Enrollment: 365
Schedule: Sept. 5 – vs. NOAH Sept. 12 – vs. OCS Sept. 19 – at Claremore Sequoyah Sept. 26 – at Stilwell Oct. 3 – at Poteau Oct. 10 – vs. Muldrow Oct. 16 – at Fort Gibson Oct. 24 – vs. Broken Bow Oct. 31 – at Tulsa Central Nov. 7 – vs. Sallisaw
Quick Hits: The Patriots will compete in their highest classification ever when they move up to 4A-4 in 2014. Metro is currently riding a streak of five consecutive double-digit winning seasons.
Metro will open the season against NOAH. This will be the ninth meeting between the teams with Metro winning in all but the 2010 game. The Patriots and OCS Saints have developed a good rivalry in recent years. Metro will host OCS in week three. The Patriots have won three of the four all-time meetings with three of the four being decided by a field goal or less. Last 5 Years: 2013 - 11-1 2012 – 10-3 2011 – 12-1 2010 – 10-4 2009 – 10-1

Abe Anderson OFFENSE After a run in the playoffs last season, Metro Christian has their eyes on a gold ball. The Patriots move up a class to 4A into a tough district. A good nucleus of players return from last year’s team who made it to the second round after an undefeated regular season. The Patriots run a rare two-quarterback system. The two quarterbacks have worked out tremendously combining for over 2,500 passing yards last season. Abe Anderson (6-3, 215, Jr.) led the offense in passing yards throwing for 1,420 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions. The spread offense ran like a well-oiled machine when Alex Schmitz (5-10, 175, Sr.) rotated in. Schmitz threw for 1,243 yards and 13 touchdowns for the Patriots. The two quarterbacks have a ton of help around them at tail back and wide receiver. Jake Koenig (5-11, 185, Jr.) pulled in 48 receptions for 978 yards, and 10 touchdowns last season. Koenig will be the quarterback’s biggest target, but he is not alone. Eyan Graybill (6-2, 195, Sr.) will have a bigger role catching the football this season after hauling in 24 receptions for 384 yards and 5 touchdowns. The Patriots like to spread the ball around including to running back Brody Wagner (5-10, 190, Sr.). The offense for the Patriots will once again be very explosive giving defenses headaches.
Brody Wagner
Eyan Graybill
Jake Koenig DEFENSE Defense is what won Metro Christian games last season. Five starters return on defense for the Patriots. Opponents' offenses hit a brick wall when facing the Patriots. Opponents averaged less than five points per game. Several key players on offense go both ways and are also key cogs on defense. Both quarterbacks return as starters on defense. Anderson logged 116 tackles, an interception, and a touchdown. Schmitz is a lock down corner for the Patriots turning in 19 tackles and an interception last season. Cash Jackson (5-11, 185, Sr.) leads the Patriots creating chaos in the backfield. Jackson posted 70 tackles and 14.5 sacks last season. Max Johnson (6-3, 250, Sr.) teams up with Jackson getting to the quarterback. Johnson is the only returning defensive lineman for Metro Christian. With Johnson’s great experience, he will lead the Patriots on the defensive line heading into the 2014 season. The 3-4 defense will make it tough for opponents to move the ball on Metro Christian. Other players to watch include Cavan Gary, Josh Wolfe and Kyle Hendrix. Cash Jackson

Jenks Trojans
Coach: ALLAN TRIMBLE Enrollment: 3123 Schedule: Sept. 5 – vs. Bixby Sept. 12 – vs. Union @TU Sept. 19 – at Owasso Sept. 26 – vs. Putnam City Oct. 3 – at Norman Oct. 10 – vs. Westmoore Oct. 17 – at Edmond Santa Fe Oct. 24 – at Broken Arrow Oct. 31 – vs. Edmond Memorial Nov. 7 – at Yukon Quick Hits: The Trojans finished undefeated for the first time since the 2001 season. The latest title marked the 11th for head coach Allan Trimble. It was the 4th perfect season for the long time Trojans coach. Jenks has won 23 of its last 25 against 6A-1, Division 1 foes. Both losses came to Broken Arrow. The Trojans have compiled a class 6A best record of 121-12 the past decade, earning two more wins than arch rival Union which has a record of 119-17. Last 5 Years: 2013 - 14-0 2012 – 12-2 2011 – 10-3 2010 – 13-1 2009 – 13-1 OFFENSE In the storied history of Jenks football, not too many quarterbacks have led their team to a perfect 14-0 season, but that’s exactly what quarterback Cooper Nunley (5-10, 180, Jr.) did as a sophomore last year. Nunley proved he can handle the pressure and make good decisions when it matters the most. He returns with four other starters from last year’s state championship squad. Sheldon Barnes (6-3, 330, Jr.) stepped in last year at guard and has worked his way into the starting lineup. Alongside Barnes is Cameron Cremin (6-2, 222, Sr.) a.k.a. Captain Cremin, who brings a physical style coupled with a high level of intelligence on and off the field. Greg Reilly (6-0, 220, Sr.) 12

figures into the starting offensive line unit giving the Trojans more experience up front. Some news faces dot the landscape at receiver. Carson Epps (6-2, 185, Sr.) has the talent to become the team’s go-to guy in the passing game. Also look for Antwon Woods (6-1, 160, Jr.) to contribute at receiver using his speed to find openings in the defense. Running back could be a position shared by a couple of fast, hard-running players in Darwin Thompson (5-8, 173, Sr.) and Kalen McDavid (5-10, 170, Sr.). Thompson has the early nod as the starter, but look for McDavid to push for carries. DEFENSE Jenks will base their defense out of the 3-4 with VYPE Top 100 selectee Marquise Overton (6-2, 295, Sr.) causing all sorts of problems for opponents in the middle of the offensive line. Overton has verbally committed to the University of Oklahoma. Tyler Thomas (6-0, 305, Jr.) can sometimes appear unstoppable when he flips the switch. Anthony Daniels (6-1, 212, Sr.) has developed into a quality player for the defense. Look for Daniels to see time at end. Carter Nelson (5-11, 200, Jr.) should become a household name before the playoffs role around. Nelson takes over the middle linebacker spot and in early practice has looked tremendous. Nelson will lead a fairly inexperienced squad, but what they lack in experience they make up for with ability and want-to. Jacob Sabin (5-11, 188, Sr.) could be one of those players stepping into a starting role this season. The secondary however appears solid with Austin Quillen (5-11, 190, Jr.) at safety and Dillon Stoner (6-1, 185, Jr.) at corner. Quillen made some impressive plays last year and loves to punish receivers attempting to catch balls in his area. Stoner has been steadily improving and could become the team’s best cover corner.
Union Redskins
Coach: KIRK FRIDRICH Enrollment: 4,347 Schedule: Sept. 5 – at Southlake Carroll Sept. 12 – at Jenks Sept. 19 – vs. Broken Arrow Sept. 26 – at PC North Oct. 3 – vs. Norman North Oct. 9 – at Southmoore Oct. 16 – vs. Owasso Oct. 24 – vs. Moore Oct. 31 – at Mustang Nov. 6 – vs. Edmond North Quick Hits:
Mason Farquhar The Redskins will once again venture south of the border when the open up the season against Southlake Carroll High School. The Dragons finished 2013 with a mark of 11-3 losing in the third round of the Texas Class 5A Division-I playoffs. Union has met Jenks in the playoffs for seven consecutive seasons. The Redskins have a 4-3 mark in those seven post season meetings. The Redskins are 53-2 against instate competition other than Jenks the past five seasons. Last 5 Years: 2013 - 11-3 2012 – 10-3 2011 – 13-1 2010 – 13-1 2009 – 13-1 OFFENSE In 2013 the Redskins were just as dominant as they have been over the past two decades finishing the year with an overall record of 11-3 and the Class 6A silver ball after losing in the title game to rival Jenks. Despite losing several very talented players who are now at DI football programs; expectations are once again high for the Redskins this year as they prepare for another run at the 6A title according to head coach Kirk Fridrich. “It will be tough to replace the DI talent that we had a year ago, but we feel very confident in the returning leadership and some
young talent that is stepping up in those roles,” Fridrich said. “There is no question who our leaders will be when we start in the fall, and we will be watching the young guys grow up with a very difficult pre-district schedule.” One of the unquestioned leaders of the Union offense will be quarterback and VYPE Top 100 selection Mason Farquhar (5-9, 195, Sr.) who 2,695 yards and 27 touchdowns as a junior. Farquhar’s top target this year in the passing game will be receiver Will Hamilton (6-2, 205, Sr.) who caught 61 passes last year for 566 yards. Running back Tyler Adkins (5-10, 180, Jr.) ran for 1,347 yards and 20 touchdowns as a sophomore and brings balance to a Union offense capable of knocking opponents out quicker than a superman punch from Chuck Liddell. Union will also have a strong offensive line once again this year led by Dominique Briggs (6-3, 310, Sr.). DEFENSE Operating out of a base 3-4 front the Redskins will have a defense that makes the end zone seem like a geographical oddity to opponents; two weeks from everywhere on the field. With a strong secondary led by VYPE Top 100 selection Robert Thomas (6-0, 195, Sr.) who finished his junior season with 73 tackles four interceptions and two blocked kicks. Jack Alspaugh (510, 170, Sr.) and Brandon Golphn (6-0, 190, Sr.) will also both man spots in the secondary starting at the safety positions. Last season Asplaugh had 83 tackles and three tackles for loss while Golphin added 55 tackles and three tackles for loss of his own. Union will also be strong in their front seven as Chance Wenglewski (6-3, 232, Sr.) starts on the defensive line and Colton King (5-8, 205, Sr.) starts at linebacker. King was the team’s second leading tackler last season making 112 total stops to go along with six tackles for loss and one interception. Wenglewski was a force in his own right making 59 total tackles, six sacks and eight tackles for loss.

Gunner Green Oct. 16 – at Union Oct. 24 – vs. Mustang Oct. 31 – at Edmond North Nov. 7 – vs. Putnam City North Quick Hits: The Rams are coming off their first losing season since finishing 4-6 in 1995. Owasso has a record of 13673 during that time span. The Rams are the only team from Oklahoma to beat district foe Union other than Jenks. Owasso has won two of the last three meetings between the schools. Owasso will be looking for revenge when it meets Norman North in week four. The Timberwolves won the only other meeting between the two teams 49-42 in the 2012 Class 6A semifinals. Last 5 Years: 2013 - 5-6 2012 - 10-3 2011 – 9-4 2010 – 8-5 2009 – 6-5 OFFENSE Owasso heads in to the 2014 season hungry to erase the memory of 2013. 1995. Injuries plagued Owasso last year, eighth year head coach Bill Patterson isn’t making excuses. “Every now and then you’re going to have cycles where you have a lot of injuries,” Patterson said. “That’s probably what happened to us last year. Hopefully this year is a little bit different.” Five starters return on offense led by quarterback Gabe Neph (6-0, 205, Sr.). Neph will have to find a new target at receiver as older brother John Cole Neph graduated last year. Patterson likes what he sees from his quarterback, who will have one year of experience under his belt. “He’s much more sure of himself, much more aware of what’s going on,” Patterson said. Daulton Esmeyer (5-10, 185, Jr.), will join Neph in the backfield as the tailback. Esmeyer will have a solid offensive line to run behind. Justin Ratcliff (6-0, 250, Sr.), anchors the line at center. Joining Ratcliff on the line is Brandon Scott (6-7, 315, Jr.), Scott is a mountain of a man at 6-foot-7. Ratcliff and Scott’s priority is to keep Neph off the ground and break open some holes for Esmeyer. Owasso will throw out several different looks in a multiple formation offense. Patterson wants to see his offense find a balance with the passing and running game. DEFENSE Six starters return on the Rams defense and they have a lot of speed at every position. Leading the defense will be VYPE Top 100 defensive end Michael Anderson (6-4, 240, Sr.). Anderson has a motor that doesn’t slow down.
“He’s worked extremely hard in the weight room,” Patterson said. “He’s made himself a lot stronger and made himself a better athlete. He’s a great competitor, he’s got the size, length and the ability to be a dominant football player for us.” Anderson is one of the top pass rushers in the Tulsa metro area. Along with Anderson, Antonio Cooper (5-11, 265, Sr.), mans that 4-3 defense at nose guard. VYPE Top 100 linebacker Gunner Green (6-1, 215, Sr.) adds a physical presence to the linebacker position. Owasso has a pair of safeties to help replace the losses they suffered last season. Kolton Gariss (6-1, 185, Sr.) and Bo Winters (5-11, 180, Sr.) could see a lot of action this year as Owasso faces schools that have pass first offenses. With the split in 6A football, Owasso will have to hit the road more in 2014 and in the years to come. All the traveling doesn’t bother Patterson. “After coaching at Duncan for 24 years, every team we played was an hour away,” Patterson said. “It’s kind of exciting, we have the opportunity to play new teams and play at places we’ve never been.”
Booker T. Washington Hornets
Coach: MARVIN DANTZLER Enrollment: 1313 Schedule: Sept. 5 – at Midwest City Sept. 12 – vs. Central Sept. 19 – at East Central
Sept. 26 – vs. Ponca City Oct. 3 – at Sapulpa Oct. 9 – vs. Claremore Oct. 16 – at Bartlesville Oct. 24 – vs. Bixby Oct. 31 – at Sand Springs Nov. 7 – vs. Muskogee Quick Hits: The Hornets travel to Midwest City to open the season. The traditional powers last met in the 1996 Class 6A semifinals with the Bombers prevailing 35-6. It will mark the first time Darrell Hall will face the Hornets after guiding them to a state title in 2010. The Hornets play at East Central in week three. Booker T has won five of the last eight meetings between the schools. Booker T. Washington enters the season with a six game winning streak against Bartlesville. The Bruins last beat the Hornets in 1995. They meet in week seven in Bartlesville. Last 5 Years: 2013 - 7-4 2012 – 5-6 2011 – 4-6 2010 – 13-1 2009 – 8-2 OFFENSE The Hornets return eight starters from last year’s team that won seven games, but continued to show improvement as the season came to a close. VYPE Top 100 selectee Cordale Grundy (6-2, 180, Sr.) accounted for nearly 2,700 allpurpose yards and 23 touchdowns on the ground and through the air. Grundy is a next level type player with the supporting cast to take the Hornets to the state finals. Running back Justice Hill (5-10, 175, Jr.) rushed for 776 yards and 10 touchdowns and added 10 receptions for 150 yards. Hill brings a good mix of speed and agility to the backfield. Also look for Deonta Owens (5-9, 180, Sr.) in the backfield for the Hornets. Owens accounted for nearly 1,000 yards and 11 touchdowns last year. Wide receivers Anthony Walker (6-2, 220, Sr.) and Tariq Bitson (62, 190, Jr.) are big targets Grundy will have in his arsenal. Walker is getting looks from Division I schools and Bitson proved to be a big play receiver last year catching 34 balls for 665 yards and five touchdowns. “We return almost every skill player from an offense that averaged right at 35 points a game. We are led by Cordale Grundy and a backfield that features Justice Hill and Deonta Owens,” said Dantzler. DEFENSE A change in scheme will play to the strengths of the Hornets. Going from a 4-3 to a 3-4 may not seem like a big change, but for the Hornets it will mean players
like T.J. Harris (6-2, 228, Sr.) can have a bigger impact on the game from his defensive end position. Alongside Harris is nose guard Jacques Penney (6-2, 315, Sr.). Penney will plug the middle and be the run stopper the Hornets need in that new 3-4 scheme. The secondary is solid with Razhon Hines (5-9, 170, Sr.) and Keenan Reed (5-10, 180, Sr.). Hines and Reed are two athletic players that both picked two passes last year and combine had more than 60 tackles. Another defensive back to watch is Malik Givens (5-9, 175, Sr.) who knocked down 12 passes last year and recorded 17 tackles. “With the veteran nose guard Penney, who missed all of last year with an injury and defensive end combination of T.J. Harris and Jonathon Harris, our new 3-4 scheme has shown immediate improvements,” said Dantzler. Expectations are high for the Hornets, but when are they not? Look for the Hornets to battle for a district title and make a run at a state championship.
Bixby Spartans
Coach: LOREN MONTGOMERY Enrollment: 1414 Schedule: Sept. 5 – at Jenks
Sept. 11 at East Central Sept. 19 – vs. Springdale AR Sept. 26 – vs. Claremore Oct. 3 – at Bartlesville Oct. 10 – vs. Ponca City Oct. 16 – at Sapulpa Oct. 24 – at Booker T. Washington Oct. 31 – vs. Muskogee Nov. 7 – vs. Sand Springs Quick Hits: Since moving to Class 6A in 2010, the Spartans have a record of 18-24 including a pair of playoff appearances. Bixby and Jenks are back to facing off the opening week of the season. The two teams played in the same district the past two seasons after playing each other week one for 14 straight seasons. The Spartans have not defeated the Trojans during that time span. The Spartans meet Sapulpa for the fifth consecutive season in week seven. The teams have split the past four meetings. Last 5 Years: 2013 - 6-4 2012 - 4-7 2011 – 3-7 2010 – 7-4 2009 – 8-4 OFFENSE The Spartans offense returns nine starters from a team that averaged nearly 30 points a game last year. Nic Roller than 1,000 yards, Roller isn’t your typical running back. His power is rarely seen at this level and should help the young quarterback as he settles in to the starting role. That young quarterback is Tanner Griffin. The sophomore played in seven games last year gaining valuable experience he’ll need to become the starter this season. Most of the experience will come from the wide receiver position with four starters returning. Kyle Rhine (6-1, 182, Sr.) is a four-year starter who averaged 125 yards per game last year. Rhine brings leadership and intelligence to the field for coach Montgomery. Rhine scored a 30 on the ACT and is being looked at by several schools at the next level. Also look for J.J. Cantrell (5-11, 188, Sr.) and Blake Cooper (6-1, 184, Sr.). Both can

two more targets in the passing game. “We are very excited about the kids we have coming back. We have some very talented returning starters who are great on and off the field. We are expecting them to develop as great leaders and allow us to have a great season in the inaugural 6A Division II,” said Montgomery. The offensive line is always a key component in Class 6A and leading the way for the Spartans is senior Brandon Dyson (6-1, 243). Dyson with fellow seniors Jordan Johnston and Tyler Womack are a solid trio of players with good experience. If one aspect of the Spartan offense that is sure to be ready for the season opener against Jenks, it’s the offensive line. DEFENSE The defense is led by three-year starter Casey Saied (6-2, 199, Sr.) at linebacker. Saied accounted for 105 tackles and three sacks last year and is expected to have a similar type season. The defense returns five players who started games in the secondary for the Spartans. Cantrell and Blake Cooper will be three-year starters as Cantrell gets the nod at free safety, while Cooper will

play corner. Strong safety Zach Reynolds (6-1, 201, Sr.) had 80 tackles and two interceptions last year and will see time at running back on offense. Justin Williams (5-11, 170, Sr.) will start at corner bringing good experience and a nose for the ball. Last year he recorded 41 tackles and a pick. The defensive line features Austin Grotts (6-3, 254, Sr.) at defensive end. Grotts is describe by coach Montgomery as an “extremely physical defensive end who will get a great pass rush” for the Spartans. Montgomery also points out junior outside linebackers Jared Kerr and Jake Spriggs as two important players he expects to have big impacts on the defense this season. The 6A Division II district I may be the most interesting of the new 6A classification. With Tulsa Washington, Sand Springs, Claremore, Muskogee and Bixby all in the mix for a possible district title. The Spartans do have an upper hand on several district opponents thanks to quality returning starters, depth and a desire from the players and coaches to be the best in the division.
Sand Springs Sandites Coach: DUSTIN KINARD Enrollment:
Matt Mattison 1639 Schedule: Sept. 5 – vs. Tulsa Hale Sept. 12 – vs. Enid Sept. 19 – at Guthrie Sept. 26 – vs. Bartlesville Oct. 3 – at Claremore Oct. 10 – vs. Sapulpa Oct. 16 – at Ponca City Oct. 24 – at Muskogee Oct. 30 – vs. Booker T. Washington Nov. 7 – at Bixby Quick Hits: The Sandites have made the playoffs in back to back seasons. Prior to 2012, Sand Springs had qualified for the post season just once in 14 seasons. Sand Springs and Muskogee meet for the 13th consecutive season in week eight. The Sandites have won the last three games between the schools but Muskogee won all the other contests the past 12 years.

Stillwater drops off the Sand Springs schedule for the first time since 2007. Last 5 Years: 2013 - 6-4 2012 – 8-3 2011 – 3-7 2010 – 1-9 2009 – 5-5 OFFENSE The confidence level is high in Sand Springs for several reasons. With the new 6A split the Sandites feel the playoffs are a must and a run at a state title is possible. Senior quarterback Connor Sitton (5-10, 175) will lead a talented group on offense. Sitton will have a solid offensive line in front of him and their play could be the key for the Sandites. Center Dakota Skaggs (6-1, 250, Sr.) is the foundation of the offensive line. Playing next to Skaggs is Matt Mattison; a 6-foot, 250-pound lineman that has the versatility to play guard or tackle if needed. Mattison and Skaggs are a tough combo, but when you add left tackle Kyler Childers (6-0, 230, Sr.) you give the Sandite line the missing piece of the puzzle. Childers will solidify the offensive line by opening holes in the running game and protecting the backside of Sitton in the passing game. “We will have to wear down our opponents for four quarters,” Kinard said. The offensive line is the key to wearing down opposing defenses. One player looking to benefit from this salty offensive
line is running back Davey Thayer (5-11, 190, Sr.). Thayer brings more than just a running game to the field. He can line up as a wide out or in the slot giving Sitton another option in the passing game. The Sandites will base their offense out of an empty set, using Thayer in multiple positions. “We will base our offense out of an empty set, but we will run multiple formations and have a good mix of run and pass,” said Kinard. The offense returns six starters from last year with a lot of experience at key positions. DEFENSE The defense will have some fresh faces starting on a unit that only returns three starters from last year’s team. But regardless of the new and often younger players stepping into starting roles, the Sandites do have players that are proven and hungry to get the season started. Sophomore Delvin Jordan (6-1, 215) is turning heads in practice. This young defensive end has exactly what you want from a pursuing defensive end. His speed and quickness off the edge should free up other players to make plays. One of those players is linebacker Jacob Taber (6-0, 210, Jr.). Taber is one of four linebackers the Sandites will field in the 3-4 scheme. “We want to be the most physical, in your face team Sand Springs has had,” said Kinard. The aggressive, in your face, physical style of play carries over into the secondary.

Safety Nick Simmons (5-11, 170, Sr.) brings leadership and that physical style of play coach Kinard is looking for from his defense. In this pass-happy Class 6A every team must have a shut down corner and the Sandites believe they have that in junior Jason Cooper (6-1, 180). Cooper has excellent size for a corner with speed to match the best receivers in the district. If Cooper and Simmons can lock up the secondary opponents will have a difficult job moving the ball. Look for new faces to make an impact as the team works to strengthen the linebacker corps and the interior of the defensive line.

Quick Hits: The Chieftans are coming off back to back playoff appearances for the first time since 2001-2002. The last playoff win for Sapulpa came in 2005 when the Chieftans eliminated Jenks 24-21 in the first round. It marked the first win against the Trojans since 1990. Sapulpa opens the season at home against Choctaw. It is the first meeting between the schools since 2001 when the Chieftans blasted the Yellowjackets 62-0. The Chieftains enter the 2014 season with a whole new look at head coach Mike Gottsch reconstructs the offensive unit with four starters off last year’s Class 6A playoff team. The running back tandem of Dae Williams and Austin Smith, who shared carries in 2013, will be the face of the Chieftains offensive game plan. Williams (6-1, 220, Jr.), who totaled 914 yards and scored 13 touchdowns, brings an attacking type runner with speed to stretch short yardage gains into first downs and more. Smith (5-8, 170, Jr.) also has the skill to get added yardage to extend a drive. After playing in a backup role last season, Trey Bilby (5-10, 165, Jr.) takes control of the offense at quarterback. Sapulpa’s passing game will ride the passing skills of Bilby and his favorite receiver Malik Smith (5-9, 180, So.) for highlight reel moments. While the building process for Gottsch will include finding the pieces to the puzzle in the offensive line, the Chieftains will look to three year starter Danny Glenn (6-0, 290, Jr.) as the anchor on the line of scrimmage. “We’re going to have to find our identity,” admits Gottsch, who enters his 5th season as head coach. “Dae and Austin give us the ability to run the football and control the tempo of the game.” DEFENSE The realignment of Class 6A has Sapulpa striving to achieve the playoffs again in 2014. The Chieftains defensive unit must replace eight starters from last season. Among those with proven playmaking abilities will be linebackers Braden Watkins (5-11, 195, Sr.) and Ryan Miles (5-9, 170, Sr.). “Braden and Ryan understand their roles in our defense,” said Gottsch. “Their experience in game situations will be important to solidifying our defensive unit.” Gottsch will look for Jordan Hearon (6-3, 290, Jr.) to create havoc on the line of scrimmage. Experience and playmaking talents return to the Chieftains’ secondary unit including Braden Ward (5-9, 180, Jr.) and Alec Heflin (6-2, 195, Sr.). “Alec and Braden will be the leaders in the secondary while the other gain playing time experience.” The 2014 schedule gives the youthful Chieftains a home opener against Choctaw before encountering three consecutive road trips including Nathan Hale, Lawton and the district opener at Muskogee. Despite the heavy graduation losses resulting in many new names in the Chieftains’ starting lineups, Gottsch admits the success of back-to-back playoff teams will carry over to the 2014 campaign. “We’re young, that’s obvious,”
admits Gottsch. “But the effort of the kids
in the offseason has me excited about our chances to make the playoffs for a third straight year.”
Claremore Zebras
Coach: ROB GILBREATH Enrollment: 1,246 Schedule: Sept. 5 – at Pryor Sept. 12 – vs. Rogers Derek Ark. Sept. 19 – vs. Siloam Springs Ark. Sept. 26 – at Bixby Oct. 3 – vs. Sand Springs Oct. 10 – at Booker T. Washington Oct. 16 – vs. Muskogee Oct. 24 – at Ponca City Oct. 31 – vs. Sapulpa Nov. 7 – at Bartlesville Quick Hits: The Zebras are back in Class 6A after four years in 5A. Claremore made the playoffs in three of the four years in 5A and compiled a mark of 25-19. Claremore and Oologah will not meet for the first time since 1991. With the move up to 6A, long-time rival and perennial district foe Pryor will take the Mustangs place for the season opener. Claremore hosts Siloam Springs, Arkansas in week three. Siloam Springs finished 2013 with a 3-8-1 record and were eliminated from the Arkansas Class 6A playoffs by Pine Bluff. Last 5 Years: 2013 - 7-4 2012 - 10-2 2011 – 4-6 2010 – 4-7 2009 – 5-6 OFFENSE After going 7-3 during the regular season last year the Zebras ran into a buzz saw in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs and finished the year with a 7-4 record after a loss to the Shawnee Wolves. Leading a potent Claremore offense this year will be running back Derrick Reliford (5-7, 200, Sr.) and wide receiver Dustin Basks (5-8, 165, Sr.), both of whom were VYPE Top 100 selections this year. In 2013 Reliford led the Zebras on the ground and rushed for 1,318 yards and 15 touchdowns on 245 carries. Basks meanwhile led the team in receiving with 44 catches for 861 yards and nine touchdowns. Bear Hope (6-1, 215, Sr.) will also be another key player in the Claremore offense getting time at running back where he spelled Reliford and ran for 344 yards and one touchdown on 52 total carries. Special teams will also be a big
Reliford and Dustin Basks strength for the Zebras with Jared Vincent (5-10, 155, Sr.) starting at kicker. In 2013 Vincent was 35 of 38 on point after attempts and seven of 10 on field goals with a long of 43. DEFENSE The Zebras will have a very strong defense this year with defensive lineman Cody Haire (6-2, 245, Sr.) leading the way up front. Last season Haire made 72 total tackles and recorded one sack and will be asked to do even more this fall. At linebacker Hope will team with Kaleb Hinds (6-1, 175, Sr.) to anchor the middle of the defense. In 2013 Hope led the team in tackles with 150 stops and Hinds was third with 79. Hope also had 10 tackles for loss while Hinds added seven of his own. In the secondary it will be up to Basks to lead the way after a 2013 season in which he made 76 total tackles and three interceptions. Basks also recovered four fumbles last season and blocked two field goals making sure to make his presence felt anytime he was on the field. Vincent will also be an unsung hero for the Claremore defense as the team’s punter and kickoff specialist. Last season Vincent averaged 37 yards per punt and also recorded 23 touchbacks on kickoffs, helping the Zebras win the field position battle.

Ryan Martin Bishop Kelley Comets
Coach: J.J. TAPPANA Enrollment: 774 Schedule: Sept. 5 – vs. Edison Sept. 12 – vs. Bishop McGuinness Sept. 19 – vs. Coweta Sept. 26 – at Memorial Oct. 3 – vs. McAlester Oct. 10 – at Shawnee Oct. 16 – vs. Nathan Hale Oct. 24 – vs. Noble Oct. 31 – vs. Skiatook Nov. 7 – at Durant Quick Hits: The Comets have now made the playoffs in 15 consecutive seasons and have finished with a winning record in 12 of those campaigns. The 2009 Comets recorded the best record during that time span at 11-1. Bishop Kelley will face nearby Edison for the first time since 1999 in the season opener. Kelley has won two straight in the series including a 30-7 decision in ‘99. Dating back to 1991, Bishop Kelley and Bishop McGuinness have played twenty times. The Irish own a 12-8 lead in the series including a win in the only post-season meeting of the teams in 2012. Last 5 Years: 2013 - 6-5 2012 - 9-3 2011 – 8-3 2010 – 5-6 2009 – 11-1 OFFENSE Running a multiple formation offensive system the Comets will count on the ability to run the football this year according to head coach JJ Tappana. “We like to run the ball in multiple formations. We have big tailbacks and an explosive three-year starter at quarterback,” Tappana said. Tappana did add that it may take his team a few games to gain valuable experience at the offensive line positions but the Comets will get a big dose of experience from Matt Fleske (6-1, 245, Sr.) to help with bringing along the younger players. At tailback the Comets will look to Jake Percy (6-1, 200, Jr.) and Jack Woolslayer (6-1, 200, Jr.) to 20

spearhead the rushing attack. Ryan Martin (6-2, 190, Sr.) will be the Comets man under center this season and will look to tight end Chase Irwin (6-2, 220, Sr.) as a main target in the passing game. DEFENSE With only four returning starters back the Bishop Kelley defense will be young in a lot of places this year. One bright spot for the Comets however will be their linebackers. That strength could prove to be an even bigger plus considering the Comets will be operating out of a 3-4 defensive front. Phillip Scott (5-10, 185, Jr.) and Matt Smith (6-0, 205, So.) will both play on the inside of that 3-4 scheme while Zac Sheehan (6-2, 225, Jr.) will occupy an outside linebacker spot. In the defensive backfield Hunter Hughes (5-8, 175, Sr.) will offer an experienced and athletic option at strong safety capable of helping in pass coverage or stuffing the run. “We graduated a large senior class and have a lot of places to fill,” Tappana said. “It will be a fun year to watch all the young guys get better and gain a lot of experience for the upcoming years.” One good thing that the youthful Comets roster has to lean on is a schedule chalk full of home games. Bishop Kelley will play seven home games this year with their only road games being played at Memorial, at Shawnee and at Durant.
Memorial Chargers
Coach: RYAN REED Enrollment: 1070 Schedule: Sept. 5 – vs. Central Sept. 12 – vs. Edison Sept. 19 – vs. NOAH Sept. 26 – vs. Bishop Kelley Oct. 3 – at Durant Oct. 10 – vs. Noble Oct. 16 – at Skiatook Oct. 24 – at Shawnee Oct. 31 – vs. Hale Nov. 6 – vs. McAlester Quick Hits: The Chargers enter 2014 coming off back to back winning seasons for the first time since 1990. Memorial opens the season against the Central Braves for the fifth consecutive time. The teams have split the previous four meetings but Memorial has won the last two including a 65-27 win in 2013. The Chargers did not qualify for the post season from 1990 to 2011. Their last playoff win was 7-6 against Enid in the 1988 Class 6A first round. Last 5 Years: 2013 - 6-4 2012 – 6-4 2011 – 3-7
Keyondre Huntley 2010 – 7-4 2009 – 9-3 OFFENSE With memories of last year’s miss of the expected Class 5A playoffs, the Chargers enter the 2014 season on a mission “Hungry and Humble.” And while the offense must replace the statistics of Mikequan Deane and Keith Driver, head coach Ryan Reed is confident in the commitment of his players to achieve their destination of the post-season. “Determined for the playoffs would be an major understatement,” said Reed. Memorial returns six starters to the offensive unit that averaged 41 points per game a year ago. Trevor Boone (6-1, 195, Jr.) who missed most of 2013 due to injury, returns to guide the Chargers attack. “Trevor has no fear,” said Reed noting the confidence and skills of Boone. “He’s got the physical tools to be a special player.” Tabbed as “Mr. Durable,” Keyondre Huntley (5-10, 205, Sr.), who has drawn the eye of college scouts, brings a tough to tackle style at running back where he gained just over 900 yards last season. Isaac Dake (6-4, 215, Sr.), who Reed credits his soft touch hands and disciplined pass route skills, will again be the go-to-guy at receiver. Size and strength will be a plus in the offensive front line with Cody Baker (6-1, 295, Sr.) and Kevin Smith (6-2, 275, Sr.) attacking opposing defenses. “We’re going continue to go nohuddle,” said Reed. “The talents we have on offense give us the ability to be well-balanced which is a perfect fit for our hurry-up style of play.” DEFENSE The experience of an aggressive and talented 3-3 alignment will again create problems for Chargers’ opponents as 10 starters return. The speedy and physical style play of Memorial’s defense will be anchored by middle linebacker Maleek Greenlee (5-11, 205, Sr.), who totaled 133 tackles including seven sacks and two fumble recoveries. A physically gifted athlete that also takes AP classes, Greenlee requires opponents to design schemes to try
to control him. “Maleek leads by example, on and off the field,” said Reed. “And, when the lights come on Friday night, you have to have a scouting report to know where he is on every snap.” Caleb Wellston (6-2, 235, Sr.), who recorded 115 tackles last season will join James Lewis (6-0, 180, Jr.), who had 12 tackles for loss at the other two linebacker positions. Dahquari Royal (5-8, 175, Jr.), who was part of Memorial’s Class 5A state championship basketball squad, returns at cornerback where he assaulted opposing defenses while picking off eight passes. The front three will again feature the play of Isiah Thomas (6-4, 245, So.) at defensive end where the physically gifted athlete notched 15 quarterback sacks along with Isaac Dake, who will return to the opposite side at end. “We’re approaching this year in a humble and hungry mode,” said Reed. “We have a lot to prove.”
Nathan Hale Rangers
Coach: TONY PETERS Enrollment: 1179 Schedule: Sept. 5 – at Sand Springs Sept. 12 – vs. Sapulpa Sept. 18 – vs. Edison Sept. 26 – vs. Skiatook Oct. 3 – at Noble Oct. 10 – vs. Durant Oct. 17 – at Bishop Kelley Oct. 23 – vs. McAlester Oct. 30 – at Memorial Nov. 7 – at Shawnee Quick Hits: The Rangers enter the season burdened by a 15-game losing streak. Their last victory came in week five of 2012 against Skiatook. Hale last made the playoffs in 2009, exiting against McAlester in the first round. Hale’s last playoff victory came in 1979 when the Rangers won the Class 4A state championship beating Midwest City 15-6. Hale and Memorial have played in 14 of the past 16 seasons. The Chargers hold a 10-4 advantage over the Rangers. Last 5 Years: 2013 - 0-10 2012 - 2-8 2011 – 0-9 2010 – 3-7 2009 – 5-6 OFFENSE A quarterback battle should be decided in August, but right now all of the talk is around the running game and Keonte Valintine (5-10, 170, Sr.). Valentine rushed for 432 yards last year and should increase those numbers this season. One
Matt Smith
Bishop Kelley High School Bishop Kelley Comets outside linebacker Matt Smith not only makes plays on the football field, but he also makes his time in the classroom count. Smith’s play between the sidelines has made him a player to watch this season according to Bishop Kelley head football coach JJ Tappana, but Smith is also one to watch off the field as well. Carrying a 4.35 weighted grade point average Smith takes a wealth of advanced placement classes. Some of those honors classes include AP Chemistry, AP Physics 1, AP Physics C, AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, AP Government and AP Macro-Economics. Smith’s favorite honors class however is honors Pre-AP Biology, which is the class Smith counts as his favorite among any class he takes at Bishop Kelley. For his constant dedication to not only being an impact player on the gridiron but also making an impact in the classroom as a dedicated student Matt Smith is the TTCU Male Academic Athlete of the Month.
Ellen Thomas Collinsville High School
Collinsville junior Ellen Thomas burst onto the scene last fall with a ninth place finish at the Class 5A state cross country meet, finishing with a time of 12:47.33. Thomas’ performance at the state meet followed a 10th place finish at the regional meet where she finished with a time of 13:38.85. Overall the two performances helped the Lady Cardinals take second place as a team at the regional meet and third as a team at state. In the spring Thomas again made her competition take note as she finished in fourth place in the 3200-meter run with a time of 12:31.68. With her two-mile time continuing to drop throughout the 2013-2014 school year Thomas is an early favorite to finish in the top five at the state cross country meet this year. In the classroom Thomas carries a 3.6 grade point average and says she really enjoys both Math and Psychology. For her continued dedication to both sports and athletics Thomas is the TTCU Female Academic Athlete of the Month.

wild card is the addition of track star Martin Walton to the team. Walton is expected to come in and add to the running game and possibly the return game. The offensive line is the key to the Rangers having some success this season. Issac Cota (5-11, 250, Jr.) and Daniel Mosley (6-2, 200, Sr.) are two tackles the Rangers will lean on for big holes in the running game and protection for a potentially young quarterback. Dean Ellis (5-10, 220, Sr.) is a versatile lineman that can play center or guard. Braeden Templeton (5-10, 180, Jr.) could be the answer at center if Ellis moves to guard. Templeton is an athletic player with big potential. “Inexperience at quarterback and wide out will pose early challenges. We should have good depth at running back,” said Peters. DEFENSE The defense is an area of concern for coach Peters. “We need to improve our defensive play from the 2013 defense that allowed over 50 points per contest,” said Peters. Several players will go both ways this season as Valentine steps in at corner where he notched 30 tackles, one interception and recovered one fumble. Cota and Ellis will play on the defensive line with Cota at end and Ellis at tackle. Cota had one sack and 13 tackles last year to go with the 11 tackles Ellis recorded. Emmet Spenser (6-2, 210, Sr.) and Sam McKenzie (5-10, 175, Sr.) are two linebackers the Rangers will need to play lights-out this season. Last year McKenzie had 42 tackles and returns as the team leader in that category. The defense does return six starters from last year and with more experience and a renewed desire to get Hale football back on track, the Rangers could have their best season in years.

with two playoff appearances. Skiatook opens the season on the road at Piedmont. It will be the first time the Bulldogs have played an opponent located west of I35 since losing to Clinton 36-7 in the 1998 Class 4A semifinals. Last 5 Years: 2013 - 4-7 2012 – 0-10 2011 – 4-5 2010 – 4-7 2009 – 1-9 OFFENSE Skiatook scorekeeper Mike Mullins could be very busy this year if running back and VYPE Top 100 selection Kyle McLaughlin (5-9, 175, Sr.) has his way. Last year McLaughlin rushed for 2,000 yards and 21 touchdowns on 270 carries and will once again be expected to be the bell cow in the Bulldogs’ offense this season. Another key skill position players in the Skiatook offense this year will be quarterback Cameron Hudson (6-1, 193, Sr.). Hudson, who was injured last season will take over the quarterback duties from Stephen Upton (5-11, 175, So.) who will now transition back to his natural position as a receiver. Upton threw for 575 yards and three touchdowns last year and added another 289 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Another big target in the passing game Hudson will be relying on is flanker Beau Wooden (6-4, 210, So.). All of the Skiatook skill players however will be heavily relying on two offensive linemen Grant Appelberg (6-2, 280, Jr.) and Dylan Thompson (6-1, 215, Sr.) to clear the way this year. Both Appelberg and Thompson will be two-year starters and will be crucial in any offensive success the Bulldogs achieve this year. DEFENSE Running an aggressive style 3-4 defense the Bulldogs have eight starters returning, including five players who made at least 75 tackles last season at their disposal. Linebacker Baylor Jenkins (5-9, 160, Sr.) and safety Gavin Pilgrim
Cameron Hudson
(5-9, 150, Sr.) headline the Bulldogs defense after making 116 and 100 tackles respectively last year. Linebacker CJ Miller (5-11, 190, Sr.) will also play a feature role in the Skiatook defense after recording 107 tackles last season. Craig Morrison (5-11, 180, Sr.) is another important linebacker who came away with 75 tackles and four sacks last year. The Skiatook secondary, led by Hunter Gnose (6-0, 160, So.) also has several big playmakers in it. Gnose had 82 total tackles last season to go along with three interceptions. Upton will also be a key player in the secondary where he picked off four passes last year. “We should be very competitive this year. We have a very hardworking group of kids,” Miller said. Playing in a district that includes very strong teams like Shawnee and McAlester, and others like Bishop Kelley and Memorial, Skiatook’s blue-collar attitude and work ethic will truly get put to the test week in and week out.
Collinsville Cardinals Coach: KEVIN JONES Enrollment: 718 Schedule: Sept. 4 - vs. Oologah
Sept. 12 - vs. Catoosa Sept. 19 - at Skiatook Sept. 26 - at Coweta Oct. 3 - vs. Tahlequah Oct. 10 - at Grove Oct. 16 - vs. Edison Oct. 24 - Open Oct. 31 - at Pryor Nov. 7 - vs. East Central Quick Hits: The Cardinals finished with a record of 10-3 in 2013. It was the first ten win season for Collinsville since the year 2000 and the first semifinal appearance since 1993. Collinsville has qualified for the playoffs in five of the past six years after failing to advance past the regular season from 2002-2007. The Cardinals and Skiatook renew long standing hostilities in week three. Collinsville has a mark of 8-2 in the last ten outings against the Bulldogs. Last 5 Years: 2013 - 10-3 2012 - 8-3 2011 – 4-6 2010 – 3-7 2009 – 6-5 OFFENSE The Collinsville Cardinals had their best season in twenty years in 2013. They reached the Class 5A semi finals and fell one game short of a state championship game. The Cardinals won their first district championship since
in 2014 to match the success of 2013. Collinsville won a lot of close games last season, the district title and semi final appearance could have gone different ways if a couple different things happen. They’ll look to prove that 2013 wasn’t just one lucky season. Led by this defense they have a shot to contend again.
Ryan Haymaker 2000. Five starters return on offense. Shawn Kosheski (5-11, 165, Sr.) returns to the quarterback position. He replaces Zane McElroy but Kosheski actually started the first five games in 2013 while McElroy was out with an injury. So while he’s not the returning starter, he has starting experience. Full time starter Ryan Haymaker (5-10, 175, Sr.) is back at running back. Haymaker ran for over 1,000 yards last year as a junior. He’s looking to improve that number in 2014. Another running back who could see some time is Jake Burd (5-11, 185, So.). Anchoring the offensive line is Jake Douglass (6-0, 275, Sr.) and Kutler Cole (5-11, 230, Sr.). The Cardinals might rely on the running game more in 2014. They have to find a replacement for wide receiver TJ Johnson, who was one of the better receivers in the Tulsa metro area in 2014. While Collinville’s offense is a spread offense that includes balance, the strength right now is at the running back position. The experience of Kosheski will help guide the younger receivers along and get them ready for another district race. DEFENSE The strength of this Collinsville squad is the defense. They only have five starters back but they have some impact players on this side of the ball. Justin Kothe (6-0, 225, Sr.) leads an explosive 3-4 defense that could be one of the top defenses in 5A at stopping the run. Kothe was a menace up front. He recorded 126 tackles, while sacking the quarterback eight times. The linebackers he has behind him are fantastic as well. Josh Arnold (5-9, 180), led the team in tackles last season with 142. He also added four sacks. Also at the linebacker spot the Cardinals have Marc Tillman (6-0, 175) who added 70 tackles last year. The biggest surprise was the production they got out of a freshman linebacker. Levi Draper (6-2, 210, So.), had 103 tackles last year as a freshman. He has an unbelievable ceiling and will only tally more tackles before his career at Collinsville is over. The Cardinals will be hard at work
Coweta Tigers
Coach: JAY WILKERSON Enrollment: 913 Schedule: Sept. 5 – at Wagoner Sept. 12 – vs. McAlester Sept. 19 – vs. Bishop Kelley Sept. 26 – vs. Collinsville Oct. 3 – at East Central Oct. 10 – vs. Maize South KS Oct. 16 – at Pryor Oct. 24 – vs. Grove Oct. 31 – at Edison Nov. 7 – at Tahlequah Quick Hits: The Tigers battle McAlester in week two. The teams will meet for the first time since 2009 when the Buffaloes won 33-7 at Coweta. However, the Tigers have won three of the last five in the series. Coweta has failed to advance past the second round of the playoffs since moving to Class 5A in 2000. The Tigers own four playoff wins in the past 14 seasons and three of those came against Bishop Kelley. Maize South (Kan.) High School travels to Coweta for a week six showdown. The Mavericks were bounced in the first round of the Class 4A state playoffs but finished with a more than respectable record of 8-2 in 2013. Last 5 Years: 2013 - 4-6 2012 - 6-5 2011 – 6-5 2010 – 9-3 2009 – 2-8 OFFENSE First year head coach Jay Wilkerson enters his first season with a new style of football for the Coweta faithful. “One word, tempo! We want to operate at a quick pace and attack the defense from sideline to sideline,” said Wilkerson. A big part of that attack is running back/receiver KeLandus Culton (6-1, 185, Jr.). Culton has all the tools you look for in a game breaker. Good hands, quick feet and breakaway speed. Fletcher Edwards (5-8, 155, Jr.) is another speedy receiver coach Wilkerson has in his arsenal. Edwards could play a key role in taking some of the pressure off what may be a young quarterback once the team has named who will take that position. But the offensive line is key. Big Nick Thompson (6-3,
250, Sr.) and Corbin Morgan (6-0, 245, Sr.) bring senior leadership to the line and an attitude coach Wilkerson will like upfront. Playing in district 5A-4 is tough with East Central, Collinsville and a resurging Pryor Tigers, but coach Wilkerson is excited for the opportunity. “A tough non-district schedule will force us to grow up in a hurry. We’re very excited about the progress we have made so far.” Key positions such as quarterback, tight end and the offensive line are still being worked out, but the coaching staff is confident they have the players to fill those holes. DEFENSE Like teams of Coweta’s past, the new model of Tiger is copying the blueprint of playing physical, fast and swarming to the ball. Linebacker Sam Dawes (5-11, 190, Sr.) is one of several players returning with good experience on the defensive side of the ball. Fellow linebacker Kirk Russo (5-11, 180, Sr.) pursues well and plays from one side of the field to the other. Defensive lineman Tucker Meredith (6-0, 260, Jr.) will anchor what could be a young, inexperienced group up front. Despite the inexperience on the line, the Tigers do have talent waiting for their chance to prove they belong in the starting lineup. The defensive secondary, anchored by junior Austin Addington (5-11, 165, Jr.), is a quick defensive back with a knack for finding the ball. Addington is a crucial piece of the defensive puzzle. “We want to be fast and physical. We’ll place a lot of emphasis on pursuing the football and being physical,” said Wilkerson. A tough schedule opening at Wagoner the hosting McAlester at home will test the Tigers early. An early road game at East Central and a mid-season game at Pryor will go a long way in determining where the Tigers will fall as they hunt for a playoff spot.
East Central Cardinals
Coach: KENNY EVANS Enrollment: 1086 Schedule: Sept. 5 – at Bartlesville Sept. 12 – vs. Bixby Sept. 19 – vs. T. Washington Sept. 26 – at Tahlequah Oct. 3 – vs. Coweta Oct. 9 – at Tulsa Edison Oct. 16 – vs. Grove Oct. 24 – vs. Pryor Oct. 31 – OPEN Nov. 7 – at Collinsville Quick Hits: The Cardinals gave up 40 or more points six different times in 2013. The Cardinals gave up 40 or more points six times total from 1998 to
2012. East Central had a streak of 12 consecutive season opening wins snapped by Del City last year. The Cardinals travel to Bartlesville to open the 2014 season. The Bruins beat the Cardinals 44-14 in week two of 2013. The Cardinals advanced to the playoffs for the 16th consecutive season. Only Carl Albert, with 19 straight trips, has a longer streak in Class 5A. East Central has missed the post-season only once since 1993, that coming in 1997. Last 5 Years: 2013 - 4-7 2012 - 13-1 2011 – 10-2 2010 – 12-2 2009 – 10-2 OFFENSE The more things change, the more they stay the same for the Cardinals. The constant factor of speed and athleticism will once again take the field in 2014 including VYPE Top 100 choice Tre’von Cherry at quarterback. A three year starter, Cherry (6-0, 185, Sr.), who totaled 2,500 yards passing while adding another 800 yards on the ground is a bonafide playmaker on every snap. Drawing the attention of Division-I college recruiters, Cherry has 37-inch vertical leap, 4.46 speed in the 40 and a strong arm passing style. “Tre’von has all the tools,” said head coach Kenny Evans, who begins his first season on the high school level after a lengthy collegiate coaching tenure. “On top of the playmaking skills, he’s got a great football IQ. Tre’von is our coach on the field.” Cuinton Baker (5-9, 160, Sr.) gives Cherry a reliable target at receiver along with a couple of “speed burners” Jayland Brother (6-1, 190, Jr.) and Larry Johnson (5-11, 175, Jr.). “All three of them can go,” notes Evans. “Cuinton has the sure hands, Jayland will catch the ball in a crowd and we love it when we can get Larry open in space.” Adding to the playmaking abilities of the Cardinals’ offense is tight end Joseph Bridgers (6-1, 200, Sr.), described by Evans as a physical receiver and blocker. East Central will have quickness and agility at running back with Aubrey Scales (5-7, 170, Jr.) and Bryce White (5-6, 150, So.). Two year starter Josh Moreno (5-9, 240, Sr.) returns at center brings brute strength to the offensive line along with Anthony Diggs (6-3, 260, Sr.), who Evans notes has all the physical tools coaches desire in an offensive lineman. “The play of the offensive line is going to be a key for us,” said Evans. “They may not be the biggest in Class 5A but they all play

with an edge and desire on every snap.”
DEFENSE Size, strength and speed are common words used to describe the playmakers on the Cardinals defensive unit. Two such athletes the fit the mold are defensive ends Jon Johnson and Lester Boston. On the radar of Division-I recruiters, Johnson (6-3, 245, Sr.) brings 4.7 speed to bolster his ability to cover to the boundary while bringing pressure up the middle. Boston (6-3, 210, Sr.) brings a wrestler’s mentality to the gridiron with the quickness to run to the football sideline to sideline. “Those two deliver pressure on every snap,” said Evans. “When they turn it loose they can disrupt things in a great way.” Chilton Lamho (6-1, 260, Jr.), tabbed the strongest player on the team by Evans, plugs the middle of the defensive line at nose guard. Although just a sophomore, recruiters have already noted the skills of Raphiel Williams (6-2, 195, So.) at linebacker. “He’s a specimen,” said Evans touting Williams’ playmaking skills. “His size, strength and quickness are natural talents. Raphiel doesn’t know idea good of football player he can be.” The secondary will be fast and physical including Landon Wolf (5-7, 165, So.) who has been impressive in summer team camp and passing leagues. Evans expects Wolf to be a lockdown corner capable of making game changing plays in the East Central defensive packages that Evans plans to keep simple and solid. “We expect to maximize our speed with a physical attack in order to run to the football,” said Evans. “Our ability to stop the run and create turnovers will improve our performance defensively. The Cardinals open the 2014 season with three Class 6A opponents before beginning play in a competitive district race. “The first three games will test the heart of this team,” said Evans. “I’m excited about the opportunity to be a part of the tradition of the football program at East Central and I look forward to this year’s team writing another chapter of success.”

Sept. 26 – vs. Pryor Oct. 3 – Open Oct. 9 – vs. East Central Oct. 17 – at Collinsville Oct. 24 – at Tahlequah Oct. 31 – vs. Coweta Nov. 6 – Quick Hits: The Eagles win total of four in 2013 equaled their output from 2008-2012. Edison travels to the Eastside Complex in week three to challenge Nathan Hale. The Eagles have prevailed in three straight in the series and seven of the last eight. The Eagles put an end to a six game losing streak against rival Memorial with a 34-19 win in week two of 2013. The teams meet again at LaFortune in week two this fall. Last 5 Years: 2013 - 4-6 2012 - 1-9 2011 – 0-10 2010 – 2-8 2009 – 0-10 OFFENSE Head coach D.J. Howell saw immediate success in his first season at the Edison helm. A 4-6 record on paper doesn’t look like a successful season. By it’s very nature it’s a losing record. When you look at the fact that Edison had just won four games in the five seasons prior to Howell taking over last year, it shines a different light on the 4-6 season of 2013. Do it all athlete, Akylen Mayfield (6-4, 215, Sr.) returns to lead the Edison ball club into 2014. Mayfield threw for over 1,000 yards and ran for over 1,000 yards. Mayfield wasn’t a one man band but was a huge reason why Edison won four games last year. The Eagles have firepower in the backfield along with Mayfield in Mike Austin (6-0, 220, Jr.). Austin saw plenty of time as a sophomore when defenses would focus on slowing down Mayfield. Edison had a successful season last year, they were also in the middle of a youth movement. Nine starters on offense return for the Eagles. Tommy Scott (6-4, 240, Jr.) and Alex Criddle (6-3, 305, Jr.) will anchor the offensive line. Howell believes that his offensive line will help lead the offense’s success. “We feel like we have some talented and hardworking lineman to set the tone,” Howell said. “We also have some explosive playmakers to go along with them.” DEFENSE Howell really loves what he sees from his defense going into the 2014 season. “They have an aggressive, relentless, physical style of play,” Howell said. “They have a blue collar mentality and our front seven should be a strength.” Eight starters return on the defense this season.
Mayfield is a spectacular talent on the defensive side of the ball as well. Just like on offense, he has a fantastic supporting cast around him. Tre Miller (6-1, 205, Jr.) and Zane Totty (6-0, 220, Sr.) combined for 21 sacks as a linebacker duo last season. The linebacker core from Edison could be one of the best at that position in the state. Marcus Mays (6-0, 180, So.) is a cornerback who was thrown into the fire last year as a freshman. Mays could be in for a breakout season as a sophomore. Howell thinks his team has had a tremendous off-season and is looking forward to seeing how it translates in 2014. Edison moves down from dealing with 6A schools to 5A. They no longer have to deal with teams like Broken Arrow and Jenks. They will compete in district 5A-4. 2014 could see Edison’s first playoff trip since 2005.
GLENPOOL WARRIORS
Coach: STEVE EDWARDS Enrollment: 657 Schedule: Sept. 5 – at Berryhill Sept. 12 – at Beggs Sept. 19 – vs. Oologah Sept. 26 – vs. Ada Oct. 3 – at Harrah Oct. 10 – vs. Bristow Oct. 16 – at Tecumseh Oct. 24 – vs. Santa Fe South Oct. 31 – at Tuttle Nov. 7 - vs. McLoud Quick Hits: Glenpool and Berryhill face off in the season opener for the seventh consecutive season. The Warriors have won 4 of the 6 meetings including 44-19 in 2013. The Warriors missed the playoffs in both 2011 and 2012 after enjoying 15 straight years in the post season from 1997-2011. Steven Edwards took over the head coaching position in Glenpool in 1996, inheriting a program with 14 consecutive losses. Oh how the tide has turned. Edwards’ record at the school stands at 150-65 going into his 19th season. His teams won the 2002 and 2008 state championships. Last 5 Years: 2013 - 5-5 , 2012 - 3-7, 2011 – 7-5 2010 – 9-3, 2009 – 9-2 OFFENSE After missing the playoffs the last two years, there’s a hunger for success at Glenpool. “You can see it everywhere,” said head coach Steve Edwards, who enters his 18th year on the sidelines. “Our kids’ efforts during the off-season are evidence that we want something more this year.” After finding its identity midseason following a change to a
2-back shotgun alignment, the Warriors enter 2014 confident of continued success with Parker West (5-10, 170, Sr.), who ran for more the 1,500 yards joining Austin Lecroix (6-0, 205, Jr.). “Parker’s speed and Austin’s power gives us a good mix,” said Edwards. Glenpool will rely upon the talents of quarterback Colton Kane (5-10, 170, So.) to direct the offensive efforts. “Colton has lots of skill and leadership abilities,” notes Edwards. “He’s got good arm strength with touch and can run the ball also.” Kane will have plenty of talented targets at receiver including Branson Straessle (6-2, 180, Sr.), who has drawn the attention of college recruiters, along with Justin McGuiness (6-0, 175, Sr.) and last year’s quarterback Sean Davis (6-3, 175, Sr.) as a possession type receiver. Offensive line prowess will come from Jordan Baker (6-3, 250, Sr.), Tyler Winters (6-2, 250, Sr.) and Nick Heck (6-3, 260, Jr.) and Bryce Remington (5-10, 220, Jr.). DEFENSE Edwards describes his experienced defensive crew as bigger and more athletic as eight starters return. “We’ll have the look of the defense from the 2008 season,” said Edwards. “We’re experienced in every area with kids that enjoy playing defense.” Hunter Brown (6-0, 160, Sr.) returns at linebacker for his third year as a starter to call defensive signals. Dalton Cardwell (6-0, 185, Sr.), Jon Kane (5-11, 170, Jr.) and three sport standout Andrew Gossett (6-0, 180, Jr.) solidify the quartet of linebackers. Cole Shelton (6-0, 250, Sr.) brings strength and quickness at nose guard while Jordan Baker adds size and mobility at defensive end. In the secondary, playmaking talents return with Justin McGuiness and Branson Straessle at safety while Hunter Hughart (6-1, 170, Jr.) will join Sean Davis at cornerback in Glenpool’s 3-4 scheme. “Class 4A is tough every night out,” admits Edwards. “We traded Douglass for Tuttle in our district race. Our early schedule will test our mettle. With the combination of skill, experience and senior leadership, we can be a really good football team.”

Morgan Long Sand Springs Track Morgan Long is no stranger to history. As a sophomore in 2012 she qualified for the state cross country meet and earned the best finish ever by a female at Charles Page High School coming in with a time of 11:49.89 good enough for 12th place overall. Last year as a junior Long again made history as part of the first Charles Page girls team to qualify as a team for the state meet. Long again did her part at state finishing in eighth place overall with a time of 11:52. Long added to her trophy case last spring during track season when she placed third in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:11.86. That was also an improvement from her fifth place finish in the event as a sophomore. Coming into this fall Long is again a favorite to place in the top 10 at the state cross country and again place highly at state track in the spring. For these reasons and her continued excellence in both cross country and track Long is the Mazzio’s Female Athlete of the Month.
Michael Anderson Owasso Football A two-sport athlete, Owasso’s Michael Anderson has an impact on both the football field and basketball court. On the basketball floor Anderson has helped lead the Rams to back-to-back trips to the Class 6A state tournament. Meanwhile on the gridiron Anderson stars at defensive end and has already verbally committed to the University of Tulsa. As part of his amazing play on the football field Anderson was also named to the VYPE Top 100 list and will be eligible to win the Shelter Insurance Mr. Football Award. Anderson is also a star in the classroom earning a 4.0 grade point average and takes AP classes in Psychology, Calculus, Physics, and English. Sept. 26 – vs. Miami Oct. 3 – vs. Wagoner Oct. 10 – at Oologah Oct. 16 – at Vinita Oct. 24 – vs. Catoosa Oct. 31 – vs. McClain Nov. 7 – vs. Cleveland Quick Hits: The Commandos have won 82 of their last 84 regular season games. Sallisaw defeated Cascia Hall 37-35 last year. The only other regular season loss since 2005 came to Holland Hall in 2009. Cascia and Holland Hall open the season for the 17th consecutive year. The Commandos have a 13-3 advantage over the Dutchmen in those meetings. Super powers collide in week three when Cascia Hall travels to Millwood. It’s the first time the schools have battled on the gridiron since the 2001 state championship game won by Millwood 31-7. Last 5 Years: 2013 - 9-2, 2012 - 11-1 , 2011 – 141, 2010 – 11-2, 2009 – 13-0 OFFENSE After racking up 20 wins and one district title since moving up to Class 4A two years ago the Commandos are poised to make a run for the state championship this fall. This year the Cascia Hall offense will be led by quarterback Michael Bloomfield (6-0, 170, Sr.) and Reece Lambert (5-11, 170, Sr.) who will start at receiver. Last season Bloomfield completed 78 of his 151 pass attempts for 1,075 yards and 15 touchdowns. Lambert caught the majority of those passes last year with 46 receptions for 754 yards and 11 touchdowns. A perfect compliment to Lambert, Zach Powell (5-9, 165, Jr.) will be the Commandos number two receiver this year. In the run game Nathan Dinsmore (6-2, 205, Jr.) will lead the charge for the Commandos according to head coach Joe Medina who believes Dinsmore has the talent to rush for 1,500 yards this year. Physical fullbacks Cooper Bethel (6-0, 195, Sr.) and Luke Smith (6-1, 230, Sr.) will also play big roles in the running game this year, as

Michael Bloomfield Dinsmore’s chief leading blockers. DEFENSE A team that always takes pride in its “Blue Swarm” defense that employs an aggressive 3-4 scheme the Commandos will once again have a defense that keeps offensive coordinators up at night this year. Lambert will once again head up the charge on defense from his spot in the secondary. Last season Lambert made an impressive eight interceptions and is a player Medina describes as a “fearless tackler.” Bloomfield also returns to his spot at safety this year and will give the Commandos a wealth of senior leadership in the back end of the defense. Powell will also be a two-way player in the Cascia Hall secondary starting at cornerback. Working at inside linebacker both Peter Nilson (6-1, 200, Sr.) and Bethel will be catalysts for the Commandos’ defense. Brett Boone (5-10, 180, So.) is the fastest linebacker on the Cascia Hall roster and will also see significant playing time. The Commandos also have significant star power on the defensive line in Smith who was also a state qualifier on the Cascia Hall wrestling team last winter. Smith’s size gives him the ability to dominate the line of scrimmage and but he will get plenty of help from Adam Flenniken (6-3, 300, Sr.), Derek Cole (6-4, 230, Sr.), Chad Rhoades (6-1, 215, Sr.) and Garrett Hardt (6-2, 200, Sr.).
Catoosa Indians
Coach: AARON MEIER Enrollment: 616 Schedule: Sept. 5 – vs. Sallisaw Sept. 12 – at Collinsville Sept. 19 – at Grove Sept. 26 – vs. McLain Oct. 3 – at Cleveland Oct. 10 – vs. Vinita Oct. 16 – vs. Oologah Oct. 24 – at Cascia Hall Oct. 31 – vs. Miami Nov. 7 – at Wagoner Quick Hits: The Indians extended their con-
secutive playoff appearance streak to five in 2013. Catoosa made the playoffs just five times from 1984 to 2008. Catoosa takes the short journey to Collinsville in week two. This will mark the 23rd consecutive season the teams have met. The series is dead even in the last 18 games. Catoosa won in 2013 21-14. The Indians face Grove for the first time since 2009 in week three. The last meeting went in Catoosa’s favor by a margin of 21-14, ending an 8-game Ridgerunners winning streak in the series. Last 5 Years: 2013 - 8-4, 2012 - 5-6 , 2011 – 121, 2010 – 10-3, 2009 – 7-4 OFFENSE Last year the Indians finished the year with an 8-4 overall record, making it to the Class 4A quarterfinals before losing to eventual state champion Anadarko. This year the Indians are ready to get things underway and hit the gridiron according to head coach Aaron Meier. “We are looking forward to the 2014 football season and are excited to get it started,” Meier said. Several key players to watch on the Catoosa offense this year will come from the receiving corp. Chase Nevel (6-0, 175, Sr.) and Nathan Varano (5-11, 170, Sr.) will headline that group and give the Indians two playmakers on the outside. In the running game Devon Hemphill (5-10, 175, Sr.) will be Catoosa’s feature back this year running behind a big Catoosa offensive line. Two of the biggest members of that line will be Dakota Boughman (6-0, 280, Sr.) and Logan Wofford (5-11, 240, Jr.). DEFENSE Catoosa will be running a 4-3 base defense and putting a heavy emphasis on stopping the run this year according to Meier. In a district containing teams like Wagoner, Oologah and Cascia Hall all put a heavy emphasis on their run game, Catoosa’s focus on stopping the run makes even more sense. On the defensive line Daniel Velazquez (5-11, 270, Jr.) will team with Boughman at the defensive tackle positions. Meanwhile Wofford will use his explosiveness to get off the ball and rush the passer at defensive end. Just like on the offensive side of the ball Varano and Nevel will pair up to form a very formidable duo for the Indians’ defense, this time in the Catoosa secondary. One big challenge facing the Catoosa defense this year however will be replacing two linebackers like Hunter Harrison and Cash Nuckolls who both graduated
Nathan Varano in May after recording over 130 tackles in their final season in an Indians uniform.
mclain titans
Coach: JARVIS PAYNE SR. Enrollment: 571 Schedule: Sept. 5 – vs. Mannford Sept. 12 – vs. NOAH Sept. 19 – at Hilldale Sept. 26 – at Catoosa Oct. 3 – at Vinita Oct. 10 – vs. Cleveland Oct. 16 – vs. Wagoner Oct. 24 – at Miami Oct. 31 – vs. Cascia Hall Nov. 7 – at Oologah Quick Hits: McLain’s last won a post season game in 1991 when the Scots defeated Pryor in the first round 34-7. The Titans non-district schedule consists of three new teams in 2014. McLain and NOAH will meet for the first time ever. Mannford was last on the schedule in 2011. Hilldale and McLain have met once. The Titans lost to the Hornets on the road in the opening round of the 2011 playoffs. OFFENSE McLain might have to deal with growing pains during the 2014 season. They have to replace a lot of talented pieces on both sides of the ball. The Titans had two players sign with D-1 programs with receivers Nigel Carter and Bishop Louie each signing with University of Tulsa. They have a solid cornerstone to the offense in junior running back Joshua Jacobs (5-10, 175, Jr.). As a sophomore in 2013, Jacobs ran for over 1,300 yards and scored 12 touchdowns. Jacobs will use the experience he received as a sophomore to be one of the key parts of the 2014 offense. Also returning is tight end Trevion Jones (6-3, 225, Sr.). One of the few seniors on the offense, Jones was targeted last year when defenses would focus on slowing down Carter and Louie. He finished with over 400 yards and
At CRUNCH TIME, we’re there.
3 touchdowns. He’ll also provide some senior leadership on a team with new faces. Head coach Jarvis Payne Sr. believes his offense will be aggressive and led by Jacobs, could put up some points. DEFENSE Jelani Lewis (5-9, 200, Jr.) and Marquis Ezzell (5-10, 205, So.) will anchor the defense at the linebacker position. Lewis is the leading tackler that’s returning in 2014. He totaled 56 tackles last year as a sophomore. Ezzell saw time as a freshman and got 32 tackles. The linebacker duo helps lead a defense that Payne likes to call “physical speed”. In front of the linebackers is nose guard Curtis Johnson (5-11, 275, Jr.). Johnson will be able to get a push up front and allow the linebackers to go to work. McLain is in one of the toughest districts in Oklahoma. With Cascia Hall moving over from Disctirct 4A-4, it makes the battle for a playoff spot more difficult. If the Titans can grow up and come together quickly, the Titans could compete for a playoff spot deep in the season like they have the last several years. “We have a lot of young kids working hard to improve,” Payne said. “I am very proud of them.”

Coach: BRANDON CRAIG Enrollment: 581 Schedule: Sept. 4 – at Collinsville Sept. 12 – vs. Skiatook Sept. 19 – at Glenpool Sept. 26 – vs. Wagoner Oct. 3 – at Miami Oct. 10 – vs. Cascia Hall Oct. 16 – at Catoosa Oct. 24 – vs. Cleveland Oct. 31 – at Vinita Nov. 7 – vs. McLain Quick Hits: The Mustangs have made the playoffs in 12 of the last 13 years. 2011 marks the only absence during that stretch. Oologah will open against someone other than Claremore for the first time since 1991. Long-time rival Collinsville moves into that spot in 2014. younger and inexperienced players stepping into those roles on the line. But an experienced quarterback should help alleviate some of the pressure being placed on the young offensive line. Payton Craig (6-3, 206, Sr.) threw for 1,271 yards and rushed for 697 yards last year, scoring 21 touchdowns and leading the Mustangs to an eight win season. This year his arm may come into play much more than his legs. “We are more likely to throw the ball more this year than in the past. We have an experienced quarterback and a lot of talent at the wide receiver position,” said Craig. That talented group of receivers is lead by Breyden DeSpain (6-2, 195, Jr.) who recorded 650 yards and eight touchdowns last year. DeSpain has good size and speed making him the top threat in the passing game, but look for Keenan Ferrier (5-8, 145, Jr.) to get his share of balls thrown his way. Ferrier accounted for 272 yards last year and he should see those numbers increase in 2014. The third piece of this receiver puzzle is Wade Mcgee (5-10, 160, Sr.). McGee gives Craig another viable option in the passing game. Running back Jimmy McKinney (6-1, 220, Jr.) is a powerful runner rushing for 1,286 yards and 16 touchdowns last year. Look for similar production this season. “Our district added Cascia Hall, which made it even tougher than it was so we will have to play consistent football each week. Taking care of the ball and eliminating turnovers will be huge,” said coach Craig. DEFENSE Initially the defense may be the strength for the Mustangs. With seven returning starters the defense will need to keep the offense in games early and force some turnovers. “We will be very fast on defense and bring back a number of kids who have started or got playing time last year. This should be the strength of our team,” said Craig. On the line defensive tackle Cole Martin (5-11, 200, Sr.) returns as the team’s leading tackler with 76 solos and two sacks last year. Fellow defensive lineman Zach Duncan (6-0, 255, Sr.) had 70 tackles of his own and six sacks. The pair will cause havoc on the other side of the line. Linebacker Trent Harris (5-10, 205, Jr.) plays with speed and plays with desire and passion. Last year he grabbed 48 tackles, one sack and two interceptions. Playing opposite Harris is senior linebacker Seth Jensen (5-9, 185). Jensen is an energetic player always looking to make a big play. Jensen returns with three sacks and 36 tackles to his credit. The secondary
features Logan Armstrong (5-9, 140, Jr.). Armstrong snatched three interceptions last year and made 25 tackles from his corner position. District play will not be easy with Wagoner, Catoosa, Cascia Hall and McLain all looming for one of four playoff spots.
Central Braves
Coach: DON GIBSON Enrollment: 599 Schedule: Sept. 5 – at Memorial Sept. 12 – at Booker T. Washington Sept. 19 – vs. NW Classen Sept. 26 – at Broken Bow Oct. 3 – vs. Sallisaw Oct. 10 – at Ft. Gibson Oct. 16 – vs. Muldrow Oct. 24 – at Stilwell Oct. 31 – vs. Metro Christian Nov. 7 – at Poteau Quick Hits: The Braves drop down into Class 4A and will play an entirely new schedule save the opener against Memorial. The Braves and Chargers meet to open the season for the fifth straight year. Each team has won a pair of games, with Memorial taking the last two. Central takes on Booker T. Washington for the first time since 2007. The Hornets won that meeting 28-6. The Braves last playoff win was in the first round of the 1997 playoffs. Central knocked off Claremore before losing to Carl Albert in the second round. Last 5 Years: 2013 - 3-7, 2012 - 3-7 , 2011 – 8-3 2010 – 5-5, 2009 – 8-3 OFFENSE Look for the Braves to add a spread offense with multiple formations this season. The Braves have several players that shift and move to multiple positions keeping the defense guessing. Kejuan Jones (5-7, 160, Sr.) is listed as a running back, but he’s more than capable of making big plays from several positions. Jones has good speed and is tough to contain. RJ Williams (5-9, 160, So.) is young, but brings his athleticism to the field and gives the coaching staff another weapon. Wide receivers Kyandre Lyons (5-10, 170, Jr.) and Raymone Knox (6-1, 185, Jr.) are two quick players with good leaping ability and a knack for grabbing the jump balls. Chauncey Boyd (5-7, 165, Jr.) is yet another athletic ball carrier at wide out or in the slot. “We have a young team with a lot of potential. It will be interesting to see how our young talent develop and compete in a tough Class 4A league,” said Gibson. DEFENSE The Braves return four starters
from last year’s team with junior defensive lineman Shemar Robinson (6-3, 255) leading the way. The big man will stack the line of scrimmage and spend most of the night stuffing the run. Also look for Devonte Houston (5-11, 260, Jr.) to be in the mix at defensive tackle. Houston and Robinson are tough to handle in the trench and together can force an opposing offense to rethink their desire to run up the middle. Linebacker Billy Russell (6-0, 205, Sr.) will run through you like a freight train. Joining Russell at linebacker is L McBride (5-10, 210, So.) giving them two fast players that bring that linebacker mentality to the field. Tremaine Wright (5-10, 180, Sr.) will shore up the secondary for the Braves. Wright enters his senior season looking to prove himself as one of the top defensive backs in the state.
Berryhill Chiefs
Coach: PAT HARPER Enrollment: 425 Schedule: Sept. 5 - vs. Glenpool Sept. 12 - at Cushing Sept. 19 - at Beggs Sept. 26 - vs. Sequoyah-Claremore Oct. 3 - at Verdigris Oct. 10 - at Sperry Oct. 17 - vs. Daniel Webster Oct. 24 - vs. Dewey Oct. 31 - at Kellyville Nov. 7 - vs. Lincoln Christian Last 5 Years: 2013 - 9-3 2012 - 9-2 2011- 12-2 2010 - 5-6 2009 - 11-3 OFFENSE Entering the 2014 season, Berryhill head coach Pat Harper is ecstatic with the group of returning Chiefs. The Chiefs return seven offensive starters. “Should be very exciting this year,” said Harper “We have some returning starters with lots of experience.” On offense Berryhill plans to be very balanced. “We will have a very explosive offense,” Harper said. “We should be very balanced, both running and throwing the ball.” Ty Walker (5-11, 190, Sr.), will call the signals for the Chiefs. Last season Walker threw for 1,706 yards completing 117-178 passes. Coach Harper’s balanced offense begins with Walker. The senior quarterback is always a threat to make the opposing defense pay with his legs. Walker ran for over 700 yards on 125 carries in 2013. Walker will be joined in the backfield by Chad Dillard (5-10, 175, Sr.). Dillard had an outstanding season at tailback, rushing for nearly 1,000 yards last
season on 132 carries. Leading the rushing attack for the Chiefs on the offensive line is Grant Bauer (5-11, 200, Sr.). Berryhill has an extra weapon on offense that many high school teams lack, a great kicker. Over the past two season as the starting kicker Justin Dunn (5-9, 170, Sr.) has attempted 22 field goals and put 20 through the up rights. Having the option to kick this season late in games may prove to be a huge asset for the Chiefs. DEFENSE The defense will return a veteran group of eight starters with tons of experience. Berryhill defense will display great speed around the field. The defensive leader for the Chiefs is Seth Hassenplug (5-11, 205, Sr.). Hassenplug leads the team making sure everyone is in place calling out the signals to his teammates. Outside of Hassenplug’s great leadership the senior flies around the field creating havoc for opposing offenses. Gage Bauer (5-11, 200, Sr.) creates trouble for opposing offensive linemen using his speed and footwork to get into the backfield. The Chiefs will run a 4-4 defense this season behind Hassenplug and Bauer. Trey Carothers (5-11, 160, Sr.) leads the Chiefs secondary at the Safety position. With the senior leadership of Hassenplug, Bauer, and Carothers Berryhill will be a tough matchup for opposing offenses.
Kellyville Ponies
Coach: Scott Robb Enrollment: 331 Schedule: Sept. 5 – at Kiefer Sept. 12 – vs. Caney Valley Sept. 19 – vs. Liberty Sept. 26 – at Sperry Oct. 3 – vs. Webster Oct. 10 – at Dewey Oct. 16 – at Keys Oct. 24 – at Lincoln Christian Oct. 31 – vs. Berryhill Nov. 7 – vs. Verdigris Last 5 Years: 2013 - 2-8 2012 - 010 2011- 5-5 2010 – 3-7 2009 – 0-10 OFFENSE High school football is back and for Kellyville head football coach Scott Robb, he looks to the future this upcoming season. After finishing last season with a 2-8 record, Kellyville is looking to be pretty balanced offensively. “In our spread offense, we will be doing a lot of zone reads, jet sweeps, powers, counters quick game passing,
sprint outs and play action,” Robb said. “The quarterback will be responsible for one defender in the run game as well as the passing game. I’d like to say that I run the veer out of the shotgun because at some point we will read almost every defensive lineman as well as the play side linebacker.” For the upcoming season, the Ponies are returning seven starters, including quarterback Dakota McDougal (63, 170, Jr.). Last season, McDougal passed for 1,312 yards with 11 passing touchdowns and rushed for 203 yards. Other experienced players Kellyville is set to bring back is Casey Copeland (6-3, 240, Sr.), Stephen Brockup (6-3, 240, Sr), Zach Rossman (5-11, 180, Sr.) and Carson Blevins (5-11, 150, Jr.). As a sophomore, Blevins finished last season with 19 catches for 187 total receiving yards, which was second most behind Jon Waggoner, who graduated. The receiving core last season racked up over 1,300 receiving yards and with experience under their belt, they’ll be sure to double that their senior season. DEFENSE Last season, Kellyville’s defensive stat sheet brought out the wow factor in football fans. The team had 551 total tackles, 16 sacks and 23 passes defended. This season, the Ponies return six starters as they look to run a 4-3 defensive formation and will look to be very aggressive. “We will run a very aggressive defense this season,” Robb said. “We will base out of a 4-3, but we will often line up in a 4-4. Regardless of the front, we will stunt often.” Returning six starters on the defensive side of the ball, Robb and his coaches will be looking to Stephen Brockup (6-3, 240, Sr.), Casey Copeland (6-3, 240, Sr.), Gage Lawrence (5-8, 165, Sr.), Jared Bruton (5-11, 175, Jr.) and Hunter Phillips (6-1, 215, So.). As a junior, Lawrence racked up 46 total tackles and also as a junior, Brockup finished the season with 58 total tackles, second on the team behind Waggoner. This season, Robb knows he has a great, talented team and he believes they will surprise some people. “There is a good nucleus of players who are working very hard this summer to get Kellyville back in the playoffs,” Robb said. “I have implanted the strength and conditioning program that we did in Texas and the players have bought into it. It will not be easy, but the rest of the coaches and I are very excited about this upcoming season.”
Sperry Pirates
Coach: ROBERT PARK
Enrollment: 340 Schedule: Sept. 5 – at Adair Sept. 12 – vs. Sequoyah Claremore Sept. 19 – vs. Inola Sept. 26 – vs. Kellyville Oct. 3 – at Lincoln Christian Oct. 10 – vs. Berryhill Oct. 17 – vs. Verdigris Oct. 24 – at Jay Oct. 31 – vs. Webster Nov. 7 – at Dewey Last 5 Years: 2013 - 1-9 2012: 3-7 2011: 4-6 2010: 8-2 2009: 8-5 OFFENSE Head coach Robert Park is looking for some production out of the passing game this season. With seven returning starters back on offense the Pirates will turn to quarterback Jagger Park (6-0, 165, Sr.) for that production. The team is searching for the right combination of quarterback/receiver, but Park is confident he can lead this team to a winning season. A good running game will help, as Salvador Fonseca (6-2, 230, Sr.) will pound the ball and force defenses to stack the box to stop the run. On the line look for Franky Buck (5-10, 220, Sr.) and Matt Kaze (5-10, 175, Sr.) to bring along a young group of linemen as they continue to work to improve and protect their quarterback. Jacob Waits (5-10, 155, Jr.) is another running back with good speed and could become the X-factor for the Pirates. DEFENSE Defensively the Pirates will run a 3-4 scheme and play to their strengths on defense. Fonseca starts at linebacker with Nate Torix (5-9, 150, Sr.). Torix delivers with speed and an ability to contain on the corners. Buck will play both ways moving to the defensive line in the 3-4 defense. The secondary features Chandler Potter (5-9, 150, Sr.) a quick defender with a nose for the ball and Park who goes both ways and may not leave the field this season. “We must have a great summer and must stay healthy this fall to be successful,” said Park.
Lincoln Christian Bulldogs Coach: DARREN MELTON Enrollment: 295 Schedule: Sept. 5 – vs. Kansas Sept. 12 – at Holland Hall Sept. 19 – at Oklahoma Christian Sept. 26 – vs. Verdigris Oct. 3 – vs. Sperry Oct. 10 – at Webster Oct. 16 – at Dewey Oct. 24 – vs. Kellyville
Oct. 31 – vs. Sequoyah Tahlequah Nov. 7 – at Berryhill Last 5 Years: 2013-8-5 2012 - 7-4 2011- 11-2 2010 - 10-3 2009 - 13-2 OFFENSE Lincoln Christian and head coach Darren Melton return a good nucleus of players on the offensive side of the ball. Quarterback Micah Wilson (6-3, 195, Jr.) threw for 2,650 yards and 30 touchdowns last season and led the Bulldogs to an eight-win season. Wilson and leading receiver Alec Davidson (6-0, 177, Jr.) were both named to the VYPE Top 100. Davidson accounted for 714 yards and seven touchdowns making him go-to receiver in the Bulldog offense. Jake White (5-7, 165, Jr.) had 627 yards and 10 touchdowns of his own giving Wilson another weapon in the passing game. The combo of Davidson and White will give opposing defensive coordinators headaches. Running back Reed Martin (6-0, 185, So.) rushed for 365 yards and five touchdowns as a freshman and he’s expected to be the feature back in the offense this season. Dean Goodrich (6-0, 203, Sr.) gets the nod at tight end. Goodrich has improved his blocking and receiving this offseason. “We are very optimistic about the 2014 version of the Lincoln Christian Bulldog football team. With a solid nucleus of starters returning from a quarterfinal run in 2013, the ingredients are there for the makings of a successful season. If we can find some depth at the skilled positions and our rotation up front materializes, I like our chances for another deep run into the playoffs,” said Melton. DEFENSE Linebacker play is key for the Bulldogs. Spencer Farthing (5-11, 194, Sr.) returns as the Bulldogs leading tackler with 108 total tackles in 2013. Farthing will start at one of the outside linebacker positions and Bryton Bartley (5-8, 190, Sr.) another linebacker, added 95 tackles of his own last year. Joining Farthing and Bartley

is junior linebacker Levi Duininck (5-8, 186), a quick backer who sees the field well and attacks the ball. A pair of defensive ends look to contain the outside edge and get after the opposing teams quarterback. Goodrich and Sam Mosier (5-11, 191, Sr.) will bookend the defensive line. Last year Goodrich had 74 tackles and caused all sorts of problems for opposing teams. “Most of the secondary returns intact and with a good rotation of linemen that can give meaningful reps. It should translate into our ability to limit opponents in the run game,” said Melton.

2012 – 1-9 2011 – 3-7 2010 – 2-8 2009 – 3-7 OFFENSE The Warriors enter 2014 on new turf with a move to Class 3A. Coach Kenny Jackson begins his second year at the helm and welcomes the return of seven starters to the offensive unit. Kohmar Shannon (5-10, 160, Jr.) will move from wide receiver to quarterback and create more options for Jackson when calling plays. “Shannon has the ability you want at quarterback reading defenses and making good decisions under pressure,” said Jackson. The ground game will rely upon the speedy talents of Tyrhan Short (5-10, 180, Jr.) and Keyonte Jackson (5-10, 180, Sr.). Zach McAnelly (6-0, 180, Jr.), who played quarterback a year ago, moves to wide receiver to join Tyreek Shaw (5-10, 180, Sr.). “Shaw is the fastest kid on the team,” said Jackson while discussing the overall team speed. “He’s our big play guy and with McAnelly out there, we have two sure handed receivers.” Size is apparent on the offensive line with Aaron Nunez (6-1, 290, Sr.) and Zachary Kimsey (6-3, 290, Sr.) to opens holes up front. “We’re going to be much improved offensively,” said Jackson, 30

“definitely more explosive. A year’s experience in our system is building added confidence. The difference is like night and day.” DEFENSE Shoring up a defense that allowed 40.5 points per game remains the top priority for Jackson and his staff. “Play with aggression,” said Jackson while defining the expectations for the defensive unit. Playmaking experience returns to the 3-4 alignment including the Warriors’ tackle chart leader Derek Buggs (60, 190, So.), who totaled 105 stops last year as a freshman. “Buggs has what you want in a defensive leader,” said Jackson, “a player with lots of ability plus an aggressive nature.” Alden Maynard (6-0, 210, Sr.) will provide added experience at linebacker along with Derek McAnelly (5-10, 200, So.). Play in the defensive front will anchor around a big defensive trio including Wes Hopkins (6-0, 290, Jr.), Aaron Nunez and Zachary Kimsey at defensive tackle. “We’ll rotate the three big guys to keep everybody fresh.” Tyreek Shaw will continue to be the secondary unit leader after last year returning to pass interceptions to the end zone.” “He’s not just fast,” Jackson said, “he’s got good cover skill that warrant not throwing the ball his way.” Zach McAnelly and Kohmar Shannon will also play in the defensive backfield. “Experience as a unit has made a 100% change in our expectations,” notes Jackson. “The move to Class 3A is still going to require a focused effort every night.” With the new classification, the Warriors’ schedule has a total makeover as Berryhill is the only team that returns to the regular season lineup of opponents.
Verdigris Cardinals Coach: TONY DANIELS Enrollment: 349
Schedule: Sept. 5 – vs. Pawhuska Sept. 12 – vs. Miami
Sept. 19 – at Adair Sept. 26 – at Lincoln Christian Oct. 10 – vs. Inola Oct. 16 – at Sperry Oct. 24 – at Webster Oct. 31 – vs. Dewey Nov. 7 – at Kellyville Last 5 Years:
2013 - 2-8 2012 - 10-2 2011- 10-2 2010 – 10-2 2009 – 9-4
OFFENSE Kicking off the 2014 season is
something that the Cardinals are very anxious for after finishing the 2013 season with a 2-8 overall record. Youth played a big part in last season’s record but experience will be the common denominator this season. Led by quarterback Reece Phillips (6-2, 195, Sr.) and running back Austin Senephimmachack (5-10, 170, Sr.) the Cardinals will have a very strong run game. Earning 521 yards and 508 yards on the ground respectively last season both players are expected to have even better numbers this year. Running back Dylan Hight (5-10, 165, So.) will also be a main ball carrier this year after racking up 480 yards as a freshman. Wide receiver Easton Meaux (5-9, 155, Sr.) will also pose a dual threat by not only being a target in the passing game but also taking handoffs this year as a rusher. With so many players capable of carrying the football for big gains this year the offensive line, led by Justin Cody (6-0, 225, Jr.), will also have to perform well this season. “We should have a good running game and be able to open up and throw the ball more this year,” head coach Tony Daniels said. DEFENSE The Cardinals will also feature an athletic defense this season based out of a 4-3 front. Linebacker Seth McLaughlin (6-0, 205, Sr.) had 91 tackles, 13 tackles for loss and three sacks last season and will once again be the heart and soul of the Verdigris defense. Hight will also play some linebacker this season along with also lining up at safety part of the time after making 75 tackles, 11 tackles for loss and intercepting two passes last year. Also patrolling the secondary will be Reece Phillips (6-2, 195, Sr.) who made 52 tackles and had two interceptions last year. Trenton Dorsey (5-10, 180, Sr.) is another key defensive back to watch this season. Last year Dorsey had 35 tackles and one interception from his cornerback spot. Senephimmachack rounds out the players to watch on the Verdigris defense this year. A starter at defensive end Senephimmachack made 48 tackles, 10 tackles for loss and had three sacks as a junior. Overall coach Daniels said he thinks his team will be much improved from last year. “We will have many returning starters back on both sides of the ball compared to last year. Our players this year have a ‘never quit’ attitude and we are looking forward to the upcoming season,” Daniels said.

Coach: JAMES BURKHALTER Enrollment: 446 Schedule: Sept. 5 – vs. OKC Legion Sept. 12 – at Webster Sept. 19 – vs. Woodward Sept. 26 – at Morris Oct. 3 – at Roland Oct. 10 – vs. Checotah Oct. 17 – at Beggs Oct. 24 – vs. Victory Christian Oct. 31 – vs. Okmulgee Nov. 7 – vs. Hilldale Last 5 Years: 2013 - 4-6 2012 - 1-8 2011 – DNP 2010 – 0-10 2009 – 0-10 OFFENSE Senior AJ Lewis returns as the team’s starting quarterback after throwing for 1,451 yards last year. Lewis is one of the top quarterbacks in the district and will keep the defense guessing with his ability to run and pass. One player Lewis will look for is Travis Hytche (Sr.). Hytche is a hybrid type player that accounted for 600 yards of offense last year giving the coaching staff a dependable weapon in the passing game. Junior running back Laqurius Taft had 811 total yards last year, 746 of those coming on the ground. Another running back to watch is sophomore Knotea Lofton. Lofton gained 277 as a freshman, but has looked good in spring practice. Last but certainly not least is Deadric Cherry. Cherry enters his senior season as a receiver, but can step into the backfield if the coaching staff calls for it. Look for Hytche and Cherry to have All-State type performances with Lewis throwing the ball. “This is our year to come out and turn some heads. We’re returning 99.9% of our team and are ready to be very competitive,” said Burkhalter. DEFENSE Like most defenses today, the Ropers defense is built on speed and aggression. But what separates the Ropers from the rest is the play of linebacker Devin Robinson. The senior will lead this young but talented squad as they look to flip the field position and cause turnovers. Jawane Mason (Jr.) and Deravion Owens (So.) join Robinson at linebacker giving the Ropers a trio of hard-hitting, fast backers to deal with if you’re the opposing offense. Sophomore Kortland Scott gets the nod at defensive end, while Lewis will go both ways playing safety on defense.

Coach: JEFF WILLIAMS Enrollment: 382 Schedule: Sept. 4 – vs. Chelsea Sept. 12 – vs. Salina Sept. 19 – at Sperry Sept. 26 – at Sequoyah Tahlequah Oct. 3 – vs. Sequoyah Claremore Oct. 10 – at Verdigris Oct. 16 – vs. Jay Oct. 24 – at Westville Oct. 31 – vs. Locust Grove Nov. 7 – at Keys Last 5 Years: 2013 - 5-6 2012 - 4-6 2011- 2-8 2010 – 5-6 2009 – 3-7 OFFENSE A multiple formation, spread style offense is what head coach Jeff Williams has implemented at Inola. The up-tempo style will get the ball in multiple players hands. Coach Williams likes what he sees from senior Jordan Correa (5-10, 165) who can play either running back or receiver. Juniors Trent Morris (6-2, 175) and Dillon Springer (5-9, 155) are fast playmakers that figure into the spread scheme for Inola. Justin Hawkins (5-10, 200, Jr.) is another running back capable of making big plays for the offense. With so many skill players it’s easy to see why coach Williams is excited about the prospect of getting the ball in the hands of these playmakers. The ingredients for a good offensive line start with Logan Gillum (6-0,
230, Jr.) and Alex McCombs (6-1, 215, So.). “I’m very excited to have the opportunity to lead these young men and this community this upcoming football season. We have a chance to be pretty good up front on both sides of the ball,” said Williams. “While we’re not very deep in the trenches, the guys we do have are workers and fighters. We will have talent at the skill positions that will be called upon to lighten the load on an inexperienced quarterback.” Look for the Longhorns to make a decision on their quarterback in August. DEFENSE Linebacker Nathan Biggs (5-10, 170, Jr.) will start on the inside, while junior Caleb Bennett (6-1, 170) starts on the outside. Bennett could see time at safety as well. “We are a base 3-4 football team. We will pursue the ball in a sound, aggressive way,” said Williams. Junior J.D. Schumer (6-2, 210) will pressure the opposing offenses from his defensive end spot. On the interior of the line look for Deuce Dial, a 6-foot-4 260 pound nose guard. Dial brings senior leadership to the field for the Longhorns. Correa will start in the secondary at safety. Overall the Longhorns have players that can help this team get on track to a winning season, but several players will need to mature and buy into the system coach Williams is implementing.
Sequoyah Claremore Eagles Coach: JODY IAMS
Enrollment: 452 Schedule: Sept. 5 – vs. Perkins Sept. 12 – at Sperry Sept. 19 – vs. Metro Christian Sept. 26 – at Berryhill Oct. 3 – at Inola Oct. 10 – at Jay Oct. 16 – vs. Westville Oct. 24 – vs. Locust Grove Oct. 31 – at Keys Nov. 7 – vs. Sequoyah Tahlequah Last 5 Years: 2013 - 6-5 2012 - 7-6 2011- 5-5 2010 – 2-7 2009 – 10-3 OFFENSE Play hard and give 100% is the message of the Eagles entering 2014 as head coach Jody Iams enters his 16th season as head coach. “We got a bunch of hard nosed kids that understand the need for hard work,” said Iams. “Most of them are young by experience but want to prove they have what’s needed to win.” A contested battle to earn the starting spot at quarterback continues into the summer as Benny Sandecki (5-10, 175, Sr.) moves from wide receiver to compete against Johnny Pryor (5-9, 165, So.) and Tristan Diaz (5-11, 155, Fr.). “Sandecki understands how to battle under pressure,” said Iams. “Benny is probably the better passer while Johnny and Tristan have the speed to be dangerous running the ball.” The blue-collared approach to the Eagles’ running game falls to Michael Chambers (5-10, 185, Sr.) and Ryan Henson (5-10, 185, Sr.).
“Those two only know one was to play, all in,” said Iams. Another option at running back includes Miquel Fulgencio (6-1, 180, Fr.) who adds more speed and power to the attack. Doug Radley (5-10, 170, Sr.) returns to at wide receiver to join Grant Akin (6-5, 205, Jr.) at tight end. Tyler Richards (6-3, 300, Sr.) has drawn the attention of his head coach in the offensive line. “He’s worked hard in the weight room,” commended Iams, “Tyler is so much stronger than last year. And with his size, he can make a real difference up front.” DEFENSE The character of the Eagles’ defense remains hard nosed as young but determined players are ready for their time to fly. Austin Muns (5-9, 230, Jr.) brings a strong, physical effort at nose guard while Akin and Taylor Farley (5-11, 220, So.) line up at defensive end. Hunter Chaison (6-1, 195, So.) and Reese Robinette (6-1, 210, So.) give Iams reason to smile at the inside linebacker position. “Hunter and Reese have the skills you want there,” said Iams. “Good speed and size let them fill the gap as well as cover in space.” The tough minded play of Chambers and Henson at the outside linebacker gives the Eagles a solid unit in their 3-4 alignment. The secondary protection will include the aggressive play of Clay Moreland (5-9, 140, Jr.) and Radley. “It’s a young group with a lot of heart,” said Iams. “By the time we reach district play, I expect that we will discover our team identity and be in the chase for the playoffs.”

OFFENSE
Tag Gross leads the Dutch into the 2014 campaign with a less experienced team than he usually has but they do have good depth and talent. They have seven returning starters on offense, led by VYPE Top 100 Selection Corey Taylor (5-11, 200, Sr.) at running back. Corey was hobbled with some injuries last year, but still managed to gain 1,090 yards on 153 carries and eleven touchdowns. Look for Taylor to see a lot of action and for Gross to find ways to get him the ball in open space. Another talented player who got bit by the injury bug last year is Avery Gragg (6-2, 190, Sr.) at wide receiver. He is a good-sized target who is a raw talent that could really have a breakout season. Last year he pulled in 18 passes, gained 335 yards (24 yard average) yards and scored four touchdowns. The triggerman for the offense this year is Dakota Roush (5-10, 185, Jr.). He played receiver last year, scoring three touchdowns last year. Gross feels as if they should be able to run and throw the football and a mobile quarterback should add to their run game. They did lose two key offensive linemen, but he does have to big blocks to build on in Parker Coons (6-0, 290, Sr.) and Ben Harden (6-4, 280, Jr.). If the Dutch can develop some linemen to replace the ones that were lost to graduation, they can really make things happen offensively. DEFENSE

Corey Taylor keep the pressure on the opposing offenses from his defensive end postion. Alex Stanton (5-10, 200, Jr.) will be joining Armour on the line. These two will be looked upon by Gross to stop the running game. They have a lot of speed on the defensive side of the ball in Mathew Burke (6-1, 185, Sr.) and Nathan Solomon (6-0, 175, Jr.) patrolling the secondary. Burke had 45 tackles last season and three interceptions while Solomon had 15 tackles along with an interception. Brock Morgan (5-11, 200, Jr.) will be an outside linebacker in the Dutch’s 3-4 base defense. He had 28 tackles last season, four for losses along with a sack and an interception. The Southwest Preparatory Conference will be tough again this year and the Dutch also play local powers Cascia Hall and Lincoln Christian. Gross said, “We need to keep getting better each week. Since we are so inexperienced we have the potential to improve drastically each week.”

The Conqueror's, who finished the season 3110 and ranked fourth in 5A, must replace Megan Doran, who is now playing at Oral Roberts University, but they return a good team that looks poised to make another deep run in the state tournament. They will be led by a pair of seniors in Drew Hockaday (libero) and Bria Bergman (setter). Both these players are talented and experienced. Other players who will be looked upon to make an impact will be a pair of juniors, Sierra Holmes and Emerson Rictor who are both outside hitters. Josh Redmond (6-0, 210, Keats Calhoon Sr.) recorded 212 total tackles, 10 tackles for loss and two sacks last year and will play both outside linebacker and strong safety at times this year. Terry will also be a main cog on defense playing either defensive end or linebacker this year after making 120 tackles and seven sacks last year. Completing the Conquerors triumvirate is Luke Wehrli (5-11, 230, Sr.), who made 124 tackles last year to go along with three sacks. McLachlan will also play both ways this year starting at cornerback where he made 46 tackles and intercepted four passes last fall. Normally an outstanding infielder, Micayla has pitched the last two years, picking up eight wins in 2013. Offensively, Crow will be looked to provide lots of leadership and productivity, as she was the second leading hitter in 2013 with a .567 average while leading the team in RBI's with 24. Other key returning starters are junior Rachael Burns and sophomores Annabelle Glaub and Gracie Walker. Burns will assume the catching role this season as three-year starter Stephanie Boyls graduated last spring. Shaw totaled 460 yards rushing and scored 7 touchdowns last year in a backup role while Leak, who won the 100 and 200m dash as a sophomore, saw a majority of his play as a receiver in 2013. “We can do so many different things with these three,” said Alexander. “Jamal is hard to bring down with his strength and quickness. If you blink, you’ll miss Warren because of his speed and balance. Jordan gives us a third horse in the race.” Six starters return from last year’s 6A semi-finals team including size and strength in the offensive front line. at right tackle. The Tigers quarterback battle has been spirited between a quartet of challengers throughout spring and summer drills. Austin Gilmore (6-0, 195, Sr.) and Scott Gilkey (6-4, 195, Jr.) appear to have risen to the top of the depth chart. “Both of these guys are talented and mature young men,” said Alexander. “Austin has become a leader for the team and his work ethic and confidence is making a difference in the flow of the offense. Scott’s a true athlete with a rocket arm capable of throwing the ball on target 60 yards down field. ” Jordan Ware (6-1, 195, Sr.) and Zach Sallee (6-0, 175, Jr.) continue to make the choices challenging. “The competition level is fierce. Whoever ends up getting the nod will have earned it,” Alexander said. With a variety of personnel groups and multiple formations, the Tigers will have qualified talent at receiver. Tight end Trent Cantrell (6-1, 225, Sr.) is a big target with sure hands who Alexander expects to have a banner season. “He’s a possession type receiver,” said Alexander. “Trent’s capable of 45 catches and 12 touchdowns this year.” Adding the passing game stats will be two starters from Broken Arrow’s basketball team, Jeremiah Holliday (5-8, 160, Sr.) and Brendon Franklin (6-1, 180, Jr.). “Jeremiah’s quickness is evident and with a 38-inch vertical jump, he’ll make catches others might miss,” said Alexander. “Brendon’s explosiveness and athletic fundamentals are solid.” DEFENSE Broken Arrow’s defense will highlight the skills of a three-headed monster including VYPE Top 100 selection Markale Moses (5-10, 172, Sr.), Cody Harris (6-1, 182, Sr.) and Gage Kaiser (6-3, 220, Jr.) Described by coaches a shut-down corner, Moses has game changing skills evident of his nine pass interceptions during his high school career. “Markale competes all out on every snap,” said Alexander. “He’ll make plays other corners won’t.” Harris returns at safety after making

The “Driven” Athlete of the Month Markale Moses - Broken Arrow Senior Markale Moses is a varsity football player for the Broken Arrow Tigers. The starting defensive back is considered to be one of the top players at his position in the state and was recently named to the VYPE Top 100 placing him in the running for the Mr. Football Award given to the states best football player.
Head coach David Alexander said of Moses, “He’s a good player for us. Markale and our defense worked hard this offseason and we’re excited to see them get a chance to compete.”
At 5-foot-10 and 170 pounds Moses uses his speed to dominate opponents in the passing game, but his ability to make big hits and stop the run is his most improved aspect of his game.
But Moses doesn’t want all of the attention. He said several of his teammates should be recognized for their play and hard work. “Other players you should look for this season are Devon Johnson, Jordan Davis, Carder Key, Brendon Franklin and Scotty Gilkey.”
“I’ve had a great career at Broken Arrow. As a freshman I had six interceptions on varsity, an interception against Hoover, Ala and all of those great games against our biggest rival, Jenks,” said Moses. “This season I’m all in and our team is working hard to make this one count.”
Moses credits his mother for always being there. “She’s the real MVP. She’s into football more than I am.”
After high school Moses would like to continue his education in college and play football. Several schools are looking at Moses this season and signing day in February could be an exciting day for him and his family.

three interceptions a year ago. “He’s going to be our coach on the field,” notes Alexander. “Cody’s leadership is demonstrated by his never-ending effort. I’m confident in him making all the defensive calls.” During his sophomore campaign, Kaiser was almost unstoppable from his defensive end position totaling 64 tackles including 11 sacks. “Gage is a true athlete,” said Alexander noting Kaiser’s three sport success. “Gage knows what it takes to be a winner. He can contain and attack and his nose for the football is what you want at defensive end.” The Tigers’ efforts to replace its interior linebacker unit have created intense competition in practices. Carter Key (60, 200, So.) and Israel Tristan (6-0, 218, Sr.) draw praise from Alexander. “How we fill the linebacker positions will be a key,” said Alexander. “Carter has a unique ability to make plays and just needs more reps. Israel’s aggressiveness and foot speed lets him play downhill and side to side.” Tyler Hazelrigg (6-1, 202, Sr.) will also have major responsibilities at linebacker according to Alexander. “Tyler will have a big playbook. With his talents we get a strong rush from the edge combined with physical pass coverage.”
Jacob Fruechting is a two-way talent that the Tigers welcome to both sides of the lineup. “Jacob’s been the MVP of spring football,” said Alexander. “He’s a senior that’s accepting whatever responsibilities we put on his shoulders. Because of his athleticism, he’s going to get snaps at safety as well as creating plays on offense.” Broken Arrow’s 2014 schedule opens by playing three of their first four games at home. With the re-alignment of Class 6A football into two divisions, the Tigers are preparing for road trips under the Friday night lights. “It’s going to be extremely competitive in both districts of 6A-1,” said Alexander. “We’re going to see plenty of time away from home including four trips to the west side so we’ll have to be ready to play.” Does the two-tiered format of Class 6A football change the Tigers’ opportunities to win a state championship? “Nobody knows that answer now,” said Alexander. “What I have seen from our players is their understanding that hard work pays dividends and we’re going to take a no excuse approach to winning each and every game.”

But a 3-2 (23-25, 25-19, 8-25, 25-16, 15-10) loss against Booker T. Washington in a 6A regional tournament brought Broken Arrow's season to a close before advancing to the state tournament. Now Smith has shifted her focus to the 2014 campaign. By Ben Johnson
Lady Tigers Volleyball Gears up for a great season Bishop Kelley ended Broken Arrow's season in 2012. At the Class 6A state tournament in Shawnee, the Lady Tigers were dealt a first round exit by the eventual state champions. Things never got any better for Broken Arrow in 2013.
The Tigers played short-handed throughout much of the 2013 season and managed only 10 victories in 32 matches.
"We suffered some devastating season-ending injuries last season to three potential starters," Broken Arrow coach Kari Smith said. "And one key player didn't gain eligibility until late in the season."
Broken Arrow posted victories over Sand Springs and Owasso — when both teams were ranked sixth in Class 6A — while also knocking off 6A No. 9 By Ben Johnson
Broken Arrow has laid claim to 11 state championships in fastpitch softball and look for their first title since 2009 Five years seems like a long time ago. Now the Lady Tigers will try to buck the non-title trend in 2014. "Our goal is to play for the state championship each year," Broken Arrow coach Randall King said. Alexa The Lady Tigers will pursue a crown after a Class 6A semifinal loss to Southmoore in 2013. The 6-0 setback ended Broken Arrow's season at 33-7. "The lose to Southmoore in the semifinals last year was a tough loss," King said, "but that is not what motivates us." Leading the charge for Broken Arrow in 2014 will be a host of upperclassmen — all of which logged considerable amounts of playing time last season. Alexa Romero will split time between catcher and first base as a senior this year. In 2013, Romero collected team-highs in hits (50), home runs (nine) and runs batted in (58). Also providing pop will be Hannah Heinrichs, a senior outfielder. She collected 46 hits, 14 doubles, three triples, two home runs and 29 runs batted in last season. "We have four returning starters," she said. "Jaycie McElroy is a two-year starter at outside hitter, and she brings power, consistency and experience to the court. Libby Smith is a two-year starter at setter, and she also brings experience to our court in an important leadership position." Smith also mentioned two key contributors up front.
"Taylor Bailey is a returning starter at middle (blocker), and she will be a much more confident player this year," Smith said. "Mia Bledsoe is a oneyear starter, making a move from middle to outside (hitter). She brings a great deal of athletic ability to the court." Now Smith will hope to see two key components on the court this season. "We must play with more consistency and confidence," Smith said. Hoping her players remain healthy in 2014, Smith will also welcome back two players on the mend.
"We are looking forward to the return of Adeline Rudy in the middle and Emma Smith at (defensive specialist)," Smith said. "They bring maturity, leadership and experience to our team. The good
base and catcher. The junior infielder had 48 hits — 17 for extra bases — and 26 RBI in 2013. A pair of seniors, Caitlin Paolini and Maegan Rollow, will also be mainstays in the lineup. Paolini will play both middle infield spots, after hitting .287 with 13 runs batted in as a junior. Rollow will be in the outfield, and she posted a .404 average as a part-time starter last season. In the pitching circle will be Ashley Watts, a senior who went 22-5 with a 1.86 earned Romero run average last season. Other Broken Arrow players that figure to play key roles will be Michelle Sheppard (third base), Kaitlynn Monckton (outfield), Anna Wheeler (outfield), Kinzy Mathis (second base), Marcella McKinney (first base) and Hannah Reed (pitcher). King hopes the makeup of his roster can provide the key components to try and pull off a state championship. "There are some very good teams in 6A year in and year out," he said. "To have the chance to play for a state championship, you must play at a high level each and ever game. That means you have to play great defense, pitchers must hit spots, and each person in the lineup has to pick their teammates up throughout the season." In District 6A-4 play this year, Broken Arrow will compete with the likes of Owasso, Ponca City and
news is that some young players gained valuable playing time. Our hope is that, with this experience and the return of some injured players, we will improve on last year's mark." Justin Messner - Broken Arrow
Justin Messner is a senior at Broken Arrow High School where he’s a member of the varsity cheer squad. Messner's involvement in cheer started in the eighth grade when he became a spotter on the eighth grade squad, but didn’t start cheering until his freshman year. Messner has maintained a weighted GPA of 4.16, while taking AP Math and Science. “Math and Science are my two favorite subjects,” said Messner. “My mother and older sister have helped me stay focused in school. But the support from my family, teammates and coaches have helped me stay focused in my experience as a student-athlete.” Messner is looking forward to his senior year, but is making plans for life after high school. “I plan to cheer in college and to get my master’s degree. As for what I am going to major in, I am still debating on a couple of different options,” said Messner.
Broken Arrow has won the last two state championships in Co-Ed cheer and Messner is excited for the opportunity to become a three-time champion. But campus life at Broken Arrow is what Justin loves the most. “The best thing about Broken Arrow is that with such a large school you are given a broader spectrum of extra curricular activities and clubs to join.” For his commitment to Broken Arrow High School, his education and his team, Justin Messner is the Huntington Academic Athlete of the Month.

Athlete of the Month Kelsey Bottomley – Broken Arrow As a freshman last season Broken Arrow runner Kelsey Bottomley immediately made an impact for the Lady Tigers cross country team finishing in 18th place overall at the Class 6A state meet with a time of 12:16.21. During track season Bottomley continued her fantastic freshman campaign by qualifying for the 6A state meet in both the 1600 and 3200-meter runs. At the regional in Tahlequah Bottomley placed sixth in the 1600 and fourth in the 3200 but unfortunately couldn’t find her way to the podium in either event at state. Charles Page A good nucleus returns for the Lady Sandites who made it to the Class 6A state tournament last season. Seniors Breanna Bill and Bridget Montgomery will be key leaders along with juniors Kennedy Salyers, Jessica Schuler, Cody Cheatham, Kali Mallory and Caley Thompson. The Lady Sandites also will count on sophomores Jessica Collins, Rachel Blair and Sydney Pennington to make quality plays this season. “We have quality players. We don’t have the numbers we have had in the past but the kids we do have work very hard,” head coach Shelli Brown said.
Lincoln Christian A mix of dominant pitching and a lineup that is solid top to bottom has the Lady Bulldogs poised to make a run at a state tournament this season. Handling the pitching duties will be junior Adrianna Fuls who won 27 games last year, struck out 148 hitters and posted a 2.53 ERA and an opponent’s batting average of .176. On the offensive side of things the duo of Brooklyn Berido and Taylor Nelson will lead the way hitting in the three and four-hole respectively. Speedster Brooke Addington will set the table for the two power hitters in the leadoff spot while Gabby Thomas also uses her speed to her advantage at the top end of the lineup

BISHOP KELLEY A string of six straight state championships came to a halt for Bishop Kelley in 2013. The Lady Comets' bid for a 17th title in school history was derailed by a 3-2 loss to Edmond North in the Class 6A semifinals in 2013. Bishop Kelley will now look to fill the voids left by Josie Gandall and Leslie Atherton, who both graduated and went on to play Division I volleyball at St. Louis University and the University of Oklahoma, respectively. Five seniors, Mary Arndt, Catabrean Baumann, Lexie Livingston, Megan Parham and Justine Pelger, will take the reigns for Bishop Kelley in 2014. Arndt returns as a right-side hitter, where she was third for the Comets with 168 kills in 2013. Baumann will return at setter after posting 986 assists as a junior. At libero, Parham had 452 digs for the Comets last season. Livingston and Pelger will both be key assets as utility players all over the court. Another key component will be junior outside hitter Phoebe Lowe Jr., who was fourth for Bishop Kelley in kills despite injury troubles in 2013. "We typically lost a good number of seniors, as we have a deep program," Bishop Kelley coach Jerri Berna said. "However, we also feel confident that players who contributed last year, and others who have gained experience with our younger teams, can fill the voids we have. Our seniors are very excited to take over the reigns of our program this year."
REJOICE CHRISTIAN A 3-1 victory over Weatherford qualified Rejoice Christian for the Class 4A semifinals in 2013. But that's as far as the Lady Eagles would advance, after being eliminated from the state tournament with a 3-1 defeat against Elgin. If Rejoice Christian is to claim its first state championship, it'll have to do so with Makenzie Danley and Serena Nicholls leading the way. Danley, a senior and three-year starter, will be a setter, a year after leading Rejoice Christian in digs and passing percentage. Nicholls will return at middle blocker, where she paced the Eagles with a team-high in blocks while posting second-best team numbers in kills and service aces. Rejoice Christian coach Wally Poplin just hopes his team can continue to improve after an impressive showing in 2013. "We will be very young this year, but I think we are talented and hope to be factor by playoff time," Poplin said. "We hope to build on last year's Class 4A semifinal appearance. We play a really tough schedule for a small school to get ready for regionals
Regent Prep
Catoosa and state."
REGENT PREP Private schools have made a living out of dominating volleyball among the OSSAA ranks for years now. At the same time, there's been a private school from Tulsa — located just north of 91st Street on Memorial — forming a dynasty in the Oklahoma Christian School Athletic Association. That institution is non other than Regent Preparatory School. The south Tulsa private school has won the last four OCSAA state championships, all while playing OSSAA-based teams in the regular season. Now Regent Prep will transition to OSSAA play this season. "We are anxious to see if our title run will continue," Regent Prep coach Michael Christie said. "Even though we are new to the OSSAA, we have been competing against OSSAA schools for the last couple of seasons. Last year, our record against OSSAA state playoff teams was 6-1." Leading the charge for Regent Prep in 2014 will be Madeline Drake, a senior and a Northwestern State (La.) commit who had 432 kills, 49 blocks, 43 aces and 284 digs last season. Alison Ramsey, Sarah Minnich and Paige Panter will also be a part of the senior-laden attack for Regent Prep. Ramsey and Minnich had 297 and 248 kills, respectively, in 2013. Mykaela Mazzei, a sophomore, will be Regent Prep's defensive specialist after a 412-dig campaign a year ago. "The key to our season will be health," Christie said. "If our team is healthy, I think we can compete with anyone in the state."
JENKS TROJANS Jenks is coming off a Class 6A semifinal final finish in 2013, and coach Tanna Smith has reason for optimism in 2014. The Lady Trojans return a wealth of talent, headlined by Lacy Beeler, Paige Phillips, Abby Migliore, Raegan Poole and Karen Montes. "Paige is the reigning veteran of the group," Smith said. "She has been a part of varsity since she was a freshman. I have only
recently really been able to get to know the damage that she can cause offensively and defensively." Beeler, Migliore will provide pop up front, with Beeler as an outside hitter and Migliore at blocker. "Lacy Beeler is still fairly new to the game, but she has a live arm," said Smith, whose club went 22-14 in 2013, a season that was ended by eventual state champion Edmond Santa Fe with a 3-0 decision in Bixby. "Lacy also will bring her addictive personality that is fun for all to be around." Montes and Poole will collectively handle the defensive duties for the Trojans. But Smith's contribution pool doesn't stop there. It also includes Natalie Schelbar (outside hitter), Jamie Poe (middle blocker), Madilynn Hays (middle blocker), Cassidy Alexander (outside hitter), Alisen Hansen (outside hitter), Darian Parsons (setter) and Natalie Mikels (setter). And after coming so close to appearing in the state championship match, Smith said the offseason has been all about patching the few areas that hindered Jenks in 2013. "Right now, we are just polishing and fine-tuning the things we didn't do well last year," Smith said. "And hopefully we can be more efficient this season."
CATOOSA Catoosa's final record in 2013 was a tad bit deceiving. The Lady Indians finished up their season at 23-21, but several of those losses were to statetournament teams in all three classifications. And sure enough, Catoosa's tenure in 2013 was halted in the Class 4A quarterfinals in a 3-0 loss to eventual state champion Mount Saint Mary. Now Catoosa will look to improve upon its state-tournament showing with several returning players in 2014. Taylor Clay and Taylor Hensley will both be seniors at middle hitter/blocker and outside hitter/defense, respectively. Yesenia Velazques will also be integral as a junior at libero. Seniors, Mallory Jackson (outside hitter/blocker), Jamie Surine (outside hitter/blocker) and Hannah Sipe (setter), will all return at key positions, and Sarah Robertson will provide assistance to Sipe as another setter. "We should be a much more experienced team this year," Catoosa coach Carolyn Replogle said. "We have seven returning players from last year's squad that either played all the way around or were key play players. AUGUST 2014
