Tulsa Area 2014-2015 Issues

WINTER 2014-2015

Over the course of the 2014-2015 school year we here at VYPE witnessed so many great feats by our local Tulsa-Area athletes. The region brought us state titles in baseball, basketball, golf, soccer, tennis, track, wrestling and football. We got to enjoy all of that action up close and personal and we wanted to give our readers the same opportunity by sharing some of the best photos our photographers took this year. 14

Annual Winners Mazzio’s Corporation and VYPE have teamed up to grant a $2,000 Scholarship for one boy and one girl to be presented in the June issue of VYPE. Here is how it will work: • Each month, VYPE will take nominations for an Athlete of the Month and a boy and girl will be elected the Mazzio’s Athlete of the Month. This will be a chance for boys and girls of all sports to be recognized for their performances. • Nominees can be mailed to scholarship. Oklahoma@VYPE.com. Give the nominee’s name, school, sport and reasons you believe the athlete should be awarded the scholarship. • The nominees will need to be seniors this season but keep in mind that their accomplishments as juniors will be taken into consideration as well. • Each monthly recipient will be a candidate for the scholarship that will be awarded in June. • All sports will be eligible to have a nomination. • The male and female athletes who are chosen each month will have a pictured bio, highlighting their accomplishments, placed on this page.

Jacoby Hicks Victory Christian School Victory Christian wide receiver Jacoby Hicks proved he could catch nearly anything that comes his way this season. Racking up 64 catches in 2014 Hicks proved to be one of quarterback Keats Calhoon’s favorite targets. Hicks piled up 1,111 yards and 17 touchdowns on those 64 grabs. Not just an offensive weapon though Hicks was also been a key part of the Victory defense making 93 total tackles, an average of 8.4 stops per game. Hicks also picked off three passes and recovered a fumble as he showed he had a true nose for the ball. Hicks was also a major weapon for the Victory special teams unit returning kicks and punts. Hicks averaged over 25 yards per kickoff return in 2014 and over 19 yards per punt return. Overall Hicks helped Victory to an 8-3 record last fall and has signed to play football at Southern Nazarene University in 2015. For his effort on the gridiron Jacoby Hicks is the Mazzio’s Male Athlete of the Year.

Morgan Long Charles Page High School Morgan Long is no stranger to history. As a sophomore in 2012 she qualified for the state cross country meet and earned the best finish ever by a female at Charles Page High School coming in with a time of 11:49.89 good enough for 12th place overall. Last year as a junior Long again made history as part of the first Charles Page girls team to qualify as a team for the state meet. Long again did her part at state finishing in eighth place overall with a time of 11:52. Long added to her trophy case during the 2014 track season when she placed third in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:11.86. That was also an improvement from her fifth place finish in the event as a sophomore. This fall Long turned in the best finish of her career at the state cross country meet and took second place with a time of 18:11.7. This spring Long kept her amazing year going by winning gold in the 1600 with a time of 5:05.32. For her continued excellence in both cross country and track Morgan Long is the Mazzio’s Female Athlete of the Year.

The Strathe Brothers Brothers Brandon and Jared Strathe are varsity golfers for Rejoice Christian. Both went to state this year. So what happened when they were one stroke apart in the final round? VYPE: Do you two always play each other this close when you’re just on the course playing for fun?

Brandon: Yes, we go back and forth. Either of us could beat the other on any given day. It's always a pretty fun match between us.

Jared: Being the younger brother I am always trying to beat Brandon, it makes me a better golfer having the competition. This is the first year I have been able to beat him sometimes.

VYPE: After day one Jared was up by one stroke. Did you guys talk about how close you were to each other on the leader

board? Brandon: No I don't think either of us was really thinking about beating the other. We were more focused on playing good and trying to win as a team. Jared: No, we were more concerned with our team score.

VYPE: How aware of the scores were you during day two? Did either of you know what the other was shooting? Brandon: I basically knew how Jared was playing the whole time because he was playing right behind me. I knew our scores would be close so it was cool to see how we matched up at the end. Jared: No, I was just trying to post a good score for our team. My golf coach told me Brandon was playing good and that made me feel good about our team chances. VYPE: Usually there is a natural com-

petition between brothers to win. Were either of you thinking it would be nice to finish a stroke or two ahead of the other or at that point was it all about the team? Brandon: It never really crossed my mind during the round. I was more focused on trying to beat the kids in my group but it would have for sure been nice to finish one stroke better than Jared! Jared: I am always trying to beat Brandon when we are playing practice rounds, but in the state tournament, I was just trying to post a low round and play my best.

VYPE: What was the reaction after it was over and you realized you both shot a 217? Brandon: Neither of us got to brag about beating the other so I guess it worked out! We kind of joked about it and said we were gonna have to play a playoff the next day at the Patriot to decide who got 3rd place! Jared: We were more upset about not winning state as a team, but we were both happy about the way we played.

On the court Peterson hopes to help the Lady Rams to another run at a gold ball in her upcoming senior season but off the court Peterson is just as talented. In the classroom Peterson is also a star and holds a 4.0 grade point average. Throughout her junior high and high school career Peterson has challenged herself by taking advanced and AP classes.
