In what was an instant classic the Union Redskins came away with the Class 6A Golden Glove over Owasso, 10-9 in nine innings. It was a bases loaded, two-out walk of Redskin sophomore Josh Whisler that scored courtesy runner Cody Graham to cut down the Rams’ four-peat bid.

10

Union came out of the gates hot with three runs in the first two innings. Owasso cut the Redskin lead to one with a two run top of the third. The Rams then took the lead in the top of the fifth before Union responded with a four run bottom of the fifth fueled by back-to-back jacks by Wade Ambrose and Taylor Alspaugh. Ambrose blast was a towering shot to centerfield and his second of the game. Alspaugh’s shot was a liner just inside the right field poll. Union tacked on another run in the sixth but Owasso responded in the top of the seventh to tie the game 9-9.

Cole Webb went 4 1/3 innings giving up six earned runs on six hits. Mitch Bryant got the win as he pitched the final 2 2/3 innings for the Redskins. Phillip Wilson registered the loss for the Rams going the final 4 2/3 innings in relief. Wilson gave up three earned runs on two hits in the loss. The title game stretched the streak of either Union or Owasso winning the 6A championship one more season

GAME PLAN

as one of the two has won the Gold Glove since 2003. The Rams have won five while this title makes three for the Redskins since that time. Union finished the season 30-10 while the Rams overall record concluded at 34-7. Union made it to the title game at ONEOK Field in downtown Tulsa by defeating the Broken Arrow Tigers 6-5 and then 6-4 in the elimination game for the Tigers in Bracket A play at Bixby. The Rams run to the championship was fueled off a spectacular Saturday performance by Dylan Bundy as the junior pitcher pitched ten innings over two games as the Rams knocked off Jenks 10-7 and again in the elimination game 5-4 in 11 innings from Legion Field in Claremore.

5A

The Hornets got to the title by defeating Deer Creek 13-12 in the elimination game of bracket A. In bracket B Collinsville knocked off Bishop Kelly 7-6 to punch its ticket to ONEOK Field for the title game which was played in front of 6,954 spectators. The title was the first state baseball title for the Cardinals as well as the first state championship for a boy’s sport in school history.

The game was scoreless until a solo shot over the centerfield wall by Jake Barrios in the top of the sixth gave Weatherford its first run of the game. Barrios home run ruined what was an otherwise equally as dominant pitching performance by Zach Postoak of Berryhill. The Berryhill pitcher recorded the loss after a 6 1/3

On the arm of University of Oklahoma signee Dillon Overton the Weatherford Eagles claimed the 4-0 victory over Berryhill and the Class 4A State Championship. Overton pitched all but two innings of the Eagles three tournament games.

Randy Rodgers went the complete game for the Cardinals giving up two earned runs on five hits while striking out seven to get the win and complete his perfect 10-0 season. Collinsville centerfielder Trent Lee had web-gem, top-10 worthy catches with the first coming in the third inning as he laid out making a diving catch in shallow center robbing the Hornets’ Jon Davis. Then in the fifth inning Lee took away a hit from Grant Burke.

The Cardinals had nine hits overall with Kraig Kelly, Peter Rodriguez, Brant Werdel and Jose Olazagasti each having two hits a piece. First baseman Luis DeJesus got things going in the first with a two-run triple as many of the fans were still settling into their seats and the Cards got off to a quick 4-0 lead.

The Collinsville Cardinals came out on a mission it seemed in the Class 5A baseball state championship against Booker T. Washington getting up 7-0 in three innings and holding on to win 7-2. The Cardinals jumped on the Hornets junior starting pitcher Cale Finnell for all seven runs on seven hits over the first three innings. Finnell recorded the loss for the Hornets going just two innings as the junior wasn’t able to get out of the third before coach John Potocnik called upon Dylan Seibert.

Boston Williamson was able to get the Hornets on the board in the fourth with a double then moved to third on a wild pitch and was able to get home on an infield single as the throw went to first. Then it was Finnell that put another run on the board for BTW as he double and scored home on a single by Davey Price.

allowed only three hits in the game and finished the season with a 10-0 record.

Added insurance for Weatherford came in the top of the seventh with three runs with help on an error by the Berryhill second baseman. But RBI hits by Easton Page and Trevor Beiland gave the Eagles extra run support heading into the do or die bottom of the seventh. Page went 3-for-3 in the game with an RBI and a run. Catcher Ryan Wilson, Beiland and Nate Hunt finished the game with two hits as the Eagles claimed the sixth state baseball title and first since 2003.

Oktaha’s Cale Elam was impressive on the mound giving Rebel batters struggles early. A two-out double in the fourth tied the game at one however and got the ball rolling for Silo. A solo shot by Keach Ballard in the fifth started a two run inning as Trevor Bowman came home on a hit by Shawn Hendricks.

Overton’s complete game stat line consisted of him giving up two hits, walking three and striking out five as he kept Berryhill off the scoreboard.

The two teams breezed through the tournament on their way to the finals. Number one Silo blew the barn doors off winning 14-1 over Wister and then an 11-0 victory over number four Latta. The second ranked Oktaha Tigers beat Mangum 9-0 then took down the three seed Dale, 11-6.

In the Class 3A State Baseball Championship the Bethel Wildcats were able to down the Eufaula Ironheads 2-1 from Ed Skelton Field in Shawnee.

Fletcher captured the Class A State championship with a 4-3 win over Okarche. Taylor Smith struck out ten over six innings while not allowing an earned run. Smith helped his own cause by blasting a two-run homerun to centerfield in the first. That blast was his fourth homerun of the tournament.

Junior pitcher Jason Swafford allowed five hits and walked one in his complete game performance for the Wildcat victory. The win gave Swafford his tenth victory of the season as he finished with a 10-1 record for his junior campaign.

A Brandon Williams squeeze bunt scored courtesy runner Clint Duncan in the first inning to give Bethel the early lead. The Ironheads got on the board an inning later as Wildcat catcher Eddie Kieffer’s throw to third on a stolen base by Braddock Dobbs sailed past third baseman Dylan Lamb. Dobbs scored on the throwing error and tied the game. It wasn’t until the sixth inning when another run was scored when Bethel turned a Eufaula error and a hit by pitch along with three straight fielders’ choice to score the game winning run.

12

The Ironheads’ pitcher Brady Colbert did a great job despite the loss. Eufaula reached the finals after knocking off number one Chandler 2-1 and then defeating Purcell 6-4 in the semi-finals. The Wildcats defeated Plainview 8-0 in the opening round of the playoffs and took out Sperry 6-5 to reach the championship game. The state title is the second baseball championship in school history the other coming in 2007.

2A Same story different year could best define the Class 2A Baseball State Championship as the Silo Rebels captured its third straight title. This one came on a 3-2 victory over Oktaha and a 10 strikeout complete game outing by Rebel pitcher Logan Oller. The senior Oller

The Wildcats overcame committing four errors in the first inning. After tying the game in the first Fletcher’s Dakotah Baker scored on a passed ball in the second. A sacrifice fly in the fifth by Billy Love gave the Wildcats cushion. The title is the second in school history with the other coming in 2001 for Fletcher.

B Not only did the 1-0 victory over Red Oak for the Roff Tigers mean three consecutive baseball titles (including its fall championship) but the victory meant the school became the first to win the Fall baseball title, Boys basketball title and Spring baseball title in the same school year. The Tigers hot bats, which outscored opponents 114-1 in postseason play coming into the championship game, were held in check by Red Oak starter Mason Crenshaw. Roff finished the season 38-1 with the lone loss coming to class 6A Owasso in the Nike/Pro Nine championship game earlier in the season.

Girls - Coach Brian Elliot’s Lady Redskins came up short in their Cinderella run to the state title game, losing 2-1 to a very experienced Edmond North squad. Jennifer Abernathy scored her 19th goal of the season to get Union out front, but an equalizer from Camille Sanders and a 63rd minute strike from Courtney Dike (pronounced “dee-kay”) doomed the Lady Skins.

14

“Finally,” said senior Carly Yates. “It seem like we’ve waited forever because I thought we could have won it my freshman and sophomore years.” “Now we have this state championship,” said Sanders, who scored the game-tying goal in the second half before Dike slammed the gamewinner. “I think that puts us up there with anybody.”

Arlin Stacy

Lady Cardinals basketball Coach Arlin Stacy moved to Collinsville six years ago to become the head coach of the Lady Cardinals basketball team. He has done a great job with the team and is a good, fair coach. Stacy tries to see that each girl reaches her potential and tries to see that each girl gets to play to use her skills. Three years ago Stacy put together a cross country team. The team really worked hard all those years and finally that hard work paid off as the Cardinals moved into the Class 5A top spot when they won the East Regional Cross Country race and then went on to win State led by Jenny Dryer and Haylie and Shelbie Kirby. Being ranked No.1 was a nice surprise for Stacy and the Cardinal team, but another nice surprise was when coach Stacy was named Region 7 Cross Country Coach of the Year. Stacy is married with five children. He is a fine Christian man and a great leader at school and in the community.

5A Boys Williams Wins In Unbelievable Playoff Ardmore wrapped up another Class 5A boys golf title in 36 holes of regulation Tuesday at Emerald Falls. Then the show began. It included a bit of everything, including a snake, a canyou-believe-that shot and a dramatic playoff won by Chickasha junior Taylor Williams. McAlester junior Casey Fernandez and Williams dueled for four sudden-death holes before Williams ended a medalist playoff with a 9-foot birdie putt. Nine of Ardmore’s 10 rounds were in the 70s and the Tigers won by 41 shots over Carl Albert, whose No. 1 player, Oklahoma State signee Talor Gooch, missed qualifying for the individual playoff by one shot. Redskins Union Redskins 10 Owasso Rams 9 It took extra innings at ONEOK Field to defeat the defending state champions, but the Union Redskins did just that giving them their fifth baseball state championship in the schools history. The Owasso Rams were ranked No.1 in the state, but after a marathon game against Jenks the Rams ace, Dylan Bundy was spent and did not throw in the title game. Union was ranked No.6 in the state going into the tournament and they cap off a 30-win season with a state title. Union played error free baseball and their pitching staff came through when they needed it the most. Mitch Bryant pitch the last two innings for the Redskins and recorded the win. Wade Ambrose and Taylor Alspaugh had huge home runs in the game, while other players like Jacob Rice, Shane Kinnear and Justin Steelmon produced at the plate and on the bags. The title is the first for Union since the 2006 season when they beat Owasso, 4-3.

Like every other school in Oklahoma Cascia Hall was excited to get on the field for spring football in May. Head coach Joe Medina was equally excited to see his kids in pads, “Its good to get the kids out for spring football. I think they were more excited about it than I was, but overall they looked really good. Now they get a break and they can go be kids and that’s important.” For the Commandos one of the players looking to make another big impact this season is Conner Sherwood. The linebacker/ running back looked fresh in spring practice and will be one of the leaders coach Medina calls on this season.

Central Oklahoma Another title for the Putnam City Pirates in basketball, Carl Albert and Star Spencer are champions in football and Edmond North girls bring home the gold in soccer.

What a year in sports for teams in the Central Oklahoma area. The Carl Albert Titans made a great run to a state title in football avenging the previous years performance, while Star Spencer proved they were the top team in Class 4A. Edmond Memorial kept the volleyball tradition alive in Edmond by winning the state title in Class 6A and Clinton won their first title in volleyball by taking the Class 4A gold ball. The Guthrie boys out ran their opponents in cross country, while Santa Fe South dominated Class 4A with a state championship. It was a West side domination in basketball as Putnam City, Douglass, Millwood, Pawnee, Garber and Roff all won title in boys basketball. Not to be outdone, the Midwest City Lady Bombers won Class 6A in basketball followed by Dale and Okarche. In spring sports the Southmoore boys track team was unstoppable and Bishop McGuinness girls were Queens of the court. Bethel wins slowpitch softball, while the Edmond North boys golf team shot their way to a state championship. John Marshall was the story in Class 4A boys track as they beat the rest of the field for their state title and the Millwood boys silenced doubters and won the Class 3A title in track & field.

Dominating performances in football, baseball, golf, wrestling and swimming are just some of the stories coming from Green Country. The Union Redskins may have lost the Backyard Bowl to Jenks, but they made up for it in the title game beating their rivals by a big margin. The Broken Arrow Tigers boys cross country team ran away with a state championship and Muskogee won the Dual Wrestling title. The Claremore Zebras were solid on the mat and won a Dual title and a Team title. No one was better in the pool than the Jenks boys and girls, both winning state championships. Collinsville girls cross country were good enough to win a title in Class 5A and the Cardinals baseball team won the schools first boys championship in any sport. The Lady Tigers of Broken Arrow won another championship in fastpitch softball and Caney Valley surprised everyone by winning Class 3A. Bishop Kelley had their share of titles this year with the girls winning volleyball and soccer, while the boys won soccer and tennis. VYPE: Renzi Stone and Social Networking, Volleyball Versus Basketball, Shattuck Indians Renzi Stone, the President and CEO of Saxum Public Relations had no problem connecting with the athletes of today. Which sport is becoming more popular amongst high school girls, volleyball or basketball? It’s a question VYPE tackled this month and the response was tremendous. The Shattuck Indians held the nations longest winning streak, but this would be the season that streak would end. VYPE sat down with head coach Troy Bullard to discuss the streak, Shattuck football and the community.

In The News: Fall Sports, At Home on the Ice, Horsing Around, The Turkey Bowl Softball wrapped up another great season as Lawton MacArthur won the Class 5A state title. Mustang finished runner-up in Class 6A, while Blanchard defeated Tuttle for the Class 4A crown. The Lady Reds of Clinton won their first ever state title in volleyball, while Edmond Memorial took top honors in Class 6A. Edmond North girls won a team championship in cross country and the Guthrie boys finished two runners in the top five giving them a team title as well. Will Ryan and Anthony Stancampiano are at home on the ice. The two hockey players from Bishop McGuinness helped OKC Hockey team to a great season. Meaghan Burns loves to horse around, just ask the kids at Cheyenne High School. An annual tradition continued with a group of friends at the Turkey Bowl.

VYPE: Elite 8, Fall Sports Wrap-Up, Lincoln Christian Bulldogs Our annual Elite 8 basketball team was named. This year’s team had everything, size, speed, shooting and power. The Lady Redskins of Union finished second in Class 6A volleyball, but Bishop Kelley would go on to win the Class 5A title and their 13th volleyball title overall. Broken Arrow captured their third title in four years winning the Class 6A softball title, while Jacquelyn Skocik won the 3200-meter cross-country final for Jenks. Regan Ward of Beggs dominated Class 3A cross country and the Metro Christian boys and girls finished in second place in Class 4A. The Lincoln Christian Bulldogs were turning heads early in the season, but as we entered December, everyone knew the Bulldogs we for real.

In The News: Broken Arrow Cross Country, Olympic Dreams, Playoff Football The boys cross country team at Broken Arrow won a state championship in Class 6A finishing ahead of Union, Edmond North and Edmond Memorial in points. Pawhuska discus thrower Sarah Tolson has big dreams of making it to the Olympics. Her training, talent and drive just may take her there. The playoff picture became much clearer and teams geared up for the playoffs. Jenks and Union were on a collision course, while Bishop Kelley was keeping that number one spot. Bixby quietly made their way through the season and was looking to get another shot at a title.

C e ntral Okla h om a

Central Oklahoma named their Atheltes of the Year for 2009, Toni Young from Del City and J.T. Realmuto from Carl Albert. These two superstars helped their schools win state titles leaving a permanent mark on the record books. The talent pool has always run deep in Oklahoma City. Names like Shelden Williams, Matt Kemp and DeAngelo Alexander are familiar to locals, now they’re household names from coast to coast. The Lomega girls know how to win, just look at the gold balls that call the trophy case home. Randy Renner took a closer look at a true basketball dynasty in the Lomega Lady Raiders.

In The News: Road Trips, Blanchard Youth Football, New Years Resolutions From the Shortgrass Invitational to the Tournament of Champions, basketball teams are known for taking those long road trips in the middle of the basketball season. The Perry Maroons are wrestling royalty in Oklahoma. Danny Hodge, one of the more well-known wrestlers in the country, spent some time with Hayden Workman and Ian Fisher as they prepared for a run at a state title. Edmond Swimming is rapidly becoming the best program in the state and LP Pannell dove into the water to see what makes Edmond swimmers so good. Powerlifting has become the sport of choice for many off-season football players. Delany Scrivner from Tuttle has an inspirational comeback story for the ages.

In The News: Rugby, All-VYPE Football Team, OKC Thunder Hold Camp Rugby is gaining ground on the traditional sports in Oklahoma and the guys from Norman, Edmond and the surrounding area are proving the sport has a place amongst traditional sports in Oklahoma. VYPE U: College Football Preview, High School Signings List, Starting 11 The VYPE-U College Football Preview hit the stands in March and what a response we got from football fans. Every college in Oklahoma that plays football was covered. With stories from Robert Allen, James Hale, Bill Huddleston and Chris Harmon, this college football preview was one of the best magazines VYPE has ever printed. The high school signings list was full of talented high school players headed to the next level. From soccer to golf, baseball to field hockey, VYPE had the kids covered. One of the more controversial articles was the Starting 11 by Brad Heath. While it may have ruffled a few feathers, it was all in good fun and it got us talking about football in March, which is never a bad thing!

In The News: The University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State University and The University of Tulsa With the three big schools in the state preparing for spring football, VYPE broke down each schools offense, defense and special teams for the 2010 season. The position battles to watch, who’s making headlines and each teams depth chart heading into spring practice are just of few things we covered on each school in the VYPE-U College Football Preview.
