Student of the Month Macey Pond South Haven High School South Haven High School’s Macey Pond has certainly been through a lot since suffering an injury to her left leg during the third basketball game of the year in 2019. A simple layup turned into months of rehab after surgery just two weeks later.

“I’ve been working on getting back on the court for about nine and half months. I got hurt on the 13th of December, I had surgery two weeks later on the 27th, and I just got released on the 9th of October. Even though I’ve been released, there is plenty of work to do until basketball season so I can be at my full potential for my team,” said Pond.

With support from her mother and the staff at APT, Pond’s recovery is near complete and she’s working hard every day to be 100 percent before the start of the season.

“From the day I got hurt until this point, she’s been so positive through everything. From getting my leg straight for the first time to getting released, my accomplishments were out victories. I’m looking forward to the day that I get to see her in the stands cheering for me again,” said Pond.

“My recovery has been rough with a lot of bumps in the road. I struggled with getting my inner quad back but everyone at APT continuously supported me. Some days we would have sessions just on quad work and they were really good at finding new exercises to do so it wasn’t getting boring for me.”

Physical therapy can be difficult, but the staff at APT have worked hard to find ways to breakthrough recovery roadblocks that hindered Pond.

The support Pond has received from friends, family and teammates has meant the world to her.

Returning to the court will be the payoff for all of the hard work and support she’s received.

“I can’t even begin to explain how amazing APT was. Even through all of the bad news, I could always count on them to cheer me up. They always pushed me to my threshold. Every time I had appointments, they always greeted me with

IMPORTANCE OF PROPER LIFTING TECHNIQUE

light weight, some heavy. What you are also almost guaranteed to see is someone lifting weights incorrectly.

Whether you’re a weekend warrior, full time athlete, or someone who goes to the gym regularly, proper lifting technique is essential for avoiding injury.

Improper lifting technique leads to compensatory motions throughout the body leading to increased injury risk, especially with lifts that involve the entire body such as squat, clean, and deadlift. Different compensations lead to increased risk for back, knee, hip, and shoulder injuries that will hinder your performance and may even force you to stop exercising for a period of time.

In order to determine if you are ready to starting lifting weights, or increasing the amount of weight you are lifting, it is important to make sure you can properly perform each lift using your body weight first. It is very important to understand that if you can’t perform the movement properly without weight, you shouldn’t be performing it with weight.

So your next question may be, “how do I know if I am lifitng correctly or ready to advance my exercises?”

Large School DB Poll Winner: Dalton Caraway - Goddard

By Matt Browning Dalton Caraway from Goddard was voted as the Wichita Large Schools Preseason Defensive Back of the Year.

Caraway received over 6,000 votes, which was good for 46 percent of the overall votes. “It’s nice to be recognized as a top player even after the season we had last year,� Caraway said. “The other guys nominated are all very good football players and I’m glad to be nominated with them.�

Last season, Caraway was a second team all-league selection where he

recorded 49 tackles, three interceptions and a fumble recovery.

This season, Caraway is excited about the direction of the Lions, who are ranked in VYPE’s Wichita Large Schools Power Rankings.

“Our season has been solid so far and with my strong team I feel we can only get better,� Caraway said. “Individually I’m working on being the best player I can be and helping my team be successful.�

The hope for Caraway after high school is to play football somewhere.

FCA Athlete of the Month: Callie Snowbarger

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes of the Month is Callie Snowbarger, a junior at Derby High School. Snowbarger plays outside and right side for the JV volleyball team and has helped lead the team to a 13-3 record this season.

For Callie her involvement at FCA started at an early age thanks to her family,

“I started going to camp when I was seven, then I was a junior intern during my freshman year and I started going to all the FCA camps in sixth grade.

My aunt, Kelly, runs all the FCA events so she got me really involved with it at an early age and I just really enjoyed it and I’ve just stuck with it,� said Snowbarger.

She says the enjoyment she gets from FCA has to do with her friends and always learning something different.

“I like going to FCA a lot because I can bring my non-Christian friends and they are surrounded by people who love God just as much as I do and I just always learn new things about God when I go,� said Snowbarger, “It’s great since we’re all athletes we all get busy, so it helps us refocus on God as opposed to focusing on our sport or school.�

All Seasons Letterman of the Month: Trey Strnad Caldwell High School The All-Seasons Letterman of the Month is Trey Strnad a senior football player at Caldwell High School. Strnad starts at both tight end and defensive end and has helped lead Caldwell to a 4-0 record so far.

“I think each week we’re getting better and better, we haven’t started games the way we wanted, but we’ve played really well in the second half and kicked it up in each game,” said Strnad.

Despite the team’s hot start Trey is still demanding more from himself.

“I think I’ve been pretty passive honestly,” said Strnad, “I haven’t taken total control on both sides of the ball, but I’m looking to change that soon and play better.”

As a senior Strnad has taken on more of a leadership role this season and has taken that responsibility seriously.

“I just try to go out there and set the tone every day, you have to go out and give 100 percent every day or else we won’t reach our goals, also a big thing is just holding people accountable and keeping the standards high,” said Strnad.

Trey and his Caldwell teammates set a school record last year, winning two playoff games. He says their goal is to make a statement with another deep run this year.

The Grizzlies have three sets of sisters that play major roles: Brailee and Daetyn Bogle, Caiya and Camdyn Stucky and Jaicee and Jacqueline Corcoran.

There is a special bond on the team, one that cannot be replicated.

“I think it is definitely an advantage having three sets of sisters on the team,” Jaicee Corcoran said. “The bond between all of our teammates is strong already and now we are lucky to say that we have the sisterly bond that adds another dimension to our game play.

This season is already very special because we weren’t supposed to have one due to COVID and as much as I wanted to play with this talented group of girls, this would be my only year to play with my little sister because I’m a senior and she is a freshman.”

Jacqueline Corcoran added that the memories they are able to make would last a lifetime, especially since there were so many unknowns just one month ago.

This year being the only year that I could play with my sister is something we have both known for a long time,” Jacqueline said. “So when our season was called off it was very hard on us.”

Brailee Bogle said the season would not be any less important if she weren’t playing with her sister, but certainly it would not feel the same.

“I definitely think the season would be so different considering I’ve always had her by my

side,” Brailee said. “The season wouldn’t mean any less to me but it would be whole different feeling.”

Daetyn Bogle feels like the Grizzlies have a significant advantage over other teams because each set of sisters understands how their sibling wants and knows how to play.

“I think it is a huge advantage to be able to play with a sister because we can push each other in ways that another teammate could not,” Daetyn said.

“Having sisters playing together gives our team a tremendous amount of chemistry and a natural connection that is different than any other team.”

Camdyn Stucky said the chemistry she has with her sister is not something that just happened overnight.

“Having my sister on the team is a complete game changer,” Camdyn said.

“Our chemistry is one that took a lifetime to create, so using it on the volleyball court makes the biggest difference.”

It is not always smooth sailing for the sisters, as there is the typical

arguing and disagreements. But Caiya Stucky said it is all worth it in the long run.

It’s not pretty all of the time,” Caiya said. “But the bickering is all worth it when you get to walk on and off of the court together.”

By Matt Browning Kenny Fehrman of Wellington was voted as the Wichita Large Schools Preseason Defensive Lineman Player of the Year.

Fehrman received over 23,000 votes, which was 44 percent of the overall vote.

At this time Fehrman hopes to get into either athletic trainer or personal training as a career.

This season, Fehrman has had to overcome injury (he missed two games) but he is back now and hoping to help the Crusaders make a strong push towards the playoffs. “I was out two games due to injury so it felt great to be back,” Fehrman said. “My team as a whole is struggling a bit but I think things will click when it matters most.”

Darby Roper from Haven was chosen as the Hog Wild Performance of the Month for October. Roper finished with 363 all-purpose yards and five touchdowns in the Wildcats 46-43 win over Larned. He also recorded 8.5 tackles and an interception.

“I don’t really consider myself more of an offensive or defensive player,” Roper said. “Whatever side of the ball I’m on during the game is where I feel I should be. I love playing both ways.”

Roper feels like his talents make him one of the best players in the area, but he also recognizes that his teammates contribute significantly to his production.

“There are 11 guys out there that have to make things work,” Roper said. “Some of the other players that are at the top of our area are on my team, so to say I do any of this alone is just not true.”

At this time, Roper would like to play sports in college, but he is not sure which one or where that might be.

“My plans are undecided right now,” Roper said. “I’m just hoping to get looked at for football, basketball, or baseball. Whatever works best for me, really. I’m just trying to keep working and hopefully turn some heads.”

Fehrman was a second team all-league defensive lineman last season. “I’m very honored to have been voted for this award,” Fehrman said. “It means a lot to me that people recognize my talent and enjoy watching me play the game I love.”

U.S. Marines Spotlight: Brianna Donaldson - Rose Hill For today’s student-athlete, the uncertainty of COVID-19 keeps them on edge when it comes to staying in school and participating in sports. Very few of these students are contemplating what it will mean to one day be called a United States Marine. Rose Hill cheerleader Brianna Donaldson is one of those student-athletes with more on her mind than school and sports.

“I decided to join the Marine Corps because I felt like God was calling

me to serve our country and on top of that being bullied for my weight, it pushed me to lose weight and helped me get to where I am today,” said Donaldson.

Her drive to become something more and the calling she felt to serve will eventually find Donaldson molded into one of our nation’s finest soldiers; a United States Marine.

Brianna Donaldson transformation will begin at MCRD Parris Island in South Carolina.

“The Marines are the right choice for me to challenge myself and overcome my weaknesses,” said Donaldson.

It will certainly be challenging once she enters basic training, but for someone like Donaldson who believes growth comes from challenging yourself, she should take to the training and come out a better person for it.

Once she graduates from basic training, Donaldson will begin her training to work Administration for the Marines. Donaldson is following in the footsteps of other family members who have served this nation.

“Both my grandpa’s were in the military, one was in the Marine Corps and the other was in the U.S. Navy and my dad was in the U.S. Army,” said Donaldson.

The future Marine offers this advice to other students considering military service.

“The advice I would give other people coming into the military is push past your weaknesses and no one can make you better only you can,” said Donaldson.

While Ngo is one of the leaders of Andover’s defense, he feels like it has been a group effort to the season, where the Trojans have already won more games than they did a year ago.

“Our coaches come in with a great game plan every week and the players come into film on Sunday’s ready to learn,” Ngo said. “I’m just one piece to a great defense. Individually I am trying to work on getting a better feel for the other teams offense.”

Ngo plans to be a chiropractor after college.

The three-sport athlete believes as a senior it is his responsibility to set a good example for other students.

“He’s had a big impact on me throughout my childhood and has shaped a lot of who I am today,” said Urwiller.

Academics are always the focus for Urwiller. After graduating, Urwiller plans to attend Sterling College where he plans to study Theology and participate in the theater department. Urwiller said his father has been a significant influence on and off the field.

“I was extremely happy when I found out we would be able to have school in person. Being away from all my friends when I’m used to seeing them daily was really difficult. As for football, I couldn’t have been more excited when we started the season. Being able to see my friends all day and then going outside to grind with my brothers directly after is a special thing.

We understand how much of a gift from God being able to play this year is,” said Urwiller. “I play football, basketball, and golf. Football is by far my favorite, but I love each. God’s gifted me with abilities, so I love that I’m able to glorify Him in sports year-round. My team and teammates are very important to me. I love those guys. The team is very close-knit this year and have meshed very well. This is a team that has everything you could ask for: leadership, dependability, talent, and drive.”

Returning to school and competition was a big moment for Urwiller and his classmates.

“Change can be an effective and necessary part of life, but we have to understand what we are changing or progressing toward. At Central Christian, we want to live the lives that Christ wants us to. Our senior class has made it a point to be the best example of Godliness that we can,” said Urwiller. “From Bible studies, to one-on-one conversations, to mentoring underclassmen, our class has done it’s best to change and impact our school for the better. As for the community, participating in events such as Love Hutch, has been very impactful in the community as well as in my own heart.”

ATHLETE OF THE MONTH Talia Wright - Wichita Southeast Three-year volleyball letterman Talia Wright is now a senior at Southeast High School and a starting middle hitter. Wright got her start in the sport thanks to a friend introducing the sport to her in their backyard.

“I’ve been playing volleyball for five years. My friend Allison first introduced me to volleyball in her backyard and I just immediately fell in love with it,” said Wright.

Playing with this group of girls is more like playing with a team of friends for Wright. She loves being part of this team and helping lead them this season.

“They’re truly my best friends and we all have each other’s backs on and off the court,” said Wright. “I do consider myself a leader, it’s important to set a good example because I was in the same position as they were, I needed somebody to look up to, who played volleyball and understood how frustrating the game could be. Once all of the upperclassmen graduate it’s their turn to take on the leadership role and lead the younger ones.”

“It means so much to me, ever since I began playing volleyball, I haven’t really ever had an off season, so to know that it’s paying off and people notice my hard work only pushes me to keep training and getting better,” said Wright.

After graduating, Wright said she plans to play volleyball for Neosho County Community College while pursuing her degree. College will certainly be a great time in her life, but Wright said she will always remember the fun times she has enjoyed as a varsity volleyball player for Southeast.

“My favorite memories will be the road trips to substate and pregame jam sessions in the locker room,” said Wright.

When she’s not on the court you can usually find her watching shows like The Vampire Diaries, making TikToks and spending time with family.

All Seasons Sportswear Athlete of the Month: Jy’Vaughn Martin

By Matt Browning Jy’Vaughn Martin of Heights was chosen as the Midwest Billboard Performer of the Month for October.

Through three games Martin leads the Falcons in tackles with 33 and tackles for a loss with 3.5. He also has a fumble recovery.

“It means a lot to be picked for the player of the month,” Martin said. “It feels good to see all the working and grinding in the dark we did come to light.”

Martin, who is one of the leaders of the defense, believes the Falcons can continue to improve each week and finish the season with a winning record.

“I believe if we follow the coaching and

play how we are coached we can continue to have a winning record, and take it week by week,” Martin said.

Martin finished with 63 tackles last season and if this season was a normal nine game schedule, he would be on pace for 99 tackles.

“Individually I am working on my aggressiveness and learning how to get off blocks, and also keep my team motivated at all times,” Martin said.

Martin is hopeful his football career is not over after this year. But he does know what he wants to do with his

“In college I would like the chance to play at the next level,” Martin said.

“Career wise I want to study Fire Science and become a firefighter.”

Hillsboro Volleyball The Hillsboro volleyball team had significant experience returning this season that led to abounding optimism.

“We are led by five seniors – all of whom have played three or four years of varsity, with three or four underclassmen sprinkled in among them,” Hillsboro coach Sandy Arnold said. “The girls have had a lot of varsity experience, but I think the one thing that has surprised and impressed me the most is their “never

Our team holds high expectations every year, so obviously our ultimate goal is to win state. That has not changed.

“Our theme for the season is “Now or Never” – we know we are lucky to even be able to play this season and are acutely aware it could end abruptly, so we try to play each match like it might be our last,” Arnold said. “Maybe that’s part of the reason these girls have shown so much fight. Whatever it is, I hope they continue to show it the rest of the season.”

That optimism increased even more when the Trojans won the Douglass Tournament in early October. Hillsboro went from a team that was likely going to have a winning record to a team that was one of the best in Class 2A.

The Trojans are one of the top teams in Class 2A and are primed to make a run at their first state tournament appearance since 2014.

Nate Harding of Maize was voted as the Wichita Large Schools Preseason Offensive Lineman of the Year.

Harding received nearly 30,000 votes, which was 45 percent of the overall vote.

“It means a lot because I have been working so hard this off season and I’m glad it’s paying off,” Harding said.

Harding was a first team all-league and honorable mention all-state offensive lineman last season.

This year, Harding and the Eagles’ offense have scored over 41 points per game.

“We have had a great season so far and are hoping to build off of our mistakes we make and become better each week,” Harding said. “As an individual I’m working hard on being the best teammate I can be and making the people around me better.”

After high school, Harding has plans bigger than football.

Campus Spotlight: Paul Sevart

By Matt Browning Cross Country runner Paul Sevart was chosen as the Campus Profile Athlete of the Month for October. As a sophomore, Sevart was a 6A state qualifier last season and finished 77th.

“To improve my placement, I’ve been pushing my team to make me better,” said Sevart, about trying to finish higher at state this season. “A successful season would be winning the league and getting back to the state tournament.”

So far this season, Sevart has finished 10th at the Andover Invitational, eighth and ninth at Derby Invitational #1 and Derby Invitational #2 and ninth at the Newton Invitational.

“This season has gone great,” Sevart said. “Even if the virus has made things a little worse.”

1ST IMPRESSIONS ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

1st Impressions Athlete of the Month: Elijah Harbin The 1st Impressions Athlete of the Month is Wichita North soccer star, Elijah Harbin. As a senior Harbin is a captain for North and has helped lead the team to a 4-2 record. So far he has scored three goals and recorded one assist, but he’s expecting more of himself and his team.

“I’ve played okay, but I’m expecting to score more as the season goes on and do a better job of setting up my teammates. We’re still in the race for the city league so we’re just trying to make a run at that,” said Harbin.

Elijah takes his role as a captain and leader for his team seriously. “I just try to show them a good example,” said Harbin, “also just try to lead them in the best way possible so that they’ll trust me and also just be there for them.”

Harbin and his teammates still have big goals for the rest of the season, and they know what it will take to achieve them.

“We have to be better finishing scoring chances, defensively we have played really well, and we’ve moved the ball well we just need to finish our chances,” said Harbin.

Besides soccer Harbin says he also plans to compete in track this year. After high school he hopes to play soccer at the college level.

Via Christi Behind the Scenes: Amy Flaming Last year, Amy Flaming led the charge to reinvigorate the Goessel school booster club which had dwindled to just a handful of people and businesses two years ago to 44 investors last year. The newly formed Amy Flaming Goessel Bluebird Backers now seeks to support not only the athletic teams but also all clubs, teachers, academics and fine arts. Flaming serves as current president of the Goessel Bluebird Backers and continues to invest many hours into the organization and planning of fundraising events and support programs for every member of the Goessel community.

“My husband and I have three kids in the Goessel school system and love to be involved in supporting them and their peers. The principal, Mr. Boden approached several parents in the spring of 2019 to see if we could breathe new energy into our current Booster Club. We met and brainstormed through that summer and put together new opportunities for the community to support our school,” said Flaming. “The Goessel Bluebird Backers Booster Club is excited to support our high school students, teachers, classrooms, and activities; as well as the junior high students and their events and teachers. SCCDAT Athlete of the Month: Garrett Howell

Garrett Howell is a star football player at South Haven High School. Through the first four games of the season the senior tight end and cornerback has 14 receptions for 253 yards and three touchdowns.

As a senior Howell has also taken on a leadership role for his team.

“As a senior I try to keep everyone’s heads up during the game. We’ve got quite a few new players this year. Some who haven’t played since Junior High so we have had a tough time figuring out little mistakes to win more games,” said Howell.

That leadership also shows off the field. Howell is a member of the Sumner County Community Drug Action Team.

“On the drug action team we have meetings to talk about different things we can do in our own communities to keep kids away from drugs and alcohol,” said Howell, we occasionally have meetings throughout the year to meet with other schools and talk about different things they’re doing to give us ideas to bring back to our own community.”

Howell is also getting it done in the classroom with a 3.0 GPA. Off or on the field Garrett is an example of leadership in his community.

Wichita Small School OL Poll Winner: Cole Herman Cole Herman of Halstead was voted as the Wichita Small School Preseason Offensive and Defensive Lineman of the Year. In the offensive lineman poll, Herman received over 13,000 votes, which was 44 percent of the overall vote.

Last season, Ott recorded 62 total tackles, 39 solo tackles and one fumble recovery and is averaging 12.6 tackles per game this season.

One of Ott’s focuses this season has been to improve his physique and gain weight.

“It means a lot (to be voted),” Ott said. “I’ve worked really hard this offseason and getting recognized is something special.”

Cort Ott from Circle was voted as the Wichita Small Schools Preseason Linebacker of the Year. Ott received 24,019 votes, which was 33 percent of the overall votes.

“I’m very happy with my individual performance this season,” Ott said.

DRIVE TO ZERO STUDENT OF THE MONTH Landon Staley, Goddard Goddard High School senior Landon Staley is one of several student-athletes involved in the SAFE (Seatbelts Are For Everyone) program which is a peer-to-peer program that focuses on increasing teen restraint compliance through education, positive rewards and enforcement.

“I got involved in the SAFE program around the start of junior year,” said Staley.

Also, a powerlifter and track and field athlete for Goddard, Staley balances his full schedule between sports and club activities. Making a difference in the lives of his classmates drives Staley to be part of the program.

Staley said he enjoys being part of the program and helping to make a difference within his own community. Away from school, Staley said there are several things he enjoys doing, but staying active is always a focus.

“I enjoy working out and always being active as much as possible,” said Staley.

The senior has big plans after he graduates from Goddard High School.

“My plans after school are to attend Wichita State University and major in criminal justice and minor in psychology,” said Staley.

“SAFE club seemed like a club that truly could make a small difference but that one small decision could mean a lot,” said Staley. “The other members of SAFE club have done a multitude of things for this club but some of the bigger things are monthly petitions and that are a promise to wear your seatbelt and then

once we have collected all of them, we draw a couple and the winner of the drawings get a gift card. It is a small exercise but can also mean a lot.”

Joma Bowling Bowler of the Month: Trent Sheridan Trent Sheridan of Buhler High School was a 2020 5-1A state medalist as a freshman. That experience has set the table for what is building up to be a great high school career on the lanes.

“It was really awesome to bowl at state because there are so many talented bowlers across the state. I wish the whole team could have experienced what it is like to bowl with the top high school bowlers in Kansas. Our team last year did not have any seniors, so I think we have a good chance of making it to state as a team this year,” said Sheridan.

At ten years old, Sheridan got his first taste of bowling thanks to an 8-for-8 program. Now during the season, he bowls nearly every day and in the offseason he’s hitting the lanes two or three times per week. As a member of the varsity team, Sheridan enjoys competing alongside his teammates as they push each other to continue improving.

“What I like about my team and teammates are how much they push me. Everybody wants to be the best, so when you have 3-5 guys on your team that are trying to be the best it pushes me to put more time in my game to be the best bowler that I can be. We also feed off each other very well when we bowl together,” said Sheridan.

US Logo Player of the Month: Graham Burmeister - Wichita Independent Wichita Independent senior Graham Burmeister loves the game of football.

What the game has given him over his high school career is something he will carry with him for the rest of his life.

The thought of not playing a season or having to cut the season short was nearly too much to consider. Burmeister, alongside a fellow teammate, worked tearlessly to ensure the season would continue for his final campaign.

The program picked up their first win in several seasons when they defeated Elkhart, 36-19 breaking a 22-game losing skid. That moment will be cherished by Burmeister and his teammates for the rest of their lives.

But more moments were on the brink of never happening again this season.

Head coach Eric Swenson knew a tough decision was coming. With the number of players on the team dwindling,

Burmeister set out to save the season by recruiting classmates to join the team, giving them the numbers they needed to compete. Burmeister said his fellow classmates, “took pity on us,” and joined the team. With a 23-man roster, coach Swenson took his team on the long journey to victory thanks in part to the efforts of a senior who refused to allow his final year on the football die.

ICT Cheer Legacy Team of the Month: Kingman High School

Head coach Melissa Tetrick is in her first year as coach of the Kingman Eagles cheer squad. Her interest in coaching the team started a long time ago, now she finally has the opportunity to be part of the Kingman spirit.

“We only have four young cheerleaders on the squad this year. We graduated several from last year, and we only gained one freshman. We may be few, but they are very energetic and love what they do. I couldn’t ask for a better group of girls,” said Tetrick.

COVID-19 has the squad wearing masks (that match the uniforms) at school, but they can cheer without them. Coach Tetrick said it has created some challenges.

“The most upsetting thing about COVID-19 for the girls is they can’t stunt. They were all looking forward to stunting this year. Before school started, we had practice every morning for a couple of weeks. I had to take their temperatures and record them each morning. The school has installed infrared thermal imaging that reads the students’ temperature as they enter the school each morning. So far, we have been successful in keeping COVIC-19 at bay,” said Tetrick.

The level of excitement has not dropped thanks to their efforts.

“I love to see the excitement of the girls when they come up with a new cheer or dance routine. They can’t wait to perform their creations at the football games in front of the crowd. The school spirit the girls have is projected at the games. I have always been a big proponent of school spirit and school comradery. I have lived in Kingman all my life except when at college. Kingman High School will always have a place in my heart,” said Tetrick.

A member of the football, basketball and baseball teams, Gimino loves to compete and challenge himself to perform at a high level. Competing with his teammates and representing Kapaun Mt. Carmel High School drives Gimino to play for more than just personal gain. Holding his teammates and school in high regard is one factor that makes Gimino a special kind of athlete.

“I like competing and working to get better. I like the support you get from the faculty and students. I also like playing a team sport because it teaches you about life, how to handle ups and downs, and work for a goal,” said Gimino. “I’m honored to represent Kapaun because I feel like I’m representing more than just my high school, I’m also representing my faith. My teammates mean a lot to me. I’ve played with some of them since I was six years old. They’re my friends and they’ve got my back and they know I’ve got their back too.”

After experiencing the cancellation of last spring due to COVID-19, Gimino has learned to cherish every opportunity to compete.

“Last Spring was really crushing. Our basketball team made it to State and that got shut down. Our entire baseball season was cancelled, which was so disappointing, especially for our seniors. I was ready to get back into a more normal schedule, to see my teachers and friends and to go out and compete in football under coach Schartz,” said Gimino.

By Matt Browning Local Esports fundraising company, OZ Esports announced they would be hosting the first citywide Esports tournament to benefit the Greater YMCA on Saturday, October 17.

“Large fundraising events are not possible in this environment of COVID-19, so we have to get a little creative with how to raise funds,” said Hillary Alexander, Associate Vice President of Philanthropy for the Greater Wichita YMCA. “When we discovered the success OZ Esports had with other local not-for-profits, we realized this was the perfect option to engage our membership in a safe, fun and competitive activity.”

The YMCA hosts a variety of fundraising activities across the city including multiple dinners with silent auctions.

“Our fundraising needs have continued,” said Shane Loy, Regional VP for the YMCA. “But we simply are unable to bring our members together like in years past due to

COVID-19.”

In 2019 the Greater Wichita YMCA served 300,000+ community members through free and low-cost advocacy programs including before- and afterschool activities, job prep, and Late Night.

Money raised annually through our Strong Community campaign allows the YMCA to continue to serve all regardless of ability to pay.

“Online gaming is very popular, and something done by a majority of people across a wide age range,” OZ Esports, CoFounder Joey Nowlin.

According to statistics, nearly 70% of US households have a gamer.

“We saw an opportunity to help a notfor-profit fundraiser by leveraging

this activity,” said Nowlin. “It’s an activity that can be done from home, it’s very competitive and an activity that allows the YMCA to engage all of its members. We don’t charge anything to set up a tournament and provide a complete, turnkey solution allowing any organization to quickly and easily raise money.”

There will be three games offered— Fortnite, Smash Brothers and NBA 2K21. The donation or entry fee is $10.

Estimated prize pool will be $200 for each tournament, paid in cash and prizes.

The tournament sponsor is Sunflower Bank. Registration will be open beginning October 10. All tournament proceeds will go to the Wichita Greater YMCA.

Julia Sherman Kapuan Mt. Carmel Julia Sherman is a senior and a doubles tennis player at Kapaun Mt. Carmel High School. Tennis is a big part of her life.

Sherman loves to compete and represent Kapaun while cheering on her teammates.

Her doubles partner is more than just a teammate on the court.

“My teammates mean a lot to me. They are always watching and cheering even during their matches. My doubles partner Jackie means the most. She’s always super positive and just great to be around on the court,” said Sherman. “The thing I love the most about being an athlete at Kapaun is being able to play my favorite around the best people. The tennis team is like one big family and has some of the best girls to be around.”

Once she graduates, Sherman would like to play tennis at the next level, but she is considering attending college at Newman or UMKC. Every year of high school is full of great memories for Sherman. One stands out about them all.

“My favorite memory as a student athlete is playing in the finals at City League my junior year. I was the last match on and had to play under the lights on a stadium court at WSU. everyone was there watching and cheering me on,” said Sherman.

Orange Theory Athlete of the Month: Eley Johnson - Collegiate

Collegiate High School senior Eley Johnson is an outside hitter for the varsity volleyball team. Being part of this team and competing with her friends on the court is a special moment for Johnson.

“I love my team because we are a family. My teammates are dedicated, hardworking, and love the game of volleyball,” said Johnson.

As a senior, being a leader on and off the court is important to Johnson. Setting the tone for the team and always working to get better is what makes this team such a tight group. Every trip, every game is a memory they will never forget.

“I don’t have a particular memory, but every time

I step on the court with these girls is a blast,” said Johnson. “I was incredibly excited to return to school and even more excited to have a season.”

As a representative of Collegiate High School, Johnson explained why it’s important for her and her teammates to always show what’s in the DNA of a Collegiate student-athlete. “Representing your school is a big responsibility and obligation.

As athletes, we represent our school through sportsmanship, leadership, and dedication,” said Johnson.

Upon graduating from Collegiate, Johnson plans to attend college and major in Elementary Physical Education.
