ROELAND EXPERIENCE! VZW Roeland organizes leisure activities for young people aged 6 to 19 in Dutch, French and English to improve their language skills and to stimulate their interest in foreign languages. Roeland developed its own playful, creative teaching methods, aiming at total immersion. During the school holidays we organize residential language courses as well as day camps in Flanders, Wallonia, France and the United Kingdom. Teenage school groups can participate in our annual youth drama projects in French (Artscène) or English (Artscene). We also conduct French language city visits for schools to Ghent, Namur, Liège and Lille. In 2008 we started Dutch language day camps for foreign newcomers. With success: in 2011 we won the ELIT* label (*European Label for Innovative Language Education) for our Dutch language initiatives for newcomers. Roeland was founded in 1971 and our offices are situated in Gent, Belgium. Our team consists of 9 employees, working together with more than 1,000 volunteers. Through our activities we reach an average of 13,000 children and teenagers annually. Roeland is recognized and subsidized by the Flemish government, the province of East-Flanders and the city of Gent. For more information, please refer to our website: www.roeland.be.
OUR BASIC PRINCIPLES SPEAKING TARGET LANGUAGE AT ALL TIMES During our 13+ language courses in the UK only the target language is spoken. Students as well as instructors abide by this rule. We apply the rule less strictly during the junior day camps for children aged 11-13. The children are encouraged to speak the target language at all times, but may ask staff (or their classmates) questions in their mother tongue if necessary.
2
DIALOGUE AND PARTICIPATION To encourage students to always speak the target language, we support the principle of ‘active presence’. This means that language instructors are always present and mix with the students, not only during lessons but also during sports activities, games, meals and breaks. There are so many topics to discuss: lessons, games, yesterday’s or tomorrow’s activities, workshops, holidays, family, hobbies, …
CORRECTING MISTAKES Our language instructors do not only stimulate the students to talk, they also correct their mistakes, improving the language learning process. They do so unobtrusively, encouraging students at the same time. Such individually tailored feedback is typical for our language courses and according to us, a prerequisite to guarantee high quality.
LANGUAGE INSTRUCTORS We believe that the presence of native speakers is imperative to ensure high-quality language courses. Therefore we are always looking for native speakers to work as language instructors.
junior DAY CAMPS (9-13 YEARS) Our Junior day camps were designed to meet the needs of the youngest participants (ages 11-13). Language instructors are responsible for teaching as well as leisure activities. • •
The language instructors conduct two playful teaching activities in the morning (in separate groups, maximum 10 children per group). In the afternoon the language instructors lead an afternoon activity/outing/game for the entire group (maximum 20 children). English is spoken at all times: in class, during singing sessions, games: the children are continuously stimulated to discover new words and phrases.
LANGUAGE COURSES 13+ During our residential language courses for ages 12 and up we work with two different teams of language instructors: a team of assistants who take care of leisure activities, and a team of teachers.

TRAINING TRAINING WEEK-END FOR NEW LANGUAGE INSTRUCTORS All Belgian applicants (teachers and assistants) are invited to participate in our training weekend. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about the Roeland language holidays and to try out newly gained knowledge during sports activities, singing sessions, afternoon games and evening workshops. Language instructors are introduced to different types of teaching that are distinctively Roeland. There are separate weekends for our Dutch, French and English projects. •

The project’s aim is to improve the teenagers’ foreign language skills through theatre and performance. During the school year the youngsters meet up weekly with their teacher and a a director to create and rehearse their play. In spring, the school groups stage their play at our annual festival in Gent. During the festival, the groups watch each other’s plays, express their appreciation during panel discussions, participate in drama workshops and enjoy a tour of Gent. The Flemish groups can also participate in a theatre festival abroad.
