A senior at Coweta High School, Holmes has become a two-sport athlete in football and basketball. Playing for both teams has taught Holmes what it means to be a teammate, even when things aren’t going your way. As a member of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation Holmes has learned the importance of family and remembering the rich history of his people. “I am part of a great tribe with a rich history and a promising future,” said Holmes. “I am from the Wind Clan and my heritage comes from the McIntosh family.”

He’s also a member of the National Honor Society and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. The Muscogee (Creek) Nation not only plays a big role in his daily life, but in his future education as well with the Johnson O’Malley Program.

Too Soon For Football? It’s never too soon to talk football. VYPE editor Brad Heath takes a look at some of the early headlines as coaches begin to look towards spring practice in May. Replacing Mr. Football The Jenks Trojans graduated their most decorated quarterback in program history as Cooper Nunley signs with Drake University. So who takes over? Freshman Bryce Osmond is the early favorite to take the reins. Osmond backed up Nunley as freshman and did see some late playing time in several games. Osmond wasn’t asked to do too much in those games, but taking snaps and gaining the varsity experience was important for the young quarterback. Also listed on the roster is will-be junior Trevon Miller, who is of similar size to Osmond (with the exception of being a few pounds heavier) should come into spring practice and compete for playing time. Then there’s the wild card in Brett Standlee. Standlee played wide receiver and tight end after a short hiatus from the team. Standlee was a backup quarterback during the 2014 season, but his size and ability to catch the ball could mean his services are better used at receiver. There’s always the possibility of a transfer. know that quarterback position could be wide open at Jenks and that could mean someone takes a shot at filling some really big shoes. Whoever gets the job they will have a solid running game with a talented pool of receivers that includes Isaiah Epps, Standlee, and newcomer Lane Washington. Broken Arrow Reloads The Tigers and head coach David Alexander are coming off a season that witnessed them beat Jenks in the regular season and make it to the state title game. Coach Alexander has turned his focus to replacing key spots on the coaching staff and working the depth chart to replace some key seniors. Offensive coordinator Brady Walz has left the team to move back to Iowa, which leaves a big vacancy in one of the top programs in the state. A decision on his replacement is expected to come in March. Running back Jamall Shaw, offensive tackle Rowdy Frederick, defensive end Gage Kaiser, and wide receiver Samuel Akem have all moved on to the next level. Quarterback Cade Yeager returns to lead the Tigers after throwing for 1,850 yards and 17 touchdowns. The Next Jacobs The case of Joshua Jacobs
from McLain had everyone shaking their heads this year. How does someone go from being a somewhat unknown to the highest recruited kid in the state? The experts were baffled. So who will be the next Joshua Jacobs? I’ll submit three names for consideration. First up is Jordan Curtis at Jenks. Curtis is 6-foot1, 175-pounds and the senior is explosive on both sides of the ball. He can play running back or defensive back and special teams. Next up is Seth Boomer at Collinsville. As the teams quarterback Boomer passed for 1,987 yards and 22 touchdowns. Solid number and the kid is 6-foot3, 180-pounds. Finally everyone needs to take a look at Coby Tillman from Bixby. The 6-foot, 230-pound linebacker accounted for 159 tackles as a sophomore and notched six sacks. Big, strong and quick makes Tillman one to watch. Holland Hall Begins OSSAA Play The Dutch now know where their new home is for football in 2016. Class 2A-7 features ChouteauMazie, Colcord, Kansas, Ketchum, Salina and natural rival Victory Christian.

VYPE State Basketball Takes Over Tulsa
The Oral Roberts University Mabee Center hosted the Class 6A and 5A state basketball tournament again this year and the teams did not disappoint fans. Class 6A What if I told you in December the Owasso Lady Rams would play for a state title this year? Would you believe me? Most would say Broken Arrow or Sapulpa, but all season long the Lady
Rams continued to improve and when they needed their best effort they got it in the tournament. In the opening round they defeated another favorite in Choctaw, 55-45 setting up the fourth game this season against Broken Arrow. Beating Owasso for a fourth time in one season proved to be too difficult as the Lady Rams won, 48-43. That punched their ticket to the finals where they would face another favorite in Midwest City. The Lady Rams gave a valiant effort, but came up six points short of winning a gold ball. Terryn Milton and Rachel Skalnik were named to the All-Tournament team for Owasso.
the Titans close, swapping the lead several times in the game, but Carl Albert’s Trey Hopkins putback at the last second was unstoppable. The 56-54 win was tough to swallow for Memorial fans, but head coach Bobby Allison was positive and encouraged his players to be proud of their effort this season.
Class 5A Class 5A boys would come down to two teams, Tulsa Memorial and Carl Albert. Both feature electric guards with offenses that can score quickly. Led by Caleb Nero and Derek Guest, both AllTournament selectees, the Chargers kept MARCH 2016

State Wrestling Highlights Area wrestlers took to the mat for that chance at wrestling immortality. Several area athletes finished the year on top of their weight class. Here are the highlights from the 2016 state wrestling finals in Oklahoma City. Class 6A Broken Arrow and Sand Springs knew they would be in the running for a team title this year, but it was Choctaw that pulled away in the end. The Tigers finished second thanks to the efforts of three first place finishers in Isaiah Page (170), Zach Marcheselli (182) and Skyler Haynes (195). The trio went a combined 7411 on the season. Marcheselli is the freshman of the group giving coach Jones a solid podium prospect for three more years. Sand Springs product Daton Fix continued his tear through 6A with a, 23-8 technical fall over Dalton Duffield of Westmoore. Fix finished the season with a record of 45-0. Jack Karstetter (132) and Beau Bratcher (138) finished runnerup in their respective weights. Jenks senior Drew Hinkle (170) placed second to Page of Broken Arrow, while two Union wrestlers Moses Mayhue (160) and Seth Mischler
(220) lost close decisions in the finals. Bixby’s Nic Roller grabbed a state title at 220-pounds finishing with a record of 21-1 on the season. Class 5A A dominating performance from the Coweta put them in second place behind team champs, Collinsville. But the Coweta wrestlers walked away with four state titles. Bennett Moudy (113), Dillon Prutch (120), Bear Hughes (182) and Griffin Qualls (HWT) had outstanding performances at the Big House. Qualls finished his career at Coweta with his third state title. The Collinsville duo of Justin Walker (145) and Elijah Tanner (152) were unstoppable as they tore through the bracket. Walker finished the season at 43-9, while Tanner went 48-3. Edison sophomore Jerome Townsell brought home the gold at 170-pounds over Lawton Mac senior Donovan Washington with a, 6-1 decision victory. Matt Smith of Bishop Kelley was runner-up to Skiatook’s Beau Wooden at 195-pounds. Class 4A
first place finishes. Scout Skidgel (145) pinned Sallisaw’s Woody Click for his first state title, while brother Tanner Skidgel (132) was going for his third state title against Tanner Litterell of Tuttle, but came up short. Dalton Abney (152) also lost to a Tuttle wrestler in Beau Guffey, 3-0. Both Skidgel and Abney will return next season. At heavyweight, Cascia Hall’s Nathan Martin was stellar in both of his matches. In the finals he pinned Brandon Mason of Tuttle at the 5:23 mark. The Commandos would finish in second behind team champion Tuttle. Catoosa standout Branden Ferguson finished runnerup to Brock Martin of Oologah at 195-pounds. Class 3A Tanner Ward of Berryhill finished his junior year with a record of 16-2 and a state runner-up medal after losing in the finals to Cale Betchan of Perry. Two wrestlers in Class 3A finished with perfect seasons. They were Triston Cortez of Kingfisher (420) and Kaden Gfeller of Heritage Hall (33-0).

Rivals to Teammates VYPE Top 50 players Daniel DeSimone of Bishop Kelley and Trevor Boone of Memorial are not only rivals on the diamond, but summer league teammates and future Oklahoma State Cowboys. So we got them together to learn more about the rivals turned teammates.
Daniel DeSimone
VYPE: Let the readers get to know you guys a little more. What age did you start playing baseball and what was the name of the team and the league? DeSimone: I started playing baseball at the age of four. I played on a team called the Braves in Bixby because it was the only place that allowed 4-year-olds to play tee-ball. Boone: I first started with T-ball at the age of five with the MacArther Generals, in Tulsa Little League. VYPE: Did you or do you have a favorite MLB team? Why did you become a fan of that team? DeSimone: The New York Yankees have always been my favorite team because I grew up idolizing Derek Jeter. Boone: I don’t really have a favorite team I just have favorite players, such as Adam Jones, Mike Trout, George Springer. VYPE: When did you first meet

the guy you’re on the cover with? DeSimone: We played against each other growing up and started playing for Sandlot our freshman year and have played together ever since. Boone: Ninth grade year with our first year with Sandlot. VYPE: Now you both have decided to sign with Oklahoma State University. What was the recruiting process like for you and was OSU the school you’ve always wanted to attend? DeSimone: I enjoyed having college coaches watch me play during the summer. I wasn’t set on a particular school, but when coach Holliday called and I went there to visit, I knew it was the right fit. Boone: The process has been an unreal experience. I always knew I wanted to stay in state, then I took my visits and Oklahoma State just felt like a home away from home. VYPE: Let’s have some fun. Try and answer the following questions with just a few words. Favorite thing to watch on TV? DeSimone: Don’t watch much TV, but either ESPN or Outdoor channels. Boone: Impractical Jokers. VYPE: Favorite food? DeSimone: Pizza. Boone: Chinese food. VYPE: Best nickname on the team? DeSimone: Double D. Boone: Boz. VYPE: The last person to call you? DeSimone: Cassie Farmer. Boone: My mom. VYPE: One or two words to describe your senior season. DeSimone:: Unfinished business. Boone: Unforgettable.
Oklahoma is loaded with talented baseball players good enough to play at the next level or even have their name called during the Major League Baseball draft. So, after hours of debate in the VYPE office we’ve finally agreed to this list of the VYPE Top 50(ish) baseball players in Oklahoma.

MARCH 2016 Mazzio’s Corporation and VYPE have teamed up to grant a $2,000 Scholarship for one boy and one girl to be presented in the June issue of VYPE. Here is how it will work: • Each month, VYPE will take nominations for an Athlete of the Month and a boy and girl will be elected the Mazzio’s Athlete of the Month. This will be a chance for boys and girls of all sports to be recognized for their performances. • Nominees can be mailed to scholarship. Oklahoma@VYPE.com. Give the nominee’s name, school, sport and reasons you believe the athlete should be awarded the scholarship. • The nominees will need to be seniors this season but keep in mind that their accomplishments as juniors will be taken into consideration as well. • Each monthly recipient will be a candidate for the scholarship that will be awarded in June. • All sports will be eligible to have a nomination. • The male and female athletes who are chosen each month will have a pictured bio, highlighting their accomplishments, placed on this page.
Haley Geissler - Owasso
Griffin Qualls - Coweta
Senior Haley Geissler from Owasso High School is the Mazzios Athlete of the Month. The cross country and track star is expected to have a great spring in her final year at Owasso. Running competitively since the seventh grade, Geissler is the defending state championship in the 800 and was a member of the 4X800 relay team that placed fourth at state last year. She’s also looking to run the mile race where she finished sixth as a junior. During the state cross country meet Geissler crossed the finish line in 7th place helping the Owasso cross country team to a 3rd place overall team finish. Geissler also set a new Owasso High School record in the 5K with a time of 18:35 and has become someone the underclassmen on the team look up to on the track and in the classroom. Geissler carries a 4.0 GPA and his signed with Oklahoma State University to run track and cross country this fall.
Griffin Qualls of Coweta High School became a three-time state champion after winning the Class 5A heavyweight division during the state wrestling tournament in February. Qualls, a senior wrestler and football player, spent the entire year ranked No.1 in the 5A heavyweight division and he didn’t disappoint during the state tournament. In the first round Qualls faced senior Nate Connelly from Bishop McGuinness. Qualls won the match by pinning Connelly and advanced to the semifinals where he would face another senior in Keegan Pride from Altus. It was a close match, but Qualls was able to get a decision victory, 3-2 over Pride setting up the 5A heavyweight finals between Qualls and Shawnee product, Creed Humphrey. Only a junior Humphrey entered the tournament with an undefeated record, but Qualls would put an end to that as the defending champion would get the win over Humphrey, 2-1 giving Qualls his third state title. The win helped Coweta to finish second in the team standings.

Jake Ward Charles Page High School How long have you been involved with FCA? I’ve started going to FCA when I was in the 7th grade. Who influenced you? My youth pastor told me about it and he would come speak every now and then. How has FCA made an impact in your life on and off the field? It has created another support group. Whether I’m struggling in my faith or in my athletics, it’s the same group of people that I can go to for help. How have your beliefs helped you as an athlete? My faith has made me want to work harder and be better. When I’m nervous or stressed out I always say a quick prayer and it calms me down. What is your favoriate Bible verse and why? Philippians 4:13. It’s a verse than many people say but don’t really understand how powerful it really is. If you really take time and think about it, it’s amazing. No matter the struggle no matter the circumstance, Christ is greater and you can do anything through him.

Mat Kings in Sand Springs Head coach Kelly Smith has built one of the top programs in the state and has his sights set on even higher accomplishments for the Sandites. Charles Page High School sent nine wrestlers to state this year and only one graduates this spring. That means the third place finish in teams points could tighten up next year as Broken Arrow and Choctaw graduate some of their talent. If you don’t know who Daton Fix is by now, then you’ve missed out on one of the greatest runs for a high school wrestler in recent memory. Fix went 45-0 this season and won his third state title at his third different weight. Fix easily defeated Dalton Duffield of Westmoore, 23-8 for the technical fall win. Fix now sets his sights on joining a list of only 32 wrestlers since 1922
that have won four titles in a row. He would be the first wrestler from Sand Springs to do so. Jack Karstetter placed second at 132-pounds finishing 38-8 on the season after a close, 3-2 match against Kruz Simons of Edmond North. At 138-pounds Beau Bratcher also placed second to Jaxon Gilmore of Yukon. Also making the podium was Blake Sargent at 120-pounds. Sargent wrestled to a 41-11 record this year. Zane Basma defeated Anthony Gonzalez of Enid by technical fall to take third at 160-pounds. Sophomore standout Payton Scott placed fourth at 152-pounds giving the Sandites six wrestlers on the podium.
Jack Karstetter Other state qualifiers for Sand Springs included freshman Riley Weir at 106-pounds, junior Michael Ritchey at 113-pounds, and Trace Fleischman at 170-pounds. Fleischman was the lone senior to make it to state. Coach Smith’s job is not totally done. There are some holes he will need to fill next year. The heavier weights from 170-heavyweight are wide open. Also look for someone to step up at 145 as the Sandites look to make a push at a dual state title and a team title.

Not So Slow in Sand Springs The Lady Sandites enter the slowpitch season riding the high of a great fastpitch season in the fall. Head coach Shelli Brown understands the importance of team chemistry. She’s spent a career working on the little things that can bring a team together. Last fall her fastpitch softball team played for a state title thanks to the efforts of several players that now take the field for slowpitch season. “Working together to continue to build upon the team chemistry that we developed in the fall is the focus right now,” said coach Brown. Leading the way are two seniors, Jessica Schuler and Goose Salyers. Both lefties and both are dangerous at the plate. Schuler
will start at catcher, but also step into the circle and pitch, while Salyers will play the outfield. Both players have signed letters of intent to play in college. Schuler is headed to NSU, while Salyers will attend Southeastern Oklahoma State. Sydney Pennington, another fastpitch player, is the shortstop most coaches dream of having. Only a junior, her quickness and throwing accuracy has several schools looking to add her to their college rosters. Fellow junior Jessica Collins joins Salyers in the outfield with Rachel Blair.
Several freshmen enter the fray as Madelyn Blair, Kimi Presnell, Cameron Clemons and Jacie Taber. Clemons could start at third, while Presnell looks to lock up second base. Blair is a capable first baseman, while Taber will see time in the outfield. Senior Stella Millican will share pitching and catching duties with Schuler.

Sapulpa Soccer On The Rise LADY CHIEFTAINS
Colten Broughton When you think of Sapulpa athletics does soccer come to mind? Well it should. The girls and boys teams have talent and good numbers as they both focus on creating a culture of winning.
Head coach Lori Arundell and assistant coach Tiffany Admire have worked hard to get their girls on the same page and raise the level of excitement coming into the new season. “We’re very excited about the season coming off making the state tournament for the first time in several years. We have a lot of new young talent and a new soccer facility. We’re excited to have our own field with soccer lines,” said coach Arundell.
Leading the way is senior midfielder Kelsey Gordon. Last season she scored 13 goals with four assists. Forward and fellow senior Morgan Medina accounted for nine goals and four assists. The pair made All-District last season and expect to have a similar performance this season. Mackenzie Biggs has the potential to become a real difference maker from her midfielder position. In 2015 she scored three goals and had four assists as a sophomore. Defenders Paige Arundell and Stephanie Prescott have stepped up their play and bring intensity to the pitch. Goalie Cierra Kent played in 12 games and had a 63.5% save rate. Seniors Izzy Bacon and Whitney Kamies hang up the basketball shoes for cleats as both will start as midfielders for coach Arundell. CHIEFTAINS The bench is deep for head coach Juan de Dios Castillo giving him plenty opportunities to keep players fresh. “This is my second year as head coach at

Sapulpa and this season we are laying the foundation of what the program is going to be about. I am excited about the response of the students. We had 40 players trying out for the team; this is something that hasn’t happened in over a decade,” said coach Castillo. Goalkeeper Ethan Tanton is one of several seniors on the roster coach Castillo is looking to for leadership on the field. Paige McCracken, Cash Sivadon, Jacob Campbell, Cade Rivera are other seniors on the team
Coach Castillo said to look for junior Osman Munoz at forward, freshman midfielders Tanner Johnson and Ethan Castillo, and freshman defender Tyson Scott.

With so many underclassmen pushing for playing time, coach Castillo and assistant coach Cameron Mortizavi are excited to see how the competition helps the squad moving forward. Also look for Sabastian Venetti, Carson Lamproe, Aiden Haslam, Colton Broughton, Bobby Schmidth, Jaxon Zamudio and Bo Blevins. Maybe

In the past years Sapulpa has lacked school spirit and I believe that the class of 2016 had truly brought it back. We are so close and that’s what makes it so fun. Izzy: The best part of being a student athlete at Sapulpa is how close all the athletes are with each other. Each sport goes out and supports the other athletes at their events. Our senior class of 2016 has been a class that will never be forgotten.

VYPE Parker Dunn
Owasso Ram Baseball Photo By Christian Campbell With two titles in three years, the Owasso Rams appear to be one of the teams to beat again this season. Graduation has an effect on every team. The Rams lost All-State selectees Trevor McCutchin and Gabe Neph to the college ranks after they led the Rams to a, 9-8 victory over Westmoore in the 2015 Class 6A state finals. But the landscape of the roster is still loaded with talented players. Senior Parker Dunn has signed his letter of intent to play college baseball at Cowley County JC, while Shane Lang signed his letter of intent to play for NEO. Dunn was recently named Louisville Slugger 2nd Team AllAmerican. The pair brings talent and a desire to win on the field and it’s shown early on in 2016 with the Rams winning their annual Ram Invitational Tournament. One key this season may be the ability to run out several different pitchers to win games according to coach Steve Holleman. “We have six pitchers with one victory apiece.” The hot bat at the plate is junior Athanie Leeviraphan. 32

“Athaniee Leeviraphan is our leading hitter, so far, hitting .500 (11-22). Dunn is hitting .474 with two doubles, two triples and two homeruns,” said Holleman. Seniors Tyler Brown, Lance Christenberry, Bryce Hestand, Aaron Horst, Nick Keim, Jordan Lytle, Cordell Mertz, Kyle Petty, Dodger Turner, and Andrew Wilburn are all expected to play a role this season. Juniors looking to add to the success of the team are Matt Cox, Jake Enzbrenner, Alex Griffith, Keaton Latta, Athanie Leeviraphan, Colton Roberts, Bailey Smith, Sam South, and Andrew Wise. The Rams are considered one of the top teams in Class 6A with Westmoore, Mustang and Southmoore. Up next
for the Rams is their big trip to Florida where they will be tested by some of the countries best baseball teams.
