Collection, Or Clutter? By Sharon Lowenheimr
Collections usually start off innocently enough. You accumulate two or three items you love, and before long, you become obsessed with owning as many as you can. Friends begin noticing your accumulation and start adding to it. Eventually, your home is overrun with them, whether they be of potential value, like Hummels or original Barbie dolls, or whimsical, like ceramic pigs or stuffed smileyfaces. At what point does a collection become clutter?

Vintage and Antique - Old is Gold Today With the change in weather from winter's cold, brutal wind and driving snow, Spring ushers in that longing to go treasure hunting at tag and rummage sales. Churches, towns, and civic groups also feel this tug to begin tossing out winter and bringing in "new." Today, however, "new" does not have to be literally just off the manufacturer's assembly line. New to the savvy homemaker of today means vintage, antique, and gracefully charming items that "breathe" that feeling of "home" and gracious living." Something as simple as throw-away windows from Victorian era homes are a "find" that you should grab and run with. They are versatile and can be a part of any room in your home. As the weather brings back sun, and balmy breezes, antique water cans, porch swings, and even garden gates will put your home front in your neighborhood's Home and Garden Special Places. Even terra cotta flower pots in varying sizes are used not only on porches and "Florida Rooms" but in the kitchen, bathroom and in your craft or sewing room.
If you are fortunate to find leaded glass windows then you have a myriad of possibilities to highlight and delight family and friends. These unique windows are a virtual rainbow in their own right, but added to your home decor they can take the place of painted pictures. Adding a bit of extra charm if you showcase them with additional "vintage" items such as antique quilt blocks, or even oldfashioned handkerchiefs or table doilies. Check on the web for laundering instructions for delicate needlework or ask a dry cleaning establishment what they would

recommend in case you have a "yellowing" of the fabric or any stains on the needlework. Once you begin the challenge of bringing the "old" into your home, you will begin to realize just how "right" it seems to have these "vintage" items displayed and treasured by today's generations. So when the weather begs you to go outside, check out those flea markets or even architectural "scrap" stores that have the most fascinating door knobs, cabinet hardware, and yes, most assuredly windows and their frames. It’s All About Nothing, A Column About Everything
Yard Sales Shopping for antiques and collectibles is always a treasure hunt. With Spring’s arrival, there will be many opportunities for collecting enthusiasts to find treasure at the thousand of yard sales that will be held this season. Sometimes the best finds are those that require you to open up a few boxes. Show up early and don’t be afraid to dicker with the seller. Remember, the seller wants to get rid of whatever he or she is selling.

Support Local Shops It’s that time of the year when those slick outfits roll into town with offers to buy your gold, silver, coins, vintage jewelry watches and guitars. They’ll rent space in a local hotel and take out full page ads in the local newspapers with offers to pay the highest prices for anything valuable. Please, remember to
give your local dealers, antiques and collectibles stores your business first as you might be surprised to find their offers for your items are more often the same as what you would get from these out-of-towners.

Colletibles Provenance: Pass It On
Provenance is "the origin, or source of an object; history of ownership; or, location of an object". In the art, antiques and collectibles world, provenance often means more monetary value. However, the story behind an object also adds sentimental and historical value. Most of us know that an autographed baseball can be worth more money with a verifiable story. A picture to support the story is even better.
But, how about something like a cocktail ring with a story? Knowing that your grandmother's ring came with her when she escaped Nazi Germany may, or may not affect it's monetary value, but it undoubtedly adds to your family history. My family recently found a ukulele in my grandmother's basement. Yet, we do not know who, if anyone, played it, much less where it came from. What we wouldn't

give for a story, or even a photograph. Let me touch on photographs for a moment. My grandmother had many old photographs. Looking through her collection was fantastic. But, so many of her photographs had no names, dates, or location enscribed on them. If only we would have thought to get the missing information from her while we had the opportunity. I feel like history was lost with her in this way. In this digital age we spend loads of time taking posting pictures online. Yet, I keep hearing stories about people losing the only pictures of loved ones they have
when cameras are lost or stolen. We may think we are sharing precious moments with everyone, but unless the photos are printed, and tagged, we are possibly, in the end, only sharing with cyberspace. Back to heirlooms. I am always amazed at the items I see on the Antiques Roadshow that come in with a little note stuck inside about where it came from. Who does that? Someone who cares about their family history is a pretty good bet. Aside from fine art and autographed baseballs, how do I know what will be worth more with provenance? I don't. But, I do know that we

can pass on more to the next generation than just "stuff". We can give our heirs a little history with our heirlooms. I encourage anyone giving, or receiving, family heirlooms to pass on the history as well because Knowing where we came from is a priceless gift.
