Antique Bookcases: A Must-Have in Every Book Lover’s Home
Collecting Elvis Presley
By Bob Ashworth
Bookcases are great pieces of furniture, but antique bookcases are even better. With these pieces, a treasured book collection is not only stored properly, but it has added value thanks to the legacy of the bookcase that holds them. For many years, the bookcase has
been a necessary piece in every home. It is usually found in the home office or the library as storage for books and other documents. Sometimes, the unit is used to display other things, such as picture frames, Continue on page 2

The place is large, with more than 6,000 square-feet of space on two floors. The mall features 20 top area dealers who together offer an eclectic selection of art, books, coins, vintage dolls, old lighting, fine antique furniture, and unique collectibles. Mall owner Lance Lewis says he strives to buy the very best items to sell in his store. "I'm always looking for the most unusual things at a good price. When I do find something nice, I make it a point to pass it on to my shoppers at a fair price. It helps to keep them coming back."

souvenirs and other collected items. Nonetheless, as the name suggests, it is best used to keep books in place. All book lovers need to have a bookcase in which to store their valued possessions. The storage unit helps preserve the bound manuscripts for a longer period of time. However, not
all bookcases are the same: if a book collector is determined to keep the books’ shelf life, he or she will consider choosing antique bookcases. Why should one go for antique bookcases? At this day and age, there are surely high quality furniture that is more modern available in the market. Why settle for the old
stuff? The answer is simple: antique pieces have something that new items do not, and that is historical value. All over the world, antique furniture is considered as precious because they belong to a time that is long gone. Antique pieces give contemporary society a glimpse of the past, an echo of Continue on page 15

Estate Sales By Reed Talonario
If you enjoy going out on the weekends to visit yard sales and garage sale looking for unusual items, you should really make a point of hitting a few estate sales when you get the chance. Certainly there can be an air of sadness about one of these events. It is basically the clearing out of a lifetime of possessions. But if you enjoy finding unusual collectibles, you will seldom be disappointed. Estate sales are sometimes run by the family of the deceased person, but it is more
common for them to be handled by companies that specialize in holding estate sales. The prices at these sales will generally be a bit higher than you will find at garage sales or flea markets. This is due to a couple of factors. First off, when professionals are putting the sale together, they know the value of most of the items they will be displaying. Generally, if you make a fair offer for something, especially late in the day, you have a fairly good chance of getting a deal. Offering to buy
in bulk can also help. Don’t be afraid to ask the professional sellers if they would be willing to cut a deal. You may want to be more subtle if dealing with a family member. I once found a large stack of antique photos that were selling for one dollar each. I was interested in buying the entire stack, but since there were over a hundred of them, I was only interested if I could get a decent deal. The owner of the estate sale company sold me the Continue on page 15

Adorn Your Home With Charming Vintage Chest of Drawers
Page 5
By Kevin Mosk
In an age when chairs and other furniture pieces are designed with a somewhat otherworldly appeal, a vintage item still stands out. Take for instance a threetier chest or highboy (which refers to drawers raised on high legs) that looks quite elegant. It will look elegant in a stylish, laid back home or a contemporary house. A drawer in unpainted wood like oak or mahogany, reminiscent of the 18th century, certainly has class and character written
all over it. Standing on carved or molded bracket feet and with the original handles still intact, such a furniture item which can fit nicely in a bedroom, living room, dining room or even in a spot in a hallway, can add beauty and
elegance. A vintage mahogany drawer is a real find, especially for those who love adorning their homes with various object arts purchased from trips abroad or handed down by a forebear. Have a modern
Ve n e t i a n - i n s p i r e d home? For your master’s bedroom or guest room, you may opt for a Venetian three-drawer chest that combines mirror glass and wooden frames, which derives inspiration from the Italian Venetian era. A great alternative
for your bedroom or living room is a beautifully restored mahogany drawer originating from England (with serpentine drawers) which uses original French style hardware. An antique French chest of drawers will perfectly complement a hand carved Louis XV-inspired rattan bed in a lady’s room. Such pieces may be seen in all their splendor in online furniture stores or local antique stores offering rare, collectible, or hard-to-find furniture items.
