of the Month John Pruitt
Westville High School As a student at Westville High School, John Pruitt understands first hand the challenge of temptation that teenagers encounter everyday. While playing football, basketball, track and soccer for the Yellowjackets, Pruitt follows a game plan that comes from knowing Jesus Christ.
“Temptation gets to a lot of people,” admits Pruitt. “It’s an everyday thing that’s never going away. Peer pressure is the biggest challenge that teenagers face; but knowing that God loves me unconditionally gives me comfort and strength to resist temptation and the courage to be an influence for Christ.” “You have to dig down deep in your heart and listen for God’s voice to guide you. It’s my pillar of strength knowing that He’s always there.”
Ephesians 6: 10-13 (NLV): “Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.”

Oktaha Basketball Character is defined by many as doing the right thing at the right time when no one else is looking. And, the split second actions of six members of the Oktaha High School boys’ basketball team have left a lifetime impression for young and old alike as a role model to follow. Levi Hill and Bryce Ayers were on their way to join teammates Kirk Washington, Logan Gragg, Zach Evans and Brandon Nicholson for a pre-game meal prior to the Homecoming night basketball game when thoughts of basketball vanished in lieu of helping total strangers whose vehicle had run off U.S. 69 and plunging to the road below and caught fire. “It looked really bad,” said Washington, a sophomore, who first saw the accident from his family’s vehicle. “Their car plunged 25 feet down onto old 69 below and was on fire.” Noticing the smoke, Hill immediately stopped his truck as he and Ayers jumped out to join Washington in the rescue effort. “My first reaction was we’ve got to get these people out of the car,” said Hill. “Your heart stops when you see the car,” replied Ayers. “It was a natural reaction to do everything you can to help out.” Gragg, Evans and Nicholson returned to the scene after a cell phone call alerted them of the situation. “We called them to see where they were and they told us about a wreck,” said Gragg, a senior at Oktaha. “Zach, Brandon and me knew we had to go help.” With the vehicle on fire, the six students responded immediately using whatever means to extinguish the blaze. And, without tools, the courageous teens opened the doors to the car trying to free the victims. “We had one bottle of water,” admits Gragg. “So, we grabbed a hoodie from Kirk’s mom and started slapping at the flames. Then, we just started throwing dirt on the fire trying to put it out.” Before emergency responders arrived, the efforts of
the students had things under control. “It all happened in 3 or 4 minutes,” Washington recalled, but it seemed like an hour.” Since the accident on January 28th, the teen’s efforts which prevented a potential tragedy have been acknowledged by many including the State of Oklahoma legislature, where the group was honored by proclamation and presented a special medal of honor from the chief of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Ricky Adams.
Kirk Washington – Brandon Nicholson – Zach Evans – Levi Hill – Bryce Ayers – Logan Gragg
“They shook our hands and applauded, it was awesome,” recalled Washington while looking at the commendation medal. “But, the result is that it’s opened our eyes and made us all more aware and careful.” “Those few moments also changed our team chemistry,” admits Gragg, a senior. “It brought us all closer together.” Oktaha superintendent Jerry Needham shares the pride of the students noting it would be what he expected these young men would do. “Proud yes but not surprised,” Needham confirmed. “They’re all good kids from good families doing the right thing in the right place at the right time with character and respect. God, country and family is what we’re all about at Oktaha.” Each of the six remains reserved in their response to the attention, admitting its all about character. “Everyone’s calling us heroes, but that’s not what it was,” said Hill, ‘it was just doing the right thing. That’s the way all of us were raised.” “As teenagers, we think we’re all bullet proof,” admits Ayers. “But by the grace of God, we were put there to separate what’s right and wrong.” The qualities built into an individual’s life that determine his or her response, regardless of circumstances prove a person’s true character. Thanks to the efforts of the six students at Oktaha, the value and benefits of character shines like the brilliance of a diamond as a reward and example to follow for everyone.

Back to back and three-peat championship performances are marks of success no matter the sport. However, the Fort Gibson girls swim team enters the water at the Class 5A state championship determined to establish dominance by winning the team title for a fourth consecutive year.
Not only has Fort Gibson won the battle in the water, the Tigers will also be chasing a fourth straight academic state title. The unique accomplishment is something that has head coach Connie Dean on pins and needles. “It’s exciting and nervous,” said Dean, now in her 14th season as head coach of the swimming program. “We’ve battled through injuries and illness throughout the season forcing us to adjust our lineup. Give the girls credit; they’ve battled through it all.” 20

Despite being the number one ranked team all year, the Tigers understand nothing is guaranteed. Dean credits a dual meet loss at Harrah, the first dual loss in 5 seasons, as a wake up call for her squad.
“You can’t take anything for granted,” said Dean, “and the girls know that. We got a slap in the face when we lost that dual. All of the sudden they recognized you can’t just show up and expect to win. Since then, they’ve responded with a spirit of a champion with a hunger to be the best.”
In previous years, qualifying times were used to advance to the state championship meet. This year, event times at regionals are the only ticket to advance. The changes in the qualification system increased the demand for a balanced team effort swimming at peak performance. “It all came down to a one day
effort at regionals,” said Dean. “That alone made it a little more nerve wrecking. You just have to maintain focus and swim your best.” A quintet of five seniors has a rare opportunity to finish their high school careers by winning gold all four years in the pool. Leslie White, Whitney Stroup, Kelsie Longpine, Audrey Ross and Kyla Martin will be joined by a cast of underclassmen determined to raise the bar of excellence.

backstroke in the relays too.”
Kyla Martin White, who owns school records in the 100m breaststroke and 200 IM, captured the gold medal in both events last year as well as swimming one of four legs of the 200 freestyle relay where the Tigers currently hold the state record (1:46.34).
“Leslie is so powerful in her shoulders and legs,” said Dean. “She’s going for three in a row in the 100 breast stroke. Her confidence and strength make her hard to beat.” White missed the first half of the season due to a back injury; something that Dean admits has made the team even stronger.
“The girls all responded,” said Dean referring to White’s absence. “Our seniors took the lead and all of the girls stepped up their performances.”
“Whitney Stroup is my all around swimmer,” admits Dean. “I can put her in any event and feel confident. She’s been a mainstay in the 200 and 500 freestyle distance events. She can swim the fly or the
Audrey Ross
In addition to Stroup, Dean credits the efforts of Kyla Martin and Audrey Ross for making a difference.
“Kyla is our power swimmer,” said Dean. “She specializes in the sprints and goes all out to be the first to touch the wall. Audrey has done everything ask of her competing in the breaststroke and the IM (individual medley). The fifth senior, Kelsie Longpine, draws special praise from the coach.
“We wouldn’t have won the three academic titles in a row without Kelsie,” notes Dean. “With her 4.0 GPA, no doubt she’s the anchor leg, the academic captain of our team.”
In addition to the seniors, called by Dean a “classic collection of strong swimmers”, Fort Gibson returns added experience under pressure with Sarah Nichols, a sophomore, who picked up valuable points a year ago. “Sarah is the prototype swimmer,” Dean said. “She uses her long and lanky frame to her advantage. I’m excited to see what she’s going to do in the backstroke.” Dominance doesn’t continue without depth in the program where Fort Gibson re-loaded
its lineup with Delainie Terrell, Lauren Martin and Shelby Jackson filling spots from graduation losses.
“Delainie is another dual sport swimmer,” said Dean noting that Terrell also plays basketball. “She combines those skills to benefit her talents competing in the sprints, the fly and backstroke.” Dean points out the contributions of Martin and Jackson may be a deciding factor at state.
“Shelby and Lauren will be a plus,” said Dean. “They’ve improved all year and their times at state will be an added plus.” According to Dean, another added plus for success in the water is the academic achievement of her squad that maintains a team total 3.833 grade point average keeping the Tigers in line for a fourth straight academic state title.
“Academics and swimming is a perfect match,” said Dean. “Not only are there physical demands of performance, our team’s approach to swimming includes a mental preparation. The kids on our team accept the responsibility to their grades and take pride in winning the academic championship as well.”
With a combination of talent, experience and determination, the Fort Gibson Tigers girls swim team will no doubt be ready to deliver and step back atop the medal stand at the Class 5A state swimming championships.

Tiger Q&A
Leslie White - Fort Gibson Tigers VYPE: Does winning three straight state championships bring added pressure or motivation for your senior year?
Leslie White A senior at Fort Gibson High School, Leslie White knows what winning is all about. A member of the state champion swim team, White enters the 2014 Class 5A state meet seeking to win a third gold medal in the 100m breaststroke. Following graduation, White expects to pursue a pre-Med degree while continuing her swimming career on the collegiate level while following her dream to one day competing in the Olympics. VYPE: What’s your pre-race routine?
White: I definitely have to have everything in its place; everything has to be done in order. I listen to my iPod, put on my cap & place goggles on my head. Then I’ll stretch, check the board for times and focus. When they call us to the block, I’ll bend over 1 time and take my mark.
White: It’s a little bit of both. People are expecting us to win. We’ve been in this pressure before and it’s kind of scary. But it’s definitely a motivation for me and everyone on the team to continue. VYPE: You’ve won individual gold medals in the breaststroke and 200 IM; do you have a favorite event?
difference in how you approach swimming an individual event versus a team relay? White: For sure, in the individuals, I’m more focused on my personal approach where with a team relay I’m dialed in on the team plan to winning the race. VYPE: Ok, let’s have some fun with this question: If you could be anyone in the world for a day, who would you be and why? White: Rebecca Soni. She won 2 Olympic gold medals including the world record in the 200m breaststroke. She’s short like me but still proved to be the best.
White: The breaststroke is my personal favorite. It’s a lot more technical race and that’s what I like about it. VYPE: Is there a

Stilwell’s Dillion Duval Combines Personal Power and Creativity For Success “His approach is what’s needed in an industry that’s continuously changing,” said Fletcher. “New vehicles today are equipped with computers that make it more difficult to diagnose. Dillon is a thinker that sees the whole picture and then picks up a wrench and finishes the job.”
Dillion Duval A senior at Stilwell High School, Dillion Duval enjoys the high energy pace of competition as a member of the Indians’ football team as well as the powerlifting squad. While competing in the 168 pound division, Duval delivers championship efforts including 475 pound squat, 300 pound bench and deadlift totals of 440 pounds. “I see myself making the lift before I grab the bar,” said Duval, “then I combine the strength and balance needed to push up the weight.”
Duval applies his “visionary approach” to learning while enrolled in programs at Indian Capital Technology Center including the automotive services program. “Watching the classroom videos I can see it come together,” said Duval. “But, the best part is the chance to get my hands dirty and make it work.” Duval’s approach to learning the automotive industry brings a smile to Jody Fletcher, auto services instructor at ICTC.
Automotive students at ICTC participate in a 50-50 mix of classroom and shop time.
“Year one students learn heat and air conditioning, steering suspension and brakes,” said Fletcher, “before tackling the two harder parts of the program including engine performance and electrical in year two.”
“I like the front end alignment,” admits Duval. “It’s amazing how something so small can support and balance the weight of the vehicle. It’s just like my approach to powerlifting through balance and strength.”
of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce.
“I draw whatever is on my mind,” smiled Duval. “My design includes the state bird, the Oklahoma flag and the buffalo and the progress of the state over more than a hundred years.” Duval’s exemplary efforts earned him Student of the Month honors on the ICTC campus in Stilwell.
“He’s one of the best students I’ve had in the program,” said Fletcher. “Because of his academic approach along with his creative and design abilities, I’d have no problem saying here’s my vehicle Dillion; I know you will fix it.” For Dillion Duval, creating learning opportunities through his classes at ICTC is a chance for future success.
“It’s just about learning something new everyday,” smiled Duval, “and it’s giving me the opportunity to unlock tomorrow’s door for success.”
Like powerlifting and automotive training, Duval also uses his visionary traits with creative design. His pencildrawn design that reflects the history of Oklahoma is under consideration for use as a model design for SkillsUSA, a partnership
