Bringing Family & Community Together Through Recreation Since 1934!

Welcome to WA-WM Recreation & Community Services Fall Greetings from Shelly Strasser Director of Recreation and Community Services

It’s my pleasure to share with you the Fall 2018 Activity Guide. As we all know, fall is a time of change….change in the weather, change of schedules as kids head back to school, changing colors of leaves on the trees, time change with daylight savings. Change is constant and happens all of the time and yet so many of us struggle with change.

To change is to make different, alter, transform, take a different course or direction, replace, switch, undergo a modification. Let the WAWM RCS Department and it’s amazing team of instructors, staff and coaches help make the fall change easy on you by connecting you to some great opportunities. Make a change in your life by taking a class for yourself, modify your weekly schedule by registering for a program, if you already are in a program with us-try adding on a new class, transform your mind, body and spirit by actively engaging in a recreation program.

We don’t just talk the talk, we like to walk the walk. We have made a huge change to our Action programs with the new addition of AM Action, a before school care program at all 11 elementary schools. Some of the faces on our administrative team have changed and our fall program line up has changed with new programs and changes to existing programs/practices. Community recreation programs can bring us together - all of us, from all walks of life. Sharing these experiences and working through change together can create bonds that keep us connected as a community and help to build pride in West Allis and West Milwaukee. Change is good when it makes us better and is done together! We look forward to seeing how you decided to change with us this fall!

Andrea has been teaching early childhood classes with us the past 4 years. She felt that working for the WAWM RCS Dept. has provided her an amazing opportunity to work with preschoolers. Watching them grow into their own individuals and developing their own thoughts and personalities is just one of the many bonuses to her job. She has seen many children start her programs nervous and apprehensive then gradually turn into happy, confident little people. Andrea’s creativity and innovative ideas came with a smile every day. She encouraged all students and by the time the session was over, the children were actively participating and engaged. Andrea knows kids are kids and they are going to get messy and make messes and they want to have FUN. That is what her classes were about. We wish the best to Andrea in all her new endeavors. THE WAWM RCS DEPT. WISHES YOU THE BEST AND THANKS YOU FOR ALL YOU HAVE DONE FOR ALL THE CHILDREN IN OUR COMMUNITY!!!!

Dance Program

The WAWM RCS reserves the right to split up, combine classes for the benefit of the program

Dance classes help students develop coordination, range of motion and increased physical fitness through strength, flexibility and endurance. Additionally, social awareness develops as students dance together and begin to recognize themselves in relation to others. Self-discipline and self-confidence are developed as students learn technique and explore their own creativity. Creative Movement classes introduce young dancers (ages 4 - 6) to a structured environment where they learn the basics of dance and classroom etiquette which can be applied to any dance form. Basic dance steps are introduced, though the majority of the class is on a broader objective (balance, dynamics, musicality, etc.) Focus is on broad movement concepts, coordination and rhythm develop as the children explore movement and music through games and exercises. The young dancers will use pom pons, scarves, and other props to help them stay engaged and learn the basic movements. General Mitchell: Thursday Evenings and Saturdays, October 18 - March 9 *Recital: Friday, March 15 & Saturday, March 16, 2019 *Rehearsal: March 14 (*These dates are tentative and subject to change) *If your child is going to perform in the recital at the end of the dance season, there will be a costume fee. “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof”

The West Allis Players Community Theater will begin its 49th season with the Tennessee Williams’ drama, “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.” This play was one of Williams’ favorites among all his works and won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1955. “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” is set on a Southern plantation of some wealth and ruled by the iron fist of patriarch Big Daddy. The family – Big Mama, son Gooper and wife Mae, and son Brick and his wife Maggie – are gathered to celebrate Big Daddy’s birthday. Secrets are revealed throughout the evening. Human frailties are exposed and emotional strengths are tested. “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” ran on Broadway in 1955 with many revivals. This powerful story is NOT to be missed! This play may not be appropriate for young children. For complete details on this and all West Allis Players’ shows, visit our website: westallisplayers.org. Our show dates are: 7:30 pm October 5, 6, 12, 13 and 2 pm on October 14. We accept cash, checks and credit cards at the door! Tickets are $15 for adults, $13 for seniors and students.
