AGE AGAINST THE MACHINE
INTERIM HOUSING FOR THE RECENTLY RETIRED Leeds, West Yorkshire May 2024
Many older people remain in large homes meant for bigger families, facing financial constraints despite owning property. Downsizing is challenging due to financial, physical, and emotional reasons. A gradual downsizing plan, with temporary storage near new flats, can help. Converting an abandoned textile warehouse into temporary housing for retirees addresses the UK’s housing crisis by providing manageable living spaces and releasing equity, with an atrium serving as a central space for reselling refurbished possessions.
“Projected
from the North to the South, the existing warehouse radiates into a vibrant living quarter reaching towards the river. In between the two structures is the Weighing House.”
SECTION OF SOCIETY
CIVIC CENTRE
North Shields, Tyne and Wear May 2023
The Arches, a civic centre, nestled at the fish quay at North Shields along the River Tyne, stands as a testament to the old and new, fostering a vibrant symbiotic relationship of the city council and the society. Within this challenging site of a slope, the union of different citizens, transforms the once quiet fish quay into a vibrant market where care and information are exchanged.
“Arches for the civic centre symbolises stability and serves as gateways, inviting community engagement and reflecting strength, adaptability, and unity.”
ELASTICITY OF MEMORY
NORTH EAST FILM ARCHIVE
Newcastle, Tyne and Wear
Jul 2021
In close proximity to the previous project, North East Film Archive (NEFA) is located in the Ouseburn Valley and along the North side of the River Tyne in Newcastle. NEFA has a multifaceted collection of films and television footage of North East England. From the scenery along the coastline, the heavy industry to the working lives, memories spanning over 130 years is accumulated at the archive. The aspiration of this project is to not only provide a long term future-proof film archive but also to create a space for visitors to reflect.
“Think of memory as elastic. The further back in time, the easier it is to be forgotten. Some people want to forget unpleasant memories, while others wish to remember.”
