Salina Area Girls Soccer Player of the Month Poll: Monique Fair It’s no wonder Salina South soccer star Monique Fair is such a popular player. When you see her play you quickly realize how much she loves the game.

Fair plays center back for South and has been involved in the sport for more than 11 years.

There isn’t much she enjoys more than putting on that jersey and playing for her school.

“What I like about playing sports for Salina South is the recognition that is brought to a person. No matter how the game ends someone is always there to congratulate the player,” said Fair.

“Academics are very important to me. As a student athlete I know that in order to play the sport I love is to have good grades. When I graduate I would like to go into the study of psychology and possibly become a social worker,” said Fair. “My favorite subject in school is English because it gives me the time to be able express my ideas on a piece of paper for others to read. My favorite teacher at Salina South is Mr. Massey. He is a wonderful teacher because he tells us students that we can change the world and create a bright future for our country.”

“What I love most about my team is how we all connect with each other. Though as teammates we are all different from one another we have a special bond that makes us feel like a family,” said Fair. “My biggest influence on and off of the field is my coach, Trey Crow. He has been coaching me since I was little and he helps me improve as a person and a player.”

American Family Athlete Profile: Connor Anglin At the age of four, Connor Anglin started playing the game of baseball with an older team thanks to his parents and a little deception.

“My parents lied about my age so I could play on my brother’s seven year old team. I was able to hold my own against the bigger kids so nobody asked any questions,” said Anglin.

That started him on a path that would lead him to becoming the starting catcher for Salina High School.

I have always played catcher. My dad told me early on that it is the toughest position to play on the field.

I took the challenge and fell in love with physicality of the position,” said Anglin. “When I was four I was diagnosed with a potential brain tumor. I have always put everything I had into being the best baseball player I could be. That is what makes my senior baseball season being cancelled so hard. I had put a lot of extra work in since the end of last

Derby High School Athletic Director, Russell Baldwin, wanted Panther Stadium to reflect the passion and care he and his staff have for their studentathletes. Having experience with other turfs, Baldwin knew he wanted a proven product from a company like Hellas Construction.

“Hellas goes above and beyond to explain why they do things and to insure the safety of our students playing and competing on their fields. Hellas has an amazing product and the final presentation is just outstanding. They are coming back to install a new synthetic track after the next football season that will be black to blend in with the new turf. Then it will really be something to see,” said Baldwin.

From the design process to actual completion, Hellas worked with Derby High School to insure the field was completed to the highest of standards.

“Working with Hellas was very easy and smooth from beginning to end. Their professionalism throughout was phenomenal and we are very satisfied,” said Baldwin. “They treat you with respect. What I mean is that school districts are not experts on turf and installation no matter how many “turf” classes we have taken. They talked to us and explain everything little thing that goes with the process, not just the big things. They want you to learn exactly what they are doing so the next time becomes easier.”

McPherson Soccer Q&A with Anna Nason & Claire Hedlund VYPE: How long have you played soccer and what position do you play for McPherson High School?

Nason: I have been playing soccer for about 13-14 years now. I started playing when I was around four years old, and it has definitely become my favorite sport I have ever played. I played every position besides defense and goalie. The least you could say, I was goal hungry!

Hedlund: I have played for 11 years and I play forward.

VYPE: Did you try any other sports growing up?

Nason: I played many sports growing up; it took a lot out of my parents to keep me occupied all the time. I played basketball, volleyball, soccer, and I am a dancer.

Soccer, however, was my favorite and it happened to be the sport where I met my best friend, Claire Hedlund.

Hedlund: No.

VYPE: Be honest…did you rush out and buy a ton of toilet paper?

Nason: Honestly, I didn’t! I really didn’t know the severity of the virus until a few weeks ago. Let’s just say, we do now have a stockpile of toilet paper!

Hedlund: No.

VYPE: Before we bring this interview to an end, lets discuss some of your teammates. Give me a name for each of the following; Who is the loudest person on the bus? Who can sleep anywhere? Who is always running late? Who talks the most smack on the field? Who has the most fun

VYPE: What will you remember most about this squad?

Nason: There are many things that I will remember about his team, but the biggest will be our positivity. In just the first few weeks of practice, despite what team we were on there was always encouragement from both sides.

Hedlund: The friendship and the loyalty.

VYPE: Obviously things have been interrupted this season, so what’s next for you?

Nason: Even though my season has recently been interrupted, that won’t stop my excitement for what lies next on my path. This coming fall I will be attending Kansas State University with a major in Nutritional Sciences/Pre-Medicine. I plan on being apart of the Greek life at Kansas State and many other student organizations that will give me the chance to meet many others that have the same interests as I do.

Hedlund: I’m beginning training and working hard to soon start my college soccer season, with the help of coach Hagan.

VYPE: Tell me what your team and teammates mean to you?

Nason: To me this team was my family. I loved how much it felt like a sisterhood and no matter what the circumstance, they always had my back. Whenever I had a bad day, I knew I could go to practice and everyone would cheer me up. These girls were my sisters in sweat!

Hedlund: They are my best friends and my family.

They mean a lot to me and I wouldn’t trade them for anything.

VYPE: Away from soccer, what do you enjoy doing with your free time?

Nason: When I wasn’t playing soccer, it seemed like I was always with my friends or my family. We spent a ton of time at the lake, at the park, or simply trying to make our own fun. When you live in a small town, you

VYPE: As a student-athlete, what is your favorite subject and who is your favorite teacher?

Nason: My favorite subject ever since I was a little girl has always been science and more particularly Human Anatomy and Physiology. I have always been so fascinated by how the human body functions and other environmental factors that can affect it. My favorite teacher throughout my four years of high school has to be Mrs. Chelsey McCasland. She was my Chem I and AP Chem teacher who always lit up every room she walked into. She always carried herself so positively that it was contagious to her students. In class whenever a student of hers would be having trouble or didn’t understand a subject, she made sure to go out of her way to make that student feel confident in the material. You won’t ever find another teacher who cares so much about her students as she does. Doesn’t hurt that she’s a K-State Wildcat Grad!

Hedlund: My favorite subject is math. Favorite teacher in Cheryl Malm, because she is always understanding and is there if you need her for anything.

Who has the most fun regardless of the situation, Belle Alexander.

Belle has such a positive attitude and a happy-go-lucky spirit that everyone feeds off of very well. Natural Born Leader, this would either be myself or Kaliah Tice.

Being co-captains of the dance team together made it an easy transition to the soccer field.

VYPE: What was the name of the first soccer team you played for?

Nason: I started playing soccer in Manhattan, Kansas where I played for the local recreational team. Once my family and I moved from Manhattan to Kansas City, that is where I started playing for a competitive team called the JCFC Comets.

Hedlund: I played for the Strikers.

“I’ll say this, I want to see a kid who says bowling isn’t a sport get on the lanes and try to figure out the oil and throw the ball in the same spot every time for 36 frames,” Young said. “Then tell me it isn’t a sport so yes I’d say I’m an athlete.”

Young also played basketball and football at Salina Central, but this year he focused on just bowling for his future’s sake. He is unsure about where he will be attending college.

Young, who is one of the top bowlers in the state, recorded a score of 721 at the 5-1A Tournament in February to help the Mustangs win their first state championship. “I bowl all year round usually I do a lot of tournaments and league,” Young said.

There are many people who have helped Liles during her playing career, but one coach stands out above the rest.

“My biggest influence is my coach Ben Fetherston. He began coaching my club team in middle school and now is an assistant coach at South High. Ever since he has been my coach I have been a whole different player. He always radiates positivity during games while also giving us ways to make our game better.

To me that is super important. To be able to have fun with your coach, but also get down to business when needed,” said Liles.

He has taught two of my elective classes in the past years. He always has a positive attitude and likes to have fun and is always giving me a hard time about something that we always end up laughing about.”

To say Liles and her team love playing together would be an understatement. The amount of fight this team has in them is special to watch.

Away from soccer, Liles is intensely focused on making good grades even if it means missing out on soccer.

“I like playing for South because nobody expects us to be any good at sports being a small town public school. Being able to prove people wrong is one of my favorite things, but also the soccer culture at South is outstanding.

Both girls and boys programs have been supported greatly throughout the years. We are one big family,” said Liles.

Fourteen years ago, Alex Liles started her journey in the world of soccer, which led her to play forward for the varsity team at Salina South. Liles loves to play for South while representing the student body on the soccer field.

Student of the Month Grace Thompson Sedgewick High School Athletes push their bodies to do extraordinary things. In the case of Grace Thompson from Sedgwick High School, the three-sport athlete suffered an injury just before basketball season was set to start. The point guard was sidelined for the rest of the season.

“I tore my ACL in practice three days before our first basketball game,” said Thompson. “I had my surgery at the end of December and then I started physical therapy a couple days later.”

Advanced Physical Therapy utilized the tools and expertise at their disposal to help Thompson get back on her feet.

“I don’t necessarily have a favorite treatment,

but I’ve felt great results with the system,” said Thompson.

“I’ve also really enjoyed the people that work at Advanced Physical Therapy.

I look forward to my appointments each week.”

The volleyball, basketball and track athlete is making excellent gains thanks to the work she and the staff at APT are putting in to get Thompson back on the court and track.

“I would say the biggest improvement would be my range of motion,” said Thompson. “After

the surgery I could barely bend it and now it’s where it was before I tore it.”

Thompson plays outside hitter and libero for the volleyball team and she competes in four events for the track team; 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, shot put and discus.

Duke Hilbert of Bennington was chosen as the recipient of the KDWP Call of the Wild award for April.

Now in its third year, Maize South is one of the state’s budding trap-shooting teams. Under first-year

Hilbert began having an interest in the outdoors of Wildlife Parks & at a young age, thanks mostly to his father. “My Tourism & VYPE father was the one that introduced me to guns Magazine and the outdoors at a very young age,” Hilbert said. “I think I was 7 the first time I shot a deer.

He always made it a fun thing to do with no pressure so it was always a good bonding time for him and me.”

Besides sports, Hilbert also participates in F.F.A., S.A.F.E. and Mentor Magic at Bennington.

Next year, he plans on going to Technical School in Hays. “I will be attending North Central Kansas Tech in Hays,” Hilbert said. “I am going to get my degree in HVAC and Electrical.”

Banks is a three-sport athlete for the Trojans, competing in football, basketball and baseball. But one sport stands out the most for Banks. “Football is my favorite sport,” Banks said. “I devote most of the year to football with lifting throughout the year and camps all throughout the summer.”

As a junior last season, Banks was a solid two-way player for Southeast of Saline. As a running back, Banks ran for 969 yards and 21 touchdowns, while also racking up 106 receiving yards and two more scores. As a linebacker on defense, Banks recorded 35 tackles, 12 tackles for a loss, a sack, while also forcing two fumbles, recovered another and then returning an interception for a touchdown. He was one of the top players for the Trojans, who went 7-3 and lost in the second round of the playoffs.

Matthew Potucek from Hillsboro was selected for the North Central Kansas Hog Wild Performance for the month of April.

Potucek scored 16 points in the Trojans’ 57-51 victory over top-seeded Pratt Skyline at the 2A Tournament in Manhattan.

With the game on the line late, Potucek hit two key free throws to seal the game for Hillsboro, which finished the season 15-9.

The Trojans never led until the final seconds of the game and trailed by double-figures for most of the game.

“When we were down by that much I knew that we were playing pretty bad,” Potucek said.

“And that if we started to play better we could definitely come back and win.”

Hillsboro was down by as many as 18 points at one point in the first half and by as many as 11 points in the third quarter, but hot shooting in the second half sparked the furious comeback. The Trojans shot 63 percent for the half.

Potucek said he felt the momentum begin to shift in the second quarter when Hillsboro cut Pratt-Skyline’s lead to seven at halftime.

“I felt the momentum shift probably in the middle of the second quarter because we started to hold them,” Potucek said. “Then we shortened the lead to where we were down seven at halftime.”

Potucek, who is just a sophomore, finished the season averaging 14.2 points, 5.9 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game.

Hanover Girls Basketball

By Matt Browning The 2019-2020 basketball season was supposed to be the icing on the cake for an incredible four-year run for the Hanover girls program.

Before this year’s 1A tournament, the Wildcats had gone 99-10 over the past three years, with two state titles and another state title game appearance last season, where they fell to Central Plains.

But due to the COVID-19 outbreak, all state tournaments were cancelled after first round games.

Hanover defeated Otis-Bison 41-36 in the first round at Dodge City and then was set for a rematch with undefeated Central Plains in the semifinals.

“So when I got to the court, a couple of girls noticed how emotional I got and at that point I had to tell them, that no matter how this game goes, our season would be coming to a conclusion.

“With six seniors on the team it hit them hard for about two minutes.

Then like our girls always do they battle through it, overcame a halftime deficit and won a tough game against a good Otis-Bison team.”

Two seniors, Tianna Lohse and Cadlee Stallbaumer, who have played varsity since they were freshmen, led the Wildcats.

Lohse, who was a first team VYPE all-state player, led Hanover in scoring at 11.7 points per game, while Stallbaumer, a second team VYPE all-state player, was second in scoring at 11.1 points per game.

While the Wildcats have had successful

seasons over the past three years, Biekmann, in his opinion, said this year was one of the most successful in the school’s history.

“It is one of Hanover’s best seasons,” Biekmann said. “I believe that even though we didn’t get to the game we wanted (against Central Plains) that the season was a great success.

“(We won) another TVL League Championship and only one loss on the resume, which we ended up revenging later in the season against Frankfort.”

DRIVE TO ZERO STUDENT OF THE MONTH Terin Rundus, Concordia Concordia High School’s Terin Rundus first got involved with the SAFE program two years ago when the student council saw a need at their school.

“The program SAFE stands for Seat Belts are For Everyone, and the goal of it is to reduce vehicle-related injuries and fatalities by encouraging seat belt use and educating students,” said Rundus.

“Concordia High School was faced with the stark reality that change was needed to facilitate improved safety and compliance of seatbelt laws. Two years ago, our student council advisor, Dustin Bender, applied to have the program at our school.

Our application was accepted and student council members have been conducting it.”

“I also participate in volleyball, basketball, and track & field,” said Rundus.

Rundus said the program has been very rewarding in many ways. From reaching new drivers to bringing awareness to the laws and rules of the road, she has enjoyed the opportunity to help her fellow students.

“One of the most rewarding aspects of being a part of SAFE is seeing the improvement of students and staff wearing their seatbelts. We conduct three sections of observations, and each section consists of two consecutive days. As the observations progress, more people wear their seatbelts and are less distracted,” said Rundus.

“After graduating from high school, I plan to attend Kansas State University and study in either the College of Health and Human Sciences or the College of Business,” said Rundus.

Before her time has come to an end at Concordia, Rundus offers this sound advice to other students who may want to participate in SAFE. “It is a beneficial program that encourages and educates people to practice vehicle safety. It helps track progress, through seatbelt use, over the span of a school year.

There are also many incentives that can be received through the program such as prizes, speakers, and mock wrecks. For example, mock wrecks are eye opening for many students and their understanding of why it is so important to be buckled. By participating in this program, students can take comfort in knowing that they are helping to protect their family and friends.”

Andover High School Boys Basketball

By Matt Browning The Andover boys basketball team was chosen as the Visit Wichita Team of the Month for April.

The Trojans finished their season with a record of 23-0 and advanced to the 5A semifinals before the Kansas State High School Activities Association canceled the remainder of the tournament due to COVID-19.

When head coach Martin Shetlar had to tell his team about the season abruptly coming to an end, it was an especially emotional moment.

“We had finished practiced on that Thursday

and were prepared to play Kapaun the next day,” Shetlar said. “We were all excited and confident about our chances for the next two days of the tournament. That evening when we got the news we were in a little bit of shock and disbelief. I’m not sure we knew how to react.

Our seniors decided to get our team together the next morning and talk about the situation.”

Andover was led by Jack Johnson, who was named to multiple all-state teams, in scoring at 19.1 points per game and Harper Jonas was second in scoring at 15.6 points per game and led the Trojans in rebounding with 6.6 rebounds per game.

Shetlar said what made this team so special was that every player knew his role and embraced it.

“This team was very special,” Shetlar said.

“They refused to lose. No matter what the situation was in the game they always expected to win.”

The Trojans’ season was full of many accomplishments including winning their league, their midseason tournament and ultimately winning their sub-state to qualify for the state tournament as the No. 1 seed.

First Bank Leadership Profile: Elizabeth Schmucker Goessel High School Future senior and current point guard Elizabeth Schmucker is this month’s First Bank Leadership Profile.

As a point guard, you are in command of the floor. For Schmucker, taking on that role was a fun one, even though the season did not end as planned.

“I enjoyed the basketball season very much! Even though some of the outcomes of the games did not go in our favor, we always came ready to play and give it our best shot. What I think I improved the most from last to this year was finding ways to score and getting better passes to my teammates,” said Schmucker. “We were a small group this year and I really felt like that helped me connect better with the incoming freshman and just the team as a whole. I love how supportive and encouraging my teammates are. They always came in ready to work hard everyday and never complained.”

Also a track and volleyball athlete, Schmucker, or “Lizzie” as her friends call her, does find time for activities outside or an opportunity to play with her dogs. She also enjoys photography and drawing.

The Alley Bowler of the Month: Bradley Gawith Salina Central’s Bradley Gawith is this month Alley Bowler of the Month. Gawith started bowling several years ago when a friend showed him the ropes. “I started bowling when I was 14 and my friend and teammate, Chase, influenced and showed me how to bowl,” said Gawith.

Now a member of the bowling team at Central, Gawith believes the team is unstoppable when they want to be. “When we all work as a team we are unstoppable. Like this year we had amazing teamwork and we won state with it,” said Gawith.

Winning a state title will always be a great memory for Gawith and his teammates, but sometimes it’s the little things that stand out. “Winning state was for sure my best memory, or maybe eating at CiCi’s Pizza with the team, they have amazing pizza,” said Gawith.

What’s in store for his future? Gawith is hoping to continue bowling at the next level. “Hopefully bowl for a college. Continue with bowling and my career pathway,” said Gawith.

Salina Imaging recognizes students that are exhibiting a positive image that is defined as, “The general impression that a person, organization, or product presents to the public.

Jackson Hayes - Salina South Salina South student-athlete Jackson Hayes has quickly made a name for himself as an allaround solid athlete on the basketball court and the football field. Hayes is the shooting guard for the varsity team, but would not be opposed to playing the paint.

“I have been playing basketball for as long I can remember, ever since I could figure out how to dribble a ball I was out there shooting baskets. I play shooting guard for my team, but I wish my coach would play me at post once in a while,” said Hayes.

Playing for Salina South brings out his passion for both games thanks to the fans and the atmosphere.

“Playing for Salina South is unlike any other team, the atmosphere around practices and games is the best around. We get serious when we need to be but we’re always having fun,” said Hayes. “I love the energy about my team and teammates the most. We can turn the smallest things into something great and it’s never a dull moment with this group of guys.”

Hayes has followed that mantra throughout his high school career. “I’ve always been raised to put my academics first, my grades are my top priority as I know they will be the key to my future. I plan on attending Kansas State University after I graduate and getting my bachelors degree in criminal justice,” said Hayes. “When school was still in session my favorite class was psychology, studying individuals emotions and brain functions are super interesting. I hope in the future I can use that information to help me with whatever I end up doing as a career. My favorite teacher is hands down Mr. Stover, he’s a great guy who thoroughly cares about his students grades while also keeping it fun, and he never fails a wave check.”

He is also a member of STUCO and serves as junior class secretary. “I am thankful for the opportunity to be apart of such a great group of people. I would like to say thank you to Mrs. Chamberlain who is our student council leader because she is always working hard to make sure that Salina South is a great place to be,” said Hayes.

Hayes pointed to several people who have played major roles in getting him this far in life.

From coaches to grandparents, they all have influenced him in big ways.

Jackson Hayes “My biggest influence on the field is Herman Hill. If there is one thing he has taught me as a teammate it’s to never give up, he’s shown a great amount of resilience and courage when we play, and he can always motivate his team to be better. When practices were rough we could all count on Herman to push us through it and to get better as a unit,” said Hayes. “My biggest influence off the field is my grandma mother. She’s fought and won numerous battles with cancer, and through the whole journey she never once stopped caring for others. My grandma Jan is the strongest person I’ve ever met, I hope that one day I can be like her.”

Salina Chamber Team of the Month: Goddard Baseball

By Matt Browning The Goddard baseball team is the focus of this month’s Salina Chamber Team of the Month for April.

Last season, the Lions went 16-6 and lost in the regional final. They had several key players back this season, but due to COVID-19, KSHSAA cancelled the spring sports season.

“In my gut, knowing KSHSAA had already stopped the basketball tournaments, I was not surprised by our Governor’s announcement,” first-year coach Jim Foltz said.

“What I wanted to hear is the delay/ postponement of school and activities, instead, the spring was going to change drastically and suddenly for thousands of students and their families.”

Being in his first year, Foltz was taken

aback by how involved his players were last summer when they reached out for workouts. He thinks that would have translated to success this spring.

I was so taken by their maturity and desire to get to the next level,” Foltz said. “I had watched a few games and knew the talent, but the overall quality of young men they have shown in this brief time is so encouraging.

“While they will always wonder the “what if’s”, I am in firm belief each of these seniors will participate in collegiate athletics next year, embattling an attitude that leaves no doubt to what they could have accomplished.”

Cole Gordon Foltz also said his program will be even better once games can be played again.

“We will come out of this crisis thirsting to challenge ourselves, as everyone has the same setback,” Foltz said. “Those who work diligently when the chances present themselves will be ahead.”

A fractured scaphoid 12 months ago in his left wrist ended Brandon’s football and wrestling season. Originally thought to be OK to heal on its own, the fracture hadn’t improved by the time 2019 started. Brandon had to have surgery, and Byron Grauerholz at Salina Ortho performed the successful surgery on Jan. 24. It went so well that Brandon was able to play baseball for the Vikings in the spring. “It felt normal after awhile,” Brandon says. “I didn’t have to do rehab or anything, but I had to work on my mobility in the wrist, and how to swing a bat again.” A few follow-up visits ensured the bone had healed properly, and Brandon said he was grateful to Dr. Cobb Kaylee Cooper Kadyn Grauerholz and the staff at Salina Ortho for helping him get Salina South Salina Central back on the field.
