Bixby Wins First Gold Spartans dominate 6A-II playoffs on their way to the title.

In the first game of the season the Bixby Spartans fell to eventual 6A-I state champion Jenks by a score of 66-20. That loss left such a bad taste in the mouths of the Spartans players and coaches that they reeled off 12 wins in a row and claimed the inaugural Class 6A-II gold ball. In those 12 wins Bixby outscored its opponents by a combined score of 541-217. In the playoffs that number was just as onesided with the Spartans posting 137 total points and allowing just 63. In the first round of the playoffs Bixby crushed the Stillwater Pioneers 61-28. In that game the Spartans were led by quarterback Tanner Griffin who threw for six touchdowns in the contest. Star running back Nic Roller also had a big night rushing for 161 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries. In the semifinals Bixby blasted Sand Springs by a score of 41-14 behind

another monster effort from Roller. The senior back recorded a then season-high in carries toting the ball 33 times for 148 yards and four touchdowns. Roller’s seasonhigh wouldn’t stand long though as he again turned in a dominating effort in the finals to help the Spartans beat the Lawton Wolverines 35-21 in the championship game. In the win over Lawton, Roller carried the ball a whopping 43 times and rushed for 233 yards and two touchdowns. The Spartans also got a clutch performance from defensive lineman Austin Grotts

in the game. Taking on blue chip lineman Jalin Barnett, Grotts still managed to get into the backfield and record two sacks in the game. Griffin also turned in a big night as he completed 22-of 31 passes for 220 yards and a touchdown.

1-2-3, As Good as can be Trojans outscore opponents 104-35 en route to 6A-I title. After finishing the regular season with an 8-2 overall record the Jenks Trojans entered the playoffs with one mission; bring home yet another gold ball. The first step to accomplishing that goal came in the form of a first round matchup with the Southmoore Sabercats. In that game Jenks romped to a 41-7 win behind a monster game from running back Darwin Thompson. The senior back ran for 213 yards and one touchdown on 22 carries and single-handedly outgained the entire Southmoore offense; which was held to just 163 total yards.

DECEMBER 2014

After the win over Southmoore the Trojans advanced to the semifinals to take on an Owasso Rams team that had beaten Jenks 7-6 earlier in the season. Jenks avenged that loss in dominating fashion by blasting the Rams 42-14 behind a very balanced offensive attack. In the passing game Jenks quarterback Cooper Nunley completed 16-of-21 passes for 201 yards and three touchdowns. A good portion of those passes went to star receiver Carson Epps who pulled down seven catches for 105 yards and a touchdown. Thompson also had a big game in the semifinals by rushing

for 103 yards and one touchdown on 17 carries. Finally in the championship game Jenks avenged its other loss of the season by beating the Union Redskins 21-14. Nunley ran for two touchdowns in the title tilt and threw for another as he connected with Dillon Stoner late in the fourth quarter putting the Trojans ahead for good. The Jenks defense, led by linebacker Austin Quillen, also had a big hand in the win over Union. Quillen made 10 tackles and had three sacks in the game as he smothered Union quarterback Mason Farquar all night long.

Stephanie Wilburn Beggs Softball How long have you been involved in FCA? “It all started when I lead FCA in middle school. Though at the time, I was very shy and quiet, and decided to be bold and lead a FCA meeting my eighth grade year. I felt as if that was the first step in which God was molding me into the leader I am today. My junior year and this year, I took the role of teaching FCA and organizing others to give others the opportunity to speak and give their testimonies.”

How has FCA made an impact in your life on the field and off? “As an athlete, I focus on the course that has been set before me and I “run with endurance, keeping my eyes on the prize.” Sports have taught me many things like teamwork, self-control, and taught me to build endurance. I also apply that to the game of life. You need to join together with others of the same mission and devote yourself to build those teammates up. . I have come to realize that both as an athlete and student; it’s so crucial and important to live out what God’s word says through and through and to stay connected to Him daily.”

How have you used your beliefs or association with FCA to help others or spread the word? “Before each softball game, I would share scripture or a motivational quote with each girl to get them pumped up and ready to go. During track season, there are many opportunities to lead devotions with my teammates, because we spend a lot of time together outside of practice and meets. Both on and off the field or track, I make it my mission to encourage others to do their best and give it their all, but to give glory to who really deserves it.” What is your favorite scripture? “But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when the heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” Jeremiah 17:7-8

DECEMBER 2014

Austin Quillen had a fantastic season this fall for the Jenks Trojans football team. As a star on the Jenks defense Quillen proved he was willing to do whatever it took to help the team win. After a 1-2 start to the season Quillen moved from his spot at safety up to linebacker; a move that ultimately made the difference in the Trojans being able to claim their third-straight gold ball. Overall this year Quillen showcased his ability as a versatile athlete and finished with 80 total tackles and four

sacks. Quillen also got some time in Jenks’ goal line package and rushed for six touchdowns on 24 carries. Quillen’s best effort of the season may have also come on the biggest stage as he dominated the Class 6A-1 title game and helped the Trojans avenge an earlier loss to Union. In the title tilt Quillen had 10 tackles, three sacks, two forced fumbles and two other tackles for loss. For his effort in the title game and the season as a whole Austin Quillen is the Jenks Athlete of the Month.

Character Counts Athlete

We salute the student-athletes who make us proud on and off the field

Natalie Schelbar - Jenks Volleyball

Jenks High School volleyball senior Natalie Schelbar is the definition of quality character, humility and positive attitude when it comes to athletics and academics. Her character has helped her both overcome and achieve great obstacles in volleyball, while also remaining humble and content with whatever life throws at her. “Having a humble attitude truly helps in times of crisis or stress, and because of this, I was able to stay calm and collected during key moments and was able to help me team. Constantly thinking of helping others and furthering my team rather than bringing glory to myself was the most important part for me,” Schelbar said. A faith-based attitude has also helped shape Schelbar into the polished athlete and young woman she is; she attributes her victories and becoming who she is today to God.“Not only in sports, but in everyday life, I desire to live my life in complete obedience to God’s will, and hope to glorify Him through the building of character,” Schelbar said.

Recently awarded the Ditolla-Cooper Award on her volleyball team, Schelbar knows that the hours, sweat and exhaustion is all worth it in the end. Her hard work for the past four years of high school volleyball finally led to a glorious ending; the 2014 state champions.

“Winning state made all the hard parts of volleyball worth it, ten-fold. I couldn’t think of a better way to end my volleyball career,” Schelbar said. Schelbar plans to attend KU next fall and couldn’t imagine going anywhere else, as it is her father’s alma mater.

Champions do not become champions when they win the event, but in the hours, weeks, months and years they spend preparing for it. The victorious performance itself is merely the demonstration of their championship character." - T. Alan Armstrong

TULSA BASKETBALL PREVIEW

JENKS TROJANS Website: www.jenksps.org GIRLS Mandy Nightingale 13-14 Record: 4-20

Outlook: With three returning starters the Jenks Trojans will look to improve upon last season and will look to point guard Jensen Prince (5-4, Jr.) who started as a sophomore. Prince averaged 7.8 points, two assists, and two steals per game last year and will be counted upon to provide not only production for the Lady Trojans but also leadership for a young team. Coach Mandy Nightingale, in her third year, will call upon a pair of seniors to add leadership in Mackenzie Phipps (5-5, Sr.) and Abby Migliore (5-10, Sr.). Averaging just under five points per game last year, Migliore provides good length from her forward spot and will look to increase her rebound numbers

this season. Phipps should see her point totals improve this year but she also gives the Trojans a good rebounder from the backcourt. At the other two backcourt spots will be Sarah Thiessen (5-4, So.) and Rachel Norman (5-5, Jr.) both who averaged 2.3 points per game last season. Coach Nightingale expects the competition for the starting spots to be fierce with a number of young players that saw playing time last year returning with an added year of experience under their belt. “I’m very excited about this season. We will have a fairly young team, but they are competitive and are working to improve everyday. I think we will be able to surprise a lot of teams this year,” discussed Nightingale. BOYS Clay Martin 13-14 Record: 15-8

Outlook: Entering his 12th season at the helm coach Clay Martin is excited to see his team hit the floor led by combo guard TJ Washington at the point guard spot. Washington (5-10, Jr.) averaged 11 points and seven assists last season and coach Martin expect more from his junior point man who has continued to improve in all areas of his game. Joining Washington in the backcourt will be Hutch Peterson (6-1, Sr.) and Tre’ Petit (6-1, Sr.). Peterson lives up to his bloodline as he can stretch the floor with his shooting ability from behind the arc but also is a glue player for coach Martin’s squad. Terrell Marshall will come off the bench for the Trojans and allow Washington to move off the ball at times giving Jenks a different look offensively. “This team loves to play together,” Martin said about his experienced team. “We are very

excited to watch this team improve and grow.” The front court will bring a lot of size with Isaac Gilton (6-6, Jr.) and Cole Surrett (6-5, So.) expected to lead the way for Jenks on the front line. Gilton averaged 7.5 points per game while pulling down 5.5 rebounds. He has added bulk to his frame during the offseason and showed improvement as the season progressed last year resulting in a high ceiling for the post man. Joining the front court at times will be Carson Epps who will come from the gridiron to the hardwood and is a versatile defender for coach Martin’s squad. OWASSO RAMS Website: www.owasso.k12.ok.us

GIRLS Matt Sweeney (3rd year) 13-14 Record: 4-19 Outlook: With the return of last year’s starting five intact and the development of younger talented players, the Lady Rams are ready to capture the attention of their Class 6A opponents. A trio of seniors including 5-6 guards Jackie Ball (6.7ppg/3.1 reb), 5-6 Riley Vancuren (5.4ppg/4.3reb/1.9asst) and 5-11 forward Carlie Morris (5.7ppg/6.1reb) will provide leadership through basketball knowledge along with the return of junior guards 5-7 Rachel Skalnik (8.9ppg/3.6reb/1.7asst) and 5-3 Jordan Kunka (5.6ppg/2.6reb/2.1steals). Expected to make an impact to the Lady Rams’ success with 5-9 freshman Mya Bhinhar, which according to head coach Matt Sweeney, can post up for points on the blocks as well as score off the dribble. Added depth off the bench will come from 5-8 junior Michalla O’Connell and 5-7 Terrya Milton. “Competition in practice is fierce,” said Sweeney, who begins his third season as head coach. “The group

of kids we have returning have a year of game time experience and the younger kids have plenty of talent and confidence to push them.” Jackie Ball 5-6 F Sr. Carlie Morris 5-11 F Sr. Riley Vancurren 5-6 G Sr. Jordan Kunka 5-3 G Jr. Rachel Skalnik 5-7 G Jr. Michalla O’Connell 5-8 F Jr. Mya Bhinhar 5-9 F Fr. BOYS Mark Vancuren (11th year) 13-14 Record: 21-6

Outlook: Owasso has risen near the top of Class 6A basketball the past two seasons after reaching the state quarterfinals last year and semifinals in 2013. And, with the return of three starters including VYPE Top 100 standout Shake Milton, Owasso has the recipe for another successful season. Milton, a 6-5 point guard who signed early with Southern Methodist University, returns to the point after averaging 29.7 points, 7.2 rebounds and 4.0 assist last season. Adding even more skill at guard will be 6-3 junior Kinzer Lambert (10.3ppg/3.3reb/3.0 asst) to give head coach Mark Vancuren plenty of reasons to smile.

Go Rams!

“There’s no denying how much Shake contributes on either end of the floor. When you can put one of the best players in Oklahoma on the court in Shake Milton, you’ve got chances to win a few games,” smiled Vancuren, who begins his 11th season at Owasso. “When you add the skill and athleticism of a player like Kinzer Lambert, you double your chances.” Michael Anderson, a 6-5 forward, is a three year starter that contributes much more than his 5.4 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. “Michael brings his defensive end mentality from football to the basketball court and creates a dominating physical style play on both ends of the court.” Blake Hamar, a 6-3 guard and Max Seefluth, a 6-5 swingman, give the Rams plenty of optimism to once again reach the final eight teams in the chase for the Class 6A championship and potentially claim the school’s first boys’ state

title. Vancurren also welcomes a quartet of players including seniors Nic Thompson, Craig Holman and Matt Sanders along with junior DeShanon Lowe to create added energy in a “6th man” role. With play in the paint a desired strength, Vancuren will also rely upon 6-4 junior forward to give help on the boards. “For the third year in a row, we have the potential to be a very competitive team,” said Vancuren. Max Seefluth

Owasso's Max Seefluth performs on and off the court. Senior Ram’s basketball player Max Seefluth is the Academic Athlete of the Month for VYPE. Seefluth has a 3.96 GPA, clearly placing him as a leader academically, but Seefluth also stands out at school and sports. As the leader for the “best student section in America,” an active Student Council, FCA and Forensics member, Seefluth stays busy supporting his school outside of basketball season. He is involved in the community with the Little League, Special Olympics, John 3:16 and pages at the Oklahoma State Capitol. Seefluth plans to play basketball at the University of Emory in Atlanta, Georgia, next fall and major in political science,

and possibly attend law school soon after. BROKEN ARROW TIGERS Website: www.baschools.org GIRLS Mike Hughes 13-14 Record: 28-0

Outlook: A year ago the Lady Tigers cruised to the Class 6A state championship behind the play

Alexis Gaulden Union Redskins

of a veteran lineup led by Toree Thompson who is now on the roster at Ole Miss. This year with two retuning starters head coach Mike Hughes said that expectations haven’t been lowered at all. “The expectations are still very high for this year’s team even with losing the players from last year. Role players from last year will take the lead as it is their turn to carry the load,” Hughes said. Chief among the Lady Tigers’ leaders this year will be three-year starter Alexis Gaulden (5-6, Jr.) at guard. Last year Gaulden averaged 10 points a game and has not only improved offensively but has also improved so much defensively that Hughes expects her to lead his team in blocks this season. Jalise Smallwood (5-8, So.) also comes into the fold in the backcourt this year after not playing at Broken Arrow last year. On the inside things will revolve around center Taylor Jones (6-2, Sr.) who averaged 5.1 points and 3.2 rebounds a game last year. Darian

Website: www.unionps.org GIRLS Jim Stacy 13-14 Record: 16-10

Outlook: Jim Stacy is starting his 15th season as head coach for the Lady Redskins with an inexperienced lineup. Stacy is returning one starter; sophomore Taylor Malham (5-5) will return at point guard after starting last season as a freshman. Fellow sophomore Michaela Bethel (6-0) will start in the post for Stacy. Joining Bethel in the post is 6-foot1 senior Hailey Chamberlin. The Lady Redskins will need their post players to make an impact rebounding the basketball. Stacy will rely heavily on Malham to lead this inexperienced squad. “We are young and inexperienced this year,” Stacy said. “You can expect us to play hard, of that we are certain. We will grow and improve throughout the season and be a much improved ball club come playoff time.”

Outlook: Rudy Garcia starts his 20th season at the helm of the Union Redskins fresh off of a victory against Putnam City West in the Class 6A state championship game. However, Garcia is only returning one player who played in that game last season. This season will present new challenges for the veteran coach. Playing time will have to be earned this season as Garcia tries to build his lineup around sophomore forward Ethan Chargois (6-8). Chargois, who is already gathering Division 1 interest, is the only player returning who played in last year’s championship game. Fellow sophomore Adrian Rodriguez (6-5) will join Chargois down in the post. The two sophomores will be asked to protect the paint and rebound efficiently for the Redskins. The

Jackson (5-9, Jr.) and Tierra Jones (5-6, Sr.) will start at the forward spots this year and round out the starting lineup. Jackson missed last season due to injury but started as a freshman while Jones averaged 4.4 points and 4.1 rebounds a game last year. Outlook: ‘We have a lot more size across the board from a year ago and this team should have a deeper rotation. The season is going to depend on how our younger talent comes around and how fast our two starters from last year get back into basketball shape after playing football in the fall,” is how Broken Arrow head coach Beau Wallace describes his team and where they will stack up this year. The Tigers’ biggest impact player this year according to Wallace will be forward Trenton Cantrell (6-0, Sr.) because of his versatility in cleaning the glass, handling the ball and shooting the ball well.

backcourt will be brand new. Senior Tre’von Rucker will play point guard. Junior Nile Felton (6-2), who is new to Union, will be asked to contribute immediately. Senior Robert Ellis will take over the third guard slot. “Playing time will be wide open for these guys,” head coach Garcia said. “We are going to have to grow up quick.”

Last season Cantrell averaged 10.8 points and 6.0 rebounds per game and will need to improve those numbers this year as a senior. Guard Josh Holliday (5-7, Sr.) is also back this season after averaging 11.7 points, 2.2 assists and 3.3 rebounds per game a year ago. Athlete of the Month Ethan Chargois – Union Basketball

After winning the Class 6A state tournament last year the Union Redskins don’t have any full-time starters coming back this season. That would be a huge dark cloud for most teams but not for the Redskins and head coach Rudy Garcia. The reason that cloud isn’t as dark and isn’t as big is sophomore power forward Ethan Chargois. A big, strong, athletic post player with a soft touch around the rim; Chargois will score in bunches this year. While Chargois may not be known to the casual basketball fan in the area, the 6-8 forward also is already drawing attention from several DI programs across the nation. For his effort on the hardwood to become a major player to watch in the area and more importantly lead the Redskins to yet another successful season Ethan Chargois is the Lewis Roofing Athlete of the Month.

GIRLS Krista Binam (1st year) 13-14 Record: 10-13 Outlook: The Lady Spartans seek to rebound to among the top teams in Class 6A basketball as Krista Binam takes charge as head coach with a trio of returning starters. Points in the paint will be an emphasis for Binam’s squad as 5-11 junior forward Sydney Stout returns to the blocks after leading the Lady Spartan’s scoring as a sophomore. Senior guard Karlie Owens, a defensive specialist, is one of a talented group of guards that Binam will rely upon to put points on the board along with 5-11 junior Addison Richards, which according to Binam, is poised for a breakout campaign. Binam also expects contribution from the younger players including 5-8 freshman guard Maddie Bittle and 5-6 sophomore Cassidy Sloan. “Playing in Class 6A is tough every night,” admits Binam, “so we’ll have to learn from every game and each opponent. This group of girls has a solid basketball IQ and that will be a plus even though experience wise we’re going to start the year as a young squad that will get stronger as the season moves along.” Sydney Stout 5-11 F Jr. Addison Richards 5-11 G Jr. Karlie Owens 5-7 G Sr. Maddie Bittle 5-8 G Fr. Senior forwards Zach Richwine and Glen Galvin, also had minutes last season that the Spartans will try to expand into success this year. Veteran head coach Scott Padek,

The 2013 state champions were set to swarm this season with all five starters until Colorado University signee and VYPE Top 100 selection Makenzie Ellis suffered a torn

ACL. The loss leaves head coach Annette Kennedy seeking to replace the 12.2 points and 6.2 rebounds productivity. The cast of talent remains solid including 5-10 center Kendriana Washington rotating around a trio of guards include 5-6 senior Cori Williams as well a 5-6 juniors Taylor Sells and Aysia Evans. Senior guard Aubrey Thomas will add quickness and scoring in the Lady Hornets up-tempo offense and pressure defensive attack. “No doubt, the loss of Makenzie changes things,” said Kennedy, “and it just breaks you heart whenever that happens but especially to a senior. Redmond who enters his third season as head coach. Three starters will once again wear the orange and black this season including Oral Roberts signee and VYPE Top 100 standout Chris Miller. The Hornets will count upon Miller to repeat his double digit 15.4 points and 13.1 rebounds productivity again this season. Adding to the physical and up-tempo style of play will be 6-3 forward Tariq Bitson, who totaled 10.2 points and 7.0 rebounds, joining 5-10 sophomore point guard R.J. Fuqua, who brings an explosive move to score or set up opportunities at the rim for his teammates. A year ago, Fuqua delivered 8.3 points and 8.0 assists per contest. The group of guards is a strong suit for Booker T including the efforts of 5-10 junior Khobe Austin-Johnson, 6-1 senior Tyjuan Johnson and 5-11 senior Thais Montgomery. “In addition to the athleticism of this team, we’re a team that’s unselfish,” said Redmond. “There are a lot of very good basketball teams in Class 6A requiring every team to play their best each night. SAND SPRINGS SANDITES Website: www.sandites.org GIRLS Dustin Morrow 13-14 Record: 10-14

Outlook: Three starters return for the Lady Sandites leading to the hope that fans could see Sand Springs make a deep run into the postseason. “We have a mix of three really experienced players and everybody else is young and inexperienced; but we do have a lot of potential,” said head coach Dustin Morrow. Chief among those returners is the versatile Sydney Pennington (5-9, So.). Morrow describes Pennington as a great defender and says she can finish in transition as well as anybody in the state. Pennington’s 15.6 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.1 steals per game are definitely evidence that she is truly a special type of player. Morgan Pennington (5-5, Sr.) and Cierra Scott (5-7, Jr.) also both return for the Lady Sandites this year at guard after combining to average 11.9 points and 6.5 rebounds per game a year ago. New to the starting lineup will be center Gloria Mutiri (6-1, Fr.) and guard Jessica Collins (5-7, So.). Lauren Foster (5-10) will give the Lady Sandites a spark of the bench as an athletic forward that can change the course of a game with her defense. Sydney Pennington 5-9 G/F So. Outlook: A young team with just one returning starter, the Sandites will be looking to improve on last season’s 8-16 record with a wealth of talented young players. Two of those young players are guards Colt Savage (6-3, Fr.) and Brooks Haddock 6-2, Fr.) according to head coach Eric Savage. Mack Thompson (5-8, So.) averaged four points per game last year and is another young guard on the Sand Springs roster. Evan Perry (5-10, Sr.) does bring a good deal

of experience and leadership to the backcourt after averaging nine points a game last year as a junior. Kyle Keener (6-6, So.) will also play a major role this season after missing significant time with a shoulder injury last season. “We will be young with only three seniors on the roster. Look for big things from a healthy Kyle Keener. Talented freshmen Brooks Haddock and Colt Savage will make major contributions and can score from anywhere,” coach Savage said. Outlook: Last year the Lady Chieftains made it all the way to the Class 6A state tournament by knocking of Booker T. Washington in the area tournament. This season Sapulpa brings back four starters including VYPE Top 100 selection Brice Calip (5-8, Jr.) who will start at guard. Already being recruited by Arkansas, Tulsa and Oklahoma State among others Calip averaged 12 points per game last year but also brings a wealth of leadership and defensive ability. Other key players on the perimeter this year will be Whitney Kamies (5-3, Jr.), Isabella Bacon (5-7,

So.) and Amber Lewis (5-8, Jr.). Bacon averaged 5.2 points per game last year while Kamies and Lewis combined to average 3.9. The biggest x-factor though could be KiKi Boyer (5-6, Sr.) who has endured multiple ACL surgeries but began to come into her own late last year according to coach Calip. A guard-heavy team Sapulpa won’t have a lot of bodies inside but Keysha Streater (5-9, Sr.) who averaged 9.0 points a game last year, does give the Lady Chieftains strength and length in the paint. “I’m very excited for this team. We return 90 percent of our state quarterfinal team. I believe we will be better this year both offensively and defensively,” coach Calip said. “We lost an outstanding three-point shooter in Taylor Henderson but I think we gain physicality and strength plus a little more athleticism in KiKi Boyer. We mostly played juniors and sophomores late last year and I think their added maturity and experience will pay big dividends this season.” Brice Calip 5-8 G Jr. Whitney Kamies 5-3 G Jr. KiKi Boyer 5-6 G Sr. Keysha Steater 5-9 F Sr. Isabella Bacon 5-7 G So. Amber Lewis 5-8 G Jr. BOYS Conley Phipps 13-14 Record: 7-17

Outlook: Conley Phipps takes over as the head coach of the Chieftains this year looking to improve on last year’s 7-17 overall record. With just two starters returning that may be a bit of an uphill climb for Phipps and company but the firstyear head coach is confident. “We lost our two best players to graduation but we have some experience returning. We feel good about our young players,” Phipps said. Offensively Sapulpa will count on an inside-out attack centered around forward Alex Ogunseye

(6-5, Jr.) and guard Colin Belveal (5-11, Sr.). A big man who can score inside or from up to 15 feet out, Ogunseye averaged 4.2 points per game last year while Belveal is a shooter with immense range that sat out last season as a transfer. Guards Detrick Johnson (6-0, Jr.), Ben Adams (6-5, Sr.) and Keenan Balance (5-10, So.) will all also see major playing time this year. Outlook: The Lady Comets finished last season with 10 total wins but lost four starters due to graduation leaving them with a brand new look for this season. With the abundance of youth that peppers her roster head coach Jade Allison expects her team to improve greatly from the beginning of the season to the end. “We are going to be very young, but should see a ton of growth as the season progresses,” Allison said. One face very familiar to Lady Comets fans will be forward Leah Colon (5-10, Jr.) who averaged 10 points and 6.0 rebounds per game as a sophomore. Allison describes Colon as a very hard worker who has been an instrumental part of the Lady Comets team ever since her freshman season. Also working at forward this year will be Kendra Poarch (5-8, Sr.). On the perimeter the leader of the pack will be Maggie Cooper (5-8,

Outlook: After winning 20 games and advancing to the Class 5A semifinals last season the Comets are once again hoping to secure a gold ball this year. Helping the Comets achieve that goal this year are two returning starters and another impact player who missed all of last season due to an injury. Chief among those returners is guard and VYPE Top 100 selection Josh Limes (6-1, Sr.). Limes was the team’s second leading scorer and rebounder last season with 10.7 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. Also back this season is forward Chase Irwin (6-3, Sr.) who averaged 7.5 points and 6.5 rebounds last year. Marshall Thorpe (6-8, Sr.) missed all of last year with a back injury but according to Limes will be instrumental in helping the Comets make another deep playoff run. Guards Tate Adams (5-11, Sr.) and Cole Murphy are also new to the starting lineup this year and will need to adjust to their new roles quickly as the Comets navigate a tough Frontier Conference schedule.

Stephanie Shaw discussed the outlook of her squad “we are a very young team with no seniors and might struggle early. However we return three starters including our leading scorer and two juniors that have started on varsity since their freshman year.” That leading scorer is sophomore guard Lauren Chancellor (5-9, So.) that broke onto the scene as a freshman with 12.6 points, six rebounds, 1.4 assists and two steals. Coach Shaw and her staff will look towards the sophomore to carry even more of the load in scoring this year with her ability to create off the dribble. Juniors Bailey Steckline (5-10, Jr.) and Monica Taylor (5-3, Jr.) return with varsity experience as starters. Taylor is a great three point shooter that can get on a hot streak quickly while Steckline is a solid player that averaged 3.3 points and 2.6 rebounds per game last season. Forward Brylee Brasher (5-7, Jr.) is another junior that will see an increased role for the Lady Zebras. Keep an eye on point guard Skylar Muncy (5-2, So.) who pushes the ball offensively for Claremore and does an excellent job directing the squad but must be respected as a shooter. Coach Shaw likes the ability of her young team to shoot the ball from every position forcing opponents to respect every player on the court.

Outlook: After a sub-.500 season last year third year head coach Tommy Nolan and his squad has put in the work to position themselves for a better 2014-15 campaign. “Our kids have prepared and worked hard in the offseason and are very excited about the upcoming year,” explained Nolan. “Countless hours spent in the gym and weight room will hopefully pay dividends for the upcoming 201415 season.” Nolan will look toward senior leadership especially in the early season and forward Reid Joyner (63, Sr.) has progressed into a good player. After averaging eight points and six rebounds a year ago, Joyner will provide a senior presence for the Zebras. He’ll be surrounded by four guards that will look to help stretch defenses this year one of whom showed signs last season as a freshman is Jeffery Oxford (6-0, So.). Averaging 10 points, four rebounds, and three assists last season Oxford will look to develop into a bigger threat for Claremore. Joe Clifton (6-0, Jr.) returns and should take on a larger production role for coach Nolan’s squad. As a freshman Vaughn burst onto the scene in a big way by averaging 14 points, seven rebounds and 3.7 blocks per game. Madie Vaughn (5-11, Sr.) will also be a crucial figure in the Collinsville attack after averaging 6.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game last year. Taylor O’Dell (5-7, Sr.) is the Lady Cardinals leader on the perimeter after averaging 13 points and three assists per game a year ago. Also starting at guard this year will be Sawyer Salisbury (5-10, Sr.) and Dakota Jefferson (5-7, Sr.). The driving force behind the Collinsville offense will be guard Austin Archer (6-0, Sr.) who is a shooter with range for days. Last season Archer used that shooting ability to average 12 points per game while also getting on the glass to average three rebounds per game. Fellow guards Seth Boomer (6-2, So.) and Shawn Kocheski (6-0, Sr.) also have a knack for scoring the basketball. Last season Boomer averaged eight points per game while Kocheski averaged five points per contest. In the frontcourt the Cardinals have two true glass eaters that will dominate the boards. Outlook: After boosting his win total in his second year, Ron Ward looks for more improvement in his third year. He will have to rely heavily on his two returning guards, senior Madison Whiteley and junior Kaycee Kelley, to be the leaders for his team. Outside of Whiteley and Kelley, Ward’s starting lineup includes three upperclassmen: senior Leslee Lee, junior Rachel McClanahan and junior Madison Bingham. Without a clear impact player, Ward’s team will have to get it done by committee. Ward hopes

that his team can be much more competitive this year. “We should compete at a higher level this year,” third-year head coach Ron Ward said. “ShaRae Frazier should give us that extra boost off of the bench.” Madison Whiteley 5-7 G Sr. Leslee Lee 6-0 G Sr. Kaycee Kelley 6-0 P Jr. Rachel McClanahan 5-4 G Jr. Madison Bingham 5-5 G Jr. BOYS Scott Norris 13-14 Record: 14-12

Outlook: Scott Norris enters his 10th season as the head coach of Coweta looking to get back to the top of the 5A class rankings. After recording 21 wins in 2012-13, the 2013-14 season came as a bit of a disappointment. The Tigers, however, did not have Top 100 and impact player Caleb Norris for much of the season, due to a foot injury. This season should be a different story. Norris returns six guys that have been in the starting lineup before. Norris, who has been selected to the all-conference first team twice, leads a stout group of upperclassmen. In the frontcourt, junior Jake Ross and senior Cagney Roberson should be a force to be reckoned with. Junior KeLandus Culton and senior Tanner Kennon join Norris in the backcourt. Junior Hunter Burchett will also be featured in the starting lineup. “Our focus is getting a little better every day,” Scott Norris said. “We have a lot of experience back and some really good young players that give us great depth.” Caleb Norris 6-3 G Sr. Jake Ross 6-7 P Jr. Cagney Roberson 6-3 F Sr. KeLandus Culton 6-1 G Jr. Tanner Kennon 6-2 G Sr. Hunter Burchett 5-8 Jr. Braden Norris 5-11 Fr. the Lady Cardinals have been a mainstay at the top of Class 5A basketball. Coach Mack continues to put a solid product on the floor year after year and 2014-15 is no different. Guard Lauren Billie (5-7, Sr.) brings 13 points, 4.0 steals and 3.0 rebounds to the floor. She also brings leadership in her play. Delaysha McCall (5-5, Sr.) is a steady guard with good defense and the ability to push the action. Sharayla Brown (6-3, Sr.) is back for her senior campaign and could become the Lady Cardinals double-double player. Marcia Reed (6-1, Sr.) was money last season averaging 14 points and 9.0 rebounds. The five seniors are on a mission and with support from Alexus Payton (G) and Ashlin Mead (F), this could be the season the Lady Cardinals get it done. Outlook: Jeffery Pittman (64, Sr.) returns to the court for the Cardinals after having an outstanding season as a junior. Pittman averaged 15 points and 7.0 rebounds per contest. Pittman is a unique player that can take you off the dribble, post up or hit three-pointers. Burke Putnam (6-1, So.) will start at guard bringing his 10 points, 3.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists to the floor. Tyree Malone (5-6, So.) is a defensive stud that can press and play in your face defense. John Johnson (6-4, Sr.) will play forward for head coach Lynwood Wade. Johnson accounted for 6.0 points and 5.0 rebounds a game last year. “We will play hard, play smart and not beat ourselves,” said Wade. Look for Jalen Cotton to be the 6th man coming off the bench this season. Overall the team has the talent to improve on that .500 season they had last year. William Childs and Drew Hill have joined the team as assistant coaches. Expect a solid effort from the Cardinals in 2014-15.

Outlook: After finishing with 16 wins a year ago the Lady Eagles will return a veteran group of players that will force opponents to stay razor sharp for 32 minutes. Head coach Jonita Ford Criddle said that her team’s mental toughness and basketball IQ may in fact be their biggest strength. “We are very experienced and should make fewer mental errors. We should compete very well,” Ford Criddle said. Helping the Lady Eagles soar to new heights will be lightning-quick Shala Dobbins (5-3, Sr.) and the dead-eye shooter of Mariah Green (5-5, Sr.). GIRLS Rabu Leyva 13-14 Record: 17-10

Outlook: Fifth-year head coach Rabu Leyva understand this is the deepest team as head coach and after claiming a regional championship last year the expectations are increased this year. The high expectations will hang upon the play of Amiri Durant (5-2, Sr.) at the point guard spot. Coach Leyva believes that Durant possesses the best ball handles of anyone in the state, boy or girl. Last season as a junior, Durant averaged 14.8 points, 1.5 assists, and 1.2 steals per game and the three year starter can use her quick step to get to the rim or find her shot from long distance. Durant isn’t afraid to find her teammates and has improved that aspect of her game during the offseason. At the opposite end of those passes will be Shantay Sells (5-10, Sr.) who is very physical in the paint and has great footwork on the block. Last year Sells averaged 5.6 points and 5.6 rebounds per game while Kayci Reed (5-7, Sr.) is an athletic defender that can connect from long distance on the wing. The backcourt will feature Tamia Harding (5-6, Jr.) and Maya Johnson (5-5, Jr.) both of whom will take pressure off of Durant who will spearhead the success of the Chargers in 2015. AJ Cockrell to be one of the best players in the state when the season comes to a close. Taylor Ellison (5-11, Sr.) and Alec V. Staab (6-3, Sr.) will be counted upon as well especially early in the season as the team comes together. “AJ, Alec, and Taylor all have big game experience and were key contributors on last year’s state championship squad,” Allison said of his three senior leaders. “All three are excellent leaders on and off the court.” Ellison shot 47 percent from 3-point range last year while Staab started 10 games for the Chargers as a junior. Both will be pressed into even bigger roles this season as seniors and are expected to have their averages in points, rebounds and assists increase. “Lots of new faces this year as we graduated arguably the most deep and talented senior class in Tulsa Memorial basketball history,” coach Allison said of this year’s squad. “Talented underclassmen must show maturity and mental toughness in order to get back to the state tournament.” Derek Guest (6-3, Jr.) at point guard was a letterwinner last season but will get the call as the triggerman this year while Kobe Rose (6-2, So.) will man the other guard spot after seeing quality playing time as a freshman. The depth of Memorial this season explains the success the Chargers have had due to the ability to reload. Leading the way will be junior guard Mikayla Schulanberger who averaged four steals per game last year. Cantrell spoke about Schulanberger’s role, “she is essential to our team, as her defense leads to our offense.” Schulanberger has shown she can light up the scoreboard after averaging 16 points last season to go with four rebounds per game. Charity Burdette (5-10, Jr.) is a well-rounded player for Skiatook averaging 6 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals last season. The output of Schulanberger and Burdette could define the season for the Bulldogs this year. Freshman Brittan King, sophomore Annariah Kosterlistzky and fellow sophomore Olivia Kesler will be expected to step up despite their limited minutes. Daniels’ inexperienced squad will be tested early when they play the defending champion Fort Gibson Lady Tigers on Dec. 5. “We are a young team but we have good talent,” Daniels said. “Once they gain experience they will be tough. Now, having those injured players back only helps to deepen our roster,” head coach Eli K. Brown III said. “Having an injury free season will be key to our success. If we stay healthy, we believe we can compete for a state championship.” Combo guard Elijah Landrum (6-0, So.) is a VYPE Top 100 selection and will be the team’s unquestioned leader on offense this season. As a freshman last year Landrum averaged 19.1 points and 3.2 steals per game and should only see those numbers go up this year. Also on the perimeter fans can expect the Braves to get good production from shooting guard Camron Williams (6-4, Sr.) and Mike Harris (5-9, Jr.). Last season Williams averaged 11.2 points while Harris chipped in an average of 3.2 points and 1.5 assists per game. In the frontcourt Chaz Glover (6-4, Sr.) is an athletic small forward who can do multiple things on the floor. Ciara Asberry (5-4, Sr.) brings a keen knowledge of her position to the floor. Asberry is what many coaches call a triple threat player. Last year she was a 48% three-point shooter. Joining Asberry in the backcourt is Jamee Asberry (5-6, Fr.). Despite her lack of varsity experience, J. Asberry has shown big play potential in practice. Jordan Ward (5-9, Jr.) scored 6.0 points and averaged over one block a game last year. Her defense is crucial if the Lady Warriors are going to control the blocks. “We are an athletic team with four returning starters, added offense with an incoming freshman, and a stronger defensive squad,” said coach Asberry. One player looking to make an impact on the defense is Greg Owens (6-8, Jr.). Owens will use his size to force opponents into bad shots. Controlling the boards will be important for the Warriors this season. Dairon Brown (6-1, Sr.) will start at forward, but has the ability to play like a guard. The combo player has excellent athleticism and vision. Freshman David Ward (6-4) has tremendous potential and could become the electric player to complement Cooks. Outlook: The Glenpool Warriors return four starters to a team that won a tournament for the first time in 15 years last season. 6-foot-4 senior Ross Smith headlines the starting lineup for head coach Doug Winters. Last season, Smith averaged 10 points, five rebounds and three steals per game, making himself the clear impact player for the team this season. Fellow senior Tyler Winters (6-3) returns to the starting lineup alongside Smith. Winters will be a force in the post, after averaging seven points and eight rebounds in 2013. Junior Torrey Harper (5-7) will man the point guard spot. His passing and effort on the defensive end will be vital for the Warriors. Harper averaged seven assists and three steals per game last season. Coach Winters will need junior Caleb Ranford’s (5-8) sharp shooting ability; he led the Warriors with 12 points per game last season. Rounding out the lineup is 6-foot-1 junior guard Blayne Buchanan. “We have good shooters, quickness and a deep bench,” head coach Winters said. “What we lack is size and substitutes for our post players.”

The size of the ‘Horns will be evident with the rebounding efforts of 6-6 senior center Donald Chasteen (2.3ppg/2.0reb) on the blocks while the quickness of junior guards Wesley Sheets (1.1ppg) and Cass Freeman (3.0reb/1.2asst) will be controlling tempo on the perimeter. Barkley also expects value contributions from the junior duo of 6-3 Matt Swope and 6-4 Trent Morris as well 5-10 senior guard Jordan Correa. “We’re returning a good nucleus from last year’s team including four players capable of impact performances any night,” said Barkley. “With the right combination of talent creating chemistry and experience, the Longhorns will surprise a lot of teams.” Garrett Glass 6-3 F Sr. Donald Chasteen 6-6 C Sr. Jordan Correa 5-10 G Sr. Eli Phillips 6-0 F Sr. Wesley Sheets 6-0 G Jr. Cass Freeman 6-0 G Jr. Matt Swope 6-3 F Jr.

Outlook: A squad that didn’t register a victory last season is now experienced and hungry for success in coach Bobby Nealy Jr.’s second season at the helm. “This is not the inexperience group from last year,” said the Lady Titans head coach. “They know what to expect, they are committed, determined, and hungry for success.” Success will come from the success of Ceyairrra Flemons (5-0, So.) who led the team in points and steals last year as a freshman. Flemons averaged 10 points per game last season and has worked hard over the summer to improve her all around game which has improved her confidence coming into her sophomore campaign. A trio of seniors LaJa Jefferson (5-6), Jenne Brown (5-8) and Atia Spears (5-8) will be counted upon for coach Nealy. Ariel SheltonBrown (5-7, Jr.) averaged four points per game last season at the guard spot. C’yanne Hunter (Fr.) has bought into her role and brings a lot of energy when she hits the hardwood. “We are excited about this year’s group. His ability to become an impact player in games will measure the success of the Titans. Trevion Jones (6-5, Sr.) will be a force on the block after pulling in nine rebounds per game a season ago. He added seven points and two steals per game and will look to add to those numbers as a senior. Two other seniors could play a role in the success as the feel important roles for the Titans in David Castine (5-6, Sr.) and Darrell McMahon (6-0, Sr.) at small forward. Castine averaged nine points but 6.5 steals last year at shooting guard. McMahon provides decent size but will need to become a bigger force on the boards. Tron Patterson (5-10, Jr.) will see an increased role this year and will look to capitalize with the added minutes. Brian Christian will provide quality minutes off the bench for coach Cordell Love. Outlook: The Conquerors were a favorite to compete for a gold ball last year but were knocked off in the first round of the Class 4A state tournament by Elk City. This year Victory Christian may be an even bigger favorite to bring home gold in March with five returning starters headlining the roster. The biggest star among that talented group of returners is VYPE Top 100 selection and ORU commit Chris Crawford (6-1, Sr.). Last season Crawford, who starts at the point guard spot, averaged 24 points and four assists per game and could possibly put up even better numbers this year. Fellow guard Keats Calhoon (6-2, Jr.) averaged 12 points and three assists last year and will get a lot of clean looks this season with Crawford drawing the bulk of every opponents attention. Perhaps if not for a midseason ACL injury, Rogers would have a pair of Top 100 choices after 5-8 shooting guard Mariah Walker was sidelined after totaling 20.2 points while dishing out 4.3 assists per outing. The consistent presence of 6-0 junior forward Eva Lewis, who averaged a double-double 17.2 points and 10.3 rebounds, earned her spot among the Top 100 selections for this year. Teriyon Thomas, a 5-5 junior, averaged 14.2 points in the rotation of players and rejoins 5-5 Delainia Ford (2.3ppg/2.2asst) and 5-9 junior forward Kennedy Payne (3.1ppg/3.0reb). Outlook: The Lady Demons finished last year with a 23-3 overall record but failed to make it to the state tournament after getting upset by Newkirk in the area tournament. This year Beggs brings back just two staters but that doesn’t mean they don’t return some serious production. A good portion of that production will come inside from forwards Cheyenne Gibbons (5-9, Sr.) and Aschton Couch (6-0, Jr.). Last season Couch posted an impressive average of 7.9 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.2 blocks a game while Gibbons averaged 8.1 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. Derrek Cole (6-3, Sr.) is the team’s lone returning starter at center where he averaged eight points and eight rebounds last year. Jackson McCormick (6-3, So.) will be another impact player in the frontcourt due to his ability to play with his back to the rim or step out and knock down jumpers. Outlook: The Trojans have never been to a state tournament but that is exactly what they have their sights set on this year after reaching the area finals last year but coming up just short. “We made the area final last year and missed the state tournament after back-to-back losses to Millwood and Pawnee. This year our goal is to get to the state tournament and have a chance to win it,” head coach Lense Ramey said. Leading the team this year will be guard Lense Ramey IV (Jr.) after the prolific scorer averaged 19.1 points per game as a sophomore. Point guard Tristan Edwards (Sr.) will also be a main focal point on the perimeter this year. Last season Edwards averaged 10.0 points and 5.5 assists per game. In the frontcourt Kyle Howard (Jr.) will be the team’s go to player. Howard has battled through injuries the past two years but still managed to average 13.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per game last season. This year coach Ramey said he expects the junior post player to improve those numbers and average around 15 points and 10 rebounds per game. Noah Jaguars GIRLS NO INFORMATION PROVIDED FROM THE SCHOOL BOYS Chris Wallace (4th year) 13-14 Record: 20-18

Outlook: The Jags return four starters from last season’s squad. Overall, Coach Wallace will have a total of six seniors who have been in the system for three to four years, so their maturity should play a key role in their success. They did lose their leading rebounder from last year, who was a huge presence both offensively and defensively. Collectively, the team will have to make it a priority to fill those gaps this season. Leading the way will be Brandon Askew (5-10, Sr.) at shooting guard. Wallace said “He can shoot the ball really well, has really good range and he continues to improve in other areas of his game.” He averaged 11 points a game, leading the team in scoring many games, especially toward the end of the season when he was averaging 15 ppg. Joining him in the backcourt will be James Bickers (6-0, Sr.). He is their floor general according to Wallace. “He makes sure things are running the way they are supposed to.” He averaged 10.5 points per game last season and dished out 5.4 assists. Wallace said that Askew and Bickers compliment each other so well and feed off each other. Filip Swanson (6-8, Sr.) will provide a presence in the middle, averaging seven points a game last season to go along with eight rebounds. Others to keep an eye on will be Josiah Showman, who started for the Jags in the second half of the season last year. Looking to play a significant role this year as well are Sammy Blount and Mason Beasler, after seeing limited minutes last year. A couple newcomers that will see playing time will be Peter Way (6-2, Sr.) and Matthew Dowd (5-11, So.) James Bickers 6-0 PG Sr. Brandon Askew 5-10 SG Sr. Peter Way 6-2 Sr. Matthew Dowd 5-11 So. RSU Men The 2014-15 edition of Rogers State men’s basketball features the return of six players, all with an opportunity to step in and fill vacant roles after the departure of seven players, as it enters its second season as a member of the NCAA Division II Heartland Conference.

RETURNERS

The most tenured player for Coach Barkley this season is J.C. Hartzler as he enters his third year on the Hill as the top returning scorer. The Tulsa, Oklahoma native started 45 games during his first two seasons, including playing a team-high 32.5 minutes per game a year ago while starting all but one contest, averaging 12.2 points per game.

“I think a lot of people are going to see a different guy in J.C. Hartzler this year. His freshman year, he started on and off, last year you saw bits and pieces, and we are hoping this year to tie it all together and see an all-league performer. He is another one that we are counting on from a leadership standpoint. Not only is he a good basketball player, he is just a great young man and leads our program in the classroom as well,” Barkley said.

RSU returns five other players that will continue to push for playing time after getting a taste of action last season, with the exception of Jordan Huffman after he took a redshirt in 2013-14. Deran Banton, Cory Ayala, Johnathon Buckley, and Jeylyn Sharpe each played their first season in RSU navy and red and according to Coach Barkley, “all four bring something to the table and each one of them does something really well and have specific traits that make our basketball club a little bit better.”

NEWCOMERS

Barkley and his assistant coaches hit the recruiting trail hard bringing in seven players for the 2014-15 season, which is arguably one of the most difficult in school history when looking at the strength of schedule.

Rogers State fans will get to know four players right away as they all come to the Hill with collegiate experience under their belts transferring from the NCAA Division I, II, and junior college ranks. “We brought two (NCAA) Division I transfers in DesJuan Newton and Donald Moore,” Barkley added. “We feel like both will be very good fits for our program, fit our returning guys, and basically the philosophy we want to play with this year. I’m excited in what they bring to the table from an athleticism stand point.”

Newton transferred to RSU for his senior campaign from Robert Morris where he made 12 appearances for the Colonials a season

ago. Moore will join Newton in the back court making the transition from Eastern Illinois after playing 12 games for the Panthers as a sophomore last year. The Hillcats also added size and strength down low welcoming a pair of six-foot, five-inch forwards to the fold in Frederico Santos and Carlos Perez. Both players enter their final year of eligibility looking to make an impact at RSU.

Jeylyn Sharpe

Coming to RSU with a mantle full of high school accolades is Matt Lea, the Oklahoma Class 4A Player of the Year last year for Stilwell High School. Another Oklahoma Basketball Coaches Association and Oklahoma Coaches Association 6A All-State selection will don the navy and red as Tanner Gregurich joins the Hillcats from Broken Arrow High School.

Schedule

Hillcats seek their eighth-consecutive winning season in 2015 and will do so with one of the program’s toughest schedules to date. After five years as an assistant with the Rogers State women’s basketball team, Bobby Cope takes the reins as the third head coach in team history bringing a familiarity of the program to his new position. His transition will be aided by welcoming seven players back to campus. Those seven players will have to replace nearly 70 percent of RSU’s scoring from a year ago after losing its top three scorers, including two Heartland Conference Honorable Mention AllConference selections in Katy Harsen and Clarissa Cannon. RETURNERS

The Hillcats will rely heavily upon Mikaila Newton, Jade Hardy, and Breanna Burford, their three seniors, to provide leadership both on and off the court as the program enters its second season in the Heartland Conference and NCAA Division II candidacy. Newton is back on the Hill as the top returning scorer after appearing in all 26 games as a junior in 2013-14, earning 23 starts. The only Hillcat to have spent all four years at RSU, Hardy brings that

experience to all aspects of the program providing leadership on and off the court. The senior has appeared in 59 games over a three-year span, including 25 a season ago averaging roughly 12 minutes per game. Burford is one of merely two players returning to the front court for RSU as the senior played 25 games in her first season on the Hill. Jackie Bueno will join Burford in the paint for her second season at RSU. Another key position on the floor will be covered by a veteran presence as point guard Kami Bunch returns for her junior campaign. Bunch set a single-game record last season with 14 assists against Newman and dished 125 on the year playing more than 28 minutes per game while adding 5.3 points and 4.3 rebounds a night.

Two more Hillcats enter the mix in the back court as sophomore Stacia Payne and redshirt freshman Heather Roberts return to the program looking to make an impact.

NEWCOMERS

As the Rogers State women’s basketball program starts a new chapter under a first-year head coach, it will do so with six fresh faces added to the mix. The Hillcats welcome a local name back to the area as former Daniel Webster High School standout Jordan Evans transfers to RSU for her junior season after playing 42 games over two seasons at UMKC.

Two more players come to the Hill with collegiate experience from the junior college ranks as Amari Jones and Jalissa Felici transfer in from Blinn College and Des Moines Area Community College, respectively.

Jones, another Tulsa, Oklahoma native, returns closer to home joining the Hillcats following two seasons with the Buccaneers where she helped the team to a quarterfinal appearance at the NJCAA National Championships.

A second-team all-region selection a season ago at DMACC, Felici started all 32 games for the Bears in 2013-14 scoring 11.2 points per game, including a season-best 23. Former Owasso High School standout Taylor Koelsch joins the Hillcats after spending one year at St. Gregory’s where she averaged double-figure scoring at 10.3 points per game.

RSU also adds two players jumping to the collegiate scene straight from high school as Madison Dearmin and Kelsy Byrd remain in the state of Oklahoma coming from Balko and Ketchum, respectively.

SCHEDULE

Coach Cope and the Hillcats face a demanding 26-game schedule squaring off against several regional rivals. RSU will play 14 of its contests in front of a home crowd at the Claremore Expo Center where it has a .663 winning percentage during its seven-year history. The eight non-conference games will give RSU a chance to get ready for the challenges of its second year in the Heartland Conference as a relative newcomer to the 10-team league.

Soccer

The 2014-15 Holland Hall boys’ soccer team is the youngest squad in a decade. With only two Seniors on the roster, Co-Captains Abraham Arredondo and Dylan Simmons, they will rely on a talented group of athletic underclassmen as they look forward to greater success in the Southwest Preparatory Conference. Of the ten returning letter winners from last year’s sqaud, Junior goalkeeper Sam Harrison will cover a majority of the time in the net after starting a majority of last year’s matches. Sam will anchor a strong defensive corps that includes Junior Michael Saliba, Sophomore Lane Norris, Freshman Nathan Washecheck and Captain Simmons. Younger brother, Jake Simmons, a Freshman, will also be seeing significant playing time this season.

The attack will be centered around Arredondo, who plays the role of a target forward. He will be supported by a number of skillful attackers whom, in early matches against local club teams, have shown a willingness to get forward. Junior Grayson Norris, who strikes a ball very well with either foot, will be dangerous around the goal, as will Junior Josh Chung and Sophomore Michael Burke. Holding down the midfield will be a pair of technically strong players – Junior Jaelon Woodard and Freshman Matthew Pearson. The Dutch soccer boys will have played eight “friendlies” before SPC play opens at home on Friday, January 16, vs. Arlington (TX) Oakridge, followed quickly the next day by a chance to upset last year’s conference champion, the Episcopal School of Dallas. For more information about this year’s team and scheduled matches, go to the Athletic page on the Holland Hall website. This season the girls soccer team looks strong once again. The Dutch return a lot of experience and leadership, including five seniors; Allene Michaels (F), Taryn Phillips (F and Captain), Katie Lopez (D and Captain), Maddie Turgeau (D and Captain) and Kendall Brock (D). In total, the Dutch will be returning nine starters from

last years squad. Keep an eye on underclassmen Juniors Jenna Byers (M), Tara Smith (M) and Bri Liu (D) who should make a major impact this season. A breakout player to watch is Addie Wallace (Freshman-M). Early on, the team has played four scrimmages and is 2-1-1.

This year look for the Dutch to be really competitive in the SPC. Last year's finish was the highest they have achieved in coach Pound’s seven seasons at the school, but it only left the team hungry for more. “The girls are not satisfied and they are looking to not only beat their record from last year, but to win the SPC for the first time in a long time for the Dutch,” said Pounds.

Outlook: According to coach Maddux, the Dutch will be a very young and inexperienced squad that should only get better as the year goes on.
