Message from Shelly Strasser
Director of Recreation & Community Services Dear West Allis & West Milwaukee Residents, This past fall a number of our staff attended the National Recreation and Park Association Annual Conference. For many of them, it was the first time attending so they were uncertain and apprehensive. That is often the case for people when trying something new, unfamiliar or outside of their general comfort zone. The willingness they had to go forth with an open mind, proved worthy and valuable as they learned about best practice, were inspired by new ideas for programs, collaborated and networked with other professionals in our field and brought back a plethora of new ideas they hope to implement. Our team encourages all of you to step out of your comfort zone and take a chance on trying a new program with our department this winter/spring. In other big news, we hope you are as excited about it as we are, we invite you to join us this spring as we watch the vision of a new Recreation and Community Services Center, become a reality! Our team is so grateful and appreciative of the on-going support of our Board and the community. Our new Recreation and Community Services Center will provide better access for program registration, office operations, a full size gym, multipurpose rooms, space for our preschool and fitness classes and a renewed energy to best serve and meet the needs of our community. We invite you to follow the construction beginning Spring 2019! Please visit our website at wawmrec.com, follow us on Facebook or Twitter (@wawmrcs) or subscribe to our E-newsletter. Whatever your platform, we look forward to connecting with you. Yours in recreation and service, Shelly Strasser and Team

AM/PM ACTION
AM Action & Afterschool Action 330 Elementary Afterschool Program WAWM RCS Dept. offers before and afterschool programming at all 11 elementary schools on all teaching days. These recreation based programs focus on giving children the freedom to make choices in how they wish to spend their mornings and afternoons within the structured nature of our programs. A healthy balance of active games, team building and academic activities are offered on a daily basis to provide the opportunity for participants to grow each day. Programs run Monday-Friday. Participants will report to the Action location (dependent on site) immediately after school, check in with their leaders and receive a daily nutritional snack. Then the fun begins! Participants are able to freely make choices until they are signed out by a designated parent/guardian. Behavioral expectations are parallel to school expectations. Participants who do not adhere to the behavioral expectations may be dismissed from the program.
Afterschool Action 300 Intermediate Afterschool Program The Action 300 Program is offered at all three intermediate schools in the district. Then participants will have access to a daily nutritional snack and will be informed of the areas available that day. Behavioral expectations are parallel to school expectations. Italian Night Out
All Cooking Classes are held at Nathan Hale - Room 167. Enter at the northeast doors by the cafeteria.
Italian food is one of the most popular ethnic foods in America. It has influenced the way Americans eat and has been assimilated into American culture. The interest started after WWII when returning soldiers brought with them the desire to eat the delicious foods they had been introduced to while serving in the war-torn nation. Italians focus on the importance of freshness and simplicity using seasonal ingredients of the best quality to create fabulous meals. Staci Joers will prepare for you to taste some of her favorites like Italian Beef Spiedini, Aglio, Olio ed Erbe (Pasta with garlic, olive oil and herbs), Cauliflower Calabrese and Torta di Riso (Italian rice pie).
Instructor Staci Joers has an Associate’s Degree from MATC in Restaurant and Hotel Cooking. She has had the privilege of working with many great chefs. Staci will demonstrate how to prepare these recipes and you will observe and sample. Classes are for ages 14 and up. A withdraw from these cooking classes needs to be done at least 72 hours prior to the scheduled class or no refund will be granted.
