A special message from the Superintendent…

Dear West Allis and West Milwaukee Community Members, You have probably heard the phrase “a sound mind in a sound body.” The WA-WM Schools focus on the first part of that saying each and every day in our classrooms. We want our students to become stronger readers, problem solvers and develop new skills. We continue to strive to have our students achieve at higher levels. This is our commitment to academic excellence.

This commitment to excellence is also demonstrated in our district’s Recreation and Community Service Department.

Their mission is to provide safe recreation and enrichment opportunities that promote lifelong wellness to all ages that enhance the overall quality of life in West Allis and West Milwaukee. Both the traditional winter/spring programs they have planned and the new programs certainly support that mission of developing a sound body.

As a new year begins, I encourage everyone to make a New Year’s commitment to yourself and your family. As you browse through the pages of this Activity Guide, I am confident that you will find a program for you and your family that will demonstrate your commitment to lifelong learning and personal wellness.

*****Weather Cancellations*****

Program cancellations due to inclement weather will be announced over local radio and television stations. A decision regarding evening programs will be made by 5:00 pm. For cancellations due to severe weather, call 604-4900, press 2.

When West Allis-West Milwaukee public schools are closed due to inclement weather all Recreation Department activities for that day will be cancelled.

Tune into WTMJ AM 620, WOKY AM 920 WKLH FM 96.5, WTMJ TV 4, WITI TV 6, WISN TV 12, WDJT TV 58 to name a few for school related cancellations. Every effort will be made to make up classes if schedule permits..

The Recreation Department publishes 3 activity guides per year which are mailed to West Allis-West Milwaukee School District residents.

The Fall activity guide is mailed early August.

The Winter/Spring activity guide is mailed early December and the Summer activity guide is mailed early April.

American Red Cross “Learn to Swim“ Lessons 2015 Winter/Spring Swim Lessons Schedule

**SAFETY FIRST** *IMPORTANT INFORMATION* • All children must be at least 4 years of age (Except Parent & Child classes) • Individuals must meet the height requirement for each specific pool from the bottom of your child’s feet to their chin in the shallow end. Parent & Child classes are exempt from the height requirement.

Frank Lloyd Wright: 36 inches chin to toes, Nathan Hale: 38 inches chin to toes, WA Central: 42 inches chin to toes • Class length will be 50 minutes, except Semi-Private is 30 minutes • Swim goggles recommended for levels 3 – 6 • Individuals must be potty trained in order to enroll in all programs. No Swim Diapers Allowed.

Swim Level Classifications Our lessons are taught by American Red Cross Certified Water Safety Instructors. Please read swim levels carefully and check height requirements to assure your child is in the correct level.

The WA-WM Rec Dept. reserves the right to move your child out of a level for their own safety.

Water and air temperature is regulated by the District’s Maintenance Department, not the Recreation Department. They make every attempt to maintain a pool temperature of 82 degrees.

Parent & Child Classes

Beginning water skills introduced such as getting face wet in the pool, blowing bubbles, front and back float and glides. Children ages 2 and up that are toilet trained.

Absolutely NO swim diapers of any kind are allowed.

POOL REGULATIONS

1. Per state code, all swimmers must thoroughly rinse off in the shower before entering the pool.

2. Swim caps are required of all swimmers whose hair is long or controlled by hair spray or oil. Caps are sold at pool for $2.00.

3. Do not bring valuables to pool. The Recreation Department is not responsible for lost or stolen articles.

4. Any swimmer who has entered kindergarten must use their respective male/female locker room.

5. Strollers must be kept out of pool area for child’s safety. Please carry child or use child carrying device.

6. Use of cell phones and electronic devices is prohibited in locker rooms.

Level 1 Introduction of Water Skills

For first time students who may be fearful of the water or need to gain confidence and be more independent in the water. Some of the skills worked on are bobbing in water, back floats and submerging face in the water.

Parent and Participant with Disabilities Swim - Ages 4 and Up

BOOST your confidence in the water and join this swim session being offered for people with disabilities and their parents. The program will run similar to our semi-private lessons, instructors will meet with parents to determine individuals goals of the class. We do ask for individuals to set goals but the main focus will be to have fun, meet new friends, and learn basic fundamentals of swimming.

Instructors will work alongside the Parents IN the water.

Participant with Disabilities Water Exercise Class - Ages 15 & Up

This program is designed specifically for adult swimmers who are interested in beginning a fitness program that includes swim training. This is ideal for those who are interested in sharpening their skills and developing endurance. This is a great way to get exercise and instruction at the same time.

Aqua Boot Camp is an awesome water workout that combines calisthenics, cardiovascular conditioning, core and muscle strength building along with swimming. This class uses the unique buoyancy, resistance, and movement of water.

Aqua Boot Camp offers a challenging workout that pushes individuals at their own pace. Ability to swim is recommended but can include non-swimmers, and other aquatic exercisers.

This NEW program is a great way to improve your diving skills or just explore something new. You will work on the approach and competitive dive techniques in a fun challenging environment. Dynamic Deep Water Workout Mini-Session

Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Certification Course

Do you want to teach swim lessons, work with kids and make good money? The purpose of the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor course is to train instructor candidates to teach courses in the American Red Cross swimming and Water Safety program. This course will help develop your understanding of how to use the course materials, how to conduct lessons and how to evaluate participants’ progress.

Instructor: Heather Townsend Prerequisites: To participate in the Water Safety Instructor course, individuals must: Be at least 16 years of age on or before the final scheduled lesson of this course Demonstrate the ability to perform the following swimming skills: 1. Swim the following strokes consistent with the Stroke Performance Charts: Front Crawl, 25 yards, Back Crawl, 25 yards, Breaststroke, 25 yards, Elementary Backstroke, 25 yards, Sidestroke, 25 yards, Butterfly, 15 yards 2. Maintain position on back for 1 minute in deep water (floating or sculling) 3. Tread water for 1 minute.

To Be Certified as a Water Safety Instructor, instructor candidates must: Attend and successfully participate in all course lessons, successfully complete the required number of practice-teaching assignments, score at least 80 percent (correctly answer 40 of 50 questions) on the final instructor course written exam. American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors are authorized to teach American Red Cross Learn to Swim Lessons.

Lifeguarding Certification

Do you want to learn life saving skills and potentially make good money? The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program is to teach participants the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. The course content and activities prepare participants to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent drownings and injuries.

Instructor: Heather Townsend

Prerequisites: To participate in the Lifeguarding course, individuals must: Be at least 15 years of age on or before the final scheduled lesson of this course.

Demonstrate the ability to perform the following swimming skills: Swim 300 yards continuously, using these strokes in the following order: 100 yards of front crawl using rhythmic breathing and a stabilizing, propellant kick. Rhythmic breathing can be performed either by breathing to the side or to the front.

100 yards of breaststroke using a pull, breathe, kick and glide sequence.

100 yards of either the front crawl or breaststroke. The 100 yards may be combination of front crawl and breaststroke.

Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds.

To Be Certified as a Lifeguard, candidates must attend all class sessions, demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities, competency in the three final skill scenarios and correctly answer at least 80 percent of the questions in the three sections of the final written exam: Section 1-16 correct answers out of 20 questions Section 2-24 correct answers out of 30 questions on Part 1 and 8 correct answers out of 10 questions on Part 2 Section 3-16 correct answers out of 20 questions Upon Successful Completion of the Lifeguarding course, each participant will receive American Red Cross Universal Certificates Lifeguarding/First Aid/ CPR/AED for the professional Rescuer, which is valid for 2 years.

Junior Lifeguard Course - Ages 11 - 14

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN BECOMING A LIFEGUARD BUT ARE NOT QUITE OLD ENOUGH? Get involved in our NEW Junior Lifeguarding program designed to guide youths ages 11-14 through an age appropriate American Red Cross Lifeguarding course. The course focuses on building a foundation of knowledge, attitudes and skills of future lifeguards. Participants will get an introduction to first aid, CPR and AED knowledge and skills that are appropriate for traditional pools, multi-use facilities, waterparks and waterfronts, including lakes and rivers. Participants who successfully complete the course will receive a certificate of completion. Baton classes are 40 minutes in length. All levels are classified by age. If ability dictates a student may be moved to a different level if agreed upon by both the parent and the teacher. Classes will be taught by members of the West Allis Diamond Twirlers Team.

The ½ Time Show Class is a great way to see what your child may be interested in doing. It covers a little baton, dance, and props.

Diamond Twirlers is a club sport activity under the auspices of the West Allis-West Milwaukee Recreation and Community Services Department. Our State/Regional Champion Competitive Teams attend dance and baton competitions and strive to do other community performances on a solo and small-group level. Members of the group have used their baton/dance skills to compete not only in dance/baton contests but also in scholarship programs, pageants, and community service roles. The goals of the group are to develop ability within the sport, promote teamwork and leadership skills, and to have fun. The Director is National Baton Twirling Association Registered Judge/Coach Kathy Kugi-Tom. Team placement is based on tryout scores. All students trying out will be placed on a team. Placement is at sole discretion of the Director. Practices are primarily Saturdays, January 3 through July 11, 2015. Additional practices could be added as needed.

This program is an instructional gymnastic class for boys and girls ages 4 and older. Participants will develop skills on the uneven bars, balance beams, vault, and the floor. We offer classes with a ratio of 10 students per coach which promotes more individualized attention, making each class limited to a total of 70 participants. Skills test will be done to determine which group each participant will be assigned to. Girls should dress in a leotard and boys should wear a snug-fitting t-shirt and shorts. Any individual with hair that is chin length or longer must have their hair tied back. There will be a recital on Saturday, May 2 with a dress rehearsal on Friday, May 1. There will be an additional fee for matching costumes/ leotards used for the recital. More information will be sent home with your child after classes start. Looking for a way for your child to improve their confidence?

In this traditional martial arts program, 2nd Degree Black Belt instructors will teach children traditional martial arts, Muay Thai kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. This class is designed to improve your child’s large and fine motor skills while building character qualities such as confidence, leadership, respect and discipline. A $20 belt fee at the end of the session is optional for students wishing to earn rank and become a black belt someday.

Aikido - Ages 12 - 17

Aikido is one of the best kept secrets in martial arts.

Pronounced ahy-kee-do, Aikido is a Japanese art of self defense employing locks, throws and holds and utilizing the principle of nonresistance to cause an opponent’s momentum to work against them. It is a mix of Jujitsu and Kenjutsu. Join district teacher Matthew Fanning, a member of the Midwest Tomiki Aikido Yudanshakai, in learning the proper technique of Aikido.

There will be tumbling involved. Just like other martial arts, Aikido has a ranking system and students can earn rank as they study this style of martial arts.

Youth Golf Instruction Ages 6 – 15

Professional golf instructor, Jim Rewolinski, will cover the full swing of the woods and irons and the fundamentals of the short game techniques that include pitching, chipping and putting. Instruction is geared to each individual’s ability. Bring your own clubs or you may use the house clubs at no charge.

Please do not purchase any clubs until after the first lesson at which time a personal evaluation and recommendation will be made regarding the correct fit for your physique and swing proficiency.

The program will have 2 lessons that will be held at the golf range, 1 lesson that will be held on the practice green, and 1 lesson playing three practice holes on the golf course.

Students are required to rent practice balls each time while at the range. Basket sizes and prices are as follows: $4.00/small and $6.00/large. Students will receive a discount of $3.00 off a large basket size during lessons. A $1.00 fee for use of the practice green and a $5.00 green fee are required for the three holes practice round.

Wrestling Club Kindergarten - 8th Grade

The WA-WM Wrestling Club is kicking off its 35th season this winter.

The club is for all grades kindergarten through 8th and all levels of competition. If you are just starting out we can teach you the basics, but if you are an advanced wrestler we can help you develop the strength, speed and agility for high school or other types of sports.

We are looking for kids who will be willing to dedicate their time and energy to this sport.

The club will host its own Kids Tournament at WA Central on January 18, 2015. To make it a successful tournament we need a lot of parent participation. We will end the season with a banquet in April.

There is a great dinner, and awards given out that night.

We practice two nights a week, Beginners 6:00 - 7:00 pm and Advanced/Intermediate 7:00 - 8:30 pm on Mondays and Wednesdays at West Allis Central High School.

After School Programs SAFE

WA-WM Recreations Department offers After School Programs located at all 4K Centers & Elementary Schools.

After School Programs

The SAFE Program runs Monday – Friday when school is in session, from the end of the school day until 5:30 pm Second semester begins January 20th.

SAFE provides a structured environment that includes a balance of enriching activities and recreational activities.

Students check in, receive a daily nutritional snack and then programming begins. Daily activities include supervised play, homework club or academic enrichment, organized gym/outdoor activities, and arts & crafts. SAFE students are encouraged to stay the duration of the program, and are able to leave once checked out by the designated parent or guardian. When calling in an absence/change of plans at your school please state that the SAFE Program should be notified. Behavioral Expectations parallel school rules, students who do not adhere to behavior expectations may be dismissed from the program.

REACH

WA-WM Recreations Department offers After School Programs located at all Intermediate Schools.

The REACH Program runs Monday – Friday when school is in session, from the end of the school day until 5:30 p.m.

The REACH Program is open to all Intermediate students. As part of the program students will have the opportunity to engage with friend, utilize academic assistance and enrichment, and have access to gyms and outdoor areas. REACH Programs will host various clubs or specialized activities throughout the year, some activities may occur and addition cost to cover supplies and instructors but participation is optional.

WA-WM Recreation Department’s 41st Annual Alumni Basketball & Volleyball Tournaments

Graduates from West Allis Central, Nathan Hale or West Milwaukee get your team together and enter the 2014 Alumni Men’s Basketball or Women’s Volleyball tournaments.

You do not have to be a former player on your high school team. Players just need to be a graduate of one of our district high schools. Get your high school friends together and become part of this year’s tournament. The dates for this year’s tournament are December 29th and 30th.

The Men’s Basketball tournament will be comprised of two divisions. Division I will be made up of teams graduating from the same high school and year from 2004-present. Division II will be made up of teams graduating prior to 2004. Teams must be formed from the same high school and may combine two consecutive years in the 1995-2001 graduating classes. Prior to 1994, teams may combine as many years as needed.

Women’s volleyball teams must be formed from the same high school and may combine two consecutive years, 2004 to present and prior to 2004 may combine as many years as needed to form a team.

Adult Golf Lessons

Professional golf instructor, Jim Rewolinski will cover the full swing of the woods and irons and the fundamentals of the short game techniques that include pitching, chipping and putting.

Instruction is geared to each individual's ability.

Bring your own clubs or you may use the house clubs at no charge.

Please do not purchase any clubs until after the first lesson at which time a personal evaluation and recommendation will be made regarding the correct fit for your physique and swing proficiency. The program will have 2 lessons that will be held at the golf range, 1 lesson that will be held on the practice green, and 1 lesson playing three practice holes on the golf course.

Students are required to rent practice balls each time while at the range. Basket sizes and prices are as follows: $4.00/small and $6.00/large. Automotive Basics (16 years and up)

In this hands-on course, the average adult driver will gain insight on how a vehicle operates and learn what to do in the event of a breakdown. This is an introduction to vehicle systems and basic repairs for the average consumer. The class will be broken into two components, an hour in the classroom and then an hour of hands-on instruction, taught

by ASE certified high school auto instructors. Some topics that will be covered will include: what to do if a car breaks down, how to safely jump start a car with a dead battery, changing oil and tips to buying vehicle parts so that you can do your own car repair. Participants are required to provide their own safety glasses, textbooks will be provided for class use and will be available for purchase.

Aikido for Adults Aikido is one of the best kept secrets in martial arts. Pronounced ahy-kee-do, Aikido is a Japanese art of self-defense employing locks, throws and holds and utilizing the principle of nonresistance to cause an opponent’s momentum to work against them. It is a mix of Jujitsu and Kenjutsu. Join district teacher Matthew Fanning, a member of the Midwest Tomiki Aikido Yudanshakai, in learning the proper technique of Aikido. There will be tumbling involved. Just like other martial arts, Aikido has a ranking system and students can earn rank as they study this style of martial arts.

Join Ann Wegner LeFort from the Mindful Palate as she guides you through various steps of food preservation such as canning and freezing and other techniques. Discuss the best times to purchase vegetables and fruits or even the best places to find the produce in the areas. It is ok to play with your food in this class, we won’t hold it against you.

A jar of Welch’s grape jam will never look the same after creating your own jams and jellies in this class. Ann Wegner LeFort from the Mindful Palate will guide you as you create various jams and jellies in the class to take home. You will not be stomping grapes with your feet, but will be extremely satisfied with your very own jams. Jams and Jellies are great gifts and you can experiment to create new delicious flavors. “Cooking” Series with Staci Joers

Instructor Staci Joers has an Associate’s Degree from MATC with in Restaurant and Hotel Cooking. She has had the privilege of working with many great chefs. Staci will demonstrate how to prepare these recipes and you will observe and sample her recipes. Classes are for ages 14 and up. A withdraw from these cooking classes needs to be done at least 72 hours prior to the scheduled class, or no refund will be granted.

Soups

January is National Soup Month and we are celebrating with an all new homemade soup class. Soup can be a meal-in-a-bowl. Add bread or crackers, something “fruity” and a hot beverage and you have a satisfying and hearty meal. We will cover the basics of soup making from preparation of stocks to the soup ingredients and serving ideas. You will receive lots of recipes including the ones that are being created in the kitchen tonight. The menu includes: New England clam chowder, Chicken B.L.T. Soup, Creamy Onion Soup, and Pasta e Fagioli served with Garlicky Rolls.

French Toast

French toast was not invented in France; in fact, French toast was around long before France even existed as a country. The exact origins of French toast are unknown, but it isn’t surprising that humans seem to have come up with the recipe quickly, given that French toast is traditionally made out of stale bread.

Staci’s recipes tonight might go far beyond just soaking bread in egg and milk. French toast is decadent and delicious and you will sample some of my favorites including: Banana Stuffed French Toast with Chocolate-Hazelnut sauce and homemade Granola, Panko-crusted French toast with Raspberry syrup, and Monte Cristo French Toast.

Some kind of bread, some kind of meat and some kind of vegetable slapped together in an easily transportable package. Tonight, Staci is going to prepare some ethnic favorites that you can pack into your lunch box or serve to your favorite friends.

The menu for the evening will be butter lettuce salad with garlic croutons and green goddess dressing, beef tenderloin tournedos with béarnaise sauce, caramelized onion mashed potatoes and the dessert will be chocolate and caramel tart with hazelnuts. Please bring an apron, your favorite kitchen knives (wrapped in a towel and secured for travel) and a hair tie to keep your hair back if needed. Due to the cost of mailing our Activity Guide, we are unable to send out any additional copies. Activity Guides can be viewed at www.wawmrec.com, at each of the district schools’ office, health department, library, city hall & West Milwaukee Community Center.

Refund Policy

The policy of the WA-WM Recreation Department is to refund registration fees only under the following circumstances: 1. A refund request form must be completed at the Recreation Department office.

2. 24 hours or more prior to the start of a class/program, a full refund will be given minus 20% service fee, if a refund check is requested. To avoid the 20% service fee, class/program fee can be credited to your account for future use.

3. Less than 24 hours prior to the start of a class/program, but prior to the start of second half, 50% refund will be given for credit or refund.

4. After the first half of class has passed, no refunds will be given.

5. #2, #3, #4 will not apply to adult sports program, contact Dustin Smith, 604-4938.

6. A full refund will be given when the Recreation Department cancels a class.

Refund Overpayments

When an overpayment is made for any program you are enrolling in and a refund check is requested, $3.00 will be deducted to cover administrative/mailing costs. To avoid administrative charges you can request your overpayment be credited to your account for future use.
