VYPE’s own Kyle Kendrick sat down with Broken Arrow wrestling coach Shawn Jones to discuss the outlook on the season and who has impressed the Tiger nation early on in the season. Coach Jones opens up and the new facility and the future of the program.
Started in 2006, the Elite 8 has become one of the more anticipated releases for VYPE Magazine every year. The team selected for the 2013-14 season is loaded with outstanding players on and off the court. From Broken Arrow’s talented twosome to the shooting skills of Owasso’s Shake Milton, this group is sure to impress.
Here We Go!!! Cold temperatures outside turn our thoughts to action inside as basketball, swimming and wrestling seasons kick into high gear with anticipation of state championships in late February and March.
Pick up your free monthly issue as we highlight the top players in the metro Tulsa region. Ride along with us as we follow the road to the state tournament in all three sports.
In this issue we recap the Tournament of Champions victory by Class 6A top-ranked Union, reveal our Elite Eight basketball team, announce our Mr. Football selection and take a close look at the Jenks, Broken Arrow and Owasso swim teams, in addition to the Broken Arrow and Owasso wrestling programs. It looks to be another exciting year for our winter sports contestants. Union is back in the top spot in boys basketball. Can the Redskins duplicate their 2011-12 season in which they went undefeated and won a state title? That’s just one of the interesting scenarios that await basketball, swimming and wrestling teams this winter.

How long have you been involved in FCA? Since 9th grade when it was first offered at a school I went to. Who influenced you to join? Alex Bradley and Drew Kaiser.
How has FCA made an impact in your life on the field and off the field? FCA has had a huge impact on my life because it helps strengthen my friendships with my teammates on and off of the field while attempting to reach out to other students who are unbelievers or uninvolved. How have your beliefs helped you as an athlete? My beliefs have impacted my athletic career immensely because I know that my talent is given to me by God and I try to give Him the glory He deserves during football games and track meets which helps keep me humble.
What is your favorite Bible verse and why? Phil. 4:13 because it teaches people to never give up on a dream or during times of adversity because ALL things ARE possible with Christ.

Edwards (132) and Braxton Owens (160) have all been major contributors the past three years outside of Conley who is a move in from Sapulpa where he was a twotime state champion. Juniors Pup Simmons, Paden Bailey and Davion Jefries are also key contributors for the Tigers.
Broken Arrow has a massive amount of wrestling tradition, eight state titles as a team, including three of the last four, and six titles at dual state. With numbers like, that it’s easy to see that competing for a state title is always the goal for the Tigers and head coach Sean Jones said this year is no different. “The upperclassmen have all been involved in at least one state title. The seniors have been around for two and the juniors have been there for one. The expectation is always to win a state title. That’s the only reason we do this,” Jones said. “This year’s team has really bought into that and is working hard to do what it takes to get there.” The Tigers got off to a late start this season due to the Winter weather but hit the ground running when things did get underway. In the team’s first outing the Tigers traveled to Cleveland, OH for the Ironman Invitational and placed ninth in a field of over 80 teams. Broken Arrow also won the Bixby Tournament this year led by a slew of returning stars. Seniors Tanner Bailey (145), Shea Conley (138), Zack

Breonna Barker Broken Arrow Lady Tigers swimmer Breonna Barker is the Tiger Female Athlete of the Month. Earlier this season Barker broke her own school record in the 500 Freestyle and has also placed highly at nearly every completion she has attended. Barker said one of her biggest highlights of the year came a few weeks after she broke the record, at the Elite Meet in Oklahoma City. A qualifying meet with many very talented swimmers in attendance, Barker set her personal best time in the 500 Freestyle at 5:05.72. The junior standout also said she has had several memorable achievements in the classroom this year, passing both AP Chemistry and AP Language. Barker added that all of those accomplishments came due to a trust in a higher power.
“Never doubt yourself, because with God, all things are possible.”

The athletic senior’s big game against the Trojans capped a five-game stretch in which he averaged 20 points a game.

Broken Arrow Girls Basketball Mike Hughes knows there will no surprising anyone this year. His Lady Tigers are off to a 10-0 start and ranked No. 2 according to ossaarankings.com. Senior VYPE 100 standouts Toree Thompson and Amari Dennis might be the focal point for opponents, but Hughes knows the Lady Tigers are the epitome of team. “We’re past the point of surprising people,” Hughes said. “We’re off to a good season so far. We’re a very unselfish team, possibly a little too unselfish. I want them to take the open shot and sometimes they do

New head coach Beau Wallace enters his first season with several key players returning including Holliday. His early season production has helped Broken Arrow to a top 10 ranking in Class 6A. “The guys I have played with these past games are amazing. They look to get me the ball as I look to do the same. All of those wins have been huge for us and we look to keep doing the same,” Josh Holliday said. Recently Holliday scored 16 points against East Central and 15 in the win against Del City. First-year head coach Whitney Lynn faces a rebuilding year as she attempts to get the Broken Arrow swim teams back on track. The former Union swimmer knows a little something about success. Lynn was an Olympic Trial qualifier in the 1,000-meter Freestyle for the 2000 games. A strong distance swimmer at Union and the University of Arkansas, she recorded 15 first-place finishes her junior year in college. She inherits programs that finished ninth (girls) and 11th (boys) at state last year. BOYS
Three seniors return to anchor a team that is ranked 11th in state. James Pfeiffer, an all-around competitor, is a jack-of-all-trades in the pool. Lynn will look to insert the senior captain wherever she needs a swimmer. “This is his fourth year of swimming, he’s a well-rounded swimmer,” she said.
Classmates Jake Guy and Nathan Tyler bring specialties to their events. Guy is strong in the IM while Tyler will compete in the 100 Breaststroke. Tyler was a state qualifier in the 100 Free last year. Sophomores Nathan Dunn and Steven Tucker are working hard in the pool to hone their skills.
“This is a transition year,” Lynn said. “We’re looking for good times in regionals. Qualifying for state is different this year. If you place first through eighth or you have the top times, you advance to state. In the past, there was a time set and whoever beat that time qualified. This year, in theory you could have 16 swimmers from one region

The Lady Tigers are led by dual state champion Breonna Barker. She won gold in the 50 Free (23.64) and the 100 Free (50.90) in 2013. Look for Barker also to anchor the medley events for ninth-ranked Broken Arrow. “She will be in the top eight in whatever events I put her in,” Lynn said.
Jacqueline Boggs is the lone senior on the squad. She has taken on the captain’s role and is providing solid leadership, Lynn noted. In the pool, Boggs will swim the 200 and 500 Free events. Newcomers to swimming include sophomores Samantha Boggs, younger sister of Jacqueline, and
Taryn Little.
“We expect both to be very wellrounded swimmers,” Lynn said. “I’m excited for what they will do in the future.” Freshmen Brooke York, Kate Walker, Rachel Nelson and Bailey Hill were members of the BA Tiger Sharks club team and have shown tremendous progress, said Lynn.
“We’re gearing up for February,” Lynn said. “That’s the big month in swimming with regionals and state. We have a bunch of really great kids. I think they will do very well in the coming years.”

Amari Dennis Broken Arrow Tigers Guard/Forward • 5-11, SR. • @_MarsBars “It’s an honor to be selected to as part of the Elite 8. My mother is my biggest role model on and off the court. The strongest part of my game is how versatile I am and that I can play all five positions on the court. My goals after high school include becoming a Physicians Assistant and further my dreams in the medical field. The funniest thing I’ve seen while playing basketball at Broken Arrow was one of my teammates laughed and spit her water out all over my coach during a game.”
Editor’s Note: When Amari says she versatile, that’s putting it lightly. She can guard smaller backcourt players or step inside and battle in the paint. One of the best players in the state at adjusting to the competition and forcing teams outside their comfort zone.
Baileigh O'''"’Dell Verdigris Cardinals Point Guard • 5-6, SR. • @bodell_25 “This is a huge honor to be considered as one of the top players in the state. I am blessed. The strongest part of my game is attacking the basket and my ability to shoot the ball. Once at a game the crowd was calling me a gym rat (laughs). They thought this was an insult, but I took it as I live in the gym. I took it as a compliment. I try to play the game and live life for God. After high school I’m going to play college ball at Lamar University and succeed in life as well as basketball.”
Editor’s Note: Baileigh is fearless on the floor and is not shy about putting up tough shots that usually go in. Players like Baileigh force the action and create opportunities for teammates by being a threat at both ends of the court.

Sharayla Brown East Central Cardinals Center • 6-3, JR. “The Elite 8 is a great honor. I would have never thought I would’ve made it here. I need to keep going forward to make my mom proud. Besides my mom, Felecia Achilefu has been a great role model for me since I was a freshman. She’s a great person and player. She never quits. After high school I want
to go to college and get my degree and be the first person in my family that’s a girl to go to college. My game is centered around defense and I love to block shots. The funniest thing I’ve heard during a game was when my nephew was crying for me and was trying to run on the court so I could get him.
Editor’s Note: If it’s defense you like then you’ll love the play of this East Central junior. Brown may be the answer for coach Mack as he and the Lady Cards look to finally grab that gold ball.
Toree Thompson Broken Arrow Tigers Combo Guard • 5-9, SR. • @iWant_VicTOREE “Being a part of the Elite 8 is truly an honor. My game on the court is breaking the defense down and my ability to score in different ways. My goals after high school are to become an All-American in college at Ole Miss, play professional basketball and be the best person I can be. Kevin
Durant is one of my role models. He’s not only a great player but he’s also a class act. Once during a game my coach was mad at a ref, stomped his foot and said, “I don’t give a nick nack patty wack give a dog a bone!”
Chris Crawford Victory Conquerors Point Guard • 6-3, JR. • @HDMD_1 “It’s a great honor to know I am considered part of the Elite 8 of Oklahoma for basketball. My brother Robert Crawford has been my role model. He was also part of the Elite 8 in 2007-08. Getting into the lane is the strongest part 32

of my game. After high school I plan on going to college and then making it to the NBA. One time at Webster High School someone from their fan section asked me how much I get paid to play basketball after I got an And-1.”
Editor’s Note: Only a junior, Chris Crawford is rapidly becoming one of the top guards in the state. Like his brother Robert, Chris has the unique ability to make the difficult look easy.
Editor’s Note: There’s a reason Toree is headed to Ole Miss. She is a gifted shooter with range and accuracy. The combo guard can play with anyone on the floor and is never intimidated.

Shawn Olden Union Redskins Combo Guard • 6-4, SR. • @ShawnTH22 “The Elite 8 is a great honor. I’ve known about the Elite 8 since I reached high school and only eight get selected every year. I would have to say one of my biggest role models is my AAU coach Lloyd Hudson. I think the strongest part of my
game is driving to the basket. When I’m done with high school I would like to attend college and earn a degree. Once I heard someone yell, “take him out of the game.”
Editor’s Note: Shawn Olden came into his own last season. As a combo guard Olden can hurt your defense with his shooting and his ability to find the open man for an easy two.
Mitchell Solomon Bixby Spartans Power Forward • 6-9, SR. “It’s really special to be recognized with such well known basketball players from Oklahoma. My dad has been my role model on and off the court. Rebounding and getting back to the basket is the strongest part of my game. I’m also developing a nice shot. When I’m
done with high school I would like to play at the next level and complete an engineering degree. The funniest thing I’ve heard during a game was someone from the crowd said, “who wears socks like that?”
Editor’s Note: Mitchell Solomon has tremendous potential at the next level. A throwback rebounder that plays physical, Solomon is a beast inside and his out game is improving every day.
Shake Milton Owasso Rams Point Guard • 6-2, Jr. “It’s a blessing and an honor to be named to the Elite 8 team. It shows that hard work pays off. My older sister is my role model on and off the court. The strongest part of my game is scoring and facilitating. Getting my teammates involved. Once I’ve graduated high 34

is on the line. Players like Milton don’t come around too often, but when they do they leave their mark on the program.

Early in the year the Redskins went to the always competitive Perry Tournament of Champions and saw six wrestlers place in their respective weight classes. Wolfenbarger and Colby Wilson were the team’s highest finshers taking home third place honors at 132 and 160 respectively. Wilson also took second at the Geary Tournament in January. Berryhill A team with loads of tradition the Berryhill Chiefs are once again in the hunt for some major hardware in Class 3A. Despite being a talented group ranked No. 7 in 3A the Chiefs are also very young. Berryhill graduated five state qualifiers and four state placers last year and bring back just one state qualifier. That qualifier, Jonce Blaylock, is a returning state champion and has already made headlines this year winning the Bristow Tournament at 152 pounds. The Chiefs have wrestled a very tough schedule this year, with only one of their first seven dual opponents coming from Class 3A. Despite the tough road the Chiefs are 2-5 on the year in duals and still promise to be a team who makes some serious noise at the state tournament. Cascia Hall

Jonce Blaylock The Commandos are currently ranked No. 6 in Class 4A and as always a team to watch out for. Tanner Skidgel has already been a dominant force for Cascia Hall at 106 pounds taking second at the Edmond Tournament and first at the Cushing Tournament. Cody Lambert at 120 pounds has also been in great form early in the year taking second at both Edmond and Cushing while Scout Skidgel finished second at Edmond and third at Cushing at 126 pounds. With crucial duals against Mannford and Sallisaw coming up in late January the Commandos will definitely be battle-tested when the state tournament rolls around.
Glenpool The Warriors are currently ranked No. 5 in Class 4A and are 2-1 in duals early this season. Bringing back four state qualifiers the Warriors are experienced and hungry for gold this year. At the Miami Tournament earlier this season the Warriors had nine wrestlers place, earning them a third place team finish at the tournament. Bryce Folkerts led the team at Miami winning the 195-pound division. Garrett Wild, Colton Raper and Austin Gunter all placed second at the tournament at 106, 138 and 225 pounds respectively. At the Kansas City Stampede Christian Moody and Gary Wayne Harding both placed second at 113 and 138 pounds respectively. Spartans Riding Wave of Success
Bixby swim captains Ryan Knam and Alyssa Hicks lead a talented group of young men and women into what could be another historic season for the Spartans. down.
VYPE: Name someone on the team that has really impressed you this season.
Ryan Knam and Alyssa Hicks VYPE: Bixby is ranked No.1 in both boys and girls swimming. Is the team feeling the pressure being on top of Class 5A?
Knam: Of course we feel the pressure. The girls have a great opportunity given to them and the boys are going for a three-peat. If both boys and girls take home 1st, it will be the first time in Bixby swimming history. Hicks: The pressure is always there for both the girls and the boys, however, this year our coaches have really taught us to use this pressure as the force we need to push us past our limits. We have used this pressure to not only hit our best times but also break school record times this year. VYPE: Bixby swimming has really taken off. What’s the reason behind the quick starts?
Knam: Its been our mentality. Two years ago, we were a huge favorite at state and were expected to win, which we did. Last year, we were told that we were going to have to actually work for the title, so that's what we did. We trained hard all year, had a wonderful taper, and swam our hearts out to take home the title. This year, it's going to be another dogfight and

I'm looking forward to it.
Hicks: Our amazing coaching staff has been the main reason behind our success. They have taught us that we have to keep our mental strength just as strong as our physical. If we truly believe we can do our bests and are determined before a meet then we will have nothing to stop us from doing so. A positive attitude at both practices and meets can bring home the gold. VYPE: What is a typical practice session like for the Spartans?
Knam: Hard. Very hard. We are a team that has fun and works when we need to. We have fun on our off time but when we get into the pool, it's time to go to work. We do two-a-days 3 out of 5 days a week. We bust out three hours of swimming those days and two hours on the other two.
Hicks: Our typical practice session is around 3500 to 4500 meters. We usually start off with a 600m warmup and then continue on with a 4-500 m kick\drill set. Then comes our main set. This is when the intervals become fast and we are tested the most. It can be anywhere between 2500-3500m after this we finish with a 300m cool
Knam: Do I have to choose? Everyone on the team has done outstanding this year. However, if I had to choose two, I'd choose Brad Portway and Kyle Lambdin. Both just missed out on state last year and have fueled their drive this year with that disappointment. They've both dropped significant amounts of time this year and worked hard all year. I'm incredibly proud of them and excited to see what they do come February.
Hicks: This year's freshmen girls have impressed me the most. The girls team graduated some of our best swimmers last year, but these freshmen have really picked up the slack. With out these underclassmen girls we would not even have a chance of being at the top of our class. VYPE: What is your pre-swim meal before a competition? Knam: I eat a wrap from QT, a cliff bar, a few items of fruit, and have a couple of Gatorades.
Hicks: Our team holds a fish bowl (team dinner) the night before a big meet. We eat pastas and other carbs so we will wake up with energy for our races. The meal right before our meets is filling but not too heavy and high in protein and carbs. Staying hydrated is also very important, lots and lots of water. VYPE: What is the funniest thing you have witnessed at a swim meet?
Knam: Last year at Jenks, one of my friends slipped while on deck because he was running. Before he could get up, my best friend thought it was a good idea to try and hurdle him. In doing so, he kneed my friend in the back of the head and drove his head
into the tile. Despite the concussion received by one, and the bruised knee by the other, that was still the handsdown funniest thing I've seen at a swim meet.
Hicks: The funniest moment I have had at a meet was when I was walking and a kid from my team comes running past me, and we all know not to run in a pool, he very dramatically slips and falls. My coaches come from across the pool to see if he is okay, by this time the whole pool is staring at him. He gets up trying to play it cool and yelling "I'm golden pony boy," the whole Jenks pool started laughing and Bixby once again makes a scene in front of everyone. VYPE: What does it mean to you for your peers to vote you in as a captain? Knam: Being voted as captain means that my peers have stored their faith in me to take them to another state championship. Coming off as last year's captain and state champion, I am excited to motivate my team to hopefully another state title.
Hicks: It means a lot for me to be the team captain of the girls team. The team picked me, not the coaches, which makes it even more special. I
love all these girls like sisters and am honored to be their captain. VYPE: Expectations are high this season, how will the Spartans season end and how do you expect your season to finish?
Knam: I'm cautiously optimistic about that. I believe that we have what it takes to win, but I'm making sure that we don't assume that we'll take the title. We've got significant competition in the 5A class in schools like Altus, Harrah, Stillwater, and Fort. Gibson, and they are coming for us. I'm excited to see how we perform with the pressure compared to last year. Hicks: No one really know how it will end, of course I believe it will end with two more trophies to add to our case. We will for sure have another year full of improvement and memories. VYPE: What are you plans after high school?
Knam: I plan on going to Oklahoma State University and Triple Majoring in Business Management, Marketing, and Psychology. After that, I aspire to join and eventually lead a marketing team for my favorite entertainment
company.
Hicks: I am attending Tulsa Tech this year and plan to graduate high school with my cosmetology license. I then want to attend college at OSU and graduate with my business degree so I can open up my own salon someday. VYPE: What is your most memorable moment as a swimmer at Bixby? Knam: Well, my favorite is definitely shaving my legs. That is by far the greatest feeling in the world. But my most memorable, would have to be hitting my first state qualifying time sophomore year at Jenks in the 100 butterfly.
Hicks: My most memorable moment I have had in swimming would have to be hearing the Bixby boys team being announced as state champions over the intercom last year. I was so proud to be on this team and even though the girls came home with third. The boy’s winning was exciting for the whole team. They had worked so hard for that moment and it taught me that hard work really does pay off in the end.

Union, Norman North Capture TOC Titles Could this year’s Tournament of Champions title do for Union what the 2011 title did – spark another Class 6A title run? Only time will tell. But so far the Redskins are off to an undefeated start at 7-1 as of this issue’s publication. “There are a lot of similarities between the two teams,” Union head coach Rudy Garcia admitted. “That 2011-12 team had played together a long time just like this class. Hopefully this year’s team will have the same hunger that group did. “Our chemistry continues to get better. Early on in practices we knew we had a core group of guys in Shawn Olden, Alex Barton, Bain Wannemacher, Abel Rodriguez and freshman Ethan Chargois. Now we’re incorporating Jeff (Mead) and Carson (Meier) into it. That 2011-12 team was very unselfish. It didn’t matter who got the glory. This group

over Victory Christian and the 41-35 win over Bishop McGuinness in the championship finals. “McGuinness hit some big shots late in the game,” Garcia said. “It’s good to be in those type of situations and see how your kids responded. We responded well, we learned from it.” Victory Christian guard Chris Crawford, who led the Conquerors’ with 64 points in three games, was named tournament MVP. Arnett’s Tyler Tune, another VYPE 100 player, led the tournament in scoring and rebounding with 77 points and 40 rebounds. Scoreboard

Jenks Swimming Jenks Swimmers Gear Up For Regionals, State
GIRLS After finishing second at the Class 6A state swim meet last year, the Jenks Lady Trojans are currently ranked third, according to ossaarankings.com.
The Lady Trojans are led by returning state placer Camryn Hudgins, who finished sixth in the 200 free in 2013.
“Camryn swims everything,” Jenks coach John Turner said. “She may be one of our best chances of a swimmer in the finals.” Other state qualifiers returning include sophomores Megan Inbody (50 Free) and Tatum Vann (50 Free) and junior McKenzie Sawyer. All three qualified for the 50 Free. Inbody finished eighth overall. Junior breaststroker Abbey Wilkins is recovering from shoulder surgery but should have a chance to qualify for state.

“We’re a young team,” said Turner, who is in his 35th year as the Jenks swim coach. “Abbey is way ahead of last year. The short Free and Fly are Megan’s best events. Hannah Ledsord will VYPEOK.COM

swimmer and is competing in the 200 and 500 Free this season. Cole Reynolds is another senior who is competing in the Backstroke.

“Andrew is a great captain and good leader,” Turner said. “He is a state qualifier in the 200 Free. Our seniors are all program guys who know what it means to be a Jenks swimmer.”
The Trojans are coming off a seventh place finish a year ago and entered the New Year ranked fifth in Class 6A. Turner admits this is a rebuilding year after losing 75 percent of their scoring last season.
“We’ve won most of our dual meets but it’s hard to use that as a comparison because we can enter four in every event so we can beat teams on sheer numbers. The kids are all working hard.”
Senior Alex Campbell is the team’s top prospect at state in the 100 Backstroke and 200 Free events, Turner said. Classmate Roman DeAngelis is a returning state qualifier in the 100 Fly. He will also swim freestyle events. Andrew Moore, a senior captain, is the team’s distance
Sophomore Riley Bic is an allaround swimmer who will predominantly compete in the Backstroke and Breastroke, Turner said. Freshman backstroker Steven Mikels has been a pleasant surprise Turner said.
“He’s swimming well,” said the coach. He also will compete in some Freestyle events.”

OWASSO Swimming Future Bright As Owasso Lives in the Now Class 6A swim meet in Jenks.
Braden Frazier Second-year Owasso swim coach David Estes is excited about the future of the Rams/Lady Rams program. But he is living in the now as Owasso looks to build the program. The teams are off to a good start despite not having a home pool. The teams make the daily trek to Claremore to practice in the town’s Recreation Center pool. Undaunted, Owasso is making strides behind a talented core of swimmers on both teams. “We’re starting to close the gap between us and the better teams,” Estes said, speaking primarily of the girl’s squad. “I like the direction the program is going. The administration is very supportive of us.” GIRLS

Owasso is currently ranked ninth and is led by a pair of veterans from 2013 in senior Camari Close and junior Megan Adams. Close will compete in the 200 IM and the 100 Butterfly in addition to a couple of medley relays.
Adams placed 15th in the 100 Freestyle last year. She returns to swim the same event this year. Freshman Vanessa Tracz has burst on the varsity scene for second-year Owasso head coach David Estes. Tracz swims the 50, 100 and 200 Freestyle events. Estes said he will have to narrow that to only two events in the state tournament. “It will depend on where we are as a team as to which events she swims,” Estes said.
Katie Shin, a move-in from the state of Washington, has been a pleasant surprise in both the Backstroke and IM events while senior Malia Swerdloff, a firstyear swimmer, has a good shot at qualifying for state in the 50 Free. “I think the rankings are a little misleading,” Estes said. “We’ve
Samantha Harizal beaten a couple of teams that ahead of us. If we swim really well, we could finish fourth or fifth at state.”
Estes is optimistic about the next few years with young swimmers, including a pair of talented eighth graders who will join the varsity next year.” BOYS
The Rams might be unranked but they have a trio of standouts in Jerod Dyke, Stephen Ditmer and Aaron Keesling.
Vanessa Tracz
Oklahoma Driving School Jordan Riley Dyke, a junior, was a state qualifier in the 500 Freestyle. Look for him to compete in the that event as well as the 200 Free. “He should be in the top eight,” Estes said. “What I like about him is he came out of nowhere. He’s lost 40 pounds in the last year and a half. People will be shocked at how fast he swims at state.”
Ditmer rejoined the team in December after swimming a year ago. Also a member of the Owasso band, Ditmer, a sophomore, will swim relay events. The sky is the limit for the 6-foot-2 Keesling, a freshman.
“He has a big future ahead of him,” Estes said. “We have a couple of good eighth graders that will be coming to the varsity next year.”

Youth Basketball Robert Meachem Elite There are plenty of very good traveling basketball teams all across the country but one making headlines right here in Tulsa is the Robert Meachem Elite, a fourth grade AAU team. The team is based out of the Rose Bowl here in Tulsa and is coached by Dwayne Whitaker, Darnell Whitaker and Chadd Evans. The team is sponsored by Tulsa native and New Orleans Saints receiver Robert Meechem and is comprised of six players from Tulsa, two from Jenks, one from Owasso and one from Chicago Illinois. For Dwayne, the biggest reward for coaching the team is in the faces of his players.
“Just seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces. I just look at it as a way to give back to the community and a way to give the kids something they want to do, which is play basketball.”
Last season the team traveled to Arkansas twice, Oklahoma City three times as well as one trip to Dallas and another to New Orleans. This year the team
