During high school basketball playoff action, VYPE caught up with Erin Edwards of Muldrow High School to answer questions for Triple Play. After getting her answers, we posed the questions to Erin’s mom, Shannon Edwards, for her answers and then presented the challenge to Jana Armer, head basketball coach of the Lady Bulldogs. Who has the best game plan? Described as a coach on the court, Muldrow High School senior Erin Edwards is a two-year starter for the Lady Bulldogs basketball team. In addition to her skills on the floor, Erin, known to her friends as “E”, is also a solid performer in softball where she plays second base. Edwards thanks Coach Armer for her superstitious habits that include having to wear a “specific pair of socks without holes” for each game. A standout in the classroom with a 4.23 GPA, Edwards will attend Northeastern State University majoring in Biology as the next step toward becoming a Pediatrician while working in missions.

of the Month Brent Hill Howe High School
For Brent Hill, a senior at Howe High School, the basketball court is more than a place to display talent; it is a platform for sharing his faith and a classroom for developing character. The 6-5 starting center for the Howe Lions was the leading shot-blocker in the state in Class 2A; but his favorite part of the game is the minutes spent beforehand leading his team in prayer. “I feel like my purpose in life is twofold: to honor God and to help others,” said Hill. “Basketball has given me the opportunity to do both while playing a game I love.”
As co-captain and team mediator, Brent feels it his privilege to remind teammates that more important than their 26-5 record is the integrity with which they play. “Like any competitive athlete, I like to win but I believe that real winners display character in the heat of the game,” said Hill, whose teammates often tease him about making friends of the opposing team. Hill displays his Christ-based integrity off the court as well. While maintaining a 4.0 GPA, Hill has completed over 300 community service hours during his high school career.
“Christ has affected every part of my life. I want my words and my actions on and off the court to express my appreciation to Him.”
Colossians 3:17 (NIV): “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men.”

Cary Hayes - Warner High School Character has many traits that define a person’s true nature. For Cary Hayes, a senior at Warner High School, character is not what you say but is best defined through actions helping others. “You are what you do,” said Hayes, coValedictorian of the class of 2014 at Warner. “You just have to be yourself…helping others everyday…and set a good example for others to follow.” “Character is all about integrity,” said Jeremy Jackson, principal at Warner High School, “what you do at school as well as in your personal life. And, that defines Cary. He leads by example with quiet dignity. His example is one that you want every student to follow.” In addition to his excellence in the classroom, Hayes competes as member of the school’s cross country team as well as other group activities all the while taking concurrent enrollment with college classes, a schedule that requires Hayes top efforts. “It takes hard work,” Hayes admits. “I push myself to be the best. And, even though I may fail on occasion, I know others rely upon me to always do my best in order for them to succeed.” “He’s president of the FFA chapter and drum major for the band,” notes Jackson. “Cary is a driving force in our school’s leadership team and demonstrates characteristics of leadership everyday in the hallway with his peers, students at the junior high as well as with our elementary students.” Hayes admits he feels a calling to help others; and enjoys the time spent tutoring kids in the elementary grades as a way of giving back to his school. “My life shouldn’t be all about me. It’s more important that we help each other,” Hayes stated. “The generation below me is more important because if I can do my part to help them now they

can do their part in the future.” A quiet and reserved Hayes acknowledges he’s benefited from others efforts and welcomes his opportunities for service. A member of the National Honor Society, Hayes leads the group’s Pennies for Patients, to raise funds for the American Cancer Association. He smiled when describing the FFA chapter’s “appreciation breakfast” for teachers at the school. I’ve been fortunate to have teachers and coaches that have given extra efforts to challenge me to reach my potential,” said Hayes in appreciation. “My FFA advisor, Ira Jackson, has been a strong influence to show me how to do everything to its fullest and never give up on anything. The breakfast was a small token of saying thanks for everything.” After graduation, Hayes game plan for helping others will continue as he pursues a degree in pastoral ministries. “My faith in God is a huge part of who I am in everything I do,” Hayes said. “Helping other people is just a small way that I can be an influence.” “Character is what you do 24 hours a day, even more in today’s times with all the social media opportunities for young people to put themselves in the spotlight,” said Jackson in recognition of Hayes. “Cary goes to sleep with character, wakes up with character and embodies that all day long. He’s at the top of the ladder at Warner. We’d like to clone him or bring him back for another year.” Regardless of circumstances, the quality of an individual’s character is demonstrated by what you when no one else is around or looking over your shoulder. And, like the brilliance of a diamond molded to perfection through trials and pressure, the future success for Cary Hayes will no doubt shine bright whatever road he travels to help others discover their own light of success.

Fort Gibson Girls’ Swim Team Are State Champions – AGAIN the 200 medley to be followed by the quartet of Audrey Ross, Kyla Martin, Terrell and White to win the 200 freestyle race in a time of 1:48.83 just in front of Kingfisher.
“We knew the 200 free relay was the key,” said Dean. “It was really close with Kingfisher in that race. But after we were first to touch the wall, I felt like we’re going to do this again.”
Leslie White Twice is nice…three times is terrific… and by winning a fourth consecutive Class 5A state swimming title, the Fort Gibson Lady Tigers have completed a rare accomplishment in high school sports as five seniors wrapped up their careers in the pool with another gold medal performance.
Propelled by the strength of its relay teams, coach Connie Dean’s team outpaced the 5A field again by taking first in the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays. Sarah Nichols, Leslie White, Whitney Stroup and Delainie Terrell started the championship performance in a time of 1:58.96 to win

Bolstering the championship totals for the Lady Tigers was the individual performance of senior swimmer Leslie White, who won the 100 breaststroke for a third straight year in a time of 1:07.71. White added a silver medal in the 200 IM.
“Not being able to swim the first half of the year made it tough,” smiled White, recalling the moment she touched the wall. “But I wasn’t going to let that keep me from winning my senior year.”
White, a senior who owns school records in the 100 breaststroke, 200 IM plus part of the Tigers’ state record holding 200 freestyle relay team, along with Whitney Stroup, Kyla Martin, Audrey Ross and Kelsie Longpine leave behind a legacy for next year’s team with four straight championship trophies. The team’s performance resulted in a combined 247.50 points to finish ahead of second place Stillwater with 207 points with Harrah in third with 162 points.
“It’s awesome,” said White, in reference to the combined effort of this year’s team to win a fourth straight Class 5A crown. “A lot of schools have individuals that are fast, but it’s amazing that we have so many girls that are all at the same championship level.”
Dean admits she saw the look of determination in White on Saturday.
“She beat the girl from Bishop Kelley in the regionals by a fingertip,” said Dean. “When she got to the wall on Saturday in first place, I saw a smile on her face I’ll never forget. She’s a true champion.”
Delainie Terrell
Dalton Martin Sarah Nichols, a sophomore, evidenced the determination to repeat by swimming through the pain of a dislocated elbow in the championship finals. “She jammed her elbow so hard that it required medical attention,” admits Dean. “But she’s a gamer and refused to come out of the water and then swam the fastest split in the 400 free relay.” The 400 free relay squad of Nichols, Stroup, Terrell and Martin locked up the championship with a silver medal time of 4:01.03.
Fort Gibson’s boys swim team also used a total team effort including solid results in the relays to finish in fourth place with 221 points as Stillwater won the Class 5A boys crown.
The foursome of Jordan Diebold, Connor Schapp, James Huggins and Brandon Walker completed the 200 free relay in a time of 1:33.98 for a third place bronze medal finish. The 400 free quartet of Schapp, Huggins, Dalton Martin and Walker earned a 4th place finish with a 3:26.78 effort.
“The guys brought their best times at state,” said Dean, “against an extremely tough field. “This is one of the most talented groups of boys swimmers we’ve had here in awhile. Brandon Walker set two school records (200 free & 100 free) at state and Connor Schapp
Lauren Martin
James Huggins, Jordan Diebold, Brandon Walker, Connor Schapp broke the 200 IM record.”
As Dean admits, the combined results of the girls and boys swim teams is a definite mark of success.
“It’s been a successful year,” smiled Dean. “This group of seniors, boys and girls, has provided an unparalleled record of success for both teams. And, the kids returning give us a foundation of success for the future.” Class 5A Girls Team Results: Ft. Gibson 247.50, Stillwater 207, Harrah 162

of SUCCESS
Growing up a farm girl in western Oklahoma, Connie Dean never thought about becoming a swimming coach. But the one true facet of character that Dean learned as a child and still treasures today is the value of hard work.
“I was one of seven siblings,” Dean said while recalling her days living on a farm near Medford. “Everything was so competitive, especially with my brothers and me. My parents demonstrated to each of us the value and rewards of hard work.” It was during the summertime that Dean worked at the community pool earning a water certification that led to her eventual career as a swim coach at Fort Gibson.
“I was the ‘spit-in-your-eye’ type player in basketball, volleyball, softball or track but swimming was different,” said Dean. “Teaching swimming lessons was something that gives everyone a chance to succeed.” Dean came to Fort Gibson and eventually joined a winning swim program as an

assistant with then head coach Ray Wise. When the door opened to become the head Fort coach in 2001, Dean dived into the deep water ready to go to work. And now after 14 years, Dean’s program has become the example of success. Something the coach credits to the hard work and determination of “her kids.”
CONNIE DEAN
“In our program, the kids all understand that swimming is a tough sport, that demands will power and self determination,” Dean said. “You swim with your face in the water most of the time so there’s no time for self gratification.” According to Dean, the program’s success, that’s been defined as dominant following the current string of four consecutive Class 5A girls state championships, is just one measure of her career satisfaction.
“Society’s viewpoint on success is based upon who wins the trophy or medal,” said Dean, “but swimming is different than any other sport. You can finish in 8th place and drop your time by 5 seconds and still be successful.” Dean also points to her “family approach” with the girls and boys teams growing up like a group of brothers and sisters competing
Gibson High School against each other while supporting every person’s efforts as proof of success.
“It’s an emotional attachment with our swimmers,” said Dean. “Our season is long, training for hours and hours for months on end. We spend so many hours together, our kids become a family. That’s why we go to movies together, eat together, and go to church together. As a coach, you interact as an instructor, mentor, and sometimes a parent.” Personal satisfaction for Dean includes championships, trophies and medals plus state and school records. But what’s most important is what comes when her swimmers return to the pool later in life.
“I pour my heart and soul into our program,” said Dean with a tearful eye. “It’s a special moment when kids come back and say coach you made a difference in my life. They come back to check on me and want to be a part of the program with their own kids or help another swimmer that needs support.” So what’s left on Dean’s bucket list of accomplishments?
“I want our boys program to get a state championship like the girls,” Dean said. “They’ve worked so hard and deserve to get their opportunity to stand atop the medal stand alongside the girls.”
No doubt, with the eye of the Tiger approach along with Dean’s compassionate heart of encouragement, the championships for both teams are sure to continue.

“Let’s Play Two” If it’s not the best-known quote in all baseball, it is close. Chicago Cubs Hall of Famer Ernie Banks and the phrase “Let’s play two” are instantly identifiable. The statement embodies both the simple joy of the game and Banks’ unique, indomitable and optimistic spirit. As this year’s high school baseball season begins, dynamic duos of local teams are more than ready for the umpire’s call…“Play Ball.”

Hunter Wilson – Spiro 5-10 165 SR - Shortstop Colby DeMato -- Spiro 6-0 170 SR - Centerfield The Bulldogs have been part of the Class 3A state tournament the past two seasons and expectations are to finish the chase in 2014 riding the skills of Wilson and DeMato. Known for his skilled play at shortstop, Wilson has already signed a Division-I baseball letter of intent with Stephen F. Austin. A fan of the Yankees, Wilson produced 44 hits with a .449 average including seven doubles with a .534 on-base percentage plus 21-21 stolen base attempts to go along with his dependable defensive talents at shortstop.
DeMato makes every step count as the speedy outfielder has robbed opponents of base hits on multiple occasions while terrorizing the base paths stealing bases, including a 33 steal-34 attempt effort in 2013. Those numbers explain Mike Trout is DeMato’s favorite major leaguer. The Bulldogs’ talented senior, who hit for a .467 batting average including 50 hits and 38 RBI last spring, has signed with Coffeyville Community College in Kansas. Jon Andrews – Vian 6-6 205 SR - LHP/1B Rylee Simon – Vian 6-0 212 JR - 3B/SS The Wolverines will call upon the talents of Andrews and Simon in order to return to the Class 3A state tournament. Andrews, the tall lanky lefty was clutch in Vian’s race to the Class 3A finals in 2013 with a 9-1 record including 49 strikeouts in 59 innings with a 4.25 ERA. A lifelong fan of the New York Yankees, Andrews combines orange Gatorade, ranch-flavored seeds and big league chew for his pre-game routine. Andrews has signed to play college baseball at Coffeyville Community College in Kansas.
A vacuum cleaner glove on the corner at third base, Simon also delivers in the clutch when at the plate driving in 46 runs in 96 trips to the plate in 2013 with a .427 batting average. Yankees great Derek Jeter is Simon’s favorite pro player because “he plays the game the way it’s supposed to be played everyday.” With his 4.0 GPA, Simon’s mental approach to every pitch makes his results top notch whether at bat or at third base. Jace Pitchford – Poteau 5-11 185 SR - CF/SS
Michael Didway – Poteau 5-8 250 SR - RHP/1B/3B The Pirates expectations for success will be guided with the speed and power of Pitchford and Didway in the lineup. A fan of the LA Angels and Mike Trout, Pitchford set 5 school records as a junior including 45 stolen bases, 46 runs scored, 53 hits in 150 at bats including 18 doubles. His speed is an added plus in the outfield taking away opponents hits. An All-State football player, Pitchford has signed a college letter of intent with Arkansas Tech University.
Didway is “double-trouble” with a powerful bat along with being the ace of the Pirates staff on the mound. A Texas Rangers fan, Didway, a right-handed throwing senior went 8-0 on the mound with a 1.98 ERA while proving his the power to go deep as well as advancing runners into scoring position with a .402 batting average including 41 RBIs. Connor Mangham – Pocola 6-1 215 SR - LHP/1B Tanner Francis – Pocola 5-9 160 SR - Catcher/Inf The Pocola Indians have plenty of firepower when Mangham takes the hill with Francis as his battery mate. With command of his pitches, Mangham keeps opposing batters guessing at the plate recording 75 strikeouts in only 39 innings on the bump using a “heater” to overpower hitters. Mangham will be the “horse” for the Indians success this spring. A fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, the crafty left-hander studies the form of LA Dodgers lefty Clayton Kershaw. Mangham has signed to play baseball at Connors State.
Described as a “wall behind the plate”, Francis strong arm keeps runners fearful to run. Hitting in the two hole, Francis .590 onbase percentage and .412 batting average gave the Indians a scoring threat with speed on the base path. A fan of the NY Yankees, Francis models his game after major league All-Star catcher Yadier Molina. In addition to baseball, he enjoys playing a guitar in his spare time. A leader in the dugout, Francis has signed a baseball college letter of intent with Carl Albert State College. Seth Sandlin – Stigler 6-1 215 SR - RHP/CF/SS Austan Drewry – Stigler 6-3 240 SR - RHP/1B Heroes on the football field, the physical and mental approach of Sandlin and Drewry to the diamond gives Panthers fans plenty to cheer about this spring. Sandlin returns as the ace of the pitching staff after recording 68 strikeouts in 42 innings while providing muscle at the plate where he collected 34 RBIs with a .424 batting average. Sandlin, who signed a baseball letter of intent with Carl Albert State College, likes the style Albert Pujols as the best hitter in the major leagues.
Drewry is a double threat in Stigler’s lineup with a productive bat as well as a controlled delivery when pitching. Defense is also a cherished talent of Drewry who still smiles about doubling up on Red Oak while attempting a suicide bunt. Drewry likes Stigler’s school color of red; after all, his favorite major league team has always been the St. Louis Cardinals. Tristan Johnson – Fort Gibson 6-0 220 JR - 3B/SS/P Bubba Stone – Fort Gibson 5-11 170 SR - Shortstop Expectations are high at the Fort as the Tigers combination of skill will include the duo Johnson and Stone. Johnson stepped into the lineup a year ago with his solid defensive skills at third base while swinging a dependable bat with a .476 average including 12 doubles while proving he can chase it up to the plate while on the mound with his near 90-mph fastball.
Stone credits his “full-throttle” style of play at shortstop to Boston Red Sox standout Dustin Pedroia. A volunteer firefighter and avid hunter, Stone extinguished opponents’ rally efforts with his range at shortstop while lighting a fire in the Tigers’ batting order averaging .350 including nine doubles. Houston Glad – Tahlequah 5-11 170 SR - RHP/2B Austin Riley – Tahlequah 5-8 180 SR - Catcher The Tigers hopes for success include the 1-2 combination of Gladd and Austin Riley. The right-handed ace of the Tahlequah staff, Gladd has plenty of velocity on his favorite pitch, “the gasser”, that produced 69 strikeouts in 46 innings pitched. Having signed to play college baseball at Eastern State College in Wilburton, Gladd models his approach to baseball like that of his favorite player, Chipper Jones, and pitching favorite Craig Kimbrel of the Atlanta Braves.
After starting at second base the past two seasons in the Tigers’ infield, Riley will don the catching gear as the battery mate for Gladd and other Tahlequah pitchers. The senior’s consistent performance at the plate makes for a tough out in the order. Riley, whose favorite player is Boston Red Sox star Dustin Pedroia, prefers the team tradition of winning pennants of the New York Yankees. MARCH 2014 | VYPEOK.COM

Wyat Grooms – Wagoner 5-10 200 SR - RHP/1B/3B Tyler Milligan – Wagoner 5-9 65 SR - RHP/SS The Bulldogs’ promise for success will include the talents of Grooms and newcomer to the 2014 lineup in Milligan. Grooms was the workhorse for Wagoner a year ago with a difficult to retire performance at the plate, who hit for a .352 batting average. When on the hill, Grooms provides plenty of pop in his pitches keeping batters off balance. A lifetime St. Louis Cardinals fan, Grooms is a bit superstitious; admitting his routine of putting on his uniform in the same order every game.
Milligan joins the Wagoner lineup after his family moved from Denver, CO where he was a starting pitcher for Cherry Creek High School on the state championship team as a sophomore Earning All-State honors in Colorado last year, Milligan was 7-1 on the mound with a 1.33 ERA and will play shortstop when not getting the starting nod on the mound. A fan of the New York Yankees, Milligan’s baseball role model is Derek Jeter. Harris Jones – Muskogee 5-11 195 SR - 1st Base/RHP Dakota Morse – Muskogee 6-1 190 SR - 3rd Base/RHP The Roughers’ baseball by committee approach for wins will rely upon the proven talents of Harris Jones and Dakota Morse. Whether spending his efforts on the mound or providing reliable fielding skills at first base, Jones brings big play abilities including timely hits that generated a .330 average last year. Jones was also a qualifier for the Class 6A state golf championships. After winning a World Series title in the youth leagues, Jones welcomes the opportunity to “grind” and lead the Roughers into the postseason.
“Morse Code” for the Roughers will include the sticky-glove play at third base while also taking the hill to provide added depth in the pitching rotation. Morse, who also was part of a youth league World Series in Tennessee, admits he closely watches the “pre-step” motion of Boston’s Dustin Pedroia to improve his play. Morse will once again be asked to deliver clutch hits after producing a .334 average last year. Caleb Knight – Checotah 5-10 210 SR - Catcher
Jack Christian – Checotah 6-0 165 JR - RHP/SS The Wildcats’ expectations for chasing a state title include an experienced lineup led by Caleb Knight and Jack Christian. Like his pro player favorite Yadier Molina, Knight, who led Checotah’s football playoff dreams at quarterback, brings his rifle arm delivery behind the plate to keep runners in check. After smacking five home runs while hitting .452 last season, Knight gives the Wildcats a solid bat at the plate.
Christian, a junior, will be the ace of the pitching rotation this spring. The talented right hander kept opposing hitters guessing with his selection of pitches while recording a 5-1 record, 2.60 ERA, and 45 strikeouts in 40 innings last year. A student of the game, Christian’s favorite player is Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan.

Hunter Collins Checotah High School Victory happens when ten thousand hours of training meets one moment of opportunity. Those words may best describe the accomplishment of Checotah High School junior, Hunter Collins. In the school’s first year of wrestling on the varsity level, Collins accomplished one of the hardest feats to achieve by becoming Wildcats first-ever wrestler to qualify for the state championship wrestling tournament. “It’s every kid’s dream to make that stage,” said Chris Buckmaster, head wrestling coach for the Wildcats. “Hunter’s achievement of state is a major step forward for him as well as our wrestling program at Checotah. It’s created excitement throughout our school and the town.” Competing in the 220-pound weight class, Collins recorded a 30-7 season mark combining his skills to use a hybrid-style including power and technique

to each match. After a 4th place finish at regionals, Collins won his second match of three at state with a fall in 2nd period. “Hunter’s work ethic and ability to accept coaching was a major difference,” said Buckmaster. “His training regimen demands commitment. Hunter listens to criticism and instruction and uses it to his benefit in every match.” A three sport standout, including football and baseball in addition to wrestling, Collins is a champion in the classroom having already recorded an ACT score of 29. “Hunter is already planning and training for 2015,” said Buckmaster. “His goal is to stand on top of the medal stand next year.” As the school’s first ever wrestling state qualifier, Hunter Collins will always be a champion for the Checotah Wildcats.
