength and mobility of the offensive line anchored by Brayden Morris, Tanner Choate, Isaiah Schmidlkofer and Jaden Ferry. Coach Turner was quick to the point describing the defensive talents of this year’s squad as aggressive that will continue to play out of the 4-4 alignment with seven returning

starters. Attacking from the edge will be Peters and threeyear starter Kody Bradford while Tyler Acosta will anchor the inside at noseguard lining up next to Ferry and Ethan Williams at tackle. Okemah’s linebacker foursome play hard nose football with Murray, Morris, Choate and Campbell attacking on every snap. Secondary coverage is sound with Rogers, Colton Roberts and Gibson taking care of business.

DEWAR DRAGONS

Winning and Dewar football have been a frequent combination and despite the graduation of 10 seniors from last season’s 11-2 campaign, the Dragons are confident they can continue to be a force among Class B football. Taber Hicks steps into the starting lineup at tailback as the fire in the Dragons offense while Dewar will have a new quarterback for the first time in four seasons as Rhett Whitlow will be calling signals. Adding to the expectations to score will be tight ends Trisdon Brownfield and Braxton Lloyd along with the “tough guy” Boogie Brown at fullback. With brute strength and mobility, Bryton Edmundson and Zach Stephens will anchor the front line. The muscle of the Dragons defense again revolves around Brownfield, a three-year starter at linebacker along with Brown. Controlling play on the line of scrimmage will be the mission of Edmundson, Lloyd and Kelby Carter, who coach Josh Been described as a block of granite that

delivers bone-jarring tackles while Hicks patrols the secondary. “Our kids have a chip on their shoulder and will continue to do what we do here at Dewar,” said Been. AUGUST 2016

As Gary Willis takes the reigns as head coach, optimism for a continued high-octane offense is fueled by the speed of Terron Moses and athleticism of quarterback Rayne Cloud. While missing the final two contests of the season due to injury, “Tuk” raced to the end zone 36 times totaling 1,922 yards. With a strong passing arm and the agility to run, Cloud generated 1,813 yards total offense including 1,159 yards passing and 13 touchdowns without a single interception. Dual threat talents of Bodhi Vann adds another threat to the spread attack plus possession type receptions from Brett McFarland, Randy Adair and Levi Ragsdale. Controlling the line of scrimmage rests upon the shoulders of four-year starter Shelton Skaggs along with veteran Tyrus Wells, Bobby Risley, Cade Cato and Robbie Reasons. The flipside of the Wolverines gold coin hopes is the consistency of defensive physical play that last season limited opponents to just 12 points per game. Leading the rally will be River Simon who returns at linebacker after totaling 127 tackles and six fumble recoveries during his freshman campaign joined by Cloud and Chris Logan. Skaggs, who charted 56 tackles last season and Reasons will join noseguard Graylen Fletcher on the line of scrimmage playing downhill with pressure alongside defensive ends Cato and Levi Ragsdale. Vann brings physical speed to the defensive backfield where he recorded 50 tackles a year ago to secure the secondary blanket effort along with Adair, Moses, McFarland and Luke Palmer.

It will be the third straight season the teams have met in the season opener. Catoosa won last year’s matchup 17-7.

“Black Diamonds Football – Tradition Abounds” There’s no denying the fact the most popular topic of discussion in Sallisaw is what’s going on with Black Diamonds football. Who remembers the final score of the state championship victories in 1980 and 1981? The first gold ball was a 33-22 win over Lindsay and the back-to-back crown was a 21-14 win over Newcastle. Players and coaches, past and present, as well as every decade of alumni wear their pride for lifetime when it comes to cheering for the Black and Orange. So are the emotions when exploring the subject…what players should be named to the All-Time Black Diamonds football team. There’s no shortage of probable candidates as well as numerous athletes that could be chosen first team at multiple positions including players that once wore the black and orange that continued to prove their talents on the college level winning national championships before playing on Sundays in the National Football League. When the Pirates ship returned to port following a 12-1 journey that reached the Class 4A semifinals, head coach Forrest Mazey began mapping out the travels for this year’s squad that will include an offense returning only three starters from a unit that averaged 44 points per game. Among the names topping the captain’s list is third year starting quarterback Ben Klutts (6-3,190, Sr.), a VYPE Top 100 selection who has totaled 2,874 yards passing for 30 touchdowns in his career including a 65% completion rate. “Ben’s a competitor with a will to win,” notes Mazey. “His ability to make split-second decisions create positive things for us. Ben’s arm strength and precision passing skills let us go deep or short and quick with consistent results.” Primary targets for Klutts this season will be Caleb Skelton (5-11, 185, So.), Dawson Perry (5-10, 155, Sr.), Race Williams (5-8, 140, Jr.) along with the added abilities of H-back Gunnar Thompson (6-3, 192, So.) to keep Poteau’s passing game reaching its potential. Ready to write his own legacy at running back is Kale Barcheers (5-9, 201, Jr.), the younger brother of Poteau’s all-time leading rusher Roger Barcheers. Joining Kale in this year’s ground game will be Jeremy Gutierrez (5-11, 245, Sr.). Led by their front line anchor Matthew Alvarado (6-, 320, Jr.) the Pirates offensive front is once again ticketed to remain big, strong and physical including the efforts of Jarod Vineyard (6-3, 275, Jr.), Wyatt Darby (5-11, 267, Jr.) and Joshua Smith (6-3, 250, So.) to control action on the line of scrimmage. The defensive galleys on the Pirates ship are filled with new faces as Poteau reloads its defensive prowess. Daylon Duncan (5-10, 180, Jr.) who

A new chapter of Bulldogs football history begins in 2016 with the reclassification move to Class 2A competition as head coach Chris Bunch enters his 26th season on the sidelines at Spiro. Among the nine starters returning, tailback Landon Moore (5-10, 170, Sr.) will be the mainstay in the spread offense that will be directed by sophomore quarterback Deontei Braggs (6-0, 170, So.). Brent Stout (6-3, 190, Sr.) will be another threat to opposing defenses from his positions at tight end of wide receiver. “Altogether Landon, Brent and Deontei will give us speed we need at the skill positions to generate more chances to put points on the scoreboard,” said Bunch. Anchoring the efforts to control the line of scrimmage, the Bulldogs will rely upon the size, strength and mobility of senior linemen Nathan Lovejoy (510, 325, Sr.) and Trey Rodgers (6-5, 270, Sr.). “Nathan and Trey are veterans of competition. Their experience in the trenches helps every part of our offensive game plans,” said Bunch. Regardless of the change in classes, Bunch is well aware of the competition level within the Bulldogs opponents in 2A-6 that will require Spiro to deliver an aggressive style of defensive play. Seven start-

recorded 55 tackles and three interceptions, will once again attack from the outside linebacker position along with Nate Ullmer (5-8, 170, So.) Brandon Turrentine (5-10, 200, Sr.) or Jeremy Gutierrez. Kale Barcheers, who totaled 22 stops a year ago joins Juan Martinez (5-10, 210, Jr.) at defensive end with Mazey tabbing Joshua Smith and Seth Ford (5-10, 180, So.) to control the defensive line battle at tackle positions. Protecting the Pirates secondary will be the duties assigned to Preston Duncan (6-1, 150, Jr.) who returns from a broken collarbone last year along with Caleb Skelton, Race Williams and Jamison Shackleford (5-9, 140, Jr.). “We’ll have new names in a variety of positions,” admits Mazey, “but our goals remain the same as we develop consistency on both sides of the line in order to get all the pieces to the puzzle in the right spot and make the plays that result in wins on Friday night.”

ers return to the gridiron this fall with defensive tackles Hunter Clouse (5-10, 220, Jr.) and Josh Cole (5-11, 225, Sr.) assigned to control action on the line of scrimmage. The Bulldogs secondary unit returns four veterans including D’Karre Lynch (5-, 165, Sr.) who totaled 36 tackles last year along with Brevon Harper (5-8, 280 Jr.), Landon Moore and Deontei Braggs expected to be the ringleaders in Spiro’s 4-2-5 alignment. “We’ll find the right fit for the linebacker positions to solidify our defense,” notes Bunch. “With the combination of experience on both sides of the ball, we expect to have the opportunity to win on Friday night.” AUGUST 2016

KEOTA LIONS COACH: ERIC HENRY ENROLLMENT: 121 LAST 5 YEARS: 2011 - 4-6 2012 - 9-3 2013 - 9-3 2014 - 10-2 2015 - 12-1

After reaching the Class B championship finals last season, the Lions believe that the only way to go in 2016 is up as head coach Eric Henry enters his 7th season. Garren Drummonds (5-11, 170, Sr.) is expected to be the workhorse for the Lions running game. The hard-hitting running back totaled more than 1,000 yards rushing in the Lions offense that produced an average of 56 points per contest while reaching the Class B state finals. Adding to the power style running game will be fullback Trevor Bryant (5-11, 215, Sr.) and Knute Dumas (6-2, 190, Sr.) who will move to quarterback to direct the Lions attack. Henry is developing depth at quarterback with the contributions of Brandon Geer (6-0, 165, So.) plus the pass-catching talents of Chaz Williams (5-10, 160, So.) at wide receiver. The foundation of Keota’s high scoring offense will again be the force of play in the offensive line where Kevin McKensie (6-3, 250, Sr.) and Kade Johnson (6-5, 290, Jr.) add size and mobility to the blocking scheme. The Lions defensive growl will be strong again after last season limiting opponents to just 16 points per contest and creating turnovers with a physical style of play. “Our defense swarms to the football with an aggressive nature of gang tackling,” said Henry. Garren Drummonds, Knute Dumas and Trevor Bryant give Keota quickness plus physical talent again at linebacker while Kade Johnson and Kevin McKenzie will control action on the line of scrimmage. Another newcomer to the lineup Keelyn Parker (5-10, 180, Fr.) is expected to bring added ability to control play on the line of scrimmage at defensive end. “The success of the last couple of years has increased the desire of our players to achieve their best,” said Henry. “Several of our heroes last year are back to give us a nucleus to build upon and continue winning football games every week. COACH: RICK LANG ENROLLMENT: 203 Last 5 Years: 2011 - 4-5 2012 - 5-6 2013 - 3-7 2014 - 3-7 2015 - 2-8

The more things change the more things stay the same as the Indians look to benefit from the move back to Class A football with a lineup filled with familiar faces as nine starters return to both sides of the football. Kyler Ree (6-4, 190, Sr.) enters his fourth season as the starting quarterback to give coach Rick Lang’s a dual threat in their Pistol-Spread offense. Ree passed for 1,575 yards and 22 touchdowns last season while rushing for 735 yards. Primary targets for Ree will again include Jimmy Carlton (6-3, 180, Sr.) and Zach Glory (5-11, 160, Sr.). “Kyler can thread the needle on quick routes or throw deep,” said Lang. “Jimmy is our go-to-guy that will make the catch in the crowd and Zach has the quickness to get open and turn a short route into a big play. A run-pass catching dual threat includes slotback Jason McClure (6-0, 190, Sr.) while the two-headed monster tandem of Daniel Windborn (5-11, 160, Jr.) and Nathan Sharp (511, 175, So.) will rotate at tailback. The development of the offensive front will be a key to the Indians’ production anchored by two-year starter Braxten Johnson (6-1, 180, Jr.) along with Caleb Masterson (6-3, 240, So.), Aaron Hancock (6-2, 195, So.), Alex Moore (6-0, 215, Jr.) and Parker Killion (6-3, 190, So.) The Indians 4-3 defensive alignment rotates around the physical talents of Jason McClure, who led the team at tackles a year ago at middle linebacker. The crashing style play of Jimmy Carlton and Cole Wofford (6-2, 195, So.) at defensive end will corral opponents on the edge while Greg Mendez (5-10, 180, So.) has the talents to roam sideline to sideline with aggression from the outside linebacker spot. Two-year starter Ryan Richardson will once again patrol the secondary at strong safety along with Kyler Ree and Zach Glory. “Anytime you have the playing time experience returning like we do creates high expectations,” said Lang. “After six years battling in Class 2A,

After winning their final four games of the season to make the playoffs in 2015, the Razorbacks will look to replace 12 seniors and the experience that comes with them. Three-year starter Tristan Thompson (6-1, 190, Sr.) will move from wide receiver to battle Sydney Fout (6-1, 180, Jr.) for the quarterbacking job. Rowdy Downs (5-11, 180, So.) returns having suffered a broken collarbone that sidelined him a good part of last season. He’s slotted for the running back spot although if Fout loses the quarterback battle he may end up carrying the mail for the Razorbacks. Panama will be blessed to have three starters return in the offensive line in center Josh Morrison (5-1, 190, Sr.), guard Jacob Mantooth (5-1, 203, Jr.), and tackle Collin Simkins (5-7, 214, So.). The Razorbacks will also have some added depth in the line as well with Ty Keener (5-11, 210, Jr.). The receiving corps will include Dakota Eaves (6-0, 170, Jr.) at wide receiver and Dawson Reistine (5-11, 180, Jr) at tight end. Panama will have just four starters back on the defensive side this year including a solid nucleus at linebacker that includes Josh Morrison, Jacob Mantooth and Chance Timms (5-1, 170, So.). Tristan Thompson will return to the secondary while up front the Razorbacks will look for good things from Cole Linne (5-8, 194, Jr.) at defensive tackle. How quickly this group is able to rise to the occasion against opposing offenses will be a big key to how successful the Razorbacks can be in 2016. Some reshuffling in District 2A-6 this year will result in some new district opponents for Panama. Gone are Vian, Pocola, and Liberty and replacing them are Valliant, Hugo and Spiro. With only a five game district slate, the Razorbacks could have the advantage of an opponent day week 10 to prepare for the opening of the Class 2A playoffs. Coach: David Long Enrollment: 326 Last 5 Years: 2015 - 3-7 2014 - 2-8 2013 - 2-7 2012 - 5-5 2011 - 4-6

A new year brings a new look to the Wolves of Heavener. With the loss of 18 seniors and a new system in place, many new names will become fan favorites in 2016 including head coach David Long who enters following the mid-summer resignation of Chris Endress. The flexbone will be the new offensive set for the Wolves and Connor Place (5-6, 155, Jr.) will move from running back to become the signal caller for Heavener. Last season Place showed his running ability with nearly 900 yards running and over 1100 allpurpose yards. The rest of the offense will need to be a quick study without a lot of varsity experience. Jacob Hill (6-0, 175, Jr.) did see some action last year and will be expected to carry a big load at running back and Jordan Terry (6-1, 205, Jr.) will clear the way at the full back spot. Greyson Kennerson (6-1, 250, Jr.) will give some size along the line while Tyler Eagle (6-2, 210, Sr.) will man the tight end position. The experience level is even more critical on the defensive side with just three starters back for the Wolves. Unlike the offense, the defense will stick with the 4-2-5 alignment so a new learning curve won’t be needed on that side of the ball. Terry returns at a linebacker position for the Wolves while Hill is back at safety and Eagle will line back up at defensive end. Gunner Sanders (6-0, 180, Jr.) will join Terry at linebacker while Manny Bustillos (5-8, 200, Sr.) will be with Eagle in the trenches along with Cameron Ballentine (6-1, 190, So.). STIGLER PANTHERS

The Panthers enter 2016 seeking to complete unfinished business that includes a 3A-8 district championship that slipped through their grasps a year ago. Nine starters return to the gridiron including a massive front line that tips the scales at an average of 265 pounds per man. A pair of four-year starters Steven Mosley (5-11, 215, Sr.) and Justin Geralds (6-1, 260, Sr.) will anchor the efforts in the trenches along with Triston Mobley (5-11, 260, Last 5 Years: Sr.), Draven Johnson (6-4, 305, Jr.) 2015 - 7-4 and Caleb Smith (6-0, 290, Jr.). 2014 - 2-8 2013 - 10-3 “This is the most talented offen2012 - 10-3 sive line I’ve coached,” said head 2011- 10-2 coach Chris Risenhoover. “Steven and Justin have started every game since they were freshmen. The who group is experienced, athletic and mobile plus has the swagger you want upfront.” T.J. Spearman (6-0, 175, Sr.) provides a dual-threat option at quarterback after passing for 963 yards and running for 450 yards last season. Garret Brooks (5-8, 155, Jr.) steps into the starting spot at running back where he averaged 7.2 yards per carry in 2015 along with Andrew Moore (6-0, 205, Sr.) who Risenhoover will rely upon for another season of tough yards following Moore’s 8.1 yards per carry last year. The “1-back spread” attack includes an air-raid assault paced by proven receivers Dawson Barger (5-11, 170, Sr.) who made 30 catches last season averaging 17.2 yards per catch. Adding to the yards after catch receiving corps will be Garon Mayhall (5-11, 160, Jr.), Nathaniel Shaffer (6-4, 170, Jr.), Kelby Self (6-4, 225, Jr.) along with H-back Bryce Turrentine (5-9, 165, Schedule: Aug. 26 – at Westville Sept. 2 – vs. Hartshorne Sept. 9 – at Sallisaw Sept. 16 – at Spiro Sept. 23 – vs. Haskell Sept. 30 – at Roland Oct. 7 – vs. Idabel Oct. 14 – OPEN Oct. 20 – vs. Eufaula Oct. 28 – vs. Heavener Nov. 4 – at Muldrow

Jr.) who brings strength and quickness to the position. The aggressiveness of the Panthers defensive unit created 26 turnovers last season and with five returning starters plus a cast of eager athletes ready to make a difference, Risenhoover expects even better results in 2016. The front line trio will include a rotation of players at noseguard with Tristan Mobley and Draven Johnson providing size and strength while Andrew Moore, Steven Mosley and Kelby Self defend the edge at end. The Panthers linebackers play downhill with an attitude as Colton Sweeden (6-1, 190, Jr.), Tommy Huggins (5-10, 185, Jr.) and Dalton Main (5-8, 165, Sr.) pair up inside while Lake McClary (6-0, 195, Jr.) and Carson Gray (5-8, 165, So.) patrol the outside positions. Experience and talent abound in the secondary as after making 40 tackles last season Dawson Barger enters a third season in the defensive backfield along with Bryce Turrentine, who charted 45 tackles and Garon Mayhall, who totaled 53 stops join forces with Payton Henson (6-0, 155, Jr.), Dawson Barger and Ryan Bryant (6-1, 165. Sr.). With Draven Johnson handling punting chores where he averaged 37.1 yards per kick last season, the Panthers expect to gain field advantage as well. “We’ve got the opportunity to have a good football team,” said Risenhoover. “Experience and playmaking talent will give us the pieces to work the puzzle. Now we have to put it together.

STILWELL INDIANS

Anticipation fueled by hard work is the approach of the Indians as the 2016 season gets started. Entering his third season at the helm, head coach J.T. Cobble looks the experience of six returning starters on the offensive lineup for points on the scoreboard. Three-sport athlete Jordan Wiggins (5-11, 150, Jr.) returns at quarterback with a season of experience to match his decision-making talents operating Stilwell’s multi-I formation game plan. Two key figures in the running game will be Sam Phillips (5-10, 170, Jr.) and Josh Roberts (5-10, 170, Jr.). As the Indians go no-huddle, Cobble will turn to Billy McNac (6-0, 155, Jr.) and Joe Risley (6-2, 140, Jr.) at wide receiver along with added playmaking results from slotback Tyson Fourkiller (5-10, 140,So.). The offensive expectations will also depend upon the contributions from a young but aggressive offensive line including a trio of sophomores Logan Stevens (6-3, 240, So.), Hunter Kirkland (6-0, 200, So.) and Tommy Jack Anderson (6-1, 225, So.) ready to due battle in the trench along with Drake Barbee (6-0, 165, Jr.) and Luke Inman (6-1, 170, Sr.). The game plan for Stilwell’s defense isn’t complicated as the approach from the 4-2-5 scheme will be to stop the opponent by getting 11 men to football in a blink of an eye. The defensive front is a family affair as Matt

After two years of one-and-done in the playoffs, the Yellowjackets are looking to take it to the next level in 2016. Seven players are back for the Westville offense including three-year starter Blane Burns (6-1, 190, Sr.) at quarterback who passed for just over 1000 yards and 14 touchdowns in 2015. Also fanning the flames of enthusiasm for the Yellowjackets is the return of the entire offensive line led by Josh Wilkie (5-9, 250, Sr.) and Cameron Williams (60, 245, Sr.). Don Pruitt (5-10, 240, Sr.) is also back and will be expected to handle more of the ball-carrying responsibility this year. Helping him out will be Dagan Hembree (5-7, 155, Jr.) who saw some varsity action last year while Caden Unger (5-11, 165, Sr.) will be the go-to guy in the Westville passing game. “We should have a strong running game and continue to bring the passing game along,” said Kapella. “With a threeyear starter at quarterback and a pair of solid running backs plus an experienced line, we hope to be as productive as last year despite the loss of several seniors.” The defensive side of the ball will be the big test for Westville where they will be young and switching from a 3-4 to a 4-2 defense this season. The defensive front will have most of the experience back for the Yellowjackets with Kameron Watson (5-9, 265, Sr.) moving from offense to defensive tackle and Kevin Woods (6-0, 175. Jr.) stationed at end. Will Atchison (5-7, 180, Sr.) returns at linebacker and will be joined by Austin Brown (5-9, 160, Sr.). Unger

Catron (6-0, 150, Sr.) and Eric Catron (6-1, 160, Sr.) protect the edge at defensive end while Austin Vaughn (6-2, 300, Sr.) and Kile Hollan (6-3 250, Jr.) will shut things down inside. Nate Chucalate (5-10, 150, Jr.) and Luke Inman will fly to the football with passion from the linebacker positions while the Indians expect to find insurance from the secondary unit including safeties Billy McNac and Kaje Ross (5-10, 140, Jr.) while Joe Risley and and Keaton Asbill (6-0, 150, So.) defend from their cornerback positions. “It’s still a work in progress and our kids are determined to make their efforts successful,” said Cobble. “Rome wasn’t built in a day and our approach is to get better than we were the day before and let the results prove that on Friday night.”

Caden Unger – Eddy Holguin – Don Pruitt returns to the strong safety position and Eddie Holguin (5-8, 145, Sr.) takes on the free safety spot. “I think this season will be a great test for our players and staff,’ said Kapella. “We lost a ton of production on both sides of the ball but we have a lot of players back who saw varsity action. We have 19 seniors to provide leadership for our youngsters, particularly on defense where we have some big shoes to fill.”

Is the third time the charm? As the Roughers’ head coach Rafe Watkins enters his third season, expectations are growing that 2016 will mark the return to the postseason for Muskogee. Only a blocked PAT separated the Roughers reaching the 6A-II playoffs leaving the 2016 lineup of playmakers hungry to be in the chase of the gold ball for the first time since 2010. “There’s no reason why we shouldn’t make the playoffs, every year,” Watkins said with conviction. “Last year proved to our kids that the margin of difference is as small as one play. It’s made our off-season training even more focused to doing the little things that will result in winning on Friday night.”

One advantage for Muskogee will be the level of playmakers on both sides of the ball including VYPE Top 100 selection Kamren Curl (6-2, 180, Sr.) who already has received multiple Division I college offers including Texas Tech, Houston, Washington State, Illinois, Memphis and Tulsa. As a receiver, Curl totaled 56 catches for 700 yards and 8 TDs while his counterpart, Jamari Davis (5-9, 165, Sr.) led Class 6A receiving with 41 catches for 972 yards and 10 TDs. “Kam and Booty (Davis) give us plenty of options. They both have speed plus sure hands and can create big yards out of short routes,” said Watkins.

D.J. Mayes (5-9, 160, Jr.), Devon Hillmon (5-10, 165, Jr.) and Braylen Duncan (6-1, 165, Jr.) bolster the receiving packages for quarterback Jacob Medrano (5-10, 165, Jr.) who brings playing time experience to the position. Quentevin Cherry (6-4, 175, So.) gives Muskogee added depth.

The Roughers’ mentor remains determined to establish a consistent running game that appears solid with the return of Molijah Gilbert (5-10, 190, Sr.) who gained 864 yard and scores 11 TDs last season. Jordan Warren (511, 195, Sr.) and Christian Hillmon (5-9, 180, Jr.) provide more choices for the Roughers. The nuts and bolts to the offensive success requires Muskogee’s offensive front to be effective. Something Muskogee coaches expect to become a plus by taking advantage of size plus understanding assignments. Keondre Davis (6-6, 290, Sr.) and Christian Maier (6-4, 270, Sr.) are two big reasons why the Roughers look to push people around in the trenches. Also reasons for Watkins to smile is the play of Andy O’Dell (6-0, 215, Sr.), Seth Garland (6-0, 230, Sr.), Armon Crockett (6-2, 225, Sr.) along with Sammy Webster (6-2, 320, So.) and Parker Hall (6-4, 205, Jr.). Muskogee values the belief that defense wins championships and will look to the playmaking talents of

seven starters to be difference makers in 2016.

Traevon Hughes (5-9, 165, Sr.), who grabbed 7 interceptions while making 48 tackles last season along with Kamren Curl, who totaled 89 tackles and 3 interceptions return to spearhead the secondary unit along with J’mari Davis, John Smith (6-0, 170 Jr.) and D.J. Mayes that combine to close to football with quickness and force. The Roughers ability to control the line of scrimmage has coaches confident entering the season. Defensive ends Michael Edwards (6-2, 235, Jr.) who totaled 49 stops and Armon Crockett will seal the edge while Keondre Davis, Christian Maier will play strong and physical inside along with noseguards Zac Ferguson (6-0, 235, Sr.) and Michael Buckhanan (5-11, 275, Jr.). Aggressive is the best description of linebacker play including Darius Lewis (5-11, 190, Sr.) who charted 60 tackles last season, Jordan Warren and Nathan Coffman (5-11, 170, Jr.) on the outside while Carrington Ashley (5-11, 225, Jr.) mans the middle position.

“We learned the hard way the importance of finishing games,” said Watkins recalling Muskogee held the lead in the fourth quarter in five of its seven losses. “Our kids know that becoming champions isn’t easy and that it requires hard work every day on every play.”

The Roughers schedule will test the character of the squad as Muskogee will play three of its first four games on the road.

Quick Hits: The Hornets move into the same district with rival Fort Gibson this fall. Hilldale tripped the Tigers 27-7 in 2015. The teams have met in 14 consecutive seasons with the Battle for the Rock rivalry split down the middle at seven a piece.

Hilldale’s win total improved by eight from 2014 to 2015. Their undefeated season came to an end at the hands of back-to-back 3A champion Heritage Hall. Both teams move up in classification from a year ago. Head coach Chad Kirkhart took over in 2010 and has compiled a stellar mark of 53-16, including the schools first ever undefeated regular season last year. The current day football team in Muskogee with a tradition of reaching the postseason playoffs is the Hornets of Hilldale. On the heels of a school’s best 12-1 campaign, the Hornets will vault back into Class 4A with a guarded optimism of reaching the playoff party again. Chad Kirkhart’s offense welcomes five starters back to the 2016 lineup including VYPE Top 100 selection Grant Sikes (6-4, 185, Sr.) at wide receiver. The multi-sport athlete including state qualifier in golf, Sikes has totaled 75 receptions for 1,229 yards and 20 touchdowns. Adding to the Hornets big play receiving talents will be Wyatt Wolfe (5-11, 195, Sr.) and Alex Puckett (6-1, 195, Jr.) who averaged 18.3 yards per catch last year. The question is which of three quarterbacks will win the starting job when the season begins as Kort Morgan (5-10, 197, Sr.) Jaron Nail (6-3, 196, Jr.) and Tyler Goad (5-11, 145, So.) continue to earn the starter’s role. “It’s a healthy situation for us at quarterback and a decision that may not be determined until we get through the preseason scrimmages,” said Kirkhart. Hilldale’s running game will have plenty of potential for continued success as Mikey Winston (5-9, 165, Jr.) returns after gaining 1,091 yards and scoring 11 times as a sophomore along with Devin Hembry (6-0, 165, So.) and Wyatt Wolfe. The Hornets will have plenty of strength and mobility in the offensive line anchored by Xavier Milton (6-0, 265, Sr.) and Kaleb Butler (6-5, 300, So.) along with Levi East (6-0, 292, Sr.), Jack Pevehouse (5-10, 282, Sr.) and Lane Ward (5-11, 269, Jr.). Depth in the front line will include Josh Kramer (6-2, 205, Jr.) and Austin Patterson (5-11, 215. Sr.). The sting of the Hornets defensive unit brings high expectations in 2016 with the returning experience of six starters from last year’s swarm style of play that generated 32 turnovers and recorded 47 sacks from their 3-4 alignment. The fearsome threesome upfront includes the defensive end talents of William Dominguez (6-1, 200, Sr.) whose 106 tackles included 28 stops for loss and

Hunter Reheard (6-1, 205, Jr.) who grabbed 61 tackles including 4 sacks last season that will get help from Josh Kramer. Defensive coaches will use a rotation of strength and mobility at noseguard including Xavier Milton, Kaleb Butler and Jack Pevehouse. Inside and out the quartet of linebackers will boast the play of Wyatt Wolfe, who totaled 21 tackles for minus yardage amidst his total of 102 stops along with Trae Davison (6-2, 200, Sr.) who collected 94 tackles from the edge. The inside linebacker tandem will include Brock Owensby (6-0, 210, Jr.) along with Kobe Kuykendall (5-8, 165, Sr.) and Bryce Barrett (5-11, 165, So.) “Our front seven may be as good as we’ve had in a long time,” notes Kirkhart. “They play aggression and confidence and get to the football in a hurry.” The secondary group will look for playmaker highlights from its lone returning veteran Alex Puckett along with Michael Hornback (5-9, 165, Sr.), Tyler Goad (5-10, 155, So.) and Tre Mitchell (5-11, 160, Jr.). Hilldale moves back into Class 4A where Kirkhart looks to the competitive depth of the district as the Hornets challenge. “The experience on both side of the football will benefit us in the transition,” said Kirkhart, “where top to bottom in Class 4A every team is capable of winning. Our kids know what it takes to win on Friday night so now we have to go back to work.”

The growl being heard amidst the Tigers camp is the confidence and playmaking abilities of coach Greg Whiteley’s second year lineup that returns seven starters from a year ago. Fort Gibson’s power running game will showcase the skills of Justin Cates (6-0, 205, Sr.), who led the Tigers’ power attack from his fullback position along with Jesse Sanchez (5-7, 155, Sr.), who gained 634 yards and scored eight times. Additional options at the top of the I-formation will be Carter Lawson (510, 165, Jr.) and Sammy Sanchez (6-1, 215 Jr.) while Justin Garrett (5-11, 205, Jr.) brings additional power at fullback. “Our philosophy is that we are going to run the football,” notes Whiteley, “and by having four players to rotate is keeps energy at a high level.” Chandler Ladd (6-2, 190, Jr.) will again be engineering the offensive results after completing 110-192 passing attempts for 1,234 yards including nine touchdowns. Dylan Murray (6-1, 190, Sr.) will be one of the Tigers “go-to-guy” at receivers after catching 37 passes for 687 yards and scoring eight times. Another threat to stretch the field will be Rusty Rudd (6-2, 170, Jr.), who dashed past would be tacklers for two kickoff return touchdowns in addition to totaling 340 yards receiving. Depth is evident at the position with Hunter McCroskey (5-9, 160, Sr.), along with Cade Cummings (5-11, 170, Jr.) and the return of Devan Murray (6-1, 185, Jr.) who comes back to action after a sophomore season filled with injuries. The Tigers will get added blocking on the edge and pass catching talents with Caden Abbott (6-2, 180, Jr.) at tight end. The Tigers appear ready to return to a dominating offensive front line to open lanes for the running game and provide reliable pass protection as four starters are back including left tackle Michael Rosales (5-11, 250, Sr.), Evan Michael (6-1, 235, Jr.), Josh Griffin (6-4, 270, Sr.) and Jarred Smith (6-0, 205, Jr.) with added help coming from Tyler McFarland (5-11,

skill players on offense where the Riders return just four starters. The second will be adjusting to a new schedule as Hulbert drops from 2A to Class A this season. On the personnel front, Hulbert does return 1,000 yard rusher Jacob Bruce, a nice accomplishment for a freshman. In the offensive line Harris welcomes back Dillon Stanley who started every game in the trenches for the Riders last year. They’ll also be some size in that O-line with sophomore Wyatt Keener and Gabe Scott, who

will block and grab passes from the tight end spot. The Riders will also look for contributions from Jeremy Beeler and Jon McGowan, both of whom Harris describes as good versatile athletes. Harris describes his defensive unit as aggressive and athletic with good speed. Scott, who earned 97 tackles

220, Jr.) and Caleb Farmer (5-11, 200, Jr.). #Flyin’ Tigers may best describe the defensive attack that Fort Gibson will use to shutdown opposing offenses bolstered by the talents and experiences of nine starters. The 3-4 defensive scheme has plenty of muscle on the line of scrimmage with Michael Rosales returning to noseguard. The three-year starter consistently draws double team attention yet still totaled 37 tackles last season and will be joined by Hunter Lawson (5-11, 240, So.) while Vaughn Owens (5-11, 245, Sr.) and Dylan Perkins (6-2, 235, Sr.) will come off the edge at defensive end. Justin Cates, who led the tackle charts with 100 stops last season returns at linebacker along with Sammy Sanchez with depth a plus including the efforts of Brandon Downey (5-10, 180, Sr.), Caden Abbot and Justin Garrett. The Tigers secondary returns intact with Chance Wafford (6-2, 165, Jr.), Carter Lawson, Hunter McCroskey plus Dylan Murray while Cade Cummings and Devan Murray will rotate in the mix of players along with Rusty Rudd. “With the combination of mental and physical maturity mixed with talent, all the ingredients for success are at our fingertips,” said Whiteley.

last season will anchor this year’s attack at a linebacker spot out of the 3-4 defense where he’ll be joined on the outside by McGowan, who led the team in interceptions last year, will be in charge of the secondary along with Andrew Carey and sophomore Trenton Justice. Stanley will return to be the stalwart of the defensive line

at the end position. “We are young but our expectations are high,” said Harris. “Noah didn’t wait for ark to come in, he built it.”

The Wildcats enter the 2016 campaign with big reasons for success including the return of seven starters on offense. One of the biggest causes for excitement is the play of VYPE Top 100 lineman Zach Henson (6-5, 315, Sr.) who continues to draw attention from the college recruiters along with Deryk Bollinger (6-3, 280, Sr.). “Games are won or lost on the line of scrimmage and there’s no denying Zach and Deryk will anchor our offensive front giving us plenty of opportunity to move the football, “ said Chad Hendricks, who begins his fourth year as head coach. The ‘Cats look to fill the other line positions with a rotation of talent including Cameron Humphrey (5-11, 260, Sr.), Chris Read (6-1, 200, Sr.) Landon Whitlock (5-11, 220, Jr.), Malik Jones (5-11, 250, Jr.), Todd Lackey (6-4, 295, So.) and Caden Walker (5-10, 225, So.). The line will open running lanes for Bailey Conatzer (5-10, 165, Sr.) to repeat last year’s results after rushing for 1,409 yards including 13 touchdowns. Ronnie Hall (6-0, 170, So.), a state track hurdles qualifier along with Adrian Jones (5-10, 160, So.) will also get chances to run the ball. Checotah enters the fall with a three-man battle at quarterback including Zach Taylor (5-10, 165, Sr.), Seth Knight (6-0, 160, Jr.) and Cade Shropshire (5-8, 135, So.) while Logan Sands (6-1, 185, Jr.), Andrew Kropp (5-8, 165, Sr.) and Clayton Cook (61, 180, Sr.) will rotate at wide receiver. Checotah’s defensive plans are simple…high energy and swarm to the football every play.

With six starters back in blue, the Wildcats have proven talent capable of producing turnovers along with players ready for their time to make things happen. Linebacker Dylan Mills (5-10, 215, Jr.) who totaled 91 tackles last year will join Collin Roberts (6-0, 190, So.) who made 82 stops from his outside position while David Underwood (5-10, 205, So.) is scheduled to jam things up at middle linebacker. Defensive tackles Deryk Bollinger and Zach Henson will control the line of scrimmage along with Bryan Richmond (5-10, 225, Sr.) while Cameron Humphrey, Logan Sands, Chris Reed and Dalton Clay (6-2, 185, So.) will come calling crashing from the defensive end positions. Andrew Kropp will captain the secondary at cornerback while Clayton Cook provides pass coverage and turnover producing tackles at safety. “We’ve got several players that have game starting experience and we’ve moved them to new positions to get the job done,” admits Hendricks. “Our offseason development of depth has also been a priority. I’m confident we can mature into good football team and be in the thick of the race for the playoffs.”

SEQUOYAH TAHLEQUAH INDIANS The Indians reached the 2015 Class 3A playoffs despite a rash of season ending injuries and enters the current campaign with a game experienced roster that includes six returning starters to the offensive unit. Caleb Helsley brings a dual threat at quarterback after rushing for 1,047 yards at 14 TDs while completing 55% of his passes last year. Therran Hammer who grabbed 25 receptions in 2015 returns to the lineup and will be joined by Bradyn Smith and Jeffery Vance as coach Shane Richardson looks to expand the passing game. The Indians duo of Logan Bush and Bobby Cade return with game time experience and will handle most of the running game to fill the void left by graduation of Justin Hooper’s 2,127 yards and 23 TDs. Berbon Hamilton is a welcome return to the offensive front after missing most of last year with injury and will be joined by Zech McClain at tackle while Sage Locust, Dakota Keys and tight end Logan Sanders seek to win the battles on the line of scrimmage. Play fast, swarm the ball and create takeaways will again be the defensive strategy for the Indians who return five starters plus a solid group of experienced players who’ve been waiting for their turn in the starting lineup. Quick Hits: The Tigers followed up a playoff appearance in 2014 with a playoff appearance in 2015. The last time Tahlequah qualified for the playoffs in back to back seasons was 2000-2001. 2000 was the last time the Tigers won seven games in a single season. Black and orange will dominate the stadium when Tahlequah hosts Sallisaw on September 16th. Sallisaw stays on the non-district portion of the schedule for the seventh straight year. The Tigers have beaten the Black Diamonds the past two seasons. The Tigers enter into a district with Skiatook's Bulldogs for the first time ever. The teams only previous meeting came in the first round of the 2014 playoffs and was a 28-0 decision for Skiatook. Last 5 Years: 2015 - 8-3 2014 - 5-6 2013 - 1-9 2012 - 1-9 2011 – 3-7

stops, returns at inside linebacker along with two-year regular Barry Neugin while the outside positions will again feature Cade, who made 40 tackles, along with Bush, who missed most of last season with a broken ankle. The four-man front will include Hammer, who made 68 tackles last season and Sanders protecting the edge at defensive end while noseguard Noah Wilson joins Locust on the interior. Smith is the lone returning starter in the secondary at free safety as the Indians will rely upon Arlis Reese and Vance to provide coverage at cornerback.

On the heels of back-to-back trips to the Class 5A playoffs, the Tigers expectations for a higher level are creating a loud roar as the 2016 campaign begins. Despite the loss of 21 seniors from the 8-3 season a year ago, head coach Brad Gilbert likes the progress of the program. “Our kids know what it takes to get there and they’re eager to take it to the next level,” said Gilbert who begins his 5th year at the helm. “The offseason commitment is proof they’re no longer satisfied just to make the playoffs.” Offensively, the Tigers will rely upon a solid ground game with Chet Rotton (5-10, 180, Sr.) returning at tailback after averaging 8.1 yards per carry last season. There’s a two-man race at quarterback including Cayden Aldridge (6-1, 190, Jr.) who rushed for 513 yards last season, and Seth Berry (5-10, 170, Jr.). Tahlequah’s ability to throw the football will benefit from the possession-type receivers including Cole McMurtrey (6-0, 175, Sr.) and Corbin Candy (5-10, 155, Jr.). Size, strength and depth are evident in the offensive front line where Chaz Jimerson (6-3, 285, Sr.) Dustin Hicks (6-2 255, Sr.) and Shelby Rose (5-10, 245, Sr.) return with starting role experience. Josh Johnson (5-10, 235, Sr.) along with Christian Martinez (6-0, 235, Jr.), Tanner McClure (6-1, 260, Jr.), Aidan Yahola (5-10, 230 So.), and Jesus Cerda (5-9, 240 Jr.) will bolster the effectiveness in the trenches. Defense will be a calling card for the Tigers with eight players having experience as a starter led by the influence of VYPE Top 100 choice Strauss

Springwater (5-10, 175, Sr.) at strong safety. Tabbed the face of the program by Gilbert, Springwater totaled 76 tackles last season. “Strauss is everything you want in a football player. His effort and attitude combined with his physical approach on every snap is special. Strauss leads by example and his teammates respond,” said Gilbert. Braxton Hood (6-0, 275, Sr.) returns to free safety after charting 44 tackles a year ago while the coverage skills of Cayden Aldridge and Chet Rotton at cornerback along with Carl Barnett (5-11, 160, Sr.), Derrick Margado (5-10, 155, Jr.) and Brayden Arnall (5-9, 160, Jr.) secure the play in the secondary. Tahlequah’s dynamic duo of Tyler Nail (6-5, 230 Sr.) who totaled 3 sacks plus 40 tackles in 2015, and Dustin Hicks will once again create havoc at defensive ends while Tigers’ coach will implement a rotation of players at noseguard. Jake Springwater (5-10, 180, Sr.) recorded 86 stops last season anchors the linebacker unit along with Jordan Hitchcock (5-11, 185, Sr), Bryan Resch (5-11, 170, Jr. and Austin Wood (5-11, 220, Sr.), who returns to play after an ACL injury a year ago.

KEYS COUGARS

Chris McMullen takes over the reins of a Cougar football program that has struggled over the past three seasons. Nolan Corry (6-0, 165, Jr.), who McMullen describes as a “good character” youngster, will be the quarterback for the second full season having also seen some action during his freshman season. Corry tossed for 857 yards and six touchdowns last season but will have to make some adjustments to the Wing-T formation that McMullen will introduce this season. Kylar Stilwell (5-9, 155, Sr.) will move from a receiver spot to take over the running back chores for the Cougars as he steps in for the now-departed Dakota Matlock. Keys will also benefit from the return of some experience and size in the offensive line with seniors River Chuculate (5-10, 225), Bryan Neff (6-1, 300), and Mike Malenski (5-11, 285) providing some much-needed senior leadership and the size to open some holes up front. If Corry and his running mates can make the adjustments, the Wing-T can pose a lot of problems for opposition defenses who are not accustomed to seeing it.

Trey Dill – R.J. Winslow – Kylar Stilwell – Nolan Corry On the plus side, the Cougars return 10 starters on defense and McMullen plans on keeping the 3-4 formation that has been in use which can only be an added benefit. Also a plus for the defense is that most of them don’t have to go both ways. Returning to anchor the front three will be Trey Dill (6-0, 185, Sr.) while a sold line backing corps will feature RJ Winslow (509, 175, Jr.), Alden Terrell (5-8, 170, Jr.) and Chase Walker (5-10, 165, Jr.). The defensive secondary is also an experienced group with Trae Primm (5-10, 150, Jr.), Tyler Russell (5-11, 175, Sr.) and Kaden Gower (5-8, 155, So.). Malenski may also be called on to play in the defensive front for the Cougars. McMullen hopes that what Keys may lack in size on defense they’ll make up for with speed and the ability to swarm to the football. AUGUST 2016

"We Are TIGERS"

Tahlequah High School All-Time Best Cheer Squads We’ve got spirit…yes we do…We’ve got spirit…how about you? From the very first high school football game played in Tahlequah to current day contests, the energy of the Tigers’ school spirit has generated from the efforts of high school cheerleaders inspiring the student body and fans in support of the team on the field. But what was once just a group of energetic and attractive young women wearing bright orange and black sweaters leading spirit yells from the sidelines has evolved into an athletic and wellconditioned group of students performing physically and mentally challenging routines in a competitive format just like the football, basketball and wrestling teams. Not until the 1983-84 school year did Tahlequah cheerleading participate on a competitive level. That fall, Vickie Dunlap Elliott, a 1978 THS graduate became sponsor and coach and immediately began changing the future for cheerleading when Tahlequah cheer participated in the Universal Cheerleaders Association regional competition and qualified for UCA Nationals in Orlando, Florida where they finished in 11th place out of 85 teams beginning a string of 12 consecutive top 15 finishes at the national event resulting in Tahlequah schools officially recognizing cheer as a sport and part of the school’s athletic squads. And the rest is history resulting in today’s Tahlequah All-Time Best Competitive Cheer squads. During the past 30 years, Tahlequah cheer has been among the best in Oklahoma. During the 1989-90 school year, the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association sanctioned cheer as an official sport holding state championship

competition won by Tahlequah’s Co-Ed team with their 90-second all cheer routine taking top honors. The 1991-92 squad repeated the state championship scores and would capture a state runner-up finish in the 1992-93 competition. Since those early days, the level of competition has grown into well-choreographed two-minute routines demanding pinpoint accuracy involving gymnastic and tumbling routines while maintaining orchestrated cheers to excite the crowd to standing ovations. Following the formation of the Oklahoma Cheer Coaches Association in 1993, the East-West All-State cheer teams have been selected from regional and state tryouts with 13 of Tahlequah’s best competitive cheerleaders earning the prestigious honors. Just as demanding and competitive as the annual tryouts, selection of Tahlequah High School's All-Time Best competitive cheerleaders were chosen for their excellence and maintaining the spirit of the Tahlequah Tigers at championship levels. All but one touchdown for Wagoner was scored or thrown by an underclassmen in the 54-20 semifinal win over Cascia Hall. That doesn’t bode well for the rest of Class 4A in 2016. Last 5 Years: 2015 - 14-0 2014 - 11-3 2013 - 12-1 2012 - 11-2 2011 – 13-1

After winning back-to-back Class 4A football state championships including 24 consecutive victories, the formula for success of the Wagoner Bulldogs has coach Dale Condict’s program the envy of many. The Bulldogs enter 2016 with seven starters returning from an offensive unit that averaged 44 points per game including 452 yards per contest amidst a 14-0 championship season. Condict smiles when looking at the cast of talent featuring a trio of VYPE Top 100 selections including quarterback Malcolm Rodriguez (6-0, 195, Sr.), K.J. Lee (6-1, 225, Sr.) and Nikia Jones (6-3, 210, Jr.). A two-year starter, Rodriguez totaled 2,289 yards passing with 31 touchdowns amidst a 65% completion rate while adding another 616 yards rushing and 11 scores, Rodriguez generated 42 touchdowns in the drive to the Class 4A crown as well as making 98 tackles and four interceptions from his strong safety position. Lee enters his fourth season in a starter’s role as a punishing runner with 1,729 career yards plus dominating play at linebacker recording 170 tackles including 27 for loss. Jones, known for making “the catch” resulting in the game-winning touchdown in the 4A finals, grabbed 35 receptions for 882 yards and 14 scores at wide receiver in 2015 raising his career totals to 1,583 yards in two seasons as well as making four interceptions at safety while punting for 37.3 yards per kick. Those impressive numbers are just the tip of the offensive iceberg considering the impact play of Orlandis Roberson (6-3, 245, Sr.), Blake Cooper (5-11, 250, Sr.) and Mateo Pena (5-11, 240, Jr.) along the offensive line. Expecting to add even more prowess in the trenches will be Taylor Osborne (6-5, 245, Sr.) and Austin Condict (5-8, 185, Jr.). And if Wagoner needed anything else, be sure to include the team’s fastest player Chris Murray (5-10, 160, Sr.) as a threat to score at any time as well as Marvin Trotter (5-6,

185, Jr.). Wagoner’s defensive muscle is equally impressive returning seven starters from a lineup that limited opponents to 16 points per game. Lee, Rodriguez, and Jones’ numbers are well documented and the trio reunites with Art Whibbey (6-0, 220, Sr.) who charted 99 tackles including 21 tackles for loss at defensive end along with Taylor Osborne (6-5, 245, Sr.) who anchored play at noseguard with 49 stops. Speed and talent abounds providing lockdown coverage at cornerback from two-year starters Cameron Dumond (5-10, 165, Sr.) who picked off six interceptions and Chris Murray, who made 37 tackles and 3 interceptions. Wagoner bolsters its defensive talents with the return at linebacker of Patrick Curley (6-2, 200, Jr.) from the injured list a year ago. If the Bulldogs need to go to the ‘Dawg Pound for added depth, Condict has a solid group of juniors including Steven Adair, Quentin Johnson, Dylan Mayfield and Corey Morman. So will the 2016 Wagoner Bulldogs make it three in a row as state champions of Class 4A football? The talent remains, the work ethic is a way of life and the community support is virtually unbridled. “These kids believe they can do it again,” said Condict, “and they know what it’s taken to get to this level and they’re taking nothing for granted.”
