Eight of Oklahoma’s best high school wrestlers take to the mat in Three Rivers earning VYPE Top 100 accolades as well as other “best bets” to reach the medal round at the OSSAA championships.
JALEI OGLESBY - Howe Lady Lions A key figure in the continued success of the Howe Lady Lions basketball team, Jalei Oglesby, a 5-7 sophomore guard, continues to light up the scoreboard as the Lady Lions maintain a number two ranking among the Class 2A basketball polls heading into the final month of regular season play after winning a third straight LeFlore County tournament. Oglesby tops the Howe scoring charts with her 17.8 points per game average with a consistent shooting touch from the perimeter along with the quickness to score on the bounce. In addition to the point parade in her second season in the starting lineup, Oglesby ranks at the top of the rebound charts snaring 6.6 per game. In the words of Chris Brown, head coach of the Lady Lions, Oglesby combines effort, energy and enthusiasm on and off the court. “Jalei is one of the hardest working players that I have had the opportunity to coach,” said Brown. “She holds herself to a high standard and will do whatever it takes to make herself a more complete player.” Photo courtesy Holly Cooper

FFA - It’s More Than a Sport.... Stigler FFA STIGLER Stigler FFA is a very active organization in our small town that we call home. From officer team functions, CDE events, show team events, power tech, and other important FFA events, we always have activities to be apart of and attend. Our power tech class has recently built hay rings for farmers and ranchers in our area. This was a great opportunity for our chapter to be involved with the people of our community. In 2016 we were fortunate enough to attend National Convention, which was an amazing and fun learning experience for some members of our chapter. We also were apart of a “get to know other FFA chapters” activity. This consisted of our chapter and others across the nation putting together a small box filled with things from their lives that showed the agricultural, educational, and recreational side to their area. Then the chapters shipped the box to a participating chapter and once that box was opened, it was passed on to another chapter and so forth. We sent our box to the West Central Valley FFA chapter located in Stuart, Iowa. We enjoyed getting to know this chapter and the other chapters participating, and we hope they felt the same. These experiences have helped our chapter to form relationships with others.
MULDROW The Muldrow FFA Chapter has been busy working in the shop this month. Some students have been building hay rings for the local farmers and ranchers. With the cold weather demand was high for the hay rings and the students had to work hard to keep them supplied. Hay rings are just one of the projects that Muldrow FFA does for the community. The students also build fence, feeders, smokers, lamb stands, and blocking chutes. One of the projects involved building a set of stairs for a local business. Another project built by the students was a set of dog irons to go in a fireplace. Shop students are

Muldrow FFA allowed to express their creativity to build deer stands, junk art, and many other items. With the CNC plasma cutter many different designs are possible. Entry way signs and cowboy cutouts are popular items. The students standing with a finished hay ring: From L-R are Kyle Chandler, Jackson Faulkner (shop foreman), and Seth Frasier.
GORE Members of the Gore FFA Chapter have gotten an early start on show season by going to jackpot livestock shows all across the area. The shows have helped them learn to be successful even under poor weather conditions. These jackpots have been a valuable learning experience especially for some that this was the first time in a show ring! The students have learned how to wash and clip their animals and get them ready to show. The students have had great success at these early shows! Pictured are Left to Right: Blakelee Pugh (2nd place Hamp & 2nd place Cross), Patti Fairman (4th place Hamp), and Grant Bennett ( 4th place Hamp). PORTER In the month of December the Porter FFA Chapter held a coat drive where we collected new and gently used coats, gloves, and stocking hats. After the drive was over we donated what everyone brought in to local organizations to be given out to deserving people in the community. Also we adopted a few angels from the Angel Tree and bought clothes and toys for them. Then to celebrate the holidays we had a Christmas Party where we ate and played Dirty Santa. ROLAND The Roland FFA was established in 1954 and currently has a membership of 84 members including students from the 8th to 12th grade who are actively involved in classes of instruction including Agriculture Exploration, Introduction to Agriculture Science, Agriculture Structures,
Gore FFA Introduction to Horticulture, and Animal Science. Roland FFA members attend leadership conferences, state and national conventions, public speaking events, livestock shows, FFA Career Development Events, chapter cooperative events, as well as perform community service activities as the display their commitment to the FFA Motto: Learning to Do, Doing to learn, Earning to live, Living to serve. Roland FFA attended the Northeast District Chapter Officer Leadership Training Conference in Tulsa and attended the National FFA Convention held in Indianapolis, IN. Members recently participated in the Ark-Oklahoma State Fair where they exhibited livestock and participated in the FFA Day Career Developments Events at the fair and won the Oklahoma Sweepstakes Award for the CDE activities. Members have participated in a food drive and help serve Christmas Dinner at the Bost School in Fort Smith. FFA members have participated in Land judging, Soil and Water Management, Dairy, Livestock, Agronomy, Horticulture, Public speaking, Nursery-Landscaping, and Sporting Clays this fall semester. Roland FFA officers for 2016-2017 are Kenna Wofford – Reporter, Shellby Wasson – Secretary, Mason Wiggins – President, Makayla Reese – VicePresident, Shelby Davenport – Treasurer and Sam Waddell – Sentinel.
WARNER The Warner FFA chapter has started off 2017 with a bang! We started the year off with the celebration of achieving our goal of collecting over 6,000 canned food items. The chapter celebrated that by giving the class that collected the most cans a pizza party and student Izabella Szabo who won the Pie in the Face raffle, pie our high school Principal Mr. Jeremy Jackson and school counselor Mrs. Misty Durrett. We also have students getting ready for the local, county, and regional livestock shows, preparing

for the State Officer Goodwill Tour, and many other things. We had two chapter members attend the Webber Falls jackpot on January 7th, those students were Callee Good and Brooklyn Herriman. Callee had the 4th place Duroc and 6th place Hampshire in their respective classes. Brooklyn Herriman had the 3rd place Chester, Hampshire, and Spot in their respective classes. We also had chapter member Jake Paul Perryman attend the Scarlet and Grey Midwest Showdown in Columbus, Ohio on January 8th where he had the Reserve Crossbred Steer. The Warner local show is scheduled for January 21st, 2017 where all livestock exhibitors will begin the 2017 show season if they haven’t already. The chapter was also fortunate enough to be selected as a chapter to hold the State Officer Goodwill Tour on January 26th, 2017 where four of the eight State Officers will visit our chapter. WEBBERS FALLS The Webbers Falls FFA Chapter is excited about the upcoming events for 2017. Members recently held an Aggie Olympics with the Gore FFA Chapter. Members participated in activities such as tug-a-war, greased pig contest, hay bale toss, and egg toss. Both chapters had fun and got to know members from the other chapter. This activity was a success for both chapters. GANS The new year of 2017 opens the door to many opportunities for service as Gans FFA chapter members take great pride in serving the local community. Gans FFA held their annual toy drive on December 16th. This is a tradition that the whole chapter takes a part in. Toys are gathered from members of the chapter as well as from the local community. “This year we had an excellent turn out!” Vice President, Brea Smith stated.
PORTER Porter FFA has wrapped the fall semester up with a coat drive and making some less fortunate kids very happy on Christmas day with angel tree gifts. The experience had developed a part of the student that is not developed out of a book with a test to follow. It is only from giving and providing for others that teach
Webbers Falls FFA
this kind of lesson. Tracy Criner, Sentinel said, “What a great feeling you get from giving.”
The spring semester is started. We have a number of students who are showing livestock and working diligent at preparing for the bigger shows in the spring. We started the season with a total number of 142 head of animals nominated to show at the Muskogee Regional show in Muskogee with over 100 going to the Oklahoma Youth Expo.
Gans FFA
Spring contests start March 21 with speech contest and CDE events, a very busy time of year for the chapter but a great time.
OKTAHA Oktaha FFA Chapter has already started off with a busy year. All students have been busy updating their records on their SAE’s in our new record keeping system. Our senior members are preparing their State FFA degrees including applications, resumes, and portfolios. We are also busy completing scholarship applications as well. Our chapter is very diversified, so our shop students are busily working on a variety of shop projects, and the archery team is practicing for our state competition. Also our livestock team is in full swing of the jackpot season. We have already had members recording several jackpot wins. This is also an important time of year in preparing our livestock projects for competition at the county and state levels. Congratulations to all our members thus far and good luck in the upcoming season.
PORUM A new year begins for Porum FFA members that will present endless opportunities for the group to continue to serve the local community as well as participating in a wide variety of events. Samantha Pearce, pictured showing her Reserve Breed Champion Simmental Heifer, participated along with Alaysia Barbee, Kaytie Cash and Ryan Holder the Connors State College Heifer Show.

Simply stated Pettit’s involvement in the welding program champions the learning by doing commitment at ICTC.
What do baseball pitchers and welders have in common…they BOTH bring the heat!
After earning success on the mound as a pitcher for the Cave Springs high school baseball team, Briar Pettit continues his pursuit for lifelong success through welding, the result of the learning opportunities available at Indian Capital Technology Center in Stilwell.
In addition to his baseball talents, Pettit, a 2017 senior, has already achieved athletic success through hard work including earning All-District lineman honors in football as well as capturing fourth place in the 240-pound classification at last year’s OHSFBCA powerlifting state championships. Now as a student enrolled in the combination welding program, part of the fulltime manufacturing programs at ICTC-Stilwell, Pettit stands ready to pass the “bend test.” “As a welder, you want to lay down the perfect bead,” Pettit said with a smile referencing the many different industry skills developed through the learning by doing approach of the ICTC curriculum.
“I’m like most every other young person who has played sports. Who hasn’t had dreams of becoming a professional athlete? But this program at ICTC is offering a dream come true for me by opening doors to a lifelong career success.”

“Our curriculum allows students the opportunity to design, engineer and build unique products that solve manufacturing challenges in the workforce as well as interpret blueprints and job specifications using math and critical thinking skills,” said Dwaine Colvin, welding instructor on the Stilwell campus.
“From day one until they complete the course, students gain hands on experience that not only provides performance certification required for their career path but also continues to develop life skills including confidence, work ethic and stamina necessary to be successful in their personal and professional careers.” A veteran of the workforce including a six-year stint as a pipeline welder and then a millwright professional experience, Colvin combines the requirements of the curriculum along with life skills he knows first hands his students will encounter.

referencing a prior welding experience while involved in agriculture classes at Cave Springs. “Just like trying to hit a baseball, welding challenges occur hot and fast. But thanks to Mr. Colvin and this program, I’m confident that no matter how big the obstacles are in life or on the job, through investing my time and never ending efforts to learn, I can overcome the hurdles still to come.” Admitting his students first question about the program is how much money can I make, Colvin admires the commitment of Pettit to take it to a championship level and open the doors to a rewarding career. “Briar is definitely on track to be one of our best students. When he’s done, he will have completed his SMAW, GMAW and GTAW requirements that making him a desired employee needed to fill one of the many vacancies. Not just because he can weld but because he’s willing to do the job right the first time,” said Colvin.
At the foundation of learning available through courses at Indian Capital Technology Center, is the commitment to deliver upon their promise… Careers Start Here. And with the proof of performance exampled by students including Briar Pettit of Cave Springs, the future is bright and filled with the opportunities for success.
“Welding is a science requiring basic education staples like math skills including geometry,” Colvin confirmed. “This program offers our students those traits and a lot more because it also builds their self esteem and confidence they can accomplish whatever the eye can see and the mind can dream.” In addition to safety and procedures necessary to set up and operate the equipment, welding students complete the program with certifications required for stick and TIG welding. Pettit echoes the thoughts of his mentor and coach concerning the balance of welding skills as well as building his own self-confidence. “I had no idea how hard it really is,” said Pettit

2017 SEQOUYAH COU ANOTHER CHAMPIONSHIP CLASSIC
The 18th edition of the Sequoyah County basketball tournament had something for everyone with plenty of excitement during the six day event including avoiding the best efforts of ol’ man winter to disrupt the energy on the hardwood displayed by the basketball teams from every school in the county competing in the boys and girls brackets. ROLAND MAKES IT EIGHT IN A ROW The more things change the more they stay the same best describes the end result of the boys bracket as the Runnin’ Rangers of Roland captured the 2017 crown to claim their eighth championship in a row. After needing a buzzer beater in last year’s finals, Roland seniors Mason Wiggins and Khalil Morris gave coach Ed Lewis plenty of reasons to smile early and often as Roland raced to a seven point halftime advantage. Wiggins would top the Rangers scoring efforts with 19 points while Morris combined four steals and six assists with 16 points including 11 in the final two periods of play. Julius Plummer scored the first seven points of the third period and would finish the quarter with 15 while Wiggins locked things up with a three point bomb to end the quarter as Roland all but turned out the light taking a 19 point advantage. Roland, who also won five SCT titles from 2003-2007, claimed the championship for th 13th time in the history of the event. Muldrow’s Caleb Armer continued his shooting touch dropping in six long range treys to lead the Bulldogs with 20 points in the finals. Coach Adam Simmon’s squad used a combination of smothering defense plus a

balanced offense from a quartet of juniors including Taylen Collins, Trevor Reeves, Braden Gleason along with Armer to reach the finals. Central Sallisaw rebounded from its semifinal setback to defeat Vian 60-45 riding the 19 point efforts of Dillon Cheater and Ty Gibson to pick up the third place trophy while the Wolverines 1-2 punch of Kaleb Glass and Javier Ramos each scored 16 points. Sallisaw finished the 2017 tournament on a pair of wins including a 66-51 victory over Stigler with a trio of double-digit scoring efforts as Marcus Murray and Josh Wiley paced the Black Diamonds with 12 points and Jason Bartel tossed in 10 points. Stigler was led by Jordan Dorris with 18 points while Nathaniel Shaffer tallied 10 points. In the semifinals, Stigler had to go to overtime to escape Roland 60-56 to advance to the championship game while Muldrow raced to the finals with a 51-26 victory over Vian. Championship Saturday belonged to the Lady Bulldogs of Muldrow as coach Jana Armer’s squad claimed their seventh Sequoyah County tournament championship, the first since 2012. Taking advantage of defensive pressure forcing turnovers, Muldrow used a 12-4 run midway through the second quarter en route to the 57-43 victory as sophomore Hannah Boyett found her shooting touch to lead all scorers with 16 points while freshman talent Taylen Collins added 13. Stigler’s effort to claim the tournament title was led by 11 points from Shauntey Hays and Madison Gilmore. 'HOT WATER'
Fort Gibson Boys Swim Team In Quest of State Title
Entering the swimming arena at Fort Gibson High School, success is evident when reading the banners that define the accomplishments of Tiger swimmers. In addition to the impressive list of swimmers and school records are the memories of four consecutive state titles won by the Lady Tigers between 2011 and 2014 along with the documentation of three state runner-up finishes for the boys swim team. The coveted element missing is a boys state championship something that head coach Connie Dean believes the time is now. “Winning the boys championship is something that remains on my bucket list,” smiled Dean, who is in her 17th season as mentor of the swimming program at Fort Gibson. “We’ve finished runner-up the past two years and with our senior leadership and the development of underclassmen, we’ve got what it takes to get it done.” Despite not having as much depth as in recent years the Tigers remain atop the Class 5A rankings. Dean points to the leadership of seniors Zach Taylor, Chandler Barnes, Matt Burris, Teddy Hammond and Josh Sterner as the anchors of the team along with talents of juniors Sam Carter, John Wing and Tallon
Wall as well as the consistency of results form sophomores Timmy Hammond, Christian Hays, Connor Landers and Larry Crooks to add to the Tigers point totals in competition. “Zach has a really good chance to step on the medal stand in the distance events,” notes Dean. “Sam is on pace to a recordsetting season in the breast stroke. There’s a good chance he’ll set a new school mark as well as reach the top step on the medal stand at state.” For the 2017 seniors, this year is all about leaving a legacy and doing something that’s never been done by the boys swim team at Fort Gibson. Chandler Barnes, who specializes in the 200IM, 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly, is certain of the team’s focus. “We’re determined to leave a legacy,” said Barnes. “It’s something that you think about all the time.” Team captain Zach Taylor, who ranks among the top times in the 200 and 400 freestyle as well as anchoring two relay squads, agrees the chase for the state title has changed the approach to practices each day “No doubt it’s pushed all of us to work harder every day in practice. With the level of competition we face from the bigger schools like Altus, Stillwater and Tulsa Washington, it doesn’t allow any of us to slack off.” Sophomore swimmer Timmy Hammond
challenged his older brother Teddy Hammond to swim this season and the brother duo combine to produce scoreboard points in the 50 and 100 freestyle races. “No doubt it’s a total team effort,” agreed Dean. “Christian (Hayes) always scores high in the 200 and 400 freestyle and we rely upon the bonus points we pick up from Matt (Burris) in the 400 free and 100 breaststroke, as well as John (Wing) in the 100 free and 100 breaststroke as well as Tallon (Wall) in the 100 butterfly and 50 free. Everyone is doing their part.” After taking a glance at the banners on the wall, Barnes confirms there’s another point of motivation for the seniors. “We look at the wall and see the four girls championships and our runner-up finishes and it lights a fire to write our own chapter of success,” said Barnes in a deep voice of commitment. “On a scale of 1-to-10, for me it’s an 11. It’s time to finish the mission and hang a boys banner that will forever read state champions 2017.” The combination of talent and determination has set the stage for a season to remember. Now it’s time for the boys swimmers at Fort Gibson to be first to touch the wall and take their place in school history. JANUARY 2017

MONSTERS ON THE MAT The collection of talent selected for the VYPE Top 100 wrestling team consists of athletes proving their skills on the map with a requirement of finishing in the top three of their respective weight class as well as school classification. The 2017 returning wrestlers named to the Top 100 include 31 individual gold medal winners. Among the best of the best are eight wrestlers from the competition mats in Three Rivers including two gold medal winners plus, two state runner-up finishers and a quartet of bronze medal winners.
JET TAYLOR – Sallisaw Black Diamonds 126 lbs. – Senior Two-time Defending Champion The two-time state champion lives to compete on the wrestling mat whether in competition or in the workout room. Following a 35-6 campaign at 120, Taylor, who signed a college scholarship offer with Oklahoma State University will bump up to 126 pounds this year where he executes an innovative style creating scoring opportunities with explosive quickness and strength.
MALCOLM RODRIGUEZ – Wagoner Bulldogs 195 lbs. – Senior Defending Champion Since weighing in a 132 pounds as a freshman, Rodriguez seeks a fourth straight trip to the Class 4A state meet. The Wagoner senior turned a

silver medal in his junior season into a gold medal winning the 182-pound class in 2016 finishing 32-3. Mild mannered off the mat, Rodriguez displays an aggressive and physical meanness against each opponent often resulting in a fall or major decision victory.
Gaining an advantage employing strong hips to control opponents, Brown is charge of most matches.
JUSTIN CATES – Fort Gibson Tigers 182 lbs. – Senior Wrestles with the “eye of the Tiger” implementing an aggressive style to score the first takedown and uses his experience of strength to get opponents on their back quickly. Cates exchanged a sophomore bronze medal for the silver medal last year at 182 pounds with a 38-9 record and is on track to record 100 plus wins in his career capping it off by standing on the top step of the podium as state champion in this year’s Class 4A tournament in February.
SAMMY SANCHEZ – Fort Gibson Tigers 195 lbs. – Senior Last season’s 36-7 record for Sanchez included winning a bronze medal at the Class 4A championships. Despite only starting to wrestle in the seventh grade, Sanchez brings power to mat combined with aggressiveness to score points off the first move and the patience if needed to be defensive and capitalize when the opportunity is there.
LEVI HARRIS – Wagoner Bulldogs 113 lbs. – Sophomore Harris made an immediate impact last year as a freshman wrestling at 106 pounds by reaching the championship match in the Class 4A state meet finishing the season with a 30-11 record. Described as “freakishly strong” by coach Micco Charbonneau, Harris wrestles strong on his feet to gain an advantage in every match.
TREY IVEY – Wagoner Bulldogs 145/152 lbs. Senior A two-time qualifier, Ivey earned a bronze medal finish in the 2016 Class 4A tournament including a sudden-victory decision before posting a major decision to claim third place completing a 33-9 campaign. Technically sound, Ivey’s strength allows an athletic approach on the mat. BRYCE BROWN – Wagoner Bulldogs 182 lbs. – Senior Entering his senior season coming on an ACL injury last spring in soccer, Brown will move up the weight ladder after claiming a Class 4A third place finish at state and a 35-10 record.
BLAINE BUCHANAN – Checotah Wildcats 195 lbs. – Senior The Wildcats leader on the mat displayed his talents on the big stage last season with 20-2 mark including a bronze medal in the 182-pound Class 3A division. A never quit attitude, disciplined style combined with strength will benefit Buchanan’s chance to stand on top of the podium wrestling at 195. An Oklahoma High School Rodeo steer wrestling state champion continues to achieve gold in 2016 to become Checotah’s first-ever wrestling state champ.
The road to a gold medal in February will be demanding for these eight wrestlers along with another group of athletes with state tournament experience and capable of standing at the top of the medal stand at the OSSAA State Championships in late February.
