Bishop Kelley Grabs Gold Kelley won the closest set of the night.

The support for the Lady Comets was impressive. Students and parents filled the Catoosa gym giving the Lady Comets the feeling of home court advantage.

Coach Berna said the player really bought in this year and is excited to see what they can do in 2016. “They are excellent representatives of Bishop Kelley High School! Thanks to our volleyball parents and to our of our entire school community for their support!”

The last time the Lady Comets of Bishop Kelley hoisted a state championship volleyball trophy, Kelley was in Class 6A and several current players were barely in high school. It may not seem like 2012 was that long ago, but for head coach Jerri Berna the wait was long enough. Kelley is a volleyball powerhouse and despite the tough schedule and a fairly young squad, the Lady Comets put it all together when it counted the most.

“The state championship earned by this year’s team is the result of the team’s belief in the process we were teaching, working their hardest to make that happen and going after what they wanted. We played a tough schedule and overcame a lot to put ourselves in the position to play for a championship. As a result, I could not be more proud of our team or happier for them,” said Berna. ment as defending back-to-back champions, thanks in part to Kelley’s departure to Class 6A. But this clash of titans would finally be settled on the court with Kelley winning their 17th championship over No.9 Heritage Hall (25-16, 26-24, 25-20). The first set was business as usual for the Lady Comets winning easily, 25-16. It wasn’t until the second set when the Lady Chargers made a push and put Kelley against the wall. Heritage Hall worked to a 23-18 lead in the second set when Kelley’s Claire Raschen notched a kill igniting a 6-0 run. But the Lady Chargers would tie things up at 24, then Grace Wood and Reagen Roth added two kills and

Collinsville Softball In the third inning the Lady Tigers jumped out to a 1-0 lead after scoring on an unearned run. Collinsville was able to keep it within reach behind the pitching of Gail Young who pitched all 12 innings.

The Lady Cardinals put the wraps on a great season with a 2-1 victory in 12 innings over rival Pryor in the Class 5A state championship game at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City. The win avenged an earlier loss to the Lady Tigers and gave Collinsville their first title since 2005 and their third in school history.

Collinsville’s run to the title meant going through Duncan in the first round, which they won, 5-4 and defeating Deer Creek in the semifinals, 13-4. The Lady Cardinals finished the season with an overall record of 34-7. Head coach Mike Henry said the team was focused and ready to play.

Ashton Friend reached on a fielder’s choice then advanced on three passed balls to score and tie up the game. In the 12th inning Friend would make her presence felt again with a solo homerun to take a 2-1 lead. The winning shot was unforgettable for players and fans at the game. Before they left the field for the final time this season the Lady Cardinals each placed some championship dirt from the field at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium to take with them back to Collinsville. They left as Lady Cardinals, but returned as state champs.

8th and 9th place. The win marked the second straight title for the boys team.

Lincoln Christian Lincoln Christian Boys Run Away With Class 4A Title Lincoln Christian placed four runners in the top 10 in the Class 4A state meet, good enough to give them the overall state championship. Individually their best finisher was sophomore Luke Murphy who placed fourth. Zach Black of Sallisaw took top honors with Berryhill’s Daniel Mazzei in second. Murphy finished with a time of 16:06.34, while teammates Byrun Ratliff, Jordan Rittgers and Cabe Killingsworth crossed the finish line in 7th,

Lincoln was pursued by Byng High School who placed second, Metro Christian finished third with Santa Fe South and Weatherford rounding out the top five.

Metro Christian Girls Continue To Set Standard With a plethora of good teams in Class 4A, the race to a championship is never an easy one. For the Metro Christian girls it meant defeating the likes of Plainview, Weatherford, Lincoln Christian and Jay. Junior Lincoln Christian star Alyssa Solberg won the individual title

with a time of 11:28.31, while another Berryhill runner placed second in Adrena Mazzei just five seconds off the lead. But it was the consistent times from the Metro Christian girls that made the difference. The freshmen combo of Caroline McKee and Catherine Keeley finished eighth and ninth, while teammate Mallory Duncan rounded out the top ten. The trio scored low enough to help the team knock off Plainview who had won nine team titles in a row dating back to 2006 spanning three different classes.

DECEMBER 2015 Mazzio’s Corporation and VYPE have teamed up to grant a $2,000 Scholarship for one boy and one girl to be presented in the June issue of VYPE. Here is how it will work: • Each month, VYPE will take nominations for an Athlete of the Month and a boy and girl will be elected the Mazzio’s Athlete of the Month. This will be a chance for boys and girls of all sports to be recognized for their performances. • Nominees can be mailed to scholarship. Oklahoma@VYPE.com. Give the nominee’s name, school, sport and reasons you believe the athlete should be awarded the scholarship. • The nominees will need to be seniors this season but keep in mind that their accomplishments as juniors will be taken into consideration as well. • Each monthly recipient will be a candidate for the scholarship that will be awarded in June. • All sports will be eligible to have a nomination. • The male and female athletes who are chosen each month will have a pictured bio, highlighting their accomplishments, placed on this page.

Ellen Thomas Collinsville High School Senior cross country runner Ellen Thomas is a student at Collinsville High School and recently competed in the state meet at Edmond Santa Fe High School. Thomas and her Lady Cardinal teammates attended the state competition with the hopes of grabbing a top ten finish, and they did just that taking seventh place overall. Thomas raced to a fourth place finish with a time of 20:17.7, just three seconds shy of third place. Thomas said of the run, “It was exciting! I love the course in Edmond. My time was one of the better times this season.” Thomas has big plans after high school. Her goal is to continue running cross country, but has yet to decide on a college. “After high school I plan on running in college. I’m still deciding on where though,” said Thomas. For her commitment to her sport of cross country and her drive to become the best student-athlete she can be, Ellen Thomas is the Mazzios Athlete of the Month.

Abe Anderson Metro Christian Senior Abe Anderson is the starting quarterback for the Metro Christian Patriots and has led the team to an outstanding season. Through the regular season Anderson has thrown for more than 1,900 yards and over 20 touchdowns. That output has helped the Patriots make the playoffs and given them a shot at competing for a state championship. Head coach Jared McCoy has watched Anderson develop and become one of the top football players in the state. “Abe Anderson is a great football player. Opposing teams must account for him on both sides of the ball each week to prevent him from dominating a game. I’m thankful for the opportunity to coach him and not against him,” said coach McCoy. Anderson was selected to the VYPE Top 100, an honor given to Oklahoma’s top prep football players. For his commitment to the Metro Christian Patriots football program and to his teammates, Abe Anderson is the Mazzios Athlete of the Month.

DECEMBER 2015

Every school has them and most of the time they go unnoticed until someone turns an ankle or dislocates a finger. Yes, we’re talking about the athletic training student aides. We caught up with Tatum Chambers, Kelsi McMahan, Kaliyah Longoria, Hannah West, Pearl Frazier and Madison Garbee to find out what it means to be an important part of Bixby Spartan athletics. VYPE: What got you involved in Sports Medicine at Bixby? Tatum: After watching my mom work in the medical field for many years, I figured that’s where I was meant to be as well. I currently attend Tulsa Tech for Nursing so I love helping others and I found out that’s Athletic Training was the perfect connection for both helping others and being involved in the medical field. Kaliyah: I did it at my former high school in Dallas (Euless Trinity) and I really wanted to continue it once I moved to Bixby. Hannah: I have always wanted to do it and I just decided to try something new my senior year.

Pearl: On game day, I usually follow our Coach and do any tasks that she or the dancers need me to do. Kelsi: Very busy. It is very stressful with all the responsibilities and things that can go wrong but it is a lot of fun! VYPE: What’s the most difficult thing you do during a game? Tatum: Having to keep our heads on a swivel for the chain gangs carrying the first down markers. Kaliyah: I don’t think anything is too difficult because hard has a negative connotation to it. Hannah: The most difficult thing is trying to watch the game while fulfilling your duties, whether it is wound care or hydration. Always have to be alert and expect the unexpected. Madison: Having to keep up with the boys that are 6’4” when I am only 5’4”. I try not to get trampled.

Madison: I wanted to do something fun and different my last year of high school. Sports Medicine looked like the perfect choice!

Pearl: The most difficult thing I do during a game is to make sure everyone is in their right place at the right time. Especially on competition day, I have to help them with whatever they need injury wise so that they are at their best.

Pearl: I got involved because I wanted to be the manager for the dance team. I wanted to be able to help one of the dancers in case anyone ever needed anything.

Kelsi: I think the most difficult part is seeing an injured athlete realize the severity of their injury if it is significant. It is very sad!

Kelsi: My friend and fellow Senior, Tatum, convinced me to join with her. VYPE: What’s the hardest part of the body to tape? Tatum: Honestly, everything has its pros and cons to tape. Whether you are trying to watch out for a bone on the ankle to not tape too tight or have all the pressure of helping on game days. Definitely not the easiest skill to master Kaliyah: The knee. There are so many different tape jobs, types of tape (stretchy and adhesive) and ways to manipulate the knee joint while taping. Hannah: A shoulder is the hardest thing to tape on. Madison: Ankles. Pearl: The wrist. Kelsi: Ankles. VYPE: Most people think you’re just running water out to the players, but the truth is you’re doing something before, during and after the game. How busy are you on game day? Tatum: Haha, the boys and coaches love to jokingly call us water girls (which they all know we are not). Funny thing is, we get to the stadium before the boys, help unload all of their equipment on away games, set up taping stations, and are on constant look out for concussion symptoms and open wounds. We like to tell the boys to come walk a mile in our shoes if they just think we are water girls. Kaliyah: Personally, I never sit down from 4pm until after the game ends around 10:30pm plus we have clean up post game. Hannah: Game days are extremely busy! We are always there before the players get there and cleaning up after they leave. Madison: Game days are the most stressful, but also the most fun! You are always constantly doing something.

Q&A

Taping Sparta

VYPE: Funniest thing you’ve seen or heard at a game? Tatum: “Is that fruit on the field?” Kaliyah: Boys constantly complaining about tape sticking to their hair Hannah: After a game in Springdale, AR I was cutting a boy’s spat off of his cleat and I accidentally cut his shoelace off. Madison: The boys doing their “handshake.” Pearl: The funniest thing I have seen is when the elementary aged dancers at the mini clinic were cheering louder than the student section. VYPE: What would you say to another student that’s considering Sports Medicine in high school? Tatum: It is a GREAT way to meet new friends in high school as well as getting involved. Who knows? You may enjoy it as much as I have! Kaliyah: Make sure that you want to do it. It is a great way to make friends and you will learn a lot. Hannah: It is a very good program and it is a very good idea if you want to become an athletic trainer or a physical therapist. Madison: Join immediately! It is so much fun but also to stay committed! It is a great way to become a leader because so many people depend on you every single day! Pearl: I would say to definitely join Sports Medicine. It is a lot of fun and you learn a lot of skills that will always be helpful in medical situations! Kelsi: It is a lot of fun! It is a good way in get involved in your schools’ athletic teams and helps you meet people who could potentially become one of your best lifelong friends!

Michaela Stabler - Broken Arrow High School

Michaela Stabler is a varsity swimmer at Broken Arrow High School and is entering her senior year. As a member of the swim team Stabler competes in the 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle stating she likes to swim the distance events. As a student-athlete at Broken Arrow Stabler carries an unweighted GPA of 3.96, but she takes several AP courses giving her a weighted GPA of 5.0.

“This year I’m in four AP classes: English Lit and Comp, Calculus BC, Psychology, and Biology. My favorite class is my AP Psychology class. I like the material; I’ve always been interested in psychology and intend to be a psychiatrist,” said Stabler. Besides the swim team Stabler is involved with the National Honor Society and the Key Club. “Broken Arrow has helped me to become more well-rounded. I transferred here from a small private school in middle school. Had I stayed there, I certainly would have focused on my academics, but I likely would not have been a part of a team or as involved in volunteer work,” said Stabler. Stabler has been a member of the swim team all four years of high school. “I’ve been swimming on a team for eight years, but the past four have been the most important to me. I’m so grateful to have been picked as captain, because this team has

come to mean so much to me over the years.” After graduation she plans to attend college and continue both her education and athletics. “I’m not sure where. My top choice is Vanderbilt, but I’m also looking at TU and OU for the scholarships I can get as a national merit scholar. I want to eventually get my PhD.” Stabler is proud to call Broken Arrow High School her home. “Big schools, like Broken Arrow, seem like they should be difficult settings to stand out in. But Broken Arrow, especially this year, does a great job of recognizing the hard work of its students. Different clubs and teams get constant acknowledgement from staff and students alike. This year, after being named a national merit semifinalist, I heard my name on the morning announcements every day for a week or two. It felt really good to be recognized, and I know that other students feel the same way when they get acknowledged like that.”

THE “DRIVEN” ATHLETES OF THE MONTH Broken Arrow Cheer - Large Co-Ed State Champs The 2015 state cheer competition was moved back to Gallagher-Iba Arena this year, a place the Broken Arrow varsity cheer squad could call their second home.

Head coach Amy Howe was confident in the squads ability to stick the routine and give Broken Arrow their fourth Large Co-Ed state championship in a row. “I was pretty confident in the teams ability going into state week. Coming off of the regional win, we were only ahead by a few points. But had a great performance and fixed what we needed to fix early the next week. We even ended practices early late in the week of state because we had good run throughs of our routines and they were prepared. I’ve never done that before,” said Howe. Coach Howe admits there is a big difference between watching it in practice and seeing the team on the mat. “Watching them compete as a coach can be nerve racking because you have a feeling of helplessness. You do your job as a coach to prepare

them, but once they hit the floor, it’s in their hands. Once you see them hit each element of the routine, you get more confident. The last difficult element of the routine was the pyramid, so once they hit that I knew they hit a winning routine.” Large Co-Ed was started in 2007 with Bixby winning the first year and Choctaw winning the next four in a row. Broken Arrow has now tied Choctaw for the most Large Co-Ed titles. “Accomplishing a “4-PEAT” is what I am most proud of this year. It seems like every year, it’s more and more pressure to keep winning. The level of talent and their drive to succeed as a team carried them to this win. They never gave up and never let the pressure get to them. We are a family and came together as one to get the win,” said Howe. Broken Arrow Large Co-Ed Champions Lauren Ritchey, Kirstyn Craig, Mckenzie Bedford, McKenna Harris, Sam Pittman, Rachel Kik, Autumn Thomas, Eric Cisneros, Meghan Grunhof, Jesse McDaris, Megan Loring, Ashlei Pratt, Katelyn Mathis (Manager), Destinee’ Curry, Maya West, Lexi Sherwood, Raegan Isham, Madision Dilldine, Ashlynd Vaughn, Kiersten Snodgrass, Paige Gilmore, Piper Pittman, Allie Zimmerman, Morgan Moore (Manager), Jami Wheeler, Avery Fry, Emily Dudding, Reina McKee, Hannah Pumphrey, Maddie Fardlow, Mackenzie Schwers, Shelby Ford, Kidannys Rivera, Rebecca Caywood, Amy Howe (Head Coach), Alicia Palmer and Tori Turner (Asst. RSU MEN The 2014-15 edition of Rogers State The Rogers State men’s basketball team turns to a core group of returners as they continue to contend in the NCAA Division II Heartland Conference, entering year three in the league.

“We are very excited about this group, this team, and this year,” sixth-year Head Coach Justin Barkley said. “I think the guys are going to continue to buy in about who we are. This is a team our community, University, and athletic department can be proud of, and hopefully when the ball is thrown up, we have a group that will compete at a high level.”

The Hillcats return eight players from a 20-win team a season ago, finishing second in the standings going 14-6 in conference play. Leading the charge are a pair of senior guards in J.C. Hartzler (Tulsa, Okla.) and Donald Moore (Chicago Heights, Ill.), who averaged 14.3 and 9.9 points per game in 2014-15. “J.C. has lived up to everything we hoped he would be as a former Tulsa World Player of the Year, and is a few hundred points from being the school’s all-time leading scorer. We can’t put a price on what he’s meant for us, and I expect big things from him,” Barkley mentioned.

RSU will rely on its depth from players returning to a familiar system. Guards Corey Ayala (Metropolis, Ill.) and Jordan Huffman (Broken Arrow, Okla.) join forwards Jeylyn Sharpe (Ketchum, Okla.), Matt Lea (Stilwell, Okla.), and Johnathon Buckley (Kellyville, Okla.).

The addition of three, highly-touted transfers and a former Oklahoma Class 4A State Player of the Year bolster the lineup adding size and an outside shooting presence. Travis Julien (Vacherie, La.) and Robert Johnson (Cleveland, Ohio) come to the Hill from Nicholls State and Northern Michigan for their final collegiate season. “Robert will be one of those guys that can use his body to defend well and rebound in the interior,” Barkley added. “Travis is a 6-8, long, and athletic player that runs the floor well. His ability to be active around the rim and push the ball in transition was something our team lacked a year ago.”

Junior Travis Hester (Crozet, Va.) joins the team as a three-point specialist from Saint Peter’s and Chase Littlejohn (Stilwell, Okla.) makes the jump to the college ranks after a decorated prep career at Stilwell High School history. “One thing that Travis does really well is stretch the defense and shoot the basketball,” Barkley said. “Chase is coming in and trying to adapt to the college game, but I think he is going to be a guy that our fans come to appreciate in the years to come.”

DECEMBER 2015

While still not postseason eligible, the Hillcats have quickly become one of the top teams in the league and face another demanding schedule. RSU starts

with three exhibition contests against NCAA Division I teams Oral Roberts, New Mexico, and Tulsa before early season tests with perennial powers Metropolitan State University of Denver (Nov. 13) and Western State (Nov. 14).

RSU WOMEN

The Rogers State women’s basketball team will have an entirely different look on the Hill in 2015-16 as it tries to climb the Heartland Conference standings, entering its third year as a member of the NCAA Division II league. “I am excited for my second year here as head coach and the team we’ve got,” Bobby Cope said. “It is a great group of girls and they have been working extremely hard in the preseason. They are coming together better than we’ve had a team come together in the preseason in the last couple years.” Kami Bunch (Tulsa, Okla.) is the only player returning to the Hillcats’ lineup with more than one year of experience at RSU. She begins her senior season as the starting point guard after starting all 26 games a season ago, averaging 8.3 points per game, while her 4.4 assists per contest ranked second in the conference.

“Kami has had two very successful seasons for us,” Cope added. “She is one of the best point guards in the conference when it comes to distributing the ball. We

Kami Bunch

have to rely on Kami a whole lot more as far as providing scoring.”

Heather Roberts (Colleyville, Texas) and Madison Dearmin (Balko, Okla.) are the only other two returners for the Hillcats after both got significant minutes as freshmen in 2014-15 making 23 and 21 appearances, respectively.

“Heather had a great offseason and is coming in in excellent shape and will have a great year for us. There are not many people that will out-work her,” Cope mentioned. “Madison is the type that will run through a wall and do everything that the staff or her teammates need done.”

The rest of the roster is filled with 10 newcomers vying for time on the floor as one senior, four juniors, and one sophomore transfer join four freshmen. While the main challenge has been to learn a new system, the players have accepted the task.

“The biggest thing right now is we have a lot of new players coming from different backgrounds and trying to get everyone used to how we do things at RSU,” Cope said. Emily Gamble (Omaha, Neb.), Rachel Block (Tulsa, Okla.), Courtney Smith (Okay, Okla.), and Natasha Kindred (San Antonio, Texas) all come to RSU with collegiate experience and will be looked upon to provide a bulk of the offensive production.

Two early signings from the Arkansas prep ranks, Carlye Bohannan (Springdale, Ark.) and Lauren Schuldt (Fayetteville, Ark.), join the program with fellow freshmen Lindsey Byfield (Inola, Okla.). The trio has a chance to jump right into the action and make their presence known for the Hillcats.

For the fourth-straight year, RSU kicks off its season with an exhibition contest Oct. 30 at NCAA Division I University of Tulsa before its season opener in Wichita Falls, Texas Nov. 13 at Midwestern State.

GREEN COUNTRY DEFENDERS The Defenders finished their season last year ranked 13th in the NCHBC (National Varsity Boy’s) rankings. This year should be even better with the addition of three- time NCHBC All-American LaRon Stokes (Sr.), Noah Banks (Sr.), and Javon Qualls (Sr.). The Green Country Defenders are blessed to have the three-time NCHBC All-American candidate, Tulsa World “Mr. Inside” Nominee and three-year starter for the NOAH Jaguars, Stokes join us this year. He averaged 11.7 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks as a junior. Stokes can dominate both ends of the floor and has the potential to be as good as any big man in the state. He was selected to the All-Tournament team at the Jenks/Union invitational and was Oklahoma All-State honorable mention in 2014-15. At 6-foot-6, Banks is one of the more versatile players the Green Country Defenders have had. He averaged 14.5 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.1 blocks per game last season, while shooting 65% from the field. Coming off the NCHBC Most Improved Player Award and Tulsa World’s All-Metro Honorable Mention last year as a junior, Peyton Francisco is a point guard in the truest sense. He is a vocal leader, encourager and has a team first attitude. His versatility will allow the team to do multiple things on both ends of the court this year Green Country Lady Defenders are a young squad coming off of last season’s historic finish ranked NCHBC No. 7. That marked their first time in the top 10 in homeschool basketball. The current season’s outlook is very bright for this young

team, which possesses depth with ability. Returning starter for the Lady Defenders is sophomore power forward Melanie Williams (5-10) who led her team last year with 10.6 ppg and was Tulsa World AllMetro Honorable Mention as well as NCHBC South Central All-Region as a freshman.

What You Need To Know LINCOLN CHRISTIAN LADY BULLDOGS Led by senior Shaelyn Ward (5-9) the Lady Bulldogs and head coach Melody Stewart welcome the start of the new season as they look to build off the success of last season. Ward comes in averaging 12.2 points and 5.0 rebounds per game and is one of the top track stars at Lincoln in the shot and discus. With offers from Tulsa, Nebraska, Texas Tech and Missouri, Vaughn is only focused on getting her team to the state tournament. Brittany Kickapoo (5-9, Jr.) and Madison O’Dell (5-8, So.) will play key roles in the teams overall success this season. The Rams have become accustom to winning and head coach Mark Vancuren is hopeful this young team can lean on that experience and make another successful run to the state tournament. Leading the way is senior guard Kinzer Lambert (6-4). Last season Lambert averaged 16 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game. Lambert’s production with DeShawn Lowe’s ability to score nearly eight points a game give the Rams two legit scoring threats. Lowe (6-1, Sr.) will start at guard then a trio of sophomores round out the starting lineup. Josh Proctor (6-2), Jake Thompson (6-2) and Courtre’ Alexander (6-3) will all play major roles on the team this year. “This group has been exposed to winning at a high level. Hopefully they’ll have a burning desire to continue our tradition of success here,” said Vancuren. WILL ROGERS LADY ROPERS

Senior power forward Eva Lewis (6-0) returns for her final campaign in high school after averaging 23 points and 11 rebounds a game last year. A Top 100 player, Lewis is joined in the backcourt by Teriyon Thomas (5-4, Sr.) at point guard and shooting guard Mariah Walker (5-8, Sr.). This trio brings some dangerous offense to the court. The Spartans are a dangerous opponent for the opposition this season. With the return of Parker Jennings (5-10, Sr.) the Spartans have a scoring threat on every possession. “We’re very excited for the start of the season, the team has a lot of experience returning seven seniors. The girls worked hard this summer and came together as a group,” said Acord. Senior point guard Jensen Prince (5-5) returns after averaging 7.3 points, 2.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals last year. Her production will give coach Acord the ability to free up guard Hannah Nealis (5-9, Sr.). Nealis is the teams leading scorer averaging 9.0 points and grabbing 2.0 rebounds a game. The combo can create problems for opponents

thanks to their ability to score from any spot on the floor. Rachel Norman (5-5, Sr.) is another quick guard with excellent skills handling the ball. Norman accounted for 5.1 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.0 assist last year. Dawson Ellis (5-8, Sr.) can play guard or forward, while averaging 4.8 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.0 assist. Center Madison Brinton (5-11, Sr.) is the teams leading rebounder averaging four a game. A pair of seniors in Alexis Bryan (55) and Tykiaha Lowe (5-5) shore up the guard position giving coach Acord two solid players off the bench. Leading the way is IUPUI commit and VYPE Top 100 player T.J. Washington (60, Sr.). Washington is one of the best off the dribble and needs to be the glue for the team this season. Washington’s offensive production will force teams to roll defenders his way leaving shooters like Cole Surrett (6-5, Jr.) open. Surrett has found his range and is becoming one of the leaders of this team. Isaac “Ike”

Gilton (6-8, Sr.) could be the X-factor for the Trojans this year. If he can excel at the forward spot the team has a chance to be dominant in the paint. Defensive beast Terrell Marshall (6-0, Sr.) has worked hard to develop his shot and coach Haesloop believes he has the potential to play at the next level. Reese Leitao (6-5, Jr.) takes the football pads off and returns to the court where his athleticism makes his a tough matchup at forward. Chargois averaged 15.1 points, 8.4 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game last year, while Rodriguez accounted for 8.0 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists. The tandem will create problems for less athletic teams with no presence in the paint. Guard Nile Felton (63, Sr.) is another shooter coach Garcia will lean on this season for production on both ends of the floor. Felton averaged 8.5 points and 2.0 rebounds per contest last year. Sophomore guard Mo Garcia (6-4) gives the Redskins another big body on the floor, but Garcia also bring a quick first step and solid defense. Garcia averaged 4.3 points per game as a freshman. Seniors will dominate the floor for the Lady Chieftains this season. The five starters all bring experience and skill to the court. Head coach Darlean Calip is confident in this team and their ability to get the job done. The theme for this season is “On a mission.” “We want to accomplish our mission. Outlook

The Chieftains return an excellent mix of experience with athleticism and youthful talent. Leading the way is forward Alex Ogunseye (6-5, Sr.). Last season he averaged 12 points and 8.0 rebounds a game and looks to be the go-to player for head coach Conley Phipps this season. Ogunseye will get some

help from guard Keenan Ballance (5-11). Ballance can play the point and lock down opponents on defense. Detrick Johnson (6-1, Sr.) returns at guard where he averaged 7.0 points and 2.0 assists last year. That combined with the 6.0 points and 3.0 assists from Ballance will give the Chieftain backcourt solid production on the offensive end of the floor. Senior guard Khaleel Marshall (6-1) has the potential for a breakout year. The same applies to guard Jaylon Vann (6-1, Jr.). Both players are exciting to watch and could make a significant impact. A trio of sophomores, Korey Williams (6-1), Lajuan Hughes (5-11) and Peter Chang (6-0), provide depth on the bench giving coach Phipps several options during the season. Freshman Julian Smith (6-0) has shown potential and has worked hard to make the varsity roster. Expect the Chieftains to run the floor and force teams with more size to play transition defense. Ogunseye, Johnson and Marshall must bring senior leadership to the floor and help younger more inexperienced players mature for this team to have a successful season. Some of the pieces are their for the Chieftains to have a successful season.

Sand Springs Lady Sandites Head Coach: Dustin Morrow 2014-15 Record: 12-12 Assistant Coaches: Jason Puryear, Katy Edmonson, Brittany Crow Outlook The outlook for the Lady Sandites is bright with the return of senior Cierra Scott (5-7) and Sydney Pennington (59, Jr.). Scott is an outstanding shooting guard averaging 6.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game, while Pennington scored 17.2 points and grabbed 3.9 rebounds from her small forward position. Pennington was named AllConference last year and named to the Class 6A All-VYPE Honorable Mention this season. Jessica Collins (5-8, Jr.) will give the Lady Sandites a solid defensive effort while contributing 3.0 points and 1.2 steals. Gloria Mutri (61, So.) will play the post giving coach Morrow a scoring threat in the paint. Mutri averaged 8.4 points and 6.5 rebounds last year.

Other players to look for include shooting guard Selena Hitchcock (5-6, So.), point guard Holly Kersgeiter (510, Fr.), small forward Destiny Johnson (5-9, Fr.), small forward Isabella Degalado (5-9, Fr.), combo guard Jacie Taber (5-8, Fr.) and power forward Bailey Boaz (5-9, Jr.). “We are young, but we will be talented. “We look to keep progressing. We have advanced to the area tournament in each of the last two seasons, which is a first for this program,” said Savage. Kyle Keener (6-6, Jr.) returns at forward where he averaged 9.0 points, 5.4 rebounds and 3.9 blocks last year. A dynamic sophomore, Colt Savage (6-4) is capable of big numbers in this offense. Last year Savage averaged 10.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.8 assists. Fellow guard Brooks Haddock (6-2, So.) pitched in 12.5 points and 3.7 rebounds of his own. Junior Mack Thompson (5-8) also managed to contribute 6.5 points last year. The foursome not only returns as starters this season, but all return next year as well. FIELD HOCKEY The Dutch Field Hockey program finished the season on a very high note and by playing their best hockey of the year. They closed our their regular season games by winning four of their final five contests to secure a spot in the Southwest Preparatory Conference Championships. The final game of the regular season came down to a winner take all for the final seed and the Dutch came out on top of Ft. Worth Country Day with a 4-0 win. The Dutch entered the tournament as the 6th seed in the North Zone and started the weekend off with a 3-2 win over St. Mary’s Hall of San Antonio. A quarterfinal matchup against Trinity Valley School saw the Dutch fall 2-1 to the Trojans. It was a physical and hard fought game and the Dutch battled until the final seconds with opportunities to score. A loss in that game put Holland Hall in the 5th place game against the Episcopal School of Dallas. With monsoon rain conditions, the Dutch were determined to end their final SPC run with a win. A game-tying goal by senior Paige Rudd sent the game into overtime where the Dutch dominated. A fast break out of the backfield sent the ball to senior Gracie White, who split two ESD defenders on a perfect pass to senior Tara Smith. Tara smith carried the ball hard on an angle into the shooting circle and scored on a hard hit to the opposite corner for a sudden victory! The 5th place finish was the highest finish for the Dutch field hockey program since 2007. Senior Merich Frizzell has signed a National Letter of Intent to play field hockey at Liberty University and senior Tara Smith has committed to play for Texas Christian University.

CROSS COUNTRY This season the boys cross-country team was led by senior Michael Saliba. Saliba was the team’s top runner at each meet he participated in this year, earning medals at almost every meet. He ran the fifth fastest 5k in school history, finished third at the SPC North Zone meet and was named to the All North Zone team. The Dutch also had a great performance from freshman Clinton Baird who was the teams solid number two guy all year and was their top finisher at the Broken Arrow meet when Saliba wasn’t running. Senior Kelly Keglovits led the girls this season, and like Saliba, had a break out year. She was All North Zone and had a third place finish at

the SPC North Zone meet. She also ran the fifth fastest 5k time in school history. Junior Casey Ferguson was a close second on the team and will be looking for be a team leader next season.

VOLLEYBALL

The Dutch volleyball team made it to the SPC tournament; meeting one of their goals they sat to begin the season. They started out strong in conference play this year defeating Trinity Valley School and Hockaday and then proceeded to win two more versus Casady and Fort Worth Country Day to get a fifth place seed in the tournament. Four players in particular who have stood out this year for the team and were leaders on the court. Audrey Warren and Molly Lohrey, both seniors, have been a strong and consistent presence on the court. Warren attacked very well from the middle and has been tough on the opponents defense. Lohrey has been a strong left side and her serving, passing and hitting have improved so much these last three months. Setter Krystal Wang, a junior, has played smart and aggressive volleyball. “Her setting has become much more consistent for our hitters and she has also contributed as an attacker both front and back row for us”’ said coach Inna Felkins. Lastly, libero Victoria Terry, a junior, has played awesome defense and been a consistent passer in serve receive for the team. Her quality passing has given the front row the opportunities to be aggressive at the net.

Sydney Stout Bixby High School How long have you been involved with FCA? I have been involved in FCA for two years now. Who influenced you? I decided to join FCA myself because I felt that it was a good way to share my faith at school and fellowship with people at my school. How has FCA made an impact in your life on and off the field? I feel like I have people that will stand behind me whether it is on or off the court. These people can help me stay strong in my faith and be an example to others. How have your beliefs helped you as an athlete? As an athlete, I lean heavily on my faith. I feel that in order to be the best that you can be, you have to be committed to God’s plan for you. God wants everyone to be the best that they can be, so I play for His glory. My faith has helped me through my time as an athlete in many ways, but the most prevalent would be my recent injury. Throughout the past four months I have struggled with not being able to play the sport I love. I had surgery to repair my ACL and meniscus in July and am patiently waiting for the day I am released to play again. I realized that I have to pour my thoughts and worries into God in order to get through my trials and hard times. He has a plan for me and I will fulfill it one way or another. What is your favoriate Bible verse and why? Jeremiah‬ 29:11‬ NIV “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” This is my favorite verse because it reassures me that God has a purpose for my life and that I have a pathway to success.
