Student of the Month Caden Croomes North High School By Matt Browning Caden Croomes of North was chosen as the Advanced Physical Therapy Athlete of the Month for March. Croomes, who is a football player for the Redskins, had surgery to repair his torn ACL and lateral meniscus. Croomes injured his knee in a game last season against East. “The part of therapy that helped the most was quad sets while straightening, because it targeted the hardest part of

therapy for me which was straightening and helped me build my quad muscle back up,” Croomes said.

their patients getting better.”

Advanced PT was especially impressive to Croomes because they did whatever it took for him to get back to 100 percent.

Croomes not only participates in football at North, but also runs the 100-meter, 200 meter, hurdles and is part of the 4x100 relay team.

“The staff at Advanced PT is amazing, because they are willing to do everything in their power to make sure you get better, and if you work really hard sometimes, they give a little reward,” Croomes said. “They all work together as well, if one therapist needs help they work together as a team, whether or not it is their patient or not. I recommend anyone who needs physical therapy to go to Advanced, because they truly care about

“I hope to get a track and field scholarship in college and to then go to medical school afterwards to become a cardiothoracic surgeon,” Croomes said.

ILIOPSOAS MUSCLE STRAIN What is this strange muscle and where is it? The iliopsoas muscle is joining of the iliacus and the psoas muscles. The two muscles are separate in the abdomen, but usually merge in the proximal one third of the thigh. This joined muscle connects to the femur at the lesser trochanter via the iliopsoas tendon and acts as the strongest flexor of the group of hip flexors. Aimi Orton, PTA The hip flexors are responsible for moving the knee towards the chest during activity. An iliopsoas strain occurs when one or more of these hip flexor muscles become either stretched or torn. An iliopsoas strain is most commonly caused by sudden movements such as sprinting, kicking and changing direction while running. Other factors which can contribute to a strain within the hip flexor muscle group include muscle weakness and tightness, inappropriate training, not warming up correctly, joint stiffness, poor biomechanics, decreased fitness and poor core stability. When one sustains an iliopsoas strain, they might feel a sudden pulling or sharp sensation in in the front of the hip or in the groin region. They might feel this painful sensation when going from a sitting/standing position, going up the stairs, walking for long periods of time, sitting for long periods of time, trying to run after the injury, etc. There might be some tenderness in the area, swelling or bruising as well. Initially, rest is the first step following the injury, allowing the body to through the inflammatory phase of the healing process and for that initial swelling to calm down before seeking any

PT treatment. Applying ice for 15-20 min to the area a few times a day is a great way to help calm down the pain and swelling. Luckily, physical therapy is an excellent avenue to treat an iliopsoas muscle strain! Our therapists at Advanced Physical Therapy offer a variety of ways to help assess and treat your injury to get you back to your normal functional abilities. Some modalities that would be beneficial to an iliopsoas strain would be myofascial tissue release, dry-needling, joint mobilization, ultrasound and E-STIM which are all available at Advanced Physical Therapy clinics! After your PT builds an exercise program that is catered to your individual goals and needs, they will build a time frame on how long you will need to be in physical therapy; depending on the severity of the injury, comorbidities, etc. After you complete your PT and your goals are met, our PT’s at APT do an excellent job at providing you with the tools you need to ensure that you stay healthy and prevent this injury from happening in the future. If you or someone you know has sustained an iliopsoas strain, have your doctor send a referral to one of our many APT locations and let us help you today! ALL SEASONS LETTERMAN OF THE MONTH

South Haven’s Sydney Bacon: Letterman of the Month By Matt Browning Sydney Bacon of South Haven was chosen as the All Seasons Letterman of the Month for March. Bacon competes in volleyball, basketball and track and field at South Haven.

Sydney Bacon

“Being nominated for this award is an honor and I am grateful to have the opportunity to represent my school and community,” Bacon said.

All spring sports were canceled last spring because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but Bacon would not have been able to compete anyways as she tore her ACL during basketball in February. She was not able to play volleyball this year, either. Her injury gave her new outlook on being able to compete in high school athletics. “The recovery for ACL reconstruction was difficult but gave me a new appreciation for the opportunity to compete in athletics,” Bacon said.

Bacon was released from her injury just in time for basketball season and more importantly for track, where she has lofty aspirations.

“I am most excited for the upcoming track season,” Bacon said. “I have ambitions of qualifying for the state track meet in May. My events include the 100, 200, 400, and 4x100.”

Nelson said her spiritual life is important to her in her day-to-day life.

“I have been a part of FCA since my 6th grade year, so three years now,” Nelson said. “I think that it is very important to incorporate your religion into your everyday life and FCA is a great way to do that.”

Knowing there is a higher power than can push her through difficult and challenging times, Nelson embraces every moment that is thrown her way.

“My faith gives me strength at the end of the day that a higher power is in control and all things happen for my highest good whether they seem bad or good in the moment,” Nelson said. Basketball and soccer are the sports Nelson plays, but soccer is her favorite for two particular reasons. “Soccer has been my favorite sport for as long as I can remember,” Nelson said. “I think this is because it takes a lot of teamwork and endurance.”

By Matt Browning Wyatt Wright of Remington was chosen for the Hog Wild Performance of the Month for March. Wright has been the top-ranked wrestler in the 120-pound weight class in Class 3-1A for most of the season. “I have been practicing every day this season at 100 percent to make sure I will have no regrets and no excuses at the end of the year, considering this is my last year in high school,” Wright said. Wright said being ranked No. 1 has made the season more challenging in that all of his opponents have been chasing him down. “It most definitely has a lot of pressure being ranked No. 1, just because it feels as if I have a big target on my back,” Wright said. “Then having the thought of everyone training harder, trying to get me out of the first place spot.” There is one area of Wright’s technique that he has been trying to perfect this season in order for him to achieve the ultimate goal of winning a state championship. “The one area I have been targeting or say perfecting, is my shot,” Wright said. “I've spent a lot of time perfecting this, making sure I'm getting close enough and committing. I find that the hardest, just committing.” Wright loves to travel and see the country, so once he graduates he wants to start a career as a lineman.

US MARINES SPOTLIGHT

Conway Springs’ Lucy Boyles: U.S. Marines Spotlight It was a proud moment for Lucy Boyles of Conway Springs High School when Marine Corps Captain Donlon entered her school to present her with a four-year NROTC full-ride scholarship. Month’s earlier the senior has applied for the NROTC Marine Option Scholarship online. As a studentathlete at Conway Spring, Boyles is used to competing. She is a member of the tennis, track and powerlifting teams while participating in band,

Scholar’s Bowl, Student Council, National Honor Society and serves as the president of the 4-H Club. Living and working on the family farm raising Boer goats and brome hay has kept her busy. But Boyles wanted something more and she found it in the Marines.

The process started with an online application which included the necessary transcripts and recommendations Boyles needed

Lucy Boyles to get past the first phase.

“I’ve wanted to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and participate in the NROTC program with the Marine option,” said Boyles. “I want to major in Forensic Science.”

Once the application was accepted, Boyles traveled to Oklahoma City where she could do the physical fitness portion of the application. She had to do pullups, sit ups and run three miles, all of which were timed. Then she had to do an interview. Once that portion was complete the candidates for the scholarship were reviewed taking all of the applicants in for consideration.

ATHLETE OF THE MONTH Dawson Archibald Andover eCademy By Matt Browning Dawson Archibald of the Andover eCademy was chosen as the Shelter Insurance Athlete of the Month for March. Archibald is a highly accomplished equestrian and recently was named the Triple Crown champion. “It was a tremendous honor,” Archibald said. “I was so proud to share it with my family, trainers, and my horse, Cash. Winning the Triple Crown was my biggest dream and when it came true I felt as if I was on cloud nine.” Archibald has been in love with horses since her grandmother signed her up for riding lessons when she was six years old. Archibald started with Cheryl Manahan at Wichita Riding Academy and now trains with Todd Miles of Milestone Stables out of Tennessee.

While equestrian is not as mainstream as most other sports, the amount of time, commitment and training is grueling. “Equestrian sports take a huge amount of time, mental power, physical strength and hours upon hours of practice,” Archibald said. “It is a true test of teamwork and perseverance. You must have an incredible drive to be able to wake up every day and push just like with every sport.”

Archibald plans to go to college online so that she can remain in the horse industry. Her dream job would be teaching equestrian.

1ST IMPRESSIONS ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

1st Impressions Athlete of the Month: Bubba Wright Wrestling is known as one of, if not the toughest sport to compete in. Kapaun Mount Carmel High School’s Bubba Wright is as tough as they come. Wright is a junior this year and is one of the KMC hopefuls to take home another state championship.

Bubba Wright

Wright got his start in wrestling at a very young age. Since that time, Wright has recorded many wins and plenty of tournament titles.

“I started wrestling when I was five years old,” said Wright. “I am currently a junior in high school and I am wrestling at 120-pounds.”

His expectations for himself are always high. Finishing at the top of the podium is always the goal. Through all of the tournaments and duals, Wright has made plenty of great memories with his teammates at Kapaun. “My expectations are to win state,” said Wright. “I like that my team and teammates are so close. My freshman year we lost in a dual against Bishop Carroll, so we had to win the City League Tournament to tie as City League champs and we ended up destroying them as a team in the City League Tournament, so we won.” Wright has a goal in mind, which is to wrestle at the collegiate level. If his past history of meeting his goals is any indication, you should expect to see Wright competing at the next level upon graduating from Kapaun Mount Carmel.

“You only have one shot at a great first impression!”

“Campus has great teachers, a great atmosphere and our pool is the best in our division,” Chadd said. The goals for Chadd this season are to place at state again and then set a school record, which he also did last season. “The COVID-19 restrictions got me off to a slow start,” Chadd said. “But I have gotten up to where I wanted to be and plan on finishing the season strong.” Aside from swimming, Chadd also participates in band and National Honor Society at Campus. BASEBALL PLAYERS TO WATCH

Baseball Players to Watch WICHITA AREA PLAYERS TO WATCH Hunter Seier – Mulvane Hunter Seier played every game his freshman year at shortstop and was outstanding. Bradley is going to be our ace once again on the mound this year and will hit at one of the top three spots of our lineup. Will hold down the shortstop position when he’s not on the mound. Javon Miller – Haven

Her future plans include attending college with the ultimate goal of being accepted into medical school.

Hayley is the two-time AVCTL IV cross country champion and has placed both of her years in high school at the state cross country meet. This past fall she finished 3rd in 4A. After missing her freshmen year due to the canceled season, she is ready to compete on the track this spring. Hayley is a versatile athlete who could compete in a variety of races ranging from the 400-3200.

Zach is a versatile runner who should be very competitive in the 400, 800, and 1600. During the 2019 State track meet, as the 2nd leg, Zach took the baton in 15th place and handed off in 1st during the 4X800 relay. The relay finished in 2nd. In 2020 Zach finished 3rd at the AVCTL IV cross country meet leading Clearwater to backto-back league titles. In 2019 Zach was AVCTL IV cross country runner-up and placed 15th at the 4A state cross country meet. Paul Sevart – Campus

DRIVE TO ZERO

STUDENT OF THE MONTH Brynne Noland, Clearwater High School Brynne Noland of Clearwater High School first joined the SAFE program, she was only a freshman. The importance of the program is what drew Noland to the club and helping her peers stay safe while driving has been a rewarding experience. “I have always put on my seatbelt from the moment I got my first car. It blows my mind how many people don’t do that seeing as how many crashes there are. I feel it’s important because you don’t ever anticipate a crash and you should always be safe and prepared,” said Noland. “I love all of the little things we do for the program like going to the younger schools and teaching them how to be safe.” As a member of the program, Noland has helped during many activities from setting up events to spreading the word to her peers. “My responsibilities include helping make a calendar for our events, and letting my other members and peers know when and what to attend,” said Noland.

“I’ve played volleyball all four years and track all four years of school. I’m also in C- Club,” said Noland.

“After Clearwater High School, I am attending Neosho County Community College to play volleyball and get an associate’s degree in business,” said Noland. The senior said anyone joining the SAFE program as a club they would like to participate in, to remember the goal of convincing your classmates to always wear your seatbelt and to have fun while doing it. “I would say that it’s really fun. And I wish more people could be on the safe board,” said Noland. In her free time Noland enjoys coaching her little sister’s volleyball team. “I also love to bake for my family and friends,” said Noland. The SAFE program is a teen-run, peer-topeer program focusing on increasing teen restraint compliance through education, positive rewards and enforcement. It is designed to bring awareness to the importance of wearing a seatbelt, therefore reducing the number of motor vehicle-related injuries and fatalities among Kansas teens.

JOMA Bowler of the Month: Brandon Bonta By Matt Browning Brandon Bonta of Northwest was chosen as the JOMA Bowler of the Month for March. Bonta is one of the top bowlers in the state this season.

“It means a lot to be chosen for the Bowler of the Month for March,” Bonta said. “Knowing that there are a lot of good high school bowlers in the area I am honored to be chosen.” Last season, Bonta rolled a 763 at the 5-1A tournament, which was good for second place. He finished three pins behind first. Already this season, Bonta is feeling good about where his game is.

Brandon Bonta

“I am feeling really confident about my game right now,” Bonta “I am throwing the ball really well.”

“I bowled really well at state last year finishing second, all I need to do is stay patient and throw the best shots I can.”

One of the main goals for Bonta this season is to lead the Grizzlies to the state tournament, which is something they did not do last season. “I would like our team to be at state this year, last year we did not make it out of regionals so this year we are going to change that,” Bonta said. “It is never fun going to state without your teammates.”

“It is spectacular and people love to walk barefooted on it. It’s the best turf that I have ever seen,” said Marty Miller, Director of Botanical Gardens.

“I can tell you it’s the coolest stuff I have ever seen. ICT Cheer Legacy Team of the Month: Andover High School

22

Head coach Kristina Endicott has called Andover High School home for a total of seven years, coaching the cheer squad with co-head coach Jessica Vandine.

“Jessica Vandine coached gymnastics for five years and has been judging competitive gymnastic meets for five years. Fun fact, we cheered together at Wichita State, so we go way back,” said Endicott.

Endicott said the eight seniors on the team helped set the example by being flexible while bringing leadership to the team.

“We have enjoyed seeing the positivity and hard work that each girl puts in. We have tried to create an environment where each team member feels valued and is encouraged to do their best and try new things. We love seeing the team build each other up and striving to improve their skills,” said Endicott. “We are proud of all the flexibility, positivity, and always improving our skills. It has been a tough year, but the girls are willing to step into different roles and try new things in order to help their team. We push them to be their best selves and when we challenge them to give us more, they rise up.” That flexibility was important as the coaching staff dealt with the problems of competing during a pandemic.

“One major challenge we have faced is trying to work on a routine or build stunt groups while having people in and out of quarantine. The team has really adapted well to the challenges we faced with masks and social distancing, and we just make the best of the situation,” said Endicott. “Luckily, we were able to still stunt this year as that is a huge part of cheer for us, and we have so much talent, so we are grateful we are able to show those skills and hard work.”

Trent is a senior this year. He missed last year due to COVID-19, like everyone else. As a freshman he shot a 76 at 4A State at Emporia, which placed him in a tie for 16th. His freshman year he medaled in seven of the eight regular season tourneys of which two he placed 2nd overall and one he placed 3rd overall. As a sophomore he medaled in six of the seven regular season tourneys. He won the Derby Invitational and had two 3rd place finishes. He did miss going to 5A State his sophomore year by one stroke. Trent has been a relentless when it comes to practicing golf. I am expecting a great season from Trent.

Bishop Carroll’s Mikey Brand: Spangles Athlete of the Month By Matt Browning Mikey Brand of Bishop Carroll was chosen as the Spangles Up and Coming Athlete of the Month for March.

Brand, who is a freshman, plays some varsity minutes for the Eagles and will be an integral part of their team next season. “Mikey has emerged as someone from the younger classes who can come in and compete for a starting

spot next year as a sophomore,” said Bishop Carroll coach Mike Dominick. “He has a maturity and calmness in his game that belies his youth.”

Brand only averages a point on Carroll’s varsity team, but he has regularly been one of the leading scorers on the sub-varsity levels, which bodes well for next season and beyond. “He is typically the leading scorer at the lower levels. He also rebounds well for his age and size,” Dominick

Mikey Brand said. “(He is) a very humble, respectful young man. I am looking forward to see what kind of player he can become in the next few years.” The Eagles won their midseason tournament at Dodge City.

SOFTBALL PLAYERS TO WATCH

Wichita Area Softball Players to Watch SOFTBALL PLAYERS TO WATCH Hadley Colquhoun – Arkansas City Hadley has been a varsity pitcher since her freshman year. Her freshman year, she helped the Bulldogs reach the state tournament. She has a good mixture of pitches that throws batters off track. She is going to be one of the leaders of the team this year. Caiya Stucky – Northwest

Caiya is our only junior and had a great freshmen year. She can play 1B, P, and OF. She will be relied upon heavily this season for leadership with an extremely young team. Sophie Martins – Campus

Sophie Martins is a 1st team All-AVCTL 2nd baseman. She also can play outfield and pitches. She has a chance to lead the league in homeruns this season and has a chance to be player of the year. Sophie is a great player and even better teammate. Kendal LeGrand – Goddard

Senior pitcher. 2nd Team All-State sophomore year. Tess Eubank – Andover

Tess Eubank is a right-handed pitcher who ended the 2019 season with 125 strike outs and 100 her freshmen year. She will be a fourth-year starter. She has power at the plate, and amazing movement with her pitches. Her spin makes her a huge threat in our league, in my opinion one of the toughest pitchers to prepare for because she has the ability to make the ball move anywhere. Kylie Forney – Andover

30

Kylie Forney is our biggest offensive threat, and she has only gotten stronger and better since her freshmen year, so we have high expectations for her this year. I am very impressed with her every time I see her. The sky is truly the limit with her. I think she can play at any level and if she wants. She is hard working, a great leader, and wants to be her best at everything she does. Alex Schreiner – Kingman

Alex is a star offensively and defensively. She hit .562 as a freshman in 2019 and led our team in most offensive categories including batting average, OBP, hits, doubles, HRs, RBIs. She is committed to play softball next year at Butler Community College. Emma Garrison – Central of Burden

She is one of the most coach able kids I have ever coached. She is a player’s player and a coach’s dream. Emma leads the way in the school also. Kate Pausen – Andover Central

Kate is a worker and a lover of the game. She is a great outfielder that has speed and great tracking ability. She was great for us offensively and lead the team in home runs. She knows the game well and is always wanting to get better. She plays in the summer and the fall and has not yet decided on the school, yet she will be attending to play softball.
