JUNE 2016 Mazzio’s Corporation and VYPE have teamed up to grant a $2,000 Scholarship for one boy and one girl to be presented in the June issue of VYPE. Here is how it will work: • Each month, VYPE will take nominations for an Athlete of the Month and a boy and girl will be elected the Mazzio’s Athlete of the Month. This will be a chance for boys and girls of all sports to be recognized for their performances. • Nominees can be mailed to scholarship. Oklahoma@VYPE.com. Give the nominee’s name, school, sport and reasons you believe the athlete should be awarded the scholarship. • The nominees will need to be seniors this season but keep in mind that their accomplishments as juniors will be taken into consideration as well. • Each monthly recipient will be a candidate for the scholarship that will be awarded in June. • All sports will be eligible to have a nomination. • The male and female athletes who are chosen each month will have a pictured bio, highlighting their accomplishments, placed on this page.
Lense Ramey - Kiefer
Callie Taylor - Glenpool
As a varsity basketball player for Kiefer High School Lense Ramey averaged over 27 points and nine rebounds per game. He was named to the VYPE Top 100 and was the Mazzios Athlete of the Month in February. “It is a huge honor to be selected as the Mazzios Male Athlete of the Year. I was very excited to have received the scholarship and the award. First off, I wouldn’t be anywhere close to where I am today without a relationship with God and a great family. In football and basketball, we had a great group of seniors who helped lead the teams. I started playing football my junior year and playing for coach Calvert and coach Sneed is something I will never forget. We had a disappointing loss in the second round this year but we made the quarterfinals our junior year. In basketball we had a 9-man rotation of seniors. Me, Kyle Howard, Blake & Trey Sneed, Marcus Shadowens, Gavin Hudson, Colton Kiehl, Gavin Hudson, and Bryce Lujan. Junior year we made the state tournament for the first time in school history. It was a lot of fun having my dad coach me in high school, he’s taught me almost everything I know about basketball. After basketball season, I like to relax a little bit and play golf, but as a team we have made the state tournament all four years of my high school career. Me and fellow senior Jared Tolle have played on all four of those State Tournament teams. Thank you to Mazzios, VYPE Magazine and all of my coaches and teammates,” said Ramey.
A varsity softball player for Glenpool High School Callie Taylor is the Mazzios Female Athlete of the Year. Senior Callie Taylor is a varsity softball player at Glenpool High School for head coach Trent Patterson. The centerfielder is known for her ability to make plays in the outfield. “In the two years I have coached Callie, she has continued to work and improve on the diamond but in the classroom as well. The passion and enthusiasm she plays the game with is second to none. She is very deserving of this award and I am extremely proud of her drive to better not only her own ability but also Glenpool softball,” said coach Patterson. Her honors include 2013 All-Conference Outfielder, 2014 Conference Defensive Player of the Year, 2015 1st Team All-Region, 2015 1st Team All-State and in track Taylor was a 2013 state qualifier in the 300 hurdles and in 2015 she placed 4th at state in the 4X200 relay. Taylor said she was honored to be selected as the Mazzios Female Athlete of the Year and offered these parting words for future award winners, “Give it your all until you fall,” said Taylor and give it her all she certainly did.

Q&A Charlie Brown Broken Arrow Girls Golf VYPE: Coach, Taylor Dobson finished her two rounds at state in second place. Talk about her two rounds and the finish. Brown: To be honest I don’t spend much time watching Taylor she is very capable on her own. She is very good at course management and being able to keep her emotions under control. On her first round she struggled with her putting. Didn’t make any putt of any distance at all. After round one she made an adjustment and putted much better round two, which was the key to both her rounds. VYPE: Korena Aills has performed well this season. She shot a 77 and 84 for her two rounds. What did you think of her tournament? Brown:: Very proud of Korena from her sophomore year to her senior year she has really improved in many areas. Day 1 14

Jenks knocked off Norman North, 1-0 after Owasso dropped the opening round game to Edmond Memorial, 3-1. That set up a Jenks vs. Memorial semifinal game, but it was all Memorial in this one. The bulldogs went on to beat Deer Creek in the finals, 2-0. Shane Lang was the standout pitcher for the Rams recording 48 strikeouts for the season. For Jenks it was a trio of players that got it done including Matt Gaskins, Brett Standlee and Sy Snedeker. Class 5A Bishop Kelley opened the tournament with a huge win over Duncan, 13-0, but would run into a hot Shawnee team in the semifinals. It took extra innings, but the Wolves were able to overcome the Comets offense and win, 8-5. Shawnee
would go on to defeat Piedmont, 9-0 in the finals.
Class 4A The Berryhill Chiefs did not have an easy path to the finals. In the quarterfinals the Chiefs faced Bethany and the game came down to who played the best defense and would not make mistakes late in the game. The Chiefs prevailed, 2-1 setting up a Berryhill vs. Blanchard semifinal game. In that matchup the Chiefs displayed the offense their fans have grown accustom to seeing winning, 8-3. But in the finals the Heritage Hall Chargers were just one run better taking the gold, 2-1.
Class 3A Verdigris was probably the favorite heading into the Class 3A tournament, but Metro Christian had some hot bats and were peaking at the right time. The Patriots defeated Lincoln Christian to kickoff their run to the finals, 7-0. Next up was Kingston. The Redskins took out Beggs and were confident heading into the game, but Metro did not let off the throttle winning over Kingston, 8-1. But the Cardinals were too much in the finals as they take down the Patriots, 11-3. Class 2A Christian Heritage 8 Silo 1 Class A Binger-Oney 3 Roff 1 Class B Red Oak 10 Ft. Cobb-Broxton 1

Jenks Baseball The Jenks Trojans season ended in the semifinals of the Class 6A state baseball tournament, but the enthusiasm for this team does not end there. Head coach Danny Morgan and the Jenks Trojans have spent the last 14 seasons hunting that elusive state championship trophy. The 2016 version of the Trojans developed the right chemistry, had the right players and appeared to be on track to break the stranglehold Owasso enjoyed over the last 14 years.
But this season would not be the year for either team. Instead the Memorial Bulldogs of Edmond were able to pull off the upset of not only Owasso in the quarterfinals and Jenks in the semifinals, but held on to defeat Deer Creek in the finals. For the Trojans the loss hurt, but as the seniors left the field for the final time, they knew the program was better and it was being left in good hands. Pitcher Brett Standlee continues to show he has the type of arm that can lead a team through a tough schedule and the versatility to play other positions in the infield. Brock Nowlin has become a vacuum and second, while Sy Snedeker can start in the outfield or at
catcher. Grant Ketchel is solid at first and sophomore Noah Barber was stellar on the mound all year. Fellow sophomore Tanner Lawrence has seen significant time on the mound and in the outfield. His ability to get hits will certainly help the Trojans in 2017. Freshman Bryce Osmond also contributes on the mound and in the infield. Regan LaPlant and Hayden Johnson are quick outfielders and Johnson, a lefty, can also pitch. The senior cast on this team has set the tone for 2017. The expectations moving forward are to play hard and get back to the tournament. Guys like Carter Nelson, Matt Gaskins, Nicky Woodley, Rand Partin, Josh Foster, Matt Greene, Jordan Herzog, Josh Foster, Morgan Thomas, Andrew Morris, Zach Ruley, Dylan Taylor, Thatcher Chonka and Preston Burns have left a legacy of winning for the underclassmen to follow. Now, they pick up the sticks and their focus to 2017. JUNE 2016

much anticipated game with Union in the finals. The Lady Rams played hard and did get a goal, but the Redskins seem to have all the answers and Union would go on to win, 4-1. Lady Ram Golf Faith Belmear, Jordan Leonard, Katherine Horne, Alexus McDonald, and Madison LaValle carved their name into the history books of Owasso with their 14 stroke win over Norman at the Class 6A girls state golf tournament at The Club at Indian Springs in Broken Arrow. of 156, good enough for a fifth place finish. The win marks the first girls golf title in school history.

faced Luciano Razzuoli of Broken Arrow and the matchup went to Razzuoli. But Mitchell had another opportunity against Jake Golightly of Edmond North, but the day just didn’t belong to Mitchell. Regardless of the final outcome, Mitchell showed the state under the leadership of head coach Drew White, the Sand Springs tennis program is improving. Nashoba Pannell and Quintin Wimer paired up for the No.2 Doubles tournament giving the Sandites two more tennis players at state. The tandem won their first match against Yukon, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
That set up a second round match against powerhouse and eventual champions Edmond Memorial. The 6-1, 6-0 final meant Pannel and Wimer were headed to the other side of the bracket where they would face Yukon, the team they beat in the opening round. This time Yukon would revail, 2-6, 7-6, 7-6, but everyone watching agreed it was a hard fought match. Other team members included Michael Som de Cerff, Brock Smith, and Logan Bateman. Congrats to the boys varsity tennis team at Charles Page High School for their efforts at state!
Sand Springs Slow-Pitch Coach Shelli Brown and the Lady Sandites finished the 2016 season swinging away and playing their style of ball. The Lady Sandites followed up a great fastpitch season with a slow-pitch season that witnessed them having to play 13 of their 18 games on the road. Overall the team finished the season with a record of 11-7, but with tournaments at Haskell, Jenks and the regional tournament all away
the Sandites had to become road warriors this season.
Leading the way were AllVYPE selectees Sydney Pennington at shortstop, Goose Salyers and Jessica Collins in the outfield and Jessica Schuler at catcher. Salyers and Schuler are joined by Stella Millican as the teams only seniors, which means this squad is young and looking good for the future. Pennington and Collins
return next year with a group of talented freshmen that includes Cameron Clemons at third, Kimi Presnell at second, Madelyn Blair at first and Kellie Johnson and Jacie Taber in the outfield. Rachel Blair is another junior outfielder on the roster for next season. Finding a catcher to replace Schuler and a pitcher to replace Millican will be the priority next spring.

Character is a combination of qualities that distinguishes one person or group from another. VYPE celebrates achievements of local high school athletes by presenting the monthly “Character Counts Award.” With three members of the varsity golf team finishing in the upper half of the field at the state tournament, the Sapulpa boy’s showed hard work will pay off.
The Sapulpa boy’s varsity golf team shot their way into the state tournament this year after a season of improvements by each member of the team. Five golfers represented the Chiefs at the Class 6A state golf tournament held at Karsten Creek Golf Course in Stillwater. The team included Daniel Reed, Clay Venable, Evan Linfoot, Logan Richards and Brennan Morgan. Known as being one of the best courses in Oklahoma, Karsten Creek was a great test for the Sapulpa team. Daniel Reed led the way for the Chiefs with his three round score of 243, good enough to tie for 22nd in a field that featured some tremendous talent. Clay Venable also had a high finish to help the Chiefs to a top ten finish in the team standings landing in 8th one stroke ahead of Stillwater and only five strokes behind Edmond Deer Creek. The team showed what can happen when your individual effort helps the overall success of the team and the program. Look for coach Andy Tuttle to build on their success as the program continues to make strides towards becoming one of the top teams in 6A. 26

Dani Oliver Owasso High School How long have you been involved with FCA? I have been involved in FCA for three years. Who influenced you to join? My brother Cameron influenced me to join. How has FCA made an impact in your life on and off the course? FCA has made an impact on my life in so many ways. There’s nothing better than meeting every Thursday and fellowshipping with some of the greatest people in the world. As I’m on the court and track (I play volleyball and run track) it gives me a sense of peace knowing I have a group of people that will always be there for me and supporting me. How have your beliefs helped you as an athlete? My beliefs have helped me as an athlete tremendously. It’s so easy to get down on yourself if you have a bad game or race, but God comforts me and gives me hope and peace knowing that it’s such a small detail in your life and there’s so much more to life than a game or a race. What is your favorite Bible verse and why? My favorite verse is John 14:27, This verse is great to keep in mind as graduation is nearing and in general. It’s comforting to know God is with us everywhere we go. “Peace I leave with you; my peace i give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled an do not be afraid.” JUNE 2016

Team of the Month Kellyville Softball Head coach Scott Neighbors and the Lady Ponies of Kellyville have seen their share of highs and lows, but one thing you will always notice about this team is they come to play regardless of the odds. This season was marked with big wins over Class 6A opponents like Bartlesville and Memorial High School as well as a 5-4 win over ninth ranked Cushing in overtime. We caught up with coach Neighbors to get his take on the season and what it might mean to the program moving forward.
VYPE: Coach, your team
finished the season ranked No.11 in Class 5A. Do you pay attention to the rankings and do the girls know where they are ranked during the season?
Neighbors: We do pay some attention to it just for the fact as the season goes on we try to set ourselves up for the best pairings in the playoffs.

VYPE: Was there someone on the team this year that always seemed to provide a spark when needed? Neighbors: We actually had several. It was more like which one was it going to be this time. Our main power hitters got intentionally walked a lot so we had several different people pick up the slack and made teams pay for the walks. VYPE: When you look down
the roster are there some names that really stood out this season?
Neighbors: We had several that stood out but Madison Neighbors was voted MVP of our conference as a freshman and Mayson Evans was pick as an all conference selection. Makiah Torres and Shayda Billingsly were selected as conference Honorable mentions. There were several that played a large role in our success this
season. We push really hard to remember that it is a team no matter what the ones that were mentioned all received their honors do to there teammates around them.
VYPE:What will you remember most about this class? Neighbors: The best thing
about this team is they are all back next year. We return every starter and we’re looking for a great future for this program. Editor’s Note: Evans finished the season hitting .587 with 27 hits, 12 homeruns and 31 RBI’s. Neighbors, the MVP, finished with a batting average of .742 on 52 hits, 11 homeruns and 41 RBI’s. She was intentionally walked 16 times.
Sarina Brothers: Kellyville Cheer/ Pro Cheer Revolution Making a varsity cheer squad is not easy. For freshman Sarina Brothers playing sports came natural. She’s played on the basketball and softball teams, but it wasn’t until she turned her focused to cheer, did this sometimes quiet and shy student athlete open up and blossom into the person she is today. “I’ve always been kind of quiet and shy. In school I was slow to get involved with other students and struggled a little academically, but with a lot of hard work and tutoring I’ve overcome this adversity and I carry that determination with me every day,” said Brothers. Her parents and coaches noticed she really opened up thanks in part to the efforts of her cheer coaches. “While she has been on the school
basketball and softball teams, her mother and I feel that the coaches she has had with cheer opened her up. Making the varsity cheer team as a freshman is a big accomplishment and we are proud of her for it,” said Brothers father Alan. Brothers’ younger sister Clarisa wanted to cheer and convinced Sarina and her twin sister Alaina to get involved. Alaina cheered with Sarina in 6th grade and has cheered with Pro Cheer Revolution this past season. Alaina will likely cheer with Pro Cheer Revolution this year as well but has opted to become a trainer instead of joining the varsity cheer squad at Kellyville. “Pro Cheer Revolution is a lot of fun and a lot of work. The coaches treat everyone with respect and fairly. There is none of the favoritism based on skill level that is prevalent with some other organizations. When it comes to training Joey, loves
everyone, but halfway through conditioning we are sure he forgets that. PCR is a family gym. We work together, play together, eat together and win together,” said Brothers. “We have had skate nights, gone to see the Tulsa Oilers play hockey, had a cookout and plan more family events this summer. Maybe a Drillers game or Safari Joe’s H2O water park. We all know we earn trophies at the gym, we just go to competition to pick them up.” Brothers and the rest of the team feel lucky to have coaches that take an interest in not only their success, but their experience as well. “Lindsay, my varsity coach has been great. She and Joey make a good pair for getting our girls the guidance they need. She has years of experience and can still fly with the best of them. She and Joey cheered together for a number of years before starting Pro Cheer Revolution,” said Brothers.
