Women

for Good

Dear Readers,

Women 2 Women Michigan Magazine was formed out of a desire to showcase women, to create a platform for positive articles focused on empowerment, inspiration, and hope for all women. Love of reading inspirational books led to producing a publication that showcases the authors of these books. We hope that other women will find encouragement for life’s challenges. This issue is packed with so many moving and inspiring articles to get you into your place of confidence and strength to welcome the warm months with a new attitude. We are shown what true strength is through our cover feature, Sgt. Stephanie Shannon. Her story of overcoming and transforming into a woman who exudes empowerment is sure to move you to challenge yourself to set forth on your own personal journey to help others in your community. Julietta Chevalier shares her article on Acro Yoga and shows us that the sky is no limit where healthy living is concerned. If you think tackle football is just for guys, we are happy to dispel those notions with an introduction to the Flint City Riveters female tackle football team. This team only believes in a “can-do” attitude and inspires everyone to set aside self doubt and learn that hard work and support opens doors once thought closed. Look for recipes and more within the pages and don’t forget the Calendar of Events as there are some great events taking place that you will want to join in. If you have an inspiring story you would like to share with our readership, go to w2wmichigan.com or send it directly to info@w2wmichigan.com.

“ 10

Embracing the power you have within yourself as a woman is the best gift to give yourself.

Meet Stephanie J. Shannon, author, entrepreneur, consultant, inspirational speaker and veteran advocate. Born and raised in Grand Rapids, MI she now lives in the greater Flint Genesee County area. Bringing extensive experience in business, social work, community development, leadership, ministry, and more, her passion is non-profit organization management and community development. Today Stephanie is a confident, committed, strong willed and determined woman with a passion to help others, and it was her tenacity that got her where she is today. Her story is compelling and inspiring. A disabled Gulf War veteran who served in the Persian Gulf Desert Storm 1990-1991 War, Sergeant Shannon experienced Military Sexual Trauma, which affects 1 in 3 women in the military every day. As a result, she spent two decades struggling with undiagnosed PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) caused by the experience. Following her military service Stephanie attended college, receiving her B.A. in psychology and then working as a foster care specialist with the Department of Social Services. “I had no balance in my life and was consumed with my work to the point of burnout. Eventually I was placed on medical leave. From there, my PTSD rendered me unemployable. I lost everything and had to enter a homeless veterans program. Not being able to take care of myself; having to rely on someone else to help me was one of the most humbling experiences in my life.”

After years of therapy and medical treatment through the Ann Arbor VA Health System, Stephanie was able to recover from her invisible wounds of war. “I decided to write my story to bring closure and help others overcome their own personal traumas. My first book, Battling the Storm Within was released in 2014. After a year of advocating for veterans and increasing public awareness of the many issues that veterans face, I founded Michigan Women Veterans Empowerment to help other female veterans transition to civilian life, recover from losses, and find their voice.” Stephanie founded her faith based non-profit organization because of her experience. “I spent several years trying to find my voice and regain the ground I felt I lost. Since then I have rediscovered who I am and have redefined my purpose. I am now in a position to help and advocate for women veterans who are struggling with the challenge of readjusting back into civilian life, determined that no other woman veterans will suffer like I did.

Our mission is to identify, connect, empower, recognize, support and provide a voice for the women veterans in Michigan.”

Stephanie explains how difficult it was trying to understand why she was violated as there was no logic or reason behind it. She says, “You will never be able to understand other people’s

“I wake up every day with my mission in mind that God gave me another day to get it right and to help someone else recover from their pain and suffering. I believe that if God allowed me to suffer such affliction that He has a purpose for it. I decided to confront my fears and do what I needed to do to rediscover who I was. I stopped blaming everyone else for the pain I was in and began to own all that I was responsible for.”

motives. The key is to understand yourself. I learned that everything that I needed was within me and I didn’t need anyone to rescue me or validate me. I needed to empower myself; I stopped making excuses and made the choice to change. Keeping faith in God and in yourself is the most important thing, being your own cheer leader and making sure you out do yourself by not competing with anyone but yourself.” When asked what tips she has for our readers, she stated, “Embracing the power you have within yourself as a woman is the best gift to give yourself. Don’t compare yourself to anyone else and compete with no one but yourself. Master the art of loving yourself and do not allow anyone to mistreat or use you. Your destiny is not a matter a chance; it’s a matter of choice. Being your own best friend will draw those special people who will love you for who you are. Don’t wait for anyone to validate you, celebrate you or even care about you, you have to do that for yourself. Live life like every day is your last, never take good health for granted for it’s your wealth. You are important to the world; there’s only one you; so celebrate that uniqueness. You have a future that awaits.” As for her future, here are some of Stephanie’s plans. “I am working with a planning committee of women veterans to put on the first 2016 Michigan Women Veterans Empowerment Conference to be held Sat., Nov 19 2016 from 8 to 4 pm at the International Istitute of Metro-Politan Detroit 111 E. Kirby St. Detroit, MI 48202. I have launched a Michigan Women Veterans Anthology Book project that is collecting stories and poems of women veterans’ voices. Our goal is to publish and release the book at the 2016 MIWVEC Michigan Women Veterans Empowerment Conference. I plan to take the speaking sector by storm in order for others to see, hear and be empowered by my words and my presence. I plan on being me and enjoying the journey I am on, welcoming new opportunities and ventures.” Stephanie will continue to enhance public awareness about the many issues women veterans face and provide solutions, engage women veterans in conversations and build relationships, provide professional high quality speakers and panel discussions that will evoke change in the mindset of women veterans. She plans to showcase Michigan women veterans’ gifts, talents and abilities, support and encourage women veterans in every area of their lives, provide opportunity for women veterans to network, be educated and connected to their community resources. Empowering women veterans that have served or are currently serving through networking, career and professional development. Providing mentorship and equip women veterans with the tools to pursue a rewarding career, empower women veterans who want to become entrepreneurs, encourage women veterans through mentorship, to strengthen the sisterhood bond between women veterans. These initiatives will help to develop and maintain a strong community of women veteran supporters and to educate the community about women that have served are veterans. Considering the extreme hardships she has faced and left behind, there seems no doubt that Stephanie Shannon will do all this, and more.

Q&A

Ask Shunt ai

“The first thing you need to learn is that the person who is angry at you for setting boundaries is the one with the problem.” Drs. Cloud and Townsend Dear Shuntai,

When People Leave My Life Photo by Sheri Harvey Shar Graphics

I don’t know about you, but I don’t like it when co-workers leave or family members take an extended trip. Besides the fact that change is difficult to accept, there’s a certain comfort in seeing the same familiar face or hearing that certain laugh. When those voices aren’t present and a different painting is hung on the office wall, or a home has another family living in it, I feel the tug on my heart.

People leave jobs and relationships for many reasons. Generally, the separation is pleasant and offers the departing person a new opportunity or chance for real success or happiness.

WOMEN2WOMEN MICHIGAN • www.w2wmichigan.com

But now and then, quite the opposite is true! A loved one walks away. An employee’s position is changed or even eliminated. Or someone moves to a distant part of the country or world and there’s little hope of seeing them again. If we think about facing these changes by ourselves, the outlook can be chilly. We find ourselves overwhelmed with sorrow and even some depression which can take its toll on our daily activities and overall mood. But if we reach to God during these changes, even the ones that are almost too difficult to speak of, then we are agreeing to surrender a part of ourselves to a higher power – one that knows what is best for us. I’ve had co-workers who became friends and then left for outstanding new positions. I’ve been through one painful divorce, - a failure I will have to live with for a lifetime. And I’ve separated from some family and friends, most with no understanding of why the split occurred. But my faith in God has been the one thing that has not changed and that reality, that stable force and grounded, unshakeable love, will always envelop and sustain me, when people leave my life.

12

My life is very complicated right now. I am overextended with expectations that are set on me. I have way too much on my plate with my commitments to family, friends and co-workers. Something has to give in my life because it is driving me crazy. What can you tell me about setting healthy boundaries? Apparently I am not doing so well with it…. Dear Overextended, Setting healthy boundaries in your life can be difficult. However, if you are consistent with practicing the art of setting healthy boundaries; you will gain more control of your life. The Oxford dictionary defines Boundary as a line that marks the limits of an area; dividing line. In relationships it is important to mark limits on how you allow others to interact with you in your life. Boundaries are the lines that we use to protect ourselves. According to Linda Curran, Author of 101 Trauma Informed Interventions “We are constantly setting, shifting, negotiating and renegotiating our personal boundaries with regards to people, proximity, and personal information, boundaries monitor and regulate the degree of personal space within relationship”. In your case, it is important for you to establish some healthy boundaries with the people in your life to keep your sanity. People who have healthy boundaries: • Know what they will and will not allow others to do • Can set limits and still love. • Frequently get what they want in relationships. • Do not take on the responsibilities of others. • Know what they will and will not do. • Can be responsible to others without feeling responsible for them • Feel safe and secure • Interact with people effectively I hope that you’re able to practice healthy boundaries in your personal and professional relationships. Good luck, Shuntai Beaugard, MA, LLPC

Brush Marker Magic:

Surprisingly Simple Color Effects for Cards, Scrapbooks, and Other Paper Art Projects

By Marie Browning

Printed Material

Internationally known crafter Marie Browning brings us Brush Marker Magic, a colorful, whimsical book that inspires adults with the latest adult coloring fad. The book starts with a quick tutorial on markers and supplies. Browning then covers a variety of techniques such as coloring vellum, several kinds of blending, and unique styles of lettering and shading. With numbered instructions and color graphics, this book is easy enough for the novice crafter, but still challenging enough for the more experienced creator. This how-to book is a great item to pair with the many adult coloring books available. In addition, there are several websites that offer free printable coloring pages. Pinterest also has the latest in adult coloring pages.

The Opposite of Loneliness: Essays and Stories By Marina Keegan Printed Material

This compilation of essays and stories is exceptionally poignant as it was published posthumously. Marina Keegan was a talented young writer whose life was cut short by a car accident just five days after her graduation from Yale. Presented much like short stories, the 19 chapters capture the pensiveness of a vivacious, up-and-coming gifted author. Not only does she write musing essays of non-fiction, but we discover intriguing artistry in her fiction pieces, as well. She writes in earnest about her thoughts, feelings and worries. This book review would be amiss if it didn’t mention her ability to wax poetic in the most beautiful and remarkable way possible. Marina, I wish I could tell you, this is your card! You did it!!

Ever Feel Stuck in a Workout Rut? For many, sticking to an exercise routine isn’t a problem, it’s that it becomes a boring routine! Keeping your exercise routine interesting is an important factor in not only enjoying the time we’re investing in ourselves, it also continues to encourage change in our physical progress. Being consistent with regular exercise can find us battling monotony and hitting the dreaded plateau. We tend to stick with what we’re familiar with, but branching out into something different may be just what we need. If we find ourselves hitting the treadmill or step machine every time, try a spinning class or swimming. If you focus primarily on weights, try adding in a boot camp style class for some challenging cardio. Coming up with our own routine seems easy enough, but we’ll likely remain well within our comfort zone. This means we may not get the changes we want because we aren’t pushing ourselves to the level we need to. A personal trainer, program or class will challenge us in ways we may not be comfortable with, but if you don’t feel a sense of euphoria after finishing your routine you probably need to take it up a few notches. Personal trainers or a calendar in which you can follow a planned schedule can be really helpful. Another fun way to liven up your exercise options is to look into the newer classes that are available. For Photo by Igor Mojzes example, with PiYo you’ll only use your bodyweight to perform a series of lowimpact, high-intensity Pilates- and yoga-inspired moves to work every muscle in your body. You’ll sweat, stretch, and strengthen to really chisel your physique. Another option is CIZE. It breaks down professionally choreographed dance routines, step-by-step, so that anyone can dance! You’ll burn hundreds of calories and as a CIZE instructor, I can attest to the fact that it’s so fun you’ll forget you’re actually working out! Lastly, consider taking an intentional, planned break from exercise. A cleanse is a great way to refresh your body, allowing it to reset internally so that when you return to exercising, your efforts are more effective. In addition to a comprehensive 21 day cleanse, I also offer my customers a short 3 day cleanse that kickstarts their exercise program. Just a few changes will go a long way in reigniting some excitement into your fitness. We’re entering a season of growth and new life, so it’s a perfect time to try something new and switch things up!

Cosmetic Dentistry & Different Ways to Restore a Tooth Youthful, healthy smiles can be yours!

Let talk about some basic terms: Lumineers® can be as thin as a contact lens. When bonded over the front of a discolored tooth, it takes on a lifelike appearance. There is minimal (or sometimes no) drilling done on the natural tooth, and that means anesthetic is rarely needed. Because these are custom-fabricated in a Lumineers® lab, it does require a two-visit process: once for impressions and a second visit to bond the Lumineers® in place. We’ve done thousands of cases and have been Lumineer® certified over 20 years. Ask about getting your best cosmetic result! http://www.lumineers.com Crowns are very different, as these replace the bulk of a tooth after decay removal or an accident or injury when there is little tooth structure left to hold a filling. A crown can often repair/replace even a tiny stub of a tooth! In our office, most crowns are made while-you-wait using CEREC 3D and bonded to the natural tooth in one visit. This lessens the potential for a crown to loosen or come off its tooth. Veneers are a product between the other two. Thicker than a Lumineer®, a veneercan be used where more coverage is needed, but the tooth itself does not need to be cut down to a stub. Again, these are bonded in place for strength and durability. One of the advantages of being a pioneer in this field is knowing from experience what lasts longer and looks better even decades later. It’s a lasting investment in your appearance. Flint City Riveters There is a new team in town called the Flint City Riveters, a non-profit women’s FULL CONTACT football team who are apart of the WFA (Women’s Football Alliance) league. The WFA has been around since 2007 and has over 40 teams in 11 divisions.

WOMEN2WOMEN MICHIGAN • www.w2wmichigan.com

The Flint City Riveters are assembled, managed, and operated by players with the intention to provide a platform for women to chase their dreams and challenge themselves mentally and physically. Women2Women Michigan Magazine sat down with some of the players to find out more about the women behind the team. The team was formed by a few players that decided to branch off from another Michigan team. They train Saturdays at the Iceland Arena in Swartz Creek and will be going to a Saturday/Sunday schedule soon. The practices are intense and 3 hours long with structured drills. They started training in October and although they have smaller numbers than they would like, they are focused on becoming a force to be reckoned with in the future. There are many misconceptions about women in football the biggest two being that football is only a man’s sport and that you don’t get hit hard on a women’s league. The Riveters assure that these things could not be further from the truth. So if you haven’t watched a game yet because you think you might be missing some real football action, then you have greatly deprived yourself from an excellent sport full of action. The Riveters are more than just a football team. They are a group of dedicated individuals creating a platform for women to showcase their skills. The team shows women everywhere that there are no limitations to what you can accomplish. It doesn’t matter what your height is or what disabilities you may have as long as you have heart and dedication. These ladies will change your mind about how you view perceived limitations. To the Riveters, there are no limitations in what you can do as long as you believe in yourself. They have transcended the idea of team and have truly become a family on and off the field. They have received a warm reception

16

For more information about the team, please visit their website: flintcityriveters.com Or like them on Facebook: www.facebook.com/flintcityrivetersfootball

from the community and people are finding it exciting that these ladies are not a flag football team but full contact. Painting the Town Positive EarthWorks Gallery on the Go Artist Mentorship Initiative will impact youth artists, professional artists and neighborhood associations, block clubs and grassroots organizations as they collaborate to make Flint a better community. This project was initially developed through funding from the Greater Flint Arts Council Share Art. During the summer of 2015 Sandra Branch, director and owner of Earthworks Art Gallery and Studio, housed on the campus of Christ Enrichment Center, obtained funds for the Gallery on the Go project which engaged professional artists and street artists to develop artist murals on panels throughout the community surrounding Christ Enrichment Center. EarthWorks Art Studio and Gallery on the Go Art Mentorship Initiative in partnership with Christ Enrichment Center is committed to bringing positive and creative change to the Flint community through the use of art to help eliminate neighborhood blight and promote city wide beautification. One of the more prolific examples of Flints blight problem are the buildings and structures that have been “tagged” by local graffiti artists. Gallery on the Go has chosen to address this problem by fostering relationships with these individuals and incorporating their talent towards a positive goal. The initial results of this partnership have produced a series of 4x8 ft. plywood panels painted in a wide range of artistic styles. The purpose of these panels is to provide the community with a unique and creative means of fighting blight. The panels can be put on display in prominent areas to promote neighborhood beautification. The feedback from the community on this project has been overwhelmingly positive. Local block clubs and neighborhood associations have requested panel to use in their blight elimination projects. This initiative will change the visual appearance of Flint community neighborhoods in Northwest Flint. The addition of the art displays will also provide volunteer opportunities for community members to support activities in their communities. The greatest change will be the increase in the level of knowledge and self-esteem of these nontraditional youth artist. All of the current youth artists are low income. Therefore our final projected change is the transition from non professional street artists to professional wage earning artists. The oversight of this program/project will be shared between Sandra Branch, professional artist and owner/operator of EarthWorks Art Studio and Gallery and Danielle Brown-Master of Arts, Executive Director of Christ Enrichment Center. For more information about Earthworks Art Studio & “Gallery on the Go”, contact Sandra Branch 810.624.6810.

Earthworks Art Studio and “Gallery on the Go” Artist Mentorship Initiative is housed at Christ Enrichment Center. They are committed to bringing positive and creative change to the Flint community while providing emerging artists between the ages of 17-30 opportunities to develop murals for grassroots nonprofits, block clubs and neighborhood associations in partnership with professional artists. The Earthworks Art Studio and “Gallery on the Go” Artist Mentorship Initiative will incorporate neighborhood beautification, blight elimination, community improvement, community capacity building and young adult enrichment and education. This project provides an innovative opportunity for community and neighborhood beautification through the utilization of young artists. These young artists have diversified experiences yet need mentorship and development opportunities for them to gain new skills. It is our belief that the community needs the artists and these artists need the community. Therefore, Earthworks Art Studio and “Gallery on the Go” Artist Mentorship Initiative will include partnerships with neighborhood associations, grassroots organizations, block club leaders as well as professional artists who are all interested in utilizing the skills of artists in building a better Flint community. This project will address a variety of community needs. These will include building youth artist opportunities to demonstrate artworks in legal venues. All of these youth participants have participated in illegal art demonstrations, therefore providing engaging opportunities for education, community partnership and art development that benefits the community instead of destroying it.

Listening to Our Personal Narratives Photo by Sheri Harvey Shar Graphics

WOMEN2WOMEN MICHIGAN • www.w2wmichigan.com

Many months ago, I bumped into Helena, an acquaintance I hadn’t seen in several years. As I engaged in the expected small talk, I asked the dreaded question: “How are you?” Even as I asked it, I braced for her response. “I’m busy,” she said. “Oh, so busy!” She updated me on the crazy-hectic lives of her children, the source of all her busyness, sharing the intricate details of their achievements, college aspirations, recitals and upcoming sports engagements. “They just have me running every second of the day!” she said with exasperation. I listened, knowing that she would not ask about my life and family. Ours is not a reciprocal relationship, which is why we have never evolved from acquaintances to friends. As she continued her barrage, and I looked for an escape, I wondered what stories she will tell once her almost-grown children have flown the nest. Who, I wondered, will be there to listen? I’ve been thinking a lot about the stories we repeat as we work out this bumpy life. The narratives we say aloud are the ones we also hear. Said often enough, we begin to believe them. Whether we like it or not, we are defined by our stories, and their reflections shape our days. If the stories we tell are negative, they can have a devastating impact on our physical, mental, spiritual and emotional health. If they are always self-focused, they can alter our ability to connect with others in deep and meaningful ways. I speak from experience. Not so long ago, I found myself repeating the same sad story. Life was full. Oh, so full. I worked too many long hours, didn’t feel I had enough time for the people I love most, and was burdened by responsibility. Friendship seemed a luxury I couldn’t afford. Resentment crept in and

18

started to impact my attitude toward a life I deeply enjoy. People I loved asked me the dreaded question: “How are you?” And I saw on their faces the same expression I no doubt gave to Helena as I repeated my narrative. Clearly, I needed to change and began the tough work of doing so. I started running again. I made an appointment with a counselor. I read The Gifts of Imperfection by Brené Brown. These things gave me the courage to have some hard conversations in which I had to admit I wasn’t the superwoman I had pretended to be. When change came it felt like a small miracle, like finding a flower growing in the deep woods. It’s been six months since I started changing my narrative, but once in a while I slip into my old sad story. When I do, it’s because I’ve once again lost both my balance and perspective, and I readjust. It’s a daily choice. Like all things simple, changing a narrative can be incredibly difficult. This is the paradox of simplicity. But in a world that finds it hard to listen, it is imperative that we listen first to ourselves and take note of the stories we repeat to others. We must also find the courage to change them when needed to feel truly alive.

The Blessings of Awakening

How do we wake up to the longings within? How do we answer our heart as it calls us back to our true Self ? The good news is life continually invites us to wake up to our dreams, our longings, our gifts. Some invitations resonate deep in our hearts while others we struggle to figure out. Sometimes we gladly step into new adventures and sometimes they feel too scary. My wish for you: “When you get the choice to sit it out or dance, I hope you dance.” 1 Because when you let life pass you by, the world suffers the loss of you. I spent a good deal of my life quite stuck, asleep at the wheel. I was unwilling to accept life’s invitations to wake up. As a result, my life never felt quite right, it never fit me well. I dressed up in fear and the shoulds of others to stay unconscious. Through the years, I received thousands of invitations to wake up. Most I never opened, some I didn’t recognize. Yet the invitations kept coming. Finally sick of the fear, the discomfort and my unfulfilled life, I took a step. I stopped confusing my Self with my pain. When I realized I am not my wounds, my fear or my past, I found I could say Yes to me. A simple invitation from a friend sparked my spirit and I was gently shaken wide-awake to the meaning of my life. When I let the pain of life pass through me instead of define me, I began to dance. Aligned with my heart, I felt an incredible aliveness as I woke to new ways of being in the world. I was not my fear, my anger or my wounds. These things were not me and I could let go. So I set to unpacking – willingly, excitedly. And here lies the opening to the heart of us. As I changed my thoughts and actions, I learned: • My wounds are not an excuse for being irresponsible in my actions or in managing my life. Wounds are not a badge of honor and are no excuse for behaving poorly.

• The present moment is where living occurs. It is where we engage life and bring our longings forth. It is where we open life’s invitations and miracles happen. This is how important it is to stay in the present moment!! • The outcome of any moment is always better when I first soften my heart – it is always better. • As I left behind my anger, I experienced a deep emptiness. But now I had the heart of me to put there. • So what happens when you place the heart of you – instead of your wounds – at the center of your life? What changes when love, wisdom and compassion become the blueprint for how you choose to live? • It changed everything. The irony was as I emptied myself, my life became fuller. • Love is what is required of us and is the measure of our lives. Choosing love is what is required of us as we face the frustrations of daily living. Being loving is more than doing things for others when life is difficult for them. Choosing love is also about being loving when things are difficult for us. Stepping into the wild unknown and letting go of old ways can be terrifying at first. Accepting invitations to new possibilities can seem overwhelming. Yet waking up and stepping in is rich with blessings – blessings of peace and possibilities, forgiveness and love, grace and healing. Love it!! _____________________________________________ 1. Lee Ann Womack, “”I Hope You Dance”

the Obvious

We, as women, often find ourselves in the most precarious situations. Situations that require us to give of our time, hearts and joy. Sometimes, these events can even disrupt our very existence…and yet we go on…neglecting ourselves for the sake of others. We forget to replenish. We put off self care for their care. Our own health, happiness and well being become lower on our own priority list because we put it there, it is our own fault that our inner-resources become depleted, we do not take the time to replenish them…until CRASH…like a house of brittle cards, it all comes tumbling down. Now who will take care of everything we have been juggling???

As a women’s Whole Life Coach, these are the problems that seem insurmountable, to the women I coach. They are making certain that the needs of everyone else are met, before tending to their own. This can lead to emotional and physical depletion, and yet they continue presenting a brave facade, hiding their resentment. Something needs to be done and spring is an excellent time to do it. Spring is a season to recharge, clean your house, freshen up your look, so why not take this time to rejuvenate yourself and your life. It is a season of promise, lightness and renewal. Let’s work together to lighten your load and allow a brightness to seep deep into your core. Let’s work on returning that spring (pun intended) in your step, that smirk on your face and that twinkle in your eye. In my coaching practice I have used these tried and true methods:

5 4

22

5. Make sure that you allow yourself a little down time EVERY DAY. Quiet your mind. Take a walk, have a long relaxing bath, sit in a private spot and meditate, go to the gym, focus on your breathing, practice yoga or read. Do something, anything, alone, that makes you happy. 4. Treat yourself. You deserve to be rewarded for your efforts. Think of you as your own employee. You go above and beyond, thank YOU. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy,

although it could be. If you want to keep it simple, splurge on a piece of dark chocolate or a latte. Want to kick it up a notch? How about a new piece of jewelry, dress or shoes? Make you feel special, a bit pampered and relaxed.

3. Get away from the location and/or situation. Aging parents, grandchildren, a new baby, work, house work, laundry, your children or whatever is draining you, has got to be left behind. Have a date night, a girls’ night out, a glass of wine, a class, a vacation, spa day… an escape. You need this to get back in touch with you. Even a short period of time will change your perspective. A trip to Italy would work wonders. I’m just saying…do not limit how deeply you drink from the rejuvenation fountain. 2. Have a confidant. Don’t bottle up your emotions. We all need a “vent – mate”. There are those who want to solve the problem, they may offer solutions you haven’t thought of, so listen, but sometimes we may need someone willing to let us yell, complain and even cry. It’s cathartic. We have to let “it” out or “it” will fester into resentment, the top of the abyss. The abyss is beyond self help. Stay away from causing yourself unnecessary anguish, please. Find a friend who has experienced a similar situation, made it through and is now looking back. She will understand, want to help and be a most empathetic listener. Women, who have survived, are compassionate nurtures. You, in turn, can offer the same courtesy some day.

3 2 1

1. The two most important things to know are that you are not alone and laughter is the best medicine. Do not isolate yourself from your friends or your family. When they offer to help, let them. Do not be a martyr. Know that it’s okay to be strong and weak at the same time. Allow yourself to experience and understand all of your emotions. Sprinkle your day with humor. Share the load and the laughter. While you so busily care for others, please care for yourself, like an oxygen mask on a plain, save yourself first. So, this spring, as you itemize your “To Do List”, add yourself, near the top. Take a good look at what you have neglected, things that you enjoy but haven’t done, friends that you haven’t seen or spoken with, bottles of wine you’ve yet to drink, places you haven’t gone or movies you’ve been wanting to see…make time for them…make time for you. Keep moving forward, head high, smiling and confident. Only you are responsible for keeping your mind clear, body healthy and spirit fed…do so.

Awaken Your Spirit 3 Tips to Reawaken Your Spirit Start Moving

WOMEN2WOMEN MICHIGAN • www.w2wmichigan.com

Are you ready to emerge from the winter blues and welcome in the new possibilities that spring can uncover? The first and natural impulse is to get outdoors and start moving. The days are now getting longer, the sun is bringing us more sunlight and there is a new sense of vitality creating a “spring in our step” and propelling us to move forward. We begin to hear the birds singing a familiar tune and the tulips and daffodils slowly come out of hibernation to stretch their pedals and peak their heads. We all feel this extra burst of energy and it is the perfect time to develop a healthy exercise routine. To stay committed to any exercise routine you need to make it interesting and fun. If you are always exercising on a treadmill, why not change it up and try the elliptical machine or perhaps add weights if you feel you need the extra change. Whatever exercise you decide to do, make it versatile and fun. Activity promotes a healthier lifestyle and it will leave you feeling energized an empowered.

Good Nutrition

The food we eat can have a great impact on our mood and if you want to look and feel your best, then you need to include some of the foods that will naturally lift your spirits. There are superfoods that have been clinically proven to fight depression, lift energy, ease anxiety and generally make you feel good. Let’s start your day off right and consider these 3 mood-boosting foods to help cheer you up! Salmon is a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, which is associated with maintaining a healthy heart. The absorption of salmon has been connected to a decreased risk of numerous cardiovascular problems, such as heart attack, stroke, heart arrhythmia and high blood pressure. Blueberries. It’s been said that good things come

in small packages and that’s especially true for the blueberry. This little super fruit packs a serious punch as an antioxidant powerhouse which helps as a disease fighter and immune booster. Lentils are low in calories and high in nutrition. They are the perfect legume to eat in the spring with salads and are a great source of protein for any vegetarian dinner plate. With their nutty and earthy flavor, lentils have a high nutritional value anyone can benefit from.

Plant Your Dream Garden

The final tune up is perhaps the most exciting part about spring. Here is where the new buds begin appearing on the trees and the shrubs start sprouting new leaves getting ready to burst on to the scene. This reawakening is a metaphor for all the creativity waiting to reveal itself and become your new reality. Not only does your spring tune up include planting your new garden with beautiful vegetables and flowers but it also consists of creating new dreams and visions. It’s a time to create the life you always dreamed about. Create your garden full of flowers, goals, ambitions desires and hope! It’s time to Envision It, Create It and Claim It!

Creating the Closet of Your Dreams

Spring is a wonderful time to consider a little construction project. But, before you design a closet, what do you think the closet professionals will tell you to do? Purge! There’s no use in designing a closet if you haven’t gone through your clothes in 5 years. Think about what you have and what you wear. Don’t keep something six sizes too small. Who wants to be reminded of that? I know I sure don’t. When you are brave enough to dig into your closet, bring a few garbage bags for clothes you want to donate. Think of places that might be interested in receiving your donations. Choose places that are convenient for you. I create a list and keep track of my donations so I can staple my itemized list to the receipt that I get from the charity organization. Some donation resources: Salvation Army - www.salvationarmyusa.org Purple Heart - http://www.purpleheartpickup.org Goodwill Industries – www.goodwill.org Dress for Success in Ypsilanti - https://www.dressforsuccess. org/?sisid=41&pageid=1 Check with your local churches as well. You may even decide that once you have gone through your closet thoroughly, like magic, you have more room and don’t need a new closet. However, for those of you who now would like to design something new, here are some tips. -Determine your needs. What kind of closet do you need? Who will be using it? -Measure your space. You don’t want to choose something that is not going to fit in the space you have. -Decide how much you can spend -Create the design. Decide if you are going to design it yourself, or hire a contractor to help you. There are plenty of resources out there no matter what way you choose. Good online resources include: www.californiaclosets. com, www.easyclosets.com, www. homedepot.com , www.lowes.com and www.organizeit.com.

Fresh Off the Farm 

Dandelion

Greens

WOMEN2WOMEN MICHIGAN • www.w2wmichigan.com

Everyone has a different approach when it comes to improving your health through dietary means. Our customer’s share with us what works for them and we add that to our constantly growing repertoire of tips and stories. It’s a way to find a collective path to wellness through diet and lifestyle. Our most recent topic of interest has been the element of bitterness in culinary choices. Many countries other than the United States use lots of bitter greens in their diet, not so here where they only make up about 8 percent our calorie consumption. So why is bitter such a good thing? Bitter food helps the liver make bile, which we need to digest food properly. The bile helps our bodies to take in fat soluble nutrients like vitamins A, D, E, and K. A healthy diet increases the amount of bitter foods and reduces the amount of sweet foods. For some people bitter foods are a challenge at first but those that stick with it find that they begin to crave bitter foods and the cravings for sweets fall away. Dandelion greens are a good food to start with when looking for a bitter element to add to your plate. Many farmers grow an Italian variety that is closer related to chicory than the dandelion in your yard. We grow them on purpose, you can also harvest the plants in your lawns free of charge every spring and fall. Make sure that the harvest area has not been sprayed in the past year and that there isn’t any pet or wildlife traffic either. The smaller young leaves of the dandelion plant taste the best and are the most tender. Nettles are healthful greens that can fill the space for bitter in your next meal. They are good for the blood, bladder, kidneys, and urinary tract because of they are high in iron and have a diuretic effect that stimulates and washes these important organs. Kale, spinach, and collards can be added to the list of leafy bitters. In the herb department, cilantro is a detox champion. It can help to bind heavy metals in the blood and help to remove them from the body. In short, mind your bitters and add some balance to your diet. Here is a recipe that might get you going.

28

Dandelion Pumpkin Seed Pesto Makes about 1 cup ¾ C unsalted hulled pepitas (pumpkin seeds) 3 garlic gloves minced ¼ C freshly grated parmesan 1 bunch dandelion greens (about 2 cups, loosely packed) 1 Tbsp lemon juice ½ C extra-virgin olive oil ½tsp kosher salt Black pepper, to taste Preheat the oven to 350°F. Pour the pumpkin seeds onto a baking sheet and roast until just fragrant, about 5 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool Pulse the garlic and pumpkin seeds together in the bowl of a food processor until very finely chopped. Add parmesan cheese, dandelion greens, and lemon juice and process continuously until combined. Stop the processor every now and again to scrape down the sides of the bowl. The pesto will be very thick and difficult to process after awhile — that’s ok. With the blade running, slowly pour in the olive oil and process until the pesto is smooth. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Acro Yoga

WOMEN2WOMEN MICHIGAN • www.w2wmichigan.com

Acro Yoga will turn your life upside down! And that’s a good thing. Why? Have you ever wanted to: Fly like a bird? Get a fabulous back massage? Feel like a kid again? Then try Acro Yoga. This partner yoga blends the slow, deep breathing of yoga with the therapeutic stretching of massage, while tossing in the playfulness of acrobatics. It builds trust, first with yourself, then with your partner, and then with the pose you perform together. This simple act of trust extends to everything and everyone around you. It’s about connecting with others while having fun. Beginning with eye contact, Acro Yoga teaches us how to communicate non-verbally,

which we all do every day, though often unconsciously. Using our sense of intuition while letting go of our fears about what we think we can’t do, Acro Yoga invites us to play (in case we’ve forgotten), share our passion (in case we haven’t yet) and unleash our inner child (in case we didn’t even know we had one)! Requiring a base, flyer and spotter for safety, Acro Yoga is teamwork at its best. By mutually relying on each other, you learn how to talk without words and more importantly, how to listen. You will also improve balance and flexibility as you strengthen your core and sharpen your mind. It’s amazing how quickly you can connect with another person when you look them in the eye, clasp hands together and fly! Besides flying, Acro Yoga teaches you how to relax into a pose

30

and release tension while allowing another to help you stretch muscles you’ve probably never felt before. It’s perfect for existing partners, but also a great way to meet happy new people and create healthy new friendships. You can learn a lot when you’re upside down. Trust me, I know. Better yet, try Acro Yoga for yourself and share what you learn with others. Shuntai Beaugard, MA, LLPC is a Clinical Therapist specializing in individual, couple and family therapy, maintains a private practice in Flint, Michigan and she just recently added radio show host to her repertoire. When asked how the radio show came to fruition, Beaugard responded, “ I never thought about doing a radio talk show. Since becoming a clinical therapist, my friends and I would have interesting conversations about life, parenting, dating, marriage etc. They would constantly say “since you’re a therapist “what are your thoughts about …?” Then everyone began saying “you should have a talk show “ your show would be a good mix of fun, therapy and real talk.” It wasn’t until 8 months after opening her private counseling practice, Re-Connect My Life Consulting & Counseling, that she actually began to seriously consider the thought of launching a talk show. Shuntai Beaugard realized that it was important for women to heal, explore and discover. she wanted the show to be edgy, lively and informative. She approached two friends that she thought would complement the vision she had for the show; Kristy Tester & Lisa Metropoulos. Both women are fun to be around, intelligent, thoughtful and full of energy. Now they are happy to share “Re-Connect My Life with Shuntai & Friends” with the world. Beaugard hopes that the listeners learn how to find their voice and enjoy life by their terms and not feel guilty about it. This show is a platform for women to find healing, self-confidence, hope, laughter and strength. The discussions are lively, unfiltered and therapeutic. The goals of the show are to provide relevant topics that are of interest to women regardless of their phase of life.

Genesee County Heart Walk U of M Flint, University Pavilion, Downtown Flint May 7, 2016 8:30 AM – 11:00 AM www.geneseecountyheartwalk.org Great Lakes Bay Region Heart Walk Krossroads Park, 5600 Fashion Square Blvd. Saginaw May 14, 2016 8:30 AM – 11:00 AM www.midmichiganheartwalk.org

Think of your close family members and friends, and most likely at least one of them has been touched by heart disease. Whether they have had a heart attack, stroke, or one of the major risk factors of heart disease, such as high cholesterol or high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease affects nearly everyone. Many are surprised to learn that heart disease is in fact, the number one killer of Americans, taking more lives than all forms of cancer combined. So it only makes sense that the community will be joining together to fight heart disease, because life is what it’s all about. Life is Why. To fight the No. 1 killer of Americans, the American Heart Association is encouraging companies, families, and individuals to build Heart Walk teams to honor a loved one or even to encourage your friends or colleagues to be heart-healthy. The Heart Walks, will be taking place on Saturday, May 7, in downtown Flint at U of M. The second walk will be held on Saturday, May 14, at Krossroads Park in Saginaw. Gates open at 8:30 a.m. with registration, a short program at 9:00 a.m. and the walks will follow. “The Heart Walk is a fundraiser and awareness event that benefits the American Heart Association and educates the community on the importance of a healthy and an active lifestyle,” said Rodney Parkkonen,

Corporate Events Director at the American Heart Association in Michigan. “The event brings together survivors, caregivers, loved ones, coworkers and anyone who wants to help take heart disease from the No. 1 killer of Americans to No. 2 or even lower.” Walkers not only can improve their heart health and raise the needed monies to fight heart disease and stroke, but also win prizes depending on how much you raise; anyone who raises over $100 will receive a 2016 Heart Walk t-shirt after the walk. But more importantly, participants are making a change for their and other’s heart health. The Heart Association will also be recognizing individuals who have made significant strides to improve their health. The community is encouraged to nominate someone they know for a Lifestyle Change Award. Nominations forms are available through Rodney Parkkonen at Rodney.Parkkonen@heart.org WHY should you walk in the Heart Walk? Life Is Why! The Heart Association makes extraordinary impact through our wide range of lifesaving activities. Here’s how: Improving patient care — Patients are why. We’re improving the quality of health care by creating best practices to treat heart disease and stroke. Our Get With The Guidelines

hospital-based quality improvement program helps heart and stroke patients get the best treatment consistently. Mission: Lifeline helps patients with the most severe kind of heart attack get the specialized emergency services they need to survive. Advocating for better health — Healthy communities are why. Our nationwide volunteer network, You’re The Cure, advocates for key issues at the national, state and local levels such as requiring physical education in schools, implementing clean air legislation and making AEDs mandatory in public buildings. Reaching out to populations at risk — People of color are why. Blacks have higher risk and higher death rates from stroke than whites. Our Power To End Stroke education/awareness initiative helps African-Americans reduce their risk of stroke. More than 23,000 opinion leaders — including mayors, professors, ministers and celebrities — are Ambassadors for the program in their communities.

Raising awareness — Prevention is why. Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women over age 25. But many women don’t make their health a priority. Through Go Red For Women, we’re raising awareness among women about their risks and empowering them to protect their heart health. Protecting the future — Our nation’s children are why. Nearly one in three children and teens in the United States is overweight or obese. As a result, more kids than ever before are developing high blood pressure, high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes. We’re helping today’s children develop lifelong healthy habits so they can grow up to be tomorrow’s healthy adults. Educating Americans — Awareness is why. We save lives every day by providing information and education. We pioneered CPR and millions of Americans use our patient education materials and online tools to help themselves and their loved ones live longer, healthier lives. “The great thing about the Heart Walk is that it is a free event and anyone can participate,” said Parkkonen. “Survivors who may not be able to walk long distances can walk. Mothers pushing children in strollers can walk. Runners can run the route. We encourage fundraising but it’s truly a community event and everyone is welcome.” For more information on the Genesee County Heart Walk or Great Lakes Bay Region Heart Walk and to sign up as an individual or a team, log on to www.GeneseeCountyHeartWalk. org or www.MidMichiganHeartWalk.org.

Don’t Tell My Wife I Wrote This 

Marriage 101

I’m a fan of marriage. Having spent 25 years practicing it, I think I can offer many words of wisdom on the subject. And not just the “Marriage 101” type of information like “Don’t try to be frugal by purchasing your Valentine’s Day card on February 15th” or “Just say NO to beach volleyball on ESPN.” I mean the advanced material. The kind of stuff every engaged couple should be tested on prior to the big day. So I feel well-equipped to offer the following final exam. So, let’s begin, shall we? Please answer the following questions to the best of your ability:

For the men.

For the ladies.

1. When getting into your car do you:

a. Hold the passenger door open for your wife. b. Tell your wife to wait inside the house while you warm up the engine. c. Hand her the keys.

1. You walk into the living room to find your hubby napping peacefully. Do you: a. Turn the vacuum cleaner on three inches from his ear. b. Climb on and give him something worth waking for. c. Slip silently from the room and meditate quietly for three hours.

2. It’s Saturday night and you’re choosing a Netflix film. Do you:

2. You notice a dripping faucet in the kitchen. Do you:

3. While eating dinner out, you notice your beer mug is empty. Do you:

3. The cute cashier at Meijer’s ignores you and engages your husband in conversation. Do you:

a. Ask your wife to make the selection. b. Go straight to the romantic comedies and find something with a not-so-hot leading actress. c. Just play Palm Beach Zombie Massacre and let the chips fall where they may.

a. Order water to drink with the rest of your meal. b. Choke down your carb-free pasta without back-up. c. Ignore your wife’s glare and wave the empty mug at your waitress.

a. Inform your husband and ask him to make the repair this Saturday. b. Don’t bother your husband and call a plumber. c. Shut off the water to that faucet and use the bathroom sink.

a. Strangle the little slut on the moving conveyor belt. b. Ignore it and plan on giving your husband a night to remember so that he won’t be tempted by amateurs. c. Accept the fact that you married a studmuffin and show extra cleavage for the bag boy.

Key: a. You tend toward passive-aggressiveness, try too hard, and were probably told by your mother that you’d end up as a reality TV star. Try a new hobby together, like skeet shooting, to release some of those pent-up anger issues. b. You listed “Marching Band” as a high school sport and had several false identities on Instagram that made you out to be much cooler than you actually were. You should cancel your wedding and hit the next Comic Con in search of romance. c. You don’t overthink it. You go with your initial instinct and hope it doesn’t lead to your arrest or an incurable disease. You are ready for marriage. Possibly a short one, but you are ready! And d., forget the test. Life’s a crap shoot, anyway. Enjoy the ride (and watch all the zombie flicks you like).
