Top 10 Stori
We give you the top 10 things to look for this spring in Tulsa area high school athletics. 1. Can Bishop Kelley win a 6A baseball title? The Comets have won five state titles in baseball the last of which coming in 2011 when they knocked off Deer Creek in the 5A title game. Last year the Comets were the 6A runner-up and the team brings back a good chunk of players this year to make another run at the title that just escaped them last year. 2. Can someone unseat the Union girls from the top of the Class 6A golf standings? The Lady Redskins have won the last four state titles but were challenged last year by Broken Arrow. Union brings back some experience this year but several teams will be zeroing in on the target on the Lady Redskins’ back. 3. Will Preston Crawford win the 6A boys golf title?
Last season Crawford placed seventh in the state with a two-day total of 234. This year Crawford, a University of Tulsa commit, is gunning for the number
one spot in the state all while hoping to lead Jenks to a team championship. 4. Will an East side team win the Class 6A slow-pitch state title?
Since Jenks won the title in 2011 the two sides of the state have alternated where the trophy resides. Last year Southmoore won the title making 2015 an East side year if the trend continues. 5. Can the Jenks duo of Elliott Kulkin and Tommy Dial continue their dominance in the pole vault?
Last year Kulkin won the Class 6A girls pole vault title while Dial claimed the Class 6A boys title. Dial broke the Class 6A boys state record in the process and Kulkin was just short of the 6A girls state record in her championship win. The question may not be will they win but what will the records be after they do. 6. Can the Glenpool track teams sweep Class 5A?
Last year both the boys and girls track teams from Glenpool finished among the top five teams in Class 5A. It will be a tough road but this year the goal for both Glenpool teams is a team title. 7. Will the Verdigris girls soccer team repeat as Class 4A state champions?
Last season the Lady Cardinals won the Class 4A state title with a 14-3 record and capped the season with a 14-game win streak. This year Verdigris again started 0-3 but have since won two games in a row…. 8. Will Bishop Kelley girls soccer begin another era of dominance?

From 1999 through 2008 Bishop Kelley girls soccer was the state champion. Then in 2009 that streak was snapped. After that the Lady Comets ran off four more titles in a row. Last season Kelley was once again kept
Lexy Dobson-Union from a championship, will that mean yet another run of titles for the tradition-rich program?
9. Can Metro Christian’s Jackson Fine repeat as the Class 5A boys state tennis champion? Last spring Fine burst onto the scene and won the No. 1 singles division as a sophomore. This year Fine will have a target on his back but after already proving he can play with the best Fine won’t be intimidated as he looks to repeat as champion. 10. Spring football starts.
That’s right football fans it’s that time of the year again. Area teams will begin their work in the weight room and on the field in spring practice to get ready for next fall. Teams from such as Jenks and Bixby are working on their plans of repeating as a state champion while programs such as Owasso, Broken Arrow, Booker T. Washington and many more are all working to reach the top of the mountain.

How long have you been involved with FCA? I've been involved with FCA since my sophomore year.
Who influenced you to join? I have an older sister that was very active in athletics and FCA. My parents and some coaches have also encouraged my participation.
How has FCA made an impact in your life on and off the field? FCA provides a great opportunity in a school setting to let others know that my faith and values are important. Christians can have a great time without acting like the world. M.O.B. nights are a lot of fun - I enjoy speaking to younger kids about FCA & why it's important to be involved.
How have your beliefs helped you as an athlete? Having faith in Jesus takes the pressure off to perform. I know what He's done for me. I just want to honor Him with the gifts He's given me.
What is your favorite Bible verse and why? John 3:30. He must increase and I must decrease. Pride comes before the fall. When God is BIG & I am small - He can do great things. Just remember, it's always 3:30.

Bishop Kelley Soccer: Comets Gearing Up For Playoffs
Girls: Young Lady Comets Seeking Experience
Boys: Comets Look to Take Next Step
Coach Troy Tokarchik and the Lady Comets will enter the 2015 season without their best player. Junior Audra Keeling tore her ACL last year as a sophomore. While she was preparing for this season, she re-tore the ACL. With her out, Tokarchik will be searching for somebody to step up and replace her. He has a young roster, so finding an immediate replacement will be challenging. However, Tokarchik’s seniors and underclassmen are hungry for the opportunity to pick up their fallen teammate. With Keeling out, sophomore Ellie Chapple is one of the leading candidates to lead the Lady Comets this season. Seniors Kalynne Chapman and Morgan Strickland will absorb much of the leadership role.
The Bishop Kelley Comets came up just short of the Class 6A playoffs last season. This is not because of a lack talent, but more because of the depth of the field in 6A. One goal was the difference in all of Bishop Kelley’s losses during its 2014 campaign. Coach Phil Barkley is excited for the opportunity to get the Comets back to the playoffs.
The Lady Comets are an extremely young team, and each game will be a valuable experience. So far this season, Bishop Kelley has a 4-2 record. Its only losses have come against Class 6A powerhouse Union and to Har-Ber High School from Arkansas. Last season, the Lady Comets were ousted in the second round of the playoffs. Union defeated them 4-1 before losing in the next round to Edmond Memorial. With a young roster, coach Tokarchik hopes he can lead the Lady Comets back to the 6A playoffs. As the soccer season rolls on through April and May, keep an eye out for Bishop Kelley. 12

“This year’s group is looking to take the next step,” Barkley said. “We will finish games and get back to the playoffs where Bishop Kelley belongs. It’s a team attitude and environment in 2015.”
This year’s Bishop Kelley team features some of the best soccer players in Class 6A. They have a deep roster, and are poised for a deep playoff run. Senior Derek Gonzalez is one of three team captains for coach Barkley. Gonzalez faced some injuries during his junior season, but he is healthy this season and ready to make an impact. His speed and scoring ability are top
notch. Fellow senior Spencer McArthur is a defensive specialist. He has the ability to shut down the opponent’s top player. Junior Hayden Ashley is a multi-sport athlete at Bishop Kelley. As a result, he has multiple skill sets he can take advantage of. He was Barkley’s third leading scorer last season. Those are just the upperclassmen. His sophomores are some of the best upcoming soccer players around. Ben Barkley, who faced injuries throughout his freshman season, is the top regional player with his competitive club team. Last season, he led the Comets in assists. This season, he will be asked to find the net more. Sophomore Andres Gonzalez was the 2014 Bishop Kelley Freshman of the Year. He has the ability to control the midfield, and can score goals when he is called upon. The list goes on for the Comets. They have an opportunity to challenge the best of the best in Class 6A. When playoff time rolls around, expect the Bishop Kelley Comets to be playing their best soccer.

Lady Chieftains Aiming for Playoffs
Ten games into the 2015 season, the Sapulpa Lady Chieftains find themselves with a 5-5 record. All of their losses have come to teams with winning records. Their have a goal differential of plus four. They’ve scored 25 goals, while giving up 21. They have squared off against some of the tougher teams in Class 6A. However, they are playing well as of late. The Lady Chieftains are currently on a two game winning streak. Coach Lori Arundell has her team fighting to get back to the playoffs. With three games left in the season, Arundell’s team will have the opportunity to beat some good teams, such as Union and Booker T. Washington. It will be good experience for her players as they try to push for a playoff spot. Fortunately for Arundell, she has a deep roster loaded with juniors and seniors.
Many of her players participate in club soccer as well, giving them extra experience. Senior Maci Killman plays for the 97’ PLW TSC Hurricane. She is one of the only seniors for the Lady Chieftains who plays club soccer. Arundell has three juniors who participate in club soccer. Kelsey Gordon, Morgan Medina and Stephanie Prescott all play for a different club teams. Arundell has talented and experienced players, and she hopes the Lady Chief-

Metro Christian Soccer Patriots Excited to Get Ball Rolling
Photo By In The Zone Photography www.inthezonephoto.com Metro Christian coach AJ Klerekoper is excited to get back onto the soccer field after his team was defeated in the first round of the playoffs last season. The Patriots lost a close game to East Central, who ended up making it to the semifinals before losing. Making it to the playoffs is an accomplishment in itself, but Klerekoper wants to take the next step this season. Metro Christian’s roster will feature many new faces throughout the 2015 campaign. “Even after losing 12 seniors from last year,” Klerekoper said. “We still like our chances in competing for a district title this year. We have a very strong junior class, and all the boys are excited to get the season going. We need a few guys to step into bigger roles than they have in the past, but if we get that, we will be a very competitive 5A team in 2015.”

Luke Bailey is one of the few seniors on the roster. He benefitted from the large senior class from last year before they departed. He will bring leadership and experience to the team. Tyler LaCourse, Riley Mayes and Miles Razdan are just a few juniors among a loaded class. These juniors will have an opportunity to do something special if they are able to lead Metro Christian back to the state tournament. So far this season, the Patriots are on the right track to getting back to the playoffs. They have a 4-2 record, and are 4-0 at home. Both of their losses came against teams in Class 6A. The Patriots have scored 13 goals, while only giving up 7. They have two shutouts, but have also been shutout in both of their losses. It has been a balanced season for Metro Christian. Clint Maxey - Jenks Baseball Senior Clint Maxey normally occupies left field for the Jenks Trojan baseball team. Unfortunately for Maxey and the Trojans, he suffered a torn ACL in the offseason and will miss the season. Now, Maxey is focusing his efforts to the classroom, where he is seeing his hard work pay off. Maxey boasts a 3.5 GPA, and he plans to attend the University of Oklahoma once he graduates from Jenks. He is taking AP Statistics, which is one of his favorite classes.
“I enjoy this subject the most because I enjoy learning how to get results with real life problems, Maxey said.
Although he will miss this baseball season, he has worked hard in the classroom to prepare himself for college. For his dedication to becoming a better student, Clint Maxey is the Jenks Academic Athlete of the Month.

Jenks Boys Golf
Jenks Golfers Garrett Jelley and Preston Crawford give you an insider’s look at the Trojans’ golf program. ing a long one gives me a big momentum boost. Crawford: Long putt.
VYPE: How much time a week do you spend working on your game? Jelley: I try to get out to the course everyday. In the summer, I'll spend all day out there working on my game and having fun with my friends. Crawford: On average 25-30 hours.
VYPE: What is the best thing about playing golf for the Jenks Trojans?
Jelley: At Jenks, every sports team is expected to be the best in the state. It's the whole school's mindset and it's really cool being a part of such a great athletics program. Not to mention the fantastic golf tradition we have here. Crawford: Playing for coach Wilcoxen.
Preston Crawford VYPE: What are your goals for this season? Jelley: First and foremost I want to bring a team state championship back to Jenks. That's something that hasn't been done in a long time here. That's my No. 1 goal this year, but in order to do that I have to take care of business my self and play to the best of my ability in each tournament. Crawford: To win as much as possible.
VYPE: What club in your bag do you feel like you never miss with?
Jelley: I'd have to say my pitching wedge. When I'm swinging well, there's no other club I'd rather have in my hands. Crawford: My 7 iron.
VYPE: Favorite pro golfer?
Jelley: Rickie Fowler is probably my favorite. I'm a little biased because he went to Oklahoma State and that's where my brother, Brendon, currently plays. Crawford: Adam Scott.
VYPE: What’s a better feeling: ripping a drive straight down the fairway or sinking a long putt?
Jelley: No doubt, seeing a long putt go in is the best feeling in golf. Everybody expects to make the short ones, but mak20

Jenks Baseball
The Trojans made it to the Class 6A semifinals last year and are looking for big success this year despite a young roster.
Barrett Loseke In 2014 the Jenks Trojans baseball team finished the year 34-7 after a loss in the Class 6A semifinals to eventual state champ Stillwater. Coming into this season, fans in Jenks knew that it would be tough to get back to the state tournament after losing 15 seniors off last year’s team.
Tough, but not impossible. The Trojans did
return key players such as Barrett Loseke, who went 5-0 last year on the mound with a 2.00 ERA. Other key players on this year’s squad who saw time last year are seniors Nick Papineau and Chase Burgess. Other seniors such as Jesse Keys, Andrew Miller and Jake Pattinson will also be expected to step up in a big way this year. Junior Nicky Woodley and sophomore Brett Standlee are other players who head coach Danny Morgan is looking toward for big numbers this year. So far this year the young Trojans have navigated a rocky road that most youthful teams are forced to travel. After opening the year 4-0 with key wins over Bishop Kelley and Booker T. Washington, the Trojans dropped three-straight games at a tournament in Arizona. Jenks responded
to those losses with four wins in a row to improve to 8-3 but have since lost two out of three and now sit at 9-5 on the season headed into the month of April.
Looking forward the Trojans will try to traverse a difficult district schedule that will include the likes of Owasso, Stillwater and Norman. If Jenks can manage to pick up wins in such a challenging district expect the Trojans to be very prepared once the postseason rolls around and a team that very few will want to line up against.

Maggie Hembree
Jenks volleyball player Maggie Hembree competes on the court as well as the classroom. Jenks sophomore Maggie Hembree is a member of the Lady Trojans volleyball team and also plays for ClubONE in the offseason. As a powerful middle hitter the future is bright for Hembree who will be a key contributor for the Lady Trojans next year as they look to defend their Class 6A state title. Outside of volleyball however Hembree is also a very good student and always looking to get better in the classroom. Last summer, Hembree began attending Mathnasium because she has always had
a love of Math and wanted to improve her skills as she prepared for the ACT.
After high school Hembree said she wants to earn her college degree but hasn’t narrowed things down to one school yet, in part due to the fact that she is still deciding whether she will continue her volleyball career at the next level. For her effort to improve her skills on the volleyball court and in the classroom, Maggie Hembree is the Mathnasium Athlete of the Month.

Michelle Sheppard Broken Arrow High School Last season Broken Arrow’s Michelle Sheppard qualified for the state meet in both the 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles but just missed out on the podium in both events. This season as a senior Sheppard has already experienced a good deal of success and reached the podium multiple times. At her home meet in Broken Arrow Sheppard dominated both events and took home a gold medal for each with times of 16.70 and 49.08 respectively. If the early season results are any indication fans can expect to see Sheppard on that podium at the state meet in May. For her continued dedication to improving her craft Michelle Sheppard is the Mazzio’s Female Athlete of the Month.
Malik Givens Booker T. Washington Last season Malik Givens turned in a big performance at the Class 6A state track meet. As an individual, Givens placed fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.93. Givens also ran on the 4x100-meter relay team that topped the podium and the 4x200-meter relay team that finished in second place last year at state. This year Givens has already turned in a big performance at the Bulldog Invitational in Okmulgee. The senior took home first place in the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash with times of 10.82 and 22.32 respectively. After he graduates high school Givens plans to play football at Drake University but for now he is supremely focused on helping the Hornets track team to a title along with adding even more hardware to his personal trophy case. Owasso Soccer
Lady Rams Gear Up for Title Chase
Owasso Seniors Coach Sam Bowers is returning all 11 of his starters back to a team that has a total of 14 seniors. Those numbers are impressive alone. Coupled with the fact that Bowers lost only three athletes to graduation, those numbers are staggering. Most of his athletes have started three or four years, while the rest have had significant playing time. This will be one of the deepest squads in Class 6A. Bowers spoke volumes about his student-athletes.

“This is really a great bunch of kids and they are a blessing to coach,” Bowers said. “They are talented but they are even better people. As a coach you dream about having a group of kids like this and you simply sit back and enjoy the ride.”
Last season, the Lady Rams finished with an 11-3 record while scoring 59 goals and only allowing seven. They had 11 shutouts. They had a tough draw in the first round of the playoffs where they faced Jenks, one of the toughest teams in 6A, and lost 2-1. This season, they are hoping to build off their success and go even farther. Bowers’ roster is loaded with talented
players. Junior Player of the Year and team captain Paige Patterson is back for her senior season and she will be one of the premier girls soccer players in the state. UCO signee Camrie Hurst scored 11 goals and three assists last season, and she is seeking to boost those numbers this season. Goalkeeper Hannah Warner started for Owasso as a freshman. Now, the early Oklahoma State commit, who finished with 49 saves and 11 shutouts last season, will look to repeat her success from last year. This is just the tip of the iceberg for Owasso.
So far this season, the Lady Rams are 9-0 and have allowed only five goals. Their title chase is well under way. Considering the amount of talented soccer players on the roster, the Lady Rams should be on the short list of teams that have a chance to win the 6A title. As the soccer season rolls on, keep an eye for coach Bowers and the Lady Rams.
Catoosa Golf Q&A 4A this year. Mallory can drive the ball as far as anyone. She is an "A" student and always fun to have around,” said coach Martray. A fouryear starter, Jackson is all business on the golf course, but she took a few minutes out of her busy schedule to answer a few questions before her next round. VYPE: What age did you start playing golf and how influenced you to play?
Head coach Tony Martray has three seniors on the roster that bring leadership and composure to the course. “Mallory Jackson has improved each year and if she plays well she could be one of the top players in Class
Jackson: My dad. He influenced me to start playing golf around the age of 10.
VYPE: As a senior, what's been your favorite memory playing golf at Catoosa? Jackson: My favorite memory was all of us going to a golf tournament and coach Martray driving down the
wrong side of the road.
VYPE: Of the three seniors, who would win a putting contest and who would win a longest drive contest? Jackson: I think Hannah (Sipe) would win the putting contest, and I would win the longest drive contest.
VYPE: What's one thing you want to do before graduation this year? Jackson: I want my team to win regionals and place at state.
Mallory is joined by fellow seniors Hannah Sipe and Cheyenne Brown. All three are capable of having great seasons and give the Lady Indians three real threats to win regional’s and place at state. Other team members include junior Morgan Tracy and sophomores Casey Henneman and Ammariah Berry.

A Road Well Traveled
Southern Nazarene University graduate assistant, and Texas native, Kelsie Dutton has found a home in Bethany. Growing up in Texas as the daughter of a coach Kelsie Duttton says she always knew she wanted to be a coach.
“My dad is a high school boys basketball coach. I guess coaching is in my blood. When I was young, after school I would walk over to the gym everyday and watch my dad run practice. I always wanted to be like him,” Dutton said.
That longing to follow in her father’s footstep manifested early on according to Dutton. “I knew from a very young age that I was going to be a coach. While most kids were coloring in coloring books, I was coming up with plays on my dad's marker board,” Dutton said. “I always had a high basketball IQ and that came from being able to talk to my dad about the game and truly learning it

from a coaches perspective. I often saw former players come up to my dad and tell him about his influence on their lives and that really solidified for me that I wanted to become a coach. I wanted to impact the lives of my players.”
Dutton was also a standout player at Anton High School in Anton Texas where she grew up. As a high school senior Dutton averaged 14.8 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. Dutton then went on to play two years at Hill College in Hillsboro Texas and was selected as an all-conference honorable mention player in both years along with becoming an academic All-American. After her time at Hill College Dutton transferred to Mid-American Christian University in Oklahoma City. At MACU, Dutton continued to excel in academics as she became a Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete and a NCCAA Scholar Athlete. Dutton graduated with a degree in Business Administration and English from MACU then came to Southern
Nazarene University as a graduate assistant and enrolled in the school’s Sports Management masters degree program.
When asked what attracted her to SNU Dutton said it was a multitude of factors.
“I had just spent the previous two years in OKC playing at Mid-America Christian University and I fell in love with the area. I made some great friends that are still around and I was more than happy to stay in the area for another couple of years,” Dutton said. “I also just came from a Christian institution and that was a big draw for me with SNU. The reputation of the women's program and its championship culture was also a very big draw.” Looking ahead Dutton said she hopes to continue coaching and is excited about the opportunities her masters degree will provide her.
“I would love to stay in coaching after I earn my masters. Having my masters will also be a great benefit for me if I choose to become an athletic director later on in my life. I just know that whatever I do, I want it to be centered around sports.”

Girls Golf Ryon Stirling’s team is small this year with just two returning seniors and a freshman. Senior captain Marcela Pierre started the year strong winning the Titan Invitational at Forest Ridge in a scorecard playoff. (She ended last season with a third place finish at the SPC in Houston and honorable mention honors for the AllMetro girls golf roster). The other senior, Lily Fears and her sister Sophie Fears placed 8th and 7th, respectively. As a team they managed a third place finish at Forest Ridge in a limited field. While the season is young, the Dutch look to have a good showing at the upcoming local tournaments as well as SPC in late April.
Boys Golf
The Holland Hall boys golf team started the season strong. They won their first tournament of the year, shooting a total of 310 at the Ponca City Invitational against mostly 5A and 6A schools. Senior Arjun Reddy, a Drake University golf commit, won the tournament shooting a 73. Senior Sajan Patel and junior Jake Van Hooser tied for third, each shooting a 78. Sophomore Cooper Williamson shot 81 and freshman Bobby Hughes shot 87. The Dutch should be in the mix for an SPC title this year. Last year they came in 4th place, and with everyone returning, they should make it very interesting according to coach Brian Underwood.
Boys Tennis
Karen Holmes is coaching this boys tennis team this season. The team has had to fight some weather issues in regards to early tournaments, but have started out well in conference defeating All Saints and Trinity Valley, both 4-1. Senior leaders are Evan Shrestha & Manas Kommareddi. Shrestha is the Dutch’s number

one player and a true team leader, as well as a smart player. He knows how to work points and use his varied shot selection skills to win matches. Kommareddi is injured, so coach Holmes is not sure how he will fit in the line-up at this time.
Other returning lettermen are junior Tyler Newton, junior Will Coates and sophomore Ben Truong. The other players in the top seven are freshman Graham Nelson, senior Trey Henderson, and senior Vivek Madala. “My hope this season is that we compete well and finish somewhere in the top 6 teams in our SPC North Zone and earn a place at the conference tournament,” said Holmes.
Baseball
Holland Hall Baseball is off to a great start this season. They began the season with a record of 12-3 and 3-2 in SPC play. According to coach Robinson, the team has a “no quit attitude” with two big come from behind wins in the seventh inning against Tulsa Memorial and Casica Hall. The Dutch are looking to be a competitor for the SPC conference championship in Dallas at the end of April. They are lead by senior captains Slater Springman and Nick Holm. Other notable senior leaders are University of Kansas signee Jackson Goddard and Brooks Raguse. Springman is currently leading the team in every offensive category with a season batting average of .500. Goddard is a great asset on the mound, starting the season out with a 4-0 record, including 38 strikeouts in 27 innings of work and an ERA of 0.00.
With only three returning starters from the very successful 2014 season, the Dutch are relying on three sophomores and a freshman in the starting lineup.
Softball Coach Stacey Walkingstick has a very young team this season, losing much of last years 14-4 squad to graduation. The Dutch have ten freshmen on the roster along with one sophomore, one junior and one senior. The upperclassmen are Senior Natalie Miller and Junior Kelsey Marr. They started off one and one in SPC play.
Proposed OSSAA Move
Holland Hall has officially applied for membership with the OSSAA. The Dutch will fulfill their SPC commitment for one more year before joining the OSSAA for 2016-2017 school year. Holland Hall first joined the SPC in 1967 and has seen the conference grow to 19 independent schools. Below are a few of the key factors that led to Holland Hall seeking membership with the OSSAA:
• A significant increase in missed academic days due to SPC travel compared to past years • Significantly increased travel demands for students and coaches and the resulting increase in stress for students • Increase in size of upper school student population of several SPC schools creating potentially unhealthy competitive dynamics for smaller schools like Holland Hall • The importance of the out-of-state travel experience can be maintained while participating in the OSSAA • Opportunities in the OSSAA for Holland Hall to compete for statewide recognition in several academic and arts activities • Investigations of other possibilities found OSSAA to be the best option for Holland Hall • Opportunities to be better known in Tulsa and to engage with the community
